NEW PICTURE BOOKS OUR BESTSELLERS
4 12
Dear Colleagues, One of our current most successful books is The Bridge, a story about friendship and solidarity. It sold out soon after hitting the stands in Brazil and is now in its third print run. This year, a Chinese edition is in the works. Therefore, we are very happy to announce two new titles by Eliandro Rocha, the author of The Bridge, and one by Paulo Thumé, the illustrator. The School of the Enchanted Princes is an unorthodox, against the grain fairy tale in which the royal youngsters have different, unconventional career choices. The Secret Friend ignites young readers’ imaginations and gives them the comfort of never feeling alone by creating their own secret friend. And, last but not least, Amaro is a beautifully illustrated, poetically written declaration of love to books and to the sea. We hope that we have piqued your curiosity and cordially invite you to discover our books—the new ones and the classics! For more details, please visit our booth in Bologna: Hall 26, B51, or our website: www.callis.com.br Sincerely yours, Miriam Gabbai Publisher

Written by Eliandro Rocha Illustrated by Thiago Lopes 36 pages 21x25 cm 4x4 colors World rights available
New career choices for blue-blooded teenagers Prince Valentino was not amused by his predetermined destiny: When he was ten years old, his father sent him to the school of the enchanted princes. But the boy did not want to be just another anonymous prince killing dragons and saving princesses. His school career ended shortly after it had begun, when he refused to kill a baby dragon as proof of his bravery. To his father’s dismay, instead, Valentino turned to dressmaking, a profession he learned from an old lady. He soon became famous and visitors from all over the country were coming to see him for his dresses. One of them was a young princess who was equally unhappy with her own classic predetermined role as a future queen. When Valentino heard that, rather than being a future queen, she wanted to be an architect and design castles, he immediately decided to marry her, and they were very happy together—maybe not ever after, but at least for quite a while . . . Eliandro Rocha was born in Rio Grande do Sul in 1976. He studied marketing and is an author and storyteller. Thiago Lopes was born in São Paulo. He has a degree in Graphic Design and has always liked to communicate using his delicate, funny illustrations.

Written by Antônio Schimeneck Illustrated by Paulo Thumé 40 pages 21x25 cm 4x4 colors World rights available
There are two things Amaro loves to dive in: books and the sea. Ever since he was a baby, Amaro’s aunt Ana read stories to him and gave him books. The stories were like immeasurable treasures to him, a boy with many brothers and sisters within a relatively poor family. With the books, he traveled around the world in pirate ships, visited the pyramids in Egypt and princesses in their castles. So, when Ana moved to another city, despite all the books she kept sending him, Amaro was sad . . . until the day she took him to her new home and showed him another amazing thing in life: the sea! Paulo Thumé’s watercolor illustrations emphasize the poetic tone of this beautiful story. Antônio Schimeneck lives in Rio Grande do Sul, in the south of Brazil. He studied literature and is specialized in reading promotion for children. Paulo Thumé was born in Porto Alegre in 1961 and became an illustrator in spite of his color blindness.

This picture book puts forth an intriguing theme: how does each thing begin? And how does it end? Written in verse with stunning illustrations, the book invites children to think about the world through poetry in an easy, but philosophical way. It presents issues that may seem simple, but can lead to interesting contemplations. “Certain things do not always begin by being what they are: the chick begins as an egg; the frog as a tadpole; and the butterfly as a caterpillar.” World rights available except for Italian, Japanese, Korean, Chinese, Swedish, and Turkish Written by Silvana Tavano Illustrated by Elma
