‘Tis the Season for Christmas Movies

BY KAY SPEARS Do you have favorite Christmas movies you watch every year? We live in such a great time, we can put a movie in the DVD player or watch one online or Netflix or Hulu or, or, or. There are several movies not many people watch because they don’t know about them. Let me introduce you to them.

Miracle on 34th Street from 1947 is worth watching in the original black and white. It’s a great movie to begin the season with on Thanksgiving. It begins with the Macy’s Day Parade and takes us to Christmas with a skeptical little girl who meets the real Santa.

Niven. Imagine Cary Grant as an angel come to earth to answer a preacher’s prayer but no one knows he’s an angel except the clergyman. The preacher prayed for guidance, however he gets more than he bargained for from the handsome angel.

On Monday, December 3, 2018 the regular meeting of the Stamford City Council was opened, and the invocation was given by Mayor James Decker before the Pledge of Allegiance was recited. In attendance were City Mgr. Alan Plumlee, City Atty. Raymond Hollabaugh, City Secretary Kim Bryant, CFO Karen Lou Graham, Melinda Smith, Ken Roberson, Jimmy Doan, Paul Wright and Police Chief Darwin Huston. There were no Citizen’s Comments at this time and the minutes from the November 19, 2018 Regular Council Meeting were approved. First item covered on the agenda was for the Council to consider a bid for entity property located at 710 S. Swenson St, Lot 6, Block 1, Hannah Southside Addition, to the Town of Stamford, Jones County, Texas (R28671) from Penny L. Taylor. The bid of $5,000 was approved.

Mayor Decker then introduced the City Council Workshop to discuss goals & priority issues for the 2019 calendar year. He stated that many years ago workshops were conducted that included items beyond the budget. He stated he would like to reprise these workshops with this one being the first.

HELLO FROM COWBOY COUNTRY

(Forgive me, but this is a rerun from last year, but it is so fun, I had to share again. Enjoy!)

Christmas, the most WONDERFUL time of the year! I have to force myself not to put up my tree until after Thanksgiving, (but I secretly begin listening to Christmas music right after Halloween). Being a history nut, I was really interested in some of our traditions we celebrate at Christmas, so I did research on the emergence of Christmas in America, the South, and more specifically Texas, and what I found out was really interesting. So, buckle up, hang on, because this sleigh is about to take off! (I can literally see my friends’ eyes rolling.)

In history class, we studied “Hot Dates”. These are dates that you must know for American History. The first Hot Date for our Christmas history lesson was 1607. This was the founding of Jamestown Colony, the first permanent English colony in North America. Captain John Smith (you remember him, Pocahontas saved him from having his head chopped off by her daddy), he noted in his diary on Christmas Day that, “Christmas was enjoyed by all and passed without incident.” Exciting, right? Well, to put some context to this, they more than likely did not have a tree, gifts, caroling, or even food. You see, those first few winters the settlers were starving to death. So, to not have another person die on Christmas was something to be thankful for.

The next Hot Date is 1620. This is when the Pilgrims made their way to America and landed at Plymouth, Massachusetts.

What a lot of people may not be aware of, is that their true destination was Virginia where there was already a colony (remember Jamestown), but they were blown off course by many storms. The Pilgrims came

here to escape religious persecution in England and Christmas was not to be celebrated but revered.

Instead of their normal two or three-hour sermon, you and your family would be expected to be in church for most of the day. In fact, Massachusetts colony was founded as a religious colony, and between the years of 1659 and 1681, Christmas celebrating was outlawed. The statute read, “Anyone exhibiting the Christmas spirit would be fined 5 shillings.”

As America emerged as its own country, we see these colonies combine as states belonging to one nation. Not all these colonies had been established for religious reasons, therefore Christmas Day was not observed as a national holiday until 1870. In fact, Congress was in session on December 25, 1789! As our American history progressed, and the North and South bickered and disagreed about many things, it should come as no surprise that how Christmas should be celebrated would be among those disputes. The North felt that Christmas was holy, a day to spend in prayer, and to celebrate it was a sin. The South, well we are always looking for a reason to party, considered Christmas as a big part of their social season. Geography had a hand in this as well, the North was more populated, so it was easier for people to visit regularly, but in the South, people were separated by days of travel, so when they had an excuse to get together, they may stay for a while.

Christmas gave them that excuse.

During the Civil War, Christmas was even used as a war tactic. To help demoralize the southern troops and their families, and hopefully put a faster end to this horrible atrocity, President Lincoln commissioned a drawing of Santa visiting and giving Christ-

mas gifts to Union soldiers.

This drawing ran in the extremely popular periodical of the day, Harper’s Weekly.

Imagine being a child and seeing that picture. If your father or relative was a Union soldier, it would fill you with pride; however, if your father was a Confederate soldier it might shake your naïve resolve of being on the “right side” because Santa was not visiting the Confederate army. This was one of the first examples of psychological warfare used on a wide scale in the media in America.

After the Civil War, when the country was trying to put itself back together, traditions that were used all over America began to spread through women magazines that would publish decorating and baking ideas, and through children’s books.

As we look at Christmas in Texas, we must begin with the Spanish. The Spanish were in Texas in 1599. They established a chain of forts and converted the Indians (whether they wanted to or not) to Catholicism. Every year in December, they would celebrate “Christ’s Mass” and use the Native Americans to re-enact the Nativity story.

As Anglo-Americans began to pour into Texas, they were forced (yes, it was in their immigration contract) to follow all the practices and teachings of the Catholic church, including its Christmas traditions. These settlers were 2nd or 3rd generation descendants of immigrants from northern and central Europe and hailed most recently from the agricultural South. They brought their own Christmas traditions which included, but not limited to: drinking, dancing, singing, feasting, and making joyful noises (which usually included shooting, gunpowder, and loud singing!) Some traditions never change.

When Texas broke with Mexico in 1836, Christmas took on a more secular tone with parties, balls (dances), and huge dinners. By 1836,

Texas also saw more German immigrants begin to settle in this lovely state and they brought a very unique Christmas tradition – the Christmas Tree! Since a lot of Texas is very scarce on trees, alternatives were used, such as tumbleweeds, mesquite trees, and juniper or cedar trees. And if a tree that was small enough could not be found, a branch might be brought in and decorated. Decorating the tree included whatever was around at the time. It might include items such as bits of ribbon, yarn, berries, popcorn, cotton bolls, paper strings, and homemade decorations.

Gifts were a lot smaller and were more on the practical scale. Gifts might also be made with whatever was around and was a chance for someone to use their skill to create something for a loved one. Gifts might include corn husk dolls, sachets of sweet-smelling herbs, carved wooden toys, embroidered pillow cases, pillows, handkerchiefs, or footstools. Practical items could include knitted scarves, hats, mitts, or socks. Stockings were literally socks hung up that would be filled with nuts, oranges, apples, candies, small gifts, cookies, and fruits that were in season.

When I was little, my grandmother had stockings for us at her house. She always filled them with fruit and nuts. I never understood

why, until I researched this tradition. This was her way of sharing a tradition with her grandchildren that she enjoyed as a child.

I read an account about some cowboys working cows far from headquarters and the chuck wagon cook told them to take a couple of days and hunt for a Christmas feast. He boasted he could cook anything.

This particular cowboy said they enjoyed the following meats that Christmas Day, “turkey, duck, prairie chicken, deer, prairie-dog, possum, bacon, and even rattlesnake.” But he said the old cook drew the line when a cowboy brought in a skunk to be skinned and cooked! Christmas meals in Texas usually included lots of items made with corn meal, such as corn pone and cornbread.

There are lots of cultural influences concerning a Texas Christmas. Cowboy influences include dances (like the famous Cowboy Christmas Ball in Anson that dates back to 1885) and changing reindeer to long-horns or white tail deer. Spanish/Mexican influences include poinsettias, piñatas, Midnight Mass, Nativity pageantry, and great foods like beans, tamales and menudo.

German heritage brought us the Christmas Tree, the advent wreath, “Kris Kringle”, mistletoe, Christmas Candlelight Services, and such Christmas songs

as “O Christmas Tree” and “Silent Night”. African American heritage brought us the Christmas Gift, good ol’ southern cooking such as sweet potato pie and cornbread, and the Ethiopian holiday of Kwanza.

British culture is evident when we celebrate the 12 Days of Christmas, the Yule log, Wassail, and Mincemeat pie. And finally, the Czechs gave us carolers, kolaches, gingerbread men, and polkas. These are just a few cultural influences that we have, but there are still the Irish, the Swedes, the Polish, and lots of other nationalities that are a part of this great melting pot we call home!

I just love that even though we might not biologically belong to a certain ethnic group, we can enjoy and embrace the varying customs and traditions that make Christmas unforgettable. ESSAYS FROM WEST OF 98 James M. Decker

An Outward Expression of Christmas Last week, I wrote about the seemingly inevitable stress, exhaustion, and annoyance of the Christmas season. I encouraged each of us to focus on hope—the hope provided by the birth of Jesus Christ and the hope that we can find in our own lives. In his classic song “If We Make It Through December,” Merle Haggard has very few obvious reasons for hope, but he still has hope all the same. If he can find hope, in the context of that song, we too can find hope in our lives.

On my mind today is how we can actually express that hope that underlies Christmas. How can we end the cycle of holiday stress, exhaustion, and annoyance? It shouldn’t have to be inevitable. We shouldn’t have to fight it. We shouldn’t have to find reasons to take a step back and escape it. It’s easy to blame “society” for the commercialization of Christmas and encouraging obsession in pursuit of holiday perfection. But society is a “we,” not a “they.” Even if we are but a tiny fraction of society, we’re still part of the society that creates and exacerbates those feelings in each of us. We can’t and shouldn’t wait on “them” to improve society, we must look for ways that “we” can improve society.

We can and should start in our own homes and communities. This goes even beyond my encouragement last week to worry less about trying to provide the perfect Christmas for friends, family, or community. For many in our communities, perfection in Christmas isn’t even a consideration. For numerous reasons, folks are merely trying to survive Christmas.

Christmas is expensive.

The cost of Christmas gifts, trees and ornaments, maybe even a few outside decorations and lights, is staggering. That’s before we get to the cost of a Christmas dinner for a family.

For families living from paycheck to paycheck, it’s an impossible task that results in greater financial hardship—credit card debt or high-interest short-term loans—or simply doing without.

However, struggling for survival at Christmas crosses socioeconomic lines. It touches every demographic in our community. Many of our family, friends, and neighbors will face their first Christmas without a loved one, whether parent, spouse, sibling, child, or otherwise. Without that person, the holidays can go on, but they will never be the same. For others, it is not the first Christmas without a loved one, but the second, third, or tenth without them is still difficult.

Some may have strained or distant relationships with family, so the concept of being “together” at Christmas simply doesn’t exist.

Others are already struggling with depression and other mental health issues.

The pressures associated with the holidays—obligations for family, friends, work, church, and community—can be completely overwhelming. There’s a reason why mental health concerns become bigger during the holidays. Too many of our friends and family are not sure if they CAN make it through December. Do we even realize that?

Last year, I wrote about Stamford’s Christmas Day Dinner. This year, for the 31st year, we’ll serve fellowship and a full Christmas dinner to anyone and everyone who desires it.

Some come out of need for a hot meal. Others come to avoid loneliness. Many simply desire the good community-wide fellowship. Last year, over 700 people were served with the simple mission that, no matter your lot in life, you shouldn’t have to be alone on Christmas Day. With three weeks before

Christmas, there are many opportunities for us to improve the Christmas season by changing our own piece of society.

It doesn’t require a large event serving a meal to your community. It may be as simple as taking an evening to spend ome time with an older neighbor. It might mean a quick trip to Walmart to purchase a toy for a local toy drive. It might be pressing a $10 bill into the hand of a clearlystruggling mother doing her shopping at the store one day.

Whatever the case may be, I hope and pray that each of us will look across our community, at familiar faces and strangers, and find a way to make Christmas something happy, not merely a struggle for survival.

The minutes were read and treasurer’s report given. No reports from any of the committees. Reported on the sick list were Corene Lowack and Clancy Lehrmann, both reported in the hospital. Betty Weise won the door prize. Don and Pat Pyron will be celebrating their 60th wedding anniversary in December.

Following the meeting the group played games and enjoyed a delicious meal of ham and all the trimmings and lots of yummy desserts. The next meeting will be on Sunday, January 6, 2019 and the meal will be chili and stew and desserts.

Thought for the week: “Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine he sees all day.”

6 DECEMBER 7, 2018 While I don’t know if it had something to do with our first freeze of the year being a “shur-nuf” real hard freeze, instead of a brief dip half a degree below the freezing line like it usually is, but the fall color this year has been pretty decent. The sumacs along some of our country roads had a some of the spectacular color they can show, but don’t always obtain. Not only that, but the ornamental pear trees have developed really nice colors, and also held their leaves. One of the things that I’ve noticed over the years, is that ornamental pear trees, which are rated as having “fall color”, usually go ahead and develop that good color, but don’t always hold those leaves very long after they turn.

Since good color isn’t all that spectacular, if it’s laying in the yard or blowing down the street, I consider quick dropping of “color” as something of a drawback. Truthfully, while I certainly appreciate the springtime blooming from the ornamental pears, if I had to pick one or the other, I would take the fall leaf colors over the white spring blooms.

Something else that I noticed this year, which I was not previously aware of, is that apparently smoke trees also have fall color.

I was in a client’s yard today, and we happened to be standing right next to where they have a smoke tree, and its leaves were a nice red color. Giving that smoke tree leaves have a purplish cast during the spring and summer, having them turn red in the fall is just an added bonus.

John Allen Mead, IV On Sunday, December 2, 2018 heaven gained a special angel as John Allen Mead, IV entered his eternal home at the age of 57.

John was born March 8, 1961 in San Angelo, TX to John Allen Mead, III and Willie Jean Brown Mead. He moved from Austin, TX to Stamford on February 6, 2005.

John was friendly and outgoing and loved his friends at Sagebrush and family especially his Aunt Kathy “Khaki” Vinson from Hawley. He enjoyed going to visit her and helping her in the café with the many tasks at a restaurant. John was a huge fan of George Strait and even had the opportunity to meet him at a concert.

John’s dream vacation became a reality when he got to spend a week in Disney World. He loved to compete in Special Olympics and earned his claim to fame when they selected him to be their “Poster Boy”.

John is survived by his dad, John Allen Mead, III of Austin, TX; his mom Jean of Artesia, NM; sister Sherri Pitts of Artesia, NM; brother John David Binkley of Artesia, NM; uncle and aunt, Kenneth and Kathy Vinson of Hawley, TX; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Preceding John in death were his stepdad David Binkley, uncles, Woody Bearden, Donny Bearden and aunt Gloria Bearden.

John’s life was celebrated with graveside services 3:00 p.m., Tuesday, December 4, 2018 at the Hawley Cemetery with Doug Stanley officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home in Stamford, TX. Food Handlers Class Offered The “Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER)” was revised and updated and became effective October 11, 2015. A major change in the revision now requires all food employees to complete an accredited food handlers training program within 60 days of employment, effective September 16, 2016.

Lady Bulldogs Win 4 of 5 at Clay County Classic

The Lady Dawgs competed in the Clay County Classic at Petrolia last weekend winning four of their five games.

They averaged 50 points per game, beating Olney 39-25, Petrolia 55-18, Midway 58-24, and Newcastle 50-42. Their one loss was to Bellevue 59-48. Brooklyn Woodard led the scoring in the tournament for the Lady Dawgs with a combined total of 91 points. Other combined totals were Gracie Oliver 30 points, Bresha Applin 28, Tylee Bevel 21, Kenadee Gann 20 points, Laramie Terrell 19, Citlaly Gutierrez 15, Shandlee Mueller 12, Savanah Gonzales 11, Endia Pryor 2, and Kristian Cantu 1. This brings the Lady Bulldogs season record to 8-3.

BY KAY SPEARS The Board of Directors of the Anson – Jones Museum came together for the regular first Monday of the month meeting on December 3, 2018 at Anson’s City Hall. In attendance were Mary Jo Blankenship, Bettye Sue Foster, Kay Spears, Molly Spraberry and Susan Throckmorton, and Judy Deatherage. Bill and Minnie Carman were unable to attend.

Cody Burleson was available to give an update on the gas leak at the museum.

The leak was in an underground pipe behind the building and was repaired after the gas was turned off. The museum was closed for several weeks in November to take care of the gas leak.

Another item of concern has been the inserts on the new doors installed about three years ago. The intense Texas sun has been blamed for the needed repairs to the adjustable blinds. The door inserts were confirmed to be under warranty and this project has finally been completed.

After a brief pause, the members began thinking of the ramifications of this and decided to table it until the next meeting when all Board Members could be in attendance.

Ideas concerning possible content were discussed and the members were excited about the prospects. The meeting was then adjourned.

Scotty invested his first wife’s money and was able to strike it rich. Now, reportedly worth several million dollars, he refuses to spend any money. Scotty makes his first wife beg each month for her alimony check. His McMansion needs serious repairs. There is even a live-in boarder for extra cash.

Like the Grinch, Scotty hates Christmas! He cut the wiring to his neighbor’s expensive lighted yard display, while another neighbor is upset over things Scotty told the young son about Santa Claus. The Parker’s maid is overworked and underpaid due to Scotty’s blackmail threats.

Jaine Austen and her self-absorbed friend, Lance Venable, are house-sitting for socialite Connie Van Hooten as she travels during the holidays.

will just help enough other people get what they want.”

Advent The time of year we are quickly approaching is a very special time for many different reasons. However, we, as Christians, must never forget the true reason for the season, and that is the celebration of the miracle of God becoming human.

The Incarnation (John 1:14) is the great mystery of the Gospel and is the foundation truth that makes Christ the Savior of the world. Only by becoming human could Jesus bring us to peace with God. The Bible tells us that “there is one God, and there is one mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave himself as a ransom for all, which is the testimony given at the proper time” (1 Tim. 2:5-6).

We, as Christians, should reflect on this great miracle and praise God for making a way of reconciliation through the Messiah (Rom. 5:1). Around many churches this Christmas season, there will be candles lit and Scripture read as we focus in on the great miracle of the manger. The word Advent is a version of the Latin word “coming”. So when we celebrate Advent during the month of December we, as Christians, are focusing in on Jesus’s coming from Heaven to Earth.

We reflect on the Messiah’s First Advent, which took place in the miracle of the Incarnation. But at the

same time we not only reflect on the First Advent of the LORD but we also dial in with eager expectation of the Second Advent of the Messiah. This is a special way that we Christians can remind ourselves of the Divine providence and plan of God throughout history.

It reminds us that we truly are blessed to be a part of God’s family and there are great things to come in the future that we get the opportunity to be a part of.

Jesus’s First Advent was that of a humble lamb. In this, Jesus showed us humans the greatest example of humility and paved the way for each of us to follow in His footsteps. Those footsteps are a hard road to follow at times but in the end we must always remember that when we humble ourselves before the Lord, we will be exalted (James 4:10). This was fully proven in the life of the Messiah, “For though, he was in the form of God, he did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name above every name, so that

at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father” (Phil. 2:6-11).

Christ Jesus from birth to death glorified God by walking in complete humility and submission to the Father’s Will. Christ came in His First Advent as the humble sacrificial Lamb and we read that in His Second Advent He will come as the Lion of the Tribe of Judah who is indeed the King of kings and Lord of lords (Rev. 17:14).

Advent is a great time for believers to focus on the Supremacy of Christ and how God’s Divine plan is being fulfilled through Him. It’s also a great time that we get to not only reflect on the Messiah’s birth but also look forward to His Glorious Kingdom. When we do this it should motivate us and stir us up to be Faithful Ambassadors for God’s Kingdom in this broken world.

This December let’s strive to glorify the King in ways that He truly deserves!

Don’t allow other “things” celebrated this time of the year to overshadow the glorious miracle of the Incarnation of Christ. Seek Jesus above all else and live in a manner that proves that you are ready for the Messiah’s second advent.

On Grieving

I have talked at length in the past about keeping a loved one’s memory alive in your heart, and recently this has rang more true than ever on two different levels with myself from the national mourning of former President George H.W. Bush to a friend of mine losing her grandmother just before Thanksgiving. Grief and mourning hits us in so many different ways where you have so many people posting condolences on social media to the Bush family, Will McClure many of whom have never met any member of the family to the condolences I saw with my friend, especially making sure she was doing fine as her grandmother was in New York. While it was very saddening that she was unable to be with her family, she was at least able to see her grandmother a few weeks before her passing. From what I have known, she did not mourn right away but she had friends surrounding her when it finally hit. I distinctly remember the time when my grandfather passed away almost nine years ago when I got the call. I remember being fine as I got my things together and my dad came to San Angelo to pick me up. He picked me up and we talked normally, making jokes to each other until the reality set in and I began breaking down with the knowledge that my grandfather was no longer with us, but the knowledge that he was reunited with my grandmother in heaven made the grief not as bad. Even though so much time has passed, it still feels like a hole in the heart.

I say this to lead into this quote that I read on Facebook a few days after learning of my friend’s loss. The quote says: “Grief never ends…but it changes. It’s a passage, not a place to stay. Grief is not a sign of weakness, nor a lack of faith…It is the price of love.” I think we can all relate to that quote in some shape or form as there are people we lost that we still miss, even if we lost them when we were just kids. It is the memories that make us feel like grieving all over again, but it does get easier over time. We choose to grieve for those we lost, but the knowledge that they are in a better place makes things better at the end of the day. If anyone says to a person grieving that they need to “suck it up and move on” obviously has never felt that level of pain or never felt the same kind of bond with their loved ones. We grieve for our losses, but also reach out a hand to help or lend a shoulder to cry on for our friends and family that have to deal with loss. It is never fun; it is never easy. However, we can try to make it easier so that is can only be a passage instead of an extended stay.

Grief is not an easy topic to talk about I will admit, but I am sure that many of you have the same thoughts and feelings about handling it. There is no end-all, be-all solution to making grief go away or not come along at all, but anything we can do to make things better for ourselves and others will be a wonderful feeling at the end of the day. Last year, for example, my best friend lost his father and I made sure to call him as soon as possible as well as give him my support during his time of grief by traveling to his hometown for the memorial service. I was not asked or expected, but it was something I knew I had to do and knew that he would have done the same. Grief is not an easy thing, but we need to understand that it will happen. After all, it truly isn’t a sign of weakness, but rather a sign of love.

From Preacher To Storyteller I have several friends who help me find interesting people to interview. My go-to person in Seminole is Leo Copeland, who writes stories for the Seminole Sentinel newspaper.

Leo was born on the county line between Pushmataha and McCurtain counties in Oklahoma. He has some Indian blood. “My mother was part Choctaw, my father Cherokee.” The family moved to Arizona when Leo was 3 because his mother suffered from TB. “I went barefooted all summer when I was growing up. The bottoms of my feet were like leather. When I got goat heads, I’d just scrape my feet on the ground to get rid of them. Never felt a thing.”

Leo had a big brother who excelled in sports. “I didn’t play anything. I can’t walk and chew gum without stumbling.” When he was 15, Leo started picking cotton. “It was hot. One morning it was 101 degrees at 5 o’clock.” Leo didn’t start deer hunting until he was a teenager. “My daddy said guns were not made to point at people. He wouldn’t even allow us to point a cap gun at people.”

After graduating from high school, Leo went to Amarillo and enrolled in a bible college. “I wanted to be an elder in the church,” he says. Apparently that training took. Leo became a preacher in Seminole and was at the pulpit 42 years. When he retired in 2002, someone at the church told him there was an opening at the paper.

He called and made an appointment, asked if they needed a resume. They said no. The editor and publisher interviewed him. “After a while they acted like they were going to hire me and I asked them if I was hired when would I start. The publisher said about 15 minutes.”

When asked what he would write about, Leo said he would like to do a series called Echoes From The Past

and interview elderly people who moved there. “I started off pretty good. My wife had a beauty shop and I cleaned it up every Friday afternoon. I got acquainted with a lady who was the last customer on Friday to get her hair fixed. I asked her if I could interview her. She said fine, but she didn’t think she had anything interesting to say. It turned out she was the first woman sheriff of Gaines County.”

Leo has some historic photographs from early residents of Seminole. “Some of them got here in a covered wagon with their flop-eared mules pulling it. I have pictures of ladies in bonnets and long dresses standing beside the wagon.”

Leo says he has written more than 500 stories. He wrote a book about the seven cities of gold and is working on another book about bear hunting. When the paper hired him, he told the publisher that he had been a preacher 42 years and would not be able to keep spiritual things out of his writings. The publisher said that was OK. Leo said he could have gone somewhere else after he retired, but decided to stay in Seminole.

“It’s my home now. I wouldn’t live anywhere else.” Leo is still active in the church. He is an elder, the position he wanted as a teenager.

Former U.S. President George H.W. Bush Dies Nov. 30

Gov. Greg Abbott on Dec. 1 issued the following statement on the Nov. 30 death of George Herbert Walker Bush, the 41st president of the United States: “The state of Texas mourns with the nation at the passing of one of our greatest presidents. George H.W. Bush was an American hero and icon, he was a friend to all he met, he embodied class and dignity. Texans are genuinely honored that he called the Lone Star State home and we collectively grieve this monumental loss. On behalf of Texas, Cecilia and I offer our thoughts and prayers to the Bush family in their time of need.”

Bush, 94, a Republican, served as the president from 1989 to 1993. He served as vice president from 1981 to 1989 alongside President Ronald Reagan. He served as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, Texas Congressional District 7, from 1967 to 1971, and went on to serve the nation in many other high-level appointed positions.

FUND TRANSFER IS COMPLETED Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar on Nov. 29 announced the transfer of $2.77 billion into the State Highway Fund and the Economic Stabilization (“Rainy Day”) Fund.

Each fund received more than $1.38 billion or 50 percent of the total transfer, Hegar said.

The transfer amounts are based on crude oil and natural gas production tax revenues in excess of 1987 collections. If either tax generates more revenue than the 1987 threshold, an amount equal to 75 percent of the excess is transferred.

In November 2014, voters approved a constitutional amendment allocating at least half of these severance taxes to the Rainy Day Fund, with the remainder going to the SHF for use on non-toll highway construction, maintenance and right-of-way acquisition.

When fiscal 2018 ended on Aug. 31, the Rainy Day Fund balance was $11.04 billion. The new balance of $12.48 billion, not accounting for currently outstanding spending authority, will decline as agencies spend down the remaining appropriation au-

Also, the high balance helps Texas maintain its AAA credit rating. “That’s why I have asked the Legislature to authorize me to invest a portion of the fund in a more prudent and responsible manner and use the returns to address the types of long-term liabilities that have crippled the finances of states such as Illinois and New Jersey. Significant portions of this money have not been keeping up with inflation, and we must not allow the power of this asset to erode over time,” Hegar added.

RETURNS REACH LANDMARK Comptroller Hegar on Nov. 29 announced his office had returned $1 billion in unclaimed property to rightful owners since he took office in January 2015.

“This landmark achievement represents the commitment this office has made to reuniting unclaimed property with its rightful owners,” Hegar said. “I’m proud of the folks in our Unclaimed Property program, and I encourage everyone to go to our website and see if there is money waiting for them.”

About 830,000 claims have been approved while Hegar has been comptroller, he said, and since 2015, the comptroller’s office has redesigned its unclaimed property website and internal systems to make the claims process faster, easier and more efficient.

ClaimitTexas.org allows users to upload claim documentation and is mobile-optimized to make it easier to search for unclaimed property on smartphones and tablets. The state has returned more than $3 billion in unclaimed property to its rightful owners

TAX SCAMMERS TARGET MANY Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on Nov. 26 warned Texans that entities impersonating the Internal Revenue Service are sending fraudulent email messages.

Fraudsters may use the subject line “tax transcripts” in email messages that attempt to bait Texans into opening links and documents that contain malware designed to steal sensitive financial data.

Paxton said the IRS never calls or emails citizens to demand repayment for penalties, and if any citizen receives a fraudulent call or email message they should call the IRS directly at 800-829-1040.

“My office stands ready to assist hard-working Texas consumers. The consumer protection section of our website contains several resources on how to recognize, prevent and report scams like this. Being informed is the best way to prevent fraud and loss,” added Paxton.

MANY MAY PURCHASE UNITS Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush on Nov. 28 announced the Federal Emergency Management Agency granted a program under which Hurricane Harvey survivors still residing in temporary housing units may purchase the federally funded manufactured housing units and travel trailers.

FEMA’s temporary housing assistance is set to expire on Feb. 25, 2019, 18 months after the date of the disaster. Currently, there are 1,582 households in temporary housing units — manufactured housing and travel trailers — administered by the Texas General Land Office.

Counties agreeing to participate in the sales program include Austin, Calhoun, Galveston, Harris, Jasper, Jefferson, Newton, Orange, Polk, San Jacinto, Tyler and Victoria. However, some cities within those counties have opted out of the program.

FEMA approval of the sales program for the housing units “provides Texas communities with one more tool in our recovery toolbox,” Bush said.

He stated he would like the Council and City Staff to participate in discussion style workshops to see what they can prioritize, decision making, allocating of time and to make improvements. “We all sought office and sought the ability to serve to make a difference and I want to give the Council the ability and opportunity to discuss those things, so we can make a difference.” He stated these workshops will be an openended discussion with no action being taken at this time. Today’s workshop is planned to be general, with future workshops and discussions to be more specific.

A handout was available with the core services divided into subjects such as water, sewer, streets, law enforcement, emergency, trash, etc. The quality of life heading includes park & recreation, athletic sports facilities, cultural services and opportunities on growth and development.

Mayor Decker stated, “What we can improve our community for growth moving forward and the living experience while we are here, to make that better.”

The discussion was opened to include items that have already been mentioned in prior Council meetings and wish lists.

One subject was the Library

and the difference between the Library Board and the Carnegie Library Restoration Committee. There may be an opportunity to work with funds from both sources. Another area of discussion was the swimming pool with the bathroom and sandblasting the shallow end like the baby pool was two years ago. An idea came up to investigate the use of chemicals or salt water filtration as an alternative. The next Council Meeting will be Monday, December 17 and the Council Members set aside time at 4pm, before the meeting, to meet at the pool, identify problems and prepare a list of needs.

At Harman Park, the drainage problem issue was brought up as a safety concern for children playing there and the need to repair the “bug” will require a welder. Also looked at were area cemeteries and the need to clean them up and then maintain them.

Discussed was the lake dock and different options to make improvements.

Another project on the wish list is a new facility for the police, fire and EMS to use.

Different aspects of the project are being examined.

The City Manager updated the Council on obtaining a used dump truck. Then demolition projects were also discussed and

the need to finish up what has already begun. This led to the subject of junk cars, cars parked in yards, city ordinances and code enforcement. The process to file a complaint is to call the police department and let them know about the problem.

The next item was the City Manager’s Report. Alan Plumlee, City Mgr. gave an update concerning repairing water leaks. Waste

water employees are being trained and licensed. There was a discussion concerning a newly purchased property which does not have access to water/sewer and options the new owner may have. A prior item was discussed concerning Mr. Davis leasing the property instead of buying it. An update was given about the Water Treatment project and the meeting was then adjourned.

MOVIE: Continued From Page 1 She stars with Lee Majors in this movie that is loosely based on Snow White & the Seven Dwarfs. It is magical. I have looked for the soundtrack for many years, but I don’t think it exists. I taped it on VHS back in 1986 and zoomed through the commercials for years, until it came out on DVD. It is an unsung gem.

A Christmas Carol is worth viewing, it is a wonderful story by Charles Dickens. My favorite is the 1938 version from England staring Reginald Owen with Patrick Stewart (1999) and Mickey’s Christmas Carol tying for second place.

Of course, It isn’t Christmas without Home Alone and Home Alone 2 for a few laughs and It’s a Wonderful Life and White Christmas are in my Christmas movie box. You might also try the movie that introduced the song White Christmas. That movie is Holliday Inn with Bing Crosby and Fred Astaire.

Some of the newer Christmas movies look tempting, I may give one or two a try this year. I guess I like to watch my old favorites, I like the way they feel and that is usually the reason we watch movies more than once or twice anyway.
