In the 2008-09 season, Azevedo produced a pair of NCAA qualifiers and Pami earned All-American honors by placing seventh at 165 pounds.

The Mustangs finished sixth in the Pac-10 Conference Championships with Pami claiming his second indition at Cal State Bakersfield from 1981-84, followed by two years as an vidual title and Filip Novachkov placing third. assistant as Notre Dame.

The 2007-08 season nearly saw Azevedo’s first NCAA champion.

2010-11 Coaching Staff Mark Perry, Co-Head Coach, Second Season Two-time national champion and four-time All-American Mark Perry was added to the Cal Poly wrestling coaching staff as an assistant coach for the 2009-10 season and has been elevated to co-head coach for the 201011 campaign.

“I think this will be great experience for Mark and his future as a head coach,” said Azevedo.

When Perry was hired as assistant coach in the summer of 2009, Azevedo said, “I believe his passion for wrestling and winning will help Cal Poly wrestling go to the next level of becoming the best. Mark brings an extensive amount of individual and team success to the program.”

Perry, a two-time national champion and four-time All-American at Iowa, spent the 2008-09 season as an assistant coach at Penn State before coming to Cal Poly a year ago.

“Being promoted to co-head coach is a huge honor for me and I am confident that I will be able to continue to help this program move forward in its quest toward winning Pac-10 titles and NCAA trophies,” said Perry. “The future of Cal Poly wrestling is going to be exciting. I guarantee our fans and alumni we are going to be one of the top programs in the country on a consistent basis in the near future.”

With his title in 2008 Perry became the 17th four-time All-American and 14th twotime national champion in NCAA history.

During his 2007 NCAA run, Perry defeat-

ed two-time NCAA champion Johny Hendricks in the finals on his way to a 32-5 overall record.

Both his NCAA titles came at 165 pounds.

As a sophomore at the NCAAs, Perry placed third at 174 pounds, earning the Gorriaran Trophy for pinning four opponents at the championships.

As a freshman he placed second at 165 pounds, posting a 32-5 overall record.

Perry was a team captain all four years at Iowa and was a Big Ten Conference finalist four times, capturing one title in 2007. He also was a four-time finalist in the prestigious Midlands Wrestling Tournament, earning two titles.

Perry was named National Wrestling Coaches Association rookie of the year in 2005 and University of Iowa athlete of the year in 2007.

Perry was a two-time prep national champion while attending Blair Academy, located 60 miles west of New York City, in rural Warren County, New Jersey. He was a threetime AISCS High School All-American while posting a career 169-7 record.

Perry earned his bachelor of arts in art in 2008 from the University of Iowa.

At Penn State in 2008-09, Perry coached a pair of Nittany Lion wrestlers to freshman All-American honors. He has directed Mark Perry Wrestling Camps nationwide the last four summers and worked at various other wrestling camps throughout the nation from

2004-06.

He has served as a volunteer coach for youth wrestling clubs throughout Eastern Iowa, participated in the University of Iowa's Day of Caring from 2004-08, and performed volunteer maintenance and miscellaneous work for St. John's Catholic Church in Stillwater, Okla.

Tyrel Todd, Assistant Coach, First Season Tyrel Todd, a three-time NCAA AllAmerican and the 2009 Big Ten Conference champion at 197 pounds while wrestling at Michigan, was hired as an assistant wrestling coach at Cal Poly in August 2010.

Todd will continue training for Olympic and World teams while coaching the Mustang wrestlers.

"Bringing Tyrel Todd on board is a huge asset for our program in every way possible," said Perry. "He is one of the top big guy coaches in the country and he will be training for World and Olympic titles right along side our athletes, so it will bring extra motivation in the room.

"Tyrel brings the type of passion and intensity we want out of our athletes and we look for it to rub off on them," Perry added. "We believe Tyrel will be a big part of Cal Poly's success toward moving to the top of the national rankings."

Todd placed third as a junior (2008), fourth as a senior (2009) and fifth as a sophomore (2007) at the nationals and also was a national qualifier as a freshman in 2006. He was a Cliff Keen Invitational champion at 184 pounds in 2007 and earned Academic All-

Big Ten honors in 2006.

30, including a 54-11 mark in dual meets. He recorded 22 career falls, including 10 as a senior.

In addition to his Big Ten title in 2009, Todd placed second in 2008, third in 2007 and fifth in 2006. He posted a 25-3 record as a senior, 34-4 as a junior and 28-8 as a sophomore. In his junior season he put together a career-best and team-high 21-match winning streak.

Todd, a two-year team captain at Michigan, placed fourth at the 2008 Olympic Trials and fifth in the 2007 U.S. Open, both in freestyle at 84 kg (185 pounds).

Todd, a 2004 graduate of Bozeman High School in Montana, was a three-time Montana state champion and state runner-up as a freshman, compiling a 136-6 career prep record, including undefeated sophomore and junior seasons. He also competed in football, serving as team captain and earning all-state accolades as a senior.

Todd earned his degree in secondary education (history and psychology) at Michigan in 2009 and was an assistant coach with the Wolverine wrestling team last season. His father Jeff wrestled at Montana State.

Mustangs at NCAA Championships Chad Mendes 2008 NCAA Runner-Up Chad Mendes completed one of the most storied seasons by a Cal Poly wrestler in the program’s history in 2008, tallying a 30-0 record before dropping a 5-2 decision to Ohio State’s J Jaggers in the NCAA Championship bout.

Mendes will be remembered as one of the all-time greats to walk the halls of Mott Gym. The Hanford, Calif. native recorded seven falls, eight major decisions and one technical fall in 2008. He pinned Paul Moseman of Cal State Bakersfield in just 13 seconds on Nov. 18 at the Fullerton Open and wooed a large crowd at Cal Poly by pinning the then-No. 2 ranked 141-pounder in the nation, Minnesota’s Manuel Rivera, in 1 minute, 34 seconds.

At the NCAA Championships, Mendes won his first match by fall in just 34 seconds.

Among his many accomplishments, Mendes won a Pac-10 title in 2008 and was also named the conference’s Wrestler of the Year. He also won tournament titles at the Michigan State Open and Fullerton Open and became the eighth wrestler in program history to navigate an undefeated dual slate.

Mendes finished his career with an impressive 64-14 record. He was an AllAmerican at 125 pounds in 2006 before

Chase Pami 2010 NCAA Runner-Up Cal Poly’s Chase Pami became the sixth NCAA Division I runner-up in Mustang wrestling history last March.

Trying to become the third Division I national champion, Pami led 2-1 early in the first period, but eventually fell 6-4 to top-seeded and four-time NCAA AllAmerican J.P. O'Connor of Harvard in the 157-pound final at the Qwest Center Omaha.

Pami closed out his Cal Poly career with a 29-7 record as a senior and a 10035 career mark.

Pami, the lowest seeded wrestler in the championship finals, tried to become the first Cal Poly wrestler in 34 years to capture a Division I national title. Tom Kline won in 1969 and Mark DiGirolamo accomplished the feat in 1976.

Pami earned his 100th career win in the semifinals with a 13-5 major decision against Justin Lister of Binghamton.

Pami placed seventh in the 2009 NCAA meet and is the ninth two-time AllAmerican at Cal Poly. The others were Kline, Mark Tracey, Vic Moreno, Louie

Montano, Chad Mendes, Rodger Warner, Gary Fischer and Darrell Vasquez.

Pami also joins Kline (1968), John Woods (1969), Cliff Hatch (1975), Montano (1983) and Chad Mendes (2008) as the only Mustangs to earn secondplace finishes at the Division I nationals.

Pami captured back-to-back Pac-10 Conference titles at 157 pounds in 2008 and 2009. Only other Mustangs to claim consecutive Pac-10 championships are Eric Osborne (1987-88) and Jake Gaeir (1993-94).

Pami was an NCAA qualifier all four seasons at Cal Poly. He finished 27-9 as a junior, 24-6 as a sophomore and 20-13 as a freshman.

He was a two-time Nevada state champion and four-time high school AllAmerican while wrestling at Cimarron Memorial High School in Las Vegas. He was 185-14 in his prep career.

Pami recently conducted a clinic for youth wrestlers at San Marcos High School in Santa Barbara.

On Jan. 15, 2008, Mendes became the first Cal Poly wrestler to earn a No. 1 ranking by pollsters since Scott Heaton and Rick Worel did so together in 1980.

After graduating from Cal Poly in the spring of 2008, Mendes embarked upon a professional fighting career with the Palace Fighting Championship circuit.

After winning all five fights, he signed a six-fight deal with the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) in October 2009.

Competing in the featherweight division, Mendes appears ready to enter the UFC with an undefeated 9-0 record after beating Javier Vazquez by unanimous decision at WEC 52 on Nov 11, 2010.

His favorite technique is the wushu finger hold.

“It’s a great opportunity and a great honor to be competing in the WEC,” said Mendes. “This is where I’ve always wanted to fight and it’s awesome to be a part of such a huge organization Mendes scored his first knockout in his fourth career fight against Steve Siler. He broke his hand early in the second round against Mike Joy, but won by unanimous decision before getting a metal plate and eight screws put in after the fight.

Mustangs Return to National Polls

After an absence of a few years, the Cal Poly wrestling team is back in the national rankings.

The Mustangs were ranked anywhere from No. 15 to 25 most of the 2009-10 season, finished tied for 18th in the NCAA National Championships and opened the 2010-11 campaign with national rankings from No. 16 to 28.

Co-head coaches John Azevedo and Mark Perry guided the Mustangs to to an early No. 16 ranking in WIN Magazine's Tournament Power Index, a measure of how a team will do in tournament competition.

Amateur Wrestling News ranked Cal Poly No. 18 while WrestlingReport.com places the Mustangs 19th. The Mustangs are receiving votes in the National Wrestling Coaches Association poll.

Individually, the Novachkov brothers are receiving the highest rankings.

After a break for Thanksgiving, Boris Novachkov captured the 133- takedowns, one escape and riding time to pound championship in the 28th Annual Cliff Keen Las Vegas Collegiate earn a 14-5 major decision against Mike Kent.

No. 12 Boise State rode a technical fall Filip Novachkov, seeded sixth at 141 pounds, settled for second place as he dropped a 5-3 decision to top-seeded Reece Humphrey of Ohio by No. 1-ranked Kirk Smith and victories in two matches pitting nationally ranked State. Pami placed fifth at 157 pounds.

Cal Poly finished seventh among 44 schools in the team standings with wrestlers as the Broncos defeated Cal Poly 23-13. The Mustangs won just two 78.5 points.

Needing a victory in the final match, Maldonado earned a technical fall of the nine contested matches and as the Mustangs beat Cal State Bakersfield 22-18 in another Pac-10 dual received a forfeit at 133.

Doss and DesRoches earned champimeet at the Icardo Center, stretching their season-opening dual winning onships at the California Collegiates hoststreak to three.

Cal Poly also received victories from Maldonado, Pami, DesRoches ed by San Francisco State. Doss won four matches at 157 pounds, including an 8-2 and the Novachkov brothers.

Boris Novachkov and decision against Andrew Balch of Cal DesRoches earned second-place State Bakersfield in the finals. by Colby Covington at 174 pounds, to rally from a 14-6 deficit and beat Cal Poly 21-18.

Cal Poly won three consecutive bouts to build the early lead. Filip Novachkov earned an 11-2 major decision over Mike Mangrum at 141 and Fisher pinned No. 17 RJ Pena in 5 minutes, 27 seconds to win the 149-pound bout. Pami completed the run with a 14-5 major decision against Keegan Davis in another matchup of nationally ranked wrestlers.

Cal Poly seniors Micah Ferguson and Pami earned victories in their final duals as Mustangs and Filip Novachkov won by a fall as the Mustangs defeated UC Davis 34-7.

At the Pac-10 Championships hosted by UC Davis, Boris Novachkov captured the conference title at 133 pounds, four other Mustangs finished second and DesRoches claimed third place at 174 as Cal Poly settled for a third-place team finish after leading in the first two sessions.

The quartet of Mustangs who placed second were Filip Novachkov at

141 pounds, Fisher at 149, Pami at 157 and Smith at 197.

Three weeks later at the NCAA Championships in Omaha, Neb., Pami became the sixth NCAA Division I runner-up in Mustang wrestling history. Trying to become the third Division I national champion, Pami led 2-1 early in the first period, but eventually fell 6-4 to top-seeded J.P. O'Connor of Harvard in the 157-pound final.

Boris Novachkov claimed seventh place and All-American honors after pinning Steve Bell of Maryland in the second period of their 133-pound bout. Novachkov posted a 4-2 mark in the three-day tournament and finished the year with a 28-5 record (56-17 in his Cal Poly career).

Cal Poly, earning a pair of All-American honors in the nationals for the first time in six years, finished in a tie for 18th place with Michigan State, each with 30 points. Darrell Vasquez was fourth at 133 pounds and Vic Moreno placed sixth at 125 in 2004.

Iceman: My Fighting Life

Chuck ‘The Iceman’ Liddell Cal Poly 1988-93

C

huck Liddell ranks as one of, if not the, most famous Cal Poly graduates in the school’s history. For two years Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell reigned as the UFC light heavyweight champion, but before that, Liddell starred in Mott Gym as a 190-pound wrestler.

Recently, Liddell released a book that chronicles his life as a fighter. Iceman: My Fighting Life debuted on February 17, 2008, and spent multiple weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Liddell started training for his career at the age of 12 in Santa Barbara. He was a four-year starter on the football team at San Marcos High School, and became a Division I wrestler at Cal Poly in 1988. After spending five years on the wrestling squad, Liddell would complete his degree while pursuing a career as a professional fighter, graduating in 1995 with a B.A.in business. As a graduation gift to himself, he had his iconic tattoo inked on his scalp which reads “Koei-Kan” (“prosper with happiness.”) He would then transition to mixed martial artist when he earned a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under John Lewis, ultimately aiming for a career that would take his fame and fortune to a new level.

Liddell made his UFC debut in 1998 with a decision victory over Noe Hernandez. He soon established his reputation as a devastating striker with victories over Tito Ortiz, Renato Sobral and Wanderlei Silva over the next few years. On May 26, 2004, he knocked out Randy Couture in two minutes to

win the Light Heavyweight Title. He defended his titles successfully five times, all ending with either a knockout or a TKO. He surrendered his belt after losing in a matchup with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, three years to the day of being crowned champion.

Despite his busy schedule as a fighter and a world-renowned celebrity, Liddell still takes time to remember his roots as a Cal Poly Mustang.

Liddell can often be seen matside at Cal Poly matches and is an avid fan of the team. He was inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 11, 2009.

Cal Poly’s Learn by Doing principle of instruction prepares undergraduates for careers in applied technical and professional fields. Athletically, Cal Poly boasts one of the most successful Division I programs for an institution of its size. During the 2009-10 academic year, the athletics department – which sponsors 20 varsity programs – captured Big West Conference championships in women’s soccer, men’s cross country and men’s tennis and enjoyed the All-America selections of wrestlers Chase Pami and Boris Novachkov. Women’s basketball forward Kristina Santiago was named Big West Player of the Year while softball designated player Anna Cahn earned Big West Field Player of the Year praise. Mustangs earned 42 all-conference honors while seven Cal Poly student-athletes were named Big West Freshman of the Year in their respective sports.

As testament to Cal Poly’s athletics and academic integrity, 38 Mustangs collected Big West All-Academic praise during the 2009-10 school year. The Cal Poly Athletics Department also finished second in the Big West Commissioner’s Cup, an award presented to the institution with the best overall results in the conference's 18 sponsored sports.

Internationally, Cal Poly was represented at the 2008 Summer Olympics by former Mustangs Sharon Day (United States, high jump), Jimmy Van Ostrand (Canada, baseball) and Stephanie Brown Trafton, whose gold medal for the United States in the discus competition was the first such feat by a Mustang athlete.

CAL POLY AN ACADEMIC DYNASTY 17 YEARS IN THE MAKING For the 17th-straight year, Cal Poly was rated by U.S. News and World Report as the best public master’s university in the western United States in its 2010 America’s Best Colleges guidebook. Cal Poly moved up four spots from 10th to sixth in the publication’s overall list of the west’s best universities – including both public and private institutions – that provide “a full range of undergraduate and master’s-level programs but few, if any, doctoral programs.” The publication ranks colleges that grant doctoral degrees, such as those in the University of California system, in a separate category.

“Perhaps the most important gauge of the effectiveness of Cal Poly’s educational programs is how successful our graduates are in the real world,” said former Cal Poly President Warren J. Baker, who retired in 2010 after serving for 31 years. “We hear that our graduates are doing great things and we take pride in that.

Getting a ranking in U.S. News for the 17th straight year, however, helps to validate the quality of our pro-

grams and the success of our gifted faculty in preparing students to meet the challenges they will face.”

Within individual areas of study, U.S. News and World Report ranked Cal Poly’s College of Engineering No. 3 among public engineering programs for schools whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s (Cal Poly was bested only by the United States Military and Naval Academies).

A number of College of Engineering programs ranked high in the Best Undergraduate Engineering Programs categories. Cal Poly’s industrial and manufacturing, computer, electrical and mechanical engineering programs were each ranked as the top program at a public university in their respective specialty categories. With the Orfalea College of Business in the background, O’Neill Green hosts, among other activities, a tailgate prior to football games at the adjacent and recently remodeled Alex G. Spanos Stadium. A 1948 graduate of the College of Agriculture, the late Richard J. O’Neill is the founder of Supporters of Mustang Athletics Teams (SUMAT) and was instrumental in helping to stabilize funding for Cal Poly.

n the 1890s, when a proposal for a teacher training school in San Luis Obispo seemed unlikely to succeed, California State Senator Sylvester C. Smith instead suggested a polytechnic institute. Myron Angel, chronicler of San Luis Obispo County history, became an ardent supporter of the idea and articulated a vision to establish a school that would “teach the hand as well as the head.” The plan succeeded and on March 8, 1901, legislation was signed founding the California Polytechnic School, then a vocational high school.

During the ensuing three decades, Cal Poly evolved into the modern equivalent of a junior college, but its future became uncertain. In 1933, however, Julian A. McPhee, chief of the California Bureau of Agricultural Education, saved the institution from abolishment by agreeing to become school president. During the next 33 years, McPhee guided Cal Poly’s transformation into a four-year institution and set an educational standard still emulated today.

Cal Poly’s first baccalaureate exercises were held in May 1942 and in 1947, the institution was officially renamed California State Polytechnic College. As programs continued to evolve, the institution became California Polytechnic State University in 1972.

INTERIM PRESIDENT DR. ROBERT GLIDDEN r. Robert Glidden, president emeritus of Ohio University, was named interim president of Cal Poly on Aug. 1. Glidden assumed the appointment following the July 31 departure of retiring President Warren J. Baker. Glidden will serve until the presidential search is completed.

As President Emeritus at Ohio, Glidden oversaw a public research institution with 20,000 students and an additional 9,000 students on five regional campuses throughout southeast Ohio. During his tenure as President at Ohio (1994-04), Glidden led strategic planning efforts that engaged the community and refocused Ohio’s mission to solidify its status as one of America’s top 100 research universities. He oversaw the technological development of the institution and established the Office of Nationally Competitive Awards, which resulted in more prestigious national scholarship awards for Ohio University than any other institution in the state. During his final three years at Ohio, Glidden led a successful $200 million campaign to commemorate the bicentennial of the university.

Prior to his presidency at Ohio, Glidden served as a professor and Dean of the School of Music (1979-91) at Florida State University, as well as the Vice President for Academic Affairs (1991-94). During his career, Glidden has been a member of the faculties at Wright State University, Indiana and Oklahoma as well as serving as the Dean of Music at Bowling Green in the late 1970s. From 1972-75, Glidden also served as the Executive Director of the National Association of Schools of Music and National Association of Schools of Art in Washington.

During his presidency at Ohio, Glidden was a member of the Governor’s

Science and Technology Council and chaired the Ohio Aerospace Institute. He was Chair of the Mid-American Conference (athletics) and the Inter-University Council of Ohio, a member of the Board of Directors for Ohio Campus Compact and a member of the Ohio Higher Education Funding Commission from its inception in 1996 until his retirement in 2004. For the American Council on Education, he served as Chair of the Commission on Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness and on the Advisory Committee for the Center on Policy Analysis.

He also facilitated a series of presidential roundtables for ACE (2006-08). He was named Mentor of the Year in 2008 for the ACE Fellows Program and continues to work with that program as a mentor and leadership group facilitator.

Glidden has been President of both the National Association of Schools of Music and Pi Kappa Lambda (the national honor society in music) and Chairman of the Council on Postsecondary Accreditation. From 1996-98, he was Founding Chair of the Council on Higher Education Accreditation and served on the board until 2004. He continues to work on special projects for CHEA. Acting as a consultant or evaluator for more than 75 U.S. colleges and universities, Glidden has delivered papers on various aspects of American higher education in both Europe and Asia. He worked with the European University Association in 2004 to evaluate Irish national universities for the Irish University Quality Board (IUQB). He continues on the registry of institutional reviewers for IUQB and chaired a review team during the spring of 2010. He currently serves as a member of the Accreditation Committee for the American Bar Association and works with the TIAA-CREF Institute in planning the organization’s annual Higher Education Leadership Conferences.

A native of Iowa, Glidden earned a B.A. in music from the University of Iowa in 1958, an M.A. in 1960 and a Ph.D. in 1966.

DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS ALISON E. CONE lison E. Cone was named as Cal Poly’s Director CAL POLY ATHLETICS of Athletics on Jan. 31, 2005 following one year of service as the Interim Director of Athletics and 10 DIVISION I HONORS (1994-2010) years as the Senior Associate Athletics Director. Of the

more than 300 colleges and universities that support men’s basketball at the Division I level, Cone is one of just a handful of female athletics directors. At Cal Poly, Cone oversees 20 Division I programs and more than 400 student-athletes. In five years under Cone’s direction, Cal Poly’s athletics programs have captured 13 different conference titles and made 12 team NCAA Tournament showings.

Since arriving at Cal Poly in 1994 and prior to taking the Director of Athletics position, Cone oversaw the department’s NCAA compliance and academic support programs and served as department liaison for NCAA certification. She also served as a member of the department’s management team, administering Cal Poly’s letter-of-intent program and athletics scholarship budgets.

Currently, Cone serves on the Big West Conference Council and the Directors Council of the Great West Conference.

Cone, who at one time served as chair of the Big West Compliance Committee, worked for the passage of a fee referendum to fund athletics scholarships during her year as Interim Director of Athletics.

Cone arrived at Cal Poly from Washington State University, where she served as the Director of Athletics Academic Services between 1992-94.

Her duties with Washington State’s athletics programs included the governance of academic support programs for student-athletes. She directed and supervised the activities of the athletics department counselors, interns, tutors and proctors.

Prior to working at Washington State, Cone was the Academic Coordinator at Cal State Fullerton between 1983-92 and the Director for Student Services at Cal State Dominguez Hills between 1982-83.

Cone earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Washington State in 1975, a teaching certificate from Central Washington University one year later and a master’s degree in education from Cal State Dominguez Hills in 1982.

Cone has been coaching and teaching since 1975, having handled tennis, track, soccer and basketball at the high school level, basketball and volleyball at Green River Community College in Auburn, Wash., and serving as the head tennis coach at Cal State Dominguez Hills.

Cone is a native of Ellensburg, Washington.

MUSTANGS EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM or more than 100 years, Cal Poly’s student-athletes have been dedicated to excellence in both the athletic and academic arenas. During the 2009-10 scholastic year alone, 38 Mustangs were named to all-conference academic teams. Since Cal Poly transitioned to the Division I level in 1994, the school has enjoyed 520 total all-conference academic selections – an average of more than 32 per year.

Taking pride in each student’s ability to excel both athletically and intellectually, Cal Poly and the athletics department offer guidance and support to each student-athlete during his or her tenure. To support these motives, the athletics department initiated the Academic Resource Center. Opened in 2001, the cen-

ter provides year-round academic support, tutoring, workshops and academic advising. The center has also developed study hall programs with bi-quarterly progress checks, weekly academic appointments and a first-year seminar class for incoming student-athletes.

In deference to the student-athlete’s need for class schedule flexibility, Cal Poly also offers in-season priority registration for two of the three quarters during which competition occurs.

Featuring 20 varsity programs, the Cal Poly Athletics Department is in its 17th year of NCAA Division I competition since completing reclassification in 1994. With the exception of football (Great West Conference), wrestling and men’s swimming (Pac-10 Conference) and the women’s swimming and indoor track and field programs (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), Cal Poly is also in its 15th year as a member of the Big West Conference. Among Big West institutions, only UC Davis (23 programs) boasts more athletic disciplines than Cal Poly.

Prior to transitioning to the Division I level, Cal Poly ranked as the most successful institution in the history of NCAA Division II athletics with 35 national team titles.

Cal Poly has continued its winning tradition at the top flight with teams and individuals routinely earning conference championships and NCAA Tournament berths.

During the 2009-10 academic year, Cal Poly’s women’s soccer, men’s cross country and men’s tennis programs all captured conference titles while the Mustang Athletics Department finished second in the Big West Commissioner’s Cup, an award presented to the institution with the best overall results in the conference's 18 sponsored sports.

Individually during the 2009-10 academic term, wrestlers Chase Pami (157 pounds) and Boris Novachkov (133 pounds) earned All-America praise after finishing, respectively, second and seventh at the 2010 NCAA Championships. Wrestlers Filip Novachkov (141 pounds), Nick Fisher (149 pounds) and Ryan DesRoches (174 pounds), swimmer Peter Kline, high jumper Whitney Sisler and the women’s tennis doubles team of Brittany Blalock and Suzie Matzenauer all advanced to the NCAA Championships.

Cross country runner Joe Gatel also earned an NCAA Championships berth and was named Big West Athlete of the Year after winning the conference’s individual title.

Other Big West Player of Year recipients included women’s basketball forward Kristina Santiago and softball designated player Anna Cahn.

Cal Poly student-athletes produced 42 all-conference honors during the 2009-10 academic year while seven Mustangs – Jordan Bridge (men’s tennis), Mitch Haniger (baseball), Angie Haven (women’s swimming), Taylor Herrera (men’s track and field), Pace Johnson (men’s golf), Dave LaFlamme (men’s swimming) and Kayleigh Tyerman (women’s cross country) – earned Big West Freshman of the Year praise. In testament to Cal Poly’s academic integrity, 38 Mustangs collected Big West All-Academic praise.

Cal Poly athletes have consistently excelled outside the bounds of the collegiate arena. Cal Poly was represented at the 2008 Summer Olympics by former Mustangs Sharon Day (United States, high jump), Jimmy Van Ostrand (Canada, baseball) and Stephanie Brown Trafton, whose gold medal for the United States in the discus competition was the first such feat by a Mustang athlete. Other prominent post-Cal Poly examples include All-American wide receiver Ramses Barden (2005-08), who was a third-round selection by the New York Giants in 2009. Former linebacker Chris Gocong (2002-05) – one of Cal Poly’s three Buck Buchanan Award winners as the Football Championship Subdivision’s top defensive player – made 35 starts in three active seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before signing with the Cleveland Browns in 2010. As a member of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, former men’s soccer midfielder Anton Peterlin is the only Big West player to have appeared in an English Football League match. As of August 2010, the Cal Poly baseball program had produced three current Major League players while 18 former Mustangs were active in the minors.

Completed in 2006, Alex G. Spanos Stadium (above) hosts Cal Poly’s football and men’s and women’s soccer programs. The Mustang football team christened the complex on Nov. 18, 2006 with a 55-0 victory versus Savannah State, while a program-record 11,075 spectators packed Spanos Stadium Sept. 15, 2007 for Cal Poly’s season home-opening win against Weber State.

On Oct. 17, 2008, another sellout crowd of 11,075 supporters – the thirdlargest regular season crowd figure in NCAA men’s soccer history – flooded Spanos Stadium for Cal Poly’s nationally-televised showdown against central coast rival UC Santa Barbara. During the 2009 season, the men’s soccer program ranked third among NCAA Division I programs by averaging 2,213 fans per home date.

Cal Poly’s volleyball, wrestling and basketball programs call 3,032-seat Mott Gym (right) home. The athletics department ensured its commitment to Cal Poly’s programs by installing a new $700,000 floor during the summer of 2007.

During recent years, Mott Gym has hosted the Pac-10 Conference Wrestling Championships and, in front of a sold-out audience, the first and seconds rounds of the 2006 NCAA Volleyball Tournament (also right). The men’s basketball program produced its most recent sellout during a 60-57 defeat of eventual Big West champion UC Santa Barbara on Feb. 27, 2010. Additionally, the Mustang women’s basketball program drew a program-record 1,737 fans for a Feb. 14, 2009 game against UC Santa Barbara.

Remodeled at a cost of more than $3 million, the Olympic-sized Anderson Aquatic Center (left) was completed in August 2009 and plays host to both Cal Poly’s men’s and women’s swimming and diving programs.

Situated adjacent to Mott Gym, the pool measures 12,348 square feet.

Eight 50-yard lanes highlight the complex, which also provides for a total of eighteen 25-yard cross course lanes. The complex also features a 15-by-30-foot all-shallow therapy pool. Anderson Aquatic Center held its first official event on Oct. 3, 2009, when the Mustang women’s swimming program welcomed then-defending national champion California to San Luis Obispo.

ADDITIONAL CAL POLY ATHLETICS FACILITY HIGHLIGHTS • With a picturesque mountain backdrop ringing the landscape, Ozzie Smith Plaza was completed in 2001 and plays host to the Bob Janssen Field softball and Baggett Stadium baseball venues. The Mustang baseball team regularly draws four-figure attendances and hosts nationally ranked competition. The Mustang softball program, which clinched its first Big West title in 2007 at Janssen Field, drew an overflow, program-record 1,532 fans for a 2007 doubleheader against perennial national powerhouse UCLA. Both venues feature spacious clubhouses, as well as batting cages and bullpen areas for both teams.

• Cal Poly finished resurfacing an on-campus all-weather track in 2001 and completed improvements to the high jump and pole vault areas. The track and field program hosts its annual Cal Poly Invitational each March.

• Cal Poly broke ground on the Sports Complex in 1999, which, in addition to Baggett Stadium and Bob Janssen Field, features six multi-purpose fields for use by the school’s intercollegiate and club teams, as well as intramural programs.

Bermuda and paspalum grasses, is located near the Ornamental Horticulture facility. A swing lab, located in Mott Gym, was completed in 2003 and utilizes computer equipment to analyze a golfer's swing.

• During the 2008-09 academic year, Cal Poly finished construction on the FieldTurf Upper Field, located above Ozzie Smith Plaza. The area is used by Cal Poly’s athletics programs and intramural leagues.

• The Mustang men’s golf program hosts the Firestone Grill Intercollegiate and the women’s team hosts the Lamkin Grip Cup Invitational at Cypress Ridge Golf Course in nearby Arroyo Grande. The course was recently rated four-and-ahalf stars by Golf Digest magazine. Cal Poly, also hosted the 2009 Big West Conference championships at the exclusive San Luis Obispo Country Club.

• Cal Poly opened Mustang Courts in 2001. The seven-court complex is located behind Mott Gym, features permanent chairback seating and is used by both the men’s and women’s tennis programs.

Endless hiking and biking trails along pristine lakes and mountains provide the perfect training for outdoor enthusiasts. Surfers flock to the 80 miles of continuous coastline in San Luis Obispo County.
