al Poly's 6,000-squarefoot baseball hitting facility was completed for use by the Mustang baseball team in November 2012. The batting cage features retractable netting, which allows for three long cages and three short cages. The facility can be set up from a single 120by-50-foot practice area to several space combinations. Major donors for the $300,000 lighted facility include Jim Newkirk, Ted Lilly, Al Montna, Paul Pluschkell and Robin Baggett. It is located down the left-field line adjacent to the Mustang clubhouse. "The new hitting facility is awesome," said Mustang head coach Larry Lee. "Weather is never

an issue anymore. The structure can configure into six cages or can open up into one large space where we can field, throw, or hit. You get a much better feel of ball flight when hitting in the open space, especially with a 14-foot-high ceiling. "Our teams have always put a lot of time in the batting cages before and after practice," Lee added. "Having a quality covered structure with lights makes it that much better." Major contractor was Doug Craghead of D.A. Craghead Construction Inc. in San Luis Obispo. West Coast Netting of Kingman, Ariz., installed the netting for the facility.
