MEN’S SOCCER

Paul

Holocher

Head Coach • Seventh Season • Santa Clara, 1990 62-51-23 {Cal Poly, Seven Seasons} • 171-75-30 {Overall, 14 Seasons}

n eight years as Cal Poly men’s soccer head coach, Paul Holocher has transformed the Mustangs into a program recognized nationally for both a winning tradition and innovative style of play. During his 14 overall seasons as a head coach, Holocher has compiled a 171-75-30 record and led his programs to six total NCAA Tournament appearances. Included in that run is an NCAA Division III Tournament championship game showing with UC Santa Cruz in 2004 and an NCAA Division I Tournament appearance with Cal Poly during the 2008 season – the Mustang program’s first postseason showing in 13 years. The 2012 season proved to be another banner year for the Mustangs under Holocher with Cal Poly matching program records for overall victories (11) and conference victories (six) en route to reaching the Big West Tournament semifinals for the fourth time in five seasons. Led by forward Mackenzie Pridham – who became the first Big West Offensive Player of the Year selection in school history – the 2012 Mustang squad matched another program record by placing six Mustangs on the all-conference team. During six seasons inside Alex G. Spanos Stadium, Holocher has directed Cal Poly to a 36-13-8 home record and helped create one of the most loyal and passionate fan bases in the nation. Under Holocher’s

I

leadership, Cal Poly has finished among the top-10 Division I attendance leaders during each of the previous six years. During the 2012 season alone, the Mustangs averaged 2,709 fans per home match. “One of my main goals when I came to Cal Poly was to create an exciting and fun atmosphere for our community and youth to come and enjoy great college soccer,” Holocher said. “I feel we have some of the best college soccer fans in the country, both within our student body and the community, and the fan base is growing in passion each year. There are a lot of young families and more than 7,000 youth players on the central coast. We want each and every one of those young fans and families to know about Cal Poly soccer and for us to become a positive experience within their growth in the game.” Several of the highestattended matches in NCAA history have occurred under Holocher at Spanos Stadium, including two nationally televised broadcasts on Fox Soccer Channel against central coast rival UC Santa Barbara. The series versus UC Santa Barbara, which includes three sellouts at Spanos Stadium of more than 11,000 fans, has become the best-attended and most hotly contested rivalry in college soccer. Overall, 11 of the top 27 best-attended games in NCAA regular season history include matches featuring Cal Poly with each contest occurring since Holocher arrived in 2006. “The Big West is a fantastic conference with some great rivalries that are being devel-

oped,” Holocher said. “We also want to continually play the best teams in the nation outside of our conference, challenge ourselves and create great competitive memories for the young men in our program and for our fans.” As an attacking midfielder in college, Holocher helped Santa Clara to a 1989 NCAA Tournament championship and a 20-0-3 record under Steve Sampson and Mitch Murray. Holocher ended his career with selection to the NSCAA AllAmerica team and was a recipient of the Vincent Corsiglia academic award for highachieving student-athletes at Santa Clara. His 28 collegiate goals and 32 assists remain the second-highest career marks in Santa Clara history. He was inducted into the Santa Clara Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005. Following his time at Santa Clara, Holocher helped the San Francisco Blackhawks to the 1991 American Professional Soccer League title before signing with FC Admira Wacker of the Austrian Bundesliga. At 26, Holocher – who also earned one cap with the United States Men’s National Team in 1995 – was the 48th overall pick during the inaugural Major League Soccer Draft by San Jose Clash. Holocher, who also played for Chicago Fire, retired from professional soccer in 1999 to take his first head coaching position at UC Santa Cruz. Holocher quickly transformed UC Santa Cruz into a national power, compiling a 109-24-7 record in seven years and putting the program one victory away from the 2004 national championship. Four

players from his UC Santa Cruz program went on to play in MLS and several are now coaching in college soccer programs along the west coast, including San Francisco (Dan Chamberlain), Menlo College (Eric Bucherre) and UC Santa Cruz (David Frank). Holocher’s penchant for developing players continued at Cal Poly with former Mustang captain Anton Peterlin signing for Everton Football Club of the English Premier League in 2009 (Peterlin went on to start at Plymouth Argyle FC, becoming the first Big West Conference player to appear in an English Football League match). Most recently, Efrain Burgos became the first Mustang taken in the Major League Soccer SuperDraft when picked 44th overall by Toronto FC in 2011 while goalkeeper Patrick McLain signed with Chivas USA in 2012. In seven previous seasons under Holocher, Cal Poly has produced 34 All-Big West selections and five NSCAA AllRegion honorees. “We look for young men that want to be professionals in the sport and who are ambitious. We know that our goal of player development is always a high priority,” Holocher added. “We want to develop players that have a professional approach to how they play and live. Strong character, coachability and work ethic are keys to development and we look for young men that are ready to improve, compete and grow in the game each day.” Cal Poly players have not only excelled on the field under Holocher’s guidance, but in the classroom, as well. During the

past seven years, two Mustangs – K.J. Lenehan (2007) and Wes Feighner (2010) – have earned Big West Scholar-Athlete praise while the program has enjoyed a further 18 selections to the Big West All-Academic team. Cal Poly’s team Academic Progress Report rating, a barometer of academic success and graduation rates, has risen drastically since Holocher’s arrival. “It is important for us to recruit young men who are also motivated academically. Cal Poly features an impressive academic education with a hands-on approach to learning,” Holocher said. “Cal Poly’s philosophy is ‘learn by doing’ and we find that students are so engaged in real-life problem solving that they are ready for anything upon graduation. Being a student-athlete is one of the best life preparations any young person could hope for. A love for learning, good timemanagement skills and teamwork are what we want to foster in our team culture.” Holocher is the founder and director of Catalyst Soccer, a not-for-profit youth player development program for children ages 6-12. The club, which was founded in 1999 in Santa Cruz County, has an impact in youth player development and youth coaching development throughout the south bay, Monterey County and central coast. Holocher has also been involved with the Olympic Development Program Region IV team as head coach for the 1996 and 1997 boy’s squads where he helped identify, develop and promote several players to youth United States National Teams.

MEET THE MUSTANGS

Brian

Reed

Associate Head Coach Seventh Season • Cal Poly, 2010

elping to construct one of the top defensive programs in collegiate soccer during his time at Cal Poly, Mustang associate head coach Brian Reed returns for his seventh season on Paul Holocher’s managerial staff in 2013. The 2012 season ranked as another notable year for Cal Poly’s defense with the Mustangs finishing second among Big West programs in goals allowed (20) and shutouts (six) en route to matching program records for overall victories (11) and conference victories (six). A standout defender with the Mustangs (1999-03), Reed has helped oversee a stifling defense that has posted a 1.04 goals against average during his six combined seasons on the Cal Poly touchline. That 1.04 goals against average mark includes Cal

H

Poly’s record-smashing 2011 season during which the Mustangs established program bests for fewest goals conceded (17, in 18 games) and fewest goals allowed per game (0.94) and led the Big West with a 0.90 team goals against average. During Reed’s six years, Cal Poly has allowed just 1.09 goals per game (127 in 116 matches). “Brian has a passionate focus for developing strong defensive habits and skills in all of our players. An outstanding central defender during his playing days at Cal Poly, he takes great pride in the defensive side of the game as a coach,” Holocher said. “He works in a specialized way with our goalkeepers and backs to help them become team leaders. Brian also helps teach our team the important defensive responsibilities of each position, regardless of whether its being organized on set pieces or simply becoming a tougher and more reliable player in the critical moments that can decide a

match. He does an outstanding job of helping each individual improve and become a more complete player.” Charged with overall player recruitment, training and development, Reed was a three-year starter, two-year captain and a 2003 All-Big West first team selection during his playing career with Cal Poly. Reed’s first coaching stint at Cal Poly culminated during the 2008 campaign as the Mustangs posted their highest finish in the Big West standings (second), qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 13 years and produced the first postseason victory at the Division I level – a 1-0 win at UCLA. The Mustangs finished their finest season ranked No. 23 in the final NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll. Recruited and constructed in part by Reed, Cal Poly’s 2008 backline allowed a 0.94 goals against average. Eric Branagan-Franco – who recorded nine clean sheets for the second-straight

year and retired with eight Cal Poly career records, including save percentage (.805) and shutouts (25) – became the first Mustang to earn Big West Goalkeeper of the Year honors while center back Patrick Sigler was named Co-Big West Freshman of the Year. Both players earned NSCAA All-Far West Region praise while Sigler – a future Hermann Trophy candidate – was invited to train with the United States U-20 Men’s National Team. The 2007 Mustangs allowed just 1.10 goals per game en route to setting program records for total Big West points (22), conference victories (six), fewest overall losses (four) and fewest conference losses (two) and matching the mark for overall victories (11). Led by K.J. Lenehan’s first team selection, three Mustang defensive players garnered AllBig West praise. Reed’s influence upon Cal Poly’s backline was felt immediately. A year after the program leaked 39

goals in 20 matches, the 2006 Mustangs yielded just 20 in 19 games. With the defense tightened, Cal Poly posted a fourth-place finish in the Big West standings – a distinction that, at the time, matched the program’s best showing in the conference standings. Having helped the Mustangs compile the five lowest goals against averages in program history, Reed-coached Cal Poly sides have also produced 46 clean sheets. During Reed’s watch, Mustang defenders have earned 14 total All-Big West honors. Prior to departing the program for the 2009 season, Reed helped produce a recruiting class that was ranked No. 33 among Division I programs by College Soccer News. Reed spent the 2009-10 term working under former United States Men’s National Team head coach and 2005 Major League Soccer Cup-winning manager Steve Sampson with the GSI Soccer Academy in Agoura Hills, Calif.

Phil

Ruskin

Assistant Coach First Season • Elmhurst College, 2008

hil Ruskin is in his first season as an assistant coach with the Cal Poly men’s soccer program. Ruskin arrived in San Luis Obispo after serving as an assistant at Stony Brook (2011-12), where he was charged with the direction and training of the program’s goalkeepers and

P

overall recruiting efforts. Ruskin helped the Seawolves to the 2011 America East Conference championship and a berth into the NCAA Tournament. He also oversaw the development of goalkeeper Stefan Manz, the program’s career leader with 17 shutouts, and three-time America East Midfielder of the Year and two-time AllAmerica selection Leonardo Fernandes, drafted in January by Major League Soccer’s Philadelphia

Union. Prior to his time at Stony Brook, Ruskin was an assistant coach and director of operations at Valparaiso (2009-11), where he worked in all aspects of player training and recruiting and also served as an assistant strength and conditioning coach for the athletics department. With the Crusaders, Ruskin helped transform defender Stefan Antonijevic into a 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft pick by Sporting KC.

“In working now with our attacking players, Phil has a unique responsibility to develop them in our system and the style we believe in,” eighth-year Mustang head coach Paul Holocher said. “Each and every position on the field requires different functional training and we look to design appropriate trainings for each individual based on his position. We want to be a team that is skilled and dynamic and also intelligent in how our system works. Phil believes in how

we play and enjoys working with our many fine young players to help improve their level of play.” A four-year letterwinner (2004-08) at Division III Elmhurst College, Ruskin – who departed the Bluejays program ranked seventh alltime with 66 appearances – owns a United States Soccer Federation B coaching license and National Soccer Coaches Association of America Advanced National and Goalkeeper Level 2 diplomas.

standout player at Westmont College, Scott Williams is in his first season as a volunteer assistant with the Cal Poly men’s soccer program. Williams arrived at Cal Poly after serving as an assistant coach at Santa Barbara-based Westmont for the past two seasons. With the Warriors, Williams was responsible coaching Westmont’s goalkeepers, overseeing backline development, fortifying the program’s strength and conditioning regimen and helping to recruit the team’s 2013 and 2014 incoming classes. Williams, concurrently completing a master’s degree in kinesiology at Cal Poly, will assist in the development of the Mustang backline players and help to implement a sport-specific strength and nutrition plan. “Scott is eager to learn, develop and offer his expertise on the game and is a wonderful addition to our program,” eight-year Cal Poly head coach Paul Holocher said. A 2011 graduate of Westmont and four-year starting left back and midfielder, Williams helped the Warriors reach the quarterfinal round of the 2008 NAIA National Championship tournament. Williams is a native of Albuquerque.

four-year letterwinner for Cal Poly (200508), former midfielder Anthony Grillo is in his third season as the Mustang program’s director of operations. In his current capacity, Grillo organizes the program’s alumni relations endeavors and events and oversees Cal Poly’s community outreach programs, such as student of the game presentations at central coast elementary schools and free coaching clinics for local AYSO coaches. Grillo, who made 46 appearances during his four-year Mustang career, notched just one career goal, but his 49th-minute strike against nationally ranked UC Santa Barbara on Oct. 17, 2007 ranks as, arguably, the mostprominent goal in Cal Poly program history. In front of 7,143 spectators at Alex G. Spanos Stadium – at the time, the ninth-largest regular season attendance figure in NCAA history – Grillo converted a tap-and-go feed from forward Tim White to break a 1-1 halftime deadlock and snap Cal Poly’s then-12-match, seven-year winless drought versus Blue-Green rival UC Santa Barbara. The goal earned Grillo a spot on the Soccer America National Team of the Week, making him the first and only Mustang in program history to achieve the honor. A native of Sun Valley, Nev., Grillo made a career-high 15 appearances for the Mustangs during the 2007 season. He majored in horticulture at Cal Poly.

Aimed at fortifying the program’s already strong supporter base, Green Army membership includes tickets to all 10 of Cal Poly’s 2013 home matches, a commemorative scarf, invitation to the program’s annual Meet the Team Day skills clinic and access to both the season banquet and all spring matches. Additionally, Green Army members are guaranteed reserved chairback seating for Cal Poly’s Oct. 25 Blue-Green Rivalry match against UC Santa Barbara (members must arrive at least 15 minutes prior to the scheduled 7 p.m. start time). Topping CollegeSoccerNews.com’s list of the 14 Greatest Rivalries in College Soccer, the Cal Poly-UC Santa Barbara series has drawn 11 of the top 28 regular season crowd figures in NCAA history, including last year’s sellout mark of 11,075 fans for the Mustang program’s 1-0 triumph. Green Army season ticket packages are $100 for adults and $50 for youth supporters. A family package, which includes four tickets, is also available for $250. Half of all proceeds derived from Green Army membership go directly to supporting the Cal Poly men’s soccer program’s operating budget. “The Green Army is a special way to support the Mustang soccer program. We have

S

such a vibrant soccer community on the central coast and our matches are a fun mix of high-level college soccer and passionate student and community support,” Cal Poly head coach Paul Holocher said. “There is unique excitement at every match as we have developed an ‘our town, our team’ mentality during the past few years. Our young

men know that they play the game for more than just themselves. They know that they play hard for our university, our community and, always, the youth fans. Our Green Army members join knowing that they are helping us reach our goals and we are immensely thankful that they are part of the Mustang soccer family.”

This is Mustang Men’s Soccer Central Coast Support By any measure or metric, the Cal Poly men’s soccer team’s support at Alex G. Spanos Stadium is nearly unrivaled in the college game. Seven of the top 28 best-attended regular season matches in the history of NCAA soccer have occurred at Spanos Stadium. Entering the 2013 campaign, the Mustangs have produced a 36-13-8 overall mark at the complex and a 19-6-5 record against Big West Conference opponents. Additionally, the Mustangs have recorded 22 shutout victories at home while Cal Poly’s goalkeepers have kept 26 clean sheets. Cal Poly has sold out all 11,075 seats at Spanos Stadium for matches against central coast rival UC Santa Barbara in 2008, 2011 and 2012 – trio of contests that tie for the No. 10 spot on the list of the bestattended regular season matches in NCAA history.

Mustang supporters rush the Alex G. Spanos Stadium field following Cal Poly’s 2-1 victory against rival UC Santa Barbara in 2010.

Mustangs in the Pros The Cal Poly men’s program’s list of professional alumni grew lengthier during the 2012 offseason with two former Mustangs signing contracts with Major League Soccer clubs. Goalkeeper Patrick McLain (2007-11) inked a free agent deal with Chivas USA while midfielder Junior Burgos (2009-10) hooked on with Toronto FC (Burgos also became the first Mustang to be taken in the MLS SuperDraft when selected 44th by Toronto in 2011). Left back Wes Feighner (2008-11) was drafted by Seattle Sounders FC in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft, but was not signed by the club. The only Big West Conference player to have ever appeared in an English Football League match, midfielder Anton Peterlin (2006-08) signed with Everton FC of the Barclays Premier League in 2009. After appearing in eight reserve team matches with Everton, Peterlin spent the 2010-11 season with League One’s Plymouth Argyle FC (left, green top) and the 2011-12 campaign with fellow League One outfit Walsall FC. Brothers Mario (2006-08) and Carlos Fernandez (2007-08) have enjoyed careers with fifth-tier Spanish outfit Santa Pola CF.

Major LEague Soccer Showcases Continuing with the 2012 Major League Soccer Central Coast Showcase contested between San Jose Earthquakes and Colorado Rapids, the Cal Poly men’s program has hosted four separate MLS exhibition series at Alex G. Spanos Stadium during the past five years. In 2008, San Jose, D.C. United and Columbus Crew made appearances on the central coast. In 2009, Seattle Sounders FC contested its first official match in club history against San Jose at Spanos Stadium. San Jose and Colorado also tuned up for the 2011 season with a friendly at Spanos Stadium.

Alex G. Spanos Stadium The Home of Cal Poly Men’s Soccer

lex G. Spanos Stadium – rated No. 9 on CollegeSoccerNews.com’s 2011 list of The Most Exciting Places to Watch a College Soccer Match – serves as the hallowed home of the Cal Poly men’s soccer program. Backed by some of the most ravenous crowds in the history of collegiate soccer, the Mustangs have provided their fans with plenty to cheer about during the venue’s six years of existence. Nationally, Cal Poly’s home support is almost without peer. Of the top 28 best-attended regular season matches in the history of NCAA soccer, seven have occurred at Spanos Stadium during the past six seasons. Most recently, Cal Poly’s 11,075-seat sellout for a 1-0 victory against rival UC Santa Barbara on Nov. 3, 2012 ranked as the second most-attended collegiate soccer match last year – outdrawing even the College Cup championship. With the seating capacity of 11,075, Spanos Stadium can accommodate 3,480 fans in the chairback and bench seating on the refurbished California avenue side. In 2009, a video board was installed at a cost of more than $1 million. Twice during the past five seasons Fox Soccer Channel has produced a national television broadcast of Cal Poly’s regional showdown against UC Santa Barbara at Spanos Stadium.
