Capital Murder Case Jury Selection Update

There were 1,400 summonses sent out to Jones County residents to be considered for the jury of the upcoming capital murder trial to be held at the Jones County Courthouse in Anson, Texas.

Due to the number of people, the potential jury members met in the Anson High School Auditorium on Monday, August 13, 2018. The qualification process resulted in the 1,400 being reduced to 484 people.

The second day of jury selection was again held at the auditorium and a lengthy questionnaire was filled out by the remaining prospective jurors. The prosecutors and defense lawyers then spent over a week evaluating the questionnaires. The panel of 260 found out on Friday, August 24th, if they would be scheduled for the individual voir dire process that began on Monday, August 27, 2018 at the courthouse.

Behind the Scenes: SISD Administration Office

BY HOLLY BEARDEN While many people in our community may know the teachers and students of SISD, they may not know what goes on behind the scenes in the administration office. This talented group of people work extremely hard to make sure everything at SISD runs smoothly and is the best that it can be.

Dr. Shaun Barnett is the Superintendent of SISD and has been for the last 8 years. He graduated from Plains High School and went to Angelo State for his Bachelors in Physical Education with a minor in History. He then received his Masters in Education from Sul Ross and his Superintendent certification from Texas Tech.

Better Stamford School Supply Drive Sees Success In First Year The Better Stamford School Supply Drive saw great success in its inaugural year, raising approximately $7,000 worth of school supplies for the elementary, middle school, and high school students of Stamford.

The supply drive, organized by a local group of young professionals which included Kassidy Martin of Central Texas Farm Credit of Haskell as well as Jessica Decker and Emily Burds of Oreana Communications, were able to collect about $3,000 worth of school supplies via their local drop-off locations as well as over $4,000 in monetary donations, all of which was spent here in the Big Country.

“We never knew this idea could become what it did, or that it would have such tremendous community support in our first year,” said Kassidy Martin, one of the organizers. “I was excited to be a part of an initiative that could give back to every student and teacher in Stamford. I want to personally thank everyone who helped us make this such a great success and a truly impactful experience for all of us.”

The supplies were delivered to the schools on Monday, August 13th and were available for students to pick up during the Meet the Teachers night and throughout the first day of school.

Thanks to it being Tax-Free Weekend (August 10 – 12), along with the tremendous Back-To-School deals and discounts the organizers were given, they were able to make every penny count so that every donation truly went to the students and teachers of Stamford. This amounted to a savings of over $2,150 across the board.

The organizers would like to thank the community for their generosity.

They would especially like to thank their local drop-off locations; Decker Capital Partners, SGDA Law, Stamford American, Stamford Star, the Stamford Chamber of Commerce, Dollar General, and Unperfect Fried Pies for their support of this endeavor. The organizers would also like to thank Stamford Walmart, Abilene Office Depot and Abilene Sam’s for their assistance and hospitality.

They would also like to specially

thank Mayor James Decker for his support of this supply drive. Mayor Decker helped to diligently spread the word, ensuring the message reached a broad audience.

“What a great way to kick off a new year,” said Mayor James Decker, “A community expressing love for its children by opening up their generous hearts and by new leaders stepping up to make an impact.”

The organizers plan to continue the Better Stamford School Supply Drive as an annual event and look forward to the future of this fundraiser, with hopes to expand and bring aid to students in other local communities. ESSAYS FROM WEST OF 98 James M. Decker

Rural Summits and Regionalism On August 22, Stamford City Councilman Paul Wright and I attended the first West Texas Rural Summit in Lubbock. Hosted by U.S. Congressman Jodey Arrington, this summit brought together over 50 mayors, county judges, city councilmen, school superintendents, sheriffs, and economic developers from the 29 counties that make up Arrington’s 19th District.

Discussions focused on three main agenda items: drug epidemics, rural healthcare, and economic development. Through a day’s worth of panel discussions, Q&A, and informal conversation, something is abundantly clear: throughout West Texas, we share the same problems. Each local place has its variations, but the big picture problems are the same, whether in Stamford, Haskell, Plainview, Post, or Muleshoe. Rather than fight battles alone and do things the hard way, local leaders are starting to work together. This was the first summit, but it’s the start of something big for the future.

My friend Jay Leeson hosts a talk radio show and podcast out of Lubbock and is one of West Texas’ foremost advocates.

He calls Lubbock the

“Rural Metropolis,” rightly observing that, though Lubbock is a bigger city, its fate is intertwined with the rural communities around it. The problems of the rural economy don’t stop at the Lubbock city limits. The same goes for Abilene, Amarillo, San Angelo, Midland, Odessa, and Wichita Falls. These cities are rural metropolitan areas. They may have an independent economy, but their fates are intertwined with the small towns around them. If rural communities around an Abilene die off, there are fewer people to shop, visit, and spend money in those metro areas. If those cities struggle and stumble, it affects the quality of life in the rural communities of their region.

That extends to a smaller level too. Ken Becker, executive director of Sweetwater Economic Development, stated that Sweetwater’s labor force and spending comes from a 60-mile radius. Sweetwater has taken the approach that positive economic development within that radius will affect Sweetwater in a positive way, and they’re right.

Each of our communities should think similarly.

We all want ALL the jobs and ALL the spending in

our city limits, but that’s not practical. As someone pointed out, what if you could force all your residents to do all their spending in your town? Keeping all your dollars at home sounds great, right? But what if the other towns could do it too? So, you could get all the spending from your town, but not a dime from residents of neighboring towns? That would turn into a pretty poor trade. New residents and jobs might go to a neighboring community, but if those folks live and work down the road but shop and eat in your town (particularly if you have a unique retail or restaurant establishment), the economic development benefits you as well.

I’ll talk about other aspects of this Rural Summit in coming weeks, but this regional mindset should be very important to each of us. It is in Abilene’s best interest for Stamford to thrive and vice versa. But it’s also in Stamford’s best interest for Haskell, Munday, and the like to thrive, and vice versa.

Like it or not, our fates are intertwined with the region and cities large and small. It is entirely up to us whether we want to work together to make that fate a positive one for all.

James Decker is a lawyer, farmer, and mayor in Stamford, and the creator of the forthcoming “West of 98” podcast and website.

His daily job activities include being administrator of the district, taking care of personnel matters, policies and procedures as well as financial issues. He sets the vision for the district and hopes to provide leadership and support for the district.

His goals for the year are to maintain the success that Stamford has had over the last several years. Every student now has a technology device and the elementary school has been remodeled and is up to standards.

“Over the last several years we have achieved a lot of accomplishments. The big initiatives have been met and we are just working on keeping it up,” he says.

Staci Robertson is the Assistant Superintendent for Stamford ISD and has been with the school district for 25 years. She received her Bachelor’s of Business Administration from Angelo State in 1986 and a Master of Science in Management with specialization in School Administration from A&M Commerce in 2010. She is married to Jeff Robertson and has one son, Brandon, who graduated from Stamford in 2014.

Being the Assistant Superintendent of SISD Robertson deals with any and all monetary business. This includes accounts payable, HR, budgeting, state funding and many others. When asked how she manages to keep everything in line she replied, “I’ve been doing this so long that I know what needs to be done at one certain time. When I first arrived at this position

the person who previously had it trained me for three months. After that, I called her a whole lot with questions.”

Her favorite part of her day to day duties is the state legislature as it changes every 2 years. She also enjoys the state funding calculations and thinks it is interesting to see how it all comes together.

Robertson’s favorite part of being a Stamford Bulldog is going to games and seeing the role that she plays within the school. “It’s neat to see everything that I was fiscally responsible for in action.”

Joan Hager is the Administrative Assistant/ Superintendent’s Secretary for SISD. This is her 32nd year working for the school.

She started in the cafeteria, went to the middle school library, then was the secretary at Reynolds Elementary and then came to the administration office. Her job title is the administrative assistant/secretary to the superintendent.

Her day to day job duties include; coordination of PEIMS reports, answering phones, directing calls to campuses, personnel files, filing, HR duties and fingerprinting new employees/substitutes. Joan’s favorite part of her job is seeing things in a different perspective and seeing how the heart of Stamford ISD works.

Her favorite part of being a Stamford Bulldog is seeing how everything comes together. She enjoys the success that Stamford has in UIL, academics, athletics

and all parts of SISD. The Federal Programs Director of Stamford High School is Jennifer Hinds.

She has been with SISD for a year and a half. She was a school auditor for 12 years and thinks it is fun to be on the district side. Her job duties include child nutrition applications, federal grant files, transportation reports, homeless, foster and migrant liaisons and accounts payable.

Her favorite part of being in the administration office is that she loves working with everyone and also getting to enjoy her love for school finance and accounting. She enjoys being a Stamford Bulldog because she loves the color blue and the friendliness of the community as well as her office mates.

He enjoys the people that he works with and believes SISD has a fantastic staff and exceptional students.

“My favorite thing about being a part of SISD is the support from the community in all aspects. Stamford has had academic and athletic success and it helps me to enjoy my career at Stamford. The community is the best community I’ve ever been a part of.”

HELLO FROM COWBOY COUNTRY By Jewellee Kuenstler The closing of the hospital has been the end of a chapter in Stamford’s history. Change is inevitable, but remembering the impact that the hospital played in the story of Stamford might ease its passing.

Stamford was founded in 1900, and although there were doctors “among the pioneers settling the territory”, there was no hospital for the first ten years. In 1910, a 12-bed, 2 story framed building was constructed on East Gould Street. The Stamford Sanitarium was built by the combined efforts of Dr. Sam Webb, of Albany, and Dr. M.E. Lott of Navasota. Both of these doctors were chief surgeons for the Texas Central Railroad.

Since they were employed by the railroad, they needed to provide medical care for its employees, so they also built a 10-room annex specifically for railroad employees.

In the beginning, this was the only hospital between Fort Worth and El Paso.

During this time, the hospital had 17 doctors who also worked with area doctors from Avoca, Lueders, Old Glory, and Sagerton. This remained true until 1924, when Hendrick Hospital was built in Abilene.

Eventually, Dr. E.P. Bunkley bought out Dr. Webb’s share when he moved to Dallas, and Dr. Dallas

Southard acquired Dr. Lott’s interest. During a remodel in 1922, most of the original building was torn down, replaced by a new brick building. In 1929, a 15-bed addition was added to the original structure.

A non-profit corporation was formed in 1962 to take over the management of the hospital. The Board of Directors of this corporation picked by the local doctors, consisted of J.F. West, President; F.E. Upshaw, Secretary; A.C. Humphrey, Vice-President; Sam Baize, A.J. Mills, A.M.G. Swenson and W.T. Stovall. This was when the name was changed from the Stamford Sanitarium to Stamford Memorial Hospital.

Plans were started in 1966 to build a new hospital facility on the edge of town. By 1969, the new hospital was complete. It was a 50-bed facility. In 1975, it became apparent that this was not adequate to house the number of patients that were needing hospital care.

So, more plans were made to build an addition for 16 more beds. Two years later, a baby nursery, complete with eight beds for recovering mothers, brought the total occupancy to 74 beds.

At the time this was “the most modern facility for its size in this part of the country”.

Stamford has also been home to nursing train-

ing schools. The first was organized in 1910, when the first hospital was built.

According to the book, The First 100 Years of Jones County, “the nursing school was operated until 1939.”

Later, the new hospital held an LVN Nursing Program for many years.

If you are interested in more history of the hospital or the nursing programs, the Museum houses several resources, including scrapbooks with graduates from the LVN Nursing Program, and photos of babies born at the Stamford Memorial Hospital in the early 1980s.

We will present our new Stamford School/Homecoming Exhibit and list all the schools that have consolidated with Stamford ISD through the years. This is also the 52nd Anniversary of desegregation of public schools (yes, we are about 2 years late, sorry). Come by and see how we have come “together” to create the community we have today.

As we put together this exhibit we find we are sadly lacking in some areas. We are in need of information, pictures, or memories of the Bomar Heights School and the Booker T. Washington School. So, if you have any information we would

One of the important questions concerning a capital case is what the individual person’s ideology is concerning the death penalty. It needs to be determined that if the defendant is found to be guilty, would each juror be able to unbiasedly vote

for or against the death penalty.

The next step in the voir dire process for this capital case is to question each potential juror individually.

This is taking place in the District Courtroom on the second floor of the Jones County Courthouse. Judge Hagler stated six people will be questioned per day and these proceedings should result in a jury being seated by the end of September.

The capital murder trial of

D. G. Compton will begin on October 1, 2018.

On Monday, August 27th, Jack Choate, Prosecutor, explained to a potential juror that the role of a juror is to set aside biases or preconceived notions, to listen to the evidence, and to make decisions based on the evidence and according to Texas law. The prosecution and the defense have their work cut out for them over the next month.

Looks like the sprinkle I got early last Monday morning will be the last for a good while. The last of August is going to be hot and dry. It nearly always rains at the beginning of school, but not this year.

I was so very glad to have my granddaughter and her family, Sara and J G Heidenheimer, Zachary and Ryan from Serven, Maryland come to see me on Tuesday afternoon and spend the night with me.

On Wednesday we spent the day in Abilene with family members, had lunch with Susan, Chris and Duke, Marcie, Karen, Mike and Maxelle, and a friend of J G’s from HSU. We had a great time visiting. On Wednesday Sara and her crew went on their way to visit some more relatives in Texas and then to Florida to Disney World before returning back to Maryland.

They stopped by to see Rita at the Beauty Shop for a minute.

Mittie Dunham and Shelly were in Hamlin on Thursday to attend the funeral services for Gerald Weaver.

Colton Hill of Lubbock came on Friday to visit with his grandparents, Pide and Mittie Dunham and his mother, Shelly Dunham. He will spend a few days here visiting.

Bo and Whiz Creighton visited with the Dunhams on Sunday afternoon.

Dale and Carm Letz got

granddaughter, Hazelee New and she spent the night and all day Saturday with them. They took her home to Haskell on Saturday evening and had dinner with the family.

Phyllis Letz stated that she has been busy talking with grandchildren as they were all getting settle in at college. Rylan will be going to Levelland to a Jr. College, Madisyn at Texas Tech, Deann at Midwestern in Wichita Falls and Eric will be graduating from Midwestern in December.

She and Danny went to Sweetwater on Saturday evening to the VFW, Danny joined the Mike Turhle Band some for the dance.

We had a great musical at our Community Center on Saturday evening with approximately 60 in attendance. The music was great and we appreciate all the musicians that come a long way to play. We want to thank everyone for supporting our concession stand, the donations and to Mo’s Place for the ice. We could not have the nice Center if it were not for all of you.

Thanks to Jan Harris for helping us set up and to the Creightons for their help.

Always Pay it Forward It is nearing the end of August and school is officially back in session all around.

Before too long it will be time for football Friday nights, fall and winter activities, and getting ready to ring in the new year. We say all of the time that time always seems to go by so quickly, especially as we grow older, and we sometimes cannot find time to remember the people that have helped us along the way. This past Will McClure week, I gave an assignment to my students on the concept of “paying it forward” with the idea that it is an ideal time to spread a message of positivity so we can all slow down and appreciate one another. The assignment was for the student to choose someone that they appreciate and simply write them a letter showing that appreciation, with the results being nothing short of heartwarming. We completed the assignment towards the end of last week and I encouraged my students to deliver their letters as soon as possible, and the feedback that I have received so far has been nothing short of positive as something so simple made such a positive impact on a person’s life.

This brings me to my thoughts this week as I think there are times where we tend to forget to show our appreciation to the people that have been a positive influence in our lives. Whether it be a parent, a teacher, or a friend, we all have that special someone that has been a constant influence in our lives even when we were feeling down about ourselves. Even a simple “thank you” can brighten a person’s day when they know how much you appreciate them. We get so involved in what is happening in the news or social media that we tend to forget those around us that even the simple “thank you” goes unsaid. This week, however, I encourage each and every one of you to do your best to make sure that the people that we appreciate know that they are appreciated.

“Paying it forward” is such a simple concept, but it can be quickly forgotten about if not used consistently.

With all of the negativity in the world, we need positive forces to help each other each and every day. So, make that phone call that you’ve been wanting to do for so long but never could find the words. Take time to stop and talk to the person you appreciate to let them know what impact they have had on their lives. Or, you can do what my students did and that is use the often-forgotten art of writing a letter of appreciation so your person can hold onto your kind words. Whatever you choose to do, do not let things go unsaid and instead spread positivity as much as you can; and when you do so, encourage others to keep spreading the positive vibes to a person they appreciate and so on. If we can continue “paying it forward” and not let negativity overcome us, I think we can start to see the brighter things more often. More than likely, you have that person in your mind right know that you want to talk to in some shape or form to tell them how much they mean to you. Time is moving fast, so do not let the opportunity pass you by to spread positivity. Let us all do our part to “pay it forward” every single day and never let appreciation go unheard.

50 Years Go By In A Hurry I was chopping weeds around our house in the summer of 1969. Many of those weeds were tumbleweeds. I threw down my hoe, ran in the house and told my wife I was going to start a radio program and call it TUMBLEWEED. Ever ready to support me in any way, she went to the piano and created some introductory music. I made a recording of that little ditty and took it over to Dr. PW Malone’s house and he recorded a guitarist, Don Tolle, playing the piece on the guitar. I used that theme for years.

I had been doing features for a long time as part of my work as news director of KHEM Radio in Big Spring. Some of those features ended up on NBC Radio. I had been freelancing for that network since 1966. I got five of those features ready, created a little advertising piece and mailed them to 65 radio stations in West Texas.

The little advertisement indicated stations could pay me a small sum for the program and sell it for a large sum. One station bought it. KZZN in Little-

field. I had a network of two stations KZZN and KHEM. This was in July of 1969. I got busy and by the end of the year five stations had signed up for the program.

I was so encouraged I quit my job to devote fulltime to the program.

I drove about 100,000 miles a year selling the program to radio stations and interviewing Texas characters, musicians and storytellers. I reported on interesting places and explored Texas legends.

I was not too efficient. I would drive to Amarillo, do some selling and interviewing, then drive to Del Rio and do the same thing.

As years progressed, I became more organized.

Before I knew it I had done 200 programs and signed up enough stations to make a decent living.

It was a good time to start. We had just ex-

perienced a tumultuous decade. We had also just placed a man on the moon and Texas had a lot to do with that. We had a Texan in the White House.

The Texas chili culture was emerging, so was the Austin music scene.

The folklife festival opened in San Antonio. I wanted to capture the spirit, flavor and character of Texas on tape, covering things that were being overlooked.

My program was more than anything an experiment to see if I could make a living doing what I like dong most: reporting on the fun people and places in Texas. The program went statewide in April of 1970. I changed the name

to THE SOUND OF TEXAS and I became Tumbleweed Smith. My middle name is Smith.

August first began my 50th year with the program. I do 260 programs a year. Fifty years worth of programs amounts to 13,000 programs. I feel like I’ve made 13,000 new friends. My company is Orange House Productions.

I was at KHEM looking at a stack of taped programs that came in plain manila envelopes. I thought if I was going to send out programs I would put them in bright colored envelopes, maybe orange, and I would make orange part of the name of the company.

Since the programs were produced at home, Orange House Productions was a perfect name for my company. I have used a lot of orange envelopes.

Muehlstein Recognized for Commitment to Agriculture Education The Vocational Agriculture Teachers Association of Texas (VATAT) held their annual Professional Development conference, July 30-August 3, 2018, in Lubbock, Texas. Agricultural science teachers spent the week attending professional development workshops, training classes and general sessions with motivational speakers to enhance their current teaching methods and keep up with the latest curriculum developments in agricultural education and technology.

Members from across Texas received VATAT awards Tuesday, July 31, at the Lubbock Civic Center.

Tenure awards are a benefit of the

VATAT and are given in five-year increments to members who have dedicated themselves to teaching and supporting agricultural science.

Recipients with 10 years of VATAT tenure are honored with a commemorative award. Curt Muehlstein, Lueders-Avoca AgScience teacher received his 10-year award.

“The VATAT is proud to recognize the achievements of our members and the dedication of our supporters,” said Barney McClure, VATAT Executive Director.

The VATAT is a professional organization for agricultural education teachers and supporters. The Association informs member about the

latest agricultural education practices, encourages higher standards of teaching and provides a unified voice for agriculture education in the state legislature. Celebrating 78 years, the VATA is headquartered in Austin, and its mission is preparing educators to develop 21st Century leaders in agriculture through excellence in education, citizenship, and cooperation.

Live By Faith The Scripture in the second chapter of the book Habakkuk is one of the most foundational Scriptures in the entire canon of the Bible. The Word of God reads, “the righteous shall live by faith” (Hab. 2:4). The New Testament quotes Habakkuk 2:4 three times (Rom. 1:17; Gal. 3:11; Heb. 10:37-38). This verse is viewed by many as the summary of the entire Law or Old Testament teaching. This verse is used in the New Testament as the foundation for defending justification by faith in Christ Jesus the Messiah.

The LORD revealed through the prophet Habakkuk that pride-driven hypocritical religion wouldn’t cut it in His eyes. The people would not become righteous by religious ritualism and ceremony but instead, they were made right by their inward faith. A concept later reaffirmed by Christ when he encouraged the Pharisee to “First wash the inside of the cup, and then the outside will become clean, too” (Matt.

23:26). We must never forget that God looks at the heart (1 Sam 16:7) and it’s our heart that He desires.

Many people during Habakkuk’s day claimed to be righteous by their outward pretense but inside they were not truly in line with Yahweh’s commands. Habakkuk declared that only the truly righteous are the ones who have inward and strong faith in the One True God. The inward pride of the people led them to trust only in their own self-worth.

Pride is the very foundation of sin and the LORD was once again declaring through the prophet Habakkuk that a prideful heart would not end in righteousness. When someone has pride they trust in themselves, but when someone has a humble heart they look beyond themselves for a higher solution. Yahweh is proclaiming a great truth in this verse in Habakkuk; the truth is that humility is the first step of faithfulness. When one humbles himself towards God, he then can have true faith, but until then his pride will always lead him to trust in his own

strength and not God’s. This great “faith formula” given to us by the prophet Habakkuk helps us understand the overall importance of a humble heart towards our LORD and Savior.

In contrast, Paul uses this verse in the New Testament to show that both Jews and Gentiles can become right in God’s eyes by placing their faith in Christ Jesus. Paul claims that by trusting in Jesus’s life, death and resurrection as an atoning substitution for our sin, we are made right in God’s eyes. From beginning to end God justifies us based on our faith alone in His Son’s sacrificial atonement.

When Paul quotes Habakkuk 2:4, he is clearly proclaiming that all people even under the Old Covenant are justified by faith alone. Faith is the only way to be made right in the Lord’s eyes and to be justified before the judge (Rom. 3:28).

Paul goes on to reveal that God’s Grace is an undeserved favor that we have been freely given. Our faith in Jesus is what makes us right in the Lord’s eyes. Because of our faith in Christ, we are called to live holy and obedient lives. We are not to claim that we have faith and then not live out that

faith. For faith is active and true genuine faith in the Messiah can be seen through our everyday actions (Jas. 2:22). We as Christians are not called to be all about show and pretense as the people of Habakkuk’s day, but instead be authentic in our faith towards Jesus the Messiah.

The entire New Covenant focuses on this concept brought up in Habakkuk 2:4. Justification through faith is our absolute only way as sinners to be made right in God’s eyes.

Our works, deeds, or religious ceremony cannot atone for our failures as a sinful human race.

The only way we can be forgiven and justified in full is by the redeeming work of Jesus Christ our King. The Word of God encourages us all to put our faith in the Blood of Christ and we should all do this daily. Live out your faith this week and never forget the sure promise that, “the righteous will live by their faith in God” (Hab. 2:4).

JONES COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORT The Jones County Sheriff’s Office from August 12th thru August 25th responded to 129 calls for service. There were 31 Traffic Stops conducted. 08/17/2018 Deputy Soliz responded to a residential alarm. Calling party stated that a front door indicator was activated. Deputy Soliz made contact with the property owners and determined the alarm was activated accidentaly.

08/20/2018 Deputy Zertuche responded to a suspicious subject call.

Calling party stated that an unknown woman was standing near the roadway in the middle of nowhere. Deputy Zertuche searched the area but was unable to locate the female in the area.

08/22/2018 Deputy Steckly responded to an agency assist call. Calling party stated they needed a civil standby while they made contact with a family in Jones County, Texas. Deputy Steckly met the agency at the location. No incident.

08/25/2018 Deputy Lively responded to a domestic disturbance call.

Calling party stated that an ex was at their residence and refused to leave. Deputy Lively made contact with the calling party but the suspect left prior to his arrival. No report.
