Well, we had another round of bad weather on Saturday. Thank goodness it was not too bad around here and we did not get a lot of rain. I am so sorry about the destruction in Abilene and other towns. It is so terrible for anyone to have to go through all that destruction and loss. Our prayers are with those.

Today is such a beautiful day, just like last Sunday was on Mother’s Day. Our forecast is showing more storms and rain. Just pray for safety for everyone and hope nothing bad will appear.

Just a reminder that our musical will be on Saturday evening. Hope the weather will be nice, and everyone can come and enjoy a nice afternoon. The concession stand will open at 5 P M and the program will begin at 5:30 P M. Last week end Danny and Phyllis Letz, granddaughter, Deanne Conner, and Albert and Jana Hinkle were in Wichita Falls to attend the graduation of Eric Conner from Midwestern State University with a Bachelor’s Degree. Following the graduation the group and several friends all enjoyed a great meal and lot of visiting and fun celebrating the graduation and Mother’s Day. Congratulations to Eric.

OBITUARIES

Alminice Harrison Alminice Harrison, our loving mother and grandmother, of Lake Whitney and formerly of Stamford, Texas, entered into her heavenly home on Thursday, May 16, 2019 at the age of 96 years, 7 months and 2 days. Alminice’s life will be honored at 2:00 Sunday, May 19, 2019 at St. John’s United Methodist Church with Pastor John Erwin officiating. Interment will follow in Highland Memorial Cemetery in Stamford under the direction of Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home in Stamford.

Aliminice Weaver was born on October 14, 1922, in Rule, Texas, the daughter of the late Elihu and Carrie (Morgan) Weaver. Alminice was Valedictorian of Rule High School, Class of 1940. After high school, she attended the University of Texas in Austin and University of North Texas in Denton. Aliminice married Wylie B. “Dub” Harrison on January 18, 1943 in South Sioux, Nebraska. Dub and Alminice moved to Stamford in 1945. Dub preceded Alminice in death on February 28, 1993. Alminice was the secretary for St. John’s United Methodist Church for many years. She was a Past President of the Pierian Club of Stamford and a member of St. John’s United Methodist Church. In 2009, Alminice moved to Lake Whitney and lived near her daughter, Renda. She was an associate member of the White Bluff Chapel. Alminice was a very talented seamstress, tailoring her own clothing and making the alter vestments used at St. John’s Methodist Church. She was known for her wonderful cooking skills, making “the best” buttermilk pie to which she guarded the recipe closely. Alminice was a dear friend to many and she loved traveling with family and friends.

Alminice was preceded in death by her husband, Dub; a sister, LaVerne Weaver and two brothers, Eloise Weaver and Brice Weaver.

Alminice’s sweet life will be remembered by her son, Ronnie and wife Linda Harrison of Odessa, a daughter, Renda and husband Russell Carter of Lake Whitney; grandchildren, Melissa Tolin and Sven of Odessa, Mark Harrison and Tanya of Lubbock, Colin Carter and Amanda of Ft. Worth, Matthew Carter and Christina of Austin; seven great grandchildren; and many friends.

HELLO FROM COWBOY COUNTRY

Hope y’all are well. If you will recall where we left off last week, A.J. Swenson had been working hard to improve the genetics of the Swenson Hereford herds.

SMS beef had become known as some of the finest in the world, and their breeding and commercial cattle became highly sought after.

Continuing on with Mary Whatley Clarke’s story The Swenson Saga and the SMS Ranch: “After oil was found in Jones County in the early twenties, the New York management warned the Stamford office to proceed slowly and cautiously with land sales. Large oil companies were intensely competing for land leases in those areas where oil was being discovered. In 1947 the Throckmorton Ranch was leased for oil exploration. The peak production on the ranch was some seventy or eighty producing wells. Production is down at the present time and no new discoveries have been recently made (published in 1976). Flat Top Ranch was leased in 1949 and now has 41 wells. Tongue River Ranch was leased in 1951 and has two producing wells. Income from oil has been used in mesquite eradication and other ranch improvement programs.

As the years passed the mesquite continued to

proliferate, some acres having such dense growth that it was almost impossible to find the cattle. Andrew realized that a range improvement program was imperative. It would cost a fortune but it would pay off in the long run. Andrew said the program was begun to give the cowboys elbow room, and to make grass produce as it should.

Records showed that there were 2000 fewer cows on the Throckmorton Ranch before the mesquite was exterminated.

Mesquite had been grubbed by hand in the horse pastures in past years, and the results studied and measured. Andrew wrote the New York office that two men could rustle up the horses if the mesquite was not so dense, but at the present time some five or six men were needed for the work. Grubbing was slow and tedious, and was done by a crew of Mexicans at $4.10 an acre. By 1941 it was realized that fully twenty-five percent more cattle could be run on land that had been cleared of mesquite. Some 80 Mexicans were now toiling at the stubborn growth and had cleared 4000 acres by 1945.

Fully one third more cattle were grazing on those acres after the mesquite was removed. The grass was also stronger, and the cattle grazing on it wintered more

successfully. Sawing and poisoning the mesquite was another method used to fight the pesky growth, and about 2000 acres received this treatment. At one time five hand-operated saws were in use and a crew of ten men and four saws could cut and poison about eight acres a day. Sprouting was an extensive problem against which poisoning proved unsatisfactory. In June 1943 Andrew launched a new tactic. He bought a D-7 and D-4 tractor and war was begun in earnest against the small and large trees alike. In 1946 about 1,523 acres were cleared at Flat Top. The trees were left on the ground, or pushed with a tree rake to the edge of the pastures where they were later burned.

In 1947 a contract was made with Warren Moore of Duluth, Minn. to clear 6500 acres of mesquite.

He had four large crawlertype caterpillar tractors, equipped with dozer and foot cutter attachments and three smaller tractors.

Ordinarily he used his machines for open pit mining in Minnesota, so his Texas assignment, which lasted three months, was Moore’s first experiment with mesquite. When World War II was over, and there were no restrictions on buying heavy equipment, the SMS management purchased eight crawler type tractors and hired a skilled driver.

Since that time continuous mesquite eradication has been carried on over the ranches. The big machines produce multiple benefits.

They build earthen stock tanks, roads, fire guards, and help in farming operations in addition to battling mesquite.

Today the ranches are as free of mesquite and other harmful growth as they were during the prairie dog days when those small pests kept the sprouting trees and grass eaten down.

One can look for miles across the prairie with an unobstructed view at every animal grazing on the buffalo and mesquite grasses.

Stray steers can no longer hide in dense mesquite thickets, as they once did, sometimes for years, until they grew so wily in the ways of evasion that they were dubbed ‘outlaws’ by the frustrated round-up cowboys who couldn’t find them.

‘What a pity that we did not look ahead when the prairie dogs were killed

out, and start our mesquite eradication program then,’ Andrew said in an earlier interview. ‘It would have saved a fortune. The dogs kept the growth eaten down and we should have been wise enough to know that it would grow back again when they were killed out.’

SMS Ranches have spent in excess of one million dollars on mesquite eradication and spend an average of $60,000 annually to keep down the growth.

When this writer first visited the Throckmorton Ranch and asked Swede Swenson, manager, how to find it, he replied, “You will know when you get there.

It’s clear of mesquite.’ How right he was. There was mesquite for miles on each side of the road, then far ahead, clean and clear, the rolling prairie swept into view with its fat, grazing cattle, and I knew I had

found the place, and I had.

There was a big sign at the lane reading, ‘Swenson Land and Cattle Company.’”

Bulldogs Season Ends with Loss to Hawley The Stamford Bulldogs faced district rival Hawley Bearcats in a best of three series in the Regional Quarterfinals this past weekend. In Game 1 the Bulldogs held on for the win despite the 3 runs scored by Hawley in the 7th.

Reagan Detamore led the offense with 3 hits and 3 RBIs. Brett Patterson also had a 2 RBI double. Zach Duran got the win on the mound.

Quail Field Day Set May 24th in Roby

news@americannewspapers.net I frequently talk with people about trees and the discussions vary widely. I may talk to one homeowner about shade trees , another about color or accent trees, some people want a row of trees to block a view, and a different client will need fruit or nut trees.

No two people that I’ve ever talked to have ever been exactly the same, or expressed a wish for the identical thing someone else wanted, unless they have seen a planting they like. In that case, the discussion will be along the lines of, “I like what my neighbor has, and I want something like that”. So even then, people want to put their individual stamp on their own personal plantings.

I have found that one of the things that I like about the work I do, is dealing with the general public concerning the trees that they have, or want to have.

The interesting people I meet and the varied things they want from their landscapes keeps me on my toes and definitely creates a learning environment for me. I’m constantly amazed at the amount of experience and knowledge my clients have.

In tree planting discussions the large amount of variables, such as customers desires, soil type at site, budget, available trees, location, and etc., involved pretty much guarantee that no two conversations are the same. But even with all of these variables, there is one thing that needs to be common to any tree planting conversation, and that is the roots.

If you plant a tree on a site with shallow soil, such as a place that has a rock layer a foot or so beneath the surface, probably, that root system is going to be limited, or very wide. If it tries to spread out laterally, but can’t because it runs into compacted soil beneath a street or drive, then your tree is not going to do well, and it also isn’t going to be stable. There are trees that will grow in almost any soil condition or site, but if your site is limited in some way, putting the right plant there will save a lot of trouble later.

When the trees in downtown sidewalk cutouts lift the pavement, usually the thought there is that the root system is spreading out and the size of the structural roots at the base of the tree is what’s picking up the slab. What’s usually happening in these places is that the soil all around the cutout is so compacted that roots have a very hard time penetrating it and actually have access to very little of the dirt underneath the paving. What’s pushing up the pavement is the tree having to grow almost all of its roots in that small area that it can use. If it weren’t for the fact that this compacted root system is surrounded by dense well packed soil, they would just blow over.

I think planting trees is a really good thing and we should do more of it, but if you think you have a questionable site, or aren’t sure the area is large enough, ask a professional. A little bit of the right advice can save you a lot of trouble.

Don’t plant future problems, plant trees that will work on your site so you can enjoy them instead of worry about them.

Spring- Reflections The week is finally here that teenagers have been excited about for the past four years, and parents have been dreading since they sent their babies off to kindergarten. It’s graduation week. It’s a weird time, filled with a mix of different emotions and bittersweet feelings. This is a time that allows us to look back on what has passed and remember all the good, bad, and in-between moments that have happened.

All of the “firsts” and “lasts” that have given us things to look forward to in life. All the times when we didn’t know how we were going to make it another day, and all the days that we wish we could back to and simply just relive and enjoy the moment all over again. These memories will be cherished. All of the success, hard work, embarrass-

ing moments, and mistakes. It all culminates and gives us something to look back on and remember, for better or for worse.

It is a time for new things to start and grow, and this means that other things must come to an end.

Sometimes the difficulty lies in the fact that it is time to move on. To move on from what we’ve come to know and expect as “normal”. This isn’t easy, it’s not easy to go into uncharted territory, especially when you’re the one who has to let go and just watch as your child or grandchild sets out on a new adventure. What it takes to be

able to do this and step out into the unknown, and in this case it means letting someone else step out into the unknown, is trust.

It takes a lot of trust to let a loved one go out into the world and fend for themselves. Whether it’s in a town for education, or just to begin life as an adult, it takes trust. This trust isn’t just about hoping that they’ll make good choices and do the “right thing”, but this also requires us to trust ourselves that we have equipped these young adults for how to live and function on their own. We have to trust that we’ve given them the tools that they need to be successful. That all of the influence from parents and families, from teachers and coaches, have given them what they need in order to make those good choices.

We have to trust that the work has been done and we hope that it gets put to

good use.

Since I’ve started working with teenagers and people younger than myself, I’ve really been able to see God as the parental figure the bible points to. I say this because working with kids comes with its fair share of frustrations. There are times where I wish I could just tell kids everything they need to do, every choice they need to make, and then everything will work out great. Because I’ve been there, I’ve had the experiences, made the choices, and hindsight is 20/20. But the reality is, that I can give them my best advice, point them in the right direction, and hope they listen. Because we can’t make decisions for them. I’d be willing to bet, that this is how God feels about us sometimes.

For the most part, we know what is right, and what is wrong. But it’s harder to actually do what is right.

We have to make the choices ourselves, and deal with what comes next. For better, or for worse. God doesn’t control everything that we do. We’ve been given advice, and pointed in the right direction, and the decisions are ours to be made. God gives us that freedom. The freedom to choose and to make our own choices in life.

So as these teenagers are set free, and they go out on their own, it’s important to keep this in mind. It’s important to keep giving

advice and keep pointing in the right direction, but it’s also important to let them be free. Let them make their choices and deal with what comes next. This isn’t easy, and can be frustrating at times, but they will be better for it. Encourage them, support them, and love them. But let them go, and put that trust in all the work that has been done.

Pets Are Family

For Sandy

It is never easy to lose a pet, no matter what kind of animal it may be. That is a statement I know everyone can agree with in some shape or form. Even though they are only with us for a short time, the bond that THOUGHTS FROM we share with our pet never really goes away. I UNDER THE CAP bring up this subject as not only have I seen and Will McClure heard many people share their stories of their beloved pets (along with the release of A Dog’s Journey), I found myself again feeling the pain of losing a pet as my dog Sandy left this world this past week. I have had dogs growing up as my family had Dalmatians in the backyard, and I did share a bond with them (I had one dog, Rex, who I literally grew up with as I was 17 when he passed away also at the age of 17), but Sandy was a different bond as while the dogs we had in the past were technically the family’s, Sandy was the first dog I had for myself as a gift from my parents. I would spend time talking about Sandy, but I would be getting off my main overall thoughts here for the week. Instead, I will only say that while I didn’t immediately react to the news, it hit me later on as she was family to me.

This does bring me to my thoughts for the week and that is that pets are family, plain and simple. We hear all of the time about people abandoning pets because they were “bored” of them or abusive, but I prefer not to even acknowledge these people beyond that statement.

Instead, I focus on the people that open their homes to their pets. Whether the pet is a puppy or a kitten (or another animal) or a little bit older and seemingly forgotten about, pets are something we can easily take for granted and never truly know the impact that they have on our lives until they are gone. It could be for a short time or several years down the line, the bond we grow and share with our beloved animals never really fades away.

Even if we think that our pets may hate us at times or they do things that make us frustrated to no end, we can never really sever that bond that is shared. Dogs, for example, seem to sense and know when we are having a bad day and look to comfort us by wanting to play or simply lay in our laps. Even if they are the reason that we are upset, it can be their small, subtle way of apologizing. Our pets become part of our lives and, even years down the line, the memories we have of them never really go away. I’m not saying that everyone needs to go out and get a pet, but those that are, or have been, pet owners know exactly what I am talking about.

Pets become a part of our family and a part of us. All they ask for in return is a warm place to sleep, food and someone to love and be loved.

Some Highlights Of Harlingen Harlingen has been recognized as one of the most affordable cities in the United States.

“That’s one of the attractions because the dollar does go a lot further here,” says Cheryl LaBerge, who formerly worked for the city of Harlingen as downtown coordinator and now conducts walking tours of downtown Harlingen.

“Our climate is a big part of the reason that people are attracted here. You know Harlingen, we like to say, is the tropical playground of Texas because you can do so many things in the great outdoors year round: birding, golfing, fishing, you name it.”

The tropical landscaping is a fairly recent development in the valley because it is located in a very arid region.

“So when you drive

around and see all this lush bougainvillea and tropical plants, just know that all of that is here because early settlers brought water into this dry country. That made us the “Magic Valley” at the beginning of the twentieth century and early businessmen started inviting farmers to come down and they turned it into this agricultural mecca.”

By the way it’s really not a valley. You don’t see any mountains nearby. This is flat country. Not even a hill.

That was a marketing term to attract people to come to what the Spanish called the Wild Horse Desert. That’s

how the area was described on early maps.

The valley is famous for citrus, but as civilization creeps into farming land it’s not as important as it once was.

“The valley lemons, grapefruit, oranges, they’re all fabulous, second to none.

Then we have sugar cane, grain sorghum, and we always produce the first bale of cotton in the nation.”

Some famous people have called Harlingen home.

Howard E Butt, founder of the HEB chain of grocery stores, moved to Harlingen in the late twenties because it was such an agricultural powerhouse.

“He had a big cannery on West Jackson Street and that building is still there.

He loved tennis and had a tennis court next to his house. Our tennis facility is named the HEB Tennis Center.”

Lincoln Borglum lived in Harlingen. He finished sculpting Mount Rushmore, a project started by his father, Gutzon Borglum.

Perhaps the most famous Harlingen resident was Bill Haley the grandfather of rock and roll.

“We get people from Europe who come to Harlingen on a pilgrimage because they’re big Bill Haley fans. A lot of the younger kids have no idea that in July of 1955 a world changing event occurred when ROCK AROUND THE CLOCK by Hill Haley hit the number one spot on the pop charts.”

Museum Open for Family Day Graduation Weekend The Cowboy Country Museum is pleased to announce we will be open Saturday, May 25 from 2:00-6:00 pm for our first ever FAMILY DAY! We’ll be rocking the east side of the square all afternoon with music, street tacos, and family fun! Melissa’s Mexican Food with Attitude will be outside cooking with tables set up to eat and hang out. Come and go for museum tours, and catch a special Western art lesson at 4:00.

With summer coming on, we’ll be teaching the kids how to identify local snakes by their patterns and recognize the difference between venomous and non-venomous snakes.

Safety first, there will be no live snakes (we promise!), but everyone will be able to paint one of their own to take home and enjoy.
