Faith Mimnaugh Head Coach 16th Season Loyola-Chicago ‘85
Head Coach 16th Season Loyola-Chicago, 1985 The most-successful coach during history of Cal Poly women’s basketball, Faith Mimnaugh enters her 16th season at the helm of the Mustang program. She coached the Mustangs to back to back Big West Championships in 201011 and 2011-12. In the 2011-12 season the Mustangs finished first in regular season Big West Conference play. Kristina Santiago was named Player of the Year and Kayla Griffin, Ashlee Burns and Jonae Ervin were all named All Big West. Jonae also received Big West Hustle Player of the Year. The Mustangs made it to their 2nd consecutive post season appearance, but fell short in their first round WNIT game at Washington. Mimnaugh has coached the last three Big West Player of the Years in Kristina Santiago (09-10 and 11-12) and Rachel Clancy (10-11). She was awarded the Big West Coach of the Year in 2010-11 as well for their first ever Big West Championship. The Mustangs made it to their first ever post season WNIT appearance. During the 2008-09 campaign the Mustangs advanced to the Big West Conference Tournament championship game and established a new program record with a .656 winning percentage while the 21 victories accumulated matched the 1981-82 Mustang squad for the highest single-season win total in program history. Cal Poly’s 11 losses ranked as the second-fewest amount in program history while the Mustangs finished the year 10 games above a .500. The Mustangs, who finished third in the conference standings for just the second time in program history, also set new Big West program records for victories (11), fewest losses (5) and overall winning percentage (.688). Page 13
Additionally, Cal Poly compiled its ninth-straight season of double-digit victories and, for the fifth time in six seasons, posted at least a .500 winning percentage in Big West play. Individually, forward Santiago became Cal Poly’s fourth All-Big West first team selection while senior forward Megan Harrison finished her career as the second-leading scorer in program history and as just the second Mustang to earn three nods to the allconference team. Helping to set the stage, Cal Poly’s 2007-08 squad produced numerous noteworthy feats. The Mustangs began the conference campaign with four-straight victories en route to a 6-3 start that was not only the program’s top beginning to a Big West season, but the best overall league launch in 26 years. Despite entering the Big West Tournament as the field’s fifth seed, Cal Poly routed UC Irvine during the opening round before overcoming a 17-point halftime deficit to eliminate Pacific during the quarterfinal phase. Despite falling at the semifinal hurdle against eventual NCAA Tournament qualifier UC Santa Barbara, forward Becky Tratter became only Cal Poly’s second selection to the Big West All-Tournament Team. In Harrison – who became the first Mustang in 21 years to record 400 points and 200 rebounds during a single campaign – Cal Poly placed a player on the All-Big West first team for a third-straight season while Santiago earned conference all-freshman team consideration. During Mimnaugh’s tenure, Cal Poly players have merited all-conference consideration 22 times while seven Mustangs have been named to the Big West All-Freshman Team.

Forward Jessica Eggleston (2003-07), one of Cal Poly’s two Big West Scholar-Athlete selections for 2007, finished her career as Cal Poly’s fourth-leading scorer while guard Sparkle Anderson (2003-08) departed with a program-best 118 appearances (a record eventually matched by Harrison in 2009). In August 2008, Mimnaugh became one of only two Cal Poly coaches to have managed an Olympic gold medalist after former center and Mustang track and field letterwinner Stephanie Brown Trafton (199800) won the discus competition at the 2008 Beijing Summer Games. Via the strength of an eight-game winning streak – the program’s lengthiest spurt in 24 years – the 2006-07 Mustangs posted a 14-14 overall mark and a 9-5 Big West record. Cal Poly’s 78-72 defeat of Cal State Northridge on Jan. 27, 2007 was the 101st victory of Mimnaugh’s tenure at Cal Poly, sending her past Jill Orrock (1986-95) atop the Mustang career wins chart (Mimnaugh enters the 2009-10 campaign with 142 victories at Cal Poly). Forward Jessica Eggleston capped her Cal Poly career by becoming the first Mustang to earn consecutive All-Big West first team honors while the backcourt tandem of Ashlee Stewart and Tamara Wells comprised 40 percent of the Big West All-Freshman Team. The 2005-06 Mustangs (13-14, 7-7) posted the third-highest single-season win total during Mimnaugh’s tenure. Highlighting the campaign was an 82-71 victory at UC Santa Barbara that was the program’s first win at The Thunderdome in 23 years. The Mustangs also finished the year ranked fifth among Division I squads with 12.4 steals per game. Under Mimnaugh, Cal Poly has consistently posted steady finishes and notable results. Six seasons ago, Cal Poly finished 14-14,
reaching the .500 plateau for the first time in 13 years and establishing, at the time, a program record for victories during the Division I era. One of Cal Poly’s 12 victories during the 2000-01 campaign was a 76-70 edging of UC Santa Barbara, a win that snapped the Gauchos’ 49-game conference winning streak. Mimnaugh’s peers recognized her as the 1999-00 Big West Co-Coach of the Year after directing Cal Poly to the first of five-consecutive Big West Tournament berths. A four-year All-Mid-Suburban League and three-time all-area selection at Elk Grove HS in Elk Grove Village, Ill., Mimnaugh (1977-81) assisted the Grenadiers to the 1981 Class AA state championship. Mimnaugh, selected to the 1981 All-Illinois team, helped Elk Grove compile an 84-22 mark during her four-year career. Mimnaugh played collegiately at Loyola-Chicago (1981-85) and remains the Ramblers’ career assist leader (1,000). The 316 assists Mimnaugh handed out during her 1984-85 senior campaign not only led the nation, but still ranks as the sixth-highest single-season total in NCAA Division I history. Additionally, the 11.7 per-game figure she posted as a senior remains the third-best mark in Division I history. The Ramblers compiled a 79-32 slate during Mimnaugh’s tenure. For her collegiate accomplishments, Mimnaugh was inducted into the Loyola Hall of Fame in 1992. In 2007, Mimnaugh was also inducted into a the Illinois Basketball Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Mimnaugh began her post-collegiate playing career with the Newcastle (Australia) Scorpions, serving as a guard and player-coach from 1987-89. Mimnaugh began building her coaching reputation as an assistant at North Carolina State (1989-93). During four years with the Wolfpack, she oversaw the operation of a program that reached as high as No. 2 in the national polls. While working under legendary head coach Kay Yow – the 1988 United States Olympic Team coach – Mimnaugh helped propel North Carolina State to the 1990 Atlantic Coast Conference title and 1991 ACC Tournament championship. Mimnaugh earned her master’s degree in sports administration from North Carolina State in 1994. The University of Evansville named Mimnaugh its head coach in 1993. Mimnaugh directed the last Purple Aces squad that played in the Midwestern Collegiate Conference and the first team that participated as a member of the Missouri Valley Conference. Following her time at Evansville, Mimnaugh relocated to San Luis Obispo and served as Karen Booker’s top assistant for the 1996-97 season. Aside from her coaching duties, she spearheaded the Mustangs’ weight training program and assisted with recruiting. Mimnaugh is a certified strength and conditioning specialist, credentialed through the National Strength and Conditioning Association and a member of the United States Weightlifting Federation. Mimnaugh, who competed with Athletes In Action in 1985, is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Page 15

Only the strong survive and the Cal Poly women’s basketball team is dedicated to strengthening their muscles to compete and be physical with their opponents. Each student-athlete is given an individualized workout to help sculpt them into fierce competitors. Weight training includes, Olympic lifts, use of slide boards, band work, and core training. The players also receive intense speed training which allow them to increase their quickness and improve cutting on the court during practice and competition.
Page 45
Explosiveness and Jump Training A new tool that the team uses to assist in increasing their vertical jumping capability is the Vertimax. With this piece of equipment the women’s team is exposed to multiple ways to increase resistance in training to translate into explosiveness on the court. With the use of the Vertimax, the team has seen an average of a 2 inch vertical increase.
Athletic Training Room
The Training room is a hub for players as they receive an assortment of treatment to help stay in top physical condition. With the help of our knowledgeable athletic training room staff and doctors, players are able to get immediate attention to injuries or ailments. Or, if players need a simple ice pack or ice bath they can go in to rest their bodies after a tough practice. Rehab is also a crucial part of college sports and our players and training room staff are dedicated to getting back on the court after any injuries.
Page 46
Beach Workouts
Cal Poly is fortunate to be surrounded by numerous beaches that allow for a challenging, unique, and fun workout for the team. During conditioning it is not unlikely that there may be a few visits to the beach for relay races, competitive runs, and creative quad-a-thons. Team work is always a must in many of the beach tasks and workouts. The women’s team enjoys the ability to get out of the gym for a change of scenery and demanding workout to help achieve their training goals.
Team Building
The team bond is essential to building a winning program and this team prides itself on being a family. Besides workouts to create team chemistry the team takes part in teambuilding activities that are fun, creative, and at times competitive. Players participate in activities that help them get to know each other better, communicate better, and lessons that they can translate on to the court as well as life. Page 47

~ LEARN BY DOING ~
Cal Poly’s guiding philosophy: Learn by doing. From row crops to computers, Cal Poly believes that the best way for someone to learn something is to do it. That’s been the school’s philosophy since it began. Walk around the Cal Poly campus and look into the classrooms, labs and lounges; you’ll find Cal Poly students reading, studying, and attending class. But that’s not all. You’ll find them working - rolling up their sleeves and getting their hands dirty. Career education at Cal Poly is taught within the framework of a thorough general education that helps students develop fully, not just as trained professionals, but as educated individuals. Curriculum is designed to teach students to think logically, judge critically and communicate clearly.

Big West Player of the Year
2009-10 & 2011-12 #12 Kristina Santiago Santiago earned Cal Poly Women’s Basketball’s first Big West Player of the Year award for her performance in the 2009-10 season. Santiago had a superb season in leading the Mustangs to an 18-10. She leads the conference in scoring (19.9) and steals per game (2.39), ranks second in rebounding (8.5) and field goal percentage (.547), while tying for second in double-doubles (9). In conference play, Santiago was even better, upping her already impressive numbers to 20.9 points, 10.0 rebounds, 53.6% shooting from the field and 2.75 steals per outing. The Santa Maria, Calif., native, who earned her second consecutive first team All-Big West nod, scored in double figures in every game this season, pulled down double digit rebounds in nine outings and has scored at least 10 points in 60 of her last 65 games. The 6-1 forward also won Big West Player of the Week honors on three occasions this season and established a new career-high with 34 points in the Mustangs’ overtime home win over Cal State Fullerton.
Santiago garnered her second Big West Player of Year award for her senior campaign in 2011-12. She returned from an ACL injury and had a standout campaign. She led the Mustangs to a regular season Big West Conference Championship with a 12-4 Big West record. She became the all-time leading scorer and rebounder in Cal Poly history as well as ranking 8th all time in Big West scoring history. She lead the league in points per game (23.1), rebounds (10.1), field goal percentage (.558), and posted 16 double doubles on the season. She put up double figures in all 26 games played except one and had a career high of 44 points while shooting 69.6 percent from the field against San Diego State.
2010-11 #11 Rachel Clancy
The second Cal Poly player to receive the Big West Player of the Year Honor in program history. Clancy received this year’s honor after leading Cal Poly to a share of its first-ever Big West regular season championship. The senior guard paces the Mustangs and ranks second in the league with a 16.3 scoring average and sixth in the conference in field goal percentage with a .448 clip. Clancy is even more impressive from three-point range, averaging a league-best 2.63 threepointers per game and shooting .397 from behind-thearc, good enough for fifth. Clancy finished the season ranked 18th in the nation for 3pt field goal percentage and 23rd for 3pt field goals made per game. In Cal Poly’s 74-65 win over UC Davis on Jan. 8, 2011, Clancy drained a career-high 31 points. The Limerick, Ireland, native, picked up All-Big West First Team honors, along with a Big West Player of the Week nod (12/20) after posting back-to-back 20-point performances. Page 66
Big West Conference Coach of the Year 1999-00 Co-Coach
2010-11 Faith Mimnaugh In her 14th season at the helm of Cal Poly, Mimnaugh led the Mustangs to a share of their first-ever Big West women’s basketball championship with a 12-4 conference mark. Cal Poly (16-11/12-4) owns the tiebreaker with cochampion UC Santa Barbara and was awarded the No. 1 seed in the ampm Big West Womens Basketball Tournament, which also assures itself of a spot in the postseason as it would receive the league’s automatic bid into the WNIT should it falter in the tournament. On February 24, with a 78-58 win over Cal State Fullerton, Mimnaugh became just the fifth league coach to eclipse 100 Big West victories. This is the second coach of the year honor for Mimnaugh, who was tabbed co-coach of the year with UC Santa Barbara coach Mark French for the 1999-2000 season.

President Jeffrey D. Armstrong Jeffrey D. Armstrong, Cal Poly’s ninth permanent president in the university’s 110-year history, believes strongly in Cal Poly’s renowned Learn by Doing philosophy. Armstrong views Cal Poly’s athletics program as an excellent example of Learn by Doing. “The lessons our student-athletes learn from their sports experience – character, work ethic, a sense of fairness, and leadership skills – are values Cal Poly works to impart in all of our classrooms and laboratories. They propel our students on their journey to adulthood and becoming good citizens and effective leaders.” Formerly the dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources and professor of Animal Science at Michigan State University, Armstrong began his duties as president at Cal Poly on Feb. 1, 2011. Before his tenure at Michigan State, Armstrong was head of the Department of Animal Sciences at Purdue University from 1997 to 2001. He served in various positions at North Carolina State University from 1986 through 1997. Raised on a beef cattle, swine and tobacco farm in western Kentucky, Armstrong attended Murray State University where he received a bachelor’s degree in agriculture in 1981. He received both a master’s (1984) and doctorate (1986) in physiology and endocrinology from North Carolina State University. Armstrong and his wife, Sharon, have two children. Jessica is a recent graduate of Michigan State University’s College of Human Medicine; Zack is a finance major, also at Michigan State.
Director of Athletics Don Oberhelman Donald J. Oberhelman was named Cal Poly’s Director of Athletics on March 17, 2011. Oberhelman came to Cal Poly after serving as the Chief Operating Officer and Senior Associate Athletic Director at San Diego State University. In that capacity, he was responsible for the daily operations of San Diego State’s intercollegiate athletics program, including budget planning, hiring and evaluation of coaches, facilities and event management. He also worked closely with San Diego State’s fundraising team. “Cal Poly has a great tradition of academic excellence and we want to continue to build on that tradition in everything we do,” Oberhelman said at the time of his hiring. “For many people, athletics is the first impression they have of the university. We must make sure these impressions are great ones. “We know our primary obligation is to develop our student-athletes. I want us to be leaders in graduation rates as well as in championships, but the receipt of a degree is not enough. It must be in a field of interest to the student-athlete and it must lead to a rewarding career,” he added. Prior to his tenure at San Diego State, Oberhelman served as the senior associate athletic director at Southern Mississippi (200207), the education coordinator for athletics at Texas A&M (1998-2002) and as a compliance assistant at Florida State (1995-1998). He earned his bachelor’s in business administration at Kansas State and his master’s in athletic administration at Florida State.
