JOE
CALLERO
Head Coach • Seventh Season • Central Washington, 1986 90-99 {Cal Poly} • 229-239 {16 Seasons}
@CoachCallero
aving established the Cal Poly men’s basketball team as the Big West Conference’s elite defensive program and with the Mustangs enjoying their most successful period in the Division I era, Joe Callero is in his seventh season as head coach. Under Callero, Cal Poly’s 49 Big West victories rank as the highest total over a six-year period in program history while the team’s 90 total wins rank as the highest sixyear total in 23 seasons. The Big West’s dominant defensive program, Cal Poly has led the conference in fewest points allowed per game for the last five seasons while ranking as one of the nation’s top 40 defensive programs in four of the last five years. Also one of the nation’s most efficient squads, Cal Poly ranked second last season among 345 Division I programs with just 8.8 turnovers committed per game. During the previous three seasons combined, Cal Poly has led Division I with just 9.1 turnovers committed per game. Additionally, Cal Poly ranks first among Big West programs during the previous four years with a combined 1.31-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio. Through Callero’s direction, Cal Poly’s finish to the 2013-14 season ranked as one of the most notable athletics achievements in university history. The first and only No. 7 seed in the 40-year history of the Big West Conference Tournament to claim the crown, Cal Poly swept aside second-seeded UC Santa Barbara, No. 1 UC Irvine and fifth-seeded CSUN to earn the program’s first Big West championship and first NCAA
H
Division I Tournament berth. At the NCAA Tournament First Four, the Mustangs topped fellow No. 16 seed Texas Southern to record the program’s first postseason win in 32 years and the only NCAA Tournament victory by a Big West program in the last 10 seasons. Despite falling to top-seeded Wichita State in the second round, Cal Poly finished the year ranked fifth nationally in fewest turnovers per game (8.9) and 37th in points allowed per game (63.6). Individually, Cal Poly has produced nine All-Big West selections under Callero while, in 2014, Chris Eversley became the first Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player selection in program history. With a reputation for refining talent, Callero – who coached NBA champion Brian Scalabrine at USC (1998-99) – has helped produce nine professional players at Cal Poly. Most recently, Eversley (2010-14) signed with Belgian first division club Kangoeroes Basket Willebroek while guard Amaurys Fermin (200912) was named 2013 Rookie of the Year in the Dominican Republic national league and guard Drake U’u (2009-13) helped the Perth Wildcats to the 2014 Australia National Basketball League championship. Cal Poly annually competes against the nation’s best programs in high-profile environments. During the 2014-15 season alone, the Mustangs squared off against nationally ranked Gonzaga, Saint Mary’s and California, faced two more teams that made the NCAA Tournament (Northeastern, UC Irvine) and played nine nationally televised games. In the classroom, the Mustangs have performed exceptionally under Callero’s guidance with all 16 senior players during the previous four seasons earning degrees. Cal Poly’s four-year NCAA Academic Progress Rate score of 976 between 2010-11 and 2013-14 is above the national average for Division I programs.
In support of Cal Poly’s talent, winning ways and nationally recognized style of play, the Mustang program has experienced a 34.8 percent increase in attendance between the 2008-09 campaign (the final season prior to Callero’s arrival) and last season’s average of 2,411 fans per home game. The 2,411-fan average from the 2014-15 season marked the program’s highest total in 12 years. Under Callero, Cal Poly is 49-29 (62.8 percent) inside Mott Athletics Center and 31-19 (62.0 percent) in Big West home games. Between the 2011-12 and 2013-14 seasons, Cal Poly won 16 straight conference home games. Setting the stage for Cal Poly’s 2013-14 championship season was a 2012-13 Mustang squad that set program records for Big West victories (12) and Big West winning percentage (.667) en route to a second successive Big West Tournament semifinal appearance. An overall 18win total helped Cal Poly match or exceed its victory total from the previous year for the fourth successive season (a feat not accomplished for 41years). The 2012-13 Mustangs also finished 13-1 inside the Mott Athletics Center to set Division I program records for home victories, fewest home losses and home winning percentage (.929). In toppling No. 11 UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, the Mustangs chalked up their first victory against a ranked opponent and, as part of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament, Cal Poly played the program’s first postseason game in 27 years. Cal Poly also finished second nationally in fewest turnovers per game (9.4) and fourth in assistto-turnover ratio (1.46-to-1). Cal Poly finished the 2011-12 season ranked among Division I basketball’s top-25 defensive programs for a second successive year. Along the way, Cal Poly produced an 18-win season, reached the Big West Tournament semifinals for the first time in five years and, during a 100-54 victory against Cal State
Northridge, the Mustangs sank their first 11 three-point attempts to match a 25-year-old NCAA record. Selected to finish fifth in the Big West standings during the 2010-11 season, Cal Poly instead matched single-season program records for highest showing in the Big West (second) and highest seeding for the conference tournament (second). The Mustangs also cemented their status as a defensive powerhouse by finishing third among NCAA Division I programs in opponent three-point percentage and sixth in opponent points per game. Callero’s initial 2009-10 season at Cal Poly yielded one of the top singleyear turnarounds in program history. In orchestrating a five-win improvement from the previous year, Callero also directed the Mustangs to their best start to any Big West season (52). Predicted to finish last in the standings, Cal Poly clinched the No. 6 seed for the Big West Tournament and capped the year by winning the program’s first conference tournament game in three seasons. Named head coach of Cal Poly on April 3, 2009, Callero has developed a reputation for revitalizing programs. As head coach at Seattle (2001-09), Callero directed the Redhawks to 75 victories during his final four seasons and successfully led the program through its Division I transition. Callero’s final 2008-09 season with the Redhawks produced a 21-8 campaign and the program’s highest winning percentage in 45 seasons. Additionally, the 2008-09 Seattle squad – as an independent program – finished No. 131 out of 347 Division I programs in the final Sagarin Ratings. Under Callero, Seattle finished the 2006-07 season with a 20-9 record, a Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and the program’s first berth in the NCAA Division II Tournament in 38 years. During just his second season at Seattle (200203), Callero directed the Redhawks to a 16-11 finish that was the pro-
gram’s first winning campaign in nine seasons and a 10-victory improvement upon the previous year. Prior to success at Seattle, Callero guided Division III University of Puget Sound to a combined 22-25 record during the 1999-00 and 200001 seasons. The Loggers finished 14-10 during his final season to secure the program’s first winning campaign in nine years. Before pointing Puget Sound in a winning direction, Callero served the 1998-99 season as an assistant coach at USC. During his one season in Los Angeles, Callero assisted the Trojans to the NIT. A prominent figure on the northwest basketball scene for more than two decades, Callero compiled a 130-49 mark during two three-season stints at Highline Community College (1989-92, 1995-98) and, before departing for USC, helped guide the Thunderbirds to successive Northwest Athletic Association of Community Colleges championships. Callero twice earned conference Coach of the Year praise after Highline posted a combined 63-2 mark during the 1996-97 and 199798 campaigns. Between successful stints at Highline Community College, Callero served as the head coach and as a guidance counselor at Sumner HS (1992-95). Under Callero, Sumner also posted its first winning campaign in six years. A 1986 graduate of Central Washington with a bachelor’s degree in psychology, Callero helped guide the Wildcats to consecutive NAIA National Championship appearances. The point guard and captain of Central Washington’s 1985-86 squad received his master’s degree in education from Seattle in 1991. One of 16 children, Callero is a graduate of Enumclaw HS. Callero, his wife, Erika, and daughter, Malia, reside in nearby Arroyo Grande.

ith attention aimed at forging recruiting efforts and continually improving Cal Poly’s frontcourt game, Paul Fortier – a veteran professional player of 17 European seasons – is in his third year as associate head coach with the Mustang men’s basketball program. “Paul is a talented, experienced and professional coach and a perfect fit for our program as a teacher, mentor and recruiter,” seventh-year Cal Poly head coach Joe Callero said. “On the floor, Paul helps develop our post players and as a recruiter, he helps maintain our out-of-state contacts and strengthens our California relationships. With Paul’s leader-
W
ship, I look forward to the continued progress of Mustang basketball.” With Fortier on the bench last season, Cal Poly led all Big West programs in fewest points allowed per game for a fifth successive year while the team’s 8.8 turnover-per-game average ranked second among 345 Division I programs. Individually under Fortier last year, forward Brian Bennett earned All-Big West praise after finishing 64th nationally with a 50.7 percent field goal mark while forward Joel Awich ranked fifth among Big West players with 1.3 blocks per game. During his initial 2013-14 season at Cal Poly, Fortier assisted the Mustangs to the program’s first Big West Conference championship and an NCAA Tournament second round appearance. The 201314 Mustangs finished 37th nationally in points allowed per game (63.6) while forward Chris Eversley became the first Big West Tournament Most
Valuable Player selection in program history. Fortier arrived at Cal Poly in June 2013 after serving as an assistant at Washington for eight seasons. Tasked with developing Washington’s post players, Fortier’s protégés include Los Angeles Clippers center Spencer Hawes (selected 10th in the 2007 NBA Draft by Sacramento), Memphis Grizzlies forward Quincy Pondexter (selected 26th in the 2010 draft by Oklahoma City) and Los Angeles Clippers guard C.J. Wilcox (selected 28th in the 2014 draft). Fortier also groomed forward Jon Brockman (selected 38th in the 2009 NBA Draft by Portland; currently with French club Élan Chalon) and forward Matthew Bryan-Amaning, an AllPac-12 first team selection and the conference’s Most Improved Player honoree for the 2010-11 season. During eight seasons in Seattle, Fortier assisted Washington to four NCAA Tournament appearances,
including Sweet 16 showings in 2006 and 2010. Washington compiled three 25-plus win seasons with Fortier on the bench. Prior to his time at Washington, Fortier spent two seasons at Cornell (2003-05) where he helped the Big Red lead the Ivy League in rebounding during his first year and to a second-place league finish – the program’s highest in 17 years – during his second season. A four-year letterwinner and three-year starting forward at Washington (1983-86), Fortier assisted the Huskies to three successive NCAA Tournaments (1984-86) and Pac-10 titles in 1984 and 1985. A 1986 All-Pac10 selection after averaging 14.8 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, Fortier departed Washington as the 18th-leading scorer in program history with 1,326 career points. His 19 rebounds versus Arizona on Feb. 12, 1983 still rank as the third-highest single-game total in program history. Fortier was selected by the
Washington Bullets in the fifth round of the 1986 NBA Draft and spent 17 seasons in Europe, competing in the top leagues Italy, France, Spain and Greece. A member of the 1998 and 1999 French Cup-winning club Cholet Basket, Fortier participated in the 1997 and 1998 French All-Star Games. Fortier averaged more than 15 points per game during 13 of his 17 seasons overseas. Fortier’s top statistical effort came during the 1995-96 season when he averaged 21.5 points and 10.2 rebounds per game while with French side Le Mans Sarthe Basket. A product of San Francisco’s St. Ignatius College Prep, Fortier averaged 20 points and 11.5 rebounds per game during his senior season to earn AllNorthern California praise and All-America honorable mention acclaim. In May 2014, Fortier was inducted into the San Francisco Prep Hall of Fame. Fortier and his wife, Elizabeth, have two daughters, Kassia and Marissa.
berth in 38 years. “Sam’s feel for the game as well as our young players is excellent. I was fortunate to coach him as a player and even more fortunate to have him as my assistant.” Kirby arrived at Cal Poly following a one-season stint at Cañada College (Redwood City, Calif.) where he was involved in all aspects of oncourt coaching, strength and conditioning, recruiting and perimeter player development in helping the Colts to a 20-6 overall record, a second-place finish in the Coast Conference with an 8-4 mark and a final No. 7 ranking in the California Community College Athletic Association coaches poll. Kirby also spent two seasons
as an assistant at Shoreline Community College (2008-10) in Seattle. A Sacramento native, Kirby served as a student assistant coach at Seattle during the 2007-08 campaign while completing a bachelor’s degree in liberal studies with a minor in psychology. An All-Bay Valley Conference selection at San Joaquin Delta College (200305), Kirby helped the Mustangs to a 30-2 record during the 2004-05 season and a berth in the semifinals of that year’s CCCAA state championships. A graduate of Sacramento’s Foothill HS, Kirby assisted the program to the 2003 California Interscholastic Federation Division III state championship and a 36-2 record.

Guard Jamal Johnson departed in 2014 as the program’s all-time appearances leader (128) while ranking seventh with 303 assists and producing a 2.05-to-1 career assist-to-turnover ratio. All-Big West selection Dylan Royer finished fifth (2011-12) and 18th (2012-13) in three-
point percentage among more than 4,000 Division I shooters. Cal Poly’s backcourt strength has contributed directly to the program’s overall success with the Mustangs capturing the program’s first Big West Conference championship in 2014 and reaching the NCAA Tournament second round. “Sam continues to develop into a top-level trainer, recruiter and game-day coach,” said Cal Poly head coach Joe Callero, who coached Kirby at Seattle University during the 2005-06 and 2006-07 seasons, the latter year resulting in a 20-9 overall record, a Great Northwest Athletic Conference title and the program’s first NCAA Division II Tournament

program. Promoted to assistant coach in August 2013 following a four-year stint as Cal Poly’s director of operations, Reaves’ impact was felt immediately with the Mustangs capturing the program’s first Big West Conference championship in 2014 and reaching the NCAA Tournament second round. Defensively, Cal Poly finished 16th among NCAA Division I programs last season with just 59.3 points allowed per game and – with
Reaves on the sidelines – the Mustangs have led the Big West Conference in scoring defense for five successive years. Overall, the Mustangs ranked second nationally last year with just 8.8 turnovers per game and, during the 2013-14 season, finished fifth at just 8.9 turnovers per game. In his former capacity as Cal Poly’s director of operations, Reaves coordinated player workouts and recruiting endeavors, in addition to organizing team travel, video
exchange, the program’s summer camp series and directing the program’s student managerial staff. “Mitch is bright, personable and passionate and an excellent recruiter and coach on the floor,” seventh-year Cal Poly head coach Joe Callero said. Reaves began his career as Seattle University’s director of operations during the 200809 season. Prior to arriving at Seattle, Reaves served as a team manager with Washington State (2005-08) and as the head manager dur-
ing his final two seasons. With the Cougars, his duties included organizing the program’s recruiting database and coordinating team activities. Reaves attended and helped coordinate operations for Washington State at the 2007 and 2008 NCAA Tournaments. The Cougars reached the Sweet Sixteen in 2008. Reaves received his bachelor’s degree in sports management with a concentration in business administration from Washington State in 2007.

H
Vanden Berge, who arrived in San Luis Obispo after serving last season as an assistant coach at two-year Jacksonville College (Jacksonville, Texas), is responsible for scout work and opponent game preparation, scheduling team travel and logistics, coordinating video exchange, organizing summer camps, facility scheduling and overseeing Cal Poly’s student managerial staff. As an assistant coach at Jacksonville College for the 2014-15 season, Vanden
Berge was tasked with recruiting, practice planning, film editing and scouting report compilations. Jacksonville College finished 19-12 and, with Vanden Berge on staff, four Jaguars moved on to Division I programs. On sabbatical during the 2013-14 season with the purpose of observing the daily workings of collegiate programs, Vanden Berge traveled the United States visiting practices and interacting with coaches at more than 70 different schools.
A volunteer assistant with a Creighton program that reached the third round of the 2013 NCAA Tournament, Vanden Berge assisted the Jays coaching staff with scout work and the compilation of postgame reports. An assistant coach with NAIA Biola University (La Mirada, Calif.) from 2007-09, Vanden Berge later served as an administrative assistant at Washington (2009-12) where he helped coordinate recruiting efforts, aided with scouting reports and gener-
ated postgame film evaluations. While Vanden Berge was in Seattle and working under current Cal Poly associate head coach Paul Fortier, Washington captured two Pac-12 Conference Tournament titles, one regular season championship and reached the 2010 NCAA Tournament Sweet Sixteen. A 2007 graduate of Whitworth University (Spokane, Wash.), Vanden Berge earned a Master of Arts in Teaching from Biola in 2009.
