Governor Timothy Cunning CNH District Governor 2019-2020

Hello CNH -

what I've seen, online meetings I've been on, attendance is higher. Let's face it, we have a captive audience. And seeing everyone, even if it's only onscreen, brings a sigh of relief.

There is no doubt that the current COVID-19 Pandemic is changing and challenging our daily lives, but it also has presented us with opportunities. We are being forced to be creative to accomplish our tasks and goals.

Fourth, "Be genuine in your nature and in your intent" and "Never stop aspiring to be inspired", are not changed in any way due to this virus, other than, perhaps, to bring more clarity to the need of both sentiments.

Let me start by using some of my goals for the year to put this into perspective: First, there are no “problems”; restate as “issues,” “challenges,” and “opportunities.” This is more true today than ever, we need to focus on solutions, not the "p" word. Second, lead by example, share servant leadership principles, foster an environment of joy. Positive leadership, energy, and joy is what everyone is looking for and needs now. Third, combining "Promote ideas for positive change" and "Improve the club meeting experience" brings us to the Zoom online meeting. Granted public meetings and gatherings have been suspended, but Zoom allows us to attend not only our own meetings, but it makes inter-clubbing even easier. Fifth, support and connect with all levels of SLP. Our students lives and their service leadership experiences have been upended. Their District Conventions cancelled, one of the greatest opportunities to celebrate their incredible work and sacrifices, gone. That's why our Governor's video in April focused on our SLP Governors, but they all have their own teams to celebrate as well. These celebrations, like everything else right now will be done online, but it's just not the same. Please reach out, do what you can to show them all, each and every one, the gratitude they deserve. Our message is the same today as it was on October 1st, Ignite Your Passion, and share it with others. Soon this will pass. In the meantime, please stay safe, and check in on one another. Executive Director/District Secretary

Mark McDonald

The 2019-2020 Kiwanis year has started out on a great path of success. We have been slowed down just for the moment. We are growing our signature projects for each of our clubs, adding new clubs including Special interest clubs to support our Sponsored youth. Governor Cunning has a “how to” build a K.Y.D.S. club that is designed just for this purpose. Ask for information when you have time or check out the web page.

for electronic Mark W. McDonald District Secretary/Executive Director voting. You can find this on our website under By-laws & Policies section. The next two years at the Kiwanis International Education conference and convention, will deal with a modernization of the International By-laws. Starting in Salt Lake City UT the final revisions to be presented in June 2022. Now that the convention is canceled, due to the Coronavirus, Kiwanis has assured us that a full refund will be given to registered members. The Kiwanis Council will vote on new officers for President, Vice President and Trustees. Council includes all District Governors, International Officers, European Federation Officers and Asia Pacific Officers.

Kiwanis international has determined that educational training, just like continuing education in your professional life, can be paid for out of your club service funds. When you register for a mid-year educational training, Kiwanis International Educational training or our District Educational training in August this year at the Nugget in Sparks/Reno, you can choose this option and get more of your members to the training. This should give you more hands to develop service projects and grow membership. CoronaVirus has changed our world for now. Most of you are keeping up with Board meeting and club meetings with Zoom or Go to Meeting platforms. This is a great way to keep in contact and conduct club & division business, including elections. I am reminded in talking with new members that they joined because someone asked them. At a breakfast recently, I sat next to a member of the Lions Club and he told me how he loved Key Club and Circle K in college. I asked why he did not Join Kiwanis. He said no one asked him to join! Keep up the positive good works. Ignite Your Passion • 909.989.1500 • www.cnhkiwanis.org

Our Service Leadership Programs At Work

As the Coronavirus struck, many of our clubs and SLP were not able to do all the service they had planned. But even with that, our Service Leadership Programs flourished and are ready to get started once they are able. Kudos to all the students during this unprecedented time.

Since the Service Leadership District Conventions were canceled due to the stay at home orders, Governor Timothy Cunning awarded the three 2019-2020 District Governors Circle K, Key Club and KIWIN’S with the First Lady’s Youth Service Award. Congratulations and Thank You to our young leaders.

K-KIDS For two weeks in February, the Betsy Ross Elementary School collected $4,463.06 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society’s Pennies for Patients fundraiser. The K-Kids were responsible for organizing the fundraising materials, distributing them to each class and collecting the money from each class at the end of both weeks. One K-Kids member held her own lemonade stand, created a Go Fund Me page and raised more than $300 which she donated to the fundraiser. K-KIDS (con’t) After attending the Region 3 Governor’s Visit, one Kiwanian brought back a service project to the Dulles Elementary K-Kids Club. The Kiwanian demonstrated how to make dog toys out of old t-shirts. The students paired up and made more than 50 dog pull toys within a 20 minute period. The students displayed leadership by helping others when they struggled with braiding the strips together or tying the knots. Once the stay at home order is lifted, the toys will be donated to a local animal shelter. Members of the Carlin C. Coppin Elementary School K-Kids were busy in February. Students made warm blankets and collected clothing and school supplies for residents at the Gathering Inn which provides beds and meals to more than 185 homeless men, women and children. On campus, the students also sold 600 Valentine’s Grams and raised $171.40. They prepared all the candy grams and distributed them to the individual classes. The Mountain View and Madera K-Kids had fun celebrating Valentine’s with a social and Bunco. KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 2 -- 2019 - 2020

Cocktails, dinners, auctions, and fun!

At the 2020 Mid-Year conferences in San Gabriel and Modesto, the Cal-Nev-Ha Children's Fund was proud to host the Shoot for the Moon Gala. It's safe to say that the galas were successful, fun-filled events! Our galas began with a no-host bar for guests to sip on cocktails while they mingled and enjoyed exciting items available for bidding in our silent auction. However, the highlight of our galas was definitely the live entertainment - karaoke, sung by our very own Kiwanians! Some of our most talented Kiwanians showed off their singing skills as guests enjoyed their delicious dinners.

Each gala ended with the announcement of our wine raffle winners and an exhilarating live auction. Guests had the opportunity to bid on a seven-night Hawaiian vacation, a wine country getaway, and other exciting items! Through your generosity, our galas were a massive success, with a $21,600 net income! It is only because of you that we are able to build a better future for our children. We C O P Y R I Gyou H T P Oall RTAL T E C H year! 2023 thank you for your support, and we look forward to seeing next

This is probably the most difficult article I have ever written. Over my career in Kiwanis, there have been many challenges. None like this pandemic we are currently experiencing. Together, we will get through this just as we have with past challenges. While not being able to gather in a group, Kiwanians are still finding ways to serve. They continue to deliver meals through Meals on Wheels programs. Many have volunteered to shop for the most at-risk citizens. Some are making masks including our own Immediate Past President Margo Dutton. While we were not able to personally present, more than $100,000 of scholarships have been awarded. Grants are still being awarded.

saying thank you while helping the foundation. Remember, we’re not purchasing a plaque, we are making a donation in the name of the award recipient in honor of their service. By letting the recipient know it is a donation makes the award that more special. The same can be said for a Dunlap Fellowship. It’s not a purchase, it’s a donation to the Dunlap Fellowship which provides funds for PTP, grants and scholarships. A new sustaining fund raising initiative “YES!” was introduced during the Mid-Year Conferences. The YES! (Youth Education Support) initiative raises unrestricted funds in support of SLP education sessions and conferences, grants, scholarships and any

While I’m not able to thank our student leaders in person this year, I do want to express the Foundation’s appreciation to our Key Clubs, KIWIN’S and Circle K members for raising nearly $300,000 for the Pediatric Trauma Program. The students also have provided matching funds for William A. Dunlap Fellowships. Governor visits may have been postponed where many of the Foundation awards are presented. Details on the initiative and how to donate can be found on the Foundation website, www.cnhfoundation.org. Tickets are still available for the “Dinner Anywhere” fundraiser. For a $75 donation, you have a chance to win dinner for two anywhere within the district. Last year‘s winner chose to go to Hawaii. The Kiwanis Club of Alameda held its 21st Annual Chili Cookoff fundraiser in January. With the current global pandemic, the proceeds will be given to community non-profit organizations later this spring. The evening included a chili competition and tasting, silent auction, barbecue buffet dinner, raffle, live auction and dancing.

DIVISION 4

Just before the Stay at Home order was issued, the Kiwanis Club of Alameda was able to chaperone 400 children who attended two PAL (Performance Art and Learning) shows. PAL fosters awareness of world cultures and empowers underserved youth through exposure to educational music and dance performances. Unfortunately, the Alameda schools soon closed and future shows were canceled, as well as Kiwanis’ participation.

As a condition to maintaining the number of free meals they deliver to seniors, Meals on Wheels needed to buy a freezer that was required by the Health Department. The Kiwanis Club of Santa Monica saved the day and delivered an emergency grant to Meals on Wheels. As part of “A Read Across America” celebration, the Kiwanis Club of Santa Monica gave out books and helped with crafts at the Santa Monica Public Library Storypalooza. The Kiwanis Club of Torrance honored five worthy organizations at its 10th Annual Celebration of Community Awards luncheon. Requests for nominations were sent out earlier in the year from which the club selected its honorees. Since our frontline workers have been working hard during COVID-19, the Kiwanis Club of Torrance has created its Feed Our Heroes project. BRINGING COMFORT, ONE BUDDY AT A TIME Kiwanis Club of Rancho Murieta

Mercy Folsom Hospital ER nurses pose with Rancho Murieta club members and the donated comfort buddies

AÂ presentation about the Foundation's Pediatric Trauma Program (PTP) sparked interest among the members of the Kiwanis Club of Rancho Murieta, many of whom are or have been in the medical field. That's why throughout the fall and winter months of 2019, the club crafted and supplied 200 trauma dolls to emergency rooms at their local hospitals with assistance from a PTP Grant from the Cal-Nev-Ha Children's Fund. With the help of Key Clubbers, who renamed the dolls "comfort buddies," the club sewed and packaged 200 comfort buddies to be given to children undergoing treatment in their local emergency rooms. "[We are] giving them an object to comfort them and give them a sense of control as they make the doll 'their own' by using the included markers," said Bronwyn Anthony, coordinator of the PTP team of the Rancho Murieta club. "The dolls will also assist medical personnel in helping children to understand medical procedures." The project was a massive success for the club! The comfort buddies were met with a very positive response and excitement from the hospitals, including nursing staff at Mercy Folsom Hospital. The local newspaper River Valley Times even featured the club for their generosity and service. The club is hopeful to continue this project in the near future!

Although I didn’t take on these roles with the expectation that I would be rewarded, it is extremely gratifying to have that recognized on a larger scale."

RACHEL LESLIE

"I will be studying math and Spanish while playing field hockey. It was always my goal to play division III field hockey in college, but all the schools I liked were quite expensive. Because of this scholarship, I was able to pursue my dream and not have to let my finances control my decisions. I cannot wait for the new school year where I will be able to grow as a person and accomplish great things, thanks to the generosity of CNH Key Club."

by Herman Platzke, District Chair, Kiwanis Children’s Fund

Since our last story the world has changed for all of us, but children are still the focus of the Kiwanis Children’s Fund and meeting the President’s Challenge helps kids in need. The Kiwanis Children’s Fund was shared at the Mid-Year North and South Conferences. The focus was the five major causes of the Children’s Fund and applying for a club grant. Grants are made possible with donations from generous individuals and clubs. Thank you!

President’s Challenge

The district challenge is for at least 50 percent of our clubs to donate to the Kiwanis Children’s Fund, applicable for the Lieutenant Governors in the divisions they serve, too. Total unrestricted club giving must increase by 10 percent within the district or division and is based on an average of the previous three administrative years.

How Can You and Your Club Help?

With the Coronavirus pandemic quarantine we’re not having our regular club meetings which cost about $10 to $20 with a meal and fine and happy/sad dollars. Donate that amount to your club for a donation to the Kiwanis Children’s Fund and become a Today Club.

Imagine a District Grant

This year Governor Timothy Cunning earmarked our grant money for a $4,500 scholarship for a Key Club and a KIWIN’S member along with a service project to be done by our Aktion club members.

2019 - 2020 Lieutenant Governors and Trustees

Encourage your clubs with the challenge idea above to support the Kiwanis Children’s Fund and it’s a win-win for all of us. And speaking of kids needing help, a reminder that 40 percent of grants given since 2012 have supported our Service Leadership Programs. Ignite Your Passion with a team effort!

KIWANIS INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION 2020 CANCELED The 2020 Kiwanis International Convention is canceled. The Kiwanis International Board of Trustees declared a condition of emergency exists because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The board concluded that conducting a convention for the 2019-20 administrative year would be inadvisable and impracticable because of the health threat to Kiwanis members, their families and all individuals traveling to and from the convention. “It is with profound sadness we make this decision today,” said Daniel Vigneron, 2019-20 Kiwanis International President. “All of us looked forward to gathering in Indianapolis to conduct the business of the organization, partake in great Kiwanis education and, of course, enjoy the fun and fellowship of our Kiwanis friends.” Those who have registered for the convention received an email with details about their refund. Additional questions can be sent to registration@kiwanis.org. The only other interruption in annual conventions came during World War II when it was necessary to substitute a Kiwanis International council meeting for the convention. A small administrative convention was conducted in 1943 and 1944 with limited attendance. In 1945, the Kiwanis International Council again conducted the necessary business, but in 1946, Kiwanis resumed its regular convention operation. Nearly 10,000 people attended that convention, breaking all convention attendance records. A meeting of the Kiwanis International council will be held before October 1, 2020. Details are being finalized. The Kiwanis International Council consists of the Board of Trustees, past Kiwanis International Presidents, District Governors and the Chairs of the Kiwanis International-European Federation and Kiwanis Asia-Pacific. “We are disappointed the 2020 convention is canceled,” said Stan Soderstrom, Kiwanis International Executive Director. “We hope you will join us for the 2021 convention in Salt Lake City, Utah. Planning is well underway to present important and timely Kiwanis education. Additionally, many of the important decisions that were scheduled for a vote at the annual meeting in June will be delayed until next year.”

The 2021 convention in Salt Lake City is scheduled for June 23-26.
