When referring to the university, please use “Cal Poly” only. We are NOT Cal Poly SLO or Cal Poly San Luis Obispo or Cal State Poly or any other derivative -- just Cal Poly. No hyphen. The NCAA agreed to delete “SLO” and “San Luis Obispo” in 1994 and has used just Cal Poly in all statistics, releases and record books since then.

2011-12 Coaching Staff Brendan Buckley, Head Coach, First Season Brendan Buckley, head wrestling coach at Ivy League member Columbia University in New York for the last 11 seasons, was named Cal Poly’s head wrestling coach on June 21, 2011.

“Brendan has an excellent record in developing student-athletes,” said Mustang director of athletics Don Oberhelman. “Brendan has demonstrated that he knows how to fulfill his first responsibility as a coach, which is to make sure we honor our commitment to our student-athletes’ academic achievement. We’ve hired the right coach to ensure we continue to honor those ideals.

“Brendan also believes, as I do, that all of our student-athletes should strive to leave Cal Poly with a diploma and a championship,” Oberhelman added.

“I’m very excited about what he will accomplish at Cal Poly.”

Presented by the National Wrestling Coaches Association the award recog- NCAA qualifiers and the program's first All-American in 23 years. Matt nizes an outstanding coach who epitomizes the qualities and characteristics Palmer finished eighth in the 2005 and 2007 NCAA Championships at 165 and 174 pounds, respectively. In the 2008-09 season, Buckley coached of a role model and mentor for developing young student-athletes.

Last year, Buckley led the Lions to a 9-6 overall record and a third-place Columbia's first EIWA champion in 13 years.

Buckley was named EIWA Coach of the Year as he led the Lions to a finish in the Ivy League. The team placed seventh overall at the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association (EIWA) Championships in March and fourth-place finish at the 2005 EIWA Championships, the team’s best finish two wrestlers advanced to the round of 16 at the NCAA Division I National at the meet since 1931. The Lions also won the EIWA Wrestling Officials Sportsmanship Award.

2011-12 Coaching Staff Jamill Kelly, Assistant Coach, First Season Jamill Kelly, silver medalist in the 2004 Summer Olympics, is in his first season as an assistant wrestling coach at Cal Poly.

Kelly was a two-time NCAA qualifier wrestling for Oklahoma State and lettered twice in the sport after attending Lassen Community College for one year. He is a graduate of Atwater High School near Merced.

“I am thrilled to begin working with an Olympic silver medalist like Kelly,” said head coach Brendan Buckley. “It was important that we hire someone with California roots, a strong freestyle wrestling background, and someone that cannot only teach the sport but also serve as a terrific role model to our student-athletes.

“On all accounts, Jamill excels and I truly believe we hit a grand slam with his hiring,” Buckley added. “This was our first step in the next era of Cal Poly wrestling and I am excited to begin working with Jamill.”

Kelly was a silver medalist at 66 kilograms/145.5 pounds in freestyle wrestling at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens, Greece, and was a member of the 2005 U.S. Freestyle World Team.

Other accomplishments on the mat include a pair of USA Senior national titles, 2003 Pan Am Games silver medalist and 2001 Pan Am Championships silver medalist. He was a 2004 U.S. Nationals champion, placed second at the 2002 U.S. Nationals and third at the 2001 U.S. Nationals.

Kelly also was a member of Freestyle Team USA four times and was a 2001 University Nationals champion. He was a U.S. Olympic Trials champion in 2004 and a member of the 2003 World Team.

Kelly was Big 12 Conference runnerup in 2000 at Oklahoma State, a twoyear Cowboy starter and a team captain.

Prior to joining the OSU program, Kelly attended Lassen College, where he was second at the 1996 NJCAA Junior College Nationals. He was fourth in the 1995 California high school state championships, competing for Atwater High School.

Following his competition days, Kelly has served as U.S. Junior World Freestyle Team coach, which competed in Beijing, China, in 2007; coached a U.S. freestyle tour team that competed in Krasnoyarsk, Russia, in 2006; and assisted with the coaching of junior-level teams while working in Massachusetts.

He also served a year as head assistant wrestling coach at Harvard and most recently was head coach of Dallas Dynamite Wrestling Club in Texas.

Kelly was a coach of the Cowboy Wrestling Club in Stillwater, Okla. from 2001-06, developing the club in the community and coaching over 100 area youth athletes. He also was a part of the coaching staff at Oklahoma State as an administrative assistant as well as assisting with the development of numerous All-American wrestlers there during his tenure.

Mitch Monteiro, Assistant Coach, First Season Mitch Monteiro, a Paso Robles High School graduate and threetime NCAA Division I national qualifier while wrestling at Cal State Bakersfield, was added to Brendan Buckley's coaching staff at Cal Poly in November 2011.

Monteiro earned NCAA All-American honors with a fifth-place finish at 285 pounds in the 2010 NCAA Championships en route to a 21-7 record as a senior with the Roadrunners.

He also qualified for the nationals in 2008, posting a 3-3 mark as a sophomore after transferring from Cuesta College, and in 2009 when he compiled a 29-8 record as a junior.

"We are very pleased to announce the hiring of Mitch Monteiro, a local product an a former NCAA All-American," said Buckley. "It can be difficult to find quality coaches that wrestled heavyweight and yet are agile and light enough to work with 184- and 197-pounders and we did just that.

"Mitch having wrestled at Paso Robles High School will also present us with the opportunity to strengthen our ties to the local wrestling community, something that is very important to us," Buckley added.

Monteiro attended Cal Poly from 2005-06 and was a member of the Mustang wrestling team, but had his season cut short due to an injury.

He attended Cuesta College during the 2006-07 season, but that same

injury kept him from competing as well.

Monteiro placed second in the Pacific-10 Conference Championships as a sophomore at Cal State Bakersfield and captured conference titles in both 2009 and 2010. He was named the Roadrunners' Male Athlete of the Year in 2010.

At Paso Robles High School, Monteiro claimed four league championships as well as three CIF-Southern Section individual titles. He was a twotime CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet placewinner with a first and a third, and twice qualified for the state finals, finishing second and third.

Monteiro is two courses shy of completing degree requirements in criminal justice at Cal State Bakersfield. He has been working as a line counselor at Aarons Boys Home in Atascadero since February, providing supervision, guidance and counseling to at-risk youth and juvenile delinquents.

Monteiro will coach wrestlers in the upper weights.

Mustang Runners-Up at NCAA Championships Chad Mendes, 2008 Chad Mendes completed one of the most storied seasons by a Cal Poly wrestler in the program’s history in 2008, tallying a 30-0 record before dropping a 5-2 decision to Ohio State’s J Jaggers in the NCAA Championship bout at 141 pounds.

Mendes will be remembered as one of the all-time greats to walk the halls of Mott Gym. The Hanford, Calif. native recorded seven falls, eight major decisions and one technical fall in 2008. He pinned Paul Moseman of Cal State Bakersfield in just 13 seconds on Nov. 18 at the Fullerton Open and wooed a large crowd at Cal Poly by pinning the then-No. 2 ranked 141-pounder in the nation, Minnesota’s Manuel Rivera, in 1 minute, 34 seconds. At the NCAA Championships, Mendes won his first match by fall in just 34 seconds.

Among his many accomplishments, Mendes won a Pac-12 title in 2008 and was also named the conference’s Wrestler of the Year. He also won tournament titles at the Michigan State Open and Fullerton Open and became the eighth wrestler in program history to navigate an undefeated dual slate.

Mendes finished his career with an impressive 64-

14 record. He was an All-American at 125 pounds with a sixth-place finish in 2006 before bulking up to 141 for his senior year in the 2007-08 season.

On Jan. 15, 2008, Mendes became the first Cal Poly wrestler to earn a No. 1 ranking by pollsters since Scott Heaton and Rick Worel did so together in 1980.

After graduating from Cal Poly in the spring of 2008, Mendes embarked upon a professional fighting career with the Palace Fighting Championship circuit. After winning all five fights, he signed with the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting) in October 2009, posting a 4-0 mark before the WEC merged with the Ultimate Fighting Championship in 2010.

Mendes is 2-0 in the UFC, 11-0 overall, and is expected to face UFC featherweight champion Jose Aldo on January 14, 2012, at UFC 142.

His favorite technique is the wushu finger hold.

“It’s a great opportunity and a great honor to be competing in the UFC,” said Mendes. “This is where I’ve always wanted to fight and it’s awesome to be a part of such a huge organization.”

Chase Pami, 2010 Cal Poly’s Chase Pami became the sixth NCAA Division I runner-up in Mustang wrestling history in March 2010.

Trying to become the third Division I national champion, Pami led 2-1 early in the first period, but eventually fell 6-4 to top-seeded and four-time NCAA All-American J.P. O'Connor of Harvard in the 157-pound final at the Qwest Center Omaha.

Pami closed out his Cal Poly career with a 29-7 record as a senior and a 100-35 career mark.

Pami, the lowest seeded wrestler in the championship finals, tried to become the first Cal Poly wrestler in 34 years to capture a Division I national title. Tom Kline won in 1969 and Mark DiGirolamo accomplished the feat in 1976.

Pami earned his 100th career win in the semifinals with a 13-5 major decision against Justin Lister of Binghamton.

Pami placed seventh in the 2009 NCAA meet.

Pami also joins Kline (1968), John Woods (1969), Cliff Hatch (1975), Montano (1983) and Chad Mendes (2008) as the only Mustangs to earn sec-

ond-place finishes at the Division I nationals.

Pami captured back-to-back Pac-12 Conference titles at 157 pounds in 2008 and 2009. Only other Mustangs to claim consecutive Pac-10 championships are Eric Osborne (1987-88), Jake Gaeir (1993-94) and Boris Novachkov (2010-11).

Pami was an NCAA qualifier all four seasons at Cal Poly. He finished 27-9 as a junior, 24-6 as a sophomore and 20-13 as a freshman.

He was a two-time Nevada state champion and four-time high school All-American while wrestling at Cimarron Memorial High School in Las Vegas. He was 185-14 in his prep career.

In early December, Pami qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, scheduled for April 21-22, 2012, at Carver-Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.

Pami earned his spot in the field based upon results at the Men's Freestyle Olympic Trials Qualifier, held in Las Vegas, Nev. Pami currently is training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.,

Boris Novachkov, 2011 In 2011, for the third time in four years, a Cal Poly wrestler captured second place in the NCAA Division I National Championships.

At Philadelphia, junior Boris Novachkov, seeded third, won four matches to reach the 141-pound final, but for the second time in the 2010-11 season, he dropped a 3-2 decision to Kellen Russell of Michigan. Those were Novachkov’s only losses against 31 victories that season.

Novachkov, who placed seventh at 133 pounds and earned NCAA All-American honors a year earlier, earned a 6-1 decision over Buffalo sophomore Andrew Schutt, followed by a 4-2 decision over Matthew Bonson of Lock Haven on the first day of competition at the nationals.

The next day, he shut out No. 6 Andrew Alton of Penn State 2-0 in the quarterfinals and earned a 9-3

victory over second-seeded Michael Thorn of Minnesota in the semifinals.

A three-time national qualifier and two-time Pac12 champion, Novachkov owns an 87-19 career record at Cal Poly entering his senior season.

A graduate of Fremont High School in Sunnyvale, Novachkov went 4-2 in the 2010 nationals, with both losses decided in overtime. Prior to the 2011 nationals, he won the Fullerton Open as well as the Midlands and placed second at the Las Vegas Invitational.

Four of his wins in the 2010-11 season were by fall and Novachkov also won four matches by technical fall and five by major decision. He posted a spotless 11-0 record in dual meets with two pins and a pair of technical falls and was 10-2 against nationally ranked wrestlers.

Mustangs Return to National Polls After an absence of a few years, the Cal Poly wrestling team is back in the national rankings.

The Mustangs were ranked anywhere from No. 15 to 25 most of the 2009-10 season and finished tied for 18th in the NCAA National Championships.

Cal Poly also was ranked every week in the 2010-11 campaign and finished 32nd at the NCAAs. The Mustangs opened the 201112 season with a No. 23 national ranking.

New head coach Brendan Buckley guided the Mustangs to to an early No. 15 ranking in WIN Magazine's Tournament Power Index, a measure of how a team will do in tournament competition.

Individually, two-time NCAA All-American Boris Novachkov, 174-pound senior Ryan DesRoches and 197-pound senior Ryan Smith received the highest preseason rankings.

Novachkov, second in the NCAA Championships a year ago and seventh in 2010, was ranked as high as No. 2 by the various publications in the preseason while DesRoches, a two-time NCAA qualifier, was ranked No. 15 and Smith No. 13.

Mustang 285-pounder Atticus Disney, 165pounder Steven Vasquez and 133-pounder Brandan Rocha also are receiving votes in the national rankings.

Steven Vasquez posted a 16-16 win-loss record as a sophomore a year ago.

Former Mustang Lou Montano to be Inducted Former Cal Poly wrestler Lou Montano is among nine inductees for the Class of 2012 into the California Wrestling Hall of Fame.

The induction ceremony will be held May 12, 2012, at the Bakersfield Marriott, located adjacent to the Bakersfield Convention Center.

Montano compiled a four year record of 112-16-1 at Cal Poly, setting a record for the most average wins per season. He was twice an NCAA Division I AllAmerican, placing second at 158 pounds as a senior in 1983 with a record of 41-2-1. He also placed eighth in 1982, also at 158 pounds.

Montano's coaching career began at Cal Poly as an assistant coach for three seasons (1984-86). He then

moved to Cal State Bakersfield, where he was an assistant for five seasons (1987-91). He became the head coach at Columbia University for the next nine seasons (1992-2000).

Montano was a three-sport athlete for Calexico High School, competing in wrestling, football and baseball. He played quarterback on the football team and was selected MVP in the Desert Valley League. In wrestling, Montano placed third in the California High School State Wrestling Championships in 1978.

Montano, currently testing director at Cal State Bakersfield, has also served wrestling for many years as an wrestling skills technician, making presentations throughout the nation at major camps and clinics.

2010-11 Season in Review Mustangs Rebound With Strong Performances Two years ago, Cal Poly went 3-12 in dual meets, including an 0-8 mark in Pac-12 Conference duals.

The tide has turned, with the Mustangs rebounding in the 200910 campaign with an 8-4 dual meet record (5-2 in Pac-12 matches), snapping a string of three consecutive losing dual meet seasons, and following that with a 9-2 overall mark in the 2010-11 campaign (4-2 in Pac-12 duals).

Cal Poly also produced NCAA All-Americans both years.

In 2009-10, Cal Poly sent five wrestlers to the NCAA Championships and two captured All-American honors -- Chase Pami finished second at 157 pounds and Boris Novachkov was seventh at 133 pounds.

Last March, four more Mustangs qualified for the NCAA Championships and Novachkov came home with another AllAmerican certificate, finishing second at 141 pounds.

Cal Poly has produced at least a semifinalist in the NCAA Championships four of the last five seasons and three earned second-place finishes -- Chad Mendes at 141 pounds in 2008, Pami at 157 in 2010 and Novachkov at 141 in 2011.

The Mustangs opened the season with wins in their first six duals, including a thrilling 18-16 verdict against No. 24 Wyoming before 881 fans in Mott Gym. Cal Poly scored three major decisions while Wyoming produced just one -- the two extra bonus points providing the margin of victory in the dual meet. Atticus Disney at 285 -- the opening bout -- along with Novachkov at 141 and Barrett Abel at 157 all won by major decision as the Mustangs built a 12-9 lead in the first six bouts.

Wyoming 165-pounder Shane Onufer, ranked No. 6 in the nation by InterMat, improved to 18-0 on the year with a 5-4 decision, tying the dual meet at 12-12, but unranked Cal Poly won two of the final three bouts to earn the team victory. Steven Vasquez edged Patrick Martinez 3-2 at 174 and, after Wyoming took a 16-15 lead with No. 6 Joe LeBlanc's 14-4 major decision over Kelan Bragg at 184, Mustang 197-pounder Ryan Smith clinched the dual meet with a 10-8 decision over L.J. Helbig.

One week later in Corvallis, Oregon, Cal Poly snapped an 18-match losing streak against Oregon State with an 18-15 victory, capturing wins in six of the 10 bouts for its first win over the Beavers since 1989.

Feature matches in that dual were at 141 and 285 pounds. At 141, Novachkov earned 1:30 of riding time for a 3-2 decision against Mike Mangrum while Disney was a 12-6 winner over Oregon State's Clayton Jack at 285.

The six-match winning streak came to a halt two days later as Boise State, which was ranked No. 3 at the time and went on to capture the Pacific-12 Conference team championship, defeated the Mustangs 29-6 in Boise.

Cal Poly won three of its final four duals, including a surprisingly easy 40-11 triumph over No. 15 Arizona State in Tempe. The loss was at Stanford, 21-15.

In tournament action, Novachkov and Ryan DesRoches captured individual titles and four other Cal Poly wrestlers earned second or third place in the non-scoring Fullerton Open.

Claiming second place for Cal Poly were 133-pounder Brandan Rocha and 157-pounder Barrett Abel while Juan Delgado (125) and Geoffrey Doss (149) both finished third.

In the Reno Tournament of Champions, DesRoches placed second at 165 for the second straight year while Ryan Smith was fifth at 197. Boris Novachkov did not compete in last year’s tournament.

The Mustangs competed in the Midlands Open at Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill., and placed 11th. Novachkov captured the 141-pound championship, becoming Cal Poly’s first Midlands champion, while his brother, senior Filip Novachkov, settled for fourth place at 133 pounds.

At the non-scoring All-California Open hosted by San Francisco State, four Mustangs captured individual titles -- Abel claimed the 157-pound title, Filip Novachkov captured the 149-pound crown, Steven Vasquez took the 174-pound class and Smith topped the podium at 197. Dominic Kastl claimed second place at 174, Drew Meulman was third at 285 and both Pearce Swerdfeger (157) and Kelan Bragg (184) finished fourth.

DesRoches, now a senior, was 33-8 as a junior while Abel posted a 30-11 mark in his lone season with the Mustangs.

Three other Mustangs placed third, all beating Stanford wrestlers in the consolation finals. At 149, Filip Novachkov was a 9-3 winner over Timmy Boone, while Barrett Abel, the Pac-12 champion at 149 pounds in 2010 while wrestling for UC Davis, earned a 10-5 win over Kyle Meyer in the 157-pound consolation finals. DesRoches defeated Lucas Espericueta 5-4 in the consolation final to secure third place at 165.

Rocha placed fourth at 133 while Smith was fifth at 197 and Vasquez sixth at 174.

Cal Poly wrestling, presented by Meathead Movers, qualified four wrestlers for the 2011 NCAA Championship in Philadelphia, Penn., and for the third time in four years, a Cal Poly wrestler captured second place.

Boris Novachkov, seeded third, won four matches to reach the 141pound final, but for the second time in the 2010-11 season, he dropped a 3-2 decision to Kellen Russell of Michigan. Those were Novachkov’s only losses against 31 victories last season.

Novachkov, who placed seventh at 133 pounds and earned NCAA AllAmerican honors a year earlier, earned a 6-1 decision over Buffalo sophomore Andrew Schutt, followed by a 4-2 decision over Matthew Bonson of Lock Haven on the first day of competition at the nationals.

The next day, he shut out No. 6 Andrew Alton of Penn State 2-0 in the quarterfinals and earned a 9-3 victory over second-seeded Michael Thorn of Minnesota in the semifinals.

A three-time national qualifier and two-time Pac-12 champ, Novachkov owns an 87-19 career record at Cal Poly entering his senior season.

Abel qualified through the Pac-12 Championships while DesRoches and Smith were selected as at-large entries for the nationals.

All three lost their opening-round matches and also were eliminated in the first round of wrestleback matches.

Trailing 10-5, Abel was pinned by Johnny Greisheimer of Edinboro in 5 minutes, 30 seconds. Abel then was eliminated by Kyle John of Maryland 7-1. Abel finished the year 30-11.

DesRoches dropped a 4-1 decision to second-seeded Andrew Howe of Wisconsin, followed by an 8-6 loss to John-Martin Cannon of Buffalo.

DesRoches posted a 33-8 record for the season.

Smith fell 6-2 to top-seeded Cam Simaz of Cornell in the opening round, then was pinned by Zachary Bennett of North Carolina in 2:32, closing out a 22-11 junior season.

As a team, Cal Poly placed 32nd at the nationals.

Iceman: My Fighting Life

Chuck ‘The Iceman’ Liddell Cal Poly 1988-93

C

huck Liddell ranks as one of, if not the, most famous Cal Poly graduates in the school’s history. For two years Chuck “The Iceman” Liddell reigned as the UFC light heavyweight champion, but before that, Liddell starred in Mott Gym as a 190-pound wrestler.

Recently, Liddell released a book that chronicles his life as a fighter. Iceman: My Fighting Life debuted on February 17, 2008, and spent multiple weeks on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Liddell started training for his career at the age of 12 in Santa Barbara. He was a four-year starter on the football team at San Marcos High School, and became a Division I wrestler at Cal Poly in 1988. After spending five years on the wrestling squad, Liddell would complete his degree while pursuing a career as a professional fighter, graduating in 1995 with a B.A.in business. As a graduation gift to himself, he had his iconic tattoo inked on his scalp which reads “Koei-Kan” (“prosper with happiness.”) He would then transition to mixed martial artist when he earned a purple belt in Brazilian jiu-jitsu under John Lewis, ultimately aiming for a career that would take his fame and fortune to a new level.

Liddell made his UFC debut in 1998 with a decision victory over Noe Hernandez. He soon established his reputation as a devastating striker with victories over Tito Ortiz, Renato Sobral and Wanderlei Silva over the next few years. On May 26, 2004, he knocked out Randy Couture in two minutes to

win the Light Heavyweight Title. He defended his titles successfully five times, all ending with either a knockout or a TKO. He surrendered his belt after losing in a matchup with Quinton “Rampage” Jackson, three years to the day of being crowned champion.

Despite his busy schedule as a fighter and a world-renowned celebrity, Liddell still takes time to remember his roots as a Cal Poly Mustang.

Liddell can often be seen matside at Cal Poly matches and is an avid fan of the team. He was inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame on Sept. 11, 2009.

MUSTANGS EXCEL IN THE CLASSROOM or more than 100 years, Cal Poly’s student-athletes have been dedicated to excellence in both the athletic and academic arenas. During the 2010-11 scholastic year alone, 56 Mustangs were named to all-conference academic teams.

Since Cal Poly transitioned to the Division I level in 1994, the school has enjoyed 576 total all-conference academic selections – an average of more than 34 per year.

Taking pride in each student’s ability to excel both athletically and intellectually, Cal Poly and the athletics department offer guidance and support to each student-athlete during his or her tenure. To support these motives, the athletics department initiated the Academic Resource Center.

Opened in 2001, the center provides yearround academic support, tutoring, workshops and academic advising. The center has also developed study hall programs with bi-quarterly progress checks, weekly academic appointments and a first-year seminar class for incoming student-athletes.

In deference to the student-athlete’s need for class schedule flexibility, Cal Poly also offers in-season priority registration for two of the three quarters during which competition occurs.

Of the 64 major courses offered at Cal Poly, Mustang student-athletes were enrolled in 54 separate areas, as of the Fall 2009 term.

ATHLETIC EXCELLENCE Featuring 20 varsity programs, the Cal Poly Athletics Department is in its 18th year of NCAA Division I competition since completing reclassification in 1994. With the exception of football (Great West Conference), wrestling and men’s swimming (Pac-10 Conference) and the women’s swimming and indoor track and field programs (Mountain Pacific Sports Federation), Cal Poly is also in its 16th year as a member of the Big West Conference.

Among Big West institutions, only UC Davis (22 programs) boasts more athletic disciplines than Cal Poly.

Prior to transitioning to the Division I level, Cal Poly ranked as the most successful institution in the history of NCAA Division II athletics with 35 national team titles. Cal Poly has continued its winning tradition at the top flight with teams and individuals routinely earning conference championships and NCAA Tournament berths.

During the 2010-11 academic year, the athletics department saw both the men’s and women’s tennis programs advance to the NCAA Championships.

Individually, Jen Keddy (volleyball), Asa Jackson (football), Boris Novachkov (wrestling) and Jasmine Pickett (track and field) each earned All-America honors. At the NCAA Championships, Novachkov finished as runner-up at 141 pounds while Pickett finished seventh in the triple jump. Peter Kline qualified for three events in NCAA swimming and diving, the men's tennis doubles team of Andre Dome and Alex Sonesson qualified for NCAA competition and Geoff Gonzalez became Cal Poly's first Division I national qualifier in men's golf. Maliik Love (men's basketball), Chris Frias (men's cross country) and Kristina Graven (volleyball) each earned Big West Freshman Player of the Year honors, Rachel Clancy was named Big West Player of the Year in women's basketball and Marty Mohamed earned Great West Defensive Player of the Year honors in football.

As testament to Cal Poly’s athletic and academic integrity, 56 Mustangs were named to all-conference academic teams during the 2010-11 school year. The Cal Poly Athletics Department also finished second in the Big West Commissioner’s Cup, an award presented to the institution with the best overall results in the conference’s 16 sponsored sports.

Cal Poly athletes have consistently excelled outside the bounds of the collegiate arena. Cal Poly was represented at the 2008 Summer Olympics by former Mustangs Sharon Day (United States, high jump), Jimmy Van Ostrand (Canada, baseball) and Stephanie Brown Trafton, whose gold medal for the United States in the discus competition was the first such feat by a Mustang athlete. Other prominent post-Cal Poly examples include All-American wide receiver Ramses Barden (2005-08), who was a thirdround selection by the New York Giants in 2009.

Former linebacker Chris Gocong (2002-05) – one of Cal Poly’s three Buck Buchanan Award winners as the Football Championship Subdivision’s top defensive player – made 35 starts in three active seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles before signing with the Cleveland Browns in 2010. As a member of Plymouth Argyle Football Club, former men’s soccer midfielder Anton Peterlin is the only Big West player to have appeared in an English Football League match. As of August 2010, the Cal Poly baseball program had produced three current Major League players while 22 other Mustangs were active professionally.

Endless hiking and biking trails along pristine lakes and mountains provide the perfect training for outdoor enthusiasts. Surfers flock to the 80 miles of continuous coastline in San Luis Obispo County. Outdoor Magazine recently tabbed San Luis Obispo as one of the best places to live with a year-round climate that features an average of 315 days of sunshine per year and a median temperature of 70 degrees.

• Hearst Castle, William Randolph Hearst s elaborate summer home, is located 45 miles north along the coast in San Simeon.

Three golf courses reside in San Luis Obispo with 12 additional sites located within 28 miles of downtown. Located along U.S. Highway 101, San Luis Obispo is roughly halfway between San Francisco and Los Angeles. The city features a regional airport serviced by two carriers with
