Jones County Fair This Weekend The 59th Annual Jones County Fair will be held September 21-23, 2017 in Anson, Texas. Livestock Division will be held in the Jones County Show Barns, 803 23rd St., Saturday, September 23rd. Livestock entries will consist of Cattle, Sheep and Goat.

You must be a member of the FFA or 4-H organization and be a resident of the State of Texas to enter.

Home & Garden Division will be held at Lawrence Hall Activity Center, 801 23rd St. beginning on Thursday, September 21st with the check

in process. Divisions are Textiles, Preserves, Baked Goods, Antiques and Collectibles, Recycled Home Arts, Horticulture, Special Division, Photography, Art, Grandparents Brag, Educational Exhibits, Hobbies and Crafts. On Saturday, September 23rd, there will be an Ice Cream Contest for all ages to enter. Many activities are planned throughout the duration of the day for all ages.

New Faces and a Fresh Look at Stamford Health Club You may have noticed several new faces at Stamford Health Club recently with the addition of new Manager Diana Sanchez and Certified Personal Trainer Joel DePorte.

Stamford Health Club is also working to enhance services with a new membership system, more classes and continuing to freshen the look of the facility.

Manager Diana Sanchez may be a new face at Stamford Health Club but she has been a part of the community for many years. She is a native of Haskell and graduated from Paint Creek High School. She studied at Cisco College and received certification in Nutrition, Exercise and Fitness from the Professional Career Development Institute.

For the past eight years, Diana has worked for Outreach Health Services in the WIC Program headquartered in Stamford and most recently served as Supervisor for the program.

Correction Janene Powell, former Calvary Baptist member, would like to clear up some nonfactual information printed in September 15, 2017 paper under “God’s Path” by Heather Sutton. As of August 20,2017 Calvary Baptist Church in Stamford went in to a business meeting to decide the future of the church. A motion was carried that Calvary Baptist Church disband as a church. In a time of discussion I, Janene, let the Calvary congregation know that Bobby Acosta had been hosting a church and bible study in their home and was growing and might possible need a bigger place. A motion was made and a second and it carried, that someone from Calvary Baptist Church go and see if Bobby would be interested in taking over Calvary Baptist property for his church. I, Janene, and husband Kenny volunteered to go talk to Bobby. I and my husband Kenny were not the owners of Calvary Baptist Church, we were just simply the messengers of good news. If Bobby wanted the property for his church, it would be gifted to him by Calvary Baptist Church’s congregation as a whole. No debts attached. I just hated to see the church building sit empty when it could still serve a purpose.

Coach and Teacher Missy Dutchover and her children Elise, Haley and Amber Teacher and Coach Missy Dutchover was described as kind, patient, and always wanting to get the best out of the students on the court or in the classroom.

She is from Haskell, and she enjoys playing and watching sports and cooking. She has been teaching for 20 years, four of which have been here in Stamford. She likes the great kids and the great community here in Stamford.

Coach Dutchover is the junior high special education teacher and also coaches girls cross country. She says that her goal as a teacher and coach is to help the kids succeed.

Her proudest moment as a teacher was watching Brooklyn Woodard take the medal stand in Austin. She enjoys playing and watching sports and cooking.

Animal Ordinance Main Topic of Discussion for City Council

BY WILL MCCLURE The Stamford City Council held its regular meeting last Monday evening, September 18th where the council discussed the upcoming tax rate increase as well as listened to concerns from Stamford citizens. With all council members present, Mayor Johnny Anders called the meeting to order and asked Councilmember Ken Roberson to lead the invocation. After leading the room in the Pledge of Allegiance, Anders opened the floor for citizen’s comments, in which three citizens asked to address the council.

First was James Holloway, who expressed his concerns about the city needing to enforce traffic laws more, stating that some roads see people go well over the speed limit or even ignore stop signs. He ended by saying that there were many inconsiderate drivers on the road, so more enforcement of traffic laws was needed. Next was Ron Fishman, who would return later in the meeting to address another matter, he stated that someone near his home on East Oliver Street had been burning horse manure, which is not allowed within the city limits, and has been unable to find out who was doing it. Fishman asked the council to see if

they could find the person burning the manure as well as see if the city could enforce noise laws within the city, citing car owners adding aftermarket mufflers to their vehicles or raising the volume on their stereos to cause a disturbance in the area. Once Fishman has his time for the moment, Sarah Woods was the last to address the council where she asked the council to look at the budget where workers can be hired to help clean up the town, citing the high salaries for two workers that take care of two properties as cause to reallocate funds. When Woods was finished and no other citizen wished to speak at this time, the meeting moved forward with the remainder of the regular agenda.

The council moved to approve the minutes of the September 5th regular meeting and the September 8th special session with no needed corrections or adjustments.

Chamber of Commerce Director Caitlin Richards then addressed the council to request usage of the town square for the annual Fall Festival on Saturday, October 7th. The request included using the grass area around the post office as well as the ability to close off one entrance/ exit, keeping the others open for residents to still access the blue mailbox on

the south side. The council moved to approve Richards’ request and thanked Richards for all of her hard work for the city.

Fishman said that he has a neighbor that owns a rooster that crows from early in the morning to late at night, which Fishman believed was inconsiderate due to owning an animal that makes intermittent noise within a small town such as Stamford and stated that there were several inconsiderate residents in town with roosters.

Fishman asked the council to entertain the idea of outright banning the owning of roosters within the city limits. Councilmember Dennis Braden interjected and stated while Fishman is very much entitled to his opinion and is sorry that he is bothered by the rooster crowing, Braden himself is not bothered by it as Stamford is a rural town and that he himself lived next to two roosters and a mule, stating that Fishman is not speaking for the entire town when

The conversation continued with Police Chief Darwin Huston stating that he had looked into the issue and was working on a resolution where the rooster owner purchased a collar to put on the rooster to keep him from crowing to satisfy Fishman, but ultimately stated that Fishman has made regular complaints about many different things in town.

This fund is made possible because of the donations from people in our community.

Organizations in Stamford who are eligible are invited to mail in a letter to serve as an application to receive funds from The Stamford Community United Fund. Each letter must be from an organization that promotes the economic development and well-being of neighborhoods and/or supports the learning and developmental needs of children and youth in Stamford and/or helps the elderly and/or the underprivileged in Stamford. The application letter must be postmarked by October 6, 2017 to P.O. Box 1, Stamford, Texas 79553. The letter must explain in detail what your organization does and what the funds will be used for. Each letter must be signed and dated. A submitted application does not guarantee funds. The board will make the final decision on who receives the money and the amount of money that each organization will receive based on their needs. After each application has been reviewed and the decision has been made, the organization will then receive a letter on whether or not their organization will be receiving money.

Melvin Rosenquist

Darryl Glen Schoonmaker passed away Tuesday, September 12, 2017 in Aspermont, Texas at the age of 77. Memorial Services were held Saturday, September 16th at 1:00 p.m. at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl with Rev. Richard Strait officiating. Burial followed in the Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.

Darryl was born October 30, 1939 to John Berthal and Dorothy Strand Schoonmaker, at the Stamford Sanitarium. He attended school in Stamford, lettering in basketball and football, playing on Coach Gordon Wood’s State Championship teams in 1955 and 1956. He graduated from Stamford High School in 1957, attended Tarleton State College for 2 years, and received a Bachelor of Science degree from Texas Tech University in 1962. After graduation, he began assisting his dad and uncle on the family farm east of Stamford. He served as the Member Services Director of Stamford Electric Co-op in the early 1970’s and then as General Manager of the Stamford Grain Coop for several years. He served as the Chairman of the Sponsor’s Barrel Racing Contest of the Texas Cowboy Reunion for many years.

On June 23, 1962, he married Jayne Truett in San Antonio, Texas. To this union three children were born: Lori, Melanie and Greg. He was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl, Texas, where he served on the church council. Later in life he married Mickey Gibbs.

He was preceded in death by his parents, J.B. and Dorothy Schoonmaker.

Darryl is survived by his wife Mickey of the home; his children, Lori Schoonmaker of Tulsa, OK, Melanie Shannon of Bristow, OK and Greg Schoonmaker (Cheryl) of Copper Canyon, TX; grandchildren, Christopher Schoonmaker, Hanna and Hope Schoonmaker, and Jackson Apple; brother, John “Haby” Schoonmaker (Jane); sisters, Linda Eastep (Guy) and Sharon Bolin (Buddy); numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Tarleton State University Alumni Association (Memorial Fund), Box T-0260, Stephenville, TX 76402, which will be used for student scholarships.

The Schoonmaker Family will be hosting a Dove Hunt in Darryl’s memory, Saturday Morning, September 16th.

We will meet at the Tankersley Funeral Home (807 S. Columbia) parking lot, and will be leaving at 7:15 a.m. to go on the hunt. Everyone is welcome!

Melvin Rosenquist, 90, of the Ericksdahl community in Avoca, TX, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 16th at home surrounded by his family. He was born September 10, 1927 in Stamford, TX to Eric and Martha Rosenquist. He served his country in the Army during WWII, and attended Texas Lutheran College. After returning to Stamford, he met and married Nell Thompson. They raised their three children, Taimi, Russ and Paul, on the family farm. Melvin was a life-long member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Ericksdahl and a faithful servant.

After retiring from farming, he enjoyed traveling in their motor home and wintering in The Valley. He and Nell loved square and round dancing and fellowship with numerous friends across the country. He also loved a good game of Social Security with his grandkids and Dominoes. Melvin had a kind heart and a competitive nature when it came to playing games or his favorite football teams! He was a wonderful husband, father, father-in-law, Papa Mel and friend, and will be dearly missed.

He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Nell; daughter Taimi Wendeborn and husband John of Stamford, TX; son Russ Rosenquist and wife Dawn of Plano, TX; son Paul Rosenquist of Ericksdahl, TX; grandchildren Adria Martinez and husband Michael, Jacob Wendeborn and wife Marni, Kyle Rosenquist and wife Jacqueline, Blair Schrodel and husband Matthew; great grandchildren Ace and Cy Martinez; sister Becky Nauert and husband Leland and numerous nieces and nephews in the Nauert and Haterius families. He will be greeted in heaven by his sister Marjorie Haterius, brother-in-law Birger, and his parents. Melvin’s family wishes to thank Cathy Jo Pender and Brenda Griggs for the gentle and loving care given to him these past few months, and to Hendrick Hospice for caring for him in his final days. They are also grateful for the cards, meals and support from neighbors and the Bethel community.

Pall bearers will be Michael Martinez, Jacob Wendeborn, Kyle Rosenquist, Matthew Schrodel, Robert Mullins and Fred Padron. Honorary Pallbearers will be David Ballard, Kenny Buerger and Mark Lundgren.

The family gathered for visitation at Tankersley Funeral Home, 807 S. Columbia in Stamford, TX on Tuesday, September 19th from 5:30-7:00 p.m. A celebration of his life was held Wednesday, September 20th, at 1:00 p.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church, 10625 N FM Rd. 600 Avoca, TX 79503 with Rev. Richard Strait officiating. Burial followed in the Bethel Lutheran Church Cemetery. Services were under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home.

Because family was important to Melvin, in lieu of flowers, please share a meal with your family and enjoy the time you have together. If desired, memorial gifts may be made to Bethel Lutheran or the charity of your choice.

September is going fast and we are in need of a good rain.

The clouds around looked good yesterday (Saturday) and some folks may have gotten a light shower, but we need that good Fall rain. Maybe this week.????

Coffee Shop talk is football and more football. All the teams are going strong and school days are going well. Most of the schools are into volleyball and the young ladies are doing well.

The West Texas Fair has come and gone again for another year. Senior Day always has lot of folks that go and enjoy the entertainers on stage and the rodeo. It did not rain and the weather was not too bad.

Mittie Dunham met fourteen ladies at the Central Baptist Church in Aspermont on Monday evening for Ladies Fellowship. It was a great evening.

Pide Dunham joined Lowell Rash and Larry Deal of Aspermont at the Gibson Care Center in Aspermont and played music for the residents and visitors.

Mittie helped make sandwiches for Youth Night at the Central Baptist Church.

Bernice Rhoads returned home late last Sunday from Kilgore were she visited with her son and wife, Tom Lee and Angie Rhoads. On her way back home she went to Terrell and had dinner with her two grandchildren, Adam Rhoads and Sarah Rhoads. Adam and Sarah are both teachers in that area.

Linda Letz and daughter, Karen, of Abilene and Lacey New of Abilene joined her mother, Carm Letz and they all enjoyed a Mother-Daughter week end in Fredericksburg. They returned home late on Sunday.

The Multi County Retired Teachers and School Personnel met at the First United Methodist Church in Anson instead of Hamlin due to a funeral in Hamlin. There were thirty five members and guests in attendance to enjoy a delicious meal. Mr. Roger Huber of the State Legislative Committee of District XIV spoke to the group about the change in the health program. He stated for everyone to stay in touch with all representatives and senators and let them know our needs. Also to be sure and vote in the primary.

All retirees should be a member of the TRTS as numbers do count. Mr. Huber gave hand out material to each one and talked about the issues that was on the hand outs. We appreciate Mr. Huber bringing us up to date on the health care program and other issues.

Following Mr. Huber’s talk, President, Dorothy Watkins, called the meeting to order and welcomed everyone. She told members of a meeting in Abilene on Thursday, Sept 21, that everyone may want to attend. She also gave some corrections for the year books. Anita Dozier read the minutes and Betty Wood gave the treasurer’s report. Mr. Shelby invited the group to the Pink Ladies Jewelry Sale at the Stamford Hospital and spoke briefly on the Fair Tax. The Church pastor invited everyone to come to a concert the church will be having.

Dorothy informed everyone that the next meeting will be at the Hawley Church of Christ on Wednesday, November 8, at 11:30 A M. Elizabeth Womack won the door prize.

Our Senior Citizens Dance at the Old Glory Community on Thursday evening was well at-

tended and everyone had a great time with lots of good music and delicious refreshments.

Thanks to the ladies for all the good food they brought and thanks to everyone that came out to support our Center. The next dance will be on Thursday, October 12 from 7 P M until 10 P M. Sue Callicoatte of Abilene spent Tuesday with her aunt and uncle, Helen and Glen Pierce.

On Saturday the following family members came to visit with Glen and Helen Pierce and enjoyed lunch and a big birthday cake honoring Kelly Lowack on her 13th birthday. Present were Wayne and Kara Briggs and Crete from Haskell, Matthew Pierce from Lubbock, Wes and Tracy Pierce and Kambryn from Nocona and Kim Lowack and Kelly of OG. Wes and Kambryn enjoyed going dove hunting following the birthday celebration.

I really enjoyed having daughter, Marcie, from Hamby and granddaughter and great-granddaughter, Amanda Kern and Adalyn from Granbury spent Saturday afternoon with me.

I talked with Phyllis Letz and she said that she has checked on all her relatives and friends that were or might have been in the hurricanes and that all is well with them. Phyllis stated that she is feeling much better now and thanks everyone for their prayers and concerns.

The Haskell County Advisory Committee for Noah Project, a center of care for victims of domestic violence and sexual assault, recently met with their new Executive Director, Dan Cox, to finalize the plans for their annual Taste of Country fundraiser held on Tuesday, September 19, at the Haskell Civic Center. Janis Brzozowski (second from the back) is Noah Project’s full time crisis advocate located in the courthouse in Haskell, serving Haskell, Stonewall, Throckmorton, Knox and northern Jones County. CITY: Continued From Page 3 Fishman responded with that he had been complaining to his officers for two years about smoke among other items, but Anders interrupted him and stated that they were not getting anywhere with the issue, with Councilmember Roberson agreeing by stating that Fishman could take the issues privately to Huston’s office or to City Hall. After addressing the council for a few more minutes, Fishman announced that he had decided that he would no longer stay in Stamford, saying that it is perfectly reasonable to not breathe smoke or listen to roosters all day long. Ultimately, the council denied Fishman’s request to ban roosters in town, and Fishman thanked the council for their time in the matter.

The council then moved forward with the second reading and approval of Ordinance 906, which will raise the

tax rate for the 2017-2018 fiscal year by 3%. The council then unanimously approved the consent agenda which included a lake lot lease transfer and subsequent new lake lot lease before Plumlee presented his City Manager’s Report. Plumlee began by stating that the road work on the road to the Stamford Lake Marina had been completed and other projects were being worked on while he himself had been out at the lake since 10:00 am that morning to get the raw water pump back up and running that has been having issues recently. Next, Plumlee stated that he had attended a meeting of the Council of Governments about the VIP program where several changes are on the horizon, but the Stamford program was still solid. Plumlee continued by stating that a company will be installing cell phone enhancement poles in town to

help reception, from which the city will receive at least $250 a year. Plumlee said that he had been working with the company to try and receive a percentage instead much like the agreements with other companies in town, but this company received state legislation to only offer the yearly stipend. Plumlee said that he would have the contract for the council to approve at the next meeting. Plumlee concluded his report by stating the water development project has officially moved from the planning phase to the design phase and that the city had purchased two new Ford trucks for the water treatment department and the parks and streets department.

With Plumlee’s report completed and no other business to attend to, the council adjourned for the evening at 5:52 pm.

Bulldogs Pull Away In Second Half To Defeat Badgers, 39-20

BY JENNIFER CRAIG If you showed up five minutes late to Bill Anderson Stadium Friday night, you would have already missed out on big scoring plays by each of the two competing teams – the Stamford Bulldogs and the Merkel Badgers. The Badgers got on the scoreboard first when a pass from Peyton Bevel to Steven Johnson was popped free into the air and Johnathan Maples returned the fumble into the end zone for the first score of the night with just 15 seconds gone. The kick failed so the Badgers held a 6-0 lead, their only lead of the night. The Bulldogs got on the board five plays later when

Bevel found RJ Smith, and Smith raced 62 yards for a touchdown.

Caden Mathis kicked the extra point so the Bulldogs were on top 7-6 with 10:20 left in the first quarter.

Merkel took the ensuing pooch kick and used the strong running of senior running back Brady Bilbrey and QB Cole Wilkerson to move to a first down at the Stamford 20. After a two yard gain by Balus Holden, Wilkerson threw two incompletions thanks in large part to the pressure being applied by Timothy Chambers. Wilkerson kept the ball on fourth down but the Bulldog defense stopped him short to end the 14 play drive at the Stamford 15.

Johnson gave the Dogs some

breathing room with a ten yard gain and Bevel added another 20 on a quarterback keeper. Stamford moved into Merkel territory with a 25 yard pass from Bevel to Lonnie Applin.

Johnson covered the remaining 30 yards for a touchdown on the next play. Mathis again added the PAT to push the score to 14-6 in favor of the Bulldogs.

A short punt by the Badgers gave the Dogs the ball in Merkel territory. The drive stalled after a third down pass was dropped. Noah Horn tucked the ball and ran on fourth down; but he came up just short so the ball went over on downs.

Bulldogs Pull Away In Second Half To Defeat Badgers, 39-20 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7 Merkel scored again quickly when Wilkerson found Jonah White who made a one handed catch and scampered into the end zone. The Badgers used a fake kick to pass for the two extra points to tie the score at 14.

Following an exchange of punts, the Bulldogs started a grind it out drive from their own 22. Ethan Medina caught passes of 17 and ten yards to help move the Dogs into Badger territory.

Bevel had run down to the 18 but a holding call pushed the ball back to the Merkel 40 just before Medina’s second catch.

Bevel added a 20 yard jaunt to the Badger seven.

Johnson scored on the next play but a holding penalty called it back and the ball moved to the 15. Bevel was flagged for intentional grounding on the next play so the ball moved to the 25 with loss of down. Johnson took a pass from Bevel and appeared to score; but again a flag wiped out the play – this time for an illegal block. Two incomplete passes left the Dogs facing fourth and goal from the 27. Bevel tried to find Applin but this time the penalty flag went in favor of Stamford with Merkel being charged with pass interference. Johnson and Bevel shared the running duties with Johnson taking the football into the end zone for the touchdown on his third trip of the drive.

score at 20-14.

White made another one handed catch to open Merkel’s next drive and pushed the ball to the Stamford 22. Jakob Dearing converted a third down with a 15 yard catch to set up the Badgers at the Bulldog three. Two incompletions, a penalty and a short gain left the Badgers facing fourth and goal from the six yard line with under a minute left in the half. Wilkerson looked into the end zone but found RJ Smith instead of any Badger to turn the football back to the Bulldogs.

Bevell found Medina and Trace Edwards with passes then he kept for 17 yards with time for one last play. Johnson got the pass at midfield and raced down the sideline before finally being pushed out of bounds at the Merkel eight to end the first half on an exciting note.

Merkel got the second half kickoff but didn’t keep the football for long. On the second play Tre Mitchell picked off a Wilkerson pass and returned the interception 65 yards for a Stamford score. Smith added the extra point to move the score to 27-14 in the Bulldogs’ favor.

Holden gave the Badgers good starting position after a nice kickoff return.

Merkel mostly kept the ball on the ground with White, Holden, Wilkerson and Bilbrey all getting touches; they moved the ball to the Stamford 13. Wilkerson was hit for a loss on first down

and the Badgers were ticketed for an illegal block on the next play to move the ball back to the 28. Wilkerson kept up the middle for a gain on nine but pulled up with cramps at the end of the play. White stepped in at quarterback; his third down pass was no good and his fourth down run was stopped short of the line.

The Bulldogs took over on their own ten yard line.

Bevel kept for nine yards and Johnson went up the middle for ten more. A pass to Medina was good to move the ball out to the 40, but a hush fell on the crowd when those attending an injured Horn immediately signaled for the EMTs to bring the stretcher.

The entire time medical personnel were working on the senior Bulldog you could have heard a pin drop in the stadium. That was true on both sides of the stadium with the visitors from Merkel showing the sportsmanship that is a credit to all Badger fans.

When play resumed, Johnson got the call for a five yard gain. Applin moved the ball into Badger territory with a 15 yard catch. Two plays later Applin carried the ball 40 yards into the Merkel end zone with a catch and run down the Merkel sideline.

Bevel picked up a low snap and ran for what appeared to be a two point conversion. However, the Bulldogs were penalized on the play with the ball being moved back five yards. Bevel again kept the ball; this time his run for two points was good to push the score to 33-14.

Merkel opened their next drive with a bang as White broke for 38 yards on a screen pass from Wilkerson. Bilbrey converted a third and nine with a 20 yard bullish run to the Stamford ten. Runs by Bilbrey and Wilkerson moved the football to the Stamford three with fourth down

looming. Bilbrey fought his way for those final yards to score for the Badgers. Wilkerson was stopped short on his attempt for a two point conversion.

Johnson worked through would be tacklers then started racing on a 34 yard gainer to open the Bulldog drive. Mitchell was stopped for a short loss and two passes fell incomplete to leave the Dogs facing fourth and eleven from the Merkel 32. Bevel found Applin at about the 17; Applin made the catch and ran into the end zone to complete the 32 yard play. Stamford’s two point conversion failed but the score stood at 39-20 in the Bulldogs favor.

A missed handoff started the Badgers next drive but Wilkerson made the recovery. On the next play Johnson intercepted a Merkel pass but the pick was cancelled out by a roughing the passer penalty. Two rushes by Bilbrey pushed the ball to the Stamford 25 with a first down. Wilkerson dropped back with a host of Bulldog defenders giving chase. Wilkerson fumbled and Applin was there to recover for Stamford.

Penalties and the loss created by a low snap pushed the Bulldogs deep into their territory. A fourth down run by Bevel was short so Merkel took over in great field position at the Stamford 26. Bilbrey got the call four times to move the ball to the Stamford one. An illegal procedure penalty on fourth down pushed the Badgers back to the six.

Wilkerson called his own number but was stopped short in what is becoming a trademark of the Bulldog defense.

Bevel broke free on first down but was called for a face mask penalty in one of the rare times a ball carrier is called for that infraction.

The Dogs couldn’t move so Bevel punted from the end zone; the kick was good for 41 yards.

A fourth down stop led to the victory formation by the Bulldogs as they put the finishing touch to a 39-20 victory.

The Bulldogs now stand at 2-1 for the year; each team in District 4-2A Division I has that identical mark. The Dogs will travel to Haskell Friday night to face a 1-2 Indian squad.

County Budget Proposal Could Eliminate Jobs

BY TERESA BARBIAN The Jones County Commissioners met on Monday, September 11, 2017 for their regularly scheduled meeting and again on Monday, September 18, 2017 for a called meeting. Before both meetings were called to order, a public hearing on the proposed 2017 tax rate was held. There was no public comment from anyone. The proposed maintenance 2017 tax rate is .660312 which is a .049393 rate increase from the previous year. The called meeting on the 18th also discussed the proposed 2018 budget. The Commissioners have a tough decision to make regarding the proposed budget.

Due to the necessity of additional jail staff that is needed, the Commissioners are weighing options on the elimination of a position at the courthouse. Department heads, Steve Estes and Cheryl Guernsey spoke to the Commissioners and have agreed that if the new

budget cuts a part-time position from the extension office, they have agreed to share an employee between the two offices.

The Commissioners are also considering eliminating the full-time position from the extension office.

James Clawson, Precinct 1 Commissioner, even asked if anyone had any other solutions to presenting a proposed balanced budget that would not include eliminating any positions.

On September 25, 2017 there will be a public hearing on the proposed 2018 budget at 9:00 am and then the Court will proceed with voting on the budget. They will also be voting on the proposed 2017 tax rate.

Motions were made to approve the following; all trust property bids, the deputation of Heather Sutton as a limited service Deputy Clerk for vehicle registration renewal duties only, a new vendor bid from Salado (formerly Lueders Limestone) of $8.50/ ton, draw request #7 from

Hawley water improvements construction costs in the amount of $48,681.90, equipment purchase, bids for surplus property, a burn ban for Jones County, the Treasurer’s report, and line item transfers.

The Commissioners also PUBLIC NOTICE Brief Explanatory Statements of Proposed Constitutional Amendments Special Election, November 7, 2017 Proposition Number 1 (HJR 21) HJR 21 proposes a constitutional amendment that would permit the Texas legislature to expand the circumstances under which a partially disabled veteran or their spouse may qualify for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of part of the market value of the veteran’s residence homestead. Currently, the Texas legislature may provide that a partially disabled veteran or their spouse is entitled to an exemption from ad valorem taxation of a percentage of the market value of the disabled veteran’s residence homestead only if the residence homestead was donated to the disabled veteran by a charitable organization at no cost to the veteran.

The amendment would allow the Texas legislature to provide that the exemption also may be taken when the residence homestead was donated, sold, or transferred to the disabled veteran by a charitable organization for less than the market value of the residence homestead.

The amendment also harmonizes certain related provisions of the Texas Constitution.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to provide for an exemption from ad valorem taxation of part of the market value of the residence homestead of a partially disabled veteran or the surviving spouse of a partially disabled veteran if the residence homestead was donated to the disabled veteran by a charitable organization for less than the market value of the residence homestead and harmonizing certain related provisions of the Texas Constitution.”

Proposition Number 2 (SJR 60) SJR 60 proposes a constitutional amendment to require that certain conditions be met for the refinancing of a home equity loan to be secured by a voluntary lien on a homestead. The amendment also would: redefine what is excluded in the calculation of the cap on fees associated with a home equity

discussed the request for a new dishwasher at the jail. The Court approved the purchase and installation of a new dishwasher in the amount of $8,856.55.

Finally, the Commissioners approved an internet service contract with 20 loan, lower the cap from 3% to 2% of the original principal amount of the extension of credit, and specify that such fees are in addition to any bona fide discount points used to buy down the interest rate. The amendment would further specify the list of authorized lenders to make home equity loans, change the threshold for an advance of a home equity line of credit, allow agricultural property owners to acquire home equity loans, and update technical terminology in the Texas Constitution. The amendment would be effective on January 1, 2018, and applicable only to a home equity loan made or refinanced on or after that date.

The proposed amendment would appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment to establish a lower amount for expenses that can be charged to a borrower and removing certain financing expense limitations for a home equity loan, establishing certain authorized lenders to make a home equity loan, changing certain options for the refinancing of home equity loans, changing the threshold for an advance of a home equity line of credit, and allowing home equity loans on agricultural homesteads.”

Proposition Number 3 (SJR 34) SJR 34 proposes a constitutional amendment that would prevent certain office holders from serving indefinitely beyond the expiration of their term. Office holders who are appointed by the Governor and confirmed by the Senate and receive no salary would only be able to serve until the last day of the first regular session of the Texas legislature that begins after their term expires.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment limiting the service of certain officeholders appointed by the governor and confirmed by the senate after the expiration of the person’s term of office.”

Proposition Number 4 (SJR 6) SJR 6 proposes a constitutional amendment that would allow the Texas legislature to require any court that is hearing a challenge to the constitutionality of a state

This new speed will allow the jail to video conference certain court proceedings without having to transport the inmates. It will also allow the statute to notify the attorney general of that challenge, if the party raising the challenge notifies the court that the party is challenging the constitutionality of such statute. Additionally, the amendment would allow the Texas legislature to set a period of not more than 45 days following the notification to the attorney general that the court must wait before rendering a judgment that a state statute is unconstitutional.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment authorizing the legislature to require a court to provide notice to the attorney general of a challenge to the constitutionality of a state statute and authorizing the legislature to prescribe a waiting period before the court may enter a judgment holding the statute unconstitutional.”

Proposition Number 5 (HJR 100) HJR 100 proposes a constitutional amendment to provide a more detailed definition of “professional sports team” for purposes of their charitable foundations, which the Texas legislature may permit to hold charitable raffles. The amendment also deletes a requirement that an eligible professional sports team charitable foundation permitted by the Texas legislature to hold charitable raffles had to be in existence on January 1, 2016.

The proposed amendment will appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment on professional sports team charitable foundations conducting charitable raffles.”

Proposition Number 6 (SJR 1) SJR 1 proposes a constitutional amendment that would allow the Texas legislature by general law to provide that a surviving spouse of a first responder who is killed or fatally injured in the line of duty is entitled to receive an exemption from ad valorem taxation from all or part of the market value on the surviving spouse’s residence homestead, as long as the surviving spouse has not remarried since the death of the first responder. It would also allow the Texas legislature to provide that the surviving spouse, who qualifies and receives the exemption and then qualifies a

jail to provide the inmates mental health access (via video conferencing) without transporting them to another location now that the State has mandated this service.

Proposition Number 7 (HJR 37) HJR 37 proposes a constitutional amendment that would allow the Texas legislature to make an exception to the law regarding the award of certain prizes. Currently, the Texas Constitution requires the Texas legislature to pass laws prohibiting lotteries, raffles, and other programs where the award of gifts is based on luck or chance.

The proposed amendment would make an exception to this general rule to allow the Texas legislature to authorize credit unions and other financial institutions to institute programs which, in order to encourage savings, would award prizes based on luck or chance to the credit union’s or financial institution’s customers.

The proposed amendment would appear on the ballot as follows: “The constitutional amendment relating to legislative authority to permit credit unions and other financial institutions to award prizes by lot to promote savings.”

There Are Treatment Options For Diabetic Neuropathy

DEAR DR. ROACH: What are the treatment options for diabetic neuropathy?

What is likely to happen over time to someone with this condition? -- M.P. ANSWER: Diabetic neuropathy is a condition of nerve damage associated with diabetes, both Type 1 and Type 2.

It affects the long nerves of the body earliest, especially those to the feet, causing numbness and sometimes pain. The hands also may be affected. Usually, both sides are affected the same way. Numbness usually is the first sign, followed by pain, often described as burning or tingling. The nerves to the gut can be affected, leading to constipation and bloating. The best way of dealing with diabetic neuropathy is to not get it in the first place. Excellent control of diabetes, with near-normal sugar levels, was shown to reduce the incidence of people with diabetes developing the condition. In people who already have diabetic neuropathy, good control of blood sugar can improve symptoms and slow progression, but the condition usually is not reversible in people who have established symptoms. However, the pain sometimes can go away mysteriously.

Numbness to the feet puts individuals at risk for injury, as the affected person does not realize he or she is beginning to develop a problem, such as a sore or abrasion. People with diabetic neuropathy need to inspect their feet daily for warning signs, such as dry, cracking skin, redness or drainage, especially between the toes and around the nails. This should be combined with regular professional foot care by a diabetes doctor or foot specialist. For people with pain due to diabetic neuropathy, there are several treatment options. Medication treatments include anti-epilepsy drugs, like gabapentin (Neurontin) and pregabalin (Lyrica); antidepressant drugs, like amitriptyline or venlafaxine (Effexor); anesthetic agents, like lidocaine; and topical agents, like capsaicin. I have been asked recently on my Facebook page (facebook.com/ keithroachmd) about using cannibinoids (marijuana extracts) as a topical treatment for painful neuropathy. I found one paper in German that showed promise, and have heard several anecdotal stories of success, but it is too early for me to recommend it for clinical use.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I was diagnosed with celiac disease eight years ago, after a camera study showed that my small intestine was abnormal. It was confirmed by a blood test for antibodies. Can you get over celiac disease after a period of time?

By Dr Keith Roach, M.D. -- A.M. ANSWER: Celiac disease is caused by a sensitivity to gliadin, a protein found in gluten, which is a component in wheat, rye and barley. The primary affected organ is the small intestine, and the villi (microscopic projections greatly increasing the absorptive area of the intestine, whose job is to absorb nutrients) become flattened, leading to inability to absorb food properly. This can lead to weight loss, diarrhea and other symptoms.

People who are meticulous about following a gluten-free diet can have complete resolution of all of their symptoms, and the small intestine will look and act as it should. Even the blood antibody tests usually become normal. However, the sensitivity to gluten remains, and if people resume eating gluten, the symptoms of the condition will rapidly return. Maintaining a gluten-free diet perfectly is hard.

A Marathon In Marathon The town of Marathon has had a marathon race since 2003.

“We run a full marathon, a half marathon, a 10k and a 5k,” says Marci Roberts, who is in charge of the race.

“We bus all of our racers from Marathon north on Highway 385 and let them off at different starting points along the way. They all have one finish line and it’s right here in the heart of Marathon.”

Since Marci took over the race a couple of years ago, the number of participants has increased. Registration is underway now.

“The race takes place on October 21st this year. It’s on a Saturday. If you go to marathon2marathon.net you’ll get all the information you need and you can register right there.”

In the past, the race attracted runners mostly from major Texas cities.

“Then we started getting runners from out of state and now we’re getting them from out of the country.

This is a Boston Marathon qualifier.”

Registration is 95, 75, 45 and 35 dollars respectively.

Proceeds go to Marathon schools, churches, the library and fire department.

“This is not the typical race you find in a big city where your contribution isn’t really felt. Here it is hugely felt. The whole town comes out for it. It’s the biggest event we have.

It’s a very heartfelt, sweet race because we only have 430 people living in town.

We have a hundred volunteers for the race. We had 502 registrations last year.”

Participants get a t-shirt.

Finishers get a medal on a ribbon and winners get special awards. The race is downhill and runners end up at a lower altitude.

“Marathon can’t hold all

the participants. They stay in Alpine or Fort Stockton, some as far away as Fort Davis or Marfa.”

If you haven’t been to Marathon, you will find it an interesting place. Several people from Austin and other places have found it a pleasant place to live. The cost of living is reasonable, the scenery is outstanding since it’s the gateway to the Big Bend National Park and the weather is near perfect.

“Well I’m a registered architect and interior designer, so that’s what I have done my whole life and am very passionate about it.

I worked at architectural firms in Connecticut, New York City and Austin, then had my own business in Austin. I kinda got burned out and ended up moving here.”

CLUB: Continued From Page 1 Diana is currently enrolled to earn accreditation as a Certified Personal Trainer. She is married to John, who works for Big Country Electric and they have one son, Dallas, who is in second grade at Oliver Elementary School.

Diana is passionate about fitness and nutrition and believes results happen over time not overnight. She encourages members to work hard, stay consistent and be patient. She is enjoying working with members and is working on additional enhancements to the health club as well as rolling out a new fitness program.

“I am proud to be at Stamford Health Club and I am excited to help members of our community to get fit and improve their health,” said Sanchez. “We are currently offering several great classes including Silver Fitness and Ripped and we have some really exciting things to come.”

Joel grew up in California and came to Texas to attend McMurry University where he also played and coached baseball. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in kinesiology in 2014 and has worked in sales and management for GNC for two years.

In addition to training, he coaches select baseball.

“My goal is to help people feel better, get happy and gain confidence,” said Joel. “I believe if you feel confident, you can conquer the world.”

Don’t Burn Your Bridges There is an old saying that has always been thrown around and that is “do not burn your bridges.” We’ve used that phrase a lot and it is commonly understood as maintaining good relationships with others.

You hear this more often with people leaving jobs or even in professional sports when players known for a certain team Will McClure suddenly decide to leave (see LeBron James, Josh Hamilton and, most recently, Kevin Durant) and results in a lot of backlash and ill feelings. When it comes to leaving a job, some take to complaining about the job or even spreading hateful speech towards a former employer for some reason or another, resulting in figuratively “burning that bridge.” Sometimes this can even be extended to friendships when one person cannot help the other in some fashion, resulting in the other severing all ties. It is a hurtful process to burn one’s bridges and can make one feel better at the time, especially if they had a negative experience, but it can ultimately have a damaging effect down the line.

Burning bridges is never a good idea no matter how you’re feeling. Yes, we can be upset about something and even complain, I do it all of the time myself though I’m trying to get better about it, but there is definitely a line that should not be crossed. It’s one thing to simply complain for a week and then move on, but it’s quite another if you decide to keep pushing it forward and making a bigger deal about something that your friend or even former employer has already forgotten about.

There are a lot of people that have this mindset of just moving on so that if a favor is needed or if you are considering returning to the job, they are willing to listen.

However, burning the bridge can ruin that relationship and can even spread to others.

All I am saying through all of this rambling that there is a time and a place for ill feelings or even a complaint or two, but is it really worth it to keep pushing things forward to an irreversible point? I mentioned a few athletes earlier that were good examples of burning bridges that I would like to refer to again now: LeBron James left Cleveland for Miami amidst a big uproar after he had previously stated that he wanted to stay in Cleveland, but left to try and win a championship. Many did not want him back and his ego seemed like it would keep him away, but instead of burning a bridge, feelings subsided and he eventually came back. The same is true with Josh Hamilton when he left the Rangers and even spoke ill of the fans, leading to a lot of hard feelings, but he still repaired the relationship and came back, albeit briefly. These two found a way to not completely burn a bridge to return, and the same goes for everyday life.

No one wants to harbor any hard feelings and wants to maintain a good personal relationship, even if things do not return to the same as they were before. After all, isn’t it better to act civil rather than trying to spread hard feelings?

HELLO FROM COWBOY COUNTRY

By Lucile Wedeking Had a great weekend doing some R&D for the museum, attending the Bosque Art Classic, on September 9th. I was gifted tickets by one of the competing artists, Jason Lohmeier of Arizona. Jason is a real up and comer in the Western art scene, and his painting “Blue,” is one of my favorites I’ve seen all year.

He has quickly become one of my favorite emerging Western artists (and now friend), and we had a good time visiting before and during the show.

While Jason did not take home the big prize this year, another great artist Herman Walker did. I am so proud to say, thanks to the foresight of the Stamford Art Foundation, we have one of his paintings already hanging in the museum’s permanent art collection.

Y’all come by and see it if you haven’t already, we really have some wonderful Western art in here!

While the event was inspiring on many levels, seeing the show and the great facilities the Bosque Art Center has, it was really great meeting some of the

artists whose work I have come to admire over the years.

I visited with cowgirl artist Valerie Coe, who is an award-winning cowboy boot maker, watercolor artist, and rancher. She and her husband, Ned, raise Angus Cattle in California.

We ran into each other before the event at Clifton’s Classic Car Museum, and I knew her at once when we exchanged introductions. Artists are sort of like authors, I guess, you don’t always know their faces, but you do recognize the name! What a fortunate run it! Our vintage car talk instantly turned toward art and her travels all over the country showing her beautiful watercolors.

At the show itself, I was seated for dinner across from artist Geri Dunn, who is also from California, and grew up in the neighboring community of Santa Ynes Valley, just over the hill from Santa Barbara, where I was raised. Geri works with graphite (pencil) and oil paints, and like me, has also made her home in Texas. We talked about Los

Rancheros Vistadores, a grand old cowboy club social club where Ronald Reagan used to go on trail rides, and exchanged stories of our own experiences visiting their clubhouse in our younger days.

I was really excited to meet Joel Edwards, who lives just outside Waco.

Joel had another one of my favorite paintings there, a beautiful Western landscape watercolor of the Window at Big Bend. Happy to see Joel take home a prize for his work that night, it was truly outstanding!

Perhaps the luckiest moment of the night was visiting with the show’s judge, artist Teal Blake. Teal is one of the younger members of the Cowboy Artists of America, a phenomenal artist known for his watercolors, but he also works brilliantly in oils and bronze. He will be showing at one of the most significant events in the world of fine art, Western or otherwise, at the legendary Cowboy Artist of America show “Cowboy Crossings,” at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City, this coming October.

Now, the coolest thing about this trip, besides getting to meet and visit with these outstanding artists, was

“Blue” by artist Jason Lohmeier, shown at the Bosque Art Classic, in Clifton, TX. that every single one of them had heard of Stamford as a cowboy town, knew of the TCR Rodeo or the Stamford Art Foundation, and expressed interest in coming here and doing something with us!

FRIENDS: continued From Page 1 The Stamford First Baptist Church has started the First Friends After School Program, an affordable state licensed after school program for the community’s children. First Friends is a faith-based program that follows a daily schedule for the children after school.

Upon arrival after school, they wash their hands and sit down for a prayer and a snack, then get asked about how their day was. Then they have a small devotional with a life lesson and discuss how these certain situations make them feel and how they should and shouldn’t react. Then, teacher Yolanda Martinez and Program Director Angie Wilson help the children complete their homework before arts and crafts/coloring time.

Currently the program has only about 10 children and is open every school day Monday thru Friday from about 3:30 pm when school lets out till 5:30, and is open to students from Pre-K to 5th grade.

The kids are dropped off by the school bus daily. For now the program follows the school calendar year which means that when school lets out early, they will open the after school program early. But when school is out or on weekends, the program is closed.

The program costs about 7 dollars per school day, and you do have to pay the month upfront, with October’s monthly rate being $147.00.

The First Baptist Church also provides a Mother’s Day Out Program, where

they take care of younger children to give moms a much needed break. The times are every Tuesday and Thursday from 9am to 2:30pm unless otherwise specified. Tuition is 20 dollars a day, and the whole month must be paid up front. Walk ins are welcomed for 25 dollars. Both programs are open to the public.

This is such a great service for the Stamford community to have available.
