This will be the 65th season for Music Circus, a revered tradition that’s become part of the very fabric of Sacramento and a vital part of the summer for tens of thousands of Northern Californians. Our patrons are unanimous in their belief that there really is no better way to experience musical theatre. Since Music Circus moved from a tent into the state-of-the-art Wells Fargo Pavilion in 2003, we’ve been able to continually enhance the quality of our productions. And the theatre-in-the-round configuration creates an intimate experience like no other. It’s because of the outstanding reputation Music Circus has throughout the theatre world that some of the top veteran Broadway actors and creative professionals in the industry come to Sacramento each summer to create on-stage magic.

The 2015 season features all Tony Award®—winning musicals—in fact, the first three shows alone won a total of 17 Tony Awards. We’ll present four shows that have never been at the Wells Fargo Pavilion: The magical journey Peter Pan, the Mississippi adventure Big River, the musical comedy Bye Bye Birdie and the generation-defining Hair. Plus two multiple Tonywinning classics: West Side Story and My Fair Lady, both all-time favorites of Music Circus audiences. You can experience all new productions of these great shows, created right here in Sacramento for one week only, in the intimate Wells Fargo Pavilion. The best way to enjoy Music Circus is to become a season ticket-holder. Not only do you get the best price, saving up to $110 with a pair of season tickets, but you get the peace of mind in knowing you have seats for shows that will likely sell out. And this summer, you have the choice of getting a six-show season that includes the Vietnam era rock musical Hair or a fiveshow season without Hair.

show content guide We offer an assessment of each show’s content to help patrons decide which shows are appropriate for themselves and those they bring to the theatre. As age recommendations are highly subjective, this season’s Content Guide will focus on the components of each offering and detail, as much as possible, any elements we believe our patrons may find objectionable. please note: Children under 4 (including babes in arms) will not be admitted to the theatre.
With themes that include the importance of self-worth, the need to respect others and the value of education, it will likely appeal to a wide range of patrons, although younger children may not grasp some of the concepts or plot elements. Includes no violence or sexual situations. It does include references to excessive alcohol consumption and antiquated views on women’s rights and roles, and some of the plot elements focus on relationships.
Based on the Mark Twain masterpiece Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, it’s important to note the historical context for the plot. Racism is depicted overtly, including repeated uses of derogatory racial terms from the era, although the message is clearly anti-racist and anti-slavery. It contains other dark elements, including violence and death, as well as some strong language. The plot may be too complex for younger children to comprehend.
A musical comedy with nothing that most would likely find objectionable. It includes mild sexual innuendos, primarily related to high school crushes, and some socially antiquated ideals. There are comedic references to drugs and alcohol, but in the context of naïve kids, who have no understanding of the subject, making jokes. While the content is likely appropriate for most children, the younger ones might not grasp some of the humor or plot.
A family favorite for decades, most patrons are familiar with the plot. It does include some violence: Captain Hook and the pirates talk about killing the Lost Boys; references to the crocodile biting off Captain Hook’s hand; Captain Hook tries to poison the Lost Boys; sword fights and non-graphic stabbings. The overall message is positive and fun.
Inspired by Romeo and Juliet, this tragic love story set among New York City street gangs in the 1950s includes adult themes such as violence, death, sexual content and bigotry, strong language, racial slurs and sexual innuendos. Street fighting and knifing is depicted and a gang of boys physically assaults a young woman. The overall message is a positive one of overcoming bigotry and violence. The plot may be too complex for some children to comprehend.
NOT APPROPRIATE FOR CHILDREN. It takes place in a turbulent era in America’s history. It includes draft-age youth rebelling against society and, specifically, the Vietnam War; simulated drug use; brief nudity; profanity; questioning of religion; blatant sexual positioning; refusal of authority; racial stereotypes and slurs of the era; exploration of sexual orientation and identity.
