CNH DISTRICT CONVENTION 2020

-- CANCELED --

Cal-Nev-Ha Magazine - Volume 3 -- 2019-2020

ZOOM . . .

Governor Timothy Cunning CNH District Governor 2019-2020

Kiwanis VCON was a huge success. Thank you to everyone involved in making it happen, from the presenters in 4 different time zones, to the office staff, Team Ginger for the countless preparation meetings, and Geoff Tobias for his magnificent graphics. Compliments have been coming in from around the world for offering this training opportunity in the absence of International Convention.

Speaking of creative, how about the clubs that have actually added members during this shutdown? I believe this pandemic has provided us more opportunities to show everyone what we’ve been able to accomplish and how we’ve been able to provide service to those in need. We couldn’t ask for a better recruiting tool. And with virtual meetings, invite as many potential new hands of service as you can. Let them see what your meetings are like, and how easy it is to attend, no cost, no traffic, and maybe even with no pants.

There truly was much to celebrate at VCON. It was very inspirational to read all of the Res Non Verba award submissions. So many Kiwanians have embraced the opportunity to adapt in this COVID-19 era. Times change, for those of you for whom I’ve done my official visits, you know that this is the central point of my Governor’s message. COVID-19 has forced us to change. We now know the benefits of Zoom meetings, and even when we are allowed to get back to in person meetings, virtual meetings have proven to be beneficial. One of the most significant challenges during quarantine has been the effect it has had on Club fundraising efforts. Most established fundraising opportunities have evaporated due to the in person nature of most activities. I know this challenge is still being brainstormed by clubs, but VCON revealed a virtual Murder Mystery Fundraiser, and a socially distanced food drive/fundraiser. We simply need to get creative. As our vision for VCON was to be a primer for DCON, the stage was set, and we created great anticipation for August. Unfortunately, that anticipation could not conquer the impact of COVID-19. For the health and welfare of all our members, DCON has officially been canceled. Gary Gray and his team are moving forward to create an online seminar training schedule. Additionally, we look forward to holding our District elections pursuant to our District Bylaws $UWLFOH VI, Section 16. Looking forward to the day we can all safely meet in person again. Thank you for your dedication and service to Kiwanis, our communities, and our children. Ignite Your Passion • 909.989.1500 • www.cnhkiwanis.org

District Secretary News! District Convention canceled! Over the weekend of June 27 & 28 the Governors of the State of Nevada and California took a step back on reopening the states to Phase 2. In Nevada this meant that groups of 50 or less would be allowed to meet. On Monday June 29th, the District leadership met to consider what was best for the District and the health of our members. It did not take long to conclude it would not be safe to continue with convention plans. On Tuesday morning, a Board of Trustees meeting was called for Monday, July 6, 2020 to ratify this decision to cancel. As well as cancel the Aktion Club Educational Training in October and the Circle K Fall Training in November.

We will include seminars and have an award session at a virtual awards lunch on Friday, August 14, 2020.

This has been a difficult decision to reach as some members do not want to risk travel or meetings and some are unhappy we are not moving forward. With the health and safety of our members and student leadership in mind, all of the events are canceled.

Keep your members engaged, reach out to the members you have not heard from and do a welfare check.

On Saturday, August 15, 2020, we will have a District House of Delegates to conduct elections. The delegates that are allowed per the Bylaws will be contacted to register for this part of the meeting. This election will be broadcast on Facebook Live as it happens, so all of our members can view the events. This year has turned out to be a challenge for all of us to meet and conduct community service. As someone once said when someone gives you lemons make lemonade.

As you are, we at the District office look forward to better times to come.

Now plans for a virtual event are under way. The plan is to conduct the 2019–2020 District Board of Trustees meeting as scheduled on August 13, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. and the 2020–2021 District Board of Trustees meeting at approximately 4:00 p.m. or immediately following the 2019-2020 Board meeting.

A lot has happened since our last article. February started off with a lot of promise. Two extremely successful Mid-Year Galas, and the launch of a well-accepted sustaining initiative. Everything was finally falling into place when suddenly, life as we knew it changed drastically. Still, through it all, the Cal-Nev-Ha Children’s Fund has awarded more than $100,000 in scholarships to our student leaders, nearly $100,000 in Pediatric Trauma Program grants to our partner hospitals, as well as more than $25,000 in grants to our Kiwanis clubs this year. True, we were not able to present scholarships in person, which was disappointing; however, we did the next best thing and announced the awardees during the SLP’s virtual District Conventions. After a great introduction, the YES! initiative suddenly came to a stand-still as Kiwanians sought to define what exactly life in a pandemic would look like. Even in these hard times, with new hardships emerging each day, Kiwanians understand the need to support our youth is just as important today as it was prior to the pandemic. Kiwanians are

leading with their hearts and letting their passion for youth guide their decisions. Kiwanians are doing what they can to support YES! and our other Kiwanis programs, knowing that the needs do not go away during a pandemic; they increase. In response, the Cal-Nev-Ha Children’s Fund created a special COVID-19 assistance grant in May. Since its inception, the Cal-Nev-Ha Children’s Fund has awarded nearly $13,000 to 27 Kiwanis clubs to support their COVID-19 relief efforts, but we could use your help in ensuring we can continue to meet this demand. You can help by making a gift to our YES! Initiative or purchasing a raffle ticket for your chance to win dinner anywhere in the Cal-Nev-Ha District. Flip to the last page of this issue for details about our Dinner Anywhere raffle! Club Presidents recently received a mailer requesting, if your club has the means, a donation to our Founder’s Day program. Remember, it’s these gifts that support the children in our shared communities, our student leaders and our clubs. Thank you for your continued support! REBUILDING

WITH

KIWANIS

The COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing, with cases continuing to rise throughout the United States. However, with the help of Kiwanians, like the Kiwanis Club of Milpitas, our communities are getting the support they need. The Milpitas Food Pantry provides meals and other services to low-income families in the community, but as the pandemic grew more severe, so did their need for funding. That's why the Kiwanis Club of Milpitas used a

Community Assistance Grant

from the Cal-Nev-Ha Children's Fund to provide

financial support to the Milpitas Food Pantry, an organization they and their SLP members (pictured above) have assisted in the past.

“The food pantry provides meals for low-income families, many of which include children," shared Club President Ron Lind. "[This project] will help feed those who are struggling, particularly during the pandemic. The club hopes to coordinate with SLP members to provide safe food distribution to families who visit the pantry. They also hope to "adopt" the pantry to continuously provide financial and logistical support for years to come! The Cal-Nev-Ha Children's Fund has already provided more than $7,600 in COVID-19 Community Assistance Grants, and we stand at the ready with more funds to help your clubs support your communities affected by the pandemic. Together, we will rebuild and get through this.

Times have changed how we do service. Clubs and divisions have had to find new ways to conduct their meetings. How do we do service without jeopardizing our members health and well being? What projects are still relevant? In this critical time, club members have found ways to continue helping their communities and children with new and renewed events. With club events and fundraisers postponed and/or canceled, new events and projects have come to light.

DIVISION 2

The Kiwanis Club of Alameda found a way to clean up and weed the Jean Sweeney Open Space Park. Special arrangements were made for those Kiwanians wanting to work on their own, due to the current healthcare crisis. A second clean-up event may be planned for the future. The Kiwanis Club of Oakland Foundation held its annual scholarship meeting where a total of $12,000 in scholarships were awarded to graduates. Due to the current situation, the annual luncheon was replaced by a Zoom meeting. The Scholarship Foundation has been providing financial support to deserving graduates of Oakland public high schools since its inception in 1955. The Foundation has awarded more than $1 PLOOLRQ in scholarships over the years. During the pandemic, the Kiwanis Club of Oakland celebrated a milestone - the club’s 100th Anniversary. Congratulations to all its current and past members! Job well done! KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 3 -- 2019 - 2020

The Kiwanis Club of Napa recently awarded $18,500 in scholarships to 27 deserving seniors from five nearby high schools. The school selection committees are provided with the club’s criteria of community involvement, school leadership, minimum GPA and acceptance into a college or trade school. After matching students to the criteria, relatives of club members and students active in Key Club are given preference.

For kids in Burbank and throughout the State of California, daily lives have been critically impacted due to school closures during the pandemic. Children not only missed the structured school settings, but many lack school supplies and books, leaving families without the resources needed to educate their children at home. Recognizing the opportunity to make a difference, the Kiwanis Club of Burbank launched a book distribution program that provided 3,000 books to local school kids. Books were donated and distributed by club volunteers over a three week period through the school district’s food service program. Matt Hill, Burbank Unified School District Superintendent stated, “Now, more than ever, children need access to books. Our focus must remain on literacy and a book provides our students with some normalcy. We are grateful for the support of the Kiwanis Club of Burbank.” The total value of in-kind donations for the project totalled more than $25,000.

DIVISION 19

For several weeks now the Kiwanis Club of Torrance has been thanking first responders throughout the city with a special meal. While some clubs have been struggling to meet, hold fundraisers or service projects, clubs like the Kiwanis Club of La Palma has found a way. Throughout the school year, club members would keep a food pantry stocked with food for students at Kennedy High School. With the closure of school, these students were unable to get a snack or food. The club was notified of five families in need of food, so they have taken it upon themselves to provide food to these families throughout the summer. As part of a continuing service project, the Kiwanis Club of Placentia stocks and maintains Blessing Boxes throuJhout the city twice a year. They usually have the months of December and April. Even during Covid and the Shelter in Place order, the club did not stop making sure the boxes were filled with food for the residents. Further up the road, the Kiwanis Club of La Mirada has pitched in to help a local church ministry in its food distribution program. Members have helped sort and fill boxes on Thursday nights for delivery on Friday morning to residents shut in during the pandemic. To date, more than 2,000 boxes have been distributed throughout the city. KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 3 -- 2019 - 2020

On Palm Sunday, the Kiwanis Club of Healdsburg would normally have had a Pancake Breakfast. This year, they organized a virtual pancake breakfast and posted it on Facebook. The club invited people to cook their own pancakes and make a donation to the Kiwanis Club. The online donations toWaled $130. Another unique fundraiser for the club was a card sale. A local Hallmark store owner was retiring and subsequently closing the store. A couple members who missing the closing event offered their help. The store owners said to come by and pick up a few things. They would not take the Kiwanis members money for the goods they “bought”. They ended up with 12 grocery bags of stationary sets, office supplies, envelopes, three large boxes of assorted cards, poster boards and the rack. That night, club members thought about the projects they do throughout the year -Valentine’s Day cards for Meals on Wheels recipients, etc. and wondered if the store could still help. After discussing it with the owner, they said come on down. The store gave them all the remaining cards (25 boxes) plus four card carousels, three boxes of Halloween/party decor, photo frames, etc. In an effort to raise some money, the club decided to hold an “Invitation Only” sale where all cards were $1.00 each. All the proceeds went to the North Bay Kiwanis’ Scholarship Fund. 13

DIVISION 34

At its February Division Council Meeting, Division 34 met at Second Harvest Food Bank of Silicon Valley. Division 34 members and other organizations helped sort and package up to 8,400 pounds of food and water for distribution for Second Harvest.

“The Objects of Kiwanis” To give primacy to the human and spiritual rather than to the material values of life. To encourage the daily living of the Golden Rule in all human relationships. To promote the adoption and the application of higher social, business and professional standards. To develop, by precept and example, a more intelligent, aggressive and serviceable citizenship. To provide, through Kiwanis clubs, a practical means to form enduring friendships, to render altruistic service and to build better communities. To cooperate in creating and maintaining that sound public opinion and high idealism which make possible the increase of righteousness, justice, patriotism and goodwill.

Lieutenant Governor Derek Lubich reminded clubs that even if they aren’t meeting, they can still do their part. In this time of need, club outreach is more important than ever, whether it is making masks, delivering food, donating to a food bank or writing thank you cards for frontline hospital workers. Every little bit makes a difference.

The six permanent Objects of Kiwanis International were approved by Kiwanis club delegates at the 1924 Kiwanis International Convention in Denver, Colorado. Through the decades, they have remained unchanged. KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 3 -- 2019 - 2020

Since October, the club has supported the Safe Passage gang diversion program through financial grants and volunteering at various events. On weekends during the coronavirus emergency, Safe Passage provided basic human needs to the families whose kids were in the program. Kiwanis Club of Conejo Valley members helped assemble and distribute the care packages. During the pandemic, the Kiwanis Club of Moorpark collected, sorted and transported donations to the Moorpark Pantry Plus. Before schools closed, the club was able to hold a TERRIFIC Kids ceremony at Mountain Meadows Elementary School. The Kiwanis Club of Oxnard donated coffee, pastries and breakfast burritos to the staff at two different Covid-19 testing centers. The club supported small business by buying the goodies locally.

magazine@cnh.simplelists.com The Kiwanis Club of Santa Barbara awarded seven $1,500 scholarships to local graduating seniors. The club normally has a dinner to celebrate the occasion, but because of community isolation, the club had to be more creative. Kiwanis members went to the student homes, met them outside with the check, flowers, a cake and a full dinner for the entire family. One of the awards they give out is the Brad Naegle Award. It is given to the student that is most likely to be a Kiwanian. Sherrly Varagas, this year’s recipient, showed kindness, compassion, thoughtfulness, commitment and leadership skills that Kiwanis represents. She attended Kiwanis weekly meetings, Key Leader training and helped with the Aktion Club. KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 3 -- 2019 - 2020

The Kiwanis Club of Palm Springs had a recent story run in its local newspaper. Here is an excerpt from the article: Kiwanis is an international service club founded in 1915 in Detroit, Michigan. There are members in the Kiwanis family representing nearly every culture on every continent -- all-seeking to improve people’s lives. Kiwanians give their time to make their lcoal communities a better place. Here in the Coachella Valley the local chapter is the Kiwanis Club of Palm Springs (KCOPS). From making sure local high school students have an opportunity for a higher education through its Kiwanis Scholarship Program, to hosting a yearly Baseball Clinic and offering grants to deserving non-profits in the valley the Kiwanis Club of Palm Springs makes a positive difference in the lives of many children and their families. Thanks to fundraising efforts and the support of its members this summer the giving has not stopped. Although their Baseball Clinic was canceled due to COVID-19 health concerns, the club has remained active in other ways. In early April KCOPS presented Well in the Desert a grant to assist in their efforts to provide daily nutritious hot meals, emergency food assistance, weekly supplemental food distribution and a wide array of services benefitting those in need KIWANIS California-Nevada-Hawaii District -- Volume 3 -- 2019 - 2020

In May the Kiwanis Scholarship Committee reviewed applications from local high school students. All students served as Key Club members in their respective schools.  Key Club is an international, student-led organization at the high school level that provides members with opportunities to provide service, build character and develop leadership. “Watching these incredible young people accept responsibility in their community has been genuinely inspiring,” states Key Club advisor and Kiwanis member Tony Lopes. Key Club member activities included Bell Ringing for the Salvation Army holiday project, assisting in Tour de Palm Springs, tutoring at the school district’s elementary and middle schools, Veteran’s Day flag placement at the Field of Dreams in Cathedral City. Tony describes with beaming proud eyes. He continues, “I became a Kiwanian many years ago to serve my community and those who need assistance both financially and spiritually. As a retired educator, I wanted to share my experience and knowledge with the youth at the schools I serve.” “Every student deserves an opportunity to attend college.   I wish we could give scholarships to all,” adds Jack Lacy, Kiwanis board member and owner of Lasr-Ink. “We look for candidates that have demonstrated academic achievement, community service and commitment to learning in the face of adversity,” adds Lacy. Ten local high school graduates were selected to receive scholarships through the KCOPS Scholarship Program. Tony Lopes adds, “While we were happy to give out ten scholarships, we only wish we had more dollars to award.” The Kiwanis Club of Palm Springs funds their scholarship program by selling See’s Candy each fall from November to December. While the Kiwanis Club of Palm Springs only has thirteen members. Its reach is wide and the need to help other local non-profits is much needed. by Herman Platzke, District Chair, Kiwanis Children’s Fund

As we continue learning new ways to communicate during the COVID-19 crisis, children around the world need Kiwanis more than ever. Together we can make a difference through a club gift to the Children’s Fund and accomplish two goals at the same time. One, become a Today Club and, two, meet the President’s Challenge along with making an impact improving children’s lives. The COVID-19 crisis brought lost wages, isolation, illness, hunger, and anxiety. Families struggle with wide-ranging effects of the coronavirus and Kiwanis helps with the hard times experienced. From Uganda to Louisiana, Taiwan to Ohio, Kiwanis clubs are feeding the hungry, providing students with the resources for online schooling and helping families deal with hardships stemming from the pandemic. The Kiwanis Children’s Fund began receiving requests for assistance, and COVID-19 grants up to $2,500 were the order of the day. $115,000 has been provided through the grants with another $200,000 in pending requests. In early May, seeing the need to fund the requests the Children’s Fund received a matching grant of $50,000. On May 11, 2020, a team of 144 Kiwanis volunteers around the world began a fundraiser on Facebook for one week and raised $65,000! Several volunteers from our district, our governor, past governors, our trustee, and I had goals of $250. We were challenged to match some of the goal as a catalyst. All of us exceeded our goals! Through Kiwanis friends and friends in the community and around the country, I changed my goal several times and raised more than $1,200. Many clubs had fundraisers canceled due to the coronavirus but wanted to help during this crisis and Kiwanis Children’s Fund was able to help due to the generous donations made by clubs and individuals. Kiwanis clubs around the world used their COVID-19 grants to help children with food, laptops, internet capability, masks, and hand sanitizer. Clubs receive an annual club gift campaign request from the Kiwanis Children’s Fund. Has your club taken the request to the board for a decision? Through May, 12% of our clubs have given with a goal of 50 percent. Together we can make a difference around the world.
