Capital Farm Credit A Stamford Staple

Being human, we “learn something new every day” and this city girl learned about the farm credit system from Dan Byerly, Branch Relationship Manager of Capital Farm Credit in Stamford, TX. Product Credit Association (PCA) came about after President Franklin D. Roosevelt signed the Farm Credit Act into law in 1933. The nation was going through the Great Depression and he saw that food and fiber supplies were at stake and agricultural production was impacted by its credit sources. The purpose of the act was to improve federal lending to farmers.

Byerly has been at the Stamford office for about 6 years. He has worked with Mike Sloan, who has been there forty years. Speaking of Sloan, Byerly stated, “He’s watched us go from Rolling Plains PCA to First Ag Credit to Capital Farm Credit.” He added that Cindy Anders, a 35-year employee, and Sloan are the only employees who also worked in the building at 303 E. Hamilton.

When the building at 122

W. McHarg was acquired by Rolling Plains PCA in 1992 from the Resolution Trust Company, the PCA had been doing business at 303 E. Hamilton since it was built in 1956. Clark & Cobb, CPA had been established in the 122 W. McHarg location and they switched places. Clark & Cobb went to 303 E. Hamilton and remained there until 2018 when Condley & Company moved into that building.

R. C. “Clif” Cobb referenced the building at 122 W. McHarg in his 1996 book “A Credit to Agriculture, a history of the PCA,” “Construction was completed by the Savings and Loan Association on the west side of this building of modern design in March, 1965.

Floor space approximately doubled with the addition on the east side completed in 1979 consistent with the original design.” For many years the building was owned by the Bluebonnet Savings Bank.

In the mid-1980’s savings and loan companies began to fail. Rolling Plains PCA was able to acquire the building after the Bluebonnet Savings Bank closed. It was in the late 1980’s and

1990’s that many savings and loan associations were liquidating assets. Byerly stated that during the Bluebonnet Savings Bank days, there were temporary buildings to accommodate employees. These buildings were located behind the building all the way to the next street, W. Moran, now a storage unit business. He stated there were in excess of 100 employees working there at one time as part of a mortgage processing center.

Byerly has 27 years of banking experience, working in Hamlin with First Ag Credit and then through the merger to form Capital Farm Credit. “It’s been a matter of a lot of small, localized, institutions merged together for survival. Now Capital Farm Credit serves 192 out of 256 counties and we are the largest farm credit association in the Farm Credit Bank of Texas, at 7 billion dollars.”

Precinct 2 Commissioner Applicants Named

BY KAY SPEARS On Monday, March 25, 2019, the Jones County Commissioners Court met at the Courthouse in Anson, TX, for the second of two regular monthly meetings. In attendance were Judge Dale Spurgin, County Commissioners James Clawson, Ross Davis, Joel Spraberry, County Clerk LeeAnn Jennings, County Treasurer Amber Thompson, County Auditor Gwen Bailey, County Tax Assessor & Collector Gloria Little and County Sherriff Danny Jimenez.

The meeting was called to order by Judge Spurgin before the minutes of the last regular meeting on March 11, 2019 were approved.

Two items on the original agenda were deleted due to ongoing discussions and the need for more information.

Next on the agenda was to Discuss/Take Action on Anson Solar Center Tax Abatement. The Commissioner’s Court went into Executive Session to confer with Alan Carmichael, the attorney representing the county on the abatement agreement.

When the Court went back into regular session, Carmichael gave an update on the Anson Solar Center project. He stated there was progress on an agreement with Coronal Energy, the project developer.

They “sat on” a proposal for “quite some time” and came back to the original agreement Jones County had proposed for the three phases. It is Carmichael’s plan to have a final agreement this week and he will be able to “circulate notice to the other taxing entities, as required by law, seven days prior to signing and then sign on April 8th, the next regularly scheduled meeting.” Carmichael stated appreciation for

the Court’s patience and assured them that the delays have not been the fault of the Court or him.

Judge Spurgin stated the Anson Solar Center Road Use and Maintenance and Crossing Agreement will be finalized when they get the abatement agreement.

Carmichael stated, “It will be a part of the abatement agreement.” There was no action taken on these two items.

The next agenda item concerned the Property Bid submitted by Michael and Cassandra Hicks for the purchase of (R28981), Lakeview Lueders, Block 6, Lots 13-15, and (R28982), Lakeview Lueders, Block 6, Lots 16-18.

The total bid amount is $1,108.96. Court Costs total $1,108.96. The bid was approved.

Next was to discuss and take action on Disaster Declaration and all items related regarding FEMA, TDA and TDEM Forms and Requirements. Judge Spurgin gave an update on the applicants briefing held on Monday, March 11, 2019. The Texas Division of Emergency Management and FEMA were in attendance to lay out the process. There will be another formal meeting, a “kick off” meeting, when FEMA comes to go through the process again and assign a project manager. Information from the County can be submitted online. The next stage will be to sit down with a field technician and write up the scope of works.

Judge Spurgin stated, “Because of the size of this disaster, I think it’s imperative that we ask for small projects. Our preliminary disaster assessment was over six million dollars. We are responsible for 25% of that. We’ve asked for assistance in locating funds to help with that 25% match.

Clifton Joshua Bell Clifton Joshua Bell, 65, passed away Friday, March 22, 2019 in Abilene, surrounded by his family.

Funeral services were held at 3:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2019, at Kinney-Underwood Funeral Chapel with Pastor Matthew Breeden officiating. Interment followed in Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Kinney-Underwood Funeral Home. Visitation was held at 2:00 p.m. Sunday, March 24, 2019, at the funeral home before service time.

Clifton was born July 18, 1953 in Stamford, Texas, the son of the late A.J. Bell and Bobbie Bell Nieto. Clifton was retired from the oilfield and was currently living in the Austin area. Clifton was known by everyone to be a very generous man. He loved his family and enjoyed joking around with his nieces and nephews, giving them all a nickname. Clifton was a Baptist.

Clifton was preceded in death by his parents; his stepdad, Jack Nieto; a son, Phillip Bell; two brothers, Aaron Bell and Milton Bell, nephew, Brad Bell and sister-in-law Pam Bell.

Loving family surviving Clifton is a son, Eric Bell and wife Amanda of Hamlin; a daughter, Jessica Yearian and husband Robert of Abilene; three grandchildren; brother, Harley Bell of Stamford; three sisters, Emily McNair and husband Larry of Jonesboro, Arkansas, Shirley Breeden and husband Jackie of Abilene, Nancy Henthorne and husband Ken of Lockhart; and many nieces and nephews.

Dominga Moreno On Wednesday evening, March 20, 2019, our beloved mother, Dominga Moreno, passed peacefully to her eternal home at the age of 84.

Preceding her in death are her husband, Jesus Moreno in December 1997; daughter Mary Moreno in 1995; 4 sisters, Francis Gomez, Susie Vasquez, Carmen Ballesteros and Aurelia Delgado; 6 brothers, Larry Moreno, Sr., Tino Moreno, Marcy Moreno, Sylvester Moreno, Frank Moreno and Raul

Born March 3, 1935 in Sinton, Texas, Dominga was the second of 19 children born to Merced Moreno and Marta Rios Moreno. She had been a resident of Stamford for 60 years moving her from Violet, Texas. After her marriage to Jesus C. Moreno on March 23, 1962, she worked as a homemaker caring for her husband and children. A devout Catholic, she was a member of St. Ann’s Catholic Church; a valued member, musician, dedicated to the Cursillo movement, school of leaders and spent many of her daily hours praying. She shared her beautiful and engaging smile with all.

Family and friends were asked to gather at St. Ann’s Catholic Church Saturday, March 23, 2019 for a Mass of Christian Burial to celebrate Dominga’s life at 10:00AM with Father Chaka Thadathil officiating. Burial followed in Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home. Rosary was Friday, March 22nd at 6:00 p.m. at the Tankersley Funeral Home Chapel (807 Columbia).

Wendell Berry is a writer and farmer, viewed by many as one of America’s greatest living writers.

Most of Berry’s writing (both fiction and nonfiction) centers around his home area of rural Kentucky. He is one of the foremost proponents of a connection between people and their place, which is something that I’ve written about several times in the past. Berry coined the term “homecomer,” which he defined for Time Magazine as someone who left home, but then returned to the farm or their local community. A homecomer is someone, he said, who “followed the universal advice that they couldn’t amount to anything where they grew up and have gone away, but have found reason to come back.”

One such homecomer is Michele Anderson. She recently wrote a magnificent opinion column in the New York Times entitled, “Go Home to Your ‘Dying’ Hometown.” Anderson grew up in rural Minnesota, left for college, and spent a decade in Portland, Oregon working in nonprofit jobs, until she had her epiphany: “My work felt trivial and temporary. These feelings were magnified every time my rent increased and I found myself deeper in debt, or whenever there was a crisis or celebration at home, and I spent hundreds of dollars for a flight back to Minnesota.”

Will Brewer is Officially Stamford ISD Superintendent

BY KAY SPEARS On Monday, March 25, 2019 the Stamford ISD Board met in the Stamford High School Media Center.

In attendance were Gwen Baker, Curtis Birdsong, Jennifer Caddell, Justin Corzine, Cary McClintock, Jimmy Parker, Callie MetlerSmith, Leigh Nauert and Staci Robertson. Jennifer Caddell opened the meeting and Cary McClintock gave the invocation.

Stamford ISD Board Members went into Executive Session to Consider Level III Grievance. When Regular Session was resumed, a motion was made and approved to deny the Level II Grievance presented because the relief requested is not legal and the Board does not have the ability to grant it. It was added that the Stamford Administration review policies to verify that they align with the Student Code of Conduct.

There were no citizens present wishing to address the Board. There was a reminder of the TREA June Convention.

The Board was reminded to look over the SHAC (School Health Advisory Committee) Report. No questions about this report were asked at this time.

The next item of the Report Agenda was an update of the May election.

Early voting will be April 22-30, 2019, 8am-5pm, at City Hall. April 23 & 30 will have extended hours, 7am-7pm. Election Day will be May 4, 7am-7pm. There are six candidates for the two school board positions.

Given in ballot order: Curtis Birdsong, Eric Strand, Mindy Flow, Riley Carver, Cynthia Wimberly and Matthew Duran.

The Principals Reports were next with Principal Chambers reporting for both Oliver Elementary and Stamford High School. The Daddy/Daughter Dance was a great success with 118 students participating.

“Every child that wanted to go, got to go.” Testing is going on currently and in April there will be 4th Grade writing and 5th Grade math and reading.

Third graders are going to Safety City this week. This week has been very busy at the High School. The softball team is doing very well, 2 and 0 in the District.

Baseball is improving every week. The golf team is doing very well. The track team is doing well. The UIL Academics is Tuesday, March 26, 2019, along with Bi-District One-Act Play performing in Eldorado, TX on Wednesday, March 27th.

The FCLE is competing next week.

HELLO FROM COWBOY COUNTRY

Continuing on with our story by William Henry Pumprhey Sr., from last week’s paper (as originally published in the book A History of Stonewall County). If you’ll recall Mr. Pumphrey had been telling us what it was like growing up on the 10X Ranch and the waterhole they called “Old Blue”…

“This is away from the subject, but each year during the wheat harvest, many men would help us gather the wheat with the bundle wagons and teams.

Men such as’ Dobe Roberson, C. H. Mitchell, Saywers, Pittcocks, Metcalfs and others. But those from across Salty (Salt Fork Brazos), would come by old Blue, on the road to the ranch.

Now on the weekends, they’d leave the roads and head off down the canyons walls - hollering, bouncing, running at full speed till they reached the bottom unbelievable and dangerous ... not just one, but two and sometimes three of them on their way home!

There used to be a dirt road from Raynor’s old court house to Old Blue that went to the cattlemen’s home across the river.

There was another road the same size 40 to 60 feet wide from Rule to Aspermont, now the county seat.

It was also used for cattle drives to market in the earlier days and went through

Baldwin and Pumphrey pastures.

Old Timers of Stonewall, there are many landmarks of yours and your grandparents. Make a note - I’d like to have them. Write me, thanks.

Stonewall is the grandchild of Haskell County as Judge Bryant, of Haskell, Texas used to rib me about.

The Old Mission or Fort (“Rock House”) on the northwestern part of the 1OX Ranch in the cedar breaks a short distance of Salt Fork Brazos. My Mother, Ada Pumphrey Sr., treasured this house very much, and for many years would take us back there, and we’d try to replace the rocks from its walls. It was dear to her and she would tell us she was doing this for the coming generations of Stonewall County and also Texas history. I understand now, that it is gone, what deep sorrow. Mr. Sprout Roberson told me that on the roof top of the second story was a large lookout. The upstairs floor and roof were made of cedar. On top of the cedar roof were flat rocks in case the Indians fired an arrow - and the rock would prevent it from burning. The Indians were really killers in that day, so the Spaniards built accordingly.

There were many mine shafts up and down the

Salt Fork River. Someday, perhaps, someone will find what they were digging - we knew they searched for silver and copper, but rumors were of gold, as well.

The Spaniards came out of Colorado to Louisiana and that was their trail. At one time, they were supposed to have brought 18 million in gold bullion, and to have buried it near the Mission. Not exactly there, but nearby. I thought where Cherokee Bill lived, others said on 10X Ranch. They had to get rid of the bullion as the Indians were after them and their belongings.

On the East of the ranch (we called it the East Pasture on Tonk Creek), there are many brands in the rocks. Some are from the Old Trail Drivers who came through there to Ogalalla, Nebraska, or Dodge City, Kansas.

On Tonk Creek, there’s a rock bluff we all used to fish from on weekends.

Mother found a cave with beads, arrows,. Bones (big and small) also Indian graves. My wife, Ruby Nelle Pipkin Pumphrey, has some of these artifacts to this day. They came, of course, from an Indian burial ground. There’s a hill on the southwest part of the ranch called Reedberry Hill with arrow- heads all over the ground.

The first tornado I saw out there was from the old ranch house Northwest of the old bridge crossing Tonk Creek. They were terrible! They’d go right down to the Tonk Creek bridge

and play out. Sometimes you wouldn’t see them for several years. The mean ones came down Salt Fork across the ranch. The noise and clouds were terrible, but everyone had storm cellars and used them. We were very fortunate, we had tenants besides my brother Andrew and I. These are a few of the early ones. Hatch Bros., Ike Miller, the Hunts, Agnew. They were fine with livestock and were fine people.

Mother built a telephone line from Rule, Texas to the old ranch house and furnished everything but the hand crank phone. Before long everyone was on our line, for Mother loved her fellow persons.

Our ranch foreman was Fred Ponkney. He came to my father in Taylor, Texas, when he was in his teens. Father placed Mr. Ponkney on the ranch north of Noack, Texas under the direction of Mr. Henry Townsend. Mr. Townsend later was made foreman of 1OX ranch, until he became City Marshall at Rule. Then Fred Ponkney left the place at Noack and became our foreman on 10X. When Fred moved to Stonewall, his brothers followed him to Stonewall and there Fred and Henry Ponkney lived till their deaths. They were fine persons.

We had to buy some wolf dogs, also two cross breeds - part bull dog and part St. Bernard. These were used to make kills .The wolves and coyotes got so bad, killing the young stock on the ranch. Friends and neighbors, and a Baptist preacher from Ft. Worth brought his dogs. This was mostly after

a rain. We also had 2 beautiful Russian Wolf Hounds which we used for daylight hunting in the cleared pasture East of the ranch.

People would come from miles around to see this.

We also had to put out poison to kill rattlesnakes, skunks, owls, badgers, and prairie dogs. They were dangerous to our livestock and the cowman. When running a horse, if he stepped into a hole, the horse could break his leg and you’d have to kill him, and these animals would damage our crops besides.

There had been a short drought, so Mrs. Ada Pumphrey called a very dear friend of Father’s - Mr. John Nance Garner in Washington, D.C. He went to the Dept. of Agriculture and sent her literature about how to build a silo. She built one on the northeast side of the ranch. The men ground the feed and at the same time put molasses with it as to orders. Everyone told her it would kill her stock, but it didn’t, and she didn’t have to worry about the drought. I’ll never forget, when the silo was built, I drove one of the wagons to Rule for the cement. The gravel came off the ranch.

Later years we quit raising horses and mules as there was no more profit.

I’ll always remember one sale of live- stock we didn’t ship to Ft. Worth. Mr. Ballard (near Haskell), I believe was his name, brother-inlaw of ex-Gov. Jim Ferguson, had bought some cattle at market price from Mother. Shortly thereafter, the bottom fell out of the market, and she had been paid for them several days before. She realized his position and returned half of his money when the cattle was delivered to him.

I can’t help but mention my longest cattle drive. It was that time of year for the fat steers to be shipped to market. About this time, something happened to the Railroad bridge going to Stamford from Old Glory.

The cattle were penned a

few miles from Old Glory in corrals, and our agent in Ft. Worth, Mr. Chas. Daggett was waiting for them. It being 40 some odd miles by dirt road to Stamford, the Cowboys, I, and Mother in her buggy, made this drive with- out an error. The farmers, ranchers, towns people - all helped. This shows you the kindness, consideration, and thoughtfulness of all the people of those counties in that day and time.

There are many things good and bad there as everywhere else. We were losing cattle, and so were a few of our neighbors.

Sheriff Bailey Bingham was doing all in his power to stop the thieves. A short time thereafter, a young man who knew our cattle brands, saw some of our cattle at a rail station north of Rule, Texas and reported to Mrs. Ada Pumphrey, Sr. She called the Southwestern Cattleman’s Association, in Abilene, Texas, I think. In a few days, Texas Rangers Frank Hammer of Abilene, Texas, and Lone Wolf Gonzales came to see my Mother. They stayed with us, and also at Aspermont.

Within 2 weeks they had caught the bunch driving the cattle up the Salt Fork of Brazos to the town with the rail connections. Some of these were sent to the penitentiary and very little stealing took place thereafter.”

Hope y’all have enjoyed this story as much as I have here in the museum. It’s been great learning more about the family of the once mysterious Aaron Pumphrey who is buried out at the SMS Flat Top Ranch. Researching these kinds of old legends is one of my favorite parts of working at the museum and library. Goes to show you never know what you might discover by taking a little time to look into something!

ACCOUNTABILITY Our good word for today is ACCOUNTABILITY. Now, there is word that is becoming obsolete today.

It seems as if no one has accountability. This is especially true with a great many of our elected officials. Politics aside, we all need to be held accountable for our actions. Even if no one else holds us accountable, we should hold ourselves accountable. We must take full responsibility for our Bill Hillier deeds, words and even thoughts. I am reminded of a Bible verse: 1 John 1:9 (KJV) “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” If we hold ourselves accountable and take full responsibility for our misdeeds, we obtain forgiveness, and forgiveness is a wonderful thing. On the other hand, if, we do not hold ourselves accountable, we know that eventually the Almighty will. Romans 14:12 (KJV) “So then every one of us shall give account of himself to God.” I don’t know about you, but I would rather get that done now rather than later. It is hard to do but the reward of forgiveness is well worth it. Whether you have sinned against God, your spouse, your neighbor, or society, take responsibility and hold yourself accountable. Whisper a prayer of thanks and confession, find forgiveness, and have a blessed day.

Next agenda item concerned Proposals for Repairs to Low Water Crossing on CR 311 and Deadman Creek. Judge Spurgin noted the need to wait to communicate with FEMA. No action was taken.

No action was taken on Bids on Material and Material Hauling. No other bids have been submitted.

It was approved to authorize Advertisement for Air Conditioner Chiller & Pump for Courthouse.

Proposals will be accepted and evaluated at the meeting on April 25, 2019.

Next was to discuss and take action on Equipment Purchase. Sherriff Danny Jimenez updated the Court about the changes on an earlier approved proposal to purchase 2 new vehicles for the Sherriff’s Department. Cop Sinc stopped being used when they stopped in-car cameras. He asked for the money approved for a second vehicle be used for car and body cameras. A $17,000 grant will help pay for the $48,745.45 cost. The Sherriff and Judge Spurgin noted how important video evidence is in court cases. The new company will have good quality video and audio, especially for court use. The equipment purchase was

approved.

Sherriff Jimenez then presented a proposal for new graphics for vehicles used by the Sherriff’s Department. He stated the vehicles need to be seen for the safety of the deputies and as a deterrence. For eight vehicles the package and the installation cost will be $4,632. This proposal was approved.

Next, Advertisement on Bids for Sale of Surplus Property and Vehicles was approved to begin in 4 weeks.

The County Treasurer’s Report was approved. Thompson reported an upcoming training to the Court. Jack Coffee is the road & bridge safety training person from the Texas Association of Counties. He contacted the Treasurer to conduct a DOT (Dept. of Transportation), UA training for people holding (Commercial Driver’s Licenses) CDL’s. She will coordinate schedules to set a date and time for the training.

The Line Item Transfer was then presented by County Auditor Gwen Bailey and approved, along with paying the bills.

The last item on the agenda was to discuss the Appointment for Vacancy in the Office of County Commissioner Precinct 2. Judge Spurgin explained his goal was to announce the Precinct 2 County Commissioner appointment today, however due to illness there is one more interview to be conducted.

He gave the names of the 11 appli-

cants for the Precinct 2 County Commissioner position. They are: Matthew Duran, Zane Wedeking, Bob Herndon, Jan Lefevre, Warren Wilson, Billy Melton, Lonnie Vivian, Gary Ender, Stephen Sweet, Tommy Bearden and Robert Wingrove.

Judge Spurgin stated, “Whoever receives the appointment will hold it until the next general election, which will be November of 2020. At that time whoever is elected will be elected to the unexpired term for the next two years. And then they run again for the full four-year term in November of 2022. Whoever is appointed or anyone else interested will be filing for the office in November of this year. That period is from the middle of November to the middle of December, running in the primary next March and the general election in November.”

A question of redistricting was raised. Judge Spurgin stated redistricting is coming up after the census taken in 2020. In 2021 Jones County will be doing redistricting, redrawing Commissioner Precinct lines, balancing population and road miles to make each precinct equal. It is a public process with a Public Advisory Committee that assists the Commissioner’s Court in the process.

Commissioner’s Court was then adjourned.

Despite Fewer Hits, Archer City Beats Stamford

BY KEVIN BARTLEY The Stamford Bulldogs struggled to put runs on the board and had a tough time defensively containing Archer City, giving up 12 runs on Saturday, March 23.

The Bulldogs opened up scoring in the first inning, when Bryson Holt singled on a 0-1 count, scoring one run. In the top of the second inning, Archer City tied things up at four. J. Browning drew a walk, scoring one run.

Archer City pulled away for good with four runs in the third inning. In the third an error scored one run for Archer City. K. Beaver singled on the first pitch of the at bat, scoring one run, and C. Byrd’s sac fly scored another run.

Byrd led Archer City to victory on the pitcher’s mound.

He allowed 11 hits and five runs over seven innings, striking out six.

Holt took the loss for Stamford. He lasted one and twothirds innings, allowing three hits and four runs while striking out one.

The Bulldogs totaled 11 hits. Holt, Brett Patterson, and Kaleb Flick each had multiple hits. Hold led Stamford with three hits in four at bats. M. Mobley went 3 for 4 at the plate to lead Archer City.

WEST TEXAS TREES AND LANDSCAPES

By Bruce Kreitler and the KWKC Green Team Having been in the tree business a long time, one of the things that I’ve really appreciated is advances in technology, knowledge, equipment, and products that are available to our industry. Recently I sat in on a demonstration of a chemical and its application method that I expect to be very helpful in treating trees. Ten years ago, either that chemical didn’t exist, or at least it was not used for the particular tree problem I’m going to be using it for.

Since this chemical has been proven to be nearly one hundred percent effective, against one particular tree pest, I’m going to consider that it will be a handy tool in the toolbox for the tree industry. Additionally, the application method for it, while somewhat unwieldy and time consuming, is much improved over the first versions (I’ve been watching this particular method go through its evolution). In this case, I would have to say that this is almost the perfect example of what we want from technological/scientific advances.

A need is identified, such as a bad tree pest, researchers

identify the problem, come up with a solution, and the hardware people come up with a way to deliver it. And let’s not forget that there is at least one more necessary step involved in this process. After everybody else gets done, then the business people have to figure out how to make it economically feasible for the general public. In this particular case, in my opinion, all of the above has come together. I love it when advances work like that. If only it went that way all the time.

While technology, knowledge, equipment, and products have certainly advanced over the years, another thing that has taken a big leap forward is available information. Personally, I don’t know what the average person would say has been the biggest jump ahead in this area, but I suspect if asked they would say either the internet, or cell phones. To my way of thinking, it’s the internet, and the ability to search for nearly any information you want. Granted, smart phones can be pretty handy, and are impressive in a “what they can do” kind of way, but without the availability of the internet, those smart phones wouldn’t be nearly as smart. Anyway, the way it is now, there is very little information, about anything, unless it is purposefully withheld, that isn’t available to anybody who wants to take the time to find and disseminate it. I find this to be an extremely useful tool, and while I still have physical books, and other reference material, and use them, I do a lot of online searching/reading for information that I need.

The dark side of this rise

of information, is that while “everything” being available is a blessing, it just so happens, that everything being available is also something of a curse. Unfortunately, it turns out, that not all information is good, or even correct. In fact, sometimes it isn’t even close to correct. In fact, I wonder what doctors think when patients start telling them that they looked up their symptoms on the internet. I don’t think I would try that one, because it might wind up with that shot that was going to go into my arm, becoming a much bigger needle that goes into my…, well, suffice it to say, that I don’t think the internet is the best place to get a medical diagnosis.

Recently, I sat in a daylong conference on trees, insects, diseases, and treating. There were a couple of speakers at this event who were purportedly very knowledgeable, longtime tree researchers, who also were also supposed to have extensive “in the field” experience. One of the speakers was pretty good, and I took notes when that person spoke. On the other hand, the other speaker was, in my opinion, pretty far “out there”. For instance, when discussing a particular fungal disease, that I think most of us in the room were familiar with, this person said that when this particular disease killed a tree, the proper removal method would include pulling up, not grinding or digging up, the stump and all the roots.

About this time, the people at my table started looking at each other in a little bit of disbelief. However, the speaker went on to add that while you have the yard

completely torn up, take the opportunity to “finish the job”, change out a lot more soil, and change the soil from “fungal based, to a bacteria based soil”. I think the reason nobody asked any questions about that is that we were all stunned, and nobody knew what to say. It’s been a long time since I heard such a ridiculous, meaningless, proposition put forward, and it was by somebody who was supposed to be at the top of our field.

The point of that last paragraph, is that the speaker who I felt did so poorly, is undoubtedly someone who has published papers, is sought out as a consultant, and is touted as being a good resource. If the average person does an internet search, they may run across papers or columns from this person pushing changing a yard over from a fungal based environment to one that is bacteria based, and think that’s some pretty good information, because, clearly, it’s coming from someone who knows their stuff.

As far as trees go, I think the internet is a good thing, but it’s still just another tool in the toolbox, and a lot depends on how you use it.

Air Pollution From Tank Fire Sparks Lawsuit Images of a stream of billowing dark smoke drew the nation’s attention last week to a fire that engulfed 11 petrochemical storage tanks at the Intercontinental Terminals Company about 15 miles southeast of Houston in Deer Park.

On March 17, Gov. Greg Abbott ordered that all state resources be made available to local and industry officials and urged residents to heed the warnings of local officials. Governmental bodies in nearby affected areas ordered residents to shelter in place because of concerns about unhealthy air quality. Deer Park Independent School District and other districts canceled classes for several days.

The fire was extinguished on March 20. Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton on March 22 announced that his office, acting on behalf of the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, had filed a lawsuit naming the tank storage company as the defendant.

The lawsuit alleges that the fire caused air pollution from benzene, xylene, toluene and other contaminants, in violation of the Texas Clean Air Act. In a statement accompanying the lawsuit, Paxton said, “No company can be allowed to disrupt lives and put public health and safety at risk.”

The Chemical Safety Board, an independent federal agency charged with investigating industrial chemical accidents, announced March 21 that an investigation into the fire would be opened.

Jobless Rate Stays Low Texas’ seasonally adjusted unemployment rate held at 3.8 percent in February, according a March 22 news release by the Texas Workforce Commission.

The Midland Metropolitan Statistical Area recorded February’s lowest unemployment rate with a nonseasonally adjusted rate of 2.2 percent, followed by the

Growth in the Texas economy continued in February, with 17,700 seasonally adjusted non-farm positions added over the month.

Ticketing System Targeted Photographic traffic signal enforcement systems would be banned under Senate Bill 653 by Sen. Bob Hall, REdgewood.

Hall seeks to prohibit municipalities and other local jurisdictions from using redlight cameras as a means of issuing traffic tickets.

In laying out his bill before the Senate Transportation Committee, Hall said that under the red light camera enforcement, “the innocent owner has then the burden of proof and often great expense of proving that they did not commit the alleged violation. This turns our judicial system completely and utterly upside down by requiring the accused to prove their innocence.”

More than two dozen people testified for or against

the bill in a March 20 Senate Transportation Committee hearing.

Regents To Examine Policies Gov. Abbott on March 18 sent a letter to all Texas public university boards of regents following the U.S. Department of Justice’s investigation into an alleged college admissions bribery scheme.

In his letter, Abbott called for governing boards of Texas’ institutions of higher education “to examine and investigate admissions policies and procedures to ensure that no university employee engages in fraudulent schemes, quid pro quo arrangements or improprieties of any sort.” He added that Texas parents and students “must have confidence that the system is not rigged.”

Busby Joins High Court Brett Busby of Houston on March 20 was confirmed by the Texas Senate and sworn in as the newest member of the Supreme Court of Texas for a term set to expire on Dec. 31, 2020.

Gov. Abbott nominated Busby on Feb. 21 to fill the opening left by Justice Phil Johnson of Amarillo, who retired at the end of December.

Busby is a former justice of the Fourteenth Court of Appeals, having served from June 2012 through December 2018. He previously was a partner at Bracewell & Giuliani LLP, an adjunct professor at The University of Texas School of Law and a U.S. Supreme Court law clerk.

New Lawmaker Sworn In State. Rep. Christina Morales, D-Houston, was administered the oath of office on March 17.

Morales won a March 5 special election runoff to fill the vacancy created when former longtime Texas House District 145 Rep. Carol Alvarado was elected to the Texas Senate to succeed Sen. Sylvia Garcia, who was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in November.

Chart Your Path We are now officially in spring and the school year is winding down very quickly with only a little over two months to go. It is always a strange feeling to think that time sometimes does fly by as we will be in the summer months before we know it. With the school year winding down, graduating seniors are starting to realize, if they haven’t already, THOUGHTS FROM that they need to make a plan for their future. Whether it is goUNDER THE CAP ing off to college or entering the workforce, a path needs to be set Will McClure in their minds as they get ready to walk the stage (or football field, depending on the school) and receive their hard-earned diploma. As such, many feel like they may be ill-prepared, especially when it comes to the job market. Luckily, many high schools have tried to offer specialized classes and, in the case of my school at Sweetwater, we will be holding a special “senior interview” to allow seniors the opportunity to meet with employers for a practice job interview, thus helping them know what to expect and how to get a much better chance at starting a career where they desire to be. However, as we all know it is never as simple as “here is your diploma and here is your job”; instead, it takes more hard work and patience to get to where one wants to be (a work ethic that was hopefully acquired in school!).

At this time of year, what is known as “senioritis” may set in for students as they are ready to be finished with school, especially those that are not going directly to college. However, now more than ever is the time to “knuckle down” and make sure that they reach graduation day with no issues. You hear many stories of high school students barely missing being able to walk the stage because they decided to fall behind in one course, especially when that is a core subject! While it is true that seniors have many more elective options and few core subjects when they reach that level (they do not even need to take a STAAR exam! I’m a little jealous because I had to, but I digress).

Many think that just because that are seniors, they will get “passed over” or be given “easier days” just to make sure that they graduate. I can tell you from experience that from both sides of the classroom that it is still a lot of work and a path that one may choose may crumble before their eyes simply because they made the decision to goof off.

All I am saying here is that we all try to choose a path that best suits us and we truly began that journey the moment we graduated from high school. There are some in the past, the present and even the future that think that everything will be fine that they get complacent and end up not earning that high school diploma. You can even hear stories of those that ended up studying for their GED and said it was the most difficult experience in their lives, but it was needed to keep moving on the path that they want. We all have dreams and ambitions, even when our high school days are far behind us. However, we can never let complacency settle in, otherwise those hopes and dreams that we want will just become a fantasy. To go a step further, if we continue to let complacency control us, we can see our path close forever. For our graduating seniors, I end with one final thought of encouragement: Fight for your dreams, follow your path and keep working towards it every step of the way. While it may be close to time to celebrate the end of your high school career, your entire life is still very much ahead of you. Make the right decisions now so that you will not have any regrets later.

Veterans Relax At Granite Ranch

You have to go through the little village of Roosevelt to get to Granite Ranch near Junction. Roosevelt has a post office inside the only store in town and was established in 1887 as a supply point and ranch headquarters.

It’s named for Theodore Roosevelt.

Ronnie Rains of Odessa owns Granite Ranch, a beautiful 3,000-acre piece of property overlooking the Llano River. It has a 9-hole lighted golf course, a lake featuring catch and release trophy bass fishing, an old saloon and much more. He opens it up to wounded warriors.

“They sky dive, they kayak, they shoot long range rifles. We have about 20 different species of native and exotics here but we don’t do any hired hunts for the public.

People want to pay to go hunting on the ranch. We don’t do that here. We spend money here. We don’t make it. This ranch is for veterans who are somewhat challenged.

They’ve been wounded

in wars. They have an opportunity to take some time off here.

We have one guy who’s a quadriplegic and we rigged up a rifle with mechanism for him to gauge windage and elevation and pull the trigger.

He pretty much gets an animal every year.”

Ronnie served in Viet Nam with the First Armored Division. Once he was approached by some men while he was at a car auction in Florida.

“They introduced themselves and they were with a group called Wounded Warriors Family Support. I’m currently on the board of it and a couple more veterans’ organizations. We started going to a place in San Antonio called Center For The Intrepid. I was visiting with some Marines and asked what we could do

for them on weekends and they said ‘get us outa here.’”

Ronnie makes his living by building gas plants.

“I started a little business and turned it into a big business and now I have about 250 employees. We do grass roots design, construction, start-up, pretty much anything to do with the gas and oil business.”

He has an impressive car collection on the ranch.

“I’ve got about 90 cars now. Started out just doing Corvettes and

developed over into some muscle cars and exotics.

I’ve got Fords, Indy cars, Oldsmobiles, Corvettes, Chevelles, Mustangs, just a pretty good collection.

Every spring we do a bluebonnet cruise where veterans take an old car and drive to Luckenbach, drink a beer, then go see if we can find some bluebonnets. It’s a lot of fun.”

The veterans inspire Ronnie.

“Just imagine being 20 years old and you’re good at everything you do.

You’re very athletic and get into special operations and you’re fighting Taliban every night. In half a second you went from being a trained warrior to being in a wheelchair. For those guys who go through that without losing their minds I tip my hat to them.”

Don’t you like this nice weather? I love it, so glad it’s Spring. The days are getting longer, can spend more time outside. We do need to pray for rain again.

I don’t believe I have ever seen so many weeds, some I have never seen before.

We get all kinds of new things coming in from somewhere.

Verlene Corzine and I attended the Stamford Chamber of Commerce Best of Stamford on Monday evening at the Stage Coach Event Center. Beautiful decorations, plenty of delicious food and many awards given. Got to visit with lot of folks, it was a great evening.

I enjoyed having the dominos gals at my house on Wednesday afternoon.

We did not have Hobby Club on Thursday as planned, due to so many members were out of town.

The musical on Saturday evening at the Community Center was a great one.

Approximately sixty folks came out to enjoy the good food from the concession stand and lot of great music. So many talented musicians and singers. Thanks to Doris Lehrmann for the pie, and to everyone that attended to support

While Sybil, Verlene and I were getting things set up for the musical, we had a couple of surprise visitors.

Ray Worley from Georgia and his son, Brandon Worley from Colorado City, Texas. I was very surprised to find out Ray’s dad went to school here and was a classmate of mine along with his twin sister Faye Worley. He said the late Ansil and Mable Sawyer and Geraldine Garner and the late John L. were his aunt and uncles . They were on their way to Rochester to

visit relatives and stopped by to see the inside of the Community Center and to look at some of the pictures on the walls. It was good to visit with them.

On her way to Haskell on Thursday, Mittie Dunham stopped by to visit with Bernice Rhoads. Bernice is doing well since her knee replacement.

On Sunday morning, Mittie Dunham met a dear friend, Beverly Ward from Tolar for breakfast in Aspermont. Beverly was on way home from visiting relatives in New Mexico.

Shirlene Sikes and Teresa Anderson from Aspermont joined Mittie and Beverly and they all enjoyed a great visit.

Following church service in Aspermont Mittie enjoyed having lunch with Herbert and Yvonne Williams from Rule and Bo and Whiz Creighton from OG in Aspermont.

Justin and Barbara Waldon, Cody and Hunter from Hawley came for a visit with his dad, Gerral Waldon and Shelly Dunham on Sunday.

Dale and Carm Letz joined Doug and Debbie Vahlenkamp, Keith and Lou Corzine, Rita Stephens and Diane Smith at the home of Marvin and Brenda Vahlen-

kamp in Aspermont to celebrate Lou’s birthday on Saturday evening.

On Friday evening, Dale and Carm Letz drove to Haskell to visit with their children, Lacey and Micah New, Darbee, Laynee, and Hazelee and had dinner with them. Hazelee came home with her grandparents to spend the night and Granny took her home on Saturday.

Well, this is the week for the famous Hee Haw in Sagerton. They will begin serving a meal around 5:30PM each evening on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. The show will begin at 8:00 PM following some good country music.

On Sunday morning members of the Faith Lutheran Church will be joining members of the United Methodist Church at the Methodist Church for morning services in Sagerton.

Since this is the last week in March, we need to take a look at the first few days of April, beside April Fool’s Day. On Sunday, April 7 members will gather at the Old Glory Lodge for their monthly meeting at 4 PM. Hamburgers will be furnished, bring desserts.

Stamford Middle School Principal White reported track will not run next week but will resume on April 11, 2019 at the Junior High District Track Meet in Roscoe, TX. He explained the 7th and 8th graders will be doubling up to participate in the STAR testing due to scheduling conflicts. STAR testing will be on April 9th & 10th. To go into 7th grade, 6th graders need to have their scheduled shots. The shots will be given, free of charge, in the Library of the Media Center.

On Wednesday, April 17th, the 6th graders are going on a field trip to the Ft. Worth Science Museum. The SMS dance is scheduled for Thurs-

day, April 18th, with Friday being a holiday. Thirty-seven Stamford art students have had their pieces displayed at the Old Jail Museum in Albany, TX. Coach Casey gave an enthusiastic report on the Stamford sports program and activities. “We are seeing a lot of kids do their personal best at this time of the year, which is where you want them to be.”

When God Ran

Forth Sunday In Lent Joshua 5:9-12; Psalm 32; II Corinthians 5:16-21; Luke 15:1-3, 11-21 The Old Testament prophet Isaiah writes “we all, like sheep, have gone astray.” Sadly, I think we can all testify to the truth of his statement. Most of us, with a little thought, can think back to a time (or times!) where we messed up. Where we made the

wrong choice or picked the wrong side. We all, at one time or another, have gotten lost. The season of Lent is designed for those of us who are lost. All too often, those of us who are lost grow accustomed to our new surroundings…our lostness. And we begin to think of it as home. We get comfortable being lost. We grow roots in a land that is not our home. And then comes Lent. Lent calls us, often forces us, to look at who we are…at where we are. It reminds us we have traveled to the far country, beyond the sight of home.

It reminds us that sometimes we get lost and go astray.

In this week’s Gospel reading, Luke records another parable of Jesus.

The parable of the Prodigal Son is perhaps one of the most famous parables of Jesus. It has inspired songs,

poetry, and art. One of Rembrandt’s most recognizable paintings is entitled The Return Of The Prodigal Son. In this parable, Jesus tells the story of a selfish son who cares only for himself and his own happiness. This son tells his father he wants his share of the family inheritance so he can leave and live the life he has always wanted to live. So the father grants the request and gives him the money. The son leaves and travels to distant lands where he squanders his new found wealth at wild parties and on wild living.

Eventually he wakes up to find himself broke, alone, and far away from home.

He has gone astray. He is lost.

Sound familiar? Ever been there? Isaiah says we all have. We have all gone astray. St. Paul, in the book of Romans in the New Testament, says everyone has “sinned and fallen short of the glory of God.” We have

all woken up blurry-eyed, exhausted, confused…wondering how we arrived at the place we find ourselves.

We, like the young man in Jesus’ parable, have at one time or another, found ourselves far away from home.

Astray. And lost.

The good news is, this isn’t how Jesus ends this parable, this story. Jesus could have ended the story by say something like, “Let this be a warning to you!

The moral of this little story is if you screw up, I’m done with you.” Or he could have said, “Just like the boy in my story, you made your own bed and now you have to lie in it.” Thankfully, this isn’t the way Jesus tells stories! Instead, this lost boy finds his way home. He thinks, he hopes, that the best reception he might be able to receive if he returns home is one of a slave or servant. What he finds as he starts up the path to his home is something more than he ever could have

hoped for in his wildest dreams. As he makes the long walk up to the front door of his home, he looks up to see his father running - Running! - Towards him! And when his father reaches him, he doesn’t start in by berating him or telling him “I told you so!”

Instead, his father throws his arms around him and throws a party for his lost son! A greater welcome no one has ever received. The son was lost, but now he is found. The father feared the son was dead, but has found him alive. This is cause for celebration!

Lent is a time for finding ourselves lost and turning around and heading home.

It is a time for recognizing that St. Paul was right, we have all sinned. It is a time for turning back to God. The Good News is one of the points Jesus was trying to make in his parable: Our God is like the father in this story and when we acknowledge our lostness

and turn towards home, we will find him running to meet us. Not with a sermon or a scolding, but with an embrace of love, grace, mercy, justice, and hope!

Lent reminds us that we all get lost sometimes. And Lent invites us home.

Prayer: Almighty and loving God, thank you for your love. Thank you for the warm embrace we find when we come home.

Please, through the power of the Holy Spirit, continue to call us, convict us, and guide us into your truth.

Thank you for the hope we find in your Son, and our Savior, Jesus, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. Amen.

Pregnancy Care Center of the Northern Big Country 2019 Brunch The Pregnancy Care Center of the Northern Big Country (PCCNBC) annual fundraiser brunch took place Saturday, February 23 at the Haskell Civic Center with close to 200 attending.

Thirty-five door prizes were given by local businesses and individuals.

Lori DeVillez, Executive Director of the Austin Pregnancy Resource Center in Austin, Texas, inspired the group as she spoke about her journey to becoming an active voice for women, children, and families. Lori recounted God’s faithfulness in supporting and expanding the Austin Pregnancy Resource Center and His care and direction in all aspects of her life. Lori gifted each attendee with her book “God Given: An Accounting of Unmistakable Blessings.”

The chosen theme, “Jesus Loves the Little Children”, provided inspiration for beautiful and colorful table decorations. Twenty-eight hostesses from eleven different communities coordinated to plan inviting place settings. Each hostess invited guests and helped raise donations to benefit PCC work. Hostesses included: Hayle Jones, Laurie Newberry, Wanda Thompson, Jamie Ferguson, Sabra Turner, Keila Pearson, and Deshea Sorrells from Haskell; Cherry Pittcock, June Winter, Karen Wilson, Ashley Bell, Kristen Wood, and Jennifer Cochran from Aspermont; Jenny Easterling, Cindy Landreth, Brenda Turner, Julie Petty,

and Linda Hensley from Rule; Renee Dudensing from Sagerton; Tara Moses from Throckmorton; Phyllis Letz from Old Glory; Jennifer White and First Baptist Church of Hamlin; Jimi Coplen and Laressa Earthman from O’Brien; Mary Drury of Rochester; and Tricia Edwards from Jayton.

The brunch menu included choices of breakfast casseroles, miniature cinnamon rolls and muffins, fresh fruit, orange juice, and coffee. PCC board member Sherri Adams of Guthrie facilitated food service with the help of Sara Salinas of Haskell and youth from East Side Baptist Church and First Baptist Church in Haskell; Krysta Bunch, Kara Bunch, Madilyn Moore, Cody Salinas, Mady Salinas, Valarie Andrews, and Brittany Andrews.

Reba Waggoner from Swenson serves as Executive Director for the PCCNBC and Tory Ponder of Haskell is the Assistant Director.

Reba and Tory are available to speak about the PCC services to groups such as civic organizations, group meetings, schools, and churches.

Services include pregnancy testing, non-medical sonograms, childbirth and parenting classes, and counseling. Clients who enroll and complete education classes earn points which can be used to purchase brand new items in the Baby Boutique. Diaper bags, blankets, clothing, accessories and other baby items are stocked in the PCC

Boutique.

Diapers are given away to clients once per month and formula is given as available. Gently used infant and toddler clothing is available as donations are given to the center. The PCC promotes all stages of life.

The Board of Directors include Reba Waggoner, Tory Ponder, Jackie Bingham, Sherri Adams, Laurie Newberry and Renee Dudensing. The PCC is at 706 S. Ave. E in Haskell serving clients from Haskell, Jones, Fisher, Stonewall, Shackelford, Throckmorton, Knox, and Kent Counties. It is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday 10am-4pm.
