Bulldogs Open District Play With 41-16 Victory Over Ozona Lions

The Stamford Bulldogs got back on the winning track with the long trek to Ozona to face the Lions to open District 3-2A DI play. The Dogs used quick scoring drives to open a 27-0 halftime lead and matched Ozona’s two touchdowns in the second half to come home with a 41-16 victory.

The Lions tried to take a page from Clyde’s book and held onto the football for almost three quarters (35:11 time of possession) to just 12:49 time of possession by the Bulldogs. (Remember: Texas high school quarters are twelve minutes not 15 like college and pros.)

State vs. Compton: Jury Delivers a Guilty of Capital Murder Verdict

tions concerning this case and their deliberations. At about 1:40pm the jury was led out of the courtroom to the jury room where they had lunch and began deciding the guilt or innocence of Dillion Compton, accused of murdering Corrections

Officer Mari Johnson in 2016.

Not Guilty, Guilty of Capital Murder and Guilty of Manslaughter were the three verdicts the people on the jury had to choose from.

The jury was led back

into the courtroom at 4:50pm after informing the court they had a verdict. The Judge read their verdict, that Dillion Gage Compton was Guilty of Capital Murder in the death of Mari Johnson.

Stamford Students Plan for College Finance On the evening of Tuesday, October 9, 2018, Stamford High School seniors and their parents had the opportunity to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which is a free service provided by the federal government and is the first step in being awarded financial aid for attending a college or university. LeeAnn Mueller, SHS Counselor, and Theasa Lefevre, SHS AVID Elective teacher, coordinated the event that was held in the SHS Cafeteria. Courtney Adams from Panhandle-Plains Management & Servicing Corporation was present to facilitate and answer questions as parents and students completed the online information using the students’ school-issued MacBook laptops so that the student could be considered for grants and loans in order to attend college. Each student was able to choose up to 20 colleges or universities to have their information sent for consideration. Each college/university then prepares a financial aid packet for the individual student indicating what funding is available as financial assistance. Adams, who works with students across the North Central Texas area, praised the Stamford AVID Seniors for being so prepared for this event.

Parenting and Drugs Don’t Mix

Jones County, we have a problem. Parents and other caregivers in our community are putting children in danger by using drugs. It is as simple and as devastating as that.

The Anson Police Department is cracking down on offenders of Section 22.041 of the Texas Penal Code, Abandoning or Endangering Child. This section deals with children younger than 15 years of age and there are two parts to it. The first part concerns intentionally abandoning “the child in any place under circumstances that expose the child to an unreasonable risk of harm” they have “custody, care, or control of.”

The second part centers around endangering a child or

children. “A person commits an offense if he intentionally, knowingly, recklessly, or with criminal negligence, by act or omission, engages in conduct that places a child younger than 15 years in imminent danger of death, bodily injury, or physical or mental impairment.”

A child is placed in danger if “the person injected, inhaled, or otherwise introduced a controlled substance listed in Penalty Group 1, Section 481.102, Health and Safety Code, into the human body when the person was not in lawful possession of the substance.”

Controlled substances in Penalty Group 1 include most opiates and opium derivatives, as well as Cocaine, Heroin, Methamphetamine, Morphine, Oxycodone, Rohypnol, GHB,

and Ketamine. Illegal possession of any of these controlled substances have state jail felony consequences.

Marijuana is also an illegal substance. Illegal possession of Marijuana carries a Class A or B misdemeanor depending on the quantity in possession.

Illegal drug use by caregivers endangers children and using comes with consequences. Jail time is a consequence that will take you away from your child.

Second hand smoke from Marijuana is measured by the amount of THC present in the blood. THC is the main active ingredient in the Cannabis plant. Children can breathe the smoke and become ill.

The effects of using Marijuana include relaxation, euphoria, disorientation, altered time and space perception, drowsiness,

paranoia, image distortion, and increased heart rate. Smoking or ingesting any drug impairs your judgment and takes over your ability to function normally. This inability to function at a normal level affects the safety of the child or children you are responsible for. Parenting requires having a clear mind and good reflexes to expect the unexpected.

Parents and caregivers who use drugs put their children in danger, and the police department in the Anson community are stepping up to make arrests and protect our children.

The police do not know what children are in danger. It is our responsibility to let them know when a parent is using drugs.

Let’s protect the children since they cannot protect themselves. See it, say it.

BULLDOGS: Continued From Page 1 The Bulldogs had the ball for just 25 plays in the first half on the way to their four touchdowns.

The Lions took the opening kickoff and started the night at their own 31 yard line. Sophomore back Abraham Rodriguez got the Lions’ initial first down with a two yard run on fourth and one. However, on the next play senior quarterback Marcus Perez was swarmed

by Bulldog defenders as he rescued a bad snap for a ten yard loss. The ball went over on downs when Perez was stopped by Carson Holt and Lane Patton for a three yard loss on fourth down.

The Bulldogs took over at the Ozona 46 and went to work. An incompletion started the drive but Peyton Bevel found Zach Duran along the Ozona side line for a 14 yard gain on second down. Bevel kept for 15 yards and a first down to the Lion 17. Bevel would end the night as the leading rusher for the Bulldogs with 60 yards on ten carries. RJ Smith got open in the end zone and Bevel hit him for Stamford’s first touchdown of the night. Smith added the PAT to give the Dogs a 7-0 lead with 5:18 left in the first quarter.

Ozona moved into Stamford territory for the first time on the ensuing drive following a 15 yard keeper by Perez. Three more carries by Perez left the Lions facing fourth and eight at the Bulldog 32.

Perez passed to Rodriguez for the first down on a very, very close play. A chop block penalty against the Lions pushed them back to the 38. Perez tried to find a receiver but Tre Mitchell was there at the Bulldog 18 to make the pick and return the interception to the Ozona 45.

The Bulldogs took over with 17 seconds on the clock for the first quarter.

Bevel found Kaleb Flick with an 18 yard pass and run play. Unfortunately as Flick was fighting for yard-

age he injured his elbow and had to be taken from the field on a stretcher. An incompletion and a short gainer by Bevel ended the first quarter with a 7-0 Stamford edge on the scoreboard and the football at the Ozona 24. The Dogs opened the second quarter with an incompletion to set up fourth and seven. Bevel worked through tacklers to gain 13 yards to the eleven.

A pass for Trace Edwards in the end zone was knocked away. Bevel found Smith in the back of the end zone for a touchdown on the next play. The extra point attempt failed but the Lions had jumped so the Dogs decided to try for two. The Bevel to Smith connection worked for two points and a 15-0 Stamford lead. The drive had taken just 58 seconds.

The Lions started with good field position and again moved into Bulldog territory with an eleven yard pass from Perez to Lazaro Rodriguez. Rodriguez saved a turnover on the next play when he fell on a ball fumbled by Perez.

The turnover did occur on the next play when Carson Holt intercepted a pass intended for Jayden Fay. An unsportsmanlike conduct penalty pushed the Bulldogs back to their own seven but they did have the ball and were ready for another quick drive.

Mitchell gave the team some breathing room with a 13 yard reception out to the 20. Shavaris Cooper went over the right side of the offensive line for a five yard gain. A seven yard pass to Smith along the Stamford side line moved the ball out to the 32 with another first down. Bevel found Mitchell for a 15 yard gainer and followed with a 14 yard pass to Smith into Ozona territory. A penalty for movement was erased plus one with a six yard reception by Smith.

Bevel found Smith as the receiver was going into the end zone for Smith’s third

touchdown of the night.

Smith was the leading receiver of the game with ten receptions for 148 yards to go along with the three touchdowns.

Ozona went backwards on its next drive courtesy of a ten yard sack of Perez

by D’Marcus Barber and a three yard loss when Keith Richards hit Zachary Talamantez for a three yard loss.

The Bulldogs would have had the ball in Ozona territory but a post possession face mask penalty pushed the Dogs back to their own 37. They went back an additional seven after a holding penalty was called on first down. Smith took a short pass and added another ten yards to it to push the ball out to the 46. Bevel was caught for a two yard loss on second and one but a penalty against the Lions converted the first down.

Bevel hit Trace Edwards with an 18 yard strike and then found Smith for 13 more yards. Bevel pushed the ball to the twelve yard line with a keeper. A seven yard pass to Smith pushed the ball to first and goal from the five. Mitchell took a direct snap and headed into the end zone. The try for two was unsuccessful but the scoreboard read 27-0 with just 1:04 left in the first half.

The Bulldogs received the second half kickoff and set up shop at their own 25. Bevel scrambled for 13 yards to get things started.

Mitchell and Bevel hooked up for a 30 yard connection to the Ozona 32. Bevel was sacked for a ten yard loss and Barber was stopped for a four yard loss to set up third and 24 from the Ozona 46. Bevel found Edwards to eat up 16 yards to leave the Dogs facing fourth and eight. Bevel called his own number and picked up the first down with an extra yard for good measure.

Smith moved the ball to the two yard line with a 19 yard reception. With first and goal Bevel hit Mitchell

but the ball popped free as the goal line loomed; the ball took a Bulldog leap into the arms of Nolan Baker for the touchdown. This drive, which took three minutes, took almost as long as the four first half scoring drives combined.

The Lions used eleven rushing plays to move 55 yards for their first touchdown of the night. Perez converted a fourth and one with a two yard run; A. Rodriguez added an 18 yard run; and L. Rodriguez carried Mitchell for an eleven yard gain to the one.

A. Rodriguez got the score and a Perez to L. Rodriguez pass added a two point conversion to cut the score to 33-8 with 1:47 remaining in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs started in a hole with a runback that went backward and a penalty to boot pushed the line of scrimmage to the Stamford four yard line. A pass for Edwards was too long and Mitchell was caught for a loss of two. A third down pass fell incomplete to bring up fourth down from the two. The fourth down snap sailed over Bevel’s head and out of the end zone for a safety and a 33-10 score.

Ozona had time for one play before the end of the quarter and Joe Perez hit M. Perez for a 33 yard gain to the Bulldog 19. After a first down pass fell incomplete, the Lions stuck to the ground with A. Rodriguez, L. Rodriguez and M. Perez sharing the load. M. Perez jumped up and over the pile to convert a one yard touchdown. Rodriguez was stopped short on the try for two. With 8:38 left in the game the score stood at 33-16.

Barber took the ensuing kickoff at the Stamford 39 and returned it to the Ozona 45. Cooper ran the jet sweep for eleven yards and followed with a three yard gain that could have been longer but for a slip on his cut. Edwards was on the end of a nine yard pass play from Bevel to notch another first down to the Lions 22. Bevel kept for five

yards and six to move to first and ten at the eleven.

Cooper got the call and fought for yards down to the three yard line. Mitchell appeared to have scored on the next play but the Bulldogs were penalized for a false start. Bevel found Cooper in the back corner of the end zone for an eight yard touchdown on the next play. Bevel to Smith worked for the two point conversion to push the score to 41-16 with 5:34 left in the game.

The Lions would have one more drive. A. Rodriguez had the big play with a 32 yard run where he eluded a number of would be tacklers. Rodriguez followed with a two yard reception.

L. Rodriguez took a direct snap and ran for five yards to set up third and three at the Stamford 22. Perez kept but was hit for a three yard loss. The quarterback kept again on fourth down and was again hit for a loss to

turn the ball back over.

All the Bulldogs had to do to secure their 41-16 victory was to take a couple of knees from the victory formation. The win moves the Dogs to 6-1 for the year and more importantly 1-0 in district play. District play continues next week with Winters coming to Stamford and Ozona traveling to Forsan; Hawley has the open date this week. The Blizzards are 5-2, 0-1 following their loss to Hawley Friday night.

HELLO FROM COWBOY COUNTRY

Small town, USA. A great place to grow up or raise your kids. But, also a great place to return home to if your career or job takes you farther away. We had just such a visitor this week.

Ryan Rogers, son of Russ and Cathy Rogers of Anson, and grandson of Clinton Rogers of Stamford. He now lives in Los Angeles, California, and has had a pretty successful career. He started a soap company, which he sold to the Target franchise. Now he makes custom lighting for restaurants and residences in Los Angeles. He was so charming and fun to talk to. When we asked him the name of his business, he replied, “Jones County Road.” What an awesome way to pay homage to your heritage!

The last few weeks, we have been celebrating Stamford’s Homecoming with articles about the twelve rural school districts that have consolidated with Stamford ISD, the Booker T. Washington School campus, and the Bomar Heights

School campus. This week we will focus on the first Stamford High School building which was located on Moran Street. Not much could be found about the “old high school.” And the earliest school scrapbook the Museum possesses is from 1911, but it does not mention the school.

The first Stamford High School building was constructed in 1906. It was a testament to the growing town of Stamford. Located on the north side of East Moran Street. The new building was not completed in time for graduation in 1906, and during 1907, there was a scarlet fever epidemic, so no graduation exercises were conducted.

The building was properly dedicated in 1908.

The cap stone read: “Trustees: B.B. Greenwood, W.C. Blanchett, J.E. Duncan, W.F. Bullington and S.R. Robertson 1908 – Holderness & Gates Contractors – E.C. Withers Surp. Architect.”

A “new” high school was erected on Reynolds and Orient Street in the south part of town in 1923. The building on Moran Street was not torn down until

1952 and the wood from the building was sold to the Colonial Club in Fort Worth, and the bricks were sold locally.

Leon Billington (SHS Class of 1951) tells that when he was a small boy, before the “old high school” had been torn down, and the windows had been boarded up, kids would tell each other stories about what “lived” in the old school and it was a big deal to sneak in and look around. Sounds like fun! He told about a transient that lived in there.

He said they never saw him, but they found his sleeping pallet and his things.

Our Homecoming Exhibit will be up until the end of the year, so stop by and see it. The PALS class, under the guidance of Mr. Gilbert, have been volunteering every Friday morning at the museum and they have been working on an index of names from the Washington School and Bomar Heights School newspaper articles that Luci put together. Come by and check it out.

One last note, we got a letter from Santa Claus this week, and he’s dropping by for a visit to the Museum.

His head elf is supposed to get back to me with the exact date, so stay tuned!

One of those folks was my friend Pat Dillon, who is a lawyer and farmer in rural Iowa.

We were comparing farming notes when he made reference to “drain tile.” I asked him to explain and he told us that Iowa farmers used drain tile to remove excess water from their fields. Those of us from West Texas looked at him as if Pat was speaking an alien language to us.

And then came the fall of 2018 in West Texas. Places in the greater Stamford metro area have received upwards of 20 inches of rain in just over a month. Some places may be approaching 30 inches. If you got your wheat planted, your wheat might look good. If you didn’t get it planted, it’s going to be a while. The maturing cotton crop doesn’t exactly need a monsoon season on it.

Creeks have spread out across pastures in a manner reminiscent of the Louisiana swamps, taking out fences and water gaps along the way.

Lake Stamford, on the date of this essay, is over 5 feet above its spillway and approaching levels seen only a handful of times in the lake’s 60 year history. Numerous houses, cabins, and trailers on the lake’s shoreline have been flooded. More are threatened, pending further rises of the lake. Of course, the aforementioned Louisiana swamp conditions are created by some of the lake’s tributaries, so more water is headed that way, and rain remains in our forecast.

As a lifelong resident of semi-arid West Texas (the “semi” is arguable), it’s hard to wish for less rain. Along the way, we’ve benefited our crops and pastures. We’ve refilled our reservoir so that we have

several years of water stored away. But those benefits have not come without a price, particularly to those who have lost residences or those whose agricultural operations are suffering financially.

In thinking about this, I was reminded of Jesus’ words spoken in Matthew 6 and written above. No matter what our problems—whether it be a specific turn of events like this flood, or an ongoing life struggle like health or finances—none of us can add a single hour to our lives by worrying. No matter how hard we try, no matter how much we worry, no matter how miserable we make ourselves in the anxiety of it all, we’re not going to add an hour to our life.

While studying Matthew 6, I was drawn to Psalm 37. Verses 3 through 5 tell us how to combat our worry: Trust in the Lord and do good; dwell in the land and enjoy safe pasture.

Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.

Commit your way to the Lord; trust in him and he will do this: Eventually, the rain will taper off, and before long, we’ll probably be praying for rain once again. When it dries up, we’ll finish planting our wheat. We’ll strip our cotton. We’ll repair our fences and water gaps.

Those of us with flooded lake properties will assess, repair, and rebuild.

These won’t be the last trials any of us face, nor the last causes for worry. I hope that we combat our life’s worries and anxiety proactively, rather than struggle reactively. I pray that we trust in the Lord, take delight in the Lord, and commit our way to the Lord, so that when life’s next floods appear, rather than consume ourselves with worry, our mindset is right and we’re prepared to simply remember the birds of the air.

Oh gosh, I have lived in this country for a long time and the Texas weather has still got me unsure what’s coming next. Following weeks of the heat and drought, now we have floods and cold weather.

Oh well, that’s life.

In spite of all the water and mud there were approximately four hundred and thirty people that came to the sausage supper at the Old Glory Lodge Hall on Saturday evening for a delicious meal and dancing. It seemed everyone had a great time. You really get to see folks that you probably have not seen in a year. I am glad it turned out so well for the committee as they do work hard to make it a success. Look forward to one coming up next year.

Remember our musical coming up on Saturday, Oct. 27 with the concession stand opening at 5:30 P M and the program will follow. This will be our last musical for 2018 since we do not have musicals in November and December due to the holidays. We hope to see all of you there to enjoy this musical with us.

Keep in mind the Hobby Club Bazaar coming up on November 3, from 9 A M to 2 P M. There will be so many vendors with beautiful items for sale, plenty of good food and Bingo and the drawing for

the beautiful quilt. Mark your calendar.

We were saddened to hear of the passing of a dear friend and former Old Glory resident, Alene Trice Collins Schmidt.

Gravesite services for Alene, 94, will be held on Monday morning at the cemetery in Haskell. Alene and all her siblings grew up in this community and graduated from OGHS. The family was very active in the community and school. Our sincere sympathy to family and friends of Alene.

Everyone that attended our Senior Citizens Dance at the OG Community Center on Thursday evening had a great time with lots of wonderful music and delicious food.

Thanks to all the ladies that brought the goodies and to all in attendance.

Dale and Carm Letz were in Haskell on Sunday evening to attend the singing held at the East Side Baptist Church. Their granddaughters participated in the program.

Enjoying a delicious lunch and a nice visit with Glen and Helen Pierce on Saturday were their grandchildren/great grandson, Matthew Pierce of Lubbock and Kara Briggs and Crete of Haskell. On Saturday evening Guy and Sue Callicoatte of Abilene brought her Aunt Helen and Uncle Glen a delicious dove dinner with all the trimmings. They enjoyed a great visit.

Marcie Tucker of Hamby came to visit her mother, Anita, on Saturday and attended the sausage supper with her. She spent the night and attended church with her mom and had lunch with her before returning home.

As someone who gets to look at a lot of trees, trees of many different species, under many differing circumstances, I get to see all kinds of things. Granted, I mostly work in West Texas, so the “all kinds of things” that I get to look at are mostly West Texas things, but frankly, that’s still a lot for one person to try to wrap their mind around.

And, since I’ve never been accused of having an excess of mind, it’s probably just as well that I stick with one region.

One thing that I’ve long made a point of is that some regions have particular problems, that are unique to that area, or at least not something that happens just anywhere that trees grow. For instance, our area has highly alkaline soil, fairly extreme, and dry, summer weather, low humidity, mostly poor soils, and little running water. That means that, for trees, this is a very different place than somewhere with acidic soils, high humidity, and running water. Granted, our local conditions are duplicated, or even somewhat magnified in a lot of other geographic areas, but still, in many respects, conditions from region to region are going to vary.

Something that I see a fair amount of in West Texas, that I don’t hear too much about from my East and South Texas peers, is sunscald. Generally, sun scald is when the heat of the sun is more than the trunk of a tree can handle, and the part of the trunk that is exposed to the sun, is killed. Naturally enough, sun scald is not something that is limited to only West Texas, although you could certainly understand why it happens here fairly commonly. However, if you read arboricultural materials, where the authors have studied sun scald, you will soon find out that they consider it to be something that mostly happens in the spring, not so much during the summer. There is usually a lot of information attached to these papers (many of them peer reviewed), concerning early spring cell

WEST TEXAS TREES AND LANDSCAPES

By Bruce Kreitler and the KWKC Green Team elongation, and how at that particular time, the spring time sun is hot enough to kill the cells. Over the years, I’ve read many of those papers, and have no reason to doubt them. I’m sure the researchers who write those papers are correct in what they are seeing, and reporting. However, I’ve never read one of those written by somebody who did the research in a really hot, dry, area, with extreme summer sun.

I have no doubt that we get some sun scald on trees from the sun shining on them during a particularly rapid period of spring growth. As I said, I have no reason to doubt so much good research on the subject, done by people much smarter, and better educated, than I. However, as I mentioned, most of those people don’t live in areas with our kind of summer time sun. I don’t know about you, but when the sun is out to about nine o’clock at night, and the temperatures are in the hundred degree range, I cook. Not only do I cook, but so do parts of trees, that are not necessarily meant to be exposed to sunlight. Leaves and the small structure that supports them, at the outer parts of a trees canopy are meant to have the sun shining directly on them. Heck, gathering all the sunlight they can is a leaf’s reason for being, but that’s not so for the larger branching structure and trunks. For the most part, in a healthy tree, those parts should be in the shade, or at least in partial

shade.

Cambium is the living area of a tree, where most of the growing and movement of materials (both up and down) in a living tree takes place. When the cambium is killed, the bark no longer has an attachment to the tree, and the wood beneath the cambium, which will also be dead, will be exposed to invasive organisms. The death of the cambium is not visible, but the bark loosening and/or dropping away, and various fungi and insects moving in, is.

When we are looking at sun scald, loose bark, fungi, and insects, are the visible signs of it.

Over the years, I’ve noticed a lot of our West Texas trees with sun scald symptoms where I’m pretty sure the damage was done by our summer time West Texas sun, not by spring time sun exposure. The afternoon and evening sun gets pretty intense around here in June, July, and August, and what I’ve observed over the years is that even mature trees can be damaged by it if they get enough exposure to it.

A good example is when a tree’s canopy has been over-pruned, and suddenly the big upper branches are getting direct sunshine that they previously didn’t get.

I’ve seen some amazingly big, tough looking, branches which are just fried all along their tops in instances such as this.

One thing about West Texas, with a sun harsh enough to damage branches and trunks, the shade a tree puts out isn’t just important to the tree owner, it’s also important to the tree. Sun scald from summer sun, versus from spring time sun, may be something fairly unique to just the areas that get that much hot summer sun, but since we are one of those areas, it’s something to keep in mind when tending to your trees.

BY COACH NICHOLS October 11, 2018 - The Anson Tiger JV traveled to Merkel yesterday afternoon and came away with a 16-8 victory. The win moved the Tigers to 2-1 in district play.

The Tigers will be hosting the Coleman Bluecats next Thursday the 18th in Anson.

Highlights of the game: The Tiger defense was spectacular all day yesterday. The Tiger defense forced three Badger turnovers. Gavin Williams and Chris Lynn had big interceptions for the Tigers. Mason Hagler had a huge fumble recovery for the Tigers as well. The Tiger defense was led by Devin Thomson who had 4 tackles for loss and also recorded 2 sacks. Also, playing well for the Tigers were Levi Lozano, Mason Hagler, Jacob Garza, Riley Pippen, Max Hagler, Caleb Moreno, James Merickle, Ethan Doby and Colton Dollar. The scoring started for the Tigers when Riley Pippen ran the ball across the goal line from 4 yards deep. James Merickle caught the two point conversion pass from Mason Hagler to make the score 8-0 Tigers. After the Badgers tied the game right before half the Tigers came out and scored in the third quarter when Pippen broke free again and got in from 11 yards out. This time, Mason Hagler ran the two point conversion in for the final points of the night. The Tiger defense stopped the Badgers twice with the ball deep in Tiger territory to preserve the victory.

GLITTER BOMB: By Laura Childs The gigantic Mardi Gras float towers above the crowds on New Orleans’ Royal Street in the French Quarter. This year’s Pluvius Parade float features a large Neptune head showering glitter over the parade route. It begins to careen wildly before shuttering to a stop in front of Carmela Bertrand’s scrapbook and graphic design shop. A downpour of glitter erupts as the head of Neptune explodes. Krewe members riding the float are blown into the air, tumbling onto the bystanders. Carmela’s exhusband, Shamus, is dazed, but otherwise unhurt. The body of Hughes Wilder, the CEO of a failing hedge fund, is found in the debris covered in glitter. The police discover bomb fragments and list his death as a homicide. Was this a horrible accident, or was he the intended victim?

Shamus, having lost several million dollars through an unwise investment in Wilder’s hedge fund, is a prime suspect. He begs Carmela and her friend, Ava, to investigate.

30 Days…

The Lord Jesus before ascending into Heaven encouraged His followers “to go and make disciples of all nations” (Matt. 28:19).

As we read this today and we look back in history, I think it’s safe to say that the disciples were obedient to God’s Commission. It’s because of their obedience and faith in the midst of extreme persecution that we have the faith that we have today (Eph. 2:20). So the question arises, was the Great Commission just for the followers of Jesus during the 1st century or is it still our command from Heaven today?

I think it’s real easy to say and talk about spreading God’s Word, but it’s a completely different scenario when we actually step out and do it. The apostles gave us a great example to follow and we are called to follow that example of faith (Heb. 13:7).

One aspect that the early followers of Christ carried with them while evangelizing the Good News among the people is that they had a great urgency about the Gospel message. While in a Bible study the other night with a group of friends this word came up and it hasn’t left my thoughts since.

Urgency… How could the early apostles spread the Good News in the way that they did and during the time of persecution that they faced. For one they had the greatest power of all and that’s the Sprit of Christ, the Great Advocate, going before them in boldness and truth. But also I believe they had a great sense of urgency for the Gospel and for those to hear and become saved. In other words, they thought Jesus Christ of Nazareth was coming back for His Church tomorrow and they needed to rush out in the highways and the byways (Luke 14:23) in order that all might hear the way to

salvation.

Jesus is indeed coming back soon. Yes, they thought that then and we should think it now. But like I always say, either way our individual world is coming to an end each day. Whether Jesus comes back in our lifetime or not, the time that we do have should be spent spreading the Truth about Jesus and telling the people of this world the way to the next life.

I like to think about it like this, and I pray I continue on in this way of thinking.

Imagine Jesus Christ the Son of God just came to you and told you that you had 30 days before He was coming back. First off that would be amazing, secondly I believe all of your lives would take a dramatic change. All of sudden we would share the same urgency that the early followers of Christ had for the message that saves. This was their way of thinking and I truly believe ours in the 21st century should be no different.

Now I’m not saying go quit your job and paint a sign about Jesus. If the Lord directs you to do that, well then, go do it and do it with great faith. But what I am saying is that if we as Christians could somehow think in this sense of urgency about the way to Heaven, then I think it would definitely change our attitudes toward evangelism. Because at the end of the day, every one of us will die in this present body that we now have (2 Cor. 5:1), people need to know what is next… For those who trust Jesus as LORD there is a beautiful paradise waiting on the other side.

And for those who do not trust Jesus they will have to face the wrath of God that is to come. People need to hear truth and they can only hear truth if you and me choose to be obedient

to the Great Commission (Rom. 10:14).

I’ll be the first to admit that even while writing this I am convicted of times when I have failed to spread the Gospel to those in need. Sometimes it’s hard, we might feel that we will make someone unhappy or uncomfortable or we might think that we will be looked at differently. These are all common thoughts that come upon a believer when sharing the Good News of Christ. However, we must never forget that “we are not fighting against flesh and blood but against the spiritual forces of evil” (Eph. 6:12). Satan simply does not want us to tell others about Jesus. He will do everything he possibly can in order to keep us from sharing the Good News. The quicker we realize that the enemy is the one placing fear in our hearts the easier it will become to overcome that fear and step out in faith.

Jesus encourages us to love one another (John 13:34). And the greatest act of love is sharing the way to salvation with someone.

If we truly love someone we wouldn’t keep the way to Heaven a secret. No, we would express our love by caring for them enough to tell them about Jesus Christ and how He alone is the one true way to paradise.

Approach the days to come with a “30 day rapture” approach and you might find a little urgency in your Christian walk this week!

Weather or Not For those of you out there that were tired of the warm weather and longed for the cooler days, you got your wish and then some ,as we have seen fall hit us like a ton of bricks! As I am writing this, the North wind has been blowing bringing with it the aftereffects of Hurricane Michael with a temperature hovering around 45 degrees and a forecast the next day where we would be lucky if it hit 40 degrees for a high. The temperature has dropped so much that snow was actually reported in Will McClure Amarillo! I have said it before and I will say it again when I say that it is just so crazy that we go from air conditioners, shorts, and flip-flops to two days later busting out the heaters, coats, and blue jeans; but, that is Texas weather for you. The one sort-of benefit that we did receive was much-needed rainfall, but we did get a lot more than we bargained for with roads once again becoming flooded and even some roads that do not normally flood see water on the road that would cause hydroplaning. I wrote about these kinds of conditions only a few weeks ago, so I am not going to bring them up again as we are still having the problems of drivers trying to outsmart the flooded roads. It’s still going to happen, but I digress.

So, what are my thoughts on this subject this week? I have spoken in the past about trying to combat the weather the best and safest way we know and can do, but no matter how prepared we are, the weather can throw us for a loop on any given day. A day that is forecasted as only a 20% chance of rain could see a major thunderstorm that lasts most of the day while a day that is predicted to be 73 degrees actually climbs up to the nineties. As much as we try to predict the weather and have individuals that work day and night to make sure we have the most up-to-date information, we can still find ourselves facing conditions that we do not expect. For many of us, these conditions can hit in the worst times where we can find ourselves drastically ill-prepared. On the same note, there are so many people out there that do not rely on meteorologists and weather reporting software because “they never get it right” and find themselves in an even worse condition when they try to predict the weather themselves. The truth is that the weather is, and will always be, unpredictable.

There is a lot of good that our weather resources give us and it is constantly improving to let us know when bad weather is about to strike, but we always need to be prepared and aware of these things so that when the weather does hit unexpectedly, we can be better prepared. While it is easier to prepare in the spring and summer months as that weather can be handled a bit better, it is always the fall and winter months where we need to be on our guard. Take for example the bad ice storm that we received last year. Some schools actually went into session as normal, but when the sleet started falling and sticking, many schools like the one I was at last year quickly called it a day and got students and teachers home as soon as possible.

We didn’t know how bad it would get, but preparedness helped keep everyone safe. So, whether it be stocking up with nonperishable food early, buying and getting out warmer clothing in anticipation or dusting off the heater for later use, we need to be ready for whatever Mother Nature throws at us because we need to be ready, weather or not.

Stop Smoing Through Hypnosis I quit smoking in 1986 because I wanted to do something personal to celebrate the Texas Sesquicentennial. I never was a big smoker, never smoked a pack a day except that one night in Monterrey, Mexico where I attended summer school after my junior year in college. That night I smoked a whole pack of Raleighs. Just by myself in the garden and patio of the house where I stayed.

Crazy. I hadn’t smoked at all for a solid year before that night.

I had to take a quit smoking course to end my love affair with cigarettes. It cost $180, which at the time was 6 months of smokes. I was the only one in the class of 15 that quit. But I wanted to get my money’s worth.

The thing that helped me the most was a little card that came with the course. It read: “The urge to smoke a cigarette will go away whether or not you smoke a cigarette.”

Every time I had the urge, I pulled out that card. I

haven’t had the urge since January 5, 1986.

Don Warren has become a friend of mine. He is a hypnotist and entertains all over the country making people laugh, cry, do silly things to the amusement of the audience. Six years ago he started using his hypnosis to make people stop smoking.

“Almost all of my clients have smoked over 50 years. They can stop in one 2-hour session in my office in Weatherford. It’s the North Texas Non-Smoking Center. But they really have to want to quit. I do one on one sessions, no groups.

“Hypnotists around the world tell me when they do a group session about 30% of the people quit smoking. My average is 97%, which is not high enough for me. I want to

be 100%. I have them watch a 45-minute video to convince them they are addicted to the habit, not the nicotine.

That’s eliminating that habit. And the farther away you can push that habit, another habit takes its place: the habit of not smoking.

“I have a form they fill out that tells me when they smoke, how many cigarettes they smoke per day and some other stuff about their habit. Some people come in expecting a quick miracle cure, expecting a tap on the head

will cure them. It doesn’t work that way. You have to buy into it and accept the things I’m going to have you do.”

He charges $595 if you pay it out over a 3-month period, $495 if you pay it all at once.

“People say they can’t afford it. But they can afford to buy those cigarettes. If you smoke 2 packs a day that’s $10 a day, $300 a month.”

He uses no pills, no patch. Some clients say he has a gift.

“To be able to help people change things in their lives means something to me. Nearly half a million people a year die from smoking. I want everybody who walks in my office to walk out a non-smoker and never smoke again.”

After the verdict was read Compton’s demeanor changed. Before the verdict, he usually sat up with his elbows on the chair arms with his right hand up to his face and looking at the table or what his attorneys were doing.

After hearing the verdict, he slumped in his chair, lightly rubbed his eyes or his eyebrows and looked down into his lap.

Witness testimony, evidence, exhibits, questions and final arguments were presented by the prosecution and the defense in seven days over a twoweek period. Patrick Roach was the Food Manager on July 16, 2016 at the Robertson Unit. Roach testified that the first time he took inmates to get items from the dry storage room, he went in and Compton jumped up from behind the desk. Roach stated he didn’t see Johnson and told Compton to get out.

Johnson had not been seen in thirty to forty minutes and a search began. Roach went back to the dry storage room and found her on the floor handcuffed to a metal pallet on the floor. He stated he said, “Johnson, you ok, can you hear me?” before he nudged her.

There was no reaction and he called for help. He stated he thought she was dead. Roach called for help and gave instructions for the inmates to be held in the cafeteria. He told Lt. Johnson that he had seen Compton in the storage room before. Roach became emotional during his telling of events. He stated he still feels guilty because he was the one who sent her to that storage room to get bags.

Lieutenant John Johnson was over the general population at the Robertson Unity on July 16, 2016. He stated that the unit was on lockdown and the kitchen workers were making sandwiches and

bagging them up for the inmates. He stated that when Roach called him, he sounded disturbed. Lt. Johnson stated it took 2-3 minutes for him to get to the kitchen and when he arrived a nurse was doing CPR on Mari Johnson. Lt. Johnson became emotional when he testified that Johnson was badly beaten and he saw red marks on her throat and around her face.

The forensic experts called were Laura Baker, Ph.D, Dr. Dana Austin, and Dr. Tasha Greenberg, MD, Medical Examiner for Tarrant County. Baker went over, in detail, the DNA found on Compton’s and Johnson’s clothing. Compton’s DNA was found under Johnson’s fingernails. Compton’s DNA was present at many points of contact on Johnson’s body.

On cross, the Defense was unable to cast doubt on the DNA testing process or the results.

Austin gave details of the nature of the injuries to Johnson’s neck. It was her expert opinion that Johnson was subject to manual strangulation more than one time. The Thyroid and Carotid Cartilage were fractured. She stated she has not seen a Carotid Cartilage fractured on both sides in her 22 years of practice. The Larynx was crushed and the Hyoid bone was completely fractured in two places.

Johnson’s throat was crushed from the base of the tongue down through the Adam’s apple down to the clavicle.

The ME, Greenberg, stated that asphyxia with blunt force trauma was how Johnson died and the cause of death was homicide. The blunt force trauma was in the form of abrasions (scrapes) and contusions (bruises). She stated it takes 30 lbs. of force to crush/depress the trachea or general airway.

gave to law enforcement officers. Compton had scratches behind his ear and on his neck, which were consistent with the DNA found under Johnson’s finger nails. The first time Compton was asked about the scratches, he told another inmate he got them when he had a haircut. The second time, in an interview, he stated he got them when he was pushed up against a fence outside.

The third rendition, also in an interview, he said he got them while involved in horseplay with another inmate.

The inconsistencies surrounding his alleged relationship and sexual encounters with Johnson finally appeared to be the scenario he thought up in order to make his vicious act of murder not worth the death penalty. There has been no proof that Compton and Johnson had a consensual relationship or affair, sexual or otherwise.

Next in this bifurcated (two part) trial is the Punishment phase. It began on Tuesday, October 16, 2018 with emotional testimony of two of Mari Johnson’s sons. They painted a picture of a loving mother and grandmother who will be missed by many friends and family. At press time this part of the trial continues.
