Council Discusses City Employee Pay During Special Session The Stamford City Council held a special called session last Monday evening, July 9th, after the last regular meeting that was to be held July 2nd was canceled. The council met to discuss items that were to be covered during the July 2nd meeting as well as announce an official proclamation that will be presented later in the week. Mayor James Decker called the meeting to order at 5:15 pm with Councilmember Dennis Braden absent for the evening and began the

meeting with the invocation, followed by the Pledge of Allegiance. Decker then formally began the meeting by asking if there were any citizen’s comments. With there being none, Decker continued by announcing that on Friday, July 13th will be declared Marge Barnett Day in honor of the former Cowboy Country Museum Board Member and Carnegie Library Director’s 97th birthday. After reading the proclamation, Decker stated that it would be presented to Barnett at the Cowboy Country Museum on Friday, July 13th at 10:30 am with the public

invited to attend.

The meeting then moved forward with looking over the minutes of the last regular meeting on June 18th as well as the minutes of the special called session on June 25th. With no need for corrections, the council voted unanimously to approve the minutes as presented. The next item was for the council to look over Ordinance 908, which covered the city’s structural standards.

Hi, Y’all! I hope you’re having a good week.

I know everything is finally starting to calm down after all the rodeo excitement, but we are kicking it back up at the library next week with our Children’s Summer Reading Club!

The theme this year is “LIBRARIES ROCK!” So naturally our books and activities are all about Rock & Roll music. Please join us next week, July 16-20, 1:30-3:00 each day, for some stories, crafts, and other fun activities. Children ages 5-10 are welcome to attend.

On Monday, we will be reading Violet’s Music by Angela Johnson, and we’ll be making our own musical instruments!

Tuesday, we’ll be learning about the roots of rock music, the blues, with the book Muddy by Michael Mahin, and we’ll design our own blues album covers.

On Wednesday, we’ll learn about Stamford’s favorite Rock & Roller with the book Elvis by Bonnie Christensen. We’ll enjoy some of “The King’s” best songs and make scratch art gold records.

Thursday, we will be reading Gus & Me by Keith Richards and learning how the rock legend’s grandfather taught him to play guitar, then we’ll make our own guitars to rock out with.

On Friday we will finish up with the book Rock & Roll Highway by Sebastian Robertson, listen to some live acoustic guitar while we paint some Big Country ROCKS to take out on the road and share with the community.

Mark your calendars for 1:30-3:00 all next week, we’re going to have a great time!

07/04/2018 Sergeant Alfaro responded to a dog bite call. Calling party stated a juvenile had been bitten by a family pet. Incident report was taken and pet was quarantined for observation.

07/05/2018 Deputy Soliz responded to a theft call. Calling party stated that a known person obtained and used their debit card without authorization. Report taken.

07/06/2018 Deputy Steckly responded to a suspicious activity call. Calling party stated that female was walking alongside the highway and appeared to be distressed. Deputy Steckly made contact with the female who did not show signs of distress and was near her residence.

City Manager Alan Plumlee stated that the ordinance was mostly the same, but on the recommendation of the Texas Communities Group that provides code enforcement for the city, the ordinance would shift power to condemn a property from a special zoning board to the City Council itself where the city’s elected officials will have final say. As such, the ordinance was reworded to reflect this change in addition to a change where if a contested case is brought to the council and a member has not looked over the case, they would not be able to vote or take part in the decision-making process. After a brief discussion on the wording for alterations which need to adhere to the building code, the council voted to approve the ordinance as presented.

The next item on the agenda was the next budget workshop for the upcoming fiscal year.

Plumlee stated that he had taken in the suggestions of the council from the previous meetings, but stated more needed to be put in before he could formally draft a budget and was still looking for recommendations from the council. The main topic of the workshop concerned employee pay raises as well as an increase in medical insurance. Plumlee presented projected costs of pay raises, which were dependent on the council’s final decision. Plumlee stated that if the council went with a $1

pay raise across the board as was done the previous year, the projected increase would be $55,655 while a 3% increase would amount to $28,111 and a 4% would be $37,481. In addition, medical insurance would increase by $20,730 regardless of the pay increase. While there was not much discussion on the pay increase, which would be a big item along with a new dump truck for the city, the council did discuss the medical insurance increase. Decker asked if the city may be able to raise its deductible with the insurance company, with the employee maintaining the same deductible as before, which in turn would cause the rates to go down. Plumlee stated that he could look into it, but was not sure of the outcome.

Plumlee would go on to state that he was able to pull out $30,000 from expenses for lake line repair, stating that the lines had a one-year warranty on them which would be no cost to repair during that time.

Also, Plumlee stated that the Hach contract to test water treatment equipment, totaling $23,000 for three years, could be made over the three years in yearly payments. With that said, Decker asked about financing of the EMS service with the closing of hospital in patient and emergency services. Plumlee stated that the hospital district would still contribute funds as normal, with a possibility for more since

there will be less overhead moving forward. However, it was also stated that the EMS vehicles would need to be better to consistently transport patients to hospitals in Anson, Haskell, or Hamlin as well as a potential need to hire more paramedics to be available when one unit is out on call. At this point, there is only speculation and nothing would be for certain until a later date. The workshop formally concluded with the statement that a draft budget would be completed on July 20th with a public hearing for the budget set for August 6th. August 20th would feature the first reading of the budget as well as discuss a proposed tax rate. September 4th would be the first public hearing on the tax rate as well as the second reading of the budget and that September 7th would feature the second public hearing on the tax rate with the adoption on September 17th. With there being no meeting on July 16th due to Plumlee being away on business, the council decided to hold a meeting the following week on July 23rd at the regular time of 5:15 pm to review the drafted budget before the first public hearing in August.

The meeting then moved forward with the consent agenda which featured a lake lot lease transfer, new lake lot lease, and eight property bids. After looking over the bids, Plumlee stated that he would like the bid for the property

on 514 N. McKinley to be removed and rejected as the structure could be salvaged while Decker asked to reject the bids for the properties located on 410 N. Wetherbee, 412 E. Davenport, and the southeast intersection of E. Reynolds and N. Anson as the lots could be cleared and combined with other vacant lots. As such, the council voted to approve the remaining four bids as presented along with the lake lot lease and transfer while also voting to reject the requested bids.

The final item was a brief City Manager’s Report with City Manager Alan Plumlee stating that his report was given during the workshop earlier in the evening, but did add that the Texas Cowboy Reunion did well once again and that, aside from continuing to work on the budget, he had a meeting with contractors on future construction of water pumps and the new water treatment plant.

With that said and no other business to conduct, the Stamford City Council adjourned for the evening at 6:27 pm.

DEATH NOTICE

Amador Guerrero, 80, of Abilene and formerly of Stamford passed away on Thursday, July 5, 2018 in Abilene.

Funeral Mass was said on Monday, July 9, 2018 at 10:30 a.m. at the St. Ann’s Catholic Church in Stamford with Father Chacko Thadathil officiating. Burial followed at the Highland Memorial Cemetery under the direction of Tankersley Funeral Home. A visitation was held on Sunday, July 8, 2018 from 12:30 until 4:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

HELLO FROM COWBOY COUNTRY By Jewellee Kuenstler Another Rodeo in the books! What a wonderful time! I think of Rodeo like Christmas (minus the religious aspect). You spend the entire month of June preparing, going to parties, getting ready, then the Rodeo happens and when it is over, it is kind of a mixed feeling of relief and sadness. Relief that life might slow down a bit, and sadness that it will be a whole ‘nother year until it comes around again.

When we talk about the Texas Cowboy Reunion, cowboys, ranching, and early-day settlers, we tend to focus on the men. But at least half the settlers were women, and they played an equally important part. In 1949 the Stamford American interviewed one of these ladies, and her story was pretty unique. I’d like to share this tale with you, just to give you an idea of what life was like at the turn of the century in this area from a woman’s perspective. Mrs. E. M. Douthit was a member of the Texas Cowboy Reunion Association through her husband and remained a member for decades after her husband’s death.

Mrs. Douthit was born to Mr. and Mrs. P.M. Arnold, who were ranchers. They moved to Jones County in 1894. They lived near the Jones, Shackelford County line, close to what would eventually become Lueders.

When asked about Stamford, her response was, “There was no Stamford…”

She reminisces that at that time, there were no towns except Anson, and the cow ranches were about ten miles apart on the creeks.

She explains that ranch houses were always built by a spring or big water holes.

She further describes the early homes, “The houses consisted of one room built of lumber hauled from Weatherford, or rock, or a dugout in the south side of a hill, covered with poles and dirt. There were no churches in Jones county,

outside of Anson, but a small school house on the county line 25 miles southeast of Stamford. My father owned the land on which the school house was built and my mother taught the school as long as we lived there. She taught in every school house east side of the county, until 1900, when she retired after 31 years teaching.”

Mrs. Douthit pointed out that the ranches were far apart, so she rode everywhere on her Spanish pony.

At times it could be lonely, and she remembers that the social highlight of the year would be the spring and fall round ups. “When the boys would come for the roundups, there would be dances at the ranches and we would dance all night. Some mothers were strict and made their daughters cook breakfast for the cowboys before heading back home to their own beds, but my mother was a good mother and let me go home to bed after the dance.”

At that time, the country was covered up with prairie dog towns, rattlesnakes, and coyotes. After getting her teaching certificate, Mrs. Douthit was employed by the King Ranch on Chimney Creek. It was on this ranch that she first laid eyes on the best-looking cowboy she had ever seen, “[There was] a cowboy with black curly hair and moustache, yes, indeed, moustache – so, I married him (and I might add, lived happily ever after).”

After they were married, her husband went to work for the B Bar E ranch, located about two miles from the Lueders town site. Later, as they started a family, her husband gave up cow punching and settled down to farming. “I have seen dry years and wet years – poor years and lean years, but God has been good to me through them all.”

When this interview was conducted in 1949, Mrs. Douthit proudly pro-

claimed, “I have attended all the Cowboy Reunions and never fail to meet old friends of cowboy days and later, enjoyed reminiscing.

I certainly expect to attend this year. I enjoy the girls riding. Really, the bronc busting and roping and cutting do not compare with the old days on the range, when the women and children would go to the nearest roundup, eat dinner at the chuck wagon, watch the boys cut and brand, and run pony races when the day’s task was done.”

Remembering the early ranching days in eastern Jones County, Mrs. Douthit recalls the ranches that were closest to them, “[There was] the Heart L on Cottonwood Creek, the PB connected on Chimney Creek, the OLD on Long Creek, JP connected [to it], and the BRB on the Clearfork where Nugent now is.”

But she was quick to add that cattle were not the only livestock competing for grazing in this area.

“There were a few sheep men in the country at that time. They had no abiding place, just drove their herd to the best grass they would find. The cowman hated the sheep men with a deadly hatred. [It was] said ‘the cowman drinks out of his hat and the sheep man out of his shoe.’ If the girls danced with a sheep man it was too bad; the cowboys left her alone.”

When asked about the character of the cowboys she had known, her reply was, “As to the tales we hear of the cowboys being

outlaws it is all a fable. As a class, the cowboys were the most honorable, accommodating and chivalrous class of men I’ve ever known, and women were held in the highest regards. Some few of them did get drunk and shoot their guns when they got to town, which was two and three months apart, but not all by any means.”

With a happy smile, and a look of contentment, Mrs. Douthit said, “We raised nine average children, sometimes good and sometimes bad. My life has been a happy one, and if I had the chance to live it over and choose the place, I would surely choose the ‘Wild West’!”

Jones County Burn Ban in Effect Adopted July 9, 2018 The Jones County Commissioners Court finds that circumstances present in all or part of the unincorporated area of the county create a public safety hazard that would be exacerbated by outdoor burning and has enacted a burn ban for the next 90 days.

The burn ban restricts any outdoor burning consisting of an exposed flame. Violation of the Court’s Order is a Class C Misdemeanor, punishable by a fine not to exceed $500.00 This prohibition is for 90 days from the date of adoption of this Order, unless the restrictions are terminated earlier based on a determination made by the Texas Forest Service or this Court. This Order is adopted pursuant to Local Government Code §352.081, Here we are with another fourth of July behind us and another year for the Texas Cowboy Reunion and all the events. As I understand this was a good year for the TCR, lots of folks enjoyed the rodeo and all the other events.

The weather was hot, but it could have been worse. It all started with a good parade and from there Stamford was a busy place.

The Message of the Prophets The prophetic message is one that was given in order to restore and warn the people of their complete disobedience to Yahweh.

The books of the prophets (Isaiah through Malachi) in the Bible can be hard to read at times. And because of this different genre of literature that is displayed, many tend to jump over them way too quickly. However, within these sacred writings we discover the complete sovereignty of the LORD of Heaven and Earth.

The main message can easily be summed up by the three indictments that are so common and repetitive throughout both the Major and Minor Prophets.

Idolatry, social injustice and religious ritualism were the

major themes that Yahweh condemned through the prophetic message. The covenant relationship was created and formed to not be broken (Deut. 30:17-18), but because of the sin of the Israelite people, they were called to repent and turn to Yahweh for forgiveness and a restored relationship.

Although these three major themes were the central highlights of the prophetic message between 800 and 400 B.C, these three indictments are still foundational points of human failure today in and outside of the Church. We as followers of Christ should always read the Bible with the mindset and motivation for application in our own individual

lives. When we do this, we have a greater chance of not only being hearers of God’s Word but also doers of His Word (James 1:22).

Idolatry is the sin that so easily trips up every follower of Christ. Apparently the same was true in the day of the prophets. Instead of following the One True God the people turned to false gods and worshiped idols instead of Yahweh (Jer. 4:1).

God is a jealous God (Exod.

34:14) and He created each of us uniquely, so He wants to know us and lead us in this world that He created (Ps. 32:8). When we put other things before Him, we are not honoring God and making Him number one in our life. Anything can become an idol in our

Except for finalizing the accounting and cleaning up the aftermath, the 88th Texas Cowboy Reunion is in the books, so I wanted to say a few words about this year’s event and what the event means in general.

In 1930, amidst the Great Depression, thirteen community leaders met in Stamford to propose a celebration to boost morale and stimulate the local economy. These leaders organized an event, centered around Independence Day, that would promote the legacy of the West Texas cowboy, a way of life that was quickly disappearing in the face of 20th century mechanization. That first year, 12,000 people watched three days of rodeo events and participated in cowboy fellowship and historical commemoration.

The event quickly took off. Permanent facilities were built. In 1935, legendary cowboy humorist Will Rogers performed at

the TCR in one of his last public appearances before his death. In 1937, at the peak of rural populations, a record 70,000 visitors attended. Wild cow milking, double mugging, the grand entry, and the signature cloverleaf pattern of modern barrel racing were invented in the rodeo arena at Stamford. In 1940, the newly-formed American Quarter Horse Association held its first show in Stamford.

Will Rogers described the TCR as a “real cowboy reunion…in a real cowtown.” Today, current TCR leadership and the many dozens of volunteers strive to uphold the mission of the thirteen founders and the vision so eloquently described by Rogers. That mission is why, in my humble opinion, the TCR continues to persevere.

As rural populations have declined, many rodeos and other small town cultural events have struggled to succeed and some have disappeared entirely. The TCR has had its struggles, but this year, in five days, it is estimated that over

20,000 people visited the grounds and the event is growing each year in attendance, rodeo competitors, and sponsorship dollars.

The TCR was never intended to be a local rodeo, or even just a rodeo for the sake of having a rodeo. That’s why it was named the “Texas Cowboy Reunion.” The rodeo performances are an integral part, but above all, the TCR is designed to celebrate one of the most enduring images of America, the Texas cowboy. For 88 years, the event has brought together multiple generations of cowboys and non-cowboys, locals and non-locals, rural people and city people, from far and wide, all for that purpose.

The world has changed since 1930 and so has the TCR. Outdoor events in July are hot in an airconditioned world and rodeos now compete against movies, sporting events, lake activities, and other recreation for entertainment dollars. To stay relevant in 2018, the presentation of the TCR has

life. In our contemporary culture that we live in, the love of sports, cellphones, social media and the love of money are just a few examples of idolatry. These things can easily take our attention away from God and become our number one priority in life. We must be careful not to allow this to happen, because Christ our LORD deserves all of the attention and wants to be first place in our lives.

Idolatry is condemned throughout the Bible and we must hear the message and put Christ above all else (Matt. 6:33).

Social injustice was another key theme found in the message of the prophets. The people at the time were not showing and

So here’s to those original thirteen founders: Andrew John Swenson, William G. Swenson, Ray Rector, Rudolph Swenson, John Selmon, A. C. Cooper, F. Harley Goble, R. B. Bryant, W. G. Owsley, Charles E. Coombes, R. V. Colbert, Louie M. Hardy, and Roy Arledge. 88 years later, their legacy endures. May it continue to endure for another 88 years.

PASTOR’S PEN caring for the oppressed and fallen that were around them (Jer. 7:5). In our contemporary setting we can see much of this today.

That’s why it is very important that we truly follow Jesus’s command to love our neighbor (Matt. 22:39).

Through Jesus Christ, God has given us every spiritual blessing and we have been shown the greatest amount of grace known to man. We are given the opportunity to have a relationship with the Creator of the Universe through God’s justice. In the same manner we must carry our vertical relationship with Christ out into the dark world that surrounds us and build horizontal relationships through the love of Christ.

Being the Good Samaritan (Luke 10:25-37) and loving others is what we are called to do. We must work for social justice as we continue in the spreading of God’s Kingdom on earth.

Religious Ritualism is something that was highly condemned in the message of the prophets, and we can definitely see the same for today (Hos. 6:6, Isa. 1:12).

So many denominations and different sects of the Church look to worship God by ritual and tradition.

Unfortunately they miss the biggest point of all, the ritual and sacrifice has already taken place at Calvary through the Spotless Lamb’s Blood. We shouldn’t parade in God’s Church with ceremony but instead look to Worship Him in Spirit and in Truth, for that is what He calls us to

By Dalton Mathis do (John 4:24). We should focus less on ritual and more on Christ Jesus the One who came and fulfilled the sacrifice and ritual that stands forever and ever (John 19:30).

Every part of the Word of God from Genesis 1:1 to Revelation 22:21 is given to us for our benefit and we can apply it in our everyday life. It’s amazing how that is, I guess Christ truly knew what he was saying when he said “Heaven and earth may disappear, but the Word of the LORD remains forever.” (Matt. 24:25). The prophet’s writings in the Bible are so very important, and I encourage you to read them for yourself.

This week try your best to cast out the idols that are getting in between you and your relationship with the Savior. Show mercy to others because Christ Jesus has given you the mercy that will never end.

And lastly make sure you don’t just go through the motions and go to church in order to check it off your “to-do list” but instead seek the Spirit and truly allow Him to change your heart.

“What does the LORD require of you? To act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” (Micah 6:8).

Prednisone Can Have Powerful Side Effects

DEAR DR. ROACH: An 80-year-old was mistakenly prescribed prednisone, 40 mg, for six months and is now being weaned off over four weeks. While on the prednisone, she had some symptoms that I think are side effects, including sleeping all day, no energy, losing weight (30 pounds over six months without trying), hair falling out, thinning skin, hallucinating and bumping into the wall, causing bruises.

She is scared of the dark, does not want to be left alone and gets confused. Her blood sugar has gone up dramatically (A1c from 6.7 to 11). Will these symptoms get better once she is weaned off the prednisone?

-- D.K. ANSWER: Most of the symptoms you describe are plausible side effects of a large dose of prednisone in an older person. Prednisone is a powerful anti-inflammatory and immune system suppressant that is used for many conditions. However, it has the potential for many side effects. Although more often people can get jittery and jumpy from prednisone, fatigue is certainly possible.

Hair and skin changes and easy bruising are routine. What puzzles me, though, is the weight loss, since weight gain is much more common. I assume she was known to be diabetic before, since her A1c level was consistent with controlled diabetes.

The worsening of the blood sugar control suggests worsening insulin resistance, which usually is due to weight gain, not loss. The confusion and hallucination are less common, but more concerning side effects.

It is very disturbing that these effects have been going on for six months, apparently without being addressed. Worse still, the medication was given as a mistake? I don’t know the whole story, but it sounds very disturbing.

DEAR DR. ROACH: I am a 68-year-old male, 5 feet, 7 inches tall, weighing 160 pounds, who for years has done a 2.5-mile daily walk (always upon rising), plus occasional bicycling, with no problems. For the past two weeks, I’ve experienced pain within the sole of my left foot, below the heel, most sensitive when rising from a reclining or sitting position. If I slowly but gradually put weight on it, I can eventually walk on it with reduced pain (and still get in my 2.5-mile walk uneventfully). The pain never goes away completely, and throughout the day is consistently stronger after the foot has been idle. The other foot is normal. I have no history of leg or foot injuries. That first step in the morning is when the pain is greatest. Thoughts on possible causes? -- K.B.

By Dr Keith Roach, M.D. ANSWER: I am pretty sure this is plantar fasciitis, based on your description, although an exam may help you be sure.

It is common in people who exercise, and hard surfaces (and old or poorly designed shoes) may make it more common.

Initial treatment is ice and rest. Careful stretching of the calf and sole will help, but don’t overdo it, especially when starting. You need to slow down the exercising for a while -- athletes, especially runners, never like to hear this, but your body needs time to heal. A short course of anti-inflammatory medicine, such as naproxen, may be helpful. Silicone heel cups help many people.

If these don’t help, a visit with your foot specialist is indicated. They have other treatments they can use.

Be Reliable This week I want to talk about a subject that I think gets overlooked a lot and that is the notion of being reliable. In the past, I don’t think this was as big of a problem as it wasn’t as easy to let someone know that you will not be able to do something.

Now we have email, social media, mobile phones and even simple text messages where it just becomes way too easy to let someone down.

I’m not saying that everybody does this, but there are a lot of people that take advantage of finding an “easy way out” and leaving someone Will McClure hanging. On the other hand, having these tools at our disposal allows for easier communication where, if given enough time, a person can let others know that other arrangements need to be made. Sometimes it can be inconvenient, but at least the message can be sent.

If one does not take just a minute to send a simple text message to a friend or a boss letting them know of an issue, then you end up sending that person into a scramble to find a way to get the task done. I’m sure that we have all been on both sides of that particular coin before, and it is not fun to be on either.

Reliability is such a small thing, but yet it makes a huge difference. Being reliable shows a potential employer, a friend, or even your family that you can be called upon to help out somewhere where, eventually, the favor can be returned in some way. I’m not saying that a favor will absolutely be owed, but the fact that you were there and helped when needed is not easily forgotten. On that same idea, no one can expect you to drop everything every single time to do something. Even in a job when you are given things to do, you may not get everything done in a single day; however, the key words are “reliability” and “consistency” here because if you can prove that you can do tasks reliably and consistently, missing something every once in a while can be forgiven under the right circumstances as the person that you are helping can understand things coming up.

What I am trying to say here is that being reliable is a great trait to have in a person. Not everyone is going to be 100% reliable all of the time, but being consistently reliable will elevate you in the eyes of the person you are helping or working for. However, it can be a slippery slope at the same time. You can be consistently reliable and then have to back out of one thing, but then it may more than likely be easily forgiven. What happens in some cases like this is that you may think you can miss a couple more things and then, before you know it, it builds and builds to the point where that person never asks you to help again because you have proven to be unreliable and you cannot understand why. Even when we start new jobs we can give 110% at first to prove our worth, but eventually we will settle into a “groove” after we have proven ourselves, and possibly even told to scale back a bit; but, we should not let complacency set in because complacency can lead to becoming unreliable because you think that you are secure in your job just by coming to work every day. However, if you get nothing accomplished, chances are that your employer will start looking at you in a different way and, if the slope continues, you’ll find yourself looking for another job, confused as to what you did wrong. We all have different personalities and work styles, but if you can maintain the skills and reputation of being a reliable person, there is a strong chance that you will always be called upon to lend a helping hand. After all, it is a good feeling to know that you are needed, so make sure that you give the people you know a reason to ask for your help.

A Dream Changed His Life BZ Lewis grew up in Big Spring. When he was six years old he took piano lessons, not knowing that music was going to be a lifetime pursuit.

When he was fourteen he took up guitar. “My brother was learning guitar and he showed me a chord. Since day one I was just completely absorbed, absolutely hooked. I think I’ve played guitar just about every day except when I was on vacation or away from a guitar.”

He played in a few bands all over Texas and Louisiana. “My first one was a metal band we called Stainless Steel.

Later I started paying classical guitar, a truly solo endeavor. You have to figure out how to move your fingers in a way to make a musical passage work. It’s just you and your instrument and hours and hours of practice.”

As he approached adulthood he was concerned he couldn’t make a living with music. So he enrolled in the University of Texas to study engineering. That didn’t last very long. “I felt really

bad about abandoning music.

I felt like guitar was something I had to do.”

BZ has long hair, which played a part in a dream he had. “In this dream I was walking around this office building and there was this guy with long gray hair carrying a stack of papers and he bumped into me. Papers went everywhere. As I was helping him gather them up, I noticed they were all blank musical manuscript pages except for the first few layers, which had music written on them. I looked into the guy’s face and it was my face. I interpreted that dream as telling me I’ve got a lot of music to write.”

In the dream, a classical guitar piece, Recuerdos de la Alhambra by Francisco Tarrega was playing over the loud speaker. Two weeks after the dream, the univer-

sity began a classical guitar course, limited to just twelve people.

When BZ showed up to talk to the teacher, he was told the class was full.

BZ had his guitar with him, got it out and played Recuerdos de la Alhambra for the teacher. BZ was admitted to the class.

BZ has made his living with music since graduating with a degree in music from UT. Recently he returned to the University to lecture and encourage music majors.

He has composed music for movies, television shows, commercials and international sporting events. He has a recording studio (Studio 132) and records musicians in

the bay area of California, where he now lives.

His music has been on virtually every television network and he has earned numerous awards including six Emmys for music he composed for television. Every speaker in his studio has an Emmy statuette on it. He is a judge for the Grammys.

For the past few years he has composed music for the World Poker Tour.

BZ (Brian Zack) is my son. He is not only a great musician, he is a textbook husband to his wife Margaret and father to his two children, Max and Aiden. He has a vast array of friends and is a Lego enthusiast and Rubik’s cube expert. He is handy with tools and is a dedicated off road bicycle rider. “This music business is giving me a nice ride. I’m lucky but sometimes you have to make your own luck.”

The goal is for it to be an interactive museum with the involvement of volunteers. Nearly a 1000 kids in the area have been to the museum in the past

year, and many family nights have been successful with even more involvement. New ideas for making it even more attractive are being incorporated. Stamford is grateful for all of the hard work that has been contributed to make it what it is today.

She and other members of her company had the opportunity to meet and visit with many other people in related professions of the book publishing business. They included authors, illustrators, and publishers from around the country as

well as overseas. While on the trip they also had the opportunity to visit many sights of interest in the city.
