THE MUSTANGS PAUL
CAL POLY
MEN’S SOCCER
HOLOCHER
HEAD COACH Sixth Season • Santa Clara, 1991
45-35-19 Cal Poly • 154-59-26 Overall n his five years as head coach of the Cal Poly men’s soccer team, Paul Holocher has transformed the Mustangs into a nationally recognized and prominent program. During his 12 overall seasons as a head coach, Holocher has compiled an impressive 154-59-26 record and led his programs to six total NCAA Tournament appearances. Included in that run is an NCAA Division III Tournament championship game showing with UC Santa Cruz and an NCAA Division I Tournament appearance with Cal Poly during the 2008 season – the Mustang program’s first postseason showing in 13 years (Cal Poly defeated UCLA before falling in the second round). During his five seasons inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium, Holocher has directed Cal Poly to a 25-5-6 home record and helped create one of the most loyal and passionate college soccer fan bases in the country. Of equal note is the central coast’s significant jump in interest and fan support for the Cal Poly program. Under Holocher’s leadership, attendance has exploded at Spanos Stadium with the Mustangs regularly finishing among the nation’s top-10 programs. During the 2010 season alone, the Mustangs averaged more than 3,00 fans per home match. “One of my main goals when I came to Cal Poly was
I
to create an exciting and fun atmosphere for our community and youth to come and enjoy great college soccer,” Holocher said. “I feel we have some of the best college soccer fans in the country, both within our student body and the community, and the fan base is growing in passion each year. There are a lot of young families and more than 7,000 youth players on the central coast. We want each and every one of those young fans and families to know about Cal Poly soccer and for us to become a positive experience in their growth in the game.” Several of the highestattended matches in NCAA history have occurred at Spanos Stadium under Holocher, including two nationally-televised broadcasts on Fox Soccer Channel versus Big West rival UC Santa Barbara. The series versus UC Santa Barbara, which included a 2008 sellout that drew more than 11,000 spectators, has become the best attended and most hotlycontested rivalry in college soccer. In what has become a hallmark of Holocher’s tenure at Cal Poly, the Mustangs annually contest one of the nation’s most challenging schedules. In 2010 alone, Cal Poly’s schedule was rated the 15th-most difficult schedule out of more than 200 Division I programs. “The Big West is a fantastic conference with some great rivalries that are being developed,” Holocher said. “We also want to continually
play the best teams in the nation outside of our conference, challenge ourselves and create great competitive memories for the young men in our program and for our fans.” As an attacking midfielder in college, Holocher helped Santa Clara to a 1989 NCAA championship and 20-0-3 record under Steve Sampson and Mitch Murray. Holocher ended his career with selection to the NSCAA AllAmerica team and was a recipient of the Vincent Corsiglia academic award for high-achieving student-athletes at Santa Clara. His 28 collegiate goals and 32 assists remain the secondhighest marks in Santa Clara history. He was inducted into the Santa Clara Athletic Hall of Fame in 2005 along with other Bronco soccer alumni Eric Yamamoto and Brandi Chastain. Following his time at Santa Clara, Holocher helped the San Francisco Blackhawks to the 1991 American Professional Soccer League title before being signed by Admira Wacker of the Austrian Bundesliga. At 26, Holocher was the 43rd overall pick during the inaugural Major League Soccer Draft by San Jose Clash. Holocher, who also played for Chicago Fire, retired in 1999 to take his first head coaching position at UC Santa Cruz. With the UC Santa Cruz program, Holocher quickly transformed the Banana Slugs into a national power,

compiling a 109-24-19 record in seven years and putting the program one victory away from the 2004 national championship. Four players from his UC Santa Cruz program went on to play in MLS and several are now coaching in college soccer programs along the west coast, including San Francisco (Dan Chamberlain), UC Santa Diego (Eric Bucherre) and UC Santa Cruz (David Frank). Holocher’s penchant for developing players continued at Cal Poly with former Mustang captain Anton Peterlin signing for Everton Football Club of the English Premier League in 2008 (Peterlin currently plays for Walsall Football Club). Most recently, Efrain Burgos became the first Mustang taken in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft when picked 44th overall by Toronto FC in 2011. With Holocher’s first two recruiting classes coming into their senior seasons, a program record six Mustangs earned All-Big West praise in 2010. “We look for young men that want to be professionals in the sport and who are ambitious. We know that our goal of player development is always a high priority,” Holocher added. “We want to develop players that have a professional approach to how they play and live. Strong character, coachability and work ethic are keys to development and we look for young men that are ready to improve, compete and grow in the game each day. We want to help players to become confident, competitive and capable of playing an attacking and team-first style of soccer.” Cal Poly players have not only excelled on the field under Holocher’s guidance, but in the classroom, as well. In his five years at Cal Poly, two Mustangs have earned
Big West Scholar-Athlete praise: K.J. Lenehan (2007) and Wes Feighner (2010). Cal Poly’s team Academic Progress Report rating, a barometer of academic success and graduation rates, has risen drastically since Holocher’s arrival. “It is important for us to recruit young men who are also motivated academically. Cal Poly features an impressive academic education with a hands-on approach to learning,” Holocher said. “Cal Poly’s philosophy is ‘learn by doing’ and we find that students are so engaged in reallife problem solving that they are ready for anything upon graduation. Being a student and athlete at Cal Poly is one of the best life preparations any young person could hope for. A love for learning, good time-management skills and teamwork are what we want to foster in our team culture.” Holocher is the founder and director of Catalyst Soccer: Player Development Programs, a not-for-profit youth training club for players ages 6-12. The club, which was founded in 1999 in Santa Cruz County, has an impact in youth player development and youth coaching development throughout the south bay, Monterey County and central coast. Holocher has also been involved with the Olympic Development Program Region IV team as head coach for the 1996 and 1997 boy’s squads where he helped identify, develop and promote several players to United States Youth National Teams. Holocher lives in San Luis Obispo with his wife, Juliet, their two sons, Lukas and Max, and their two dogs, Hobbes and Pele. In his free time, he enjoys exploring the outdoors of the central coast with his family, hiking nearby Bishop’s Peak, biking and going to local beaches.

REED
ASSISTANT COACH Fifth Season • Cal Poly, 2010 ormer Cal Poly standout defender Brian Reed will begin his fifth season as a member of head coach Paul Holocher’s managerial staff in 2011. Charged with overall player training and development, Reed has also reprised a recruiting role from his initial three-season assistant coaching stint on the Mustang touchline (2006-08). A three-year starter, twoyear captain and a 2003 AllBig West Conference first team selection during his playing career with Cal Poly (199903), Reed’s first coaching foray culminated during the 2008 campaign as the Mustangs posted their highest finish in the Big West standings (sec-
F
ond), qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 13 years and produced the first postseason victory at the Division I level – a 1-0 victory at UCLA. The Mustangs finished their finest season ranked No. 23 in the final NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll. Recruited and constructed in part by Reed, Cal Poly’s 2008 backline allowed a program-record 0.94 goals per game. Eric Branagan-Franco – who recorded nine clean sheets for the second-straight year and retired with eight Cal Poly career records, including save percentage (.805) and shutouts (25) – became the first Mustang to earn Big West Goalkeeper of the Year honors
ASSISTANT COACH (GOALKEEPERS)
while center back Patrick Sigler was named Co-Big West Conference Freshman of the Year. Both players earned NSCAA All-Far West Region praise while Sigler was invited to train with the United States U-20 Men’s National Team. The 2007 Mustangs allowed just 1.05 goals per game en route to setting program records for total Big West points (22), conference victories (six), fewest overall losses (four) and fewest conference losses (two) and matching the mark for overall victories (11). Led by K.J. Lenehan’s first team selection, three Mustang defensive players garnered AllBig West praise. Reed’s influence upon Cal
Poly’s backline was felt immediately. A year after the program leaked 39 goals in 20 matches, the 2006 Mustangs yielded just 20 in 19 outings. With the defense tightened, Cal Poly posted a fourth-place finish in the Big West table – a distinction that, at the time, matched the program’s best showing in the conference standings. Having helped Cal Poly compile the three-lowest goals-against averages in program history, Reed-coached Cal Poly sides have also produced 25 clean sheets and allowed just 64 goals in 61 matches entering the 2010 campaign. During Reed’s watch, five Mustang defensive
players have earned all-conference recognition. Prior to departing the program for the 2009 season, Reed helped produce a recruiting class that was ranked No. 33 among Division I programs by College Soccer News. Reed spent the 2009-10 term working under former United States Men’s National Team head coach and 2005 Major League Soccer Cupwinning manager Steve Sampson with the GSI Soccer Academy in Agoura Hills, Calif.
RYAN
HOPKINS
Third Season • Concordia (CA), 2004 wo-time NAIA AllAmerica selection Ryan Hopkins is in his third season as a member of Cal Poly’s coaching staff where he oversees the program’s goalkeepers and helps in recruiting efforts. Hopkins joined the Mustang program prior to the 2009 campaign after serving for five seasons as an assistant coach at Concordia University (Irvine, Calif.) and with one of the nation’s premier youth clubs, Irvine Strikers. With Cal Poly, Hopkins has mentored Mustang goalkeeper Patrick McLain to a pair of All-Big West selections. Under the watch of Hopkins, McLain led all Big West goalkeepers in save percentage during the 2009 (.830) and 2010 (.835) seasons and has failed to finish lower than third in goals-against average or shutouts in both campaigns. McLain finished the 2010 season ranked No. 13 in save percentage among all NCAA Division I goalkeepers.
T
“I really just try and give our goalkeepers the confidence in themselves to go out and be successful,” Hopkins said. “I believe that every training session is a chance for our goalkeepers to get better and I work very hard to ensure that is what is happening.” Hopkins has also made his mark on the recruiting trail for the Mustangs. The program has featured a top-40 recruiting class during each of his initial two seasons, pulling the No. 33 class for 2009 and the No. 38 class in 2010 (both graded by CollegeSoccerNews.com). “Coach Hopkins has a keen eye for talent and is one of the best recruiters on the west coast,” seventh-year Cal Poly head coach Paul Holocher said. “He is extremely thorough in his player evaluations and in making sure no stone is left unturned in our search for talent.” “I look for players that are, first and foremost, comfortable on the ball and are tech-
nically proficient with their passing. The Cal Poly style of play dictates that our players can pass and move at a high rate, so being a good passer is a must for us,” Hopkins said. “I also love players that are extremely competitive in everything they do. I feel that everything in life is a competition and I want our players to echo this sentiment. Being a student of the game is the final component I look for. I want my players to understand the nuisances of the game and have great passion for watching and studying it.” While serving as the lead assistant coach at Concordia (2004-08), Hopkins helped transform the Eagles into an NAIA powerhouse. Concordia advanced to the NAIA National Championship tournament during his tenure with the Eagles, finishing as runners-up in 2007 after falling in the title match against topseeded Azusa Pacific, 2-0. Concordia spent five weeks atop the NAIA national rank-
ings in 2007 after capturing Golden State Athletic Conference titles in 2005 and 2006. At Concordia, Hopkins coached 10 NAIA All-America selections, eight NAIA All-Far West Region picks and 20 AllGSAC players. With Hopkins, the Eagles were also ranked among the NAIA’s top 25 teams for a 33-week period. Hopkins has also served as coach and as the college coordinator for Irvine Strikers, one of 78 clubs in the United States Soccer Federation’s Development Academy. With Hopkins, Irvine Strikers was ranked among the top-20 clubs nationally by several media publications. A four-year starter in goal for Concordia (2000-04), Hopkins helped lead the program to its first appearance in the NAIA National Championship tournament in 2003. Hopkins departed the program as Concordia’s career leader in victories, ranked second in goalsagainst average and shutouts
and fourth in saves. In 2010, Hopkins was inducted into the Concordia Athletics Hall of Fame. “Playing college soccer for four years was one of the most amazing experiences of my life,” Hopkins added. “It really has shaped a big part of who I am as a person and has been a catalyst for my success.” Hopkins graduated from Concordia in 2004 with a bachelor’s degree in political science and obtained a master’s degree in athletic administration in 2008. Hopkins also holds a USSF A license and is the director of the Mustang Goalkeeper Academy. Hopkins is single and lives in San Luis Obispo. In his free time he enjoys golfing, kayaking, reading and supporting his beloved Manchester United.

SPANNING THE GLOBE ... THIS IS MUSTANG SOCCER ENGLAND
MAJOR LEAGUE SOCCER
A 2008 All-Big West first team pick at Cal Poly (2006-08), Anton Peterlin signed a one-year contract with English League One outfit Walsall Football Club in July 2011. Peterlin arrived in England in 2009 after inking a contract with Everton FC of the English Premier League. After appearing in eight reserve team matches with Everton, Peterlin – the only Big West player to have appeared in an English Football League match – spent the 2010-11 campaign with League One’s Plymouth Argyle FC.
Continuing with the 2011 Major League Soccer Central Coast Challenge between San Jose Earthquakes and Colorado Rapids, the Cal Poly men’s program has hosted three separate MLS exhibition series at Spanos Stadium. In 2008 (above), San Jose, D.C. United and Columbus Crew made appearances on the central coast. In 2009, Seattle Sounders contested its first official match in club history versus San Jose at Spanos Stadium.
Forward Junior Burgos enjoyed his third invitation to the El Salvador Men’s National Team training camp in September 2010 prior to friendlies against Honduras and Guatemala. Burgos (2009-10), who scored seven times for the Mustangs in 28 appearances, enjoyed his first invitation in 2009 prior to a friendly versus Peru. He was also called into the camp later that year for World Cup qualifiers against the United States and Costa Rica.
Exhibitions against top-flight Mexican opposition have been a hallmark of sixth-year head coach Paul Holocher’s tenure. Cal Poly hosted Club América’s reserve side in May 2009 and, following a scoreless draw, fell on penalties. In preparation for the 2010 campaign, Cal Poly also squared off against the Mexico U-20 Men’s National Team.

Entering the 2011 campaign, the Mustangs have produced a 25-5-6 overall mark at the complex and a 14-2-5 record against Big West Conference opponents. Additionally, the Mustangs have recorded 16 shutout victories at home while Cal Poly’s goalkeepers have kept 17 clean sheets. Nationally, Cal Poly’s home support is almost without peer. Of the top21 best-attended regular season matches in the history of NCAA soccer, five have occurred at Spanos Stadium during the past four seasons (see right). With a seating capacity for 11,075 supporters, Spanos Stadium can accommodate 3,480 fans in the chairback and bench seating on the refurbished California avenue side. In 2009, a video board was installed at a cost of more than $1 million. Twice during the past three seasons Fox Soccer Channel has produced a national television broadcast of Cal Poly’s regional showdown against rival UC Santa Barbara at Spanos Stadium.
