What to take away from Student Convocation By Jessica Crosson, Contributing Editor CRO8908@calu.edu On Sept. 2, Student Government President Jonathan Hershey opened Student Convocation for the fall semester. Hershey began by informing students on the update in student conduct, previewing the tentative homecoming week schedule and letting students know that there are community assistant positions open for the spring 2018 semester. Following that, Hershey played a promotional video for the It’s On Us campaign that California University of Pennsylvania will be taking part in again this semester. President Geraldine Jones addressed those in attendance on the state of our university stating that there are five major points that put Cal U into great standing. Those five points being that Cal U is academically strong, financially stable, our campus is changing, enrollment is rising and student success is continuing to be supported. In regards to being academically strong, Jones highlighted Cal U’s strength in the Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics fields. She also pointed out that new courses are being added, such as courses on drone technology. A relief to many students came as they heard that Cal U is financially stable. Jones stated that Cal U had a balanced budget without having to dip into any reserves this past year and it is projected to be the same case next year as well. It was also pointed out that housing costs are the same at 2016 so that has not seen an increase in cost. Many students may have noticed the construction that has begun on campus which is a part of the changes that will be
Cal U President Geraldine M. Jones noticeable throughout the year. Coover Hall is currently undergoing renovations and will re-open in 2019. The New Science building will also be seeing renovations as the year progresses. Both of those building’s renovations are being financed through the State Department of General Services. Alongside of building renovations, Cal U’s campus will feature a solar powered charging station right outside of Manderino Library for students to be able to sit outside and work diligently beginning on Oct. 9. Hammock stations are being created in the lawn outside of Guesman Hall this year and are projected be added to the lawn between Carter Hall and Smith Hall next year. After the scare over the possibilities of universities closing or being forced to
merge, Jones was happy to announce that enrollment is rising at Cal U. This year enrollment has risen 3.1 percent higher than last fall. The large incoming freshman class hosts students from 52 counties and 15 states. Jones wrapped up a successful Student Convocation by reminding students to utilize student success resources such as Noss Hall and Starfish and that students can borrow a variety of recreational gear from Herron Hall’s Fitness Center. She also encouraged students to make the trip on the spirit bus to this year’s annual Coal Bowl, which is being broadcasted on ESPN3, at IUP on Oct. 7. The next opportunity to bring up any questions, comment or concerns to President Jones will be on Nov. 14 at Campus Talk.

St u dent s l ear n a b o u t s ex u a l v i o le nc e , aw aren e ss, p re v e n t i on , a n d i n ter v e ntion By Mari Boyle, News Editor BOY7446@calu.edu On September 25, students gathered in the per formance center to learn about an issue that plagues college campuses throughout the countr y. That issues is sexual violence. Students heard from Assistant District Attorney, David Wenger, a California University of Pennsylvania alum who ser ves as the lead prosecutor for Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault cases. The presentation began with a video or the It ’s On Us campaign which featured a text message conversation between two friends discussing their previous night. Throughout the texts, words were autocorrected to accurately por tray what had occurred that night, which was a sexual assault. The video was impor tant to relay to students that often, sexual assault often occurs but no one is aware because it is masked as a harmless hookup. When in fact, sexual assault transpires anytime there is a lack of consent between two individuals engaging in sexual acts of any nature. The idea of consent was an impor tant concept that Wenger discussed thoroughly with the students in attendance. Among the impor tant ideas he communicated was that consent has to be given consciously and in a sober state of mind. Fur thermore, a “yes” does not always equal consent. Consent must be given in the absence of any coercion or fear. he presentation was informative for all in attendance as various students
and organizations, including spor ts clubs and greek organizations, were able to attend. The Women’s Center and EndViolence Center at California University of Pennsylvania also do a lot of promotion and education regarding the issue yearround. They par ticularly do a lot with the “It ’s On Us” campaign. All are encouraged to take the “It ’s On Us” pledge at itsonus.org.

Taylor Barta
Meet DJ Maverick, otherwise known as Taylor Barta, a junior at the California University of Pennsylvania. Barta is majoring in Graphics and Multimedia and minoring in Parks and Recreational Management. This fall is DJ Maverick’s first semester as a DJ with his show The Chill Session that hits the radio airwaves from 4-6 p.m. every Sunday. Getting involved was just natural for Barta, a self-described music nut he came to the station after being invited down by DJs, and he’s been here ever since. One of DJ Maverick’s favorite WCAL memories is playing super fast Uno on the game show Flip the Table, Thursday’s 8-11, with fellow DJ’s Moon Moon, Zac the Intern and Just Ed. He’s also looking forward to seeing Halsey at PPG Stadium on Oct. 10. Outside of the station, DJ Maverick is heavily involved being the graphic designer for the Cal Times, a member of University Choir, a brother of Delta Chi, and a member of the Society of Professional Journalists, Screen Printing Student Association and Underground Cafe. You can find him outside in nature, hanging out with family and friends and being a professional cuddler. Top 5 Artists: Ed Sheeran, Frank Sinatra, Illenium, Eden, & Halsey
Keeping Up with The Kardashians 10 Year Anniversary By Olivia Wilson, Staff Writer WIL6494@calu.edu This past Sunday, Keeping Up with The Kardashians: The 10th Anniversary Special aired on E! Network. The special was hosted by Ryan Secreast, who is actually who pitched the idea of giving the family a show to the network. During the anniversary special, which included a studio audience, the famous family recounted all the best memories and fan favorite scenes from the show so far including the iconic scene where Kim Kardashian lost her diamond earring in the ocean. Kim who now can laugh at how
ridiculous it was when she was crying over the earring and the fact that Kourtney told her that there were people dying and she shouldn’t be crying. They showed an extended preview of the season to come which often goes into more detail then what one often reads in the headlines. The anniversary special marks ten years of the show being on air and the start of the new 14th season. The show which was prerecorded was disappointing to some due to the recent uncovering that both Khloe Kardashian and Kylie Jenner are reported to be pregnant. There has been
multiple different rumors and speculation about the reports. Reports of 20-year-old Kylie Jenner being pregnant with her rapper beau Travis Scott came just a few days before those of 33-year- old Khloe Kardashian. Khloe Kardashian is expecting a baby with the Cleveland Cavaliers basketball player Tristan Thompson. Neither report has been denied thus causing many to believe that they are both indeed pregnant. Kylie is reportedly farther along than Khloe so it shouldn’t be too long before she starts showing.

This Is Us changing television drama By Rachael McKriger, Editor-in-Chief KRI6014@calu.edu This Is Us, the NBC hit show to grace televisions across the country, is changing dramatic television. The series follows the Pearson family in the 1970s, teenage years and the present day. Specifically, the story follows Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca (Mandy Moore) the matriarch and patriarch of the Pearson family. In season one, the show chronicled Jack and Rebecca’s negotiations on their wishes to have children, before welcoming triplets. However, it didn’t go as planned. In season one, Kevin (Justin Hartley) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) were born, but their third child, to be named Kyle, died during the delivery. That’s where Randall (Sterling K. Brown), the third “triplet” comes into the picture. Randall was left on the front steps of a fire station by his father, William (Ron Cephas Jones), and the Pearsons adopted him. The kids are called the “Big Three,” a nicknamed

dubbed by Jack. In the present day, the “Big Three” are grown adults in their mid-30s. Kate is struggling to lose weight, while also working on a relationship with Toby (Chris Sullivan), a man she met at a group meeting for overweight people. Kevin is a famous actor, juggling different opportunities and women. However, at the end of season one, he reconnects with his ex-wife Sophie, whom he realizes he’s always been in love with. Then there’s Randall, who looks like has a perfect life with his wife, Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson), and two children Tess (Eris Baker) and Annie (Faithe Herman). Randall finds William, his biological father, and forms a relationship with him, moving him into the house. Tess and Annie instantly bond with William, and after a while, Beth warms up too. Now, fans have been introduced to a new season. This Is Us made it’s way back to NBC on Tuesday, Sept. 26, with a bang.
However, there will be no spoilers listed. All of the episodes are available to watch, for free, on NBC’s website. This Is Us was nominated for seven Emmy awards, including Outstanding Drama Series, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series (for both Brown and Ventimiglia), Oustanding Supporting Actor in a Drama Series (Cephas Jones) and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama Series (Metz). Brown won the Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series award. At the Critics’ Choice Television Awards, This Is Us won Best Drama Series. At the MTV Movie & TV Awards, the show won Best Tearjerker for a scene in season one where Jack and young Randall (Lonnie Chavis) attend a karate class, and Jack does push ups with Randall on his back to prove his dedication to his adopted son. This Is Us was created by Dan Fogelman and airs at 9 p.m. Tuesdays.

Band Spotlight: Oh Wonder By Shalene Hixon, Staff Writer HIX3821@calu.edu
Next up on our spotlight series is the band Oh Wonder. The London duo of Josephine Vander Gucht and Anthony West have been together since 2014. Originally, Vander Gucht performed as a solo artist under her name and also, LAYLA. West had been with three bands before joining Oh Wonder: Tonight is Goodbye, Futures and We The Wild. After writing their debut album, the two wanted to create a unique way to release it. Starting on Sept. 1, 2014, they would release one song off the album every month on SoundCloud. This trend continued until the duo released their self-entitled album, Oh Wonder, on Sept. 4, 2015. The album included all of the previously released songs as well as two unreleased songs. The album was met with positive reviews and peaked at No. 16 on the Canadian Albums Chart as well as No. 26 on the UK Albums Chart. Since its release, the album has sold over 500,000 copies and has been streamed over 500 million
times. In addition, it has also been certified silver in the UK. On Jan. 20, 2016, Oh Wonder performed for the first time on television on the US talk show Conan. After their album released the duo toured all over the world, hitting cities in countries such as Australia, Netherlands, Russia, UK, France, Sweden, Norway, Germany, Denmark, United States and Canada. They were also the opening act for a portion of the final installment of Halsey’s Badlands Tour. They opened for her from July 21 to August 2016. Also in 2016, they performed at their first set of music festivals. They played at Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza and Firefly in the United States, WayHome Festival in Canada, Live Out in Mexico and Electric Picnic in Ireland. On March 31, Oh Wonder released their first single off their second album, “Ultralife.” Similar to what they did with their first album release, the duo released a new song off of the album every few weeks. They then
released their sophomore album, Ultralife, on July 14. The album was met with positive reviews and peaked at No. 5 on the New Zealand Heatseekers Albums Chart, No. 8 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 11 on the US Top Alternative Albums Chart. They are currently on the Ultralife World Tour which will see them play in cities in 31 countries across the world, which includes United States, Canada, Russia, Europe, Australia and Asia. Oh Wonder has the kind of sound that can go from calm and relaxing in one song to upbeat and cheerful the next. If you’re into alternative/indie pop, this band is the right choice for you. Netflix Spotlight: How I Met Your Mother By Jessica Crosson, Entertainment Editor CRO8908@calu.edu
The hit TV series, How I Met Your Mother, ran from 2005 until 2014 and is currently available for streaming on Netflix. Within nine seasons this comedic show captured audiences long enough to turn out 208 episodes in total before their final season finale. With an 8.4 out of 10 rating on IMDb, How I Met Your Mother features a variety of talented actors including Josh Radnor (Ted Mosby), Jason Segel (Marshall Eriksen), Cobie Smulders (Robin Scherbatsky), Neil Patrick Harris (Barney Stinson) and Alyson Hannigan (Lily Aldrin). IMDb provides this brief and accurate description of the show, “A father recounts to his children, through a series of flashbacks, the journey he and his four best friends took leading up to him
meeting their mother.” This show takes place in New York City and follows the adventures the five main characters mentioned above as they go through a variety of highs and lows. Each season seems to have an episode or two that really hits the audience members in the feels but quickly replaces that feeling with comedic relief. When watching a show that has nine seasons it is common for certain seasons to be better than others and certainly not every episode is going to wow the audience but How I Met Your Mother does a great job at keeping the plot lines moving to keep the audience engaged. This time of the year is the perfect time to start binging a new show so be sure to add this one to your list!

CAL LIFE Nobody’s Home by Dalton Rapattoni Dalton Rapattoni’s first full-length release since his departure from American Idol is stellar through the entire album. He shows a different side of himself than he expressed on the competition with a more laid back and pop influenced sound, which allows him to rely solely on his new music rather than leaning on his success in the show. Nobody’s Home shows true potential in songwriting with some of the greatest lyrics of any album this year with lines such as “When I hold you and close my eyes I can see the pearly gates, and even after all the hell that we’ve been through I’ve found my heaven in you” from the chorus of “Heaven” and “Somewhere in America on a TV screen I wonder if your lips shared the same pixels as me” from “Somewhere in America”. On top of such a solid set of songs, Nobody’s Home also includes four acoustic versions of tracks on the album, including “Heaven”, “Somewhere in America”, and the opening track “Signs”, some of which are better and more emotional than the regular versions. Dalton keeps you wrapped in emotion throughout the entire experience that Nobody’s Home puts you through, whether it be missing someone once lost, or living in the moments you listen to this album in, and if you’re looking for the perfect album to listen to while driving on a cool fall night, Dalton Rapattoni brings you the perfect soundtrack.

Movie Marathon Reviews by Jeromy Mackey! The Mummy (2017) is a mediocre success in a world of endless reboots. Unlike most of those reboots, The Mummy genuinely feels like it at least is trying to be original and separate from its predecessors. Tom Cruise always succeeds in action sequences, and this movie is no exception. It’s what between the visually appealing fight scenes that drags and keeps

Video Game Review: NHL 18
Page 11 Oct. 6, 2017
By Colin Kirkwood, Staff Writer KIR6842@calu.edu
EA Sports has once again released their electronic take on hockey in NHL 18. This year’s game once again featured the same game modes such as the card collecting mode known as hockey ultimate team, EA sports hockey league where players can come together and take on others, and the old standby franchise mode. But this year franchise mode has been revamped with a new feature. With the recent expansion taking place in the league, the developers decided to give the player the ability to draft their own expansion team in franchise mode. In addition to this feature, franchise mode once again returns with the ability to relocate your team, preform a full rebrand, and sign new players. Overall, this mode returns virtually untouched. The trusty stand-by mode that is BeA-Pro has once again returned, with no changes made. Personally, I feel that this mode is in desperate need of a shake-up. Perhaps a way to inject some excitement into it would be an introduction of a storyline but overall it’s a solid play. Draft champions has also been placed in this year’s edition. This game mode revolves around drafting rental player cards and going head-to-head against other user drafted teams. The very popular hockey ultimate team is also featured again. This is also a card based game where players collect player cards in order to assemble the best team possible. The lone new feature to this game was the insertion of the new NHL Threes mode. The premise of this mode is to travel across continent of North America playing against every professional team on the map. The map is broken down into four circuits: Pacific, Atlantic, Central and Metropolitan. Players earn star points by defeating teams which are in turn used to buy new players for their team and to recruit mascots from the NHL onto their team. I can’t get enough of this new mode! This
is just what the franchise needed to inject life into the game. The fast paced 3-on-3 gameplay combined with the new deking controls make for an instant hit with any hockey fan. One of my favorite features is how once you defeat a team, you can then wear their jerseys. This appealed to me personally since I am a jersey fan. Another attractive feature to this mode is that players have the ability to team up with a friend and take on the map as a team. I tested this with a friend of mine and we had a blast. The zany hitting mechanics that go along with this arcade mode induce a number of collisions that are sure to draw a laugh of every player as well. When it comes to regular gameplay, found that things are basically unaltered from last year. Besides the new deking abilities that I mentioned, the overall stagnant feel has returned. Since NHL 15 the presentation has
been the same with the NBC look and feel. The commentary needs to be upgraded or added to since the same quirks and phrases can be picked up. I’m not necessarily saying that this is a bad thing, just a refresh would go a long way. Perhaps this could be established with new camera angles or new in game announcers. The graphics are once again top of the line in the only professional hockey game available on the market. Players represent their real on ice counterparts to a T. Wrapping things up, it’s clearly evident that EA sports worked hard on bringing something new and exciting to this year’s version of the game and threes was just what the doctor ordered. A solid title year in and year out and this version falls right in line. However, a gameplay shake-up would do wonders for this franchise. My final rating is 7.5 out of 10 pucks skittered wide of the net.

OPINION
Angela Merkel and the Rise of Germany’s Alt-Right By James Rudolph, Opinions Editor RUD2588@calu.edu This past Monday, Facebook turned over more than 3,000 advertisements linked to Russian accounts from its site over to the Senate and House intelligent committees, and the Senate Judiciary Hearing. On September 6th, Facebook reported that they found 470 pages and profiles linked to the Internet Research Agency, a company in St. Petersburg that is known to spread Kremlin-related propaganda across the web. Investigators believe this was part of a foreign effort to interfere with the 2016 presidential election. Special counsel Robert Mueller, and congressional committees are trying to determine if the Russian groups associated with the ads received any help from Trump associated in where to target the ads. Facebook vice president for United States public policy Joel Kaplan, in an interview, said, “The ads and accounts we found appeared to amplify divisive political issues across the political spectrum.” The ads associated with the Russian accounts covered a variety of political issues. One ad, promoting the Second Amendment, portrays and young girl holding a handgun with a message around her that says, “Why do I have a gun? Because it’s easier for my family to get me out of jail than out of cemetery,” (The missing “a” before the word ‘cemetery” indicates a common mistake Russians make while speaking English). Another ad on the LGBT United page, and a Twitter account, called @LGBTuni, featured a rainbow symbol that read, “We speak for all fellow members of LGBT community across the nation. Gender preference does not define you, your spirit defines you.” All important political topics, during the 2016 presidential election, took form in a Russian advertisement.
President Trump and Vladamir Putin at the G 20 Summit. Photo Supplied by Wikimedia Commons. Facebook isn’t the only website with Russian tampering is seen. Last week, Twitter revealed its findings of more than 200 accounts with links to the Facebook pages under Russian control. Other sites like Reddit, Instagram, LinkedIn, 4chan and Imgur saw Russian advertisements and activity from the accounts linked to Facebook. On Monday, Facebook said over 10 million people saw the political ads, and 44 percent of the ads were seen before the 2016 election. The accounts paid for “boosted posts,” Facebooks paid advertisement that appears in newsfeeds. They often included “calls to action,” like sharing a post or joining a group. Some even made political actions. A group called “Heart of Texas” called for the state’s secession. Another called “Being Patriotic” rallied Floridians in favor of the Trump
campaign. The same question of everyone’s mind is “why?” Was it to damage the campaign of Hillary Clinton, as originally thought in January? Was it collusion with the Trump administration to secure an edge over his opponents? Is it a smokescreen to throw the American people into disarray? What do the Russians gain with this, if anything? We must wait and see what our political and legal system procures. If this is some elaborate conspiracy by the Trump administration, I still ask why? Wouldn’t that go against your efforts on isolationism and national security? Doesn’t cooperation with the White House damage Vladimir Putin’s vision of a more sovereign Russia? These questions goes to show how murky this “Russian ads” issues is, and that we are only getting started.

Angela Merkel and the Rise of Germany’s Alt-Right Why the United States Should Be Watching By Angel Funk, Staff Writer FUN8385@calu.edu
Angela Merkel was elected for a fourth term to serve as Chancellor of Germany. A historical election, not just for the leaderbut also for the Alternative for Germany party commonly referred to as the AfD. After receiving 12.6 percent of the German vote, which put them third in the race, they gained a place in parliament. The first big break for any alt-right organizations. But like most “alternative right” groups AfD’s campaign was built on racist, homophobic, xenophobic, and exploiting the fears of German citizens. The question on everyone’s mind is if this event will precedent for future and existing altright groups to flourish. I believe the answer is yes. In Germany, use of Nazi symbols and propaganda may be outlawed, but it doesn’t stop the followers of the AfD from supporting the Nazi agenda as neo-Nazis. While the party itself is a mix of rightist conservative and populist ideals, The AfD holds a striking
resemblance to the Nazi party, with calls to ban effectively. Muslim people and views from Germany. Coupled with the lose of Frauke Petry, who promptly quit during a press conference after the election, was the only leader of the AfD keeping the party from the extreme right. In the United States with recent events in Charlottesville, Virginia and alt-right protesting nationwide as well as President Donald Trump’s hesitation to denounce these groups, can the United States expect more far-right protests and possibla conversion of our Republican into this alt-right identity? I don’t believe so, while the United States has far-right groups and organization. The rise of
the AfD from political scientist Werner J. Patzelt view is the isolation of the conservative views of German citizens. In America, the predominantly conservative party is in the majority control. However, the Democratic party has come in the form of rejected Obamacare repeals and representatives of the Republican party has said that in their eyes stand for nothing except major opposition. With tensions are running high and make it more important ever to be united.

OPINION
Don’t just stick to sports, athletes By Rachael McKriger, Editor In Chief KRI6014@calu.edu One knee down, linked arms and a fist in the air. Fans of the National Football League are losing their cool over players all over the 32 teams taking a stance on injustice, racism and prejudice. Before Week 3 of the NFL kicked off, President Donald Trump called National Anthem protestors “sons of bitches” and called for owners to fire players that protest the anthem. Instead, owners like Jerry Jones of the Dallas Cowboys and Shahid Khan of the Jacksonville Jaguars joined their players on the sidelines, kneeling and locking arms. This movement first started by Colin Kaepernick last year. The quarterback — who currently doesn’t hold a job in the NFL and continues to raise awareness on injustice against minorities — propelled a movement taking notice more now than ever. It’s not just in the NFL though. Megan Rapinoe was the first Caucasian athlete to kneel during the National Anthem — and even did it when the United States Women’s National Team faced the Netherlands last year. Since then, U.S. Soccer has implemented a rule mandating any player that is representing the national team have to stand for the anthem. However, at the club level in women’s soccer, it’s different. On Sept. 22, members of FC Kansas City and the Seattle Reign — both clubs in the National Women’s Soccer League — remained in the locker room during the anthem. In the MLB, Bruce Maxwell of the Oakland Athletics was the first MLB player to take a knee during the National Team on Sept. 24. According to The Root and the Associated Press, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver told teams that he “expects” players and coaches to stand for the National Anthem. However, players in the NBA are still defying Trump. Golden State Warriors point guard Stephen Curry announced that he wouldn’t make

the trip to the White House to celebrate Golden State’s 2017 NBA Finals win. Trump responded by rescinding the invitation. Doesn’t Trump know that’s basically telling someone who already quit that they’re fired? Many fans are calling for all of these athletes protesting to “stick with sports.” However, that’s exactly the opposite of what they should do. Arguably, athletes are some of the most prominent figures in the United States. Curry, Rapinoe, Kaepernick and so many others have huge followings, and that creates a platform for them. Instead of just “sticking to sports” these athletes are using their platform to make a
difference, and potentially make a change. Clearly, there is a racial divide in America, and seeing Caucasian and African American athletes linking arms must mean something. Instead of typing on Twitter, Trump could make a change happen too, if he really wanted. However, he’s lost favor with minorities a long time ago, and Charlottesville and his response to the NFL/sports world protests certainly isn’t helping. So athletes, don’t just stick to sports. Use the platform that you’ve been rewarded with. And finally, this isn’t a protest against the flag, national anthem or the military. It never was. It’s a protest against racial injustice, inequality and prejudice.

Its purpose represents something mightily wholesome and rebellious: protection of speech that is unpopular, regardless of faith. This ecosystem of ideas was established to follow in the structure of the free market, to commit that all ideas may and can exist unfettered and unregulated. But, like the free market with goods and services of poor quality, ideas and beliefs that are inherently negative or poor in nature will make face with ultimate failure among the masses. The acceptance of this interpretation begs the question furthermore: that although a form of speech is simply allowed and exercised, is it morally just and proper in nature? On Aug. 26, 2016, former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sent shockwaves throughout an already polarized political climate, sitting during the National Anthem to protest in support of “people who are being oppressed.” His act sparked controversy throughout the NFL, as he further escalated his rhetoric, going as far as wearing socks depicting police officers as pigs during warmups, and even wearing a t-shirt praising communist Cuban dictator Fidel Castro, who had headed a regime believed to have killed up to 141,000 people. His acts of protest made massive headlines and had earned the respect of “Black Lives Matter” activists like Shaun King and DeRay Mckesson, and although being released by the 49ers earlier this year and having yet to receive a contract, Kaepernick’s left-wing political activism
has done all but ceased. With the 2017 NFL season finally getting back into play, football fans and political commentators alike were prepared for yet another season of grandstanding and protest following Kapernick’s exit. The most current controversies however, sparked as a result of remarks made by President Donald Trump at an Alabama rally for Senate incumbent Luther Strange, where he stated that players who sat for the National Anthem should be “off the field” or “fired” by their owners for disrespecting their organization and country. Games following these remarks were responded with massive protests from players and team administrations, many locking arms, kneeling, or not even leaving their locker room in response to the president’s remarks. With this flurry of controversy and confusion, some may ask: is this legal? Is this right? Of course, protesting the National Anthem is entirely legal, as it should be. However, as they have a right to protest, we as Americans have a right to criticize, and I myself feel that it is wrong, inappropriate, and ultimately inefficient for these athletes to be sitting during our nation’s anthem. The history of the National Anthem at sporting events begins with a moment of national unity, when the Boston Red Sox stood in support of our nation during a time of bloody battle: World War I. This very establishment, in and of itself, represents the true reason we began standing in the first place. The United States of America is a diverse and mighty melting pot — a nation with people of many different backgrounds and identities. But one identity we share, regardless of our physical or ideological differences, is our American identity. In respecting our flag and performing civic rituals such as standing for the National Anthem, we are joining as one strong and united people, undivided. Although these players have the right to
kneel or sit, a right that should be protected wholeheartedly, as decent and powerful people striving to fight for equality and patriotism, shouldn’t do so. Since World War I, our nation has remained one in conflict, and since then, we’ve lost nearly 675,000 military personnel on the battlefield, and they weren’t white, black, brown or yellow — they were Americans. Upon receiving the brutal wounds of their demise, they shed the same red blood in defense of our liberties. They served their nation and their flag, and standing for the Anthem to respect their legacies is a small price to pay for their sacrifice. There is no doubt that there are instances of police brutality and racial discrimination in this country today, dramatized and inflated or not, there are other ways to protest these apparent injustices than treading on the very idea they claim they are fighting for: unity. Protest peacefully where you see injustice, lay down resources or capital (of which these millionaire athletes have plenty of ) in support of your cause. Sitting during the National Anthem is nothing more than misguided virtue signaling in the name of a strawman solution. It doesn’t solve anything, realistically, and its history has shown that it only further divides people on the basis of identity. A Reuters poll had found that over 72 percent of Americans do not support kneeling during the National Anthem, regardless of reason. At nearly every game where a multitude of players or team organizers kneeled during the anthem, boos echoed throughout the entire stadium. Without a doubt, it is a wildly unpopular voice in a loud, bustling marketplace of ideas, but nevertheless, let the players sit. The market will determine their fate. Americans are striving for harmony now more than ever. If we remain strong in our beliefs and promise, there is no doubt that this attempt to trample on our unity will fail.

Where is the line between sports and politics? By Shalene Hixon, Staff Writer HIX3821@calu.edu The last few weeks have caused quite a stir within the world of sports. President Donald Trump’s recent comments regarding NFL players protesting the National Anthem and disinviting the NBA Champion Golden State Warriors to the White House has divided the nation — and even the Pittsburgh Steelers and Penguins fanbase. The Steelers chose not to come out for the National Anthem before their regular season game against the Chicago Bears, the first team to do so, while the Stanley Cup Champion Penguins announced they would still visit the White House. Regarding the Steelers’ actions, I personally do not have a problem with what they did. Coach Mike Tomlin said that this wasn’t about “disrespecting the flag” or anything like that, it was about team solidarity. If any of his players wanted to kneel in protest, he didn’t want them being singled out by the media for doing so. All Tomlin and the team wanted to worry about was playing football, not politics. Regarding the Penguins’ announcement, while I don’t like it, I still respect their decision unlike many. It has always been a tradition in hockey like many sports to visit the White House when a team wins a championship. The Penguins could care less who is President, they just want to continue tradition and stay neutral on a topic that is dividing many. I think this is what both teams were trying to do, focus more on the sport they play while trying to stay out of the politics. However, they have been met with hatred and backlash from even their own fans. Many fans have threatened to get rid of their season tickets, burn merchandise and overall boycott the teams for what they did. Quite frankly, I think it is utterly ridiculous. People are so quick to judge and have knee-jerk reactions about topics like this without taking a moment to understand

the situation and what is really going on. A good portion of the people who are making these claims will end up watching games again, buy more merchandise and continue to be a fan. That’s just basic human nature; more often than not people will forget and act like nothing happened. While a lot of this was happening I kept thinking, “Sports and politics need to be kept separate, they have no business being together.” Unfortunately, I know this will never happen but there has to be a limit to how much these two can be mixed. Right now, you can’t go onto any social media post about the Steelers or Penguins without seeing people getting political. More often than not, the teams’ social media pages are just trying to focus on the next game or something related to it. Politics don’t always need to be brought up, especially on a completely unrelated post. Yelling at the team and belittling them on social media
is going to get you nowhere, it’s not going to change their opinions or actions. They made their choices and now it’s your turn to at least respect them, even if you don’t agree, or walk away from the keyboard. For many people, myself included, sports are a safe haven to escape the stresses of everyday life. I just want to watch a hockey, football or baseball game and cheer on my teams, not be bombarded left and right by politics. The amount of hatred and closed-mindedness I have seen the last few weeks has been disheartening. The words of one man have turned friends, families and even strangers against each other over something that should be bringing them together. A line needs to be drawn somewhere, politics has a time and a place to be discussed but I think to a degree sports shouldn’t be where the conversation takes place.

Vulcans record shutout at Mansfield, 2-0
By Alex King, Sports Information
The California University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer team claimed a 2-0 victory over Mansfield in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Saturday afternoon. With the win, Cal U moves to 2-7-1 overall behind a 2-6-1 mark in conference action. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers fall to 0-8-1 this season, matching their record in the league play. The Vulcans nearly got on the board at the 5:50-mark when freshman Kiley Austin (Orchard Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart Academy) hit the crossbar before classmate Carilyn Pasierb (Chambersburg, Pa./Chambersburg) shot went wide left of the net. Cal U got on the board in the 10th minute when freshman Anna Billey (Mount Pleasant, Pa./Mount Pleasant) notched her first career goal from 10 yards out into the right-hand corner of the net. Mansfield looked to level late in the first half, but senior Michaela Colon (Montgomery Village, Md./Gaithersburg)
made the save. The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead into halftime with a 13-6 advantage on shots, in addition to an 8-1 edge in corner kicks. Cal U remained on the attack, registering four shots in the opening minutes of the second half. Mansfield attempted to equal the score at the 73:19-mark when Colon came up with another save to maintain the lead. Freshman Zana Ross (Seville, Ohio/Cloverleaf ) led the team with six shots, including back-to-back attempts, late in the second half. The Vulcans added an insurance goal in the 87th minute when Pasierb scored on a rebound off the goalie. Colon registered a pair of saves in the shutout victory while playing all 90 minutes. Cal U out-shot Mansfield by a 28-11 margin, recording 17 shots on goal, and finished with a 15-2 edge on corner kicks. California falls in top 20 match up to Slippery Rock By Daniel Beeck, Sports Editor BEE1558@calu.edu The California Vulcans traveled to Slippery Rock this past weekend to take on the No. 18 ranked Rock in a match-up that pitted two of the toughest teams in the PSAC against one another. The Vulcans came into the contest on a four game win streak, handling their first PSAC West opponent, Seton Hill, the week prior. The defense for California was in the spotlight after allowing the Griffins to sneak back into the game with 27 second half points. The passing game for Slippery Rock was the major focus for head coach Gary Dunn and the Vulcans, as Tanner Garry came into the game ranked third in the nation for passing yards, and second in the nation with passing touchdowns. With an average of four touchdowns a game, the secondary for California was locked and loaded to limit his abilities. The opening possessions for both sides led to points for California, as Michael Keir delievered a pass into the awaiting arms of Tyson Hill to get on the board after almost four minutes of possession. Lamont McPhatter registered his fourth
consecutive game with an interception on a pick-six from the arm of Tanner Garry. California would then extend their lead to 17-0 from the leg of Will Brazill, before allowing 10 unanswered points before the halftime whistles blew. Slippery Rock halted the offense for the Vulcans on the first drive of the second half, and took advantage on their next possession, with Tanner Garry connecting with Andrew Bridgeforth for his first touchdown strike of the game. Tying up the game at 17, California answered right back with a Jalen Bell run from two yards out after a two play drive. Back-to-back scores from Slippery Rock made the score 30-24 with a few ticks left before the third quarter came to a close. Will Brazill then drilled his second field goal of the game from 38 yards out to close the gap to three. Chacar Berry scored on a 21 yard run for the Rock to extend their lead, before California scored three times on the Slippery Rock defense. The scoring was led by Jimmy Wheeler who ran the ball into the end zone from one yard, and 14
yards out. Will Brazill also hit his third field goal of the contest, extending his streak of three made field goals in a game to two consecutive weeks. Milly Raye for the Rock would haul in a 24 yard pass to tie the score up at 44, eventually sending the game to overtime after Michael Keir kneel. California had their progress stunted on the opening possession of OT, and Will Brazill missed a field goal to give the Rock a chance to close out the contest. Jake Chapla would do just that a few plays later, after sending a 36 yard field goal through the uprights to knock off the No. 5 ranked team in the nation. California has now dropped to No. 16 with the loss, and the Rock moved up to the No. 12 spot. California has not won in Slippery Rock since 2009, and the Rock are now 31-9 when playing under the lights. The Vulcans now set their sights on Indiana University of Pennsylvania this weekend for the ninth-annual coal bowl at 2 p.m. The game will be aired on ESPN3, along with the live radio feed via WCAL 91.9 fm.

Mon Valley celebrates Hockeyville, USA By Colin Kirkwood, Staff Writer KIR6842@calu.edu
Every year, Kraft runs a competition to locate the most passionate hockey community in the United States. When this year’s campaign began, the Rostraver Ice Garden just so happened to be one of the rinks that made the cut. This was the beginning of a long and seemingly impossible journey to become the recipient of a generous donation of $150,000 to upgrade the Ice Garden. The fate of the rink then fell into the hands of the community, and the community came to aid their beloved ice rink and then some. The votes poured in from all across the western part of the state, including plenty of people close to home here at California University of Pennsylvania. The hockey teams started to get the word out from the beginning, using the hashtag “#WinForMurph”. This spread like wildfire, and soon enough, the campus fell in line prompting help from many clubs and organizations. The effort even grew large enough for the Penguins to chime in and help pull
in votes. Together, the Belle Vernon community earned the title of Hockeyville, USA for their hometown rink. Winning the prize did bring more to the community besides just the rink upgrades. The other grand prize that came with winning this esteemed title is the chance to host an NHL preseason game. Sadly, the NHL decided that the Ice Garden was not qualified to host the game, so it was moved to the Penguins practice facility in Cranberry, PA. This didn’t put a damper on things in any way though. A morning practice session instead was the solution to the dilemma. With the entire facility being filled to capacity, and extra standing room tickets being awarded through the lottery system, it was a smash hit. The celebration kicked off on Thursday with an event on campus where meals for the less fortunate were assembled by local high school students. The Stanley Cup also made a visit to campus from
the perched seat of a firetruck. It then made a short stop for photos before it was sent to the Ice Garden. Friday saw a Gala at the Convocation Center that sported a casino theme. This event housed casino games and live/silent auctions with profits going to the Mon Valley Ice Project. Saturday got the Belle Vernon community involved with a 5k race and parade with a youth game and fun fair at the rink later in the day. As for how the prize money was dispersed, many key elements of the rink were enhanced. One of the main upgrades was new LED lighting and double the capacity of them. Other upgrades included new lobby flooring, locker room tune-ups, new Zamboni controls, and cooling system enhancements. Even more upgrades came from the funds like protective netting around the rink, new piping under the floor, new kickboards around the rink, and a laser ice leveling system.
