Content guide
performing arts education
Content Assessments and Age Recommendations We offer this information to help patrons decide which shows are appropriate for themselves and those they bring to the theatre. The assessments are subjective, so we encourage patrons to do their own research. Note that performances can run up to 3 hours including intermission, which may not be ideal for a younger child with a limited attention span. As a courtesy to all patrons, children under 4 (including babes in arms) are not permitted in the theatre. If you have questions or would like to discuss specific content aspects of any of these shows, please call our Box Office at (916) 557-1999.
Jersey Boys is recommended for ages 16 and over.
Jersey Boys contains profane language, smoke, gun shots, strobe lights, drug references, and sexual situations. Audience members may find the language objectionable, but it is not intended to offend. It is meant to tell the true story of four guys from the streets of Jersey and their rise to fame, giving an authentic experience of The Four Seasons as they would’ve sounded, both on the streets and on their records.
Dirty Dancing is recommended for ages 13 and over.
Based on the 1987 beloved classic film, audiences may be familiar with the plot of Dirty Dancing and the many recognizable hit songs from the movie that are also in the musical. Privileged Daddy’s girl “Baby” goes on a family summer vacation, where she learns about life, love, and finds her passion for dance. The plot contains suggestive choreography, mild profanity, sexual references and a serious adult situation.
Joseph ... Dreamcoat is recommended for ages 4 and over.
Written by the musical powerhouse team of Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice, Joseph’s family-friendly storyline, universal themes and catchy songs have made it a favorite among musical lovers young, old and young-at-heart. Joseph is an imaginative and fun interpretation of the classic Bible story of Joseph and his coat of many colors, but the plot is easy to follow and completely enjoyable for those who aren’t familiar with the Old Testament story.
rain is recommended for ages 4 and over.
RAIN performs songs from The Beatles live on stage, transporting audiences back to the 60s with an authentic sound, look and feel. Although the show follows The Beatles’ career chronologically, there is no plot, so younger children should be able to easily enjoy the show even if they are not familiar with the band or the songs. It is unlikely that audience members will be offended by the show’s content or language.
Once is recommended for ages 13 and over.
Music lovers will rejoice at this truly original musical where the actors play their own instruments on stage. Based on the 2007 film, Once tells an enchanting story about music, love, relationships and music’s power to connect us all. The show will likely have wide appeal, and the age recommendation is based primarily on the fact that it contains profane language.
Cinderella is recommended for ages 4 and over.
12
Theatergoers of all ages will thoroughly enjoy Rodgers + Hammerstein’s musical Cinderella with its beloved songs and surprisingly contemporary take on the classic fairytale. The story should be familiar to most audiences, but contains several new plot twists, plenty of laughs for all ages, and jaw-dropping magical transformations on stage. This is a full-length musical and may not be suitable for younger children with short attention spans.
