lex Crozier is in his 24th year as the head coach of the Cal Poly women’s soccer program. He’s the Mustangs’ first and only coach since the school began playing at the intercollegiate level in 1992. His teams have gone 266-151-42 overall, including six NCAA Tournament appearances. Crozier came into the 2014 season ranked No. 30 all-time nationally in career coaching victories (No. 2 among active coaches in California). The longest-tenured coach at Cal Poly, he also has the most career victories in Big West play among the conference’s coaches (97 over 19 seasons, part of a .690 winning percentage). In all, Crozier’s players have earned All-Big West honors a combined 118 times, the most of any member school since the formation of the league in 1996. He has also coached three NSCAA All-Americans at Cal Poly, in addition to 21 other student-athletes who were also chosen for all-regional status. Most recently, 2014 saw the Mustangs lead the conference in scoring for the second season in a row while also ranking in the league’s top half in fewest times conceded and shutouts. Alex Crozier, Cal Poly’s head coach since the program’s inaugural season of 1992, has led the Mustangs to a total of 11 conference championships whether on a regular-season or tournament basis. ing featured by ESPNW as one of five players to know in college soccer. Then on Oct. 19, the junior had ESPN’s “SportsCenter” No. 3 Play of the Day with a dramatic game-winning strike at UC Riverside, two weeks before being added to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate pool (joining 42 others in consideration for the national player of the year award). While leading the Big West in goals for the third consecutive year, Krieghoff broke the school’s career record, upping her total to 46, tied for the thirdmost among all Division I players entering 2015. Also in 2014, sophomore midfielder Megan Abutin ranked ninth nationally in assists, equaling the program’s single-season record with 12. In 2013, Crozier guided the Mustangs to the regular-season Big West championship with a 7-1-0 record, part of bringing Cal Poly’s run against con-

ference opponents over the past three seasons to 18-5-2. As a sophomore, Krieghoff tallied 21 times, earning the NCAA plaque as the nation’s leading goal scorer on a per-match basis (1.105). Afterward,

she was invited to attend the U-23 National Team camp in June at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista. Additionally, senior midfielder and defender Jordyn Zander won Cal Poly’s Sportsmanship Award among all of the school’s women’s sports, and in May of 2014, the team as a whole earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award for exceptional academic achievement (after compiling a perfect Academic Progress Rate score of 1,000, placing its multiyear APR in the top 10 percent across the country). Off the pitch, Crozier has seen his players earn all-academic honors from the conference 62 times. Also since 1998-99, the program has had four Academic All-Americans, two Big West Scholar-Athletes of the Year, two Cal Poly Scholar-Athletes of the Year and four NCAA Leadership Conference nominees. Crozier, a four-time Big West Coach of the Year, also led Cal Poly to the conference title in 2009, with another 7-1-0 mark (14-5-1 overall). During that championship run, senior goalkeeper Coral Hoover finished second in the nation in save percentage, at .919, still the 17th-best singleseason figure in the 33-year history of Division I. Hoover was a TopDrawerSoccer.com National Team of the Season honorable mention that year. It also included the Cal Poly debut for Cici Kobinski, who became the league’s midfielder of the year by 2012. After graduating, Kobinski went on to star as a winger for Guam, posting two goals and two assists as the Masakåda advanced to the semifinal stage of the 2014 East Asian Cup (making the sixthlargest jump among all 133 teams in FIFA’s rankings). The 2009 season also saw the Mustangs earn a memorable 1-0 overtime win over a No. 7-ranked Cal team featuring Alex Morgan. Putting together challenging schedules has long been a staple of the program, which between 2013 and 2014 played four matches televised on

either ESPN3 or the Pac-12 Network, and in the latter year, limited a trio of sides ranked in the top 15 to two goals each. On two occasions, Cal Poly has hosted the defending College Cup champion in Alex G. Spanos Stadium, losing 1-0 both times (vs. No. 3 Santa Clara in 2002 and No. 1 North Carolina in 2010). The Mustangs played against five members of the USWNT from the 2011 World Cup when they were in college, plus five more players who were on the American roster as of the spring of 2015. From 2006 through 2011, Cal Poly had four wins and two draws against teams ranked in the Top 25. Other non-conference fixtures over the years have seen the Mustangs claim tournament titles at venues including Missouri (at the 1998 Nike Tiger Invitational), Montana (the 2003 Diadora Cup), Purdue (the 2005 Boilermaker Challenge Cup), Hawai’i (the 2010 OHANA Resorts No Ka Oi Tournament) and Portland State (the 2011 Viking Classic). In 2003, the Mustangs set a team record by going 18-2-2, No. 2 in the country that season for winning percentage. They finished ranked No. 20 in the final Soccer America poll, and of the 22 matches, 15 were won by shutout, a ratio that was No. 4 in the nation and established a still-standing all-time Big West record. That season also saw the emergence of forward Sharon Day, who earned the conference tournament MVP award. Day, a two-sport star, has since gone on to qualify for two Olympic Games competing in track and field. Cal Poly first cracked the coaches association Top 25 poll at the Division I level in 1995, before doing so again in 1997, a year in which another Mustang up top, Gina Oceguera, won the overall Big West Player of the Year award. Oceguera went on to play in the 1999 World Cup representing Mexico. The ensuing fall also culminated with a milestone for the Mustangs, who de-

feated Fresno State in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, 2-1. The following winter, Oceguera was drafted by the San Diego Spirit before winning a WUSA title with the Bay Area CyberRays. In 1993, Cal Poly’s final season at the Division II level before moving to Division I, Crozier coached the program to the national championship match in Miami, earning the NSCAA National Coach of the Year award. Despite a loss in the final, Mustang forward Kolleen Kassis was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player on offense. Crozier, a 1984 Cal Poly graduate with a civil engineering degree, was an assistant for Santa Clara in 1991, and prior to that, he coached the West Valley FC Premier U-19 girls to the State Cup championship and a third-place national finish. As a midfielder at Cal Poly, Crozier was a team captain in 1982 and 1983, earning all-conference honors both years, as well as All-Far West Region distinction as a junior. He also coached the Cal Poly women’s soccer team from 1979-83 when it played as a club in the California Collegiate Women’s Soccer Conference. Before his Mustang career, Crozier won three consecutive CIF Central Section championships at Bullard High School in Fresno, where he was a captain and earned team MVP and all-league accolades in 1979. Crozier’s coaching impact has been felt at several programs around the nation. Dan Tobias, formerly the head coach at Arizona and Washington State, previously served as an assistant under Crozier. Others include Wendy Jones, a forward for Crozier who coached at Boise State, and P.J. Woolridge, another former assistant who went on to coach at San Diego, USC and now UC Irvine. Crozier resides in San Luis Obispo with his wife, Judy King, and the couple’s sons, Dan and Bo, and daughter, Angie.

As well as his role as recruiting coordinator, Silva’s focus with the Mustangs is specialized in the areas of technical development, fitness & con-

ditioning and film breakdown. During his initial two seasons on Alex Crozier’s staff, he has helped mentor four different NSCAA All-West Region honorees, plus nine other allconference players. Additionally, in March of 2015 at the Cal South Awards Banquet in Long Beach, Silva was honored as the organization’s Nike Developmental Coach of the Year. Prior to joining the women’s program, Silva worked with the Cal Poly men’s team as an assistant in 2012. He was part of a staff that matched the school record for Big West victories (six) while reaching the conference tournament semifinals. After relocating from Portugal to the United States at 18, Silva graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 2011 with a degree in psychology and a double

While completing his degree at UCSB, he also worked as a regional scout for the MLS’ New York Red Bulls, acquiring expertise in identifying, selecting and recommending collegiate players for the franchise. An owner of a U.S. Soccer Federation National C coaching license, Silva has also studied sport and exercise psychology at England’s Loughborough University. In Great Britain, Silva added to his insight during an internship with famed Scottish club Hearts FC, where he observed training sessions and staff collaboration meetings, and studied manager-player dynamics. Silva also holds a personal training certificate from the National Academy of Sports Medicine.

est save percentage. Smith finished her senior season at Westmont as a first-team NAIA AllAmerican. She anchored the Warriors during their run to the 2013 national championship match in Alabama. As a senior, when she was named the co-Golden State Athletic Conference Player of the Year, Smith finished with a 0.56 GAA, No. 2 in school history and second-best in the country. In Westmont’s two postseason games that came down to penalties, she blocked a combined four out of 11 attempts as the Warriors advanced each time. Smith, a three-time All-GSAC honoree from Pleasanton, finished her career with 61 starts between the posts, a

school record. Westmont also held local youth clinics after home games, and during the 2012-13 school year, fundraised for a trip to Africa. Through a partnership with the Sports Outreach Institute, the team spent more than two weeks working with communities in Nairobi, Kampala and Gulu. For its effort on and off the field, Westmont earned the NAIA Champions of Character Award, an honor given annually to a team for displaying integrity, respect, responsibility, sportsmanship and service. Smith earned a degree in history (with a focus in secondary education), graduating in 2013.

larly specialized in mentoring the defense, which has imposed 35 shutouts throughout her tenure. She has coached three NSCAA All-West Region players in the Cal Poly back line (including Cristina Farrington most recently in the 2013 championship season), as well as eight others who’ve earned all-conference status. Twice since 2010, the Mustangs have tied the all-time school record by not allowing a shot on goal during an entire match. Lemieux was a defender at UC Irvine, where she started 71 times, which tied for No. 3 in program history. She was a team captain as a se-

Also concurrently serving as the men’s team’s director of operations, he helped their program post its fourth winning season over a five-year stretch in 2014. Williams came to San Luis Obispo after spending two seasons coaching at Westmont, where he was responsible for mentoring the goalkeepers,

Alex G. Spanos Stadium

The Home of Cal Poly Women’s Soccer In 2006, Alex G. Spanos Stadium was renovated on the California Avenue side, and three years later, a video board was installed behind the north goal. The stadium also houses Cal Poly football and men’s soccer games, as well as ceremonies for graduation, Week of Welcome and other celebratory events. On Sept. 10, 2010, a record crowd of 2,532 watched Cal Poly host No. 1-ranked North Carolina, the twotime defending national champion. (The Tar Heels won 1-0, scoring in the 49th minute.) The Friday-night attendance figure eclipsed the old mark of 2,299, set Aug. 27, 2004 for a 2-2 draw against No. 3 Santa Clara. Community Outreach Cal Poly Women’s Soccer takes time every season to serve our community. By spending time volunteering, we gain leadership skills, share the women’s love of soccer and, most importantly, get to know and support our community. Special Olympics The Special Olympics is an organization that welcomes all athletes, regardless of their ability or disability. Our team helped out during the San Luis Obispo Regional Games, doing everything from set-up to cheering on local athletes competing. Local Elementary Schools Our team prides itself on not only being great soccer players but also fantastic students. We share that commitment with local elementary schools, teaching children about being active and spending time reading in class. SLO Food Bank The local food bank serves all of San Luis Obispo County by providing nutritious food to people in need. To support them, the team went out to inspect and sort donated food before it was distributed. United Methodist Children’s Center Rummage Sale Every year around spring cleaning time, UMCC holds a huge rummage sale, from which all proceeds support a Children’s Center staff enrichment program. Putting their muscles to work, the team comes in as a clean-up crew and helps load out the rest of the donated items for Goodwill.

Cal Poly Women’s Soccer Honors Note: The program started as an NCAA Division II independent in 1992, and played the 1993 season in the California Collegiate Athletic Association. Cal Poly then moved to the Division I level before the 1994 season, again playing as an independent, before joining the Big West Conference prior to 1996.

After a highly decorated two-sport career at Cal Poly, Sharon Day went on to compete at two Olympics in track and field — first in the high jump in Beijing in 2008, and then in the heptathlon in London in 2012.

Cici Kobinski (15) earned the Big West Conference Midfielder of the Year award as a senior in 2012 after tallying seven assists. Cal Poly Women’s Soccer Honors

Midway through her junior season of 2014, Elise Krieghoff was added to the Missouri Athletic Club Hermann Trophy candidate pool, becoming one of 43 players eligible for the national player of the year award. Krieghoff, named the co-Disney/NSCAA National Player of the Week on Sept. 23, 2014, also broke the all-time Big West record for most conference player-of-the-week accolades ever accrued (reaching eight that season). In May of 2014, she was one of 26 players invited to the U.S. Women’s National Team U-23 training camp held in Chula Vista that June. Whether on a single-game, season or career basis, Krieghoff will enter her senior year already owning six different school goals records, including most all-time (46).

Kolleen Kassis set several Cal Poly records. A member of the first four Mustang squads, Kassis helped lead Cal Poly to the 1993 Division II national championship match (above, left) in Miami Shores, Fla. She earned Most Outstanding Offensive Player honors for the tournament. After the program moved to the Division I level, Kassis was an NSCAA All-West Region first-team selection in both 1994 and 1995. In 1995, the Mustangs finished the year ranked No. 21 in the nation in the Intercollegiate Soccer Coaches Association of America poll. Kassis (now Kolleen McNamee) was inducted into the Cal Poly Athletics Hall of Fame in 2004.

In the summer before her senior season at Cal Poly, Gina Oceguera played in three matches during the 1999 World Cup as a sweeper for Mexico. A former Big West Conference Player of the Year, Oceguera was later chosen in the fifth round (with the 35th overall pick) by the San Diego Spirit in the 2000 Women’s United Soccer Association Draft. She also played for the Bay Area CyberRays in the WUSA’s inaugural 2001 season, and started at defender in the league championship match against the Atlanta Beat at Foxboro Stadium in Massachusetts. In front of a crowd of 21,078, the CyberRays won the first WUSA title on penalty kicks, 4-2, following a 3-3 draw through overtime.

NOTE REGARDING OVERTIMES: Through 1996, in the regular season, there were two 15-minute supplements that were fully played out. However, in the postseason, if the game was not followed the next day by another game, the two 15-minute supplements were followed by — if necessary — two ensuing 15-minute golden goal periods, followed by penalties. Whitney Sisler (9) and the Mustangs hosted No. 1-ranked North Carolina, the two-time defending national champion, before a program-record 2,532 fans in Alex G. Spanos Stadium. Cal Poly held the Tar Heels scoreless in the first half before allowing a goal in the second and falling 1-0. Mustang keeper Brooke Gauvin made seven saves. “Honestly,” UNC coach Anson Dorrance told the San Luis Obispo Tribune newspaper afterward, “we were lucky to get out of here with a one-nothing victory.” The Friday-night crowd eclipsed the old mark of 2,299, set Aug. 27, 2004 for a 2-2 draw against No. 3 Santa Clara.

Cal Poly players celebrate the program’s first Big West Conference Tournament championship in 1996 at Titan Stadium in Fullerton.
