Soaring with Hope! The Kiwanis Float in this year’s parade was quite simply the best in this year’s lineup of floats. It was the best visual, whimsical, meaningful depiction of what we do as Kiwanians, and the float title brilliantly encapsulated this year’s parade theme into the descriptive optics of the float. THE BEST!!! This float was a fan favorite and most definitely would have been awarded a “People’s Choice” award.
Signup now to share in the experience of energetic and informative training opportunities, and never ever underestimate the value of fun, fellowship, bonding, and growth which is an innate benefit of all conferences and conventions. Did I mention attendance at Mid-Year’s is part of the Distinguished criteria as reflected on the next page?
I can’t thank all of the volunteers enough for their dedication and hard work, from the students, to the chaperones, to the clubs and divisions that fed not only our team of workers, but fed other groups as well. It’s important to note that our roughly 7,000 volunteers work on all of the floats in the decorating facility. All of them, not just the Kiwanis Float. The Rose Parade itself would not be the success it is without our volunteers. Let that sink in.
Happy New Year and thank you for your service!
Kiwanians do what needs to be done, we don’t do it for the recognition. We serve, we work, we lead, we empower, we donate, because there is a need.

What’s in a Name?
The Kiwanis Cal-Nev-Ha Foundation has changed its name. We are now the Cal-Nev-Ha Children’s Fund. Our new name better reflects the mission of the Foundation: To build a better future for our children. The major focus of the Foundation, and the Cal-Nev-Ha District, is our Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP). However, our Foundation is much more. An important element of the Foundation is the leadership development of our youth. Did you know the Foundation sponsors our Service Leadership Programs educational conferences, covering the expenses of KIWIN’S, Key Club and Circle K District Officers to attend training sessions throughout the
As well as addressing the needs of children, the Foundation addresses the needs of adults with disabilities through our Aktion Clubs. The Foundation provides grants for their annual educational conference, providing these adults with the tools to conduct their own projects benefiting children. In order to meet our mission of building a better future for children and to run these programs, we need your help. Our Service Leadership Programs continue to grow which means more District Leaders need training. As the costs of a high education increase, so to do the needs of our student leaders wishing to pursue their dream of a higher education. Magical Giraffe Spotlights the Kiwanis Rose Float Entry Hours and hours, days and days, volunteers come together at the Rose Float Decorating facility in Irwindale. Approximately 7,000 volunteer hours go into decorating the Kiwanis float, as well as others, in the facility. Our Service Leadership Program (SLP) members take shifts over many days to prep, cut and affix the live materials and flowers. Pictures are worth a thousand words. See our SLP working in various areas depending on the need of each float. Some SLP members cut the flowers while others may be serving lunch -whatever the need is at the time. Kiwanis International President, Daniel Vigneron and CaliforniaNevada-Hawaii District Governor, Timothy Cunning visited the facility to see the work being done and visit with our SLP members. They even rolled up their sleeves to serve chili to our volunteer students. The students were all smiles to have both of these distinguished gentlemen join them in serving. A Great Idea Takes Time! by Michael Fields CNH District Partnership Coordinator 310-245-8329
During the Spring and Summer of 2014, Governorelect Alan Guire was looking for a park to place a Kiwanis Playground in honor of the Kiwanis 100th Anniversary Celebration. Kiwanis International President John Button, M.D. had set a goal of a new Kiwanis Playground in every district he would make an official visit to during his term. After reviewing several parks to build the 100th Anniversary playground in the CNH District, Woodcrest Park in Fullerton, California was chosen. Woodcrest was a small park next to a low-income housing project, whose playground equipment was in disrepair. KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 1 -- 2019 - 2020

With the approval of the CNH District Board of Trustees, funding from the Kiwanis International Foundation (Children’s Fund) and the CNH District Foundation, we started planning for the playground. The biggest issue was how to raise the additional $30,000 needed to purchase the approved Kiwanis 100th Anniversary playground. Since, the City of Fullerton would not allow our members to assemble and place the playground equipment (community built), funding sources like KaBooom were not available. But, thanks to our members, Landscape Structures (playground equipment builder who waived the shipping fee) and Up with People, we were able to reach our goal. In March of 2015, during the International President Button official visit to the CNH District, a groundbreaking ceremony was held for the start of the revitalization of the Woodcrest Park including the installation of the Kiwanis Playground. It was our understanding at the time, work on the park and playground would start immediately and be completed by the end of 2015. Unbeknownst to the committee chairman, district staff or officers, the city felt that revitalizing city owned parks was such a good idea they needed to look at all the city parks. After evaluating and prioritizing the needs for all the parks, Woodcrest was no longer at the top of list. In fact, the KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 1 -- 2019 - 2020
Woodcrest Park revitalization and the installation of the Kiwanis playground was near the bottom. While great ideas take time, on December 11th, 2019 (4 years later) the new Woodcrest Park including the Kiwanis 100th Anniversary Playground was dedicated!!!
It was worth the wait! The park has doubled in size and over the years other organizations and companies donated additional equipment to the project. The park and playground are much more than originally envisioned. The children in the area now have a safe place to play thanks to Kiwanis! If you are ever in the area, stop by and see what we accomplished!!! 17

HALLOWEEN WITH KIWANIS! Halloween: one of the most magical times of year, but also one of the most deadly. To help spread Halloween safety awareness, in October 2019, the Kiwanis Club of Coastal Valley Cyber brought the Teal Pumpkin Project to their community with the help of a PTP grant from the Cal-Nev-Ha Children's Fund. The Teal Pumpkin Project increases awareness of the dangers of some candies and homemade goods that are popular during Halloween, but can be dangerous to children with allergies. Throughout the month of October, members of the Coastal Valley Cyber Club distributed more than 1,500 informational flyers and 300 non-food item packages to families at their local pumpkin patches. "Parents and children were very interested [in] what we were doing," shared event manager Marie Banuelos. "They stopped and listened to our project...the kids were really interested...[and] a few parents were very excited because their children had serious allergies."

The Kiwanis Club of Alameda participated in two holiday events for children and youth. In November, the club organized a Special Olympics Party for local athletes. The week before Christmas, club members assisted with the Alameda Firefighters Toy Drive. The collected toys were sorted at the local church hall which was transformed into a large toy store. The weekend before Christmas, families were invited to come. Volunteers spoke to the children to find out their wish list. Then Kiwanis and church volunteers went into the toy store and emerged with a bagful of custom selected toys for each family.

“The Objects of Kiwanis” To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life. To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards. To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship. To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities. To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill. The six permanent Objects of Kiwanis International were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Kiwanis International Convention in Denver, Colorado. Through the decades, they have remained unchanged. KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 1 -- 2019 - 2020

Several Division 19 clubs contributed to the event. During mid-December, Torrance Kiwanis members volunteered for the Torrance Police Officers Association Santa float by riding on it and helping pass out candy. The club along with its Key Clubs and KIWIN’S did its annual bell ringing for the Salvation Army. Members from the Kiwanis Club of Santa Monica met at the Police Activities League to assemble and distribute Thanksgiving food baskets within the community. Feeding those in-need ... at 5a.m. Volunteers making lunches before serving breakfast
The Kiwanis Club of Hidden Valley, Escondido supports the local North County Interfaith Community Services by serving breakfast at 5am one or two times per month for approximately 150-170 people each morning. This is a regular project for the Kiwanians and members of the Del Lago and San Pasqual High School Key Clubs. As they were serving recently one morning, the club members kept running out of trays and had to wait until some were washed. So the club took matters into their own hands and purchased another 120 trays for the daily use at this shelter. Now the center should be able to get through a serving without running out of trays.
(donated food not necessarily breakfast items) and given a sack lunch which the Kiwanians prepare before serving breakfast. Kiwanians are proud to be serving such an important part of this daily routine, see photo below showing off the new trays. These trays will allow the center to continue serving food as needed.
Those served by this center are men, women AND children; anyone who is hungry and needs a hand up. They are served a hot "breakfast" KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 1 -- 2019 - 2020

In late September, the Kiwanis Club of Healdsburg held its 3rd annual Safety Fair in partnership with several other organizations. More than 500 children, parents and other participants enjoyed demonstrations and learning about safety.
I just wanted to say “thank you!” My daughter was one of the recipients from the shopping spree at Sears and pancake breakfast. You have no idea what joy it brought her.

For its Kiwanis One Day project, the Kiwanis Club of Santa Barbara participated in the Isla Vista Meet Your Neighbor event. The purpose of the event is to meld the very diverse community of UC Santa Barbara students and immigrant families living there. The event is a fun day with a carnival and bounce house. There might be 2,600 miles between them, but Past President and current Treasurer Debbie Heaslip of the Kiwanis Club of Santa Susana, Simi Valley recently visited her sister Cheryl King (one of the club’s new members) in Canada. Cheryl awaited her arrival with more than 50 Trauma Dolls she had sewn together for return to California for stuffing and dressing. In addition, Cheryl will be making doll clothes as well. Now when the two sisters get together they will have to take an extra suitcase when they go back and forth. The 5th annual “Cowboys and Cabernet” fundraiser was a succes for the Kiwanis Club of Simi Valley. In November, a few club KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 1 -- 2019 - 2020

Funds raised from the tree sales went to help individuals and families while they battle cancer at Adventist Hospital. Finding time for some socializing, the Kiwanis Club of Ventura held an End of Summer Social/Backyard BBQ at a member’s home. Then getting down to business, the club sposored the Ventura Community College Women’s Basketball Tournament. Ignite Your Passion • 909.989.1500 • www.cnhkiwanis.org

The California Highway Patrol stopped traffic on Pacific Coast Highway so the caravan could cross to the beach, where the Kiwanis Club was ready with a delicious barbecue lunch. On the day before Thanksgiving, the Kiwanis Club of Thousand Oaks paid its annual visit to the Thousand Oaks Healthcare residents. Club members brought McDonald’s breakfast and raffle prizes for everyone.

Boy Scout Troop 633 is chartered by the Kiwanis Club of Rancho Murieta. In the Boy Scouts, a court of honor is a formal troop ceremony (usually held quarterly) where Scouts and their families come together to receive rank advancement, merit badges and other awards. In September, the Court of Honor was held where Scouts earned special awards from summer camp and one of the Scouts was elevated to Eagle Scout. At a recent pack meeting, Cub Scout Pack 633 had two contests, each to build the highest structure using toothpicks. One contest used miniature marshmallows as the corner pieces and the other contest used gummy candies. The Cub Scouts learned a lesson as to which structure was higher and why.

by Michael Fields CNH District Partnership Coordinator 310-245-8329 “To enable all young people, especially those who need us the most, to reach their full potential as productive, caring, responsible citizens.” Doesn’t this sound very similar to the mission statement of Kiwanis? In fact, it is the mission statement of Boys & Girls Clubs of America, one of the early partners of Kiwanis clubs around the nation and a preferred charity. When it comes to serving children, Kiwanis International and Boys & Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) both have long and successful histories. The two organizations have worked collaboratively for many years to promote and support the local Kiwanis and Boys & Girls Clubs partnerships at the grassroots level. The leaders of Kiwanis and BGCA, as well as local affiliates of the two organizations, continue to work closely to achieve an even greater positive impact in the lives of children and in communities nationwide. One of the best ways to strengthen the Kiwanis/Boys & Girls Club partnership is to invite staff members of the Boys & Girls Club to join your club. What better way to build a strong bond between your local Kiwanis Club and Boys & Girls Club than to have a member of their leadership as a member of your Kiwanis club. A critical need that has been identified by the two organizations is the shortage of adult mentors for children in urgent need of a caring adult role model in their lives. To that end, the two KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 1 -- 2019 - 2020

At the local level, the National Mentor Recruitment Partnership model is simple. Nearly 1,300 local Boys & Girls Clubs have received National Mentoring Program grants from BGCA and the U.S. Office of Justice Programs. Total unrestricted club giving must increase by 10 percent within the district (or division for lieutenant governors). This is based on an average of the previous three administrative years. Benefits? Recognition from the Children’s Fund President, 15% district grant eligibility, impact on the five major causes, club and district service projects, disaster relief, the Eliminate Project, Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD0, and, one we can all get our teeth around is service leadership programs.

Hidden Valley, Escondido stepped up. The 50,000 children who visit the park each year now have a place to play that’s enjoyable and safe. More than 40 clubs and districts led disaster relief projects in 2018-2019. Clubs have aided communities affected by tornadoes, flooding, typhoons and more. Further progress in the Eliminate Campaign, Chad became the 26th country to eliminate MNT (Maternal Neonatal Tetanus) since the beginning of The Eliminate Project, and the number of babies dying from tetanus each year has been cut nearly in half since the start of The Eliminate Project.

This year we are eligible for a 15% district grant of $10,648! What do we do with the grant? I’ll be working with the Governor and the district leadership to decide. Do you have an idea?
