Rationale Creative report is a newspaper which features short and snappy advice for creative students who have questions to about the transition from university life to the industry. The creative who has been interviewed is Ryan Tallent, a young creative from Birmingham who studied in Leeds, and is now working as part of GRIN studio. The publication retains a colloquial style so the audience will find it relevant and non-threatening, and therefore relatable to help tackle their issues. Strict grids conflict bright colours in order to represent the way in which one can feel lost in industry but the structure of the industry itself will help with your creative growth. The aim of the report is to allow a student to professional transition to be as smooth as possible.

Research The research stages of this project saw an investigation mainly into the visual identity of the media that the piece will be completed in. Due to the target audience, the outcome must need to be easily reproducible, thus newsprint provides a simplistic and cheap method of mass reproduction. The design style itself focus’ around typography throughout the outcome, this is to keep the focus on the content, rather than the designer’s work who is being interviewed. Therefore, investigations focused on alternative type layout within newsprinted products. The second stage of the research process was to contact and receive a reply from a practicing professional who had the insight needed to fill the outcome. E-mails and various social media contacts were made to make this possible. The selected designer, Ryan Tallent, successfully answered the questions in a way that was colloquial and casual, which was suited for the target audience.

Design The design method was selected to both reflect the use of the creative report as a newspaper is there to pass on information from one to another, it informs the readers on the issues and passage from tuition to industry, from offering information from someone who is already in the industry. The type of print also is appropriate for what would be the relevant distribution methods. Yellow was selected as the main colour running through the project as it symbolises mental growth and energy, which is needed when moving from university life to industry. The design was highly inspired by the concept, each of the pages only includes the text and the colour. All of the information is constricted the refines of the grid that were created, this is to separate questions and answers to one single sector where the question and answer when it is printed. Meaning when unfolded the layout may seem confusing but the medium itself creates clarification. This is similar to the way in which everyone who I have spoken to have said they were unsure and didn’t really know their path when entering the industry, but the industry structure itself creates clarity for their path. Colour was used rather than images, to keep the focus on the information opposed to the work of the designer who is being interviewed. This is then balanced out by a short portfolio of the particular designers work at the back of the publication. This would change with each edition.

Final Outcome The final outcome is appropriate to the brief and the audience. The method of printing would be cheap in production. The document itself is not stapled, similar to an actual tabloid paper, this method also allows for features from artists, and the possibility of the publication becoming a regular almost questions column for designers. Due to the size of the document the printing was needed to be done externally, there was some issues with colour recognition in the handover of the document but that is something that could be worked over in future editions. The ink also cracked on the folds of the page, which reaffirms my decision to not use large images on the inside as it did not affect the yellow large blocks. Again, this is something that could be experimented with in further editions. Overall the outcome is professional and to the standard that is expected.

Evaluation Overall I believe that my creative report has helped me develop in a multitude of ways through contacting the designers themselves, my confidence has been boosted to further contact more artists and creatives, and make connections with new people to possibly collaborate with at a later date. This has led me to keep in contact with one of the people I contacted to create the report and arrange some work experience over the summer in a studio in Birmingham. The report has also made me consider the way I ask questions, each question which I asked was something I was concerned about in my design and considering talking in my third year. Not only has the answers of the questions helped me in terms on understanding these issues but also in gaining the assurance that I can contact industry professionals and talk to them about progressive issues. Overall if I were to do this part of the module again I would make sure to gain some interview experience face to face with the creatives themselves and ensure to gain a more of a personal level of interaction.
