BY KAY SPEARS When looking back through the years at the histories of families, genealogists look at who came before, as in what were the parent’s names, what were their vital statistics (birth and death dates), where did they live, etc. The same information can be translated for a business, such as previous dates and owners, previous locations, and business mergers.

Businesses most definitely can have family trees and, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of The New Stamford American this year, a look at its lineage may be of interest.

The New Stamford American was born, or had its first newspaper published, on June 4, 2009 by Callie Metler-Smith.

Library Summer Reading Club Success at VIP Center!

Hello everybody, I just want to take a moment to thank everyone who helped make our 2019 Summer Reading Club such a wild success for our Stamford area children, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Your support helps instill a lifelong love of reading for our local kids and keeps them engaged with books in the summertime.

First off, many thanks to the ladies of the Stamford VIP Center for opening your doors to host our annual

program. Your large, clean space allowed for more fun and play for the kids. We were joined by 133 children last week, that’s more than we could fit at the library last year!

I’d like to thank our readers, Mrs. Anita Marquez, Mrs. Sandy Taber, and Mr. Ed Stafford for joining this librarian in taking the time to excite these young minds and lead us through an adventure each day during our story time. You educated, entertained, and inspired!

My most heartfelt thanks

goes to those who worked each day behind the scenes, helping with our set up, crafts, snacks, and clean up. OBITUARIES

Marybelle Smith Marybelle Smith, our loving mother and grandmother, passed into her heavenly home on Sunday, July 21, 2019 at the age of 70 years. Funeral services were held 10:00 a.m. Thursday, July 25, 2019 at Temple Baptist Church with Rev. Jesse Morton officiating. Interment followed in Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home in Stamford. Friends and family gathered for visitation and sharing memories on Wednesday, July 24, 2019 from 5:30-6:30 p.m. at the funeral home.

Marybelle was born on September 11, 1948 in Stamford, Texas, the daughter of the late Johnny Claude and Cara Maybel (Davis) Williams. She married Allen Carl Smith, Sr. on January 2, 1965 in Stamford and he preceded her in death on July 30, 2005. Marybelle worked for over 30 years as a Certified Nurse Assistant in the Stamford area. She loved to crochet, making blankets for her grandkids and great grandchildren, whom she loved dearly. Marybelle also liked playing games on her cell phone and cherished the times she spent visiting with all of her family. She was a devoted member of Temple Baptist Church in Stamford. Marybelle had a very caring, sweet spirit and it showed in her every time you were in her presence.

Preceding Marybelle in death were her parents; her husband; son in law, Ray Moon; 3 brothers, Troy Williams, James Williams, Tommy Williams; 2 brothers-inlaw, Sam Smith and Raymond Smith; 3 sisters-in-law, Mamie Williams, Evelyn Williams, and Letha Stewart Willams.

Loving family to cherish Marybelle’s memories are a daughter, Brenda Moon and Jack Stevens of Stamford; a son and daughter in law, Allen Smith, Jr. and wife Letitia of Lueders; 4 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; a sister, Lila Stewart of Mansfield; brother, W.R. Williams and wife Iris of Abilene; a brother in law, Tommy Smith and wife Pam of Paoli, OK; three sisters-in-law, Charlotte Johnson of Haskell, Sue Morton of Stamford, and Karla Coffman of Jacksboro; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

This has been a wonderful week for me, my birthday was on Tuesday and I want to thank everyone that thought of me with a card, call, and other messages on my day, and especially the gifts. I really enjoyed meeting my family at the steak house in Abilene for a wonderful meal and fun.

I especially was surprised and happy to see Chef Darlene when she came and brought me a delicious birthday cake. It was a wonderful day for number 93.

Read thank you cards from students, talked about projects, showed quilt that had been put together by some of the members, sewed by Nan and ready to quilt for the Club Bazaar that will be held in November. Karleigh Hertel of Rule was introduced as a new member. Members discussed the date night for the Club and it was decided on Tuesday, August 20th. We’ll meet at the Lutheran Church at 6:30 P M. Cheryl passed out the supplies and she and Karleigh helped each lady make their own Sugar Scrub which they are going to enjoy. Tomzie ask each lady to save the ring of the tops of fruit jar lids for a project coming up. Joan and Tomzie served delicious refreshments, and Nancy won the door prize.

Paula showed a picture of a beautiful bouquet she made from crepe paper.

Mittie and Shelly Dunham went to Lubbock on Tuesday for appointments and while they were there they enjoyed a nice visit and lunch with their grandson/ son, Colton Hill and his friend, Keana Serene.

I attended the Baldree Family Reunion at the home of Mike and Maxelle Baldree near Tuscola on Saturday. Everyone enjoyed a meal of brisket, sausage, and all the trimmings with lots of delicious desserts.

Attending along with me and the host and hostess were Amanda Kern and Adalyn from Granbury, J G and Sara Heidenheimer, Zachary and Rylan from Severn, Maryland, Dean and Michelle Lowack from Ft Worth, Eddie Lowack from Weatherford, Daryl and Kim Schuchart from San Antonio, Susan Kittley, Chris and Lindsey Baldree,, Duke and Brody from Abilene, Marcie Tucker from Hamby, Stephen Kittley from Sweetwater, R G Hanson from Ft Worth, and Brian and Tracy Hilbert and Lilly from Tomball, Texas. Everyone had a great time visiting and enjoying the food.

I was overnight guest of Mike and Maxelle Baldree on Saturday and returned home on Sunday.

The family of August and Augusta Teichelman held their family reunion at the Old Glory Community Center on Saturday with fifty five in attendance. The family of Corene Teichelman Lowack were host for this years reunion. The group enjoyed lots of good food, visiting, playing games and the exciting auction. Gladys Vahlenkamp was the oldest at 92. Emma Corzine of Stamford was the youngest at 5, and Gary and Modene Mohel from Taylor came the longest distance. Married the longest were Alden and Janis Lowack at 53 years and Justin and Amber Corzine of Stamford the least. The Minnie (Teichelman) Vahlenkamp’s family had the most present. Folks attended from Taylor, Tuscola, Austin, Hutto, Haskell, Stamford, Amarillo, Aledo, Aspermont, Rule, Lubbock, Sagerton, and Old Glory.

Mittie Dunham enjoyed having lunch with Charley and Mary Grisham, Mattie Weaver and Johnnie Nell Pittcock.

Phyllis Letz was in Abilene on Tuesday and met her daughter, Jana and her grandchildren and granddaughter, Deann for dinner and a nice visit. On Wednesday Phyllis was back in Abilene for appointments and met the same family members for lunch.

Danny Letz played at Buck’s in Sweetwater on Saturday evening. He and Phyllis went early so they could eat dinner out.

Kara Briggs and Crete visited with Glen and Helen Pierce on Saturday.

We want to wish Sherry (Rhoads) Breeding a speedy recovery from her injuries. She fell and broke bones in both arms and have both of them in a sling. God Bless her. Her mother, Bernice Rhoads, had eye surgery recently.

Top Officials Attempt To Clarify New Hemp Law For Prosecutors Some district and county attorneys reportedly have begun to dismiss misdemeanor marijuana possession cases following the Texas Legislature’s passage of House Bill 1325, a law creating a legal path for the cultivation and marketing of hemp and hemp products.

Gov. Greg Abbott, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, House Speaker Dennis Bonnen and Attorney General Ken Paxton on July 18 sent a letter informing prosecutors that the Texas law, which takes effect Sept.

1, adopts the definition that differentiates between hemp and marijuana in the 2018 Farm Bill passed by Congress last year.

The farm bill, which delegates authority over the regulation, production and sale of hemp to the states, differentiates hemp from marijuana by setting a tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) threshold concentration of 0.3 percent for hemp and anything above 0.3 percent for marijuana.

HB 1325 directs the Texas Department of Agriculture to pass rules requiring hemp producers to be state-licensed and to test their products to ensure 0.3 percent or less THC concentration.

The Texas law also requires a shipping certificate that confirms the product in transport is legally compliant hemp.

Failure to have the required certificate during transport is a misdemeanor.

Some counties reportedly have raised an issue over the cost of lab testing that must be conducted on hemp to determine if seized samples are legally compliant or not.

To address that issue, Abbott, Patrick, Bonnen and Paxton wrote that prosecutors could use “circumstantial evidence” and, “As more companies enter the testing marketplace, the costs of the tests will certainly decline.”

nounced in a July 19 news release.

Also, the unemployment rate fell to 3.4 percent in June, the lowest rate recorded since 1976, when the state started tracking the unemployment rate. The previous low unemployment rate of 3.5 percent was recorded in May. “June’s unemployment rate is a historic win for employers and workers across the state,” said TWC Chair and Commissioner Representing Employers Ruth R. Hughs. “It is a reflection of our excellent businesses, skilled workforce and the hard work of every Texan.”

The Trade, Transportation and Utilities industry led job growth in June, adding 10,500 jobs. Leisure and Hospitality was second, adding 10,000 jobs.

The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area recorded the lowest unemployment rate among Texas MSAs in June with a non-seasonally adjusted rate of 2.1 percent, followed by the Amarillo, Austin-Round Rock and Odessa MSAs, each of which recorded a rate of 2.7 to tie for second place.

UT UPS TUITION ASSISTANCE The University of Texas System Board of Regents on July 16 voted unanimously to establish a $160 million endowment from a distribution of the state’s Permanent University Fund that will generate money for financial assistance beginning in fall 2020.

“Recognizing both the need for improved access to higher education and the high value of a UT Austin degree, we are

dedicating a distribution from the Permanent University Fund to establish an endowment that will directly benefit students and make their degrees more affordable,” UT Regents Chair Kevin Eltife said after the vote. “This will benefit students of our great state for years to come.”

The new endowment will be used to expand UT Austin’s Texas Advance Commitment program for in-state undergraduate students to: —Completely cover tuition and fees for students from families that earn up to $65,000 a year who have financial need, and, —Provide some assured tuition support to students from families with incomes of up to $125,000 who have financial need.

AG INTERVENES IN LAWSUIT Attorney General Paxton on July 19 announced his intervention in a lawsuit filed by a dozen business organizations against the city of San Antonio to strike down the city’s paid sick leave ordinance.

The ordinance is scheduled to take effect Aug. 1. In court papers filed in a Bexar County state district court, Paxton explained that the state constitution gives the Legislature the authority to set the minimum amount of compensation established for workers, including the minimum amount of paid time off.

“The Legislature established the minimum amount of compensation for workers, and the Texas Constitution prohibits local municipalities from ignoring the Legislature’s decision,” Paxton wrote.

DISASTER DECLARATION GRANTED President Trump on July 17 granted Gov. Abbott’s July 10 request for “Individual Assistance” for those in severe weather- and flood-stricken Cameron, Hidalgo and Willacy counties in the Rio Grande Valley.

Individual Assistance provides up to $34,000 per household for damages.

Ready, Aim, Fire John Wesley Powell was an American scientist, soldier, and explorer. He lost most of one arm to a rifle bullet at the Battle of Shiloh in the American Civil War and though this injury pained Major Powell the rest of his life, it didn’t stop him. In 1869, armed with nine men and four dubious wooden boats, he set out to map the unexplored parts of the Colorado River. That journey is a tale within itself (and many books have been written to that effect), but three months later, Powell’s group became the first to navigate the Colorado River all the way through the treacherous, mysterious Grand Canyon. Powell would devote rest of his life to the American West, as a geologist, ethnographer, and chief of the U.S. Geological Survey as it undertook the audacious goal to map the entire Western United States.

ESSAYS FROM WEST OF 98 James M. Decker versial in his day. He made powerful enemies out of Western politicians, promoters, and land speculators who were selling the American West as a proverbial Garden of Eden.

These “boomers” called for rapid settlement and development, predicting the West as America’s future population center. Though it was dry, they claimed rain would “follow the plow”—more homesteaders would cause the climate

to become wetter and more humid (this once-widespread delusion, which helped cause the Dust Bowl, is a topic for a different day).

Powell saw the West as a land of promise, but carefully planned. Water was scarce.

This country was very different from “back East.” He called for the West to be surveyed and lands classified according to best use, then developed accordingly. Powell believed in a “ready, aim, fire” philosophy.

For his trouble, he branded a heretic, stripped of his Congressional appropriations, and removed from his post at the USGS. Over 120 years later, many fights in the West—water scarcity, environmental issues, rapid development of large cities—were foreseen by Major Powell. The Dust Bowl itself might have been prevented had the country listened to Powell.

Last week, I attended the Texas Midwest Community Network’s annual seminar for newly elected local officials.

At this event, regional leaders discussed various topics of city

administration and community leadership with new council members and mayors. Several times, attendees asked about economic development. How do we bring business to our towns? Texas is booming. Our statewide leaders constantly boast about job creation and economic growth. Why aren’t our rural communities benefiting? These are questions that all community leaders should think about. Several speakers emphasized the importance of having a plan and pursuing that plan. As I thought of planning, I thought of John Wesley Powell. As the boomers raced to develop the West, Powell warned against developing without a plan. He was shouted down in the national conversation for essentially asking America to have a plan, to aim THEN fire.

As we think about economic development, we should think like Powell, not the boomers.

Our rural landscape is littered with economic development ideas that became disasters.

The tale is told in abandoned

facilities (often built with taxpayer dollars), junked equipment stacked on vacant lots, and employee layoffs. That’s not to say that we shouldn’t stick our neck out. Sometimes, good ideas and intelligent decisions result in failure. We cannot avoid failure or we’ll never accomplish anything great.

But sometimes, rural economic development victories feel few and far between, so we reach for whatever opportunity arises. We need jobs and new investment, so the taxpayers don’t get frustrated with us.

If we don’t seize an opportunity that passes by, some other town will grab it. It can be aggravating to look down the road and see good things happening in another city and wonder “why not us?” I get it.

But short-term gains are not always long-term successes.

Just ask the Western states embroiled in decades-long fights over water supplies that they thought were infinite. If only they had listened to Powell, they might have known water was scarce.

It seems like we have unlimited land to develop in our communities, but that can change quickly. What if we get so desperate for short-term gain that we give away all the best development sites to subpar opportunities? What happens when a true gamechanging opportunity comes to town and we can’t support it?

Short term gains are important, but not at the expense of longterm victories.

What if we had the patience and the courage to develop our rural communities like Major Powell wanted to develop the West? What if we first aim at the target—identify our resources and their best use— and then grow from there?

PAPER: Continued From Page 1 Metler-Smith purchased the Stamford American in 2008 from Lewis and Becky Alambar. The Alambars published the paper from May 1, 1993 to June 5, 2008. In 1994 the Alambars bought the building at 112 E. Hamilton and sold it to the Cloud Insurance Agency in 1998 when they bought the building at 124 E. Hamilton.

The Stamford American had been published at 124 E. Hamilton since 1945.

The China Wok restaurant presently occupies this location and the Stamford American name can still be seen on the front of the building. According to Jewellee Kuenstler, when the paper changed hands in 1993, from John Mooney to the Alambars, the printing itself was carried out at 124 E. Hamilton and office supplies were sold in the front. Mooney, with his wife Rita, were the first to bring computers into the printing process.

Kuenstler stated she worked for Mooney and the Alambars for about a year doing an assortment of tasks, one being to fill in left over spaces with fun facts and quotes. She said the experience helped her to get a job with the Abilene Reporter News classified ads department.

“Technology has come a long way,” Kuenstler stated referring to the more hands on requirements before newspapers joined the computer age.

John Mooney bought the Stamford American from Dorothy Craig in 1985, her husband Roy passed away in 1979. The Craigs owned the paper for 40 years and according to an article in the November 13, 1975 issue of the American, it was “one of the most modern weekly newspaper plants in the country.” It was stated in the June 4, 2009 issue, “The newspaper plant, in addition to printing the American, was responsible for printing the papers in Anson, Clyde, Baird,

Haskell, Rochester, Albany, Hamlin, Aspermont, Knox City, Throckmorton and the paper for Abilene Christian College.” They also printed programs for the Texas Cowboy Reunion from 1949 to 1985.

Mooney bought the building at 124 E. Hamilton in 1987. In 1990 he sold the building to Jerry Wallace, who printed the paper, and Wallace sold it to the Alambars in 1998. The Alambars sold it to 5D Partners, who sold it in 2012.

The trunk of the tree is solid and this is where forks in the business family tree appear. On one branch the first Stamford American was started by R.C. Thomas April 25, 1924 and he sold it to Cleburne Huston in September of 1925. The paper was located at 114 E. Hamilton from 1924 to 1945. Huston published the Stamford American for twenty years when he sold it to the partnership of W.S. Foster and Roy M. Craig, with Fred Shaver being a partner for about one month.

On another branch a Mr. Rhea & Mr. Lacy began the Stamford News in 1900, when Stamford itself was formed. They sold it to a Methodist Minister, Samuel Gay, and in the August 12, 1904 issue the paper was in the News Building, East Side of the Square. Reverend Gay sold the News to

A.N. Evans, plus J.M. Web for a short time, in 1907. J.S Daley bought the paper in 1908 and rented it to C.E. Gilbert, then Jim Fore.

At about the same time the Stamford Tribune began in 1905 by a Mr. Sales. In 1906 he sold it to J.A. Greer, who sold it to Judge Greenwood in 1910. It was in 1910 that the two competitors, Daley and Greenwood, decided to merge and created the Stamford News-Tribune.

In 1913 Greenwood sold his interest in the paper to George L. Inglish.

Inglish changed the name of the paper to the Stamford Leader. According to the paper archives, the Leader was located June 2, 1925 – October 26, 1928 at 114 W. McHarg; February 7, 1936 – June 27, 1941 at

105 S. Ferguson St. and in August 2, 1946 on the East Side of Square, Center of the Block.

The first two branches of the business family tree came together and between 1900 and 1913 went from the Stamford News and the Stamford Tribune to the Stamford News-Tribune, then to the Stamford Leader.

There were two other competitors starting papers, but they did not go the distance. In 1921 Wilson Kilgore started the Stamford American Daily, which is no relation to the current Stamford American.

The last issue was published in 1922. The Dearing brothers also made an attempt to join the competition with their Stamford Observer, but it also soon closed.

The business family tree is joined by another branch when the Stamford American’s partnership of Foster and Craig bought out the Stamford Leader in the last half of 1948.

They jointly owned the Leader and the American but published separately.

The Leader came out at the first of the week and the American came out at the end of the week before consolidating the two. The December 26, 1950 issue of the Stamford American was the first to combine the American with the Leader.

At the beginning of 1951 W.S. Foster was no longer listed in the credential information for the Stamford American. From that point to the present the Stamford American has been owned and operated by family members or individuals.

In Fall of 2012 the New Stamford American was given the distinction of being a satellite location to renew vehicle registrations for Jones County, TX. In 2016, working with the Stamford Carnegie Library, a Tocker Foundation Grant was awarded to digitize the Stamford News, Stamford

Leader and Stamford American archives that survived over the years. They can be accessed for free at the University of North Texas’ The Portal to Texas History website: texashistory.unt. edu.

Never Stop Dreaming Much like the 75th anniversary of D-Day last month, we have now seen another milestone in history on the very day that I am writing this column as on July 21st, 1969, one of the most quoted events took place as Neil Armstrong, after landing on the surface with fellow astronaut Buzz Aldrin six hours earlier on July 20th, said the famous words as he took the first THOUGHTS FROM steps of any human being on the Moon: “That’s one small step for UNDER THE CAP man. One giant leap for mankind.”

It was the realization of a promise Will McClure made by then-President John F. Kennedy in 1961 that by the end of the decade the United States would land a man on the Moon and return him safely to Earth. 50 years later this historic moment is still being talked about to this day and rightfully so as while advances in technology have been significant and new interests have popped up over the years, the thought of making advancements in space have continued to inspire many individuals and influenced future goals such as the Artemis program with the goal of landing “the first woman and the next man” on the Moon by 2024 and begin establishing a long-term goal of establishing a sustainable presence on the Moon and eventually send humans to Mars (at least in orbit) by 2033. It is goals like this that help make dreams become reality, even if one’s dream to one day go into space helps make it a reality for another generation.

This event does bring me to my thoughts for the week and that is the concept of dreaming for something. In the 1960s the United States was deep into the Space Race with Russia (then the Soviet Union) which itself was part of the Cold War. While it was in essence a competition to get to the Moon, it was still fueling dreamers on both sides to get there one day. Many may combat these dreamers by saying the dreams will “never happen,” and what a dreamer does next will truly define them. The goal set by President Kennedy in 1961 fueled a lot of dreams to be a part of something big and not just become a part of history. Those that challenge dreams, at least in my opinion, have possibly had their own dreams taken away from them by another putting them down and then leading to giving up. When we listen to doubters, that is when dreams truly die out and, as a result, good things may never happen. However, with the right support and the right mindset, any dream can be possible.

Whether your dream is something small that just applies to yourself or even to become part of something greater, let this 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing be a reassurance that dreams and goals can be reached, even it if seems impossible.

Believe in yourself and your dream can become a reality. Find the right support group to keep pushing you forward. Sometimes you may even have supporters from those that may criticize your efforts. It may seem like that are trying to get you to give up, but they may be just encouraging you to rethink your actions in a different way. Know what you can do and how you can do it to prepare yourself for future steps, and if you dream may take a long time and is part of something greater it may inspire the next generation to pursue the same dream. Always remember that you should never stop dreaming because you never know when your one small step can turn into a giant leap.

Bill Found Work After Retirement

“ I got in the cow business in 97 and it quit raining. Got out in 2017 and it hadn’t quit raining yet.”

Bill Foster lives at Duster, just west of De Leon. He spent 33 years as a teacher, principal and superintendent of schools. One day he saw an ad for extras in a movie.

“I just went down to Austin and got in line with 1,500 other people. The folks doing the movie looked me over and apparently liked what they saw and I got a part. I had a big screen debut in Alita Battle Angel. Played a drunk. I actually had about 4 seconds on the screen all by myself leaning against a building passed out.”

That was in 2016. Since then he has been in other movies, television series and commercials. One of his commercials aired during a Super Bowl game. He was a principal extra in seasons four and five of Fear Of The Walking Dead. Bill really got involved in movies, the

stage and writing. He wrote a movie and was going to shoot it on his iPhone but it got out of hand.

“My 30-page script is now over a hundred pages and the cast of 4 or 5 actors that volunteered to help me has grown to over a hundred cast and crew.”

He has written two books and one play that had its premiere in Brownwood’s Lyric Theater. Another book is due out soon about a cattle drive. A book he wrote titled I Heard The Quail Whistle won a writing award. He wants to make movies of both those books. He also has started a vineyard in Comanche County.

“We’ve got all the grapes sold and haven’t grown a grape yet. There’s a big demand for them right now. The vineyard is our big thing. Acting is secondary.”

“As soon as I stood up I knew I broke my leg. But I got back in the saddle and finished all my scenes. I’m directing it, too, so I finished directing that day. The next day I finished a 12-hour shift there. We wrapped up my leg and kept ice on it. When it came time for me to get in front of the camera

I’d put on my cowboy boot, do the acting, go back behind the camera and do my directing for another 12 hours. One of my actors is actually the number one pain doctor in San Antonio and he told me to come on in Monday morning and he’d x-ray it for me. That’s when I found out it was broken.”

Bill is no stranger to surgery.

“I had my second back surgery last summer. I finally got over that then I went elk hunting and the horse slipped in the mud and fell and I broke this same leg. It was not quite as severe as this one. But I stayed up there and elk hunted and then after about a week I decided I had better come home. The pain overtook the desire to kill an elk.”

Having recently spent a couple of days at a tree conference which was put on by the International Society of Arboriculture, Texas Forest Service, and the Texas Agrilife Extension Service, and a group from A&M, I got to spend a lot of time with some of the “lab types”. That’s always interesting, and the information exchange between people who work in the field, and people who do research, both in the field and in the lab, is two-way at this kind of thing. I do have to admit that I find it pretty amusing when I get to watch one of the people from the scientific end of things try to physically do some minor tree work.

I’ve often mentioned that as great of a job as the research types do, getting us good information, that we can put to use, that there are some things they get wrong. The usual subject that I pick on when I bring this up is the recommendation from the tech end of tree planting that a planting hole should be three times the width of a new tree’s root ball. Since that translates into a six foot wide hole in someone’s yard, just to install a thirty gallon tree, I think they’re going way overboard with such a recommendation.

My thinking is the only place that kind of over-size planting hole gets dug is on government jobs, where they require strict adherence to industry recommendations, no matter how much time it wastes, and how much money it costs (they’re only spending tax money after all). I don’t personally know of any arborists that are habitually digging six foot wide pits in people’s yards to plant a thirty gallon tree.

Another thing that comes to us from the scientific end of our industry is the recommendations to use products containing chelated iron for trees that are suffering from iron chlorosis. In short, chlorosis, another subject I write frequently about, is when a tree is short on an element,

to the point that it is suffering effects from that shortage. In our area, the most common chlorosis problem is a shortage of iron, hence the name “iron chlorosis”.

The general recommendation from the scientific end of the tree world is to treat such trees with either chelated iron, or spray the foliage with an iron supplement. Not to get into a lot of detail, and there is definitely a lot of detail involved in it, but chelated iron is simply iron that is “attached” to some other element that the tree would be able to pick up. The idea behind this attachment is that when the tree took in that other element, it would accidently get the iron it so desperately needs. The funny thing about this particular recommendation is that I have spent a lot of time reading about how this works, talking with scientists from other fields, and really trying to learn how the chelated iron works, or should work, for trees. At the end of all of that study, I determined that as far as I could see, or anybody else could, chelated iron should work for trees, and take care of chlorosis issues. On the other hand, practical experience, and continually beating my head against a brick wall, has proven to me that chelated iron and foliar sprays of iron essentially have no effect on chlorotic trees. I don’t blame the lab types on this one, as I can see clearly for myself why they think chelated iron is the way to go, I just happen to know, for a fact, that it doesn’t work.

On the other hand, sometimes, well to be honest, nearly every time, when we have get-togethers like this, the people from the study end of things have some good information to disseminate down to us.

I’m not so much talking about studious papers or long projects that they’ve been working on, although sometimes those are included. What I’m referring to are usually little things that they have learned, or slight changes to methods,

For instance, in this particular get together, one of the subjects was testing for a particular tree disease, that can be a little difficult to get a good test on. Sample quality, and timing, is very important in this test, and we got a good demonstration of a way to harvest a little bit better quality of a sample, and how to prepare and handle it for the best possible lab results. That was important information, and getting it straight from somebody who processed samples in the lab was very helpful.

Certainly, most of the above would be of the most interest to a person such as myself. However, even though there may be some disconnect between what is recommended at the research/brain trust level, and what actually occurs, or works in the field, or vice-versa, All of this shows that, depending on who you use, there can be a very long chain of knowledge and experience, that ends up with the person in your yard, actually performing the work.

Hope y’all are well! I’ve been getting a lot of folks asking lately, so I’m just going to openly address it here now. As most of y’all have come to notice, either by no one answering the phone, or trying to come by to visit, the museum has been closed for a few weeks now. So, what’s going on?

Due to an overly abundant rainfall over the last year, (Farmer’s Co-Op Gin of Stamford has counted 17.33” of rainfall since January 1, 2019) the city is now undergoing repairs and maintenance on the building.

Needless to say, being closed for Rodeo was hard to face, it couldn’t have come at a more inopportune time. We were extraordinarily blessed to have some long-planned events hosted by friends at other spaces. Children’s art lessons were hosted at the library. Our Outsider Art Round Up Pop Up exhibit was a grand success at the Grand Theatre.

The City Council Chamber worked out perfectly to stage The University of North Texas’ presentation on the Portal to Texas History (which we live streamed and recorded via Facebook so it could be attended by Stamford Exes who tuned in from various locations like Monahans, San Antonio, and Houston).

It has been said, “The flower that blooms in adver-

sity is the most rare and beautiful of all.” Being a steward to our rich history has become a true calling of mine… and despite these setbacks, the most amazing things are now happening!

As y’all recall, our Painted Ponies children’s art program received national acclaim when the kids won Mark Maggiori’s art contest. The response from the art world has been overwhelmingly amazing, some big-time artists are now asking to be a part of it. Having top name artists partnering with the museum again has been long term goal of mine and something I’ve been working diligently at for the last two years.

My husband says I like to “take on the impossible,” and some folks brushed this idea off as a pipe dream. So, I say this with a smirk on my face… it is happening. It is happening now!

I am pleased to share with you we are now part-

nering with Logan Maxwell Hagege, who has offered his painting “A Day in the West” for our next installment in the series for the kids to paint. Stay tuned for dates and locations on that. The Painted Ponies Rural Art Project is my baby, and it will be traveling with me so Stamford’s kids may continue to live this dream!

At the same time, I am also continuing archival work with the Swenson family at the SMS office.

Our history is too important to take a break on, and I intend to keep sharing more dispatches from the vault with you all.

What a blessing to have this partnership and space to work in, I am beyond grateful!

ROTARY CLUB NEWS The Club had a business meeting to address issues that needed attention. Afterward, Rotarian Lisa Terrell, mother of a sophomore, talked about the girl’s athletic program in Stamford. With mostly freshman and sophomore girls, the softball team has not lost a district game.

In track, the girls have done well in competition. Under the leadership of Coach Cynthia Herrera, she talked about how the girls have bonded together and brought the success that developed with the wins. She told how exciting it is to see what is happening, and how the support of the parents has helped.

Each year the Rotary Club gives a $1000.00 Scholarship to a graduating senior based strictly on an essay on a selected topic. This year the topic was “WHAT ARE THE TOP INFLUENCES THAT HAVE HELPED YOU IN MAKING DECISIONS AS YOU PLAN FOR YOUR FUTURE”. This was probably the best group of essays that we have ever had, but two of the essays were so outstanding that we had to award two scholarships instead of one. The recipients were Peyton Bevel and Nolan Baker. Peyton Bevel plans to attend West Texas A & M and Nolan Baker plans to attend Lubbock Christian University. We know that they have great futures ahead and we wish them well.

Dale Spurgin has been Jones County Judge since January 2003, and has served the County well for 16 years.

He talked about some of the things that need to be addressed now. It is time to begin work on the new budget for Jones County, he told about the solar farm project that will cover 6000 acres in Jones County, and about a new 12 year contract to sell electricity that needs to be completed. Dale said that with regard to policy development, he learned how an issue can involve multiple interest groups and that any policy that can be narrowly defined can have unintended consequences on other people or their industry. He said that the only thing typical was that a day starts at 8:00 AM and ends 24 hours later. You never know what may come up that needs to be addressed. He has been involved in the Jones County Farm Bureau, California Creek Soil and Water Conservation District, and the inaugural class of the Texas Agriculture Lifetime Leadership Program.

Danny jImenez was appointed Jones County Sheriff on January 1, 2019. He was previously the Jones County Constable and has served in law enforcement for over 33 years. With all of his experience, he has observed many things that can be improved. One of the programs is Narcotics Anonymous. It is a nonprofit fellowship or society for men and women for whom drugs have become a major problem. It is composed of addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean. The program is one of complete abstinence from all drugs. It is a 12 week program and strictly volunteer. It is a Christian based program and upon completion they are given a certificate that may give them credit for probation.

They are given a book and have assignments where they have to do research each week. Sheriff Jimenez talked about other things as well, and provided an informative program.

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Scholars Presented With $1.4 Million In Scholarships During Annual Texas FFA State Convention Seventy Texas FFA members were presented with $1.4 million in scholarships from the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo during the 91st Texas FFA State Convention in Fort Worth, Texas, on Wednesday, July 17.

“The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo awarded its very first scholarship in 1957 to a member of Texas FFA,” said Joel Cowley, president and CEO of the Rodeo. “We are proud to continue this tradition today by supporting the efforts of these talented and dedicated FFA members as they pursue their educational goals.”

Each FFA Scholarship recipient will receive a $20,000 scholarship from the Rodeo to apply toward a four-year undergraduate degree at a Texas college or university of their choice.

Of the 70 FFA scholarship recipients, the top three schools they will attend

are Texas A&M University, Texas Tech University and Tarleton State University, and the top three majors include Animal Science, Agricultural Business and Agricultural Communications. Seventy one percent of the recipients are female and 29% are male.

The Texas FFA Association was chartered in 1929 and contributes to a model of secondary agricultural education in which students take part in classroom instruction and supervised agricultural experiences.

Scholarship recipients were selected by Texas FFA officials based on the students’ involvement with the program, academic and FFA achievements and financial need. These scholarships represent a portion of the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo’s annual commitment of more than $27 million to scholarships, junior show exhibitors,
