Museum Addresses City Council During Regular Meeting BY WILL MCCLURE The Stamford City Council held its regular meeting last Monday evening, December 18th, to hear a presentation from the Cowboy Country Museum as well as an update on water contract bids from Enprotech. Mayor Johnny Anders called the meeting to order at 5:15 pm with all members present and asked Councilmember Ken Roberson to lead the invocation. After the Pledge of Allegiance, Anders opened the meeting to citizen’s comments. With there being none that evening, the meeting moved forward

with the approval of the minutes of the special called meeting and subsequent addendum from December 4th. Once this was complete, Anders turned the meeting over to Scott Hay of Enprotec to present and award a construction contract for the city’s new raw water pipeline from Lake Stamford to the water treatment plant. Hay began his presentation by informing the council that 12 bids were received during the bid meeting held at City Hall last month. The bids placed involved two different pipe materials and were split into a base

bid for polyvinylchloride (PVC) and an alternative bid for the high-density polyethylene (HDPE) pipe. Of the bids placed, the lowest for the PVC base pipe bid was given by MH Civil Constructors, Inc. of Amarillo, TX with a bid of $5,512,000 while the alternative HDPE bid was given by Nelson Lewis, Inc. of Marble Falls, TX in the amount of $5,878,280. SEE COUNCIL, PG 6

Scott Hay of Enprotec addressed the Stamford City Council Monday evening about awarding the bid for construction of the raw water line from Lake Stamford to the water treatment plant to MH Civil Construction, which will lay down a new PVC pipe at a lower projected cost to the project’s budget.

THE NEW STAMFORD AMERICAN

HELLO FROM COWBOY COUNTRY By Jewellee Kuenstler It is no secret that I love spending time with old things (like my husband for instance, don’t tell him!) I love to immerse myself in history, to see how they lived in the old days. But we all must be careful of falling into the trap of nostalgia. Things always seem better in the “good old days”, but were they really? I often have people visit the museum and while admiring a photograph of the Stamford square in the 1920s, I hear it said over and over, “I wish Stamford was like that again.” Yes, the lawn on the square was very manicured, the town was busy, there were no vacant stores on the square. But it is important to remember that if you dig a little deeper, things might not have been as rosy as we think. For example, when we look at the 1920’s picture of the square, really look, do we see the diversity in the people that we do today. Remember in those days, everything was segregated. If you were of a minority, you were not allowed in certain stores, to drink from certain water fountains, or to use the same “public” bathrooms. I much prefer to walk along the square and see the diversity of people that live in our town today, versus the very segregated past. Another item of note, would be the rights of women. Women got the right to vote in 1920, but it would take a lot longer for women’s roles to change significantly. A woman’s place was in the home, cooking, cleaning, and caring for the children. A man’s place was with his job, providing for his family. It was not seemly for a woman to have a career. Yes, many women did have jobs, but these were out of necessity, not out of a sense of using her own skills to advance her position in life. And the clothes! I love watching old 1940s movies, the people look so elegant in their dresses,

men never removing their jackets, etc. But the reality is we live in West Texas, where the temperature is usually very warm. I love the freedom to choose if I want to wear shorts on a day that tops 100 degrees. Or a man being allowed to remove his jacket when he gets uncomfortable without causing a scandal. And, heaven forbid, if we forget about little things like, indoor plumbing, air conditioning, good deodorant and frequent bathing. I am so thankful that I do not have to run across the yard in the middle of the night, open a door to a small shack, that may be home to spiders or rattlesnakes, and use the restroom. Indoor plumbing is a convenience I do not think I could do without. I panic the few times that I turn on the faucet to find that the water has been turned off due to a water leak. Air conditioning! Miracle of modern living. It can be 105 degrees outside, and I’m at a cool 72 degrees in my house. Heaven help us if our air conditioning should go out during the summer. While waiting for the repair man, we either go stay in a motel or with relatives, because it is just too hot to sleep in the house. How spoilt are we! Those great days in early Stamford were spent sweating and sleeping on the porch because the house was too hot, or cooking in the kitchen which sometimes required building a fire in the stove on those hot summer days. Maybe it was due to my time teaching, but body odor can turn my stomach. Now don’t get me wrong, I grew up in a farming family, where working up a good sweat was a sign that you were working. Sweat, fresh dirt, leather, those smells bring back fond memories, but body odor does not! My grandfather tells that when he was young in the late 1920s, early 1930s, his family of five, bathed once a week on

Friday night, before going to town (Stamford) on Saturday. Because they did not have indoor plumbing, they would warm water for a bath with pots on the stove and all five family members would use the same water. My grandfather said that since he was always the dirtiest, he would go last and the water was no longer clean. The thought of that just makes my skin crawl. Today, we bathe every day and sometimes more than once a day. I wrote a couple of weeks ago about cotton season and how it brings back fond memories. Yet, those are the memories we choose to think back on fondly. I also remember, shredding stalks in an open cab tractor and it being so cold, that if a stalk was to hit your ear, the sting was almost more than you could bear! Or the years spent hoeing cotton in blistering heat, or servicing a tractor in the early morning when it was so cold, you could hardly make your fingers work. No, I really do not wish to revisit those days. Don’t get me wrong, good hard work never hurt anyone, but the modern conveniences we have at our disposal today, are wonderful! And finally, not to get too political, but we naively think that government and politicians were more wholesome in those days. I hear on the news stations quite often that we are a nation in crisis, the worst it’s ever been, etc. Before you get too upset and think that “the good ol’ days” had no scandals, then I suggest you go back and re-read some of your history. The Red Scare, yellow journalism, the mob-like mentality of Joe Kennedy and his son Jack, a cane beating between two congressmen on the Senate floor, a vice president killing a secretary of the treasury in a duel, the list goes on and on. Social media and momentby-moment coverage of events unfolding around

the world is one of those conveniences that we cannot seem to live without. But it has also made us a global community as well as being extremely transparent. We just see more of what has been around for a very long time. Doesn’t make it right, but it does not mean it is worse. We just “know” more, the good and the bad. Have you heard the quote, “History is written by the victors!” Just like most of our own memories are focused on fond events that happened in our life, it definitely does not mean that nothing bad happened to us either. However, sometimes it is those scandalous items that make history a little more fun, or to see how bad something was and see the strides that have been made to improve an area, can give the next generation inspiration to try hard as well. Myself, well I’ve visited a lot of places, not as many as some, but more than others, and as much as I like a good adventure, coming home is always sweet. We have it pretty good. When my father passed away in October, the outpouring of love from people was overwhelming, and I know this happens on a daily basis in our town. If we want to change something, the first thing we need to do is change ourselves and our attitudes. I’m just as guilty. I hear things in town that someone needs to do something about this or that. Well, what if you are the person that could help our town by being the person that led others to do something about this or that. People love to complain, but not always take it to the proper channels or the right ears to get something changed. So, I encourage you to be the victors that write the future history of Stamford! (Is “future history” even grammatically correct?) Let exhibits in the museum, five or ten years down the

road, show that our town was dwindling, but the citizens rallied together and look at what they accomplished to make it better. It could be something as small as picking up trash you might see as you go to the post office, or a group taking over the lawn on the square. We can write our own history, so let’s make it a positive one. The Art Social that we had in the museum on Thursday, December 14th, was very encouraging. Thank you to everyone that took the time to come by

and see our new piece of art. And if you haven’t seen our new acquisition, stop by and we will be happy to show it off. (We’re kinda proud of it, can you tell?) Thanks to the volunteers we had working and the donations of cookies. This is what I am referring to, the townspeople saw a need and stepped up to help! Thank you. As always, we love for you to stop by, either to volunteer, or just to visit. Remember, we are open Tuesday through Friday, 12:30 to 5:30!

With an available budget of $6,067,000 for the project, Hay recommended to the council accept the bid given by MH Civil Construction as the difference in cost of the bids ($915,000 under budget for PVC vs. $188,720 for HDPE) could justify the city going with PVC pipe which, although not at the same higher quality as HDPE pipe, was still a great quality product for a lesser value. This would allow the water development project to use the extra funds as contingency in other phases of the project and, if the funds are not required in any other area of the project, could be used in the best interest of the city. After explaining the difference in the pipes in more detail to the council as well as giving a positive background on the construction company, the council decided unanimously to award the winning bid to MH Civil Construction to install a raw water line mad of PVC pipe. The meeting then was turned over to Cowboy Country Museum Director Luci Wedeking and Museum Coordinator Jewelee Kuenstler to give a presentation on museum operations as well as past and future events. Kuenstler began the presentation by stating that they are hoping to make the museum into a Western art museum as well as a history museum to ultimately show the history of Stamford, beginning with the town’s origins when Swenson first came to Texas and even including a future exhibit on Stamford’s involvement with World War II through the flight school at Arledge Field. In addition to transforming the museum, Kuenstler said that they are looking to bring more events into the museum as well as even take a part of the museum to schools through “history trunks,” which would act as a lesson to students in line with Texas education standards and bring a mobile field trip into the classroom for any age from Pre-K to 12th grade. Kuenstler noted the success of their family night in October as well as the “Christmas on the Frontier” event in November where kids, and even adults, were able to participate in hands-on activities involving the museum and even learn what it is like to work with museum pieces. The museum even played host to an end of the six weeks party for Oliver Elementary with nearly 200 students visiting the museum in November as well. Kuenstler said that through these events kids were about to get excited about history as well as be able to interact with it as well. While future events would have to be charged to offset costs, Kuenstler and Wedeking said that the museum will offer memberships starting at $20 per year for an individual, which would allow them to attend all events in the year. When asked about the museum operations, Kuenstler and Wedeking said that they work to log every piece that comes into the museum either on loan or as a donation to ensure that the pieces stay in the museum as well as keep an accurate record of items. After answering a few more questions, the council applauded Kuenstler and Wedeking for their efforts in the past six months along with giving a bright

Cowboy Country Museum Director Luci Wedeking and Museum Coodinator Jewelle Kuenstler gave an update to the Stamford City Council on the museum’s operations as well as past and future events during their regular meeting last Monday evening. outlook for the future. With the presentation complete, the council moved forward with going into executive session at 6:04 pm to discuss an ongoing matter with the city attorney. When the council reconvened into open session at 6:35 pm, Anders informed the room that no action needed to be taken from the executive session. The meeting then concluded with City Manager Alan Plumlee giving his report to the council. Plumlee began by presenting the council with a draft of a contract which would set up the voting process with the city, the hospital district and the school district. While a few other items still needed to be discussed, the consensus among all three entities was that the city would take the lead on elections and that all three entities would split election costs into thirds regardless if any one does not hold an election. Plumlee asked the council to look over the contract on their own time and return to him with any comments or suggestions. Plumlee went on to request that the council does not hold a regular meeting on January 2nd due to the need to get items together in a short time frame and instead hold items until the next meeting on January 16th, which will included the reading and possible rewarding of the bid of the airport farmland. With this said, the council agreed to this request to skip the January 2nd meeting. Plumlee concluded his report by stating that he had asked someone from outside of Stamford to come in and take over city code enforcement, which will relieve pressure from the previous enforcement officer as well as bring in an unbiased voice to help curb violations. With Plumlee’s report complete and no other business to conduct, the city council adjourned for the evening at 6:49 pm.

JONES COUNTY SHERIFF’S REPORT

The members of Central Presbyterian Church contributed over 30 jackets and other clothing to the students at Stamford ISD. Pictured are Dona Lackey, Shannon Lindsey, Dorthy Doan, Teresa Denson, and SHS Asst. Principal, Jeremy West.

Immanuel Imagine living during the days of Jesus’s first coming. Times would be quite different in many areas, the culture, the economy and the technology at that time was completely different from what we live with now. But, one thing that was the same for the people then as it is with us now, and that is God the Father has created each of us uniquely (Ps. 139:13-14). From the beginning of time we as humans, somewhere in our innermost being have a connection with the One that created us. The people of ancient Israel felt this connection but they longed for a deeper fulfillment that would come through the Messiah. From the Abrahamic Covenant in Genesis 12 to the prophet Malachi’s last words, the writing’s of the Old Testament foretold of a coming Savior. The people longed for this day to come, and many studied the Scriptures inside and out in their awaited expectation. The people were looking for the Messiah to come, however I think it took them all by surprise in the fashion that He arrived. Instead of a glorious introduction from the throne room of Heaven, Christ the King came into this world as baby boy born in a barn. The prophet Isaiah foretold of His arrival when He wrote, “The Lord himself will give you the sign. Look! The virgin will conceive a child! She will give birth to a son and will call him Immanuel (which means God is with us)”(Isa. 7:14).

“That night there were shepherds staying in the fields nearby, guarding their flocks of sheep. Suddenly, an angel of the Lord appeared among them, and the radiance of the Lord’s glory surrounded them. They were terrified, but the angel reassured them. “Don’t be afraid!” he said. “I bring you good news that will bring great joy to all people. The Savioryes, the Messiah, the Lord-has been born today in Bethlehem, the city of David! (Luke 2:8-11). The shepherds still overwhelmed by the amazing presence of the angels, took off towards Bethlehem to see the Messiah. The shepherds found the newborn baby Jesus just as the Angel of the Lord had told them. Amazed beyond belief, these shepherds who had long waited for the King’s arrival to this world, didn’t just see a baby that night wrapped in cloth, no, they saw the very face of God. The Scriptures tell us that, “After seeing him, the shepherds told everyone what had happened and what the angel had said to them about the child” (Luke 2:17). The Shepherds who were at the first Christmas leave us with a great lesson. They had a story to tell, they experienced the Savior of the World, and they were in such excitement that they wanted to share the love of God with everyone. We, too, have a story to tell, and that is that Jesus Christ the Messiah has come to this world to wash our sins away. Sadly, the enemy has done a great job in

the past years of stealing this story from many and replacing it with a fictional one. It has always amazed me that the two greatest moments in history (the birth and death/resurrection of God’s Son) are overshadowed by Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny. But then again we must realize that we live in an evil world and the ruler of this world is a professional at deceiving others from the truth (John 10:10, 1 Pet. 5:8). He disguises himself as an angel of light (2 Cor. 11:14) and will do everything in order to take away the spotlight from the Lord Jesus Christ. Yes, Jesus may not have been born on December 25th, however it is a day that we can reflect on this beautiful moment in history. So this Christmas I want to encourage you to reflect on the truth and make sure you’re honoring the birth of the Messiah. The Word tells us that our God is a jealous God (Exod. 34:14), and I firmly believe His Son’s birth deserves His own holiday! He doesn’t have to save us, but He offers it because He loves us. Don’t conform to the traditions of this world but instead live for the Kingdom of Heaven. Give Glory and praise to the King this Christmas because, “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). Oh my, it got cold, but we did not get the rain that we need so badly. It tried to rain, I got a sprinkle. According to the weatherman it is going to really get cold and bad. I hate to see it get icy when so many folks will be on the road for the holidays. I want to wish everyone a VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS. Have an enjoyable time with family and friends, but please be very careful if you travel. These last two weeks have been very active with a lot of Christmas parties and delicious food. Phyllis Letz was in Lubbock on Friday on business. While there she met her granddaughter, Madisyn, for lunch and they enjoyed doing some shopping together. Doing the week, Phyllis took care of grandson, Cale Letz in Stamford while his mother, Emery, was gone to a work shop concerning her job. Cale’s Father was busy stripping cotton. Cale had a band concert in Stamford school on Thursday evening. Phyllis, Cale and his parents, Casey and Emery met for dinner at a restaurant in Stamford when they returned home. Danny Letz and his band played for a Christmas Party in Roby on Saturday evening. Carm Letz drove to Abilene on Saturday to join her family, Lacey and Micah New, Darbee, Laynee, and Hazlee of Abilene, and Terry and Laramie Letz and Brody. They all went to watch Brody Letz and his Karate Class do a presentation during a basketball game half time in Abilene.

OLD GLORY NEWS By Anita Dozier Dale and Carm Letz met Jay and Sharon Beakley in Anson on Friday night and they enjoyed the Cowboy Christmas Ball. Mittie Dunham met her daughter, Shelly Dunham, in Abilene on Monday for a visit and to do some Christmas shopping. They were joined by granddaughter, Sonja Dunham, for lunch and a nice visit. Mittie returned home in time to attend the Ladies Fellowship Night at the Central Baptist Church in Aspermont for a fun time with Secret Santa and delicious refreshments. On Saturday evening, Pide and Mittie Dunham attended the Christmas Party at the Senior Citizens Center in Aspermont for an evening of fun. Pide won the Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest. Congratulations to Pide. I accompanied daughter, Marcie Tucker, of Hamby on a drive to Granbury on Saturday where we attended a birthday party honoring my great granddaughter, Adalyn Kern, on her 4th birthday. Youngsters and adults alike enjoyed many activities at the GymKat Sports Center before enjoying pizza, cake and ice cream. Meta Kupatt, Verlene

Corzine, Bernice Lunn, Anita Dozier and Odene Dudensing had lunch with Kay Teichelman in home in Stamford on Sunday following church services in Sagerton. It was good to have Lew Robbins from Tennessee visit with us in church this morning. Mrs. Robbins was a former pastor of the Faith Lutheran Church in Sagerton. A large crowd attended the Bell Choir Concert at the Faith Lutheran Church in Sagerton on Sunday evening. There were seven ladies and two gentlemen in the choir led by Dorothy Clark. Clyde Stegemoeller played the piano when the audience sang the Christmas songs the Bell Choir had played. Ray Clark read the Christmas story and led the singing. Following the program cookies and punch were served to everyone. It was a very enjoyable evening. Thought for the week: “Beware of false knowledge, it is more dangerous than ignorance.” Happy Birthday Wishes go to Leslie Brack, Kris Nehring, Kristi Martin, Ricky Lehrmann, Terry Letz, Linda Letz, Viva Turnbow, Joan Baldree, Daryl Schuchart, Heath Parker, Gregory Lehrmann, Christopher Adler, Shawna Kiser, Matt Jennings, Meta Kupatt, Furman Metcalf, and Chole Teichelman. We wish you many more. Anniversary greetings go to Terry and Denise Green, Glen and Helen Pierce, Furman and Juanita Metcalf, W D and Lois Ellison, and Samuel and Sabra Turner. Have a great day.

Anal Fissure Is Painful, Requires Treatment Plan DEAR DR. ROACH: My husband has been diagnosed with a rectal fissure. It has been a couple of months, and it isn’t any better. He has been treated only with a stool softener. What do you suggest? -- A.T.S. ANSWER: Anal fissures are painful. Although a stool softener is one part of management for people who have constipation, additional treatments also are appropriate, including a sitz bath, which is just a few inches of warm water in a basin or tub that you soak your bottom in. When I was an intern, I wondered about the origin of the term “sitz bath.” My resident, Dr. Lynn Brown, told me that it’s because you “sitz” in them, and it turns out she was right: It’s from the German “sitzen,” meaning “to sit.” Other treatments include increased fiber and a topical painkiller (there are many over-the-counter preparations in ointment form). These treatments help heal the fissure by relieving anal spasms caused by a painful bowel movement. I’m afraid your husband hasn’t had adequate treatment, leading to a vicious cycle of pain, spasm and nonhealing. In addition to these treatments, fissures heal more quickly with a medication to increase blood flow to the area: Nitroglycerin is available as a prescription ointment, and nifedipine can be compounded for topical use by a pharmacist, with better healing and fewer side effects than nitroglycerin (but both of these work better than no treatment). If this isn’t effective after a month, he should be re-evaluated. There are other options available before considering surgical treatment. A gastroenterologist is a good resource if his primary doctor hasn’t been successful. One other concern is that occasionally anal fissures are a sign of Crohn’s disease, a serious inflammatory bowel disease. People with recurrent, atypical (not in the midline) or nonhealing fissures should be evaluated for Crohn’s disease. DEAR DR. ROACH: You recently wrote about exercise causing rhabdomyolysis, and I have a question about that. My 92-year-old mother-in-law fell, and wasn’t sure how long she laid there, but the doctors said she had no broken bones. However, she did develop rhabdomyolysis. Since she does not exercise, how did she acquire this condition? The only medication she is on is one for blood pressure. -- G.M. ANSWER: Rhabdomyolysis is a very serious condition of muscle breakdown. The most common cause I have seen is your mother-in-law’s: pressure on muscle in someone who is unconscious or un-

TO YOUR GOOD HEALTH By Dr Keith Roach, M.D. able to move for a prolonged period (in normal sleep, the body changes position frequently, which prevents this). However, it can happen in untrained people after heavy workouts, or even in trained athletes who do extreme workouts, especially in hot and humid conditions. Some medications rarely can cause it, such as colchicine or statin drugs. Rhabdomyolysis is treated conservatively, by removing the underlying cause, and trying to prevent damage to the kidney. For elderly or frail people who live alone, I recommend a device that can be easily carried and pressed to get help. Some of these can recognize a fall and will send a signal automatically. Falls are common in the elderly, and these devices can help prevent some of the serious consequences of falling. READERS: The booklet on sodium, potassium chloride and bicarbonate explains the functions of these body chemicals and how low or high readings are corrected. To obtain a copy, write: Dr. Roach, Book No. 202, 628 Virginia Dr., Orlando, FL 32803. Enclose a check or money order (no cash) for $4.75 U.S./$6 Can. with the recipient’s printed name and address. Please allow four weeks for delivery. Dr. Roach regrets that he is unable to answer individual letters, but will incorporate them in the column whenever possible. Abbott picks TCEQ To Manage Clean Air Settlement Funds Gov. Greg Abbott on Dec. 4 announced his selection of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality as the lead agency for Texas’ participation in the Environmental Mitigation Trust. The trust was established in 2016 and early 2017 by the settlement of certain federal Clean Air Act claims against Volkswagen, Audi and Porsche related to the car companies’ use of “defeat devices” to pass emission standard tests. As a participating state, Texas must develop a draft mitigation plan outlining how it would spend its $209 million share of the settlement funds in efforts to reduce emissions of nitrogen oxides. “Our agency looks forward to developing a plan to efficiently administer these funds to help address issues associated with the emission of nitrogen oxides, which leads to ozone formation,” said TCEQ Commissioner Jon Niermann. “We look forward to working with all stakeholders to develop a plan that effectively mitigates the emissions from vehicles that did not meet the emission standards.” Comments on the use of the settlement funds may be submitted by email to VWsettle@tceq.texas.gov. Hurricane help is offered Many citizens who live in “Presidentially Declared Major Disaster Areas” — like the nearly 50,000 square miles of Texas hit by Hurricane Harvey — have home loans insured by the Federal Housing Administration. And of them, those who are having trouble making mortgage payments were encouraged, in a Dec. 4 announcement by Department of Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson and Texas Land Commissioner George P. Bush, to contact their service providers to learn about available resources or call the FHA Resource Center at (800) CALL-FHA.

CAPITAL HIGHLIGHTS

Ed Sterling “While we rebuild, many Texas homeowners are facing a second struggle of returning to work and making mortgage payments. To help these Texans, the General Land Office is proud to team with our disaster recovery partners at HUD to help those who need help avoiding foreclosure or assistance in financing repairs to damaged homes,” Bush said. The Federal Housing Administration, an agency within the Department of Housing and Urban Development, insures more than one quarter of home loans in Texas. REPORT CARDS ARE POSTED State Education Commissioner Mike Morath on Dec. 7 announced Texas’ 2016–2017 School Report Cards are available on the Texas Education Agency website, at http://tea.texas. gov/perfreport/src/index. html. The purpose of the report cards is to inform parents and guardians about a school’s characteristics and achievements, combining parts of other recently released accountability reports to provide campus-level information detailing student and campus performance. The School Report Card includes the following information for each campus in Texas: — 2017 state academic accountability rating; — Campus distinction designations; — Attendance rates; — Enrollment figures; — Dropout rates; — Class size averages;

— State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness results; — ACT/SAT results; and — Per-student financial expenditures. These campus reports, required by the Texas Legislature and prepared by the Texas Education Agency, will be sent to the parent or guardian of every child enrolled in a Texas public school by local school districts. STATE REVENUE TOTAL IS UP State Comptroller Glenn Hegar on Dec. 4 said state sales tax revenue totaled $2.78 billion in November, 11.1 percent more than in November 2016. “The double-digit growth in sales tax revenue compared to last year was fueled, in part, by increased collections from oil- and natural gas-related sectors. Recent higher oil prices have spurred increased well drilling and completion. Collections from retail trade and restaurants were also up, reflecting growth in consumer spending,” Hegar said. Total sales tax revenue for the three months ending in November 2017 was up 9.5 percent compared to the same period a year ago. Sales tax revenue is the largest source of state funding for the state budget, accounting for 58 percent of all tax collections. Motor vehicle sales and rental taxes, motor fuel taxes and oil and natural gas production taxes also are large revenue sources for the state. HEGAR DISTRIBUTES REVENUE Comptroller Hegar on Dec. 6 announced he would send cities, counties, transit systems and special purpose taxing districts $695.2 million in local sales tax allocations for December, an amount 10.8 percent more than in December 2016. Allocations were based on sales made in October by businesses that report tax monthly, according to the Office of the Comptroller.

Baru Forell: Horse Woman

Christmas As you are reading this, I am sure you are ready for the Christmas holiday this coming Monday. Once again, it seems like it comes along faster every year. Of course, if you are a kid then Christmas takes FOREVER to get here! I know that many of you are preparing to welcome family or travel this holiday, so I will begin by saying that I wish you all safe travels if you are traveling this weekend. With that said, Will McClure I wanted to take some time this week to talk about pretty much everyone’s favorite time of year which brings many glad tidings as well as remember those that cannot be with us. For some, Christmas is an especially hard time of the year with loved ones having passed away, and it is something that you can never seem to get over. Personally, I can still remember waking up on Christmas morning to see what Santa Claus brought me and my sister before we loaded up into the car to go to my Memaw and Pepaw’s house for Christmas Day lunch. It was always a wonderful day to spend with family, and it is emotional to think about now with both of them gone, but still in my memories. I would go on here, but I’m afraid I would get a little too personal, but I am sure that you have similar memories of loved ones where you would give anything to have one more day with them. The holiday season is also difficult for those that have to be away from their families this Christmas, especially those that continue to serve in our Armed Forces. We thank them every day for their service and sacrifice from being away from their families and I know that they would love to be home with their loved ones this holiday, but they are also proud to serve our country. So, let us remember these brave men and women this holiday season as well who cannot be home in time for Christmas. There are also many others that are not overseas that have to be miles away from their family this holiday from some reason or another, but sometimes a simple phone call is all it takes to make someone feel like they are home. I know this week feels like I am getting kind of sappy here, but family is what Christmas is all about to me at least. Sure, when I was a kid I was always looking forward to what Santa would bring me, but as I grew older I began to appreciate the time that I have with my family and all of the Christmases that I have been able to spend with them. It is the time of year where we spread our goodwill toward others and make those precious memories with our loved ones. I’ve said this in the past and I will say it again now, it will not matter at the end of the day if you were able to grab the last of the hottest toys of the season for your children, but instead it will be the memories that you make with them that will mean the most. Gifts are one thing, but these moments can last a lifetime. The material gifts that you give and receive may eventually wear away, but the memories that you make will never grow old or fade away. Take some time this holiday to choose to make these memories with your loved ones. After all, your family is truly the greatest gift of them all. Until next time, dear reader, my cap’s off to you and merry Christmas!

THOUGHTS FROM UNDER THE CAP

THE NEW STAMFORD AMERICAN

Baru Forell lives near Wingate southwest of Abilene. She has a unique brand for her horses. “It’s my name. It’s a barUfourL connected (-U4L).” She has been competing on horseback since the age of 9. The horses she rides are the ones that she has bred, raised and trained in ranch versatility, working cow horse and stock horse competitions. She has won championships in those events and is a board member of several horse and cattle associations. Baru is also a silversmith. Her work has been exhibited in western events from Texas to California. She has written articles for western publications and her award winning photography has been on display at the Hubbard Museum of the American West in Ruidoso, New Mexico and the Museum of the Big Bend in Alpine. Baru was a linguist in the US Army and speaks seven languages, some of them unusual like Serbo-Croatian, Bulgarian and Ukrainian. She joined the Army at the age of 33 and was on active duty 5 years. “I was overseas most of that time in

military intelligence.” Baru grew up on family land in Kansas. Her Irish mother named her to honor an Irish King. When Fort Worth decided to have a herd of longhorns in the stockyards, Baru helped get them there. Ranchers donated the longhorns. “I got hired before they started driving them, so we had some older longhorns and some of them hadn’t been handled very much. We’d go out there and kind of get them to where we could push them around, drive them on our horses. We did that for a couple of months, then we brought them to Sundance Square downtown and put them in pens. Then we drove them from Sundance Square across the Trinity Bridge to the stockyards. That was a thrilling experience for me to be a part of that.”

ESSAYS FROM WEST OF 98

The stockyards has a cattle drive with the longhorns on Exchange Avenue twice a day, at 11:30 AM and 4 PM. Baru was a drover two years. “The people who are everyday working cowboys on ranches kind of snicker at the job, saying it’s not a real cowboy job. That may be true, but I was so proud to represent our way of life to the world. That’s sometimes the only time those people on the street in Fort Worth are going to see somebody horseback and be able to pet the horse. That was foremost in my mind and I wanted to portray a good image to the world that represents what I love. For the

TUMBLEWEED SMITH

people out there working on ranches, raising beef, feeding the world, I wanted to be the best representation I could be for the industry.” She is mindful of first impressions and seldom goes out in public without a hat, boots and western clothes. People from all over the world go the stockyards area. Some from Eastern Europe are surprised when they are conversing in Bulgarian and this cowgirl overhears them and starts speaking to them in their language. “I did use my language skills quite a lot at that job. I met the ambassador to the United States from China and got my picture made with him. Those are the type of people that I got to visit with and felt honored to do so.”

If We Make It Through December Last week, I wrote about the importance of connecting people and place. This week, what’s on my mind is something important both in rural revitalization and elsewhere this Christmas season: hope. When people ask my favorite Christmas song, I invariably turn to Merle Haggard’s “If We Make It Through December.” It’s a song about brutal realities for many during Christmas: miserable weather, hard times, worries about making your children happy. And yet, it’s filled with an undercurrent of hope: “Got plans to be in a warmer town come summertime Maybe even California If we make it through December, we’ll be fine” The narrator has hope. If he can just make it through December, life will get better. If you carefully study the words, there’s no real guarantee that life WILL improve, but he holds on to that possibility. As long as you still have hope, you’ve still got a chance. 30 years ago, a group of folks in Stamford began a Christmas Dinner. That event was designed to spread hope: the creators believed that no one should have to be alone on Christmas Day. Meals on Wheels did not deliver and restaurants were rarely open, so these men decided to step into the gap. About 75 meals were delivered that day to shut-ins. That idea—and hope on Christmas Day—have rippled through Stamford ever since. Last year, almost 800 meals

were served, fully 25% of the town’s population. Hosted by St. John’s United Methodist Church, the dinner is made possible by over 100 volunteers from every church and group in the community, who provide deliveries, take-out, and dine-in options. The meal is open to each and every person who might desire a good Christmas meal and fellowship. Delivery drivers bring Christmas cheer and a hot meal to homes all over town. Folks of every ethnicity, net worth, and walk of life gather together in the church’s fellowship hall. There, they participate, all on the same level, in the most common and unifying of life experiences—sharing a table and a meal together. Through the years, I’ve witnessed miracles and loaves-andfishes stories. I’ve seen old friendships renewed, new friendships created, and the void of family on Christmas replaced by a new family of community. Over 500 pounds of turkey, 250 pounds of ham, 30 double pans of dressing, 40 gallons of sweet potatoes, 40 gallons of green beans, and 150 pies will be served. But the most important helping to be served is hope. Just like Merle Haggard, if we make it through December, we’ll be fine. But until that warm summertime arrives, may we hold on to hope for our own lives and communities, and if we have the opportunity, may we provide hope to our friends and neighbors. And if you’re looking for a tasty meal or just some fellowship on Christmas Day, there’s a place where you’re welcome no matter what. No person should have to be alone on Christmas Day, and in Stamford, Texas, you never have to be.

Recently, I wrote a column where I talked about about walnut trees, the different varieties of them, and how much I wished that they would thrive here. I’m pretty sure I also mentioned that the wood from black walnut trees is especially valuable, being used for many different things. In fact, one of the well known uses for black walnut, and something that is near and dear to a Texan’s hear, is for gun stocks. My understanding is that not only is black walnut wood extremely attractive, but it is also “stable”. It’s not something I had given a lot of thought to, as an end user, but when it was pointed out to me that one of the desirable qualities of a gun stock was for it to not warp, that made perfect sense. Anyway, black walnut wood, even including the stump, is so valuable, that people steal, or “rustle” them in the areas where they do grow naturally. I know, living in West Texas, that it’s hard to grasp that single trees, worth thousands of dollars, may be growing untended and “free range”, but they are. As far as I know, and keep in mind that I live in West Texas too, almost all cherry wood is harvested from natural growth trees. Locally, while we certainly have trees that are individually valuable (as a consulting arborist, I do tree appraisals, so I know something about this), what we don’t have is trees with much in the way of value, away from their location. In short, the extremely valuable, large, live oak, pecan, or magnolia that is so ap-

Well, this is where retained value works against us here in Texas. There is a lot of logging that goes on in the forests of the oyamel firs, and the larger the tree, the more valuable it is. Without going into detail as to why, the larger the tree, the more important it is to the life cycle of the monarch butterfly. Yeah, you can see where this is headed. A poverty stricken area, where there are valuable trees, just standing around, and a desirable species of insects that depends on those trees. I don’t know how all of this is going to work out in the end, but there are efforts to preserve the oyamel forests, and thus the monarchs. Only time will tell regarding the effectiveness of those efforts. In the meantime, every time someone does manage to rustle one of those trees, potentially, that theft can be felt all the way through our area, and on to points much further North.

Southwest Beef Symposium Set Jan. 17-18 in Odessa

The Southwest Beef Symposium, jointly conducted by the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and New Mexico State University Cooperative Extension Service, is set Jan. 17-18 at the MCM Elegante Hotel, 5200 E. University Ave. in Odessa. “Looking to the Future” is the theme of this year’s conference, said Dr. Bruce Carpenter, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist in Fort Stockton. “Cattle prices have adjusted downward after some very favorable years for cow-calf and stocker producers,” Carpenter said. “Consequently, various segments of the industry are now looking for opportunities to add income with improved production and/or marketing.” Individual early registration is $75, which includes a prime rib dinner on Jan. 17, lunch on Jan. 18 and refreshments and symposium proceedings. Early registration is required by Jan. 12. The Southwest Beef Symposium is slated for Jan. 17-18 in Odessa. (Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service photo by Dr. Bruce Carpenter) To register, or for more information go to http:// agriliferegister.tamu.edu/Beef or contact Carpenter at 432-336-8585, or Steve Paz, AgriLife Extension agent in Ector County, at 432-498-4071. Late and onsite registration is $95. The opening session from 1-5 p.m. Jan. 17 will address big-picture emerging issues in the global beef industry, Carpenter said. Issues and speakers will be: -The U.S. Cattle Market Outlook, Dr. Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University, Stillwater, Oklahoma. -International Market Outlook and Source Verification. Lee Ann Saunders, IMI Global, Castle Rock, Colorado. -Ranch Business Planning and Marketing Options for Cattle Type, Dennis Braden, Swenson Land and Cattle, Stamford. -Economics of Trichomoniasis, Dr. John Wenzel, NMSU Cooperative Extension veterinarian, Las Cruces, New Mexico. -The 2017 National Beef Quality Audit, Dr. Dan Hale, AgriLife Extension meats specialist, College Station. Topics on Jan 18 will focus on beef quality and health. The morning program will feature a discussion on the physiology of stress by Craig Gifford with NMSU Cooperative Extension. Dr. Ashley Stokes, deputy director of Extension at Colorado State University and former University of Hawaii Extension veterinarian, will provide insights on what they learned about transportation of Hawaiian cattle by air or sea to the mainland – as well as other transportation related information. Dr. Tom Hairgrove will talk about how the bovine immune system responds to stress. The afternoon program will follow lunch at the Ector County Coliseum, 4201 Andrews Highway. “We are very excited to have three of the top stockmanship people in the country join us this year,” Carpenter said. Curt Pate from Ryegate, Montana, and Dr. Ron Gill, AgriLife Extension livestock specialist at College Station, will demonstrate and discuss techniques for effective stockmanship and animal handling.
