Pleas arise for action after Parkland school shooting By Rachael McKriger, Editor-In-Chief KRI6014@calu.edu School shootings have become all-too common for schools in the United States. Another instance of mass genocide occurred on Feb. 14 at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, where 17 students and staff members were killed. A total of 14 non-fatal injuries were reported. The alleged shooter is 19-year-old Nikolas Jacob Cruz. Cruz allegedly used an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle and carried multiple magazines. Since the shooting, there have been firm cries against the current policies in place for gun rights. Many students have marched out of school, staged peaceful protests and called on government to take action. It’s not just students that are taking action as well. On Feb. 28, DICK’s Sporting Goods announced that they will not continue to sell automatic assault-style guns. “When we saw what happened in Parkland, we were so disturbed and upset,” Edward Stack, the chief executive of DICK’s, said. “We love these kids and their rallying cry, ‘enough is enough.’ It got to us. We’re going to take a stand and step up and tell people our view and, hopefully, bring people along into the conversation.” Dick’s Sporting Goods is following the footsteps of Walmart, which stopped selling high-powered rifles in 2015. An 18-year-old student named Emma Gonzalez has taken headlines by storm since the shooting, speaking at different rallies and becoming a public figure and supporter of stricter gun laws. She recently had an essay published in Harper’s Bazaar, titled “Parkland Student Emma González Opens Up About Her Fight for Gun Control.” “At the end of the day, we don’t want people to have their guns taken away,” Gonzalez wrote. “We just want the people to be more responsible. You don’t drive a NASCAR on the street, no matter how fun it might be, just like you don’t need an AR-15 to protect yourself when walking home at night.” She also called out opposing adult leaders, writing, “Adults like us when we have strong test scores, but they hate us when we have strong opinions.” Gonzalez also tackled the issue of teachers being armed

Photo of students from Maryland attending a rally in opposition to the NRA. Photo courtesy of the Associated Press. with guns — or any type of weapon. President Donald Trump recently said that teachers that are armed should receive “a bonus.” “Teachers do not need to be armed with guns to protect their classes, they need to be armed with a solid education in order to teach their classes,” Gonzalez said. “That’s the only thing that needs to be in their job description. People say metal detectors would help. Tell that to the kids who already have metal detectors at school and are still victims of gun violence. If you want to help arm the schools, arm them with school supplies, books, therapists, things they actually need and can make use of.” The NRA, who has been under rapid scrutiny since the event took place, has lost endorsement and partnership deals from companies. Among those to cut ties with the

NRA include FedEx, Delta Air Lines, Hertz, MetLife, United Airlines and many others. The NRA responded, saying that severing ties was “civic cowardice.” “Let it be absolutely clear. The loss of a discount will neither scare nor distract one single NRA member from our mission to stand and defend the individual freedoms that have always made America the greatest nation in the world,” the NRA said in a statement. The United States has been in a hectic debate about gun rights and laws for many years now. The Parkland shooting isn’t the first time this issue has been brought up, as there have been many school shootings to precede the recent Florida shooting. Many athletes, celebrities and public figures have called for more companies to sever ties with the NRA.

PA-18 Candidates race for special US House seat By Cameron King, Contributor KIN3098@calu.edu The resignation of Pennsylvania Congressman Tim Murphy, a republican, late last year sparked a viscous race for both Democrats and Republicans to rush in filing the empty seat lying in Pennsylvania’s 18th Congressional District. The candidates, sitting 39th District State Representative Rick Saccone, republican, and former federal prosecutor Conor Lamb, a democrat, have had all but a clean and civil charge towards the vacancy since November of last year. Saccone, priding himself in his military work as an United States Air Force Officer acquiring counter-intelligence on North Korea, working on tax and regulatory reform during his time in the Statehouse and his record on helping fight the worsening opioid epidemic in his district, has been campaigning actively since the Republican Party nominated him on Nov. 11, 2017. Lamb, as a prosecutor, lead many cases regarding opioid-related deaths, gun trafficking and violent crime, all the while serving in the United States Marine Corps ending his active duty in 2013. He has been campaigning actively since the Democratic Party nominated him shortly after Saccone last November as well. The Special Election race has garnered national media attention and the attention of both President Donald J. Trump and Vice President Michael Pence, as they have both actively endorsed and campaigned for Rick Saccone in previous and upcoming weeks. Like all other Special Election races seen nationwide in months past, some are regarding the PA-18 race as a testament of the Trump presidency, reflecting on his policies in a state that went red for the president in 2016, the first time since 1988. The special election also has increased

The shaded area above is the Pennsylvania 18th district which will elect either Conor Lamb or Rick Saccone. symbolic quality followed by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court’s decision to redraw the state’s Congressional boundaries, following a decade of bipartisan gerrymandering, as it is highly likely that both candidates, regardless of incumbency, will fall outside of district lines in newly drawn maps set forth by the Court. Both candidates and their associated political

action committees have acted fiercely in attacking one another, claiming loyalty to unjust political causes or aged political leadership. The special election will take place on March 13, 2018, in the 18th District, and there is no doubt that a lot of eyes will be watching closely in hopes to fill not just a House seat vacancy, but pieces of Presidential and political party legacies.

Fergie’s National Anthem Performance By Tom Caton, Staff Writer CAT7395@calu.edu Former Black Eyed Peas artist Fergie performed the National Anthem at the 67th NBA All-Star Game at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, CA on Feb. 18, 2018. The audience in attendance that night and the audience watching at home had mixed emotions about her performance. Also, her performance went viral all over the Internet and social media shortly after she turned her microphone off and left the Staples Center. Fergie was given praise and criticized for her performance, but she was mostly slammed for the performance. Many who watched it stated how horribly she performed. According to People Magazine, Fergie stated she “was honored and proud to perform the National Anthem and I wanted to try something special for the NBA.” The singer was dragged on social media for her version of the Star Spangled Banner, even by those who acknowledge how incredibly difficult it is to sing and memorize this song. If you did not watch Fergie’s rendition, it is uploaded on YouTube and almost every other website imaginable. Currently, there are already more than 17.7 million views of the video on YouTube! Many other celebrities were in attendance at the game that night, one of them being Jimmy Kimmel whose reaction was caught on camera. During his late-night talk show on Tuesday February 20, he explained his grinning response. He clarified he did not even realize his reaction was being filmed. Kimmel stated during his opening monologue, “I feel like I need to address something that happened Sunday night at the NBA All-Star Game. I was at the game with my son Kevin, and somehow, I became a part of the National Anthem fiasco.” Kimmel continued stating “Fergie gave an unusually sultry version of our National Anthem.” Kimmel also recalled how he had received

Photo of Fergie courtesy of Getty Images. multiple messages on his cell phone after he appeared on television after Fergie’s performance. Kimmel continued on, “I didn’t realize I was on camera—but then my phone started buzzing with text after text and I was like…oh, I must have been on camera.” However, Fergie apologized after her rendition of the National Anthem went wrong. She simply wanted to try and sing it in a slower, jazzier version. According to NationalPublicRadio.inc, Fergie vocalized in a statement “I’m a risk taker artistically, but clearly this rendition didn’t strike the intended tone. I love this country and honestly tried my best.” There were viewers who stated Fergie actually did good singing our National Anthem. But

unfortunately, most of the feedback she received was negative. She was even criticized harshly for taking a different and unusual approach when stepping up to the microphone moments before the music began to play. Overall, I watched her performance and to be honest, it was not the absolute best rendition of the Star Spangled Banner, but Fergie gave a valiant effort. That is what really matters in my perspective. The National Anthem is tough to sing no matter what situation. Whether you are trying to sing it in front of your pet at home or singing in front of a worldwide audience, it is a difficult song to maneuver properly.

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever By Jeromy Mackey, Staff Writer MAC3503@calu.edu Although Oscar buzz continues to mount, there is one movie upstaging the biggest night in Hollywood. Marvel’s Black Panther is the studio’s most commercially and critically successful film they have ever produced. With a Rotten Tomatoes score of 97 percent and a Metacritc aggregate of 88/100, Black Panther is the highest rated movie to be produced by Marvel. It also has the second most successful domestic four day opening at the box office ever at $242 million, second only to The Force Awakens. As of this writing, the movie has grossed over $700 million worldwide, and is still obliterating the competition in ticket sales. The movie distinguishes itself from its predecessors in many ways. First, the studio made all the right choices in giving this film to gifted director Ryan Coogler. A major studio has finally realized that a movie about a black superhero and celebrating Afrofuturistic culture should be produced by an almost entirely black crew and cast. The passion and authenticity of creating and expressing the fictional nation of Wakanda, a nation where black men and women are at the heights of innovation and technology, is apparent throughout the entire film. Hopefully the many successes of this film will reveal to the the other major publishers that authentic black cinema is not only wanted, but desperately needed in the mainstream. Already viral videos of black celebrities, politicians, athletes and fans doing the Wakandan salute are being spread across the internet. No longer will children desiring an African American superhero to look up to have to settle for weak supporting roles like Falcon and War Machine. They have the future of the genre itself to be inspired by, as no superhero thus far has had the emotional breadth as King T’Challa. Second, we finally have a solution to the infamous Marvel villain curse in Michael B. Jordan’s incredible performance as Killmonger, an outsider with a mysterious vendetta against the kings of Wakanda. Not only is Killmonger the first good Marvel villain since Loki in The Avengers, he is one of the most

sympathetic in an important way. He represents the most extreme solution to the real problem of global black disempowerment. No one approves of his methods, but his motivations bring many real and relevant issues to everyone contributing to the $700 million global gross. He’s neither preach-y nor condescending; he simply represents the rage and frustrations that so many people have rightfully felt in the face of systemic racial oppression. This movie exceeds the expectations critics and viewers have based on the usually shallow but entertaining previous Marvel films.

It gave us entertainment as well, but didn’t falter on its political and emotional scope. It’s the boldest and brightest superhero film yet, and has become the new industry standard. As the veterans of the MCU such as Captain America and Iron Man slowly begin to wane their involvement, a new king has stepped up to take their place. In the hands of Chadwick Boseman and King T’Challa, the ever-popular genre has been refreshed and remolded forever. With fresh faces and a heightened expectation for these films, the future of the studio may just exceed its incredible past. Wakanda Forever.

The Bachelor: Hometown Dates Recap By Jessica Crosson, Entertainment Editor CRO8908@calu.edu *This article contains spoilers regarding the hometown episode of ‘The Bachelor’* This season of ‘The Bachelor’ is quickly coming to a close as hometown dates concluded after last week’s episode. This season Arie visited the homes of Kendall in California, Lauren B in Virginia, Becca K in Minnesota, and Tia in Arkansas. Arie has been a controversial bachelor from the beginning due to the fact he seemed to come completely out of nowhere when he was announced as the next bachelor and he is older than most of the men who take on the role of the bachelor. This season has had its fill of crazy women and dramatic moments but it is quickly coming down to the final rose. During his hometown visits Arie was greeted by each of the remaining four women’s families who all expressed their concerns for their daughters when it came down to being engaged at the end of the show. Kendall’s hometown was the first location up on Arie’s

Six Word Stories Wr itten By Students for your Enter tainment

list. Their date started out with Kendall introducing Arie to all of her taxidermy animals which she keeps in a very large Cabella looking storage unit. After they got done playing with stuffed mice, they went to Kendall’s home to meet her family. Every member of her family, including Kendall, expressed concern that she may not be ready to come out of this show engaged and they were not sure if she would be able to get to that point by the time the show ended. Arie would later pull her aside at the rose ceremony to address her on those concerns. The second hometown date was in Minnesota to visit Becca K’s family. Their date began with a trip to the apple orchard where they enjoyed each other’s company while picking apples they would later dip in caramel, which was a very cute date. Her family gave the stereotypical “if you hurt my daughter I will find you speech” and that was the most notable part of that night. The third date belonged to Tia who resides in Arkansas. Tia thought she had the key to Arie’s heart when she

took him racing during her hometown date. Her family reacted in the same way Becca K’s family did. Later in the episode it would turn out Arie’s feelings for Tia were not as strong as hers were for him and she did not receive a rose during the rose ceremony. They shared a very emotional goodbye before Tia got in the van and headed back to Arkansas. The final date was in beautiful Virginia Beach where Arie was overjoyed to be getting to meet Lauren B’s family. Their date began with them horseback riding on the beach right along the water’s edge which is quite possibly the most iconic romantic hometown date I have ever seen. It was a very classic romantic date. Her family seemed to be the most supportive our Lauren B’s romantic journey with Arie but clearly voiced that they wanted her to be careful. This week’s back to back episodes featured the “women tell all” episode and narrowed the top three down to only two. Tune in next week for the finale!

Rachael’s Restaurant Review: El Patron By Rachael McKriger, Editor In Chief KRI6014@calu.edu Have you ever had authentic Mexican food? No, Taco Bell and Moe’s doesn’t count. And frankly, Azteca isn’t all that great. However, in Uniontown, Pa., there is El Patron. El Patron has probably the best fajitas I’ve ever had in my 21-years on this planet. The entire staff is friendly, nice and they basically know me, fellow Cal Times writer Brad Britvich and our friends Amanda, Maddy and Chelsea because of how much we go there. Our favorite server is named Angel — and he always takes good care of us! El Patron is only a 25-minute drive from the campus of California University of Pennsylvania. Furthermore, it’s an affordable meal. For patrons

that are 21-years-old or older, the restaurant features $2.99 margaritas. But the fajitas are the best part of El Patron. Customers can order steak, chicken, shrimp or all three combined. I never really cared for green peppers, but El Patron’s are grilled perfectly. El Patron also serves delicious queso. Just last weekend, I brought my best friend from home, Abby, to El Patron for her first time. Abby is used to queso from Moe’s, but even she admitted that the queso at El Patron was much better. Other highlights on El Patron’s menu include their quesadillas, burrito deluxe and Chile Colorado. Also, if you’re in the mood for something big, look into their “Special Dinner,” which includes a chalupa,

Concert Review: PVRIS at Stage AE By Shalene Hixon, Staff Writer HIX3821@calu.edu Stage AE welcomed alt-rock band PVRIS to Pittsburgh on Feb. 22. This was the third time they had come to the Steel City, once in July 2016 as headliners at the Rex Theater and in August 2017 at the Keybank Pavillion as an opening act for 30 Seconds to Mars. The Lowell, Massachusetts, trio of Lynn Gunn, Brian MacDonald and Alex Babinski are currently on tour in support of their newest album All We Know of Heaven, All We Need of Hell. They brought along two opening acts: indie pop band Cherry Pools and indie rock/pop artist Flint Eastwood. I’ve been a huge fan of the band for the last three years now, so I was super excited to finally see them live and meet them before the show. Lynn was on vocal rest for the meet and greet (they had played in Buffalo the previous night), but I could tell she was still so appreciative for us being there. They were all sweet and welcoming and absolutely made my night before the show even started! Afterwards, I got a pretty nice spot on the barricade and made a few new friends next to me. Shortly after, the doors opened and then Cherry Pools began their set. They’re a relatively new band, so their set was pretty short. They played a few of their songs, “Forever Young” and “Are You in Love,” along with some covers. Overall, I thought they were pretty good and ended up downloading their songs a few days later. Flint Eastwood was next and started off by telling the crowd that PVRIS sent her out here to hype us up for the next 45 minutes. She definitely did not disappoint. She brought a ton of energy and intensity to her entire set. She played some of her more popular songs like “Monster,” “Find What You’re Looking For,” “Glitches” and “Queen.” I loved Flint, she has a commanding stage presence and her energy is infectious. She did a great job of getting the crowd ready for PVRIS and wasn’t afraid to call out people who she felt weren’t into it! About 30 minutes after Flint finished her set, PVRIS came on stage and opened with “Heaven.” They then played three songs from their first album

White Noise: “Mirrors,” “St. Patrick” and “Smoke.” Lynn’s vocal rest seemed to have worked, because it was obvious early on that she was going to sound amazing all night! “Half” was next, followed by two more White Noise songs: “Holy” and “You and I.”Then Brian left the stage and Lynn started to talk to the crowd. She said she always stops and makes sure everyone is doing alright halfway through, joking that the next song was the “halftime show.” She also talked about how the first time they ever played in Pittsburgh was years ago at the Smiling Moose, jokingly saying that they drove home that night thinking, “What are we doing with our lives?” She always has this loveable shyness about her. Then her and Alex performed an acoustic version of “Same Soul” before Brian returned so they could play “What’s Wrong,” “Winter,” “Separate” and “Anyone Else,” which are four of my favorite songs off the new album. The final song of the set was “My House” and then the band left the stage. The crowd began to chant “One more song” shortly after, and they returned to play “No Mercy” as the encore. Towards the end of the song, Lynn climbed down

from the stage and stood on the center of the barricade. She then made her way to our side of the barricade and I was able to hold her hand for a couple seconds. The band then threw their guitar picks and set lists into the crowd before leaving the stage one final time. I was not disappointed at all after seeing PVRIS live; they put on an amazing show and had some pretty good opening acts. They don’t need to have eccentric visuals behind them; their music and stage presence speak for themselves. I liked how they played almost every song from AWKOHAWNOH and a good portion of songs from White Noise. They really don’t have any bad songs, so whatever set list they would choose to play would be great regardless. I also loved how Lynn always made sure to interact with the crowd and get us involved, telling us to jump and sing along during almost every song. Even Alex and Brian did the same when they could! If you’re a rock fan, you need to see PVRIS at least once. You won’t regret it at all. I’ll definitely be seeing them every time they come back to town!

Wa t e r pa r k s — E n t e r t a i n m e n t Waterparks have been on a steady climb since the release of their first album two years ago and their newest release Entertainment has the potential to turn that steady climb into so much more. The band has had the backing of the Madden brothers from Good Charlotte since they first hit the scene, which turned into Benji Madden, vocalist for Good Charlotte, producing both of their albums to date. Entertainment grows from Waterparks’ previous release in every aspect, more creative lyrics, better and catchier vocals, overall better music, and it also shows the band experimenting with some different sounds similar to The 1975. “Blonde” and “Rare” show the band’s ability to pump out catchier songs than thought possible and throw in some creative lyrics too with “Blonde” talking about singer Awsten Knight changing his hair according to his mental state. Their growth in experimenting is shown on “Peach”, and easily the best song on the album, “We Need to Talk”. The change isn’t exactly something the band could find success in completely switching to, but when combined with what they’ve been known for this album ends up being a perfect balance to keep your interest peaked. The last two songs are weaker than the rest of the album, but with the quality of the beginning it’s easy to ignore. Waterparks have quite possibly stumbled onto something wonderful and memorable with “Entertainment”, powerful enough to resonate for many years.

Movie Marathon Reviews with Jeromy Mackey! Few movies are cherished as dearly as the original Jumanji. When Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle was announced, some had significant doubts on the attempt to recreate the magic that the late Robin Williams infused into the original. Welcome to the Jungle thankfully doesn’t try to recapture the feeling of the first one, and instead creates one of the most entertaining video game movies. Dwayne Johnson’s inconsistent partnership with Kevin Hart is on the successful side, and Jack Black and Karen Gillan shine next to two of the biggest stars in current Hollywood comedy.

Russians indicted in Mueller’s investigation By James Rudolph, Opinions Editor RUD2588@calu.edu As Robert S. Mueller III continues his investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 Presidential election, a 37-page indictment was issued on Feb. 16. In the indictment, the Justice Department charged 13 Russians and three companies for their potential role in a network designed to undermine the election and support the Trump campaign. When the indictment was handed-out by a grand jury in Washington, D.C., President Donald Trump refuted the claims and dismissed questioning from the press. Twelve of the Russians who were indicted worked for the Internet Research Agency in St. Petersburg. Also known as Glavset, the IRA’s mission is to disrupt the internet with as much pro-Russia information as it can while promoting Russia’s goals and ideology. The IRA would create fake accounts and promote the Russian government’s point of view in various issues, such as their actions in the Ukraine and in the Middle East. The other Russian charged in the indictment is Yevgeny Prigozhin, a businessman dubbed by the Russian media as “Putin’s cook.” Two of his companies, Concord Management and Consulting LLC and Concord Catering, were indicted for funding the IRA. The Russian operation began in 2014, before Trump announced his run for the presidency. But Mueller concluded that the Russians were supporting Trump’s candidacy and disparaging the Hilary campaign. Russian agents traveled to the United States to gather intelligence and sow political discord. They worked with an unidentified American who helped them focus on battleground states, like Colorado, Virginia, and Florida. The Russians also posed as political activists and used hot-bed issues, such as immigration, guncontrol, and religion to manipulate individuals to support the Trump campaign. They even posed as Americans and coordinated with staff members of Trump’s campaign to organize political rallies in

Photo of Yevgeny Prigozhin courtesy of Getty Images. Florida, in August 2016. It isn’t indicated that the Russian government ran the operation, but intelligence officials publicly said that Russian president Vladimir V. Putin directed and oversaw the venture. Also, two of the companies indicted held Russian government contracts. However, none of the individuals were arrested, as Russia generally doesn’t extradite its citizens to the United States. The hope is to publicly shame the operatives involved and make it more difficult for them to work covertly in the future. That way they are at risk to capture if they travel. The indictment doesn’t say if the Russian involvement directly interfered with the outcome of the election, and American intelligence agencies say there is no way to measure the Russian

influence. The indictment didn’t mention the Democratic email hacking or whether Trump tried to obstruct Mueller’s Russian investigation. Also, the indictment didn’t mention that President Trump or his associates willingly took part in the conspiracy. What is known is the pile of evidence collected by Mueller. Donald Trump, Jr. met with a Russian lawyer to collect dirt on Hillary Clinton. One of Trump’s advisors admitted that they were tipped off in advanced to the hacked Hillary emails. Another advisor was in contact with Russian hackers through a Twitter account, and yet another advisor was said to be an unlawful Russian agent by a federal judge. Meanwhile, the Trump campaign falsely denied any contact with Russian agents.

Former Donald Trump advisor speaks out By James Rudolph, Opinions Editor RUD2588@calu.edu Kenneth C. Frazier, chief executive of the pharmaceutical company Merck, served on one of President Trump’s advisory boards. However, he resigned because of the president’s refusal to condemn white nationalists and became involved in an open feud with President Trump. In a recent interview with The New York Times, Frazier speaks on the matter. While serving on the president’s American Manufacturing Council, Frazer and Trump found themselves at odds. Frazier discusses how he and the president had opposing views early in the administration about certain issues like climate change and immigration. “There is a process for deciding how we address those issues as a country,” Frazier said, “This is a democracy.” It wasn’t until August 2017, when the far-right “Unite the Right” rally and resulting violence was held, that Frazier decided to leave Trump’s business advisory council. After one of the protesters, who identified themselves as a white nationalist, drove his car into a crowd of people and killing Heather Heyer. Frazier, along with other Americans, felt the president failed to condemn white-supremacy and neo-Nazi slogans. On Aug. 14, two days after the events at Charlottesville, Frazier tweeted, “I am resigning from the President’s American Manufacturing Council. Our country’s strength stems from its diversity and the contributions made by men and women of different faiths, races, sexual orientation, and political beliefs. America’s leaders must honor our fundamental values by clearly rejecting expressions of hatred, bigotry and group supremacy, which run counter to the American ideal that all people are created equal. Almost an hour after Frazier’s tweet, President Trump responded by tweeting, “Now that Ken Frazier of Merck Pharma has resigned from President’s Manufacturing Council, he will have more time to LOWER RIPOFF DRUG PRICES!” Frazier consulted with his board before making the decision to resign. He said the board gave him unanimous support. Frazier wasn’t the only businessman on one of the president’s advisory councils that felt the

same way. On the same night as his tweet, the chief executives of Intel and Under Armour steppe down from their advisory councils. By Aug. 16, multiple top chief executives stepped down from their advisory councils. As a result, the advisory councils were disbanded. “What happened that weekend I think was not a Democratic issue or a Republican issue,” Frazier said, “I think that really went to the core of who we say we are as Americans.” It is expected for advisors to a leader to have opposing views. These individuals are there to help the president make the best decisions, for their respected advisory council. It is important for an individual, who makes

decisions that impact millions of people, to hear opposing view points to understand an issue. This helps that leader make the best possible decision, after hearing all sides of an issue. When you see dozens of advisors, who are supposed to be guides, step down from their roles, because of a decision made, is when there is a problem. While President Trump’s supporters might blindly follow his decisions, the rest of the American people must wonder why so many people, who originally supported him and gladly accepted positions on his advisory councils, have all turned away. It seems the only common denominator in bad decisions made is President Trump.

Air-conflict in the Middle East: Iran’s Influence By James Rudolph, Opinions Editor RUD2588@calu.edu The morning of Feb. 10 was rocked by the conflict between Israeli Air-Space Forces and Syrian forces under Bashar Al- Assad’s rule. Assad was supported the Islamic Revolutionary Guard, a branch of Iran’s military forces dedicated to protecting the country’s Islamic Republic System from foreign interference. A drone operated by the IRGC was shot down in Israeli airspace at 4 a.m. About an hour later, multiple Israeli F-16Is and F-15I aircraft were scrambled for an attack against Iranian military targets in Syria, including T-4/ Tiyas air base in the center of the country. The bombers and fighters dropped their payloads and laid waste most of their targets. Following the airstrike, social-media in Lebanon and Syria showed Assad’s’ air-defenses firing surface-to-air missiles in retaliation. Minutes after the counter-attack, an Israeli F-16I crashed in northern Israel from being hit by a Syrian SAM missile. The ISAF launched a second airstrike around 8:45 a.m. against multiple air-defenses around the Syrian capital, including the IRGC/Hezbollah Headquarters and the Ba’ath Party headquarters. Assad’s forces responded with a second wave of SAM missiles. By 9 a.m. the airstrikes stopped. Iranian aggression, through Syria, shows how much influence Iran has on its neighbor. Multiple IRGC personnel are deployed in military bases in Syria, and Iran established and supports multiple militias they trained in Syria. Along with military support, Iran brings new technology into Syria that is utilized for espionage. The expansion of Iran’s militant force into Syria, and multiple neighboring countries, to resist their rivals’ forces is, what the Libyan newspaper AlZahf Al-Akhdar call the “Axis of Resistance.” Iranian leaders are open about the “resistance” and their plans to establish it further to prevent Israeli influence and US hegemony. As opposed to direct military conflict, Iran’s goal is to deepen ties with local forces with similar goals and benefit from finance and expertise. This creates a problem for their rivals, Israel, Saudi Arabia and the US, who are failing to develop methods to combat this strategy. In Syria the evidence is clear. In addition to T-4/

Tiyas air base, three other military bases, Al-Shayrat airfield, Kiswah base and a compound near Damascus airport, are in Syria that act as tactical bases for Iranian forces and their militia allies. Iran’s model is similar to when they helped establish of Hezbollah in Lebanon during the 1980’s. In Iraq, multiple militia groups are sponsored by Iran, while the Iranians get closer to Iraqi economics and politics. The main focus of the US is the access these militant groups have to extremely destructive weapons through Iranian support, according to Lt. Gen. H.R. McMaster, president Trump’s national security advisor. At a security conference in Munich, he said, “So the time is now, we think, to act out against Iran.” At the same conference, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu warned Iran to not test Israel’s resolve. He

pledged that Israel would retaliate not only against Iran, but its proxies as well. Both Israel and Iran have said that they do not want to resort to warfare, but as Iran continues to establish their influence and presence in surrounding countries, the greater the pressure felt by Israel to take a preemptive air-strike. What will the action taken by the United States look like? President Trump’s support for Israel is wellknown, but what kind of support can we offer? Direct military support would give cause for Iran to declare war, which is not desired by any country on either side. Is this even a cause for the United States to be militarily involved in? The only option at the moment is to analyze and understand, in order to make the next move the best one.

Carlos Cordeiro named next USSF president By Rachael McKriger, Editor-In-Chief KRI6014@calu.edu The U.S. Soccer Federation has a new president. However, it’s a familiar face in the program. Former vice president under Sunil Gulati – now the former president of U.S. Soccer – Carlos Cordeiro won the vote on Feb. 10 to become the next president of the federation. Cordeiro won 68.6 percent of the final ballot – the third ballot – beating out Kathy Carter, Kyle Martino, Eric Wynalda and Hope Solo. Originally, Paul Caligiuri, Michael Winograd and Steve Gans all ran for the position. However, Caliguiri dropped out after the first ball while Winograd and Gans dropped out after the second ballot. Cordeiro was born in Bombay, India, to a Portuguese father and Colombian mother and moved to Miami when he was 15-years-old. He graduated from Harvard University and was formerly a partner at Goldman Sachs before joining U.S. Soccer. He became an American citizen 10 years after moving to Miami. During his time in the federation, Cordeiro was named the first independent director in 2007. He has also served in other roles, including the treasurer, chair of the Budget Committee and director of the U.S. Soccer Foundation. Cordeiro also is a representative of USSF on the CONCACAF Council and FIFA Stakeholders Committee. “Thank you to those of you who have supported me today,” Cordeiro said after his win. “This is incredibly humbling. I want to thank all the candidates for a stirring campaign. I’d like to thank Sunil and our board for their tireless service. To those of you who didn’t vote for me, I’m going to work to earn your support and trust over the next four years.” “I promise I will work for all of you to bring us together as one soccer community.” The unity throughout U.S. Soccer has been absent. There has been wide tension between the U.S. Men’s and Women’s National Teams. Players have partaken in the verbal abuses to each other, and fans claiming one team is better than the other doesn’t help. I always feel awkward saying I root for both teams, which shouldn’t happen. I am in a group on Facebook that promotes the National Women’s Soccer League and U.S. Women’s National Team, and there will be moments when people post things to bash the men’s team. What happened to the slogan, “One Nation. One Team?”

Cordeiro has his hands full trying to get both sides to work together. One of his biggest tasks as USSF president is going to be restoring the belief – and pride – for the U.S. Men’s National Team. The USMNT will not be punching their ticket to Russia for the 2018 FIFA World Cup – set to begin in June – due to a loss by Trinidad & Tobago, and victories from Costa Rica and Panama. Bracketbusters and huge performers By Danny Beeck, Sports Editor BEE1558@calu.edu

With the start of March upon us, that can only mean one thing in the sports world: March Madness. This season is living up to its name as well, with various teams making the leap toward the top of the standings, only to get knocked down by an unworthy opponent. With Virginia at the top of the leaderboard for the time being, only time will tell if they can keep their winning ways alive. Boasting the best record in the nation with only two losses on the year, the Cavaliers have taken down either ends of the “Tobacco Road” rivalry with wins against North Carolina at home, and Duke on the road. One of the losses came in overtime for Virginia, as they were dropped at home to the in-state Virginia Tech Hokies. Likely taking the one spot in the tournament, Virginia will not have the easiest of roads to the finals. If all stays the same, the Cavaliers could have a run in with the young and talented Kentucky team, or the unpredictable West Virginia Mountaineers. Flipping over to the other side of the bracket now, the Villanova Wildcats are the likely top spot for the East, and are sitting at number 4 in the nation. With four losses to in conference opponents, the Wildcats are looking to return to the throne after a disappointing exit in the 2017 tournament. The two wins against Xavier does not seem to help their case, as the Musketeers are in the three spot, are are the likely candidate for the one spot in the Midwest. This is not the team from the 2016 tournament though, as they have had trouble contending against inside penetration throughout the season. One thing is for certain though, they know how to score. The Wildcats hold the highest scoring average in the country, and rank in the top 20 with assists per game as well. The last spot in the tournament seems like it will land into the laps of the Kansas Jayhawks, who are as unpredictable as any other team in the entire nation. With that said, their conference as a whole

is in shambles this year with the second place team, West Virginia, at the 20 spot in the country. With three seniors on their roster, the Jayhawks are in the same position that the rest of the teams in the country see themselves in, little experience on the floor but an experienced coach at the helm. Devonte’ Graham has averaged around 18 points this season a seven assists, along with four rebounds. With a regular season performance that could put him in the talks for first team AllAmerican, the tournament could determine where he plays at the next level. With each conference beginning to shape out and the stronger teams starting to emerge, gaining confidence ahead of March 13 will be imperative. The youth of each team in the nation will prove to be the biggest challenge that their experienced coaches will be tasked with, and as always with the March Madness tournament, the teams records can be thrown away. Every team is 0-0, and nobody is safe.

Curtis ready for new, challenging adventure By Rachael McKriger, Editor In Chief KRI6014@calu.edu It’s a new dawn for women’s soccer at California University of Pennsylvania. That’s the new motto for brand new head coach Pete Curtis, who was hired by the university and introduced on Feb. 7. Curtis is a veteran of NCAA coaching, in both the men’s and women’s game. His recent coaching experience included spending the past 11 seasons at nearby Washington & Jefferson College. His record with the Presidents was 132-69-17 during his tenure. He was named the PAC Coach of the Year three times. Now, at Cal U, he’s hoping to bring the same success he found in Washington over to California. In addition to success, Curtis hopes to also bring a strong team ethic on and off the field and a belief that “together anything is possible.” “Despite the extreme competition in the PSAC we can back in the leading pack,” Curtis said. “We have all the tools in place, it’s just the question of using them the right way.” Curtis said that one of the reasons he accepted the job at Cal U was because it was an “interesting” challenge. “I think the opportunity to recruit a broader base of student athletes appealed to me, given the wide variety of majors available at Cal U,” Curtis said. “The relatively lesser cost of attendance than the previous school I was at and the great catchment area of western Pennsylvania were factors.” Curtis also admitted that Cal U was the only school he would have chosen, due to keeping his residence in Washington County. “It was a good opportunity with little interruption to my life and my family’s life,” Curtis said. “I heard good things about the school from my daughter [Shannon], who graduated here a couple years ago.” Originally from Liverpool, England, Curtis said that the Vulcans currently have 15 players on their roster. However, he expects about 10 more students to finish out the rest of his roster.

Curtis was hired by the school after signing day, meaning he will inherit many players recruited by former head coach Glenn Francis. He said that one of his biggest challenges will be allying the mixture of incoming players with returning players. “It will be very difficult for me,” Curtis said. “The first step will be a learning process for me. I need to try to learn about those players and what are their strengths and weaknesses. I didn’t sign them, so I need to know why they were signed. My job, regardless of who signed those players, is to get the best out of them.” Curtis has already met the 15 returning players, including seniors Julia Darminio, Danielle Koehler and Olivia Bryan. The team had their first official practice Feb. 22. Curtis made sure that all of the players knew that the new era meant a clean slate for players. “I said to them, every long journey starts with that very first step,” Curtis said. “That was our very first step. To get where we want to be is going to take an awful lot of hard work. The message I wanted to get across to the girls that some of them will be there for some very exciting times, and some might be gone before they come.” “But we’re all going to be working toward those times,” Curtis continued. “We’ll be in the mix and one of the teams that people will talk about when they talk about the PSAC. That’s the goal.” In regards to the PSAC, Curtis has some familiarity with the conference. He coached against some schools during his time as a Division II men’s coach at the University of Charleston. “In terms to the women’s side, obviously I’m familiar with some of the teams that have been more prominent in recent years,” Curtis said. “I recruited a lot of girls that were recruited by some of those teams, so there is a familiarity in the aspect.” Before Curtis can think of PSAC play, he has some formalities to figure out, including the hiring of an assistant coach. He also wants to form a coaching bond with Emedin Sabic, the Vulcans men’s soccer

coach, to bring both programs together. “Everywhere I worked, I had a fantastic working relationship with the opposite coach, whether it be the men’s or women’s coach,” Curtis said. “I have absolutely no doubt that Emedin and I will have a terrific working relationship. I think both teams will benefit from that.” Curtis said that right now is an exciting time for women’s soccer at Cal U. He wants the program to become a tradition, and something that students, faculty and the community can look forward to supporting. “Regardless of the success, or anything else, that has happened in the past, that doesn’t matter right now,” Curtis said. “All that matters is what we do from here on in. I’m trying to get that across the young ladies and anyone associated with the program. I always give everything I have to the teams I coach. And I expect the same in return.” “And if I get that reciprocity I have no doubt that success will follow.”

NBA All-Stars take on Los Angeles By Olivia Wilson, Staff Writer WIL6494@calu.edu

This past weekend the NBA All-Star weekend took place at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. The weekend consisted of the Celebrity Game, the Rising Stars Challenge, the Three Point Contest, the Dunk Contest and the All Star Game itself. The celebrity game was broken down into Team Lakers vs Team Clippers. Notable celebrities in the game were Quavo, Jamie Foxx, Jerry Ferrara and Justin Bieber among former NBA players such as Tracy McGrady, Nate Robinson, Jason Williams and Paul Pierce. Team Clippers beat Team Lakers with a score of 75-66, and the MVP for the game was rapper Quavo, who had 19 points, five rebounds and three assists. The Rising Stars game included the Team USA vs. Team World format which features young and upcoming players from the league. Team World held the lead the entire game and defeated Team USA 155-124. Bogdan Bogdanovic of the Sacramento Kings who made his NBA debut this season, shined in the game and took home the MVP title with his 26 points and six assists. The

Serbian native had help from his Team World teammates, Joel Embiid, Ben Simmons, and Jamal Murray. The Three-Point Challenge consisted of Devin Booker outshining his competition and setting a new record for the contest. The Suns player scored 28 out of his 34 possible shots. During the contest there are five racks of ball sets up throughout the three-point line. The top three shooters from the initial round then advance to the championship round in which the winner is the shooter with the highest score. “Our season hasn’t been too bright,” Booker said. “This is kind of a big deal back home.” The Dunk Contest was a close competition that came down to Donovan Mitchell of the Utah Jazz and Larry Nance Jr. of the Cleveland Cavaliers. Notable dunks from Mitchell and Nance Jr. included the use of their family. Donovan Mitchell brought up his little sister to help with one of his dunks while Larry Nance Jr. borrowed a dunk his father, Larry Nance Sr., used in the 1984 inaugural Dunk contest. The rookie, Donovan Mitchell, finished

with a reverse 360 dunk originally used by Vince Carter in the 2000 competition, to win this year’s contest. With an exciting new format, the NBA All Star game featured the best in the league facing off for the charity money incentive, and of course bragging rights. Instead of the typical format of East vs. West, the fan votes were used to decide the top two athletes, Lebron James and Stephen Curry, who would then become the two captains for the game. The captains then participated in an untelevised draft to select the players who would play for their respective teams. The game was back and forth for the entirety, but it was Team Lebron who got the win with a 148-145 defeat. After 67 years of the same format, the game featured exciting defense from both teams which is something the game has lacked in years past. Notable performances in the game came from Joel Embiid and Lebron James, who was named the 2018 MVP for the game. Team Lebron was rewarded with $350,000 to give to their chosen charities.

PA USL Soccer Preview: Riverhounds & Penn FC By Jessica Crosson, Entertainment Editor & Rachael McKriger, Editor-in-Chief

Crosson: New era of soccer begins in Harrisburg Re-branding is bringing a new era of soccer to Harrisburg as the formerly known Harrisburg City Islanders have transformed into Penn FC. It was announced at the end of 2017 that the City Islanders would be no more and the 2018 season would be the official kick off for Penn FC. Not only has Penn FC claimed the title of Central Pennsylvania’s professional USL team but they have also joined forces with international soccer organization, Rush Soccer. Rush Soccer is committed to providing an unparalleled soccer experience and has had major success in doing so through their 85 clubs located throughout the United States and abroad. With the re-brand a lot of changes and new faces have been revealed. A change to the front office staff included naming Tim Schulz as Penn FC’s General Manager.

McKriger: New coach, new logo, new motivation The Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC have had major struggles in the last two seasons. After making the playoffs in 2015, the Riverhounds have had a dismal past two seasons. The year of 2016, which featured head coaches Mark Steffens and Dave Brandt, resulted in a 6-17-7 record. Last year, in Brandt’s first full-year as head coach, the Riverhounds slightly improved on their record, finishing 8-12-12. This year, the streak of 13th-place finishes in the USL’s Eastern Conference will look to come to a close. After the USL was granted Division II status in the U.S. Soccer Federation, Brandt stepped down as head coach due to not having the adequate coaching license.

Schulz is the President and CEO of Rush Soccer and brings executive experience to Penn FC’s front office. Another announcement that came shortly after Schulz was that former Head Coach Bill Becher would be stepping into the Head of Technical Staff positon, serving as the Technical Advisor for this inaugural season. As preseason began to don on the new team, Raoul Voss was named as the first head coach of Penn FC. Voss was formerly working with the Tampa Bay Rowdies as their assistant coach. Before his time with the Rowdies, Voss also served as the assistant coach for the Fort Lauderdale Strikers in the North American Soccer League. Almost the entire team of players for Penn FC’s inaugural season will be new as only four players from the 2017 City Islanders squad will be returning. Jake Bond, Tiago Calvano, Sean Lewis and John Grosh are the four veteran Harrisburg players that will be returning this season. So far, Penn FC has only announced five new signings; Jorge Rivera, Dan

Metzger, Calvin Rezende, Jacob Lissek, Aaron Dennis, Pedro Galvano and Mauro Eustaquio are the first new player signings announced. With one preseason match under their belt, Penn FC was able to get a little taste of what they are working with this season. Penn FC battled Long Island University Brooklyn on Feb. 16 to a 2-1 victory. LIU was able to secure a quick first goal in the game that seemed to catch Penn FC off-guard and wake them up a little. Penn FC answered back late in the first half to tie the game at 1-1 and was able to secure the preseason victory with a goal scored in the 57’ minute. Following the game Voss shared that overall he was happy with his new team’s performance. Penn FC’s first game of the season will be on the road against the Charleston Battery on March 24. The team will then travel to take on both the Pittsburgh Riverhounds SC, March 31, and Atlanta United II, April 8, before their home opener on April 21 against the Charleston Battery.

Out of nowhere, owner Tuffy Shallenberger hired Bob Lilley, the former Rochester Rhinos head coach. The Rhinos, who could not make USL Division II requirements, are not competing this season. Lilley isn’t coming to Pittsburgh on his own, though. The former Pittsburgh Stingers indoor soccer midfielder signed former Rhinos Kyle Morton, Dan Lynd, Jordan Dover, Raymond Lee, Kenardo Forbes and Christiano François in the first of many signings. Also making his way down to Pittsburgh is Lilley’s right hand man: Mark Pulisic. The last name should sound familiar; Pulisic is the father of U.S. Men’s National Team and Borussia Dortmund superstar Christian Pulisic. Lilley and Pulisic have a long history of both coaching and playing professional soccer. However, the roster isn’t completely Rhinodominated. Lilley did bring some returning players back,

including captain Kevin Kerr. Also signing for another season in black and gold are Romeo Parkes, Kay Banjo, Tobi Adewole, Joe Greenspan and Ben Fitzpatrick. The biggest moves that will hurt the Riverhounds are the departures of Corey Hertzog to the St. Louis FC, Taylor Washington to Nashville SC and Keasel Broome to the Bethlehem Steel FC. The Riverhounds are also without their pipeline from the Columbus Crew SC. The MLS club was the brother-club of the Riverhounds, sending players like Marshall Hollingsworth, Zack Steffen, Lalas Abubakar, Cristian Martínez and Connor Maloney down to the Steel City. The deal was expired — and not taken up for renewal — this past offseason. However, with a brand new logo, new uniforms and a coach that has a playoff-winning track record, this summer will be a season to look out for at Highmark Stadium.

Top 10 moments from Pyeongchang Olympics By Rachael McKriger, Editor In Chief KRI6014@calu.edu The Pyeongchang Winter Olympics are officially over. It was three weeks of friendly sport competition, a bit of controversy and unforgettable moments. As for the entire competition as a whole, here are my Top 10 moments from the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics.

10. Lindsey Vonn’s final Olympic ski

Lindsey Vonn is an icon of winter sports. The 33-year-old alpine skier suffered a devastating injury way back on Nov. 20, 2013, which kept her out of the 2014 Sochi Olympics. Making her Olympic comeback -- and final Olympics appearance -- Vonn won bronze in the downhill ski competition. “This is my last [Olympic] downhill,” Vonn told NBC after her bronze-medal race. “I wish I could keep going, you know? I had so much fun. I love what I do. My body just can’t — probably can’t — take another four years. I’m proud to have competed for my country. Proud to have given it my all. I’m proud to have come away with a medal.”

9. Adam Rippon steals America’s heart

The first openly-gay figure skater to compete in the men’s program of the Olympics is Adam Rippon. At 28-years-old, this is the same Rippon that said he ate his feelings out after not being named to the 2014 Sochi USA Figure Skating team. In the men’s program, Rippon placed seventh, with a combined score of 86.69. Rippon also won a bronze medal in the team figure skating event, doing his part in the men’s free skate by earning a score of 172.98. Rippon is one of two openly gay U.S. athletes -- the other being Gus Kenworthy, who kissed his boyfriend before competing in the freestyle skiing event. The two took a picture before the Olympics began, at the opening ceremony, in which Kenworthy captioned, “We’re here. We’re queer. Get used to it.”

8. Red Gerard takes the gold

Shaun White’s successor has already claimed gold at 17-years-old. Red Gerard, from Colorado, claimed the United States’ first gold medal in the slopestyle snowboarding competition. Gerard is the youngest snowboarder to

win a medal at the Winter Olympics. Gerard beat out veteran Canadian snowboarders Maxence Parrot, silver medalist, and Mark McMorris, the bronze medalist.

7. Shaun White competes in final Olympics

Just like Lindsey Vonn, Shaun White took to the Olympic course one more time. Although he hasn’t publicly said that Pyeongchang was his last Olympics, White isn’t getting any younger. However, on the course, the 31-year-old proved he could still hang with younger snowboarders. White claimed the gold medal in the halfpipe event, with a score of 97.75. Nagasu became only the third figure skater from the United States to successful complete a triple axel. The other two to complete the task before her were

In the halfpipe event, Kim claimed the gold medal with a score of 98.25. Stoked to bring home the gold.”

4. USA Curling makes history

While some Olympic fans might not understand curling, dedicated athletes partake in the Olympics most bizarre sport. The United States team has never won a gold medal — until now. The men’s team of John Shuster, Tyler George, Matt Hamilton, John Landsteiner and Joe Polo won the gold medal over the team from Sweden, 10-7. “We want our sport to be loved by our country as much as we love it,” George said. “There’s a reason why we play it, and there’s a reason why we love it as much as we do.” Team Shuster reached the gold-medal round after beating the Canadian team, 5-3.

3. Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir win gold

So many people wondered if Tessa Virtue and Scott Moir of Canada were a real-life couple after their

convincing ice dance skating, which won them another gold medal. The duo also took gold with Team Canada in the team skate. Viture and Moir, who are competing in their final Olympics, had a world-record short skate of 83.67 points and a free skate of 122.40 points. Virture and Moir combined for 206.07 points, another world record. The Canadians beat out silver medalists Gabriella Papadakis and Guillaume Cizeron of France and bronze medalists Maia Shibutani and Alex Shibutani of the United States.

2. USA Hockey defeats Canada for gold

The United States Women’s Hockey Team haven’t beaten Canada in the Olympics for 20 year. The current 2018 team have ended that drought. After falling to Canada in group play, the United States had three players score in a shootout on Feb. 22 to crown the United States Olympic gold-medal champions over Canada. “It is everything for our country,” U.S. coach Robb Stauber said. “I am just so thankful for the outcome. It was a thrilling final. It was unreal.”

1. Alina Zagitova and Evgenia Medvedeva battle for gold

It was a battle of the Russians in the ladies program in figure skating.

Alina Zagitova was the victor, as the 15-year-old narrowly defeated her training partner, and friend, Evgenia Medvedeva. Zagitova finished with a final score of 239.57 points, enough to claim gold. Medvedeva finished with 238.26 points, notching the silver medal. The two skaters are both coached by Eteri Tutberidze and Sergei Dudakov. They train together regularly, and are both young skaters, with Medvedeva being only 18-years-old. “I haven’t fully realized yet that I’ve won,” Zagitova said. “I think I need some time to understand that I won the Olympic Games. I can’t believe I am the champion.” The decision had a lot of fans claiming that Medvedeva was “robbed.” After her skate, and after finding out she lost the gold medal to her training partner, Medvedeva said to her coach, “I did everything I could.” After the skate, and big reveal for whole would take gold, both skaters enveloped each other in a hug, showing that no matter what, they’re friends first. Despite the silver medal finish, Medvedeva is looking forward to a long career -- and potentially a trip to Beijing for the 2022 Olympic Games. “I’ve got a big life in sports ahead of me and I want to keep going for many years,” Medvedeva said.
