Youth Service Award
CSA
Our newest award, the Youth Service Award (YSA), recognizes those individuals in our clubs, schools, and communities, who dedicate their time fulfilling the Kiwanis mission making our children safer, empowering their spirit, engaging their potential, and preparing them for beyond. In addition to recognizing club members with the YSA, other recipients might include teachers, coaches or employees of organizations dedicated to children, such as the Boys & Girls Club.
Community Service Award
The Community Service Award (CSA) is presented to a community member in appreciation “of service rendered to the community. Many of our past CSA recipients include local business owners and leaders who partnered with their local club on a fundraiser or service project. Consider presenting the CSA during the Governor's official visit, which offers a unique membership opportunity for your club.
Distinguished Service Award
For more than 25 years, Kiwanis clubs have awarded the Distinguished Service Award (DSA) to recognize, at the District level, Kiwanians who go above and beyond in their service and dedication to their club and community.

Rocci Barsotti
District Governor, 2018-19
As the 2018-2019 Kiwanis year comes to a close, First Lady Patti and I would like to say THANK YOU to each and every one in the California-NevadaHawaii (CNH) Kiwanis family. Our year has been one full of education, fun, accomplishments, and recognition. Many special thanks to our 40 Lt. Governors, 18 Trustees, Cabinet, Committee Chairs and Committee Members, our District Foundation and District Staff for a job well done. It can be an emotional rollercoaster ride, as August provided us with a very successful District Convention (DCON) in Las Vegas full of education, and comradery, and September with the tragic death of our International President Poly Lat. We enjoyed our six days with Poly and his wife Susan, at the Rose Float event in Pasadena, and in Orlando, Florida at the International Convention (ICON). He moved us from Good to Great and will be missed. KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 4 -- 2018 - 2019

We enjoyed all of our official visits, and special events, as you never cease to amaze me the amount of effort put into each visit, and your hospitality is incredible. I suggest every Kiwanis member attend at least one of the Service Leadership Program (SLP) conventions, Circle K, Key Club, KIWINS, or Aktion Club during their Kiwanis lifetime. They are all awesome as they display caring, diversity and inclusiveness to everyone. Something we as Kiwanians need to improve upon as we invite prospects into our great organization. Don't Forget SWAGAWANIS!! Thank you for accepting my Heart of a Hero theme for this year in all of your activities, and for those who will continue to annually recognize individuals in their clubs and communities with Heart of a Hero awards. Also, thanks for supporting First Lady Patti's Project, by donating to the Kiwanis International Children's Fund helping to close the Eliminate Gap, and to the District Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation supporting the Pediatric Trauma Program. We focused on the Power of ING, as strengthening, growing, educating, building, opening, etc. to increase our membership. I appreciated all of the efforts to assist the 30 new clubs opened last year to make sure that they are successful. We learned that the recipe for membership is all about recruiting sustainable members, and not having contests for quantity. We have learned that members on "paper only" do not increase our hands for providing service as we serve the Children of the World! We have added 1,848 new members this year and thank you to each new member sponsor. Our District still needs to work on closing the back door, and continue to provide value and purpose to our new members. Keep in mind that each new member will touch the lives on average of 200 children. Congratulations to Lt. Governors Beth Roberts Division 44 and Norm Cone Division 24 for opening the most recent new clubs, and thanks to everyone who helped to support those efforts. Also special kudos to Lt. Governor Melissa Guire, Division 18, who leads all divisions with currently a plus 78 new members for the year. In closing, again thanks for all your dedication to service, and the positive impact making a difference in your community, division, district and in the world. Please remember, as I stated in Las Vegas, no matter what our challenges are in life, there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. All of you Kiwanians have been my light this year. Teamwork makes the dream work. You all have the Heart of a Hero, and I am extremely confident in my friend 2019-2020 Governor Timothy Cunning as I pass the torch to him as he leads us into the new Kiwanis year. Sincerely, as it has been an honor, KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 4 -- 2018 - 2019

Governor Cunning’s Goals 2019-2020
“IGNITE YOUR PASSION”

What aspect of Kiwanis is your love/passion and why? (Leadership, SLP, Governing, Membership, etc.) My biggest passion would be our SLP, I learn so much from them. What is your favorite color, food, drink, song, dance — and why? Orange, it's the happiest color; Ginger, it has great health benefits; Song - so many but let's say “The Climb” by Miley Cyrus and “You Get What You Give” by the New Radicals (I love music - so many songs inspire me); Dance I don't dance. Was there some specific influence to your colors or songs? No, not particularly As Governor, what are your goals?

I have three major goals -- Leadership, Membership and SLP - Service Leadership Programs

LEADERSHIP: • Lead by example, share servant leadership principles, foster an environment of joy • There are no “problems”; restate as “issues,” “challenges” and “opportunities” • Be genuine in your nature and in your intent • Never stop aspiring to be inspired. MEMBERSHIP: • Improve the club meeting experience • Promote ideas for positive change • Make meetings the best show in town • Open and mentor 21 new clubs SLP (SERVICE LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS): • Support and connect with all levels of SLP • Provide sponsorships of SLP to attend Key Leader • Attend a Key leader camp yourself Celebrating 100 Years • 909.989.1500 • www.cnhkiwanis.org
statement. I would like members to find their passion in Kiwanis (service, SLP, fun), whatever it is, get involved, let your passion grow, and most importantly share it. That, too, is what I love about our "Ignite Your Passion" theme and the use of the torch, the symbolism of passing the torch.
Any specific action to reach your goals?
Yes, it started with Lt. Governor and Club Leadership Education (CLE) training, and will continue with Trustee training. It is to empower and inspire our leadership at all levels, especially club presidents, they are the most important people for our future success. Club meetings need to be fun and meaningful experience that members simply do not want to miss.
What legacy would you like to leave for your year? My hope is to have motivated and inspired members in such a way that our District is the beneficiary of empowered and fun leadership for years to come.
Why is “Ginger” your nickname?
What program has the First Lady chosen for the year?
Ginger is for the red hair. We wanted to have fun with the marketing of my campaign, and Ginger was the way we chose to do it.
The First Lady's focus is a new award. It's called the Youth Service Award (YSA). Its purpose is to recognize those individuals in our clubs, schools and communities who dedicate their time to fulfill the Kiwanis mission, making our children safer, empowering their spirit, engaging their potential, and preparing them for beyond; all while supporting the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation.
And is that the reason for the color “orange”? Yes, absolutely
Your message “Ignite Your Passion” is powerful — what would you recommend to clubs/members to make it happen? Thank you. Yes it is. And what I love about it is, it is an action

A Word from Marie Cunning, 2019-2020 First Lady
Every child deserves the opportunity to grow up in a warm, safe, caring, loving, empowering, environment. An environment that fosters their dreams, unleashes their creativity, builds on their potential, and prepares them to be the absolute best they can be. They deserve this, yet it is not always the case. Kiwanis, through its global focus, “Serving the Children of the World,” understands the needs of the children in our communities and works tirelessly, in so many ways, to meet these needs, from providing for basic health and safety, to education, to leadership opportunities, to doing service themselves, to making not only their futures brighter, but ours as well. The First Lady’s Focus is the Youth Service Award (YSA), its purpose is twofold: Recognize those individuals in our clubs, schools, and communities, who dedicate their time fulfilling the Kiwanis mission, making our children safer, empowering their spirit, engaging their potential, and preparing them for beyond; and Raise funds for the Kiwanis Cal-NevHa Foundation to contribute to their efforts in advancing the Kiwanis mission, through grants, scholarships, and training of our Service Leadership Programs members.
Recognize a member or community leader for their role in working with the youth in your community with the new Youth Service award.
The Youth Service Award (YSA) is available for a donation of $200 to the Foundation. Order forms are available at cnhfoundation.org. Thank you now and always for the work you do with and for the children. Sincerely,
Marie Cunning

Your Club is the KEY Toward Making an IMPACT AROUND THE WORLD!!! by Michael Fields CNH District Partnership Coordinator 310-245-8329
Key Club International has teamed up with SQUADS ABROAD to create the largest High School movement improving health and education outcomes in the developing world!! SQUADS ABROAD provides affordable opportunities for Key Club members to volunteer
abroad and make a meaningful impact in under resourced schools around the world. Key Club members will develop cross-Cultural competence and character while gaining hands-on international experience implementing projects that improve the health and educational outcomes for in-need communities.
Guided by local staff in each country, each trip includes fun and engaging cultural activities that provide a deeper cultural context and new perspectives. The home-based model provides safe and private accommodations for Key Clubbers to enjoy healthy authentic meals and relaxation after a day of service, and a chance to reflect about their amazing experience. What is a squad and what is SQUADS ABROAD? The dictionary defines a squad as “a small group of people, having a particular task. SQUADS ABROAD are comprised of student groups and the adults
that lead them who embark in the largest task of all: making meaningful change on a global scale. Collectively, SQUADS ABROAD empowers one of the largest volunteer-led global health and education programs in the world. Each squad leader chooses a focus (Education, Health or STEM), when and where they would like to serve, and how many volunteers will participate. The squad then travels abroad to implement the program alongside the local team. SQUADS ABROAD has 22+ years of experience mobilizing volunteers to improve the health and educational outcomes, while providing a safe and authentic cultural experience. The home-based model, strong community partnerships, and expert in-country staff help maintain a sustainable service and enriching the volunteering experience.
Where in the World Are Squads Currently Working? SQUADS ABROAD have teams (squads) working in the following countries:
Guanacaste Province, Costa Rica Cape Coast, Ghana Greece, Refugee Program El Paraiso, Honduras Maya Highlands, Guatemala Azrou, Morocco Coclsoe Province, Panama
As the need changes - the countries that SQUADS ABROAD operates in may change. Volunteer opportunities for SQUADS ABROAD last from 1 week to 4 weeks. Cost to join a squad for next summer varies depending on country of service and length of service. Now that you know a little about our Key Club International partner, maybe your club can allocate some funds to a SQUADS ABROAD scholarship for a deserving Key Club member? For more information on SQUADS ABROAD, you can go directly to their website or the Kiwanis website/ partners/SQUADS ABROAD.
As our 100th Anniversary comes to an end, take a moment to look back at what your club has accomplished and the impact you have made in your community. Our youth have been blessed with you as a part of their life, helping them grow and understand what it takes to care for others. Now onto the next 100 years.

The Kiwanis Club of Alameda participated in three community summer activities: Relay for Life, the Park Street Art and Wine Faire and Equipped for Success. The Park Street Art and Wine Faire was an all city event with food, beverage and crafts booths. The business district was transformed into a huge pedestrian zone, such that children’s games could be held safely. Getting ready for school, the Alameda Education Foundation organized a school supplies drive, where Kiwanians stuffed backpacks with items for all grade levels. The Kiwanis Club of Alameda and other Division 2 Kiwanians organized and hosted a Special Needs Day. Forty youth registered for the event where the Bay Area Outreach Program for adaptive sports shared their love of inclusiveness and bikes. Various adaptive cycles were available. Other adapted sports and games included basketball, bowling, bean bag toss and frisbee. KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 4 -- 2018 - 2019

“The Objects of Kiwanis” To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life. To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards. To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship. To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities. To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill.

Members of the Kiwanis Club of Redondo Beach attended the Kiwanis Club of Hermosa Beach’s Trivia Night. In August, the Redondo Beach club sponsored the Library Craft Program at the North Branch Redondo Beach Library twice and participated in story time during July. Members also volunteered at the Walk with Sally - White Light/White Night Fundraiser.
The six permanent Objects of Kiwanis International were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Kiwanis International Convention in Denver, Colorado. Through the decades, they have remained unchanged.
The Kiwanis Club of Santa Monica spent a Saturday celebrating birthdays with Cause for Celebration. There was a bounce house, face painting, cupcakes and more.
Fun Fact . . . During the war, travel was limited, limiting those that could attend the 1944 District Convention. To accommodate the restriction, two conferences were held in Los Angeles and Oakland, thus reducing the distances delegates had to travel. Kiwanis Children’s Fund Annual Club Gift Campaign The 2019-2020 Lieutenant Governors and Trustees are encouraging clubs to donate $10 per member to the Annual Club Gift Campaign for the Children’s Fund by putting it in their budget. The benefits are recognition from the Children’s Fund President, the 15% district grant eligibility, and the impact made on the Children’s Fund five major causes: service leadership programs, club and district service projects, disaster relief, the Eliminate Project and Iodine Deficiency Disorders.
15% district grant of $10,723 for 2018-2019 In 2018-2019 a Key Leader program was supported with $4,000 and a service project was completed at the 99th Annual District Convention. Working with The Outreach Program, a nonprofit organization ending hunger and enriching lives, we packaged more than 20,000 meals together for food banks in Las Vegas. We had Circle K members from Las Vegas and Kiwanis members from many divisions with more than 75 volunteers participating. It was a great opportunity for the Kiwanis family at the district convention to do meaningful service at conventions, as requested on past surveys. Do you Love, Share and Live Kiwanis? #KIDSNEEDKIWANIS Do you have a chair/ambassador in your division representing the Kiwanis Children’s Fund? MEET EDWARD TRAN In his own words, our 2019 Loretta BarksdaleMcElwain scholarship recipient, Edward Tran, shares what it meant to receive such a prestigious scholarship . . . Dear Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation, Thank you so much for awarding me the Loretta Barksdale-McElwain scholarship of $15,850. I greatly appreciate your generous financial support and the opportunity to pursue both my educational and extracurricular dreams. When I waited backstage that evening at DCON, I honestly was not expecting to receive the Loretta Barksdale-McElwain scholarship. In fact, I was given the impression that I would be receiving the Kenneth Forror scholarship from the email I received, which was already a huge honor. However, when they announced me as the recipient of the Loretta Barksdale-McElwain scholarship, my mind was completely blank and I was speechless. Although I was initially in disbelief, it eventually settled in and I was incredibly proud that all my hard work had paid off. This scholarship is definitely a huge milestone in my life and I can’t express how grateful I am for Kiwanis. Your investment in my higher education humbles me and motivates me to make the most of my opportunities. Receiving this scholarship has greatly reduced the financial burden on my family, giving me peace of mind, and allowing me to focus on my education without the stress of having a job to pay for college. With less student loans and debts, this scholarship will open up many opportunities for me to explore my various interests, allowing me to create a path for myself and adjust to college life. This will enable me to maximize my college experience, allowing me to take advantage of opportunities that I would otherwise give up due to financial barriers. Furthermore, your generosity will not only serve as an inspiration as I continue my studies, but also ensure my success in the future. Because of this scholarship, I am proud to say that I will be attending my dream school, Stanford University, in the fall.
At Stanford, I hope to use my knowledge to aid the underprivileged in developing countries. More specifically, I hope to serve as counselor for children battling against obesity, youth violence, and injuries while providing them with opportunities to obtain education. Beyond alleviating poverty in developing countries, I hope to eliminate the mental health stigma by providing accessible resources and support to communities lacking thereof. One day I strive to be able to give back to other students as the Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation has to many others and me. Again, Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation, thank you for everything! Serving in Spirit, Edward Tran
