Dogs Batter Record Book On Way To 90-62 Victory Over DeLeon

BY JENNIFER CRAIG The Stamford Bulldogs and DeLeon Bearcats battled to the wire Friday night in Bill Anderson Stadium and posted scores and statistics normally seen only in six man games. The final scoreboard read Stamford 90, DeLeon 62 as the three and a half hour game came to an end.

On the way to the win Stamford’s senior quarterback Peyton Bevel broke two state records. Bevel tossed twelve touchdown passes and accounted for 789 passing

yards. The dozen TDs were evenly spread among Zach Duran, Trace Edwards, Tre Mitchell and RJ Smith. The receivers also posted gaudy numbers in terms of receiving yards. Mitchell led with 307 yards on eight catches; Edwards had 193 yards on four catches; Smith caught five passes for 52 yards. Duran only had three catches but they were good for 205 yards to go with the three touchdowns. Kaleb Flick also contributed to the stat line with a 32 yard reception.

Karla Brewer, LVN, and Jamie Benham, FNP, at Stamford Family Health Center Family Nurse Practitioner Jamie Benham works at Stamford Family Health Center. She received a Master of Science in the Nurse Practitioner program from Hardin Simmons University in 1997. Jamie has an extensive background in nursing and began her career in 1981 as a licensed vocational nurse.

Jamie lives in Weinert with her husband, David Caldwell. She has two sons, Justin and Brandon, and four grandchildren, Kayd, Kadence, Bryson and Bryn.

She enjoys spending time with her family as well as hiking and camping.

Jamie is passionate about mission work, traveling annually to Honduras and Mexico on medical missions.

She began going to Honduras in 1998 with the Honduras Baptist Dental Mission, of which she also serves on the Board of Directors. She has continued to go every year and sometimes more than once. For the past several years she started her own team, as well. She has also served at a youth camp in Oaxaca Mexico, for the past four years. Her passion is to serve the remote communities in Honduras who do not have access to health care.

The meeting is designed to update producers on current events and technology affecting the cotton industry, including updates on seed cotton program sign up, farm bills status, transportation of equipment along

roadways, precision ag technology, cotton seed industry changes, new equipment, and much more.

Terrell and Hall Named to ARN Top Ten

Stamford Cross Country runners Laramie Terrell and Chloe Hall were named #7 for their outstanding performance at the Eula Meet. Terrell, a sophomore, finished in 12:38 to place fourth individually. The freshman Hall ran a 12:47 in Eula, earning seventh place. The Stamford girls cross country team placed second at the Eula meet.

This week Terrell and Hall earned Honorable Mention honors finishing fourth and fifth, respectively, at the Coleman meet. The Lady Bulldogs placed second as a team.

DEATH NOTICE Jackie D. Carter, loving husband, father and Papa, passed from this life into his eternal home on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at the age of 70 years. Felix Keawnne Florez, 21, of Manhattan, Kansas, passed from this life to his eternal home on Saturday, September 22, 2018 in Topeka, Kansas. Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Sunday, September 30, 2018 at Kinney-Underwood Funeral Chapel with Pastor Paul Wright officiating, assisted by family members. Burial followed in Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home in Stamford. Family and friends encouraged friends to share in a time of visitation on Saturday, September 29, 2018 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Felix Keawanne Florez was born on June 15, 1997 in Abilene, Texas, the son of Greg and Jennifer (Lopez) Florez. He attended many schools during his childhood as a member of an Army family. He graduated from Manhattan High School in 2014. After high school, Felix quickly started to follow his all time dream of a career in law enforcement. At the young age of 18, Felix was hired by the Texas Department of Criminal Justice. In February 2018, Felix moved back to Manhattan, Kansas to continue his dream and be back close to his family.

He was promptly hired by the Geary County Sheriff’s Department as a correctional officer. His future plans were to move to Junction City, Kansas in April of 2019 to apply to become a deputy sheriff with Geary County Sheriff’s Department.

Felix was our cherished son, brother, and uncle. It was stated by everyone that worked with and knew Felix that he had a contagious, constant smile on his face and had a great personality. Hobbies that Felix enjoyed were hunting, shooting his guns, playing his X Box, and working on his car. He was very family oriented and one of his greatest passions was spending time with his family.

Felix was preceded in death by his great grandparents, Felix and Marjorie Moreno, John and Minerva Lopez and Gregorio and Concepcion Flores.

Loving family surviving Felix are his parents, Greg R. and Jennifer Florez of Manhattan, Kansas; three sisters, Shelby Lynn Florez of Ft. Hood, Jalyssa Breanne Heard of Manhattan, Kansas, Brittany Angelica Bernal of Washington State; four brothers, Adrian R. Florez, Isaiah M. Florez, both of Manhattan, Kansas, Armando J. Florez of Abilene, Greg A. Florez, of Houston; maternal grandparents, Robert G. and Cheryl Lopez of Forney, Pete and Linda Ruiz of Stamford; paternal grandparents, Gregorio and Yoshiko Florez of Abilene; and numerous aunts, uncles, cousins; and his extended family at Texas Department of Criminal Justice and the Geary County Sheriff’s Department.

HELLO FROM COWBOY COUNTRY

During the past three weeks, we have been celebrating Stamford’s Homecoming with articles about the twelve rural school districts that have consolidated with Stamford ISD. To continue in that venue, the next three articles will be about the campuses that existed in the early days of the Stamford School District. This week we will start with the Booker T. Washington School Campus.

Sadly, the Museum is lacking in primary sources and information about the Washington School. Almost all the information that I found came from the early newspaper articles, mainly from The Stamford Leader and The Stamford American. Luci Wedeking did an amazing job researching and printing out all of these articles and putting them in a binder in chronological order for the public to peruse. Come by and check it out!

Just to remind you of the early history of the Stamford Schools, the Stamford County Line Independent School District was established in March 1921; however, there had been privately conducted schools in Stamford from 1900, when the city was established.

I could not find when the first African-American campus, or school, was built in Stamford, but from later articles it appears that it was located in the part of town usually known as The Flats, and held grades 1-12.

The school was named after the prominent black leader, Booker T. Washington. The building was on a small piece of land owned by the school district. Apparently, this land was just big enough for the small school building because later articles mention that without land for sports fields, athletic teams could not be offered at the Washington School.

The earliest mention in the newspaper of Washington School was on May 18, 1923.

The Abilene Daily Reporter listed Miss Gladys Moten as the Principal for the Wash-

ington School in Stamford.

An article published in The Stamford Leader on August 7 1925, explained that a new classroom would be added to the Washington School to accommodate the influx of students that would reach close to 100 pupils for that year.

Based on an article from 1925, the Washington School would operate for a ninemonth term. In the beginning there would just be one teacher and a principal.

But after the cotton harvest, they expected more students to attend and had already made plans to hire a second teacher at that time. Stamford and the surrounding area were mainly agricultural, and cotton was the top cash crop. Cotton still had to be picked at this time, so it was not unusual for students from rural areas or lowincome families to forego school to help pick cotton, bringing in needed funds for the family. Most rural schools also had either a split session or had low attendance during cotton harvest. What was surprising is how long this lasted for the Washington School students. It was not until 1962 that Washington School would not open early and have a split session to accommodate students helping with the cotton harvest.

Almost all rural farming families had stopped this practice of holding their kids out of school to help out by the 1940s or 1950s. That was an eye-opener!

J.R. Johnson, principal for the Washington School, was instrumental in starting a West Texas Colored Institute for black teachers, offering workshops and continuing education concerning relevant issues teachers of African-American schools were experiencing. Some of these topics included, “Attention, and How to Hold It,” “How to Interest Parents in School Improvement,” and “Hygiene in the Public School.” (Wow, things really haven’t changed that much in schools! I’m sure I attended workshops

on these same topics. ) From 1925 until 1962, there are several articles a year concerning the events and activities at the Washington School. The school was growing at first and an article in 1925 stated that a third teacher would be hired due to the increase in enrollment.

February is currently considered Black History Month.

I thought this was a recent addition to our calendar, but I found articles as far back as 1926, where Washington School students celebrated National Negro History Week during the month of February. This would include an Open House to the public, presentations at a local civic club, or students singing music from black songwriters.

At the end of April in 1926, the first Booker T. Washington school building burned.

(Whispers abound that it was arson, but I could find no concrete evidence. However, knowing the time period, it would not surprise me.)

The Solomon Baptist Church graciously opened their building so the students and teachers could finish out the school year. Now came the task of rebuilding. The building was insured for $1000, but this was not enough to rebuild and the old building was sadly lacking. So, a man named Julius Rosenwald, who was a well-known philanthropist for education, gave a grant of $1,100 toward the building fund.

W.G. Swenson, on behalf of the Swenson Bros., gave a 2-acre plot of land with plenty of room for a football field, track field, and playground as well as room for a larger building. The black community came together and volunteered 192 days of common labor to construct the building. The white community took donations and passed a bond to help cover the rest of the cost. This building was completed in 1927. It now stands in ruins, but at its construction it was labeled as “modern”. With the extra room, athletics were introduced into the school

and articles begin to appear about football, basketball, baseball, and track teams.

Their mascot was the Tigers.

(Which confused me, considering they were considered a campus of Stamford ISD.) Reading these articles was like watching the Civil Rights movement happen in Stamford. There was an article about a “Colored Boy Scout Troop” being formed, sponsored by Washington School.

Many articles about students from Washington School competing in UIL events and taking top honors. And even a PTA was organized. During the 1950s, a Home Economics Department was added to the Washington Campus. To put some of these dates in perspective during the Civil Rights movement, remember that the Supreme Court case, Brown v. The Board of Education, occurred in 1954.

The Supreme Court overturned the previous decision of Plessy v. Ferguson, and ruled that segregation in schools was unconstitutional.

However, no time line was established for schools to desegregate. In 1955, the Supreme Court handed down another ruling stating that schools should desegregate “with all deliberate speed.”

Again, just a vague timeline.

The other issue, was that just because the Supreme Court handed down a ruling, it was up to the Executive Branch, the President, to enforce this ruling. Also, the education system was a state held power, not a federal power.

By the end of 1955, Stamford was still a segregated school

system.

In 1962, the State of Texas, passed a law that would require all schools to give their teachers a raise.

Stamford Schools were struggling to meet this demand.

Also, during 1962, the “new, modern” building built in 1927 for Washington School was in sad need of repairs.

Superintendent FitzGerald proposed three options to the school board to deal with the need for more money: 1) integrate Washington School and Bomar Heights School with the Stamford campuses to save money (they knew this was just a matter of time, and if we did it early it would save the school money); 2) trim the school budget down to the bare minimum, keeping in mind that the Washington School would not meet inspection and if inspected could produce a fine for the school; 3) raise the tax rate to meet the additional funds needed.

Gordon Wood, famous football coach for Stamford, wrote a letter to the editor of the Stamford American at this time, supporting the idea of integration for the good of our community. However, during a public election, the voters rejected desegregation for the Stamford schools.

Consequently, the tax rate was increased to meet the financial needs.

The Civil Rights Act of 1964, made the decision for the school. This was a federal law that prohibited segregation in public schools.

Although education was considered a state held power,

the constitution is also clear that a federal law trumps a state law. Schools had to comply. On May 20, 1965, the final commencement was held at Booker T. Washington School. The school year 19651966, would see only three campuses in Stamford, Oliver Elementary School, Reynolds Middle School, and Stamford High School. A new diversity would be seen in the class photos in the Stamford School annual for that year.

As I mentioned before, we are sorely lacking in photos and first-person accounts concerning the Booker T. Washington School. If you, or someone you know, might have information that they would be willing to share with us, we would really appreciate it. George Santayana said, “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” We need to preserve this history while there are still people around who remember it.

Our Homecoming Exhibit will be up until the end of the year, so stop by and see it.

BULLDOGS: Continued From Page 1 DeLeon posted some impressive stats in the loss with QB Kevin Yeager throwing for 341 yards and five touchdowns and running for another 163 yards and three touchdowns.

Dawson Matthews was the leading receiver for the Bearcats (yardage wise) with three catches for 121 yards; he matched Duran in that all three of his catches went for scores.

The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead with Bevel hitting Duran for a 55 yard touchdown on the third play of the game. Smith added the extra point for a 7-0 Bulldog lead with just over a minute gone.

The Bearcats earned a first down but the Bulldog defense stopped Jorge Gonzalez for a loss on third down so Yeager punted the ball away.

Stamford was buried deep in Bulldog territory when the punt went out of bounds on the one yard line. Bevel got breathing room with a weaving 23 yard keeper. Bevel hit Mitchell who headed for the opponents’ end zone; Mitchell was just tripped up at the DeLeon three yard line. Shavaris Cooper was hit for a loss back to the six. Bevel found Smith for the six yard touchdown; Smith added the PAT so the score was 14-0 with 6:51 left in the quarter.

The Bearcats again earned one first down and moved into Bulldog territory. D’Marcus Barber and Christian Cardenas combined to stop Yeager for no gain; two incomplete passes followed. On fourth down Duran tipped the ball away from the DeLeon receiver to turn the ball back over to Stamford.

Mitchell was strung out for a three yard loss to begin the drive but Smith was on the receiving end of a pass in the middle, good for 17 yards. A pass for Edwards fell incomplete but on the next play Bevel found Edwards at the goal line for a 44 yard touch-

down. Smith’s kick gave the Bulldogs a 21-0 lead and the Bearcats would never come closer than 20 points.

After another defensive stand the Bulldog offense took over at the Stamford 32. Bevel kept on first down but the play was negated by a holding penalty. Edwards was the target at midfield on the next play; the senior receiver made the catch and raced untouched into the end zone for a 78 yard touchdown and 28-0 lead.

The Dogs would get the ball back two plays later when Ethan Medina picked off a Yeager pass. The Bulldogs weren’t able to capitalize on the turnover and had to punt the ball away. DeLeon was able to move the ball but the Bulldog defense forced another Bearcat punt. Stamford moved backwards and had to punt; at this point the punting was over for the night with over half of the second quarter left to play.

DeLeon took over at their own 49 yard line and went on an eleven play drive for a touchdown. Yeager got the score on a 14 yard run and Emery Amick added the extra point.

The Bulldogs quickly added to their lead with a four play, 71 yard drive. Bevel limp legged his way for six yards before Mitchell broke wide for 20 yards. Following an incompletion, Bevel and Mitchell connected for a 45 yard touchdown.

Smith’s kick pushed the score to 35-7.

The next exchange of the football came with lost fumbles instead of punts.

Jorden Throneberry caught a pass but lost the football as he struggled for extra yardage. Keyven Mueller scooped up the loose ball and headed for the DeLeon end zone. Unfortunately for the Dogs Mueller lost the ball at the end of the play to give the ball back to the Bearcats. They did lose 42 yards of field position on the play.

Yeager found Tony Evans for a 30 yard completion

as the big play on the next Bearcat drive. Bulldog defenders pressured Yeager on his next throws and Smith intercepted a third down pass at the Stamford six and returned it out to the 15.

Duran had a step on his defender when Bevel found him at the 40; Duran made the catch and raced into the end zone for his second and Bevel’s sixth touchdown of the night. Bevel and Edwards hooked up for the two point conversion to give the Bulldogs a 43-7 lead with 1:51 left in the half.

The Bearcats used the ground game to move to the Stamford 13 with time running out. Yeager found Throneberry for a touchdown with the clock showing 0:00. Score at halftime 43-14.

DeLeon got the ball to open the second half and the Bearcats wasted no time in marching down the field on an eight play drive with Gonzalez breaking through the middle to score with 9:24 left in the third.

Mitchell opened the ensuing Bulldog drive with a 22 yard run to the Bearcat 46. Edwards took care of those yards when he took a short pass and worked his way down the sideline for a touchdown. The kick was blocked but the Bulldogs had pushed their lead to 49-21 just 31 seconds after the DeLeon score.

DeLeon scored the next TD in the slugfest that was the second half. The Bearcats scored on a 56 yard pass to Matthews.

Only one drive by each

team failed to put points on the board in the second half and that includes the victory formation by the Bulldogs to run out the clock.

The Bulldogs used eight plays to score, mixing runs and passes. Bevel almost got the score with his feet but he was pushed out of bounds at the one yard line.

Smith caught the touchdown pass on the next play.

A pass attempt for two failed leaving the score at 55-28.

The Bearcats came back with a 15 yard toss to Throneberry to cut the score to 55-35.

Bevel hit Mitchell with a screen pass good for 55 yards to the DeLeon 15. The two play drive ended with a 15 yard pass to Smith who also added the PAT to push the score up to 62-35.

DeLeon did the two play drive one better. The Bearcats started at midfield after Evans returned the kick. Yeager found Throneberry wide open for a 50 yard score.

The Bulldogs seemed to like the one play drive idea and adopted it for their own. Bevel hit Duran in stride at the DeLeon 43 and the senior receiver raced into the end zone to complete the 65 yard play with 1:20 left in the third quarter. In just 33 seconds three touchdowns had been scored. The third quarter ended with the Bulldogs holding a 68-42 lead.

As the fourth quarter started the pace of scoring slowed some but the scoring did not. DeLeon used an eight play drive to move 60 yards. Yeager ran the final four yards for the score.

that drive in plays and yards. The Dogs got first downs on three consecutive plays with the first coming on back to back penalties against the Bearcats. Mitchell caught a 13 yard pass for the second first down with Smith and Bevel having ten yard carries back to back. Mitchell carried over from the three yard line for the Bulldogs only rushing touchdown of the night.

Carson Holt caught a Bevel pass for the two point conversion to push the score to 76-48 with 6:44 left to go in the game.

Yeager added his final rushing touchdown of the night with a 24 yard gallop to cut the score to 76-55.

Stamford answered through the air. Flick caught a 32 yard pass to the DeLeon 33. Mitchell got his second receiving touchdown from there. Duran made the catch for the two point conversion and an 84-55 score with 4:51 still remaining to be played.

Evans broke free for 22 yards and was just tripped up at the Bulldog 25. Gonzalez ran for six but Barber caught Evans for a six yard loss. Yeager was held to a four yard gain on third and ten. A fourth down pass into the end zone was tipped but almost caught;

it wasn’t and the Bulldogs took over at their own 21.

Bevel was under pressure on first down and threw the ball away. On second down he found Mitchell who made the catch and showed his speed on the 79 yard touchdown. A running play for two points failed but the Bulldogs had hit 90 and had a 35 point lead with 1:31 left on the clock.

DeLeon wasn’t ready to call it quits just yet. Evans went wide for 26 yards; then Yeager hit Gonzalez for a 20 yard touchdown.

The kick brought the score to 90-62.

The Bulldogs ran out the final eight seconds to secure their fifth victory of the season. The 5-0 Bulldogs will travel to Clyde Friday night to face the 1-3 Bulldogs of District 3-3A, Division I. Clyde is coming off a heart breaking 27-26 OT loss against Colorado City. DeLeon will have an open week in preparation for their district play.

Pide and Mittie Dunham were in Abilene on Thursday for doctor appointments, and while there they got to visit with granddaughter, Sonja Dunham.

Bo and Whiz Creighton visited with Pide and Mittie Dunham on Sunday.

Albert and Jana Hinkle of Abilene visited with her parents, Danny and Phyllis Letz on Saturday and enjoyed having lunch with them.

Danny and his band, Dusty Creek, played at the VFW in Sweetwater on Saturday evening.

Carm Letz drove to Abilene on Friday evening after work to get her three granddaughters, Darbee, Laynee and Hazelee and brought them home with her to spend the night and all day Saturday.

Their parents, Micah and Lacey came after them on Saturday evening but not before they all had dinner together.

Steve Letz of Abilene came down on his motorcycle on Sunday and visited with Carm for a while.

Dale Letz was with Terry Letz and Brody, Marvin Vahlenkamp, Doug Vahlenkamp and Keith Corzine at the Lodge Hall to get it ready for the sausage supper.

Debbie Vahlenkamp visited with Carm on Sunday afternoon.

I enjoyed a very nice ride with son and daughter-inlaw, Mike and Maxelle, on a drive to Denton to visit with my brother and sisterin-law, Virgil and Geneva Vahlenkamp and their son, Charles. We enjoyed a great lunch out with Virgil, Geneva, Charles, and Bud and Francene Vahlenkamp all of Denton.

It was a beautiful day to travel and enjoyed a great visit.

Make Your Own History I have just one word to describe last Friday night’s game between Stamford and DeLeon: Wow! Personally, I never thought I would see our scoreboard show the kinds of numbers that were seen at the end of that game, but there is a first time for everything with our Bulldogs scoring 90 points to an equally impressive 62 from DeLeon. It would be an understatement to say that this is definitely one for the books, especially with a few records being broken that night by the Bulldogs themselves and quarterback Peyton Will McClure Bevel. I’m sure that there will be a lot of naysayers that will scream “bad sportsmanship” with the high score and that the Bulldogs were just “running up the score,” but based on the reports that I have seen and heard about the game, as well as DeLeon’s own score, to me it is nothing that we haven’t heard before concerning how people from other towns feel about the team, but that is not to say that we are any better either as I have heard fellow citizens (including myself) call bad sportsmanship on other teams. At the end of the day, it all balances out and we can all boil it down to one thing: it is only a game!

With that said, I didn’t want to spend this week talking about the negative comments made, but instead focus on the positives said and the much-talked about records being broken that night. I can safely say that I am sure no one going into that game was intent on making history, but that is what these boys did and it was all just part of the game for them; nothing really probably sank in until afterwards. However, even with all of these celebrations and coverage, you can still see the humility in the boys and the fans supporting them throughout. We are celebrating, but we are not trying to rub it in anyone’s faces. It is a cool piece of history that will be talked about for a long time and will be remembered in the future. It just seems funny how something that seems so simple such as a game of football can become history in the blink of an eye.

This game will be remembered for a long time, but we should not let that define a legacy. We can always do something to add to our history in our own small way. What can start out so small and seemingly insignificant can become something that we can remember for a long time. I’m not saying that we should try to do something big like what the Bulldogs accomplished, but instead we should just try to better ourselves and accomplish something that we can see as history, even if it is just for ourselves. What you do today can define your legacy tomorrow, even if you do not feel like you have done any more than usual. Throughout my three years of writing stories for the Stamford American, I was able to talk to so many people in town to share their story, even ones that felt like there was no story to tell. After a little bit of push, these stories were told which added to the person’s, or people’s, history.

I am not trying to boost my own ego here by saying this, but to all of those that I had the pleasure and honor of listening to and sharing your stories, you have not only added to my personal memories, but you have also added to your own history by allowing your stories to be shared. There are still many more stories to tell that will add to those that we have seen over the years and Stamford’s history continues to grow and flourish. Friday night’s game will definitely be remembered for a long time, but it will also be just another chapter in Stamford’s history. The question that remains now is simple: What will you do to make your own history?

Terror Trails In The Northeast Texas Woods Gary Hughes has a scary place near Yantis in Northeast Texas. It’s called Terror Trails and gets lots of visitors on weekends in October.

“On our busiest weekends we’ll have more than a thousand people on a Saturday night,” says Gary, who runs it with a staff of more than fifty people. “There’s at least an hour and a half wait on our busiest nights, but no one seems to mind. They’re with their friends; they’re having fun cuttin’ up.

While they’re waiting we show scary movies on a big screen. We also serve pizzas. We’ve had people who come out just to eat pizza and watch a movie.

They don’t even go through the trails. Every once in a while we’ll have someone run through who acts like a crazy person with a chainsaw.

That keeps them entertained.”

The place has been scaring people for twenty years.

“You really can’t tell who you can scare. Our toughest customer is

a thirteenyear-old male, you know, the type that says ‘nothing scares me.’ Then you’ll see fully grown cowboys running like little girls to get away from the scary stuff.”

A lot of the same people show up every year.

“We’re more like a family tradition now. Every year, the same families come out and have fun together. That’s what I’ve always wanted to do, just give families a nice place to come and enjoy themselves for the evening.”

A highway splits the venue in half. On one side of the highway is a haunted half-mile trail through the woods, which features a ghost train, clowns, a bat cave and mazes. On the other side is a haunted house that is full of mummies, coffins, skeletons, eerie

laughter, creaks and groans, all controlled by sophisticated electronics.

“We’re using more projectors now,” says Gary.

“We have a witch in the window stirring her brew. My background is in lighting. We used to do entertainment lighting for discotechs and roller-skating rinks and that kind of stuff. I’m really into electronics. I enjoy twisting wires.”

Some things are replaced every year, keeping it interesting for visitors who come back on an annual basis. Gary has investments and doesn’t depend on income from

Terror Trails. Much of the profits go to help various groups like first responders, the Lions club and others. Gary has had the property for some time. He used to ride his mountain bike on trails around Dallas.

When he moved to his property he rode for a while, then converted the trails into what they are today.

Ten dollars gets you in the haunted house or trails. Combo tickets are nineteen dollars.

Discounts are offered for military, police and firemen. Everything closes around midnight except on Halloween when it shuts down at 11 PM. Visitors come from Texas and surrounding states, some by the busload. His website is terrortrails.com

More Shouts of Praise This week I want to continue to focus on our praise and worship that we offer towards Jesus. As mentioned last week, our praise and worship can be unique and does not have to look like everyone else’s. God created us each uniquely but we all share the same calling in this life. Each of us was created to worship and glorify the One True God our LORD Jesus Christ (Isa. 43:7). Below I have listed some more Biblical principles of worship that I came to discover when reading through the Book of Psalms: The Word of God is the utmost importance when worshipping God. In order to fully worship in “Spirit and in truth” (John 4:24), we must follow God’s Word in full. Obedience to God’s Word is our way of showing God that we love Him (John 14:15).

Though the enemy (Satan) and the enemies of this world attack us, we are safe in the Father’s hands.

No matter whom or what is after us, we can always find God fighting for us and not against us. He truly is each of ours “refuge and strength and an everpresent help in trouble” (Ps. 46:10). Because of His power, we can come to Him and worship Him with all that we have.

The LORD answers our prayers and is always working for our good (Rom. 8:28). No matter the request or cry for help, God is al-

ways willing to hear us and work on our behalf. Even the unanswered prayers are hidden blessings in disguise. As a Christ follower, we truly have been “blessed with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly realms because we are united with Christ” (Eph. 1:3). Since we have been blessed we owe it all to Him by worshipping Him with all that we have to offer.

God is the source of all comfort and in Him alone do we find strength. No matter how far we try to run, He will always be with us. His indwelling of the Holy Spirit is what moves us in the direction in which we are headed.

Every morning I begin my day by praying this verse out of Psalter, “Let me hear of your unfailing love each morning, for I am trusting you. Show me where to walk, for I give myself to you” (Ps. 143:8). He is the source of all things and the heart of our worship.

Worshiping God can be done in many different ways. In a congregational worship setting the Word of God highly recommends us to use instruments and to worship freely in Spirit and in Truth. The book of Psalms ends with a declaration and call to praise God with instruments and to make joyful noises towards the King (Ps. 150). From my personal experience, I have felt God’s presence in Worship way more when following the call to worship in

Psalm 150 than any other.

As Christians one day, all we will do is praise and worship God in Heaven, so I encourage you to go ahead and stand up, uncross your arms and sing to the One who saved your soul from eternal damnation.

Lastly, our worship, devotion, and praise are all to Jesus our LORD for He is the King of kings. Everything in this life and the next is all about the Messiah and our everyday life should reflect that. Jesus is the anointed King and the fulfillment of the covenant promise that was given to David.

He deserves our praise and Worship every day for the rest of our lives. Want to know what life is really about? It’s simple… It’s all about JESUS!!!

There’s power in worshiping God! I cannot do it justice by any means through my writing and your reading. I want to encourage you to experience the Holy Spirit through worship for yourself! There is absolutely no feeling that it can be compared to, it’s a taste of God’s Glory and a peek inside the Throne Room of Heaven. Worship the LORD this week for that is why you were created!

ESSAYS FROM WEST OF 98 James M. Decker

A Shining City on a Hill Editor’s note: This is the fifth part in my series on drugs and addiction in our communities. If you have not read the first four parts (“Real Problems, Our Problems,” “They Are Us,” “Solutions, But What Solutions?,” “Shine a Light Into the Darkness”), I encourage you to do so.

“You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden.”

–Matthew 5:14 President Ronald Reagan famously spoke of America as a “shining city on a hill” in his farewell speech to the nation on January 11, 1989. He said that this vision was “a tall, proud city built on [strong] rocks…God blessed and teeming with people of all kinds living in harmony and peace.” He had previously used this same imagery in a speech called “A Vision for America,” given on the eve of his presidential election, November 3, 1980. That night he spoke that Americans were committed to the vision of a shining “city on a hill” just as they were at the time those words originated, way back in 1630.

John Winthrop was a Puritan lawyer and one of the founders of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. As these pioneering settlers left England for America, Winthrop gave a lay sermon to the colonists, preaching a vision of their colony inspired by Mat-

thew 5:14, “as a city upon a hill,” with the eyes of the world upon it. This brilliant sermon is too long to analyze in this short space, but in short, Winthrop called upon the colonists to act as stewards of God’s gifts, restrain evil, show God’s grace through “love, mercy, and gentleness,” and commit themselves to brotherly love and unity, then their community would become a model for others to follow.

Last week, I called on our community leaders to shine a light on the darkness in our communities.

Today, I write of the inspiration that comes from shining that light.

As I’ve written, the darkness of addiction, hopelessness, and despair are not a Stamford problem or a West Texas problem. It’s an American problem that transcends rural, suburban, and urban, wealthy or poor, blue collar or white collar, and all races and ethnicities. The darkness of our world manifests itself beyond just addiction. You simply need to turn on the television, read the news, or log on to social media. We’re angry, bitter, and constantly on edge with one another.

Anonymous internet commenters threaten people.

Friends and acquaintances quarrel on Facebook over politics. Too many elected officials lie, enrich themselves at our expense, and destroy lives and reputa-

tions to gain power or put points on some imaginary political scoreboard. This darkness is overwhelming our country and the lives of our friends and family.

This darkness is stoked from the pit of Hell to divide and destroy God’s people.

We can be better. We ARE better. I don’t know how to solve all of our country’s problems, but I do know it’s time to drive the darkness out of our communities, one by one.

When faced with an opportunity to quarrel or be positive, turn away from the darkness. If you’re struggling with addiction, despair, or hopelessness, reach out. So many of us want to see you filled with light.

When we shine a light on the darkness in our communities, our light will become a beacon to others. A city set upon a hill cannot be hidden, even when that city is a rural community in West Texas in 2018 and the national news seems to overwhelm us. Let us become that city on a hill and shine our light, no matter what darkness may attack us or try to stop us.

Like John Winthrop’s Massachusetts Bay Colony, we will be a model for others to follow.
