Former Jackass star performs at Cal U tonight

Former Jackass Star Steve-O performs in Steele Hall tonight at 7 pm as part of the Student Activities Board “Funny Freaking Friday” event

As many students around the campus of California University of Pennsylvania already know, comedian Steve-O will be performing live in Steele Hall tonight at 7pm as part of the monthly Student Activities Board “Funny Freaking Friday” event. Many students most likely recognize this household name from his years on the hit MTV show “Jackass.” However, Steve-O is known for a lot more than just participating in crazy antics with stars such as Johnny Knoxville and Bam Margera.

After the first season of Jackass aired in 2000, Steve-O continued his rise as a stage performer, launching his “Steve-O Don’t Try This at Home Tour” in 2001. In October of 2002, Jackass: The Movie was released.

Following the release of the first Jackass film, Steve-O teamed up with former Jackass star Chris Pontius on the hit MTV show WILDBOYZ. That particular show lasted four years and was a proper transition into the second Jackass film, which was released in 2006.

In 2010, Steve-O and the Jackass cast returned for the third installment of the franchise. The stuntman also began to begin his career as a standup comedian at that time, performing at many prestigious venues in the Los Angeles and New York areas. He is currently on his “Steve-O’s Entirely Too Much Information Tour,” which has featured performances in North America, Australia and Europe.

Between his successful presence on social media and his comedic stylings on stage, Steve-O has begun to make a name for himself outside of just being a cast member on Jackass. He has become a successful comedian, mixing stunt work and comedy into his act.

Recent news to shape future of Cal U, Borough Search committee for new president, hazard mitigation plan announced

By Stetson Provance, News Editor At both student and faculty convocation, California University of Pennsylvania interim president Geraldine Jones was adamant that changes would continue to occur at the university. However, as long as the university made practical decisions, Jones was confident change could be a positive thing.

In recent weeks, the university has made two decisions it hopes result in a stable Cal U for years to come. The first of these decisions involves the search for the university’s next president. At Cal U’s Council of Trustees meeting on Sept. 16, the university took the next step toward finding a president when the board approved an 11-member search committee.

The committee includes the following; three trustees (committee chair James Davis, Michele Mandell and Thomas Uram), one executive (Mohamed Yamba, dean of the liberal arts department), two faculty members (Emily Sweitzer [who was elected to the committee by her colleagues] and APSCUF president Barbara Hess [who was selected by the faculty collective bargaining unit]), two non instructional personnel (AFSCME President George Josay and university police chief Ed McSheffery), one student elected by student government (Jessica Curry), one Cal U alum (Lynne Stout, president of the Alumni Association Board) and one president from a comparable university in the state system (Edinboro University President Julie Wollman).

Moving forward, according to PASHEE guidelines, the committee will define the expectations of presidential candidates, set a timeline for the search, screen potential candidates, and invite candidates for interviews. An independent consulting firm will also be selected by committee chair Davis to aid in the search. At the end of the process, the committee will submit the names of two candidates to the PASHEE Board of Governors. The cost of the search, specifically the money owed to the search committee, will be covered by funds from the state system reserve.

More recently, the university announced the second decision that will affect Cal U in both the immediate and distant future. A hazard mitigation plan (HMP) is currently being developed to better prepare Cal U for potential manmade or natural disasters. Christine Kindl, director of communication and public relations at the university, said this plan, which has been in the works since late 2013, is an update to the university’s previous hazard mitigation plan, which was approved in November of 2008. According to Kindl, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA)

requires universities to update their plans “typically about every five years.” According to the university, by having a FEMA-approved hazard mitigation plan, Cal U can protect itself against things such as severe weather, flooding, environmental hazards, and infectious disease outbreak.

The university also has a better chance of receiving state or federal funding for recovery or reconstruction projects.

The plan, which, according to Cal U’s website, was “developed through a formal process that included evaluating risks and assessing capabilities [of the university to deal with disasters]” used the latest data and information concerning disasters to determine areas where Cal U is vulnerable. According to research done by a Cal U Steering Committee, PASHEE, and Michael Baker International, a firm that assists municipalities and governments with projects like hazard mitigation plans, Cal U’s hazard vulnerabilities are as follows (in order from most likely to cause a hazard to least likely to cause a hazard): winter storms, floods and ice jams, environmental hazards, tornados/wind storms, and finally pandemics and infectious diseases.

Some structural and material changes that are common in most HMPs are improved sprinkler systems, flood proofing and fireproofing of buildings, installation and improvements of backup systems such as generators, installation of surge and lighting protection devices, continued maintenance of roads, sidewalks, and buildings and improved warning systems.

Cal U’s plan, specifically, includes a wide range of actions.

To address flood concerns, Cal U will both relocate buildings and facilities out of the floodplain and elevate buildings in flood-prone areas, as was done with Eberly Hall and the Kara Alumni House. Buildings will also be evaluated for their vulnerability to winter storms and power outages.

In conjunction with these assessments, contingency plans have also been made in the event said hazards occur. Plans have also been developed to deal with transportation accidents on roadways, rail lines, and the riverfront.

Other elements of the HMP include enhanced opportunities for faculty, staff, and students to learn appropriate responses to terrorism, and increasing the amounts of signs at Roadman Park and the SAI Farm to make the area easier to locate.

Uncle Vinny is our resident super-super-super senior, and he’s currently finishing up his degree in Graphics and Multimedia. He joined us in the spring of 2014 while he was still a commuter, and got involved by visiting his friends and our former DJs, the Gorgon Twins, during their show. He has since become one of our most well rounded DJs, with a musical taste so eclectic that even in college radio he is somewhat of an anomaly (Seriously, who in their right mind puts Ke$sha and Slayer together?!) When not trying to cram as many songs as he can into a two hour time-span with his co-host DJ Sofro on the Thunder Rawdge (It’s 116 by the way), Vinny can been found playing Hearthstone, Magic: The Gathering, and attending concerts. His top three favorites shows that he’s been to include: The Mountain Goats, Deathgrips, and Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

CAL TIMES ALBUMS OF THE WEEK:

Grace & Tony and Fetty Wap

Grace and Tony are a married duo who both grew up in Tennessee. They did not know each other growing up, but when they met they did something amazing. Grace had strong bluegrass roots while Tony was in between punk bands. They got together to work on music and ended up forming a genre that they would later call “punkgrass.” With this new style of music, they ended up releasing an EP followed by their first full length studio album “November.” Both their EP and LP were beautifully crafted with hauntingly harmonic vocals, intense banjo picking, tight orchestral pieces and well played guitar parts. I expected a similar sound with this new album having been released just a week ago, but was happy to find that it was a little different than expected.

“Phantasmagoric” is a ten track album. Each song was well written. You could tell that Grace and Tony took their time with this album. They are familiar with story-telling through music and it is apparent when giving this album a listen. As far as content that each song provides, the album is quite grim. Each song has a specific topic and includes both historic and fictional tales. The album has been considered to fall under the genre of “southern gothic,” which is more commonly referred to as a literature genre, though some musicians have also dabbled in it.

Fetty Wap-Fetty Wap

Willie Maxwell, better known by his stage name Fetty Wap, has been in the news recently for more than one reason. Last Friday, his first, full length studio album was released. The following day he found himself hospitalized after a motorcycle accident. Luckily for him, he suffered only the minor injury of a broken leg and will be back on his feet in no time. Fetty is a new, up and coming rapper in the industry that made a big splash with his first single, “Trap Queen.” Aside from “Trap Queen,” four other singles were released prior to the album. These singles flooded the radio waves and put Fetty Wap in the limelight, making him one of the most successful of his class for the XXL Magazine’s Freshman of the Year.

The self-titled album has solid hits from start to finish. It shows off both the rapping and singing ability of Fetty. After a while, the songs start to blend together. For a rap album, it is important to be consistent with your sound, but this album seems like it’s the same song over and over again. Heavy trap influenced instrumental followed by rap verses and the typical Fetty Wap singing hook can be heard on any song. I think this is a great start to Fetty Wap’s career and even after the four pre-released singles, I feel there will be more popular songs to reach the top of the charts off of this album.

Fetty is young and his career is even younger. I expect him to continue making solid hits with a similar style and will eventually booking a full length tour. For the time being, sit back and let more Fetty come your way.

Stunning and Brave

South Park’s fall premiere tackled the war on poltical correctness

By Ellen Boyle On September 16, South Park premiered the first episode of its nineteenth season. Creators Trey Parker and Matt Stone proved that they are still on top of the most pressing, controversial, and relevant topics of today’s society. An episode entitled, “Stunning and Brave,” satirically tackled the war on political correctness and stirred controversy for those who advocate for the elimination of offensive language.

Those who promote political correctness know that there are details that factor into why certain language is offensive.

It often promotes gender stereotypes, racial stereotypes, and generally discriminates against marginalized groups.

The war on political correctness is primarily fought between two groups of people. Advocates for political correctness are typically college-aged students.

This is because these students were born in an era where segregation was known to be over and sexism, racism, and other forms of discrimination were no longer seen to be the norm. Whether or not racism and sexism still greatly exists in our nation is another article for another day. However, because these students were born at that time, the majority grew up learning that acceptance of all people was expected and generally have a progressive mindset. Thus, when confronted with differing mentalities they encourage political correctness to further acceptance and end discrimination of all kinds. Fighting back on the other side of the war are primarily comedians. Comedians have been the most outspoken in the criticism of political correctness saying instead that kids are being oversensitive.

Several well-known, respected comedians have refused to play at colleges because too many of the students complain that their jokes are politically incorrect and offensive.

Among these comedians are Jerry Seinfeld, Larry the Cable Guy, Chris Rock, and Bill Maher. The war on political correctness has begun to take an aggressive tone. Many of those fighting for political correctness have confronted criticism using harsh names and insults towards those who disagree. While comedians have consistently mocked those who speak out against their envelope-pushing jokes.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone certainly joined the side of fellow comedians in pointing out the flaws of the “social justice warriors.” While they did attempt to provide defense of political correctness, their message was clear. In the episode “Stunning and Brave,” political correctness has entered South Park, Colorado in the form of a white “frat bro” named PC Principal. While PC Principal disapproves of labeling, he is quick to label those around him as bigots.

While he fights against micro aggressions toward communities that have been discriminated against, he aggressively beats Cartman for using the term “spokesman” instead of “spokesperson.” In his spare time, PC Principal drinks excessively while surrounding himself with only those who also identify as PC. The episode is centered around PC Principal and Kyle’s feud on whether or not Caitlyn Jenner is a hero, a topic that dominated social media after she was nominated and won an ESPY. PC Principal punishes Kyle for saying that Caitlyn Jenner is not a hero and condemns Kyle for his offensive discrimination against the transgender community and lack of social acceptance. Kyle then wakes up one morning to find pigs in his room with the word “Biggit” painted on them and male genitals drawn on his face. PC Principal defends himself saying that he checked Kyle’s privilege. Further commentary on political correctness is offered when Randy accidentally gets roped in to PC Principal’s friend group, which resembles a group of “frat bro’s.” Randy spends his nights drinking and his mornings lecturing others about political correctness.

As he is trying to hold in regurgitation from his hangover he is regurgitating the political correctness script to his son.

The episode features much of the recited language and statements used by those who fight for political correctness.

This involves phrases such as, “defending marginalized communities from systems of oppression,” the term “white privilege,” and “male privilege.” Much of the hazing the PC frat bros have pledges do is “checking someone’s privilege.”

Though it is hard to believe, the episode is not meant to mock those who choose to stand up for discriminated genders, races, and other groups that have been oppressed.

I consider myself someone who pushes people to be politically correct and advocate for not only social awareness but also social acceptance. However, what the episode sought to prove is the aggressive nature the war on political correctness has acquired has not created acceptance but silence. To avoid being beaten or given detentions, Cartman and Kyle decide to just keep their mouths shut. The dialogue is frozen and the main goal of political correctness, which is progress, is stopped. Another point the creators attempt to make is that social justice warriors disregard Caitlyn Jenner’s past flaws because she now represents a widely discriminated community.

They applaud her for her bravery in publicly coming out and bringing attention to the issues and discrimination faced by the transgender community. Kyle’s defense as why he does not consider Caitlyn to be a hero is because Kyle did not like Bruce Jenner as a person and has no inclination to like PHOTO: GOOGLE Caitlyn either. This is a valid point as Bruce made his life very public through reality television, but Kyle, and others who share this viewpoint, are immediately labeled as bigots for not hailing Caitlyn Jenner as a hero. Parker and Stone are trying to bring to light another troubling problem of the political correctness movement. Many of those standing up for marginalized groups do it to feed their own egos, not necessarily because they care about those people. PC Principal is meant to resemble the “social justice warrior” that does nothing for African Americans, women, Hispanics, or other minority groups. Yet, he points out problematic language and hails himself for his heroism.

Parker and Stone brought about great points to the strong and growing community that advocate for political correctness. They pointed out that the increasingly aggressive nature toward those who do not obey could often stop progress because it stops the dialogue. They also make the point that being a part of a discriminated community does not make one invincible to other flaws. I do hope to see people continue to challenge those to be culturally sensitive, but as opposition has pointed out, it is important to find a balance and not be oversensitive. Advocating for political correctness, standing up in opposition to discrimination, and challenging gender stereotypes is how our country will continue to move forward. However, to keep the momentum, the movement cannot be antagonistic and must be fueled by honest people.

Is Donald Trump’s rhetoric getting out of hand?

While I still do not grasp the continued positive polling numbers for Donald Trump, he had a hard time with his rhetoric during a rally this past week.

What am I talking about? An audience member from the crowd got up and decided to say something about radical Islam. Bringing up the same deal that Trump first brought up when Obama ran for his first election, he said President Obama is not even an American. Despite this idea being cleared as simply a myth, Trump did not disagree with him.

The participant then said something derogatory about radical Islam, and unfortunately was unable to make the distinction between radical Islam (i.e., ISIS, other terror groups) and peaceful, Muslim human beings who are against the

violent agendas of the terror groups. Then he equated the false idea that Barack Obama is a Muslim, and shared it with the audience.

This is where the truthfulness of Donald Trump, the supposed “honest man” virtue he proclaimed himself on 60 Minutes this week (9/27), stopped short.

He did not correct the man. He let it go, and let all those people continue believing in a lie. Not a white lie, but a filthy lie that stops some antiObama groups from supporting the president of the United States and his American agenda.

You know what? I am ashamed of it. It made me briefly flash back to my middle school years when I supported the GOP, their views on values, and the “idea” of lowering taxes for the middle and upper classes, as well as supposedly decreasing the country’s deficit.

As I have already proclaimed many times in this

publication: Mr. Trump, please don’t let people believe that. Do not let America be anti-religion.

Anyway, back to Trump. After basically not communicating anything to the gentleman, Trump said he is “going to be looking into a lot of different things…a lot of people are saying a lot bad things are happening out there.” Happening out where? Trump fluffed the question off, in this sense showing his inability to respond to a comment like the aforementioned one.

I will end with this. Mr. Trump, are you able to separate fact from fiction? And secondly, do you really have any idea how you will fight terrorist groups, whether they are ISIS, Neo-Nazi, or any other terror group out there?

More influential than God? Kanye Takes Hubris to a Higher Level

Today’s celebrities may have a tougher job than ever before. With technology revolutionized in this modern day era, the big names in entertainment are being pushed out and forgotten as quickly as the new names come in. With Youtube, Facebook, Twitter and other social media outlets, finding the next big name has become as easy as clicking the Google icon. In order for the new names to transition to great names, to remembered names, they have to bring something to the table that nobody has seen before.

Kanye West is trying hard to not be another name that is forgotten. His attempt to catapult his name into infamy has been working well with his new “I AM a God” comments that have been retweeted and repeated by most of fans and most people that own a computer.

He claims that he is more influential than God and compares himself to Jesus by

saying “people hate me like they hated Jesus yet they worship me”. He also tweeted “ I Am Yeezus! Ppl respect me I am ur God”.

So since Kanye will never be God, this publicity stunt is brilliant only in one way… people will remember him and he will not be pushed out by the next person who can sing a cover of Sam Smith or one who can rap a Wiz Khalifia song using auto tune. In the way of only public view he may actually not be wrong in the comment of being as influential as a god. Kanye West has a net worth of around 145 million dollars (celebritynetworth.com). How does someone come to have made that much money by picking up a microphone? The celebrity only makes money because of their fans. If people are influenced enough to pay more to hear what he has to say than any other celebrity, then he may have a point. But since the only

credibility he has is in entertainment then that can and will only make him a “god” in entertainment. Anybody who can make that much money by using the same words as rhymes definitely has people on a string.

For anybody that takes this as a personal offense to Christianity or other religion that has a god it should not simply be worth your effort to think he actually claims to be greater than the Almighty God. As he said people hate him like they hated Jesus. Is OxyContin suitable for children?

Is OxyContin suitable for children ages 11 to 16 years of age? This is the central question, and the answers are pretty one-sided. The answer is no, for fear of early addiction the moment treatment is administered.

Yet, with all the online articles and information on drug/prescription use, we get lost in a vast field of strong opinions and arguments over this matter.

A single dose of OxyContin greater than 40mg is used only for patients that are considered opioid tolerant. An opioid-tolerant patient receives at least 60mg of OxyContin for one week or longer, with patient tolerance and history of experience with the drug prior such as addiction, abuse, and misuse being taken into effect by a healthcare professional who is knowledgeable in the use and effects of opioid-based drugs.

The greatest cause leading to opioid addiction and harm, especially in children and adolescence, depends upon how the drug is taken from the start. Opioid-based drugs such as OxyContin, are Class II modified-release narcotics, meaning they must be taken orally and swallowed whole to

last over an extended period of time, taken every twelve hours. Chewing, crushing, or breaking up a single OxyContin, causes uncontrolled delivery, leading to eventual overdose and death. This can be a problem for children, because as adults, we can swallow larger-sized medication more easily than a developing and growing child, so for a child not to choke, chewing the pill would make sense, but this can lead to adverse effects mentioned above.

A doctor needs to assess any GI disorders to determine if the patient is fit for OxyContin.

Opioids are not “poison,” they are a more powerful drug that deems regular monitoring and communication between doctors and patients.

A doctor or other health care professional is to determine the necessary steps to take when administering the OxyContin from the beginning and to monitor the effects on the patient, primarily for respiratory depression and hypotensive effects.

The patients’ healthcare professional is to have discretion of the situation. Children who begin OxyContin therapy with no history of opioid use,

are given a small 10mg amount to determine what the affects will be. When treatment is over, the doctor will gradually ween the patient off the drug with smaller and smaller doses.

Dependency and addiction in younger patients is determined from the beginning with the doctor. It is the physician’s decision whether or not treatment of OxyContin therapy is suitable to the diagnoses of the patient, whether the patient feels pain from an ache or is diagnosed with a terminal condition, and if administered, it is that doctor’s responsibility to monitor and track patient reactions. But most importantly, it’s the patient’s responsibility to communicate with the doctor on how they’re feeling.

If a patient feels dependent upon the medication, it is there responsibility to seek help from their doctor and for the doctor to keep an eye on any addiction behavior. It is not the fault of the FDA for the cause of young patients becoming addicted in the long run, it is the relationship and communication between patients and their doctors.

Cal U twirlers hard work pays off in the Fall

By Rachael McKriger Cal Times Contributor Is twirling a baton classified as a sport? For many people, it is merely considered a hobby or extracurricular activity.

However for competitive twirlers, it is a whole different story. The three twirlers for the Cal U marching band believe it certainly is a sport. They incorporate flexibility and components of gymnastics and dance in their routines.

To them, it takes a lot of practice, work, sweat, and time.

The three twirlers that Cal U students see during the halftime marching band shows are senior Adriene Walls, junior Katie Karlic, and freshman Megan Teres. The three girls are close friends and it shows in their chemistry during the routine. “Not only do we all get along really well, but we have even coordinated some exchanges within the show together. Overall, it’s a good environment,” said Karlic.

The three girls are coached by Pam Maierhofer and have their practices on Wednesdays and Fridays. During their practices, the three girls do plenty of stretching to build flexibility for their twirling. “We also have to work on perfecting our tricks and keeping our bodies fit,” Walls said. They credit much of their success during the shows to coach Maierhofer. “If you have an instructor like Coach Pam that knows what they are talking about, you will learn the proper techniques for tricks,” said Karlic.

The twirlers have all been twirling since they were young, but stepping on the field during a halftime show has been a whirlwind experience for them. Teres, who is learning all about the experience since she is a freshman, said that it is “very exciting to have a large crowd that supports you. I can’t wait to twirl for three more years.” Karlic, who after this season has one year left in her twirling college career, says it’s spectacular to show the student body what twirling is all about. However for Walls, who’s college twirling journey will come to a close after this season, said what she’ll miss most is “the incredible people I have met and performing.

I will cherish the many memories as I move on to the next phase of my life.”

One part of the show that amazes people during their show is the fire batons. All three twirlers said that it really isn’t as scary as it looks, but more simply put in the words

Megan Teres, however, hasn’t taken too much of Walls’ ease with the fire twirling. “I love twirling fire at home games because it is very exciting to have the crowd cheering you on. Even though twirling fire is exciting, I’m still worried about catching my hair on fire.”

Vulcan Cross Country teams off to solid start

By Matt Hagy Sports Editor Aaron Dinzeo established himself as one of the most decorated cross country athletes Cal U has ever seen. He compiled a large set of awards and laurels both on and off the cross country course that no other runner in Vulcan history can say they have accomplished. But now Dinzeo is graduated.

It was a day that the program dreaded but now entering the 2015 season, the Vulcans had to move forward without Dinzeo. It has not been easy replacing an individual runner like Dinzeo who could dominate in any race, but this Vulcan Men’s Cross Country team has become stronger together and has set off on a decent start to the season.

California has competed in three events so far and as a team they recently won the Stockton Osprey Open in New Jersey and saw one of their runners win his first individual title of his career.

Senior Morgan Huegel claimed the race by just over one second with a time of 26 minutes, 32.68 seconds. This win for Huegel was good enough to help garner him PSAC Cross Country athlete of the week honors which was last done by Aaron Dinzeo. Huegel ran with Dinzeo for his first three seasons at Cal and now is beginning to establish himself as one of the top runners in the PSAC. In the Osprey Open, Cal claimed the top four spots in the race with Gabe Rees, Neftali Jimenez, and Corbin Padgett rounding out those spots. This shows the core that this team has this season as they look to finish the season strong with a meet at Slippery Rock on October 10th and then the

PSAC championships two weeks later.

The Vulcans look to improve on a fifth place finish from last season at the PSAC Championships and look to have the team to accomplish that this season. Cal’s women’s Cross Country team also has seen impressive individual performances in this 2015 season as well. The team is led by Junior Julie Friend and also redshirt Senior Alex Zanella who missed last season with an injury. In three meets, the team has won the overall title twice and Friend has won the individual title at those two races and also finished second at the St. Vincent Invitational.

Friend is picking up right where she left off in her breakout sophomore season after qualifying for

the NCAA championships last season.

The last person to qualify at NCAA championships for the Vulcan women’s cross country team was Zanella a year before that. Zanella looks to finish her Vulcan career strong and presents a dynamic duo with Friend for the rest of the races to close out the season. The women’s team finished 12th at PSAC championships a year ago and now with Zanella back in the frame, the team looks stronger than last season. The Cross Country schedule is entering its final months and seeing the results so far from both teams, it should be an exciting fight to the finish for Vulcans Cross Country.

Cal U Men’s Soccer knocks off Bloomsburg in overtime

Facing a two-goal deficit early in the second half, the Vulcans scored in the 102nd minute during the second overtime to outlast Bloomsburg for a 4-3 victory in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday afternoon. With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men’s soccer team improves to 4-3 overall with a 2-2 record in league play. Meanwhile, the Huskies drop to 7-2 overall with a 4-2 mark in conference action. The Vulcans recorded the first goal of the contest when freshman Eric Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) posted his second goal of the season off an assist from

senior Lubos Kubik (Pardubice, Czech Republic/Roosevelt (Iowa)). Bloomsburg quickly responded with goals at the 23:14-mark and in the 29th minute to take a 2-1 lead.

Bloomsburg started the second half with a goal at the 45:14-mark from Austin Transue, his second of the game, to increase the lead to 3-1. Cal U responded in the 69th minute with a goal from freshman Mike Cummings (McDonald, Pa./West Allegheny) off an assist from senior Jesse Scheirer (Venitia, Pa./Peters Township) before Scheirer tied the game at 3-3 with an unassisted goal at the 81:22-mark. The Huskies took both of the shots

attempted in the first overtime period. The Vulcans struck early in the second overtime period during the 102nd minute off the foot of Campbell, which was his second of the game, to claim the victory. Freshman goalkeeper Lucas Exner (Horstmar, Germany/Pascal-Gymnasium) posted five saves in the win. Cal U held a slim 19-17 advantage in shots, while each team tallied five corner kicks. The Vulcans return to action this weekend as they travel to East Striudsburg and then return home for a Sunday Contest against Davis & Elkins.

Vulcan football survives road upset bid from Edinboro

By Danny Beeck Cal Times Contributor Traveling up interstate 79 for a matchup between two familiar foes, the California Vulcans took on the Edinboro Fighting Scots in a PSAC West showdown. The challenge of not having junior Garry Brown in the lineup did not stop the Vulcans from getting a win last week, improving to 2-1, but this week he was back in action.

With the opening kickoff going to the Scots, the defense took the field first, trying to continue their dominance.

After a defensive stand, Edinboro sent Austin Reese back to punt. When the ball was snapped, a host of Vulcans swarmed and Luke Smorey tipped the ball, giving his offense prime field position.

Marching down the field in five plays, going 30 yards, John Franklin III scored from a yard out to make it three consecutive games with a running touchdown to open the game. Just when it looked like yet another penalty would hurt California on defense, a costly fumble gave the Vulcans the ball again. John Franklin III would put the team on his back yet again, scoring from one yard out to put the Vulcans up 13-0. Just when the quarter was coming to a close, however, the Scots came up big forcing James Harris into his own end zone, putting two points on the board for Edinboro. When the second quarter began, the Vulcans saw themselves in control.

Being up 13-2 Coach Keller wanted to put pressure on Edinboro and see how the Scots reacted. A short drive led sophomore William Brazill to kicking a 34-yard field goal giving them a 16-2 lead. On the ensuing possession, slick running from Ja’maal Eveillard allowed the Scots to score on a two-yard touch pass from Jake Sisson making the score 16-9. Halftime allowed for both teams to catch

Starting to get Garry Brown going seemed like a must after he only had one catch in the first half and during the first drive, he had four, along with a 4-yard touchdown catch. James Harris was also heating up after a measly 43 yards in the air during the first half.

The Vulcans then took a step back as a 27-yard pass from Jake Sisson ends up in the awaiting arms of Darren Massey to make the score 30-16. Massey again would be the target for Sisson as an 11-yard touchdown pass makes it 30-23 to close out the 3rd quarter. California put some distance between them and the Scots yet again when John Franklin III capped an 11-play, 80 yard drive with 6 more points, counting Brazills kick making it 3723. Edinboro would not quit though, putting 7 more

points on the board with 11 minutes left in the game. California would then shut down the Scots with Aaron Terry getting another game sealing interception with 4:53 left in the game. California won its PSAC West Division opener with a score of 37-30 in an impressive fashion. John Franklin III went off for a career high 196 yards rushing with three touchdowns to his name.

James Harris also picked up his game in the second half, ending with 238 yards and two touchdowns. The impressive team victory improved the Vulcans to 3-1 and are now second in the west behind Clarion. The Vulcans now look to their next opponent; the Seton Hill Griffins who are coming off a major upset win over Slippery Rock the week before. Seton Hill has never defeated Cal before and their next chance is tomorrow at 1 p.m. from Adamson Stadium.

Cal Times Athlete Spotlight Tyler Robinson, Men’s Golfer

Class: Junior Major: Professional Golf Management Hometown: Annapolis, Maryland High School: Broadneck Robinson started the fall golf schedule red hot with a pair of first-place finishes. His performance garnered him PSAC Golfer of the week honors which had not been done by a Cal U golfer since Fall 2013. Robinson currently leads the team with a scoring average of 73.6 strokes through the first four events this season. That is currently a five-stroke improvement from his first season as a Vulcan after transferring from Scottsdale Community College.
