Dan Byerly of Capital Farm Credit presented the Stamford Credit Office Scholarship to Kaelyn Bevel, a senior at Haskell High School. She is the daughter of Brad and Kendra Bevel of Haskell. Kaelyn plans to attend Texas Tech University and major in Animal Science. She wrote an essay answering the question: “What involvement have you had in agriculture and how do you think it has benefited you?” She explained how growing up on a farm, her FFA judging activities, and raising and showing livestock have helped her make connections in the agricultural field and have made her who she is today.

One of Jones County’s Gems

BY KAY SPEARS The first time I drove by the building at 120-124 S. Swenson in Stamford, Texas, I almost hit a parked car. I had no idea such a stunning building was in Stamford and I was amazed that its owners had taken such good care of it through the years.

From March of 1929 to the beginning of 1951 the building was known as the Bryant-Link building, home of the Bryant-Link Co. Department Store. It housed the department store and the company’s home offices. John C. Bryant actually began his merchandizing career in the, then, small village of Anson, TX in 1884 with a small hardware store. He had moved to Texas from Missouri with a brother, J. A. Bryant, starting the Bryant Brothers store with their uncle. Even though his brother died just 6 weeks after the Texas move, the store prospered, general merchandise was added, and he took as a partner another brother, W. C. Bryant. W. C. Bryant, however, sold his interest in the venture to George H. Baker.

The Texas Central Railroad progressed from Albany to Stamford, and J. C. Bryant opened a business in Stamford, known as the Baker-Bryant Company in 1900. They incorporated the business and stock was sold. In the early 1900’s the area was growing and the need for stores in other towns was recognized by the Baker-Bryant Co. They kept the Anson store and opened stores in Munday and Aspermont.

From an article in the Stamford American archives of 1925, it was noted, “Merchandise of

all kinds was hauled to these places on wagons and drawn by from two to sixteen head of horses, and cotton was brought back to Stamford by these same wagons. These teamsters were known as freighters and endured many hardships that we of today know nothing of.”

The railroads joined the country together, the Orient being one of the first traversing this area north and south, and in 1906 Bryant opened stores in Rule, Hamlin, Rochester and Lueders. The Aspermont store had burned in 1903 and was re-opened in 1906.

Opening of more stores depended on where the railroad went. In 1909 the Stamford and Northwestern Railroad was built to Spur and stores in Spur and Jayton were opened. The company prospered and more stores were set up.

Knox City in 1914, Post City in 1917, Ralls and Snyder in 1920 and Rotan and Peacock in 1924. Stores were added, due to the oil boom, in Caddo, Breckenridge, Albany and Sipe Springs, but were closed by 1929.

Some of the stores were under different “charters” and in 1920 all the stores were consolidated and the name was changed from Baker-Bryant Co. to BryantLink Co. George S. Link began his career with the company in 1901, managing stores in Aspermont and Rule. In 1925 there were 13 stores and in 1929 there were 18 stores plus a wholesale grocery business. It was said that Bryant never went outside of his stores for a manager or head of a department, in that way he built an organization that was loyal.

The Bryant-Link Co. had the grand opening of the

South Swenson building in March 1929 that included the Stamford Fireman’s Band. The original store was made of stone and had been torn down to make way for the new building. In 1929 the Stamford American ran the headline: Bryant-Link Building is One of Finest Single-Story Structures in State.

The building cost $50,000 in 1929, which calculates to about $739,000 in 2019.

“Built of brick and stone and designed after the Spanish fashion.” It was noted that the firm looked to the future when building and had a roof “so constructed that another story could be added at a later date.” The wide alcoves in the front “provide plenty of room to view the show windows.” Bryant-Link was a true department store with dry goods, men’s clothing, ladies’ ready-to-wear, millinery (ladies’ hats), hardware and groceries. Dry goods could cover many products made of textiles including sheets, towels and bolts of fabric. The grocery section was in the building at 124 S. Swenson, which is joined with the same façade but was originally owned by the 1st National Bank occupying the corner building.

Cotton was traded in the Bryant-Link building and the first Cowboy Reunion was planned in the company’s offices. Bryant was on the original Cowboy Reunion Board.

Bryant was said to be a fair and honest man. His son, R. B. (Bernard) Bryant, was made vice-president and general manager of the company when the new building was erected after working his way up from dry goods clerk in 1907. The last ad found in the Stamford American

M. McDonald Company but their hardware and implement stores would remain open.

The McDonald Company was also a department store and was in business at the same location for many years. Their research trail petered out in the early to mid-1960’s with a listing in the 1962 Stamford telephone book. West Texas Utilities bought the building in 1973. According to the Jones County Appraisal District, the owners of the 120 building have been West Texas Utilities in 1985, AEP Texas North Company 1985-2003 and Stamford ISD 2003 until the present.

The 124 building was sold from W. C. Thompson to AEP Texas North Company in 1990 and then to Care-ALot Home Health Services, Inc. in 1992 and from 5D Partners to Stamford Insurance Agency in 2008.

Long time Stamford resident, Addline Kohout, related a story that original-

ly there were swastikas as ornaments in the tiles outside the Bryant-Link building and when the school bought it, they took the swastikas out. The swastika symbol was used around the world for hundreds of years. It had positive meanings in the western world, such as good luck and prosperity, until the 1930’s when the Nazi Party used it as their emblem. Since then it has represented the ideas of racism, antisemitism and terror. Kohout felt this was the reason for the change.

The Tri-County Education Co-op (325-773-3637) resides at 120 S. Swenson and the building is in the stewardship of the Stamford ISD. Its neighbor, the Stamford Insurance Agency (325-773-2754), is steward of the 124 S. Swenson building. Together they make up an incredible structure and we all appreciate the care taken to preserve the extraordinary architecture we enjoy.

Extension Service to Offer Professional Food Manager Certification Training Course Statistics indicate that foodborne illness continues to be a health issue in the United States. Each year, 1 in 6 Americans will become sick, 128,000 will become hospitalized, and 3,000 will die due to a foodborne illness.

Texas Food Establishment Rules state that each food establishment is required to have one certified food manager on site.

Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service in Taylor, Nolan and Haskell Counties, is offering a professional food manager certification training course.

This two day program will be offered for $125.00 on May 20 and May 21 at the Taylor County Extension Office. Cost includes training, materials, and the Prometric food manager certification examination.

The food manager’s certification will be valid for five years. Only 50 individuals will be accepted into the course. Registration deadline May 6, 2019.

This program is designed to not only prepare foodservice managers to pass the certification examination; it will provide valuable education regarding the safe handling of food. Almost 50 cents of every dollar Americans spend on food is spent on meals prepared away from home. Therefore, careful attention to food safety will help keep customers safe and satisfied.

Foodborne illnesses are

estimated to cost thousands of dollars in lost wages, insurance, and medical bills. With these statistics, knowledge of how to prevent foodborne illness is essential. The benefits of improved food safety include: • Increased customer satisfaction • Improved relationships with health officials • Prevention of bad publicity and law suits due to foodborne illness By attending the course, foodservice managers will learn about: • identifying potentially hazardous foods and common errors in food handling • preventing contamination and cross-contamination of food • teaching and encouraging personal hygiene for employees • complying with government regulations • maintaining clean utensils, equipment and surroundings • controlling pests Foodborne illnesses can be prevented by following simple food safety practices. I hope this has been a day of blessings for all of you with family and friends. The weather has been good with exception of the wind. It seems that the wind likes to blow every day, but guess we should be getting use to it.

(Still don’t like it) Our community was deeply saddened at the passing of a dear lady and a long time friend to many. Funeral service for Helen Lehrmann, 89, of Sagerton was held on Wednesday at the Faith Lutheran Church in Sagerton with burial in the Old Glory Cemetery under the directions of Tankersley Funeral Home. Helen was born in this community the daughter of the late Bernhard and Amanda Letz. She was a graduate of Old Glory High School.

Helen was a very kind and lovely lady who loved her family and enjoyed being granny to her four grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. She is survived by her husband, Clancy, son Steve and wife Karen of Sagerton, daughter, Gail Lehrmann from Parker, CO., brother, Bud Letz of Abilene, Numerous nieces and nephews and a host of friends. Our sincere sympathy to the family.

Don’t forget the musical on Saturday evening, April 27, with the concession stand to open at 5 P M and the program will follow. Come and enjoy a great time with good food, great music and lots of fellowship.

A Modern Day Railroad Do you ever log on to your home internet service, only to be frustrated by how long it takes to load a website, download a song, or stream a movie/ tv show? As you wait on your internet to buffer, you wonder why you’re paying for “high speed” DSL that’s akin to 1990s dial-up internet. That’s assuming you DID get DSL service, and you weren’t told it was “unavailable” in your service area.

As I think about how to bring back our homecomers and attract new businesses and residents, I continually think about our internet problem. Last week, I told you about a USDA-funded research paper by Dr. Christiane von Reichert from the University of Montana. She recommended that rural communities invest in things that help attract young families and pointed to high-speed internet, among other things. With better internet access, a community can attract self-employed and remote workers, creating more jobs without waiting for a major employer to move to town.

The rural internet problem is no secret. It’s also widespread. Late in 2018, the USDA announced $600 million in grants and loans to improve high-speed internet infrastructure in rural America. Some compare rural internet today to the 1930s in America, when electric cooperatives and the federal Rural Electrification Administration delivered electricity to countless rural residents who had been in the dark for years while towns and cities lit up across America.

While this comparison is reasonable, it is also flawed. In 2017, I attended a Q&A session with Anne Hazlett, then chief administrator for USDA Rural Development. Ms. Hazlett pointed out that electricity is a static service—once you have electricity, you

ESSAYS FROM WEST OF 98 James M. Decker have it—while internet is ever changing—a federal agency might provide firstrate internet in 2017 that turned obsolete several years later. Instead, some compare the Internet to the modern-day railroad.

In a 2015 article in The Atlantic, writer Ingrid Burrington pointed to a judge’s description of very early railroads from an 1837 court case: “...they tend to annihilate distance, bringing in effect places that are distant near to each other: tending in their magic influence to the extension of personal acquaintance, the enlargement of business relations, and cementing more firmly the bond of fellowship and union between the inhabitants of the States.”

Sounds like the Internet, doesn’t it? Railroads shortened distances and enlarged personal and business networks, then the Internet did the same, on a scale beyond imagination.

Railroads also picked winners and losers. There is a long list of towns that flourished when the railroad passed through.

Famous Kansas cowtowns like Dodge City wouldn’t exist in American lore if they weren’t the nearest railroad shipping points for Texas cattle.

Closer to home, Stamford boomed as a trading center precisely because it was where the railroads crossed. Then there’s the grim other side of the story—towns passed over for a railroad. Formerly

prosperous frontier communities soon withered on the vine. Many lost their courthouse and county seat to a neighboring town that received the railroad.

Some communities quickly died out. Others held on, but only as a shell of their former self, or as a ghost town relic.

So it goes with our rural communities today. Reliable high speed internet provides more versatile economic options than any point in world history.

Our rural communities, formerly dependent on industries that are struggling or less reliant on physical labor, can chart a new economic path. Geography is no longer an obstacle.

Clients can be served worldwide with phone and email, opening up small businesses far beyond their local client base.

Technology employees can also be dispersed across the world. Instead of living near the job, dealing with commutes and a high cost of living, many workers can live where they choose and connect to the job via high speed internet.

A rural community with a low cost of living, quality schools, and reliable high-speed internet has a fantastic sales pitch for families tired of the city.

But what about the grim other side to the modernday railroad. What about the rural community without decent, readily available internet access? Will it wither on the vine like those hamlets that missed the railroad so many years ago?

Conference Committee To Work Out Differences In State Budget AUSTIN — After Easter weekend, conferees for the Texas House and Senate must work out differences in the two chambers’ versions of a fiscal 2020-2021 state budget to send to Gov. Greg Abbott.

Concurrence is required on how to spend an estimated $250 billion in revenue available to fund the state’s fiscal years 2020-2021. Once an agreement has been reached, the budget bill will be subject to an up or down vote in each chamber before it is forwarded to the governor’s office for final approval.

Speaker Dennis Bonnen on April 15 named five House members to a conference committee tasked with negotiating an agreement. He chose House Appropriations Committee Chair John Zerwas, R-Richmond; and Reps. Greg Bonnen, R-Friendswood; Sarah Davis, R-West University Place; Oscar Longoria, D-Mission; and Armando Walle, D-Houston.

Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who presides over the Senate, on April 17 named five conferees — all Republicans: Senate Finance Committee Chair Jane Nelson of Flower Mound, and Sens. Larry Taylor of Friendswood, Joan Huffman of Houston, Lois Kolkhorst of Brenham and Robert Nichols of Jacksonville.

Nelson, in a report posted by the Senate News Service, looked forward to the work, saying: “Both chambers prioritized property tax relief and public education and I am confident we can finalize a budget that helps homeowners who are struggling with rising property taxes and make sure our schools have the resources needed to give teachers a raise and prepare our students for success.”

While the House and Senate versions of the budget both set aside an additional $9 billion for property tax relief, teacher pay and education, the House version appropriates $251 billion in all funds, including $116.5 billion in general revenue and $2.3 billion from the Economic Stabilization (“Rainy Day”) Fund. In contrast,

the Senate version appropriates $247.7 billion in all funds, including $116.8 billion in general Revenue and no dollars from the Rainy Day Fund.

PROPERTY TAX BILL MOVES The Senate’s property tax reform bill, SB 2, passed the Senate on April 15, was referred to the House Committee on Ways and Means for consideration.

The vote on final passage in the Senate was 18-12, with Sen. Kel Seliger, R-Amarillo, joining Democrats in voting against the measure. One Democrat, Sen. Eddie Lucio of Brownsville, was listed as “present not voting.”

SB 2 would change what is now known as the effective tax rate, that rate at which the entity would earn the exact same amount of revenue as in the previous year, would be renamed to the “no-newrevenue” tax rate. It would also change the term “rollback rate” to “voter-approved rate.” Also, rollback elections would be triggered automatically when rate increases exceed the new limits and would be placed on the November ballot, the Texas Senate News Service reported.

Dubbed “The Property Tax Reform and Relief Act of 2019,” the bill’s main goals are to: (1) Lower the rollback rate from 8 percent to 3.5 percent for most taxing jurisdictions and 2.5 percent for school districts; (2) Require an automatic tax ratification election if the rollback rate is exceeded, eliminating the petition requirement in current statute; (3) Make information about the tax rates proposed by local

taxing units more accessible to property owners and more timely; and (4) Make it easier for property owners to express their opinions about proposed tax rates to local elected officials before tax rates are adopted.

Gov. Abbott, in lauding the movement of SB 2, said he is looking forward to working with Lt. Gov. Patrick, Senate Property Tax Committee Chair Paul Bettencourt, R-Houston, Speaker Bonnen and House Ways and Means Chair Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, and the entire Legislature “to provide lasting property tax relief for all Texans.”

DISASTER DECLARATION ISSUED Gov. Greg Abbott on April 17 issued a State Disaster Declaration for nine Texas counties impacted by recent severe weather, including thunderstorms and tornadoes that caused widespread property damage and the loss of life.

In the declaration, Abbott authorized the use of all available resources of state government and of political subdivisions to aid in response efforts.

“As a result of severe weather over the weekend, Texas is taking action to ensure those impacted have the resources they need to recover as quickly as possible,” said Abbott said.

Counties included in the disaster declaration are: Cherokee, Freestone, Houston, Leon, Madison, Nacogdoches, San Augustine, Shelby and Robertson.

EARLY VOTING TO BE CONDUCTED Texas Secretary of State David Whitley, the state’s chief elections officer, on April 19 encouraged eligible voters to take advantage of the early voting period ahead of the May 4 election.

Early voting begins on Monday, April 22, and ends on Tuesday, April 30. Voters across the state will be casting ballots in local political subdivision elections, including those for mayor, city council, school board, municipal utility districts and other local entities.

HELLO FROM COWBOY COUNTRY

Ok, continuing on with our story of A.J. and Selma Swenson as told in the book, The Swenson Saga and the SMS Ranch by Mary Whatley Clarke: “Four Swenson sons had been born on the small ranch owned by Andrew near Ellerslie, and one was born at Ellerslie. The brothers were Carl A., Eric, Willie Gustaf (Bill), Axel Magnus Godfrey (Swede), and Rudolph. Carl died in 1911. The other four brothers became cowmen of note in the great West Texas ranching country, Rudolph managed the Pitchfork Ranch until his death in an automobile accident in 1942. After the Spur Ranch lands were divided Eric managed the Emery interests until his death in 1970. Bill followed his father as manager of the ranches, and upon his retirement, Swede became manager, and holds that position today (published in 1976).

Andrew was a meticulous worker and kept strict account of all details pertaining to his work on the ranches. Swede prizes a small leatherback Excelsior Diary which his father kept in 1905. Some examples of Andrew’s daily jottings follow: One dozen brooms Dec. 19, 1905. None in store house.

Shaw, unloading corn at Stamford. $2.00 Meanwhile Selma had become homesick for Sweden, so much so that she made the painful decision to leave Texas and move back, taking the three youngest sons with her. In contrast to her parents’ comfortable home and the pleasant round of social events with family and friends in Sweden, life on the ranch seemed especially hard and lonely.

To a saddened Andrew she said, “ I want you to finish up the business here and join me.”

Several months passed by and then Andrew received a letter from Selma. Among other family news, she wrote, “I will be coming home in late summer.” Andrew, who had felt when Selma had told him goodbye, that she and the children would return, sympathized with her. As though it were yesterday, he remembered how he had never felt at home in Texas until he went back to Sweden and gazed on his native land with a man’s mature vision, forever dispelling youthful impressions.

During Selma’s visit to Sweden, Andrew had troubles with cooking on the ranch, and his hired help did not improve the situation. He fed an old Swedish friend so much Post Toasties that the visitor finally asked, “Do you buy this by the barrel?”

That is the last mention of Selma Swenson in the book, but sure enough there is more to their story after she and the children returned to Texas.

Few photos of Selma Augusta Anderson Swenson are known to exist, but I have found a family collection together published in the Swedish book Svenskarne i Texas i ord och bild, 1838-1918, Vol. 2, online from the University of Wisconsin’s Library. This book features other pioneer families that settled the originally named Ericsdale community and can be viewed with the following link: https:// babel.hathitrust.org/cgi/pt?id=wu.89065974966;view=1up ;seq=90 In 1905 A.J and Selma built a beautiful two story house (also pictured in the book online) at 511 E. Oliver Street, mixing features from both the Queen Anne and Classical styles. The Swensons moved from the ranch at Ellerslie and were now able to enjoy the modern conveniences of life in town, not far from quickly growing downtown square, the Stamford Inn, and new ranch headquarters at E. McHarg.

Their sons all attended Stamford Schools, where Swede began his legendary football career, going on to play center at the University of Texas with two unbeaten SWC championships (1918 and 1920), and was later inducted into the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

Selma got to see her children grow up and become cattlemen in their own right, and was there when A.J. became Manager of the SMS ranches in 1922. But, she soon grew ill and spent her last few years suffering complications from kidney and heart trouble. She passed at her home in 1934, two decades before A.J.’s time.

It is said in her obituary (from the Stamford American Vol.11, No. 10, Ed. 1 Friday, June 15, 1934) “A large number of Stamford friends, cowboys from the S.M.S. ranches and cattlemen from the neighboring ranches gathered at the residence at East Oliver Street for the service at 9 am.

A quartet composed of Miss Mary Bryant, Mrs. Josephine Upshaw, R.B. Bryant, and W. J. Buie Jr., sang a hymn, ‘It

is Well With My Soul’… There in the Swedish community hundreds of additional friends gathered to pay their tribute in the final service… (she) was known and loved throughout this area.”

As you can see in the photo, found among A.J.’s personal effects in the SMS office, her gravesite that day was adorned with more flowers than the whole of Texas springtime.

WEST TEXAS TREES AND LANDSCAPES

By Bruce Kreitler and the KWKC Green Team Recently, I had a conversation with somebody concerning a big dead pine tree standing (for now) on a property they had just purchased.

As it happened this tree was probably between fifty and sixty feet tall, and there was plenty of stuff for it to fall on, including the house, within its potential fall radius. As you can imagine, the new property owner had identified that tree as a problem that needs to be dealt with.

While this isn’t the subject I intend to pursue here today, I would like to point out that I think it’s a really good idea to have the landscape inspected, as well as the house, before closing on a new home. I see plenty of examples like this, which really should have been handled by the previous owner, or at least allowed for in the purchase agreement.

Okay…, off my soapbox, and moving on.

One of the things that came up during this discussion was what kind of pine we were looking at, and the species of pines that can grow here in the Big Country, in general.

I’m pretty sure the pine we were discussing was a slash pine, which explained its impressive height, the fact that

it had pretty large branches at the top, and that there was a lot of clear branch between the ground and the first branch. It may have also explained a lot about why it was deceased, but in this case I think its failure wasn’t because it was a slash pine, but probably for some other reason.

Most of us are familiar, at some level or another, with the piney woods of East Texas. When you drive through that area, and notice the pines, they can be all kinds of different species.

Here, in West Texas, ninetyfive percent of the time, if you see a pine tree, it’s going to be an afghan pine, or Pinus elderica. The reason that East Texas has a lot of species diversity, as far as pine trees go, and we don’t, is because of the differences in the climate and growing conditions. The majority of pine species are going to be trees that prefer an acid soil, plenty of rainfall, and higher humidity levels. If you think about it, that doesn’t describe the area we live in. We have low humidity levels, fairly low annual rainfall, which comes sporadically, at best, and most importantly, we have alkaline soils. The reason that most of our pine trees are afghan pines is because those pines are one of the few pine species that actually likes alkaline soil. Not only that, but the afghans are also plants that don’t like a lot of water, much preferring drier climates. That does sound like us, ergo, the plethora of afghan pines throughout our region. Unfortunately, the afghans are so well adapted to our area, and do so well here, that we planted millions of them, and now, insects and diseases that prey on

them have moved into our area. Kind of a “build it and they will come” type thing.

We built a large population of afghan pines where none existed before, and voila, suddenly their pests and diseases showed up.

Other than the afghan pines, we have some pinion pines, loblolly pines, slash pines, and a few other random pine species here and there. There are other pines that can grow here, such as italian stone pines and japanese black pines, but it’s awfully hard to find them. More and more, plant availability is focusing on numbers of commonly used plants and getting away from a broad selection. The reasons for this are economic, and while it might be easy to blame the growers for this, I’m not sure it’s all their fault.

The pine species that I find curious, of the ones that might grow here, is the slash pine. As I’ve already mentioned, we have some pretty large slash pines scattered randomly through the region.

What I find so interesting about that is that their tolerance for our growing conditions, seems to vary from individual plant, to individual plant, instead of across the species. Some of them thrive from day one, and those are the ones that get big, yet others struggle, never attain much in the way of size, and at some point, just fail. You can see slash pines, which are somewhat distinctive by their large bark scales and tendency to grow tall, straight, trunks, which will be relatively free of branches except in the top third of the tree. It’s not unusual at all to see these plants struggling to live, with very pale green, or nearly yellow, needles.

The ones you see like that are suffering from chlorosis, which means that they aren’t handling our alkaline soil well at all. On the other hand, it’s also not unusual to find this same species, growing somewhere, with deep green foliage, obvious good vigor, and some pretty impressive size and height. Sometimes, until the struggling one finally gives up, you can even see these examples side by side. Two trees of the same species, likely coming from the same nursery, at the same time, raised side by side and pretty much identical, having completely different reactions to being planted in West Texas.

Personally, I would love to know just what it is about slash pines, that determines, on an individual level, which ones thrive here, and which ones just can’t make it.

Somehow, I doubt that I, or anybody else, will ever know what that factor is. Too bad.

I bet that whatever it is, we (tree types) would find it to be very useful information.

Accept Second Chances This week I want to talk about the concept of getting a second chance. I have written several times over in this column about taking a chance in something that you want to pursue, but I mostly never talk about what happens if and when one fails at life, especially when it is something major that has happened. DependTHOUGHTS FROM ing on the situation, a second chance is not always guaranUNDER THE CAP teed and can even be taken for granted by a person. Whether it Will McClure is a student that has performed poorly on a test or a person that has lost touch with his or her family, even when given the opportunity for a second chance many do not take it and essentially waste a chance to try again or, in some cases, seek forgiveness. To take things a step further, those that do even try again may be so incredibly scared of failing again that they either immediately give up at the first sign of trouble or don’t even try as hard as they did the first time around.

Failure is a part of life and, regrettably, we have come to let failure cloud our minds and make us afraid to take the next step no matter what the situation may be. Going back to the student example, there are many students that have taken the “first round” of STAAR testing a couple of weeks ago.

Among those students were some that had to take the test again after failing previously. While these students have been given a second chance and some embrace it, some take it as a sign that they will fail again and with “never” pass the test.

While I did address this idea in my column on testing and the difficulty of the tests in general, I know many teachers that try to quickly remove the idea of failure from these students’ minds and remind them that they need to continue to do their very best and make the most of their second chance. To take the examples a further step with relationships, there are many people out there that feel like they have failed time and time again with relationships with family and also in love. Even when some think that they have found their “happily ever after,” many times a relationship can fall apart. During this time, one side may try to offer the other a second chance at a relationship or even a chance to become friends, but can be ruined when one side cannot let go or even say or do something that there is no going back from. After a ruined relationship, one may feel like there is no one out there for them even when given a chance to try again with a fresh start. They just keep going back to the former, now long-ago, relationship and feel like they will never find it again with anyone else. However, even if one has done all of these things and feel like there is no going back, just taking a second chance when it presents itself can lead to wonderful things, even if at first one thinks nothing will ever happen.

All I am saying here is that a second chance can be a wonderful thing if one does not let past failures overcome their confidence. The first step of getting, or even giving, a second chance is acceptance. Accept the failures, focus on the positives, and move into a new opportunity with all of the willpower you can muster to make sure the second chance ends up with a positive result. Second chances are not always guaranteed and they may take even more work the second time around; but as long as you have the heart, determination and even a little patience, a second chance can just be the start of a brand new chapter in life.

Cary Banks of Lubbock has been a professional musician 53 years. He is an award winning songwriter and music educator. His music has had a great influence on the Texas music scene. His first gig was at a theater where he and his group played before the midnight monster movie.

“I was paid 5 dollars and thought it couldn’t get any better than this.

My teenage eyes looked at the crowd and they were all smiling, enjoying the music. My course was set right there.”

Cary was with the Maines band as a pianist and guitarist. He spent ten years on the road performing with Barbara Mandrell and other famous musicians. He has an album titled “Piano” which features him playing the grand piano in his living room. He plays it every day. After his years as a traveling musician, he taught at South Plains College, known for its country music sequence.

Cary retired after 23 years at South Plains but

A Prom To Remember continues to perform around Lubbock.

He has written a book about his experiences titled Almost A Professional.

It’s just out.

The book has photos and stories.

One story is about a 1982 high school prom that has become a Lubbock legend. He was with the Maines Brothers Band then.

“Some high school students got together and decided to stage their own independent prom.

I think maybe there were 50 or 60 students and their dates. These mavericks pooled their money together, got their parents to chaperone, rented The Cotton Club on the Slaton highway and hired the Maines Brothers Band.

“This was on a Friday night before the big Tornado Jam Joe Ely was having in Lubbock on

Saturday night. We were scheduled to play from nine to midnight.

So we were up there playing, kids were having a good time. About 11 o’clock in strolled Joe Ely with Linda Ronstadt and the whole Ely entourage. They get up on stage and started singing.

It was awesome. Ely had a habit of doing that. He would just show up and the crowd would go crazy.

The kids were looking t each other and saying, ‘Is Linda Ronstadt singing at our prom?’

“There were 18 of us on stage and it was going great. Somebody took a picture of the event but

I wasn’t in it. The guy in front of me was whacking on a cowbell with a drumstick and I had to duck to keep from getting hit with that flying drumstick.

“About midnight the flunky that was in charge of the club that night came out there and said, ‘Twelve o’clock, time to shut it off.’ Everybody had a fit. Knowing Ely, that jam would have gone on until wee hours of the morning. But this guy just went over there and turned off the power.

They named the flunky Mr. Soul.

“Probably counting parents and everybody there was maybe a hundred fifty people total. Since then I’ve met thousands of people who say, ‘I was there that night.’ It became an urban myth for Lubbock.”

The Stamford Bulldogs fell behind early and couldn’t come back in a 13-9 loss to Haskell on Friday. The first inning saw Haskell score 8 runs on a walk by Evan Green, an error, a walk by Reed Roewe, a single by Koby Compton, a walk by Marc Williams, a fielder’s choice during Aaron Skiles’s at bat, a single

by Wyatt Carmichael. Roewe also had a single in the second inning.

Despite the loss, Stamford did collect seven hits in the high-scoring affair. Unfortunately, Haskell had 11 hits on the way to victory.

The Bulldogs notched three runs in the fourth inning, driven by a sacrifice fly by Josh Mueller and by Kaleb Flick. Reagan Detamore went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead Stamford in hits.

Both pitching staffs had their hands full, frequently dealing with runners on base. The Bulldogs collected eight hits and Haskell had nine.

Haskell got things moving in the first inning, when Compton singled on a 0-1 count, scoring two runs.

Haskell scored three runs in the seventh inning. Medford and Compton all moved runners across the plate with RBIs in the inning.

Duran was the winning pitcher for Stamford. He went two and two-thirds innings, allowing zero runs on one hit and striking out three. Peyton Bevel threw one inning in relief out of the bullpen. Bevel recorded the last three outs to earn the save.

Carmichael took the loss for Haskell. He allowed zero hits and zero runs over two-thirds of an inning, striking out two and walking zero.

Olson started the game for Haskell. He surrendered eight runs on five hits over four and a third innings, striking out four. Bryson Holt started the game for Stamford.

He allowed six hits and five runs over three and a third innings, walking one.

Stamford tallied eight hits on the day. Tully Hughes and Duran each collected multiple hits for Stamford Bulldogs.

Haskell racked up nine hits. Roewe and Silvas each managed multiple hits for Haskell.

Victory at the Cross Luke 9: 27 says: “But I tell you the truth, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the kingdom of God.” And Luke 9: 18-20 says: “After the miracle of feeding the five thousand, Jesus had been alone praying when His disciples joined Him. Jesus asked, who do the crowds say that I am?

They answered, John the Baptist, but some say Elijah; and others say that one of the old prophets has risen again. He said to them, but who do you say I am? Peter answered and said, You are the Christ, the Son of the Living God.” Jesus knew the people would be talking about the miracle. But who did they think performed it?

By Paul Wright they see the kingdom of God.” I find myself thinking “What did Jesus mean?

His disciples died a long time ago and we are still waiting to see the kingdom of God.” Before revelation, I assumed he was speaking of heaven, but in actuality, He was referring to retrieved authority.

You see, in the beginning, when Adam sinned, the authority and dominion God had given man was transferred to Satan.

Jesus came to retrieve this authority.

The Bible says in 1 John 3: 8 “For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.”

After this miracle of feeding the multitudes,

Jesus said, “I tell you truly, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see the authority of God.” He was speaking of His victory at the cross. It was drawing near.

Luke 9:28-31 says: “Now it came to pass, about 8 days after these sayings, that He took Peter, John, and James and went up on the mountain to pray. As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. And behold, two men talked with Him, who were Moses and Elijah, who appeared in glory and spoke of His deceased which He was about to accomplish at Jerusalem.”

This passage is often referred to as the Transfiguration. As He prayed and talked with His two visitors, the countenance of Jesus changed this day.

I think the most interesting thing is their choice

of words “deceased” and “accomplish” in the same sentence. The words “endure” and “suffer” might seem more appropriate, but not the word accomplished, right?

Wrong! But I tell you, truly, there are some standing here who shall not taste death till they see God. His disciples didn’t understand. Then a week later, a couple of cheerleaders from heaven encouraged Jesus of what was about to take place. Moses and Elijah spoke with Him about His coming death, which was about to be ACCOMPLISHED at Jerusalem.

Their mission was to encourage our Savior, for He was about to retrieve authority for all humanity for all time! His death on the cross, as hard as it might be in the flesh, was going to be a great victory for God and man.

In Hebrews 12: 1-2 says: “Therefore, since we are

surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles.

And let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us, fixing our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfecter of faith. For the Joy set before him he endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” What I want you to understand is that He looked ahead at the victory that would be accomplished.

He wasn’t focused on the cross itself, or the pain of the moment. Instead, His focus was on the resurrection! The passage said that He “endured the cross” which is absolutely true.

But Moses and Elijah came to remind Him of His purpose – He was about to accomplish the greatest victory that has ever been or ever will be. The cross wasn’t easy and God

didn’t want His Son to lose heart, so He sent these messengers to remind Him His coming decease would be a great victory.

No wonder His countenance changed. As He prayed, the appearance of His face was altered, and His robe became white and glistening. Listen my friends, Our countenance changes too when our focus and meditation is on the right thing (our victory in Christ.)

I pray as you go about your week, you be encouraged in knowing that God has rallied all of heaven behind you and me that we might run with endurance that race that is set before us.
