Capital Murder Trial Guilt-Innocence Phase Begins BY KAY SPEARS Jury selection for the capital murder trial of Dillion Compton began on August 13, 2018 with 1,400 Jones County residents being reduced to 484 potential jurors. After reviewing the extensive questionnaires jurors filled out, the defense and prosecution teams were able to bring the number down to 260. Beginning August 27, 2019 six appointments

per day were set up to pick the 12 person jury and alternates. This process took the month of September and the Guilt-Innocence Phase of the Capital Murder case began Monday, October 1, 2018. For the duration of the trial, Compton is being housed at the Taylor County Jail and is being transported to court by the Jones County Sheriff’s Department. Compton is on trial for the murder of Correctional Officer

Marianne “Mari” Johnson on July 16, 2016. Mari Johnson, 55, was found near the kitchen in a dry storage room at the French M. Robertson Prison Unit in the Jones County portion of Abilene, TX. She was taken to Hendrick Medical Center, where she died. Obtaining justice for Johnson has two sides, the state and the accused, Compton. SEE COURT, PG 8

Stamford ISD Superintendent Dr. Shaun Barnett announced his retirement today, closing a stellar 8-year career at the helm of Stamford ISD. Dr. Barnett will work with the Board of Trustees on a transition plan and will continue through June 30, 2019. As Superintendent, Dr. Barnett has made an enormous impact, providing leadership through Dr. Shaun Barnett several major initiatives and instructional enhancements, all while dealing with financial challenges created by decreased state funding. He has worked continuously to update and maintain the facilities and transportation fleet at Stamford ISD. He has also worked with the staff to provide a technology-rich environment for the students and staff, providing a technology device for every student and every teacher at Stamford ISD. Dr. Barnett has also developed a positive staff culture that is intent on creating an atmosphere based on studentcentered, authentic learning with a global perspective. Under his direction, Stamford ISD has enjoyed a great deal of success in academics, athletics, and in vocational areas of the school. SEE BARNETT, PG 9
