Singers, Rappers, Bands, and Poets: The Underground Cafe By Bri Hendrikson, Staff Writer The traveling open mic night, which occurs every Thursday from 9 p.m. to midnight at various locations around campus, is home to California University of Pennsylvania artists who live for the freedom of expression. Student bands like HearTonight, Soulios, andTheVics are names you will frequently hear introduced to the mic on a normal Thursday night at the Underground. A club that has a history of collaborating with other organizations on campus including the Student Activities Board, Black Student Union and Greek Life, the UG Cafe gives students an opportunity to let their voices be heard in a brief 10-15 minute set. No matter if you are a performer or just a lover of entertainment and music, the UG Cafe has something to offer that will leave you coming back for more. That is what really sets the organization apart from others on campus. “We truly embrace everyone’s creativity,” Underground Cafe’s Social Media and Marketing Chair Cheyanne White said.“We try our best to provide a safe environment for everyone to express themselves.”

The open environment that provides individuals with the opportunity to express themselves is one of Underground Cafe Student Advisor Dan Carmichael’s favorite things about the weekly event. Carmichael, who has been attending shows at the Underground since he was a freshman at Cal U in 2011, shared that being a part of the organization as both a member and now their student advisor has opened doors for him. It has also given him the knowledge to guide the organization this year and help build social and networking skills for his future career. “I want to work within the music industry on the event planning side of things one day,” Carmichael said. “It [The Underground] has helped me connect with a wide variety of professionals. I have worked with so many musicians and talent agencies that I feel like I have a better understanding of how the industry works.” As much as the UG Cafe has provided for those within the club, it has also given those who perform at the weekly open mic nights

life long memories and countless opportunities on a bigger platform to share their skills. Hear Tonight, a five member Indie Rock band from California, Pa., is no stranger to the Underground Cafe scene. The band, who released their debut album ‘Take Your Time’ in June and will be opening up for Jesse McCartney on Oct. 6, is a frequent and friendly face to the Underground Cafe stage. Lead singer, Shane Turner, a Commercial Music Technology major at Cal U, even gives the organization some recognition for the band’s success. “Without Underground, I doubt we’d have been able to make nearly as much of a name for ourselves around Cal,” he said. “Underground is such a welcoming outlet for performers to show their talents to their peers.” This semester is packed full of good vibes, good music and an overall good time with feature artists, collaborations with other organizations and a chance for you, the students, to express yourself in a handful of different ways. Upcoming events include: September 22- Open Mic with free Tye Dye Pillow Cases sponsored by SAB September 29- Open Mic at Vulcan Village with a candy bar October 6- Jesse McCartney Concert in Convocation Center October 13- Throwback Night October 20- Feature artist: Nine Deeez Night October 27- Feature artist: Eh 440 November 3: Hip Hop Night November 10- Feature Artist- Jon Fisher Novemebr 17- Acoustic Night December 1- Open Mic: Winter Wonderland December 8- Semester Finale Looking for an outlet where your voice can be heard or just the chance to get involved? Trump, Clinton prepare for general election debates By Cameron King, Staff Writer Following a historically heated presidential primary race, party nominees Donald J. Trump, the renowned business mogul, and Hillary Clinton, the former Secretary of State, have provided everything short of the perhaps the filthiest, most headstrong general election campaign for the world’s highest office that Americans have seen to date. As customary in most elections, the 2016 presidential race will include three main debates between both Trump and Clinton, and one debate between the two candidates’ vice presidential running mates, Indiana Gov. Mike Pence and Virginia Sen. Tim Kaine. Both candidates have outlined precisely how they both are conducting their debate preparation. Clinton, in an August interview on “Jimmy Kimmel Live”, stated that she had “watched all of his [Trump’s] debates during the primaries and he insulted all of his opponents, all of the moderators, and about 80% of the American people and the rest of the world.” An official Democratic source also reported that the Clinton campaign has approximately 25 researchers working to construct and file opposing statements that push against Trump, even going as far as consulting psychology experts to help frame scenarios that enable and create missteps for the Republican nominee. They have also continued their recent talks with Tony Schwartz, co-writer of Trump’s best-selling business title, The Art of the Deal, attempting to withdraw those same psychological weaknesses that Schwartz had dealt with during his writing of the book. These tactics, up front, appear to be a bit of a stretch compared to the businessman’s personal debate preparation. In an interview on Fox News’ “The O’Reilly Factor”, Trump simply exclaimed “I think they [the debates] will be very important. I don’t know if it’s make-or-break, but I’ve done well in the debates. We had seventeen other people, I’m the one that survived and I’ve enjoyed the debating process.” Though Trump has also stated that he is working closely with his advisors, he is also wary of overpreparing, fearing that, like Clinton, he may sound too scripted due to overthinking and complicating

Photo: CNN a fairly straight-forward process. In addition to this, however, sources are also saying that media magnate and founder of Fox News Channel, Roger Ailes, has reportedly attended at least two of Trump’s debate preparation sessions. Throughout the last few decades, Ailes has been a valuable companion in terms of media strategy. From TV-readying Richard Nixon, to debate coaching both Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush in the 1980s, he has consistently proven that media preparation is not only his profession, but his appropriate forte. Aside from their general preparation, both candidates have made it quite clear that they not only have plans to stay substantive and on-message, but that there will be plenty of mudslinging to supplement their standard debate banter. New York’s Hofstra University will be the headquarters of the first debate, on September 26th, and will be moderated by NBC’s Lester Holt. The second debate, featuring Pence and Kaine, will take place October 4th, and will be moderated by CBS News’ Elaine Quijano. The third, jumping back to the nominees, will be on the 9th of October, and will not only be co-

moderated by both CNN’s Anderson Cooper and ABC’s Martha Raddatz, but will feature off-stage questioning from audience participants. The final debate, ten days later on October th 19 , will be hosted by Fox News’ Chris Wallace. All four of these events will be broadcasted live via C-SPAN, ABC, CBS, FOX, and NBC, respectively, as well as all cable news networks including CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC, in addition. Observing the significance of these debates, we can simply examine at the impact left by those before us – whether it’d be former vice-presidential candidate Lloyd Bentsen’s “Senator, you are no Jack Kennedy” assertion, or President Ronald Reagan’s all-time famous “there you go again” bit, it is apparent that the influence held by nationally televised debates is incredibly substantial, and with a race like this, being undoubtedly one of the most

unconventional presidential elections in U.S. history, it can be safely assumed that these

debates will be nothing short of the same.

Faculty vote to call strike at 14 Pennsylvania universities Associated Press

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Faculty members at Pennsylvania’s 14 state universities have voted to call for a strike, but the union representing them said Monday they’ll keep working with the state system to resolve their disagreements, calling a strike a “last resort.” Over 90 percent of union faculty members who voted favored authorizing a strike, the Association of Pennsylvania State College and University Faculties announced in a statement. Over 80 percent of union members participated in the vote, the union said. “The vast majority of faculty clearly grasp the seriousness of the situation,” union president Kenneth Mash said in a statement. However, he added the faculty leaders will not set a strike date until they meet for negotiations at least once more, adding “a strike remains the last resort.”

The union represents about 5,500 faculty and coaches at Bloomsburg, California, Cheyney, Clarion, East Stroudsburg, Edinboro, Indiana, Kutztown, Lock Haven, Mansfield, Millersville, Shippensburg, Slippery Rock, and West Chester universities. Coaches will vote on strike authorization on Wednesday and Thursday. The union members are objecting to a number of the state system’s proposals including: having employees pay more toward the cost of their health insurance premiums; The system also wants temporary faculty to teach an additional course per semester, cuts to the lowest-paid faculty members’ salaries, and to no longer provide retiree health care coverage for future faculty members. Kenn Marshall, a spokesman for the system, said Monday they are determined to stay at the table

with the union to resolve their issues and “assure our students have uninterrupted access to a highquality, affordable education.” “While we understand the latest APCSUF vote moves the faculty union one step closer to being able to call a potential strike, we remain committed to bargaining with APSCUF to achieve an agreement that is fair to everyone.” The next negotiation session is set for Friday. Faculty members have been working without a contract since the last agreement expired in June 2015.

Introducing the iPhone 7 By Morgan Courtwright, Staff Writer At long last, the iPhone 7 and the iPhone 7 plus is here. On September 7th at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium in San Francisco, Apple released their most innovative iPhone yet. Along with the newest iPhone, Apple released a new Apple Watch conveniently named, Series 2, and will be available to the public on September 16th. Apple released a new software update and new “AirBuds” that are earbuds that work via Bluetooth. They are coming out with two new colors, black and jet black. The iPhone is coming with a slew of new updates. First, and most shocking to most consumers, is that Apple has removed the 3.5mm headphone jack and has replaced it with a full speaker on the bottom of the phone. They have increased the single speaker from previous models to one on the top and one speaker on the bottom as mentioned before. This allows for surround sound and a better quality of sound for the user. The good news is that the 7 and the 7 plus will be coming with headphones that will be able to plug in to the lightening port. But, if Bluetooth “AirBuds” sound appealing, prepare to spend $160 on this accessory.

Apple has increased the quality of their camera as well. On the iPhone 7 it has a single camera with advanced systems. The 12-megapixal camera features optical image stabilization, a 28mm wide angle lens with a f/1.8 aperture, and a high speed sensor that is 60 percent faster than before. The iPhone 7 Plus has a better rear camera, though. It uses the same camera as the iPhone 7, but there’s another 12-megapixel camera next to it. This one is a 56mm-telephoto lens with an f/2.8 aperture. All of that is just fancy talk basically saying that Apple is bringing their A-game when it comes to their cameras. Apple is now releasing its first ever water-proof model with the iPhone 7 and 7 plus. It is dust resistant and has a reinvented home button with “ForceTouch.” Force-touch is what has been featured in the iPhone 6 displays. It uses 3D processors that allows the phone differientiate the pressure the user is applying to the screen in order to carry out various tasks. Apple is now brining that technology to the home button. It will still have the classic home button feature, only revamped.

Along with all of its physical updates, Apple had also released iOS 10; it was abailable to users on September 13th. iOS 10 is “crisp, fresh, and different.” The animations are completely different and there are loads of new features. In short, iOS 10 brings a fresh look to everything we thought Apple was capable of before. Even with Apple’s newest iPhone release being weeks old, there are already predictions about the iPhone 8. It will be radically different than any other model so far, the home button will be gone and will “appear like a single sheet of glass.” This would mean that the Touch ID sensor would be embedded in the screen. Now about the prices and what actually will be coming with the iPhone. The 7 starts out at a cool $649 and for the first time there will no longer be a 16 GB option. Instead the phone will be available in 32GB, 128GB, and 256GB; the 7 plus starts out at $769. In the box will be the iPhone in your choosing. It will have its charger and the updates earbuds as well. More information about all the upgrade options are available at Apple’s main page.

Schmilco- Wilco

“Schmilco” is the tenth studio album released by Wilco, a six-man band that was formed in 1994 out of Chicago, Illinois. Since their formation, members have since left and new ones have come around to fill their places. By 2005, the band has had the same six members as they have now. Over that time, six other members have been a part of the group. In their 12 years of performing, only two members, Jeff Tweedy and John Stirratt have remained constant members. The band has a calming sound but your main focus should be the lyrics when listening to them. That much can definitely be said for this, their newest album. “Schmilco” is quiet but it is by no means intended to be used as background music. Through my first listen, I paid little attention to what was actually happening and let it play in the background. In my second listen, I realized that I needed to just sit down and let it play. I will say, for someone expecting a little more upbeat music, this may be boring for you to even try to listen to. You can find small tendencies of folk music behind their typical alternative rock sound. With every note hit, whether it be from guitar or vocals, it feels smooth. Only on their song “Locator” do you feel some more pent up aggression. The music is much faster paced on this track. Almost to the extent that it does not really fit into the rest of the album. As someone who tries to find meaning in things, I feel like they put this in the album because they are sharing their feelings and everyone eventually loses it and has to let out a yell from inside. This track was their “yell.” Average Critic Rating: 81/100 My Rating: 80/100

Acoustic Recordings 1998-2016 – Jack White Jack White is one of the most innovative people in the music industry right now. Something that helps make Jack innovative in this modern world is his ability to still create interest in vinyl records. For a few examples, White has made it so records play backwards so the needle moves outward instead of inward. He has also etched a hologram into his most recent solo album, Lazaretto. When spinning, you can see an angel spin about the record. Jack has also made vinyl records that are fully flexible and can be bent and twisted and still play fine. If you find this at all interesting, please do some research on some of the other things he has done. Now back to the album at hand. This can be taken in as a type of, “best of,” album for his acoustic songs. What I especially enjoy about this is that it ranges from his songs with the White Stripes, Raconteurs and solo works. White is one of the last true “rock stars” of our generation and he is also an incredible wordsmith. While most of the songs featured are almost identical to songs on previous albums, you will be able to find some exclusive content never before heard. If purchased in CD format, you will receive two discs. The first contains 14 songs, all of which are from his days with the White Stripes. The second disc will contain 12 songs that were either solo works or done with his other band, the Raconteurs. With a combined total of 26 songs, this is the perfect easy listening album. You will be able to see how jack White matured throughout his years of making music. For the die-hard fans of Jack White, you must buy this album as it is great for your collection.Just make sure you buy a hard copy. For a general fan of music, give this a listen. You will hear songs that are very popular and others that you probably have never heard. Average Critic Rating: 83/100 My Rating: 85/100

Good Luck Bridgit! By Joshua Proud, Staff Writer Do you remember the beautiful blonde girl named Bridgit Mendler from Disney? Bridgit Mendler had her debut on the Disney Channel as Juliet Van Heusen on the hit show Wizards Of Waverly Place in 2009. Bridgit then landed a lead role in the popular Disney show “Good Luck Charlie” in 2010. Good Luck Charlie was so popular that it got renewed for a fourth season. This was a big deal because Disney Channel shows usually only last three seasons. During the month of October in 2012, Bridget released her first studio album featuring songs such as “Ready or Not’ and “Hurricane” both of which have millions of listens on Spotify. During a guest appearance on the Ellen Show, Bridgit was crowned the “new queen of Disney” when Ellen Degeneres gifted her a crown and a sash. Bridgit left Disney in 2014 and began her breakaway from adolescent entertainment. On November 25th, 2014 Bridgit landed a role in a new NBC sitcom called “Undateable.” Undateable lasted three consecutive seasons but ultimately was cancelled due to lack of viewers. This did not discourage Bridgit because as of recently she is currently producing new music for the first time in almost five years. Bridgit released her new single titled “Atlantis” on August 25th. Atlantis had not even been out for more than two weeks and the single has already reached

Photo: Google Images over one million streams on Spotify. Mendler released a statement that she is currently mixing her new and upcoming EP that’s scheduled to be released this November on Election Day. Many of Bridgit’s fans are ecstatic that after almost five years, the artist decided to take a break from television and pursue her singing career. On behalf of Bridgit, is it safe to say that she has completely altered her sound. Back in 2013, Mendler had told reporters that she was working on an album, and she performed many

of these songs live but they were never recorded. Bridgit claimed that she had the entire album recorded, but it was accidently deleted and she was forced to start from scratch. There are conversations all over social media that this is a white lie, most likely because the artist, Bridgit Mendler, ultimately decided to reinvent her sound. Bridgit Mendler’s new EP, that is expected to release on Election Day, is her most anticipated project yet. Fans are restless waiting to hear what else she has to share with the world.

S E P T. 1 6 - 2 2 Jonathan Hershey, Staff Writer, says: A mystery, thriller and animated movie all in one surpassed expectations and further affirming Disney’s excellence in children film making. Zootopia is not only a great film but has a better story to tell about us as humans despite our species being excluded from the movie. It shows us how to work together despite our different backgrounds, races and stereotypes. A bunny unafraid of being the first of her kind to take on an unfamiliar area with a fox shows us how using the best skills of each individual can be used to each other’s benefit. I give this film an 89/100.

Making the Case for Clinton By Joe Albert, Contributor

In an election year with scathing rhetoric, extreme policy proposals and scandals from left and right, it is hard for moderates on both sides to feel excited or hopeful about the two candidates. From the right, Donald Trump has isolated the GOP into a wing of demagoguery, racism, and extreme economic policies that would not only hurt the middle class, but the poor and the countries well being. On the Left, Clinton’s pandering continues to put rural areas into the dark, and completely ignores the fact that higher taxes equals less income inequality.

“That’s like choosing if you want to be shot or poisoned.” Senator Lyndsey Graham perhaps put the election best. When asked whether he would support Cruz or Trump, Mr. Graham responded, “Thats Like choosing if you want to be shot or poisoned.” To many moderates, including myself that is the same feeling and sentiment that is true now. I must admit, that I am more bias to center left politics. And while personally I feel that President Obama has put the country in the right direction economically, and fiscally, I am sympathetic to the far rights cry of heavy taxes, burdensome regulations, and the sentiment that the government no longer works for the common good. And In some odd distorted way, I can therefore understand the push and pull of Mr. Trump, a man who is untamed and irreverent to the system that he pulls people in by the idea that some sort of change, if any is good, even if that change would put the nation on a backwards path. But, as moderates, and I think I can say this for both sides, it’s the bigger picture that counts. Moderate Republican and Democrats both understand one thing and that’s looking down the road when it comes to policies. That compromise, as well as slow and steady progress, is more effective than fast and quick idealism and that is why I, intend to Vote for Hillary Clinton in 2016. This is not because I agree with her on every issue. I don’t. Nor that I think she is trustworthy, or honest or in this case would make a remotely good president. I don’t. But I do believe that she is sincere,

PHOTO: GOOGLE

and she would continue the great debate between right and left alive.

My message simply here to Republicans is: you have a lot less to lose with Ms. Clinton. You have everything to lose with Donald Trump. My message to Democrats: you have a lot to gain with Ms. Clinton, and a lot to lose with Donald Trump. My message simply here to Republicans is: you have a lot less to lose with Ms. Clinton. You have everything to lose with Donald Trump. My message to Democrats: you have a lot to gain with Ms. Clinton, and a lot to lose with Donald Trump. With Secretary Clinton, Republicans would gain another chance to win over Latinos, and African Americans. It also would allow them to keep trying to sell the ideas of conservatism, instead of succumbing to the twisted conservative flavor that Donald Trump has. The second feature of interest in this case, is that Ms. Clinton seems to be headed in the direction of, simply put, a third Obama Term. During Obama’s tenure, Republicans and the GOP have faired well

in Senate, House and Governorship races. While the GOP has seen set backs from the Affordable Care Act and a more limited foreign policy, a Clinton policy gives the GOP leadership a clear ability to incentivize voters to turn out in midterms and even in 2020. Clearly, with policies and rhetoric the same, which is center left politics, the GOP and Conservative values will still be the main agenda at least for moderate Republicans. Last but not least, a Donald Trump victory would destroy the brand of conservatism and the GOP completely for at least a generation. It is tempting to think that the U.S. Congress would control Trump, or keep him at bay, but if history is a lesson, we’ve seen that to be completely the opposite. The fact that GOP leadership, once so incredibly and publicly against Mr. Trump is now supporting him with hesitancy shows Trump cannot be controlled. It is no secret that the GOP has struggled with voters of ethnicity, the poor and women. Trump has surprisingly been able to insult every single group that I mentioned, and somehow added in Gold Star families, and the disabled all for the sheer heck of it. The upstanding bearers of conservatism seem most likely to fold in front of Trump. Speaker Ryan, as we’ve seen would not stand up, nor would Senator Graham or any of Mitch McConnell. In other words, the Republican party as a lot more to gain with four years of Clinton, and a lot to lose with four years of Trump.

Why Black Lives Matter By Angel Funk, Staff Writer

Whether it’s heard in the news because of famous names like Colin Kaepernick sitting during the national anthem or tragic events like the death of Eric Garner, the movement “Black Lives Matter” is taking America and the world by storm. However, with such a powerful declaration other statements such as “All Lives Matter” come into conversation. But I challenge that statement. In order for all lives to matter, black lives have to matter first. America can be mad at Colin Kaepernick because he sat during the national anthem but fail to remember perhaps the most memorable woman of the civil right movement, Rosa Parks. Rosa refused to stand because she was sick and tired of a system that oppressed African Americans during her time

and Kaepernick has done the same. Some may chose to make the argument that it was disrespectful of him in terms of all of the men and women that have given their lives for our country but I challenge that as well. Any veteran who has served our country didn’t do so with anything other than defending freedom in their hearts. Is it freedom if any person of color is still oppressed in the year 2016? The answer is simple, no. Instead we must be progressive in the fight for freedom, for all human beings to be treated equally regardless of color. If we want to achieve peace prejudice has to stop. We live in a society where we praise presidential candidates who are actively endorsed by organizations such as neo-Nazis and the Ku

Klux Klan but fail to prosecute the people who kill innocent Black men and women. Black men and women are affected by institutional racism in every aspect in our society today. If a name on a resume appears “white” the resume will receive 30 percent more callbacks than “ethnic” names. None of this sounds or looks like equality. If anything can come from the most recent revival of the Black Lives Matter movement I hope Americans will become more informed. This article just touches the surfaces of issues affecting Black Americans in our society. Colin Kaepernick has set an example for not only other athletes to stand up for what they believe in but that all of us should as well.

Islamaphobia in France? By Zachary Filtz, Staff Writer

Fighting radical terrorists is not an easy task for governments to overtake. But fighting discriminatory actions by a city against all Muslim women who enjoy swimming should never, ever work in relation to fighting potential terrorist attacks. Fueling the agendas of a government seeking an “easy” way of preventing Muslim people to swim or even those who just enjoy being outside, a court in Nice, France suspended a ban that prevented any women wearing a burkini—a type of swimsuit covering most skin and leaving room for the face, hands, feet—last week. The Nice court found it unconstitutional, but it was not clear if the city could go through with the controversial ban in the near future. While I am thankful that this ban was found unconstitutional in that country, it worries me if such an act could ever be done on a city- or statelevel here in the U.S. According to CNN, the case was brought by the Collective Against Islamophobia. The Collective Against Islamophobia is a group of human rights activists who have been helping a

number of women challenge fines brought on by the Islamophobic actions of the city.

While the ban comes in the context of the Paris terrorist attacks by ISIS several months ago, banning people from exercising their freedom of religion is not only uncalled for, it will likely separate the country over the issue. Other than creating divisions, I have written before that Islam is a very peaceful religion. The ISIS groups completely change historical verses in the Qur’an, and make small, violence-driven faction. To me, it is the American equivalent of the Christian factions who showed up at abortion clinics and killed the doctors and nurses assisting with the abortion in the 1980s. I’m sorry if that offends you, but it should never be the right of any small faction

claiming to be “religious” to kill people in cold blood. Period. That is a fact, and needs to be learned to be accepted by the easy-thinking Americans in our country *and* Nice, France, from where this horrible act of discrimination started. Although this is an opinion article, I believe there is space in this argument to be objective. France maintains strict separation of church and state, according to a March 2015 NPR interview with a few Muslims living in France. “In France today, it’s really hard to practice a religion, whatever it is,” said Anisa Enni, one of the Muslim broadcast interviewees. “It’s not just Islam.” That quote is striking to me—while the French government claims to support religious diversity, this other side of a Muslim resident of France makes me want to protest such political “doctrine.” I think that we should live in a free world where people can feel comfortable exercising their religious practices. That should go even if one’s religion requires them to dress very modestly. Long live freedom.

The B u siness of Fantasy Football

By Jeremy Hall, Contributor

The New York Post predicts that nearly 75 million people will play fantasy football this year. We all love Captain American, Budweiser, pizza, and playing cornhole. Of course we love fantasy football. For years this industry has been thought of as purely entertainment and non-profit. That is unless you’re playing in a high stakes league with your friends or coworkers. The truth is fantasy football is fun and it makes Sundays much more enjoyable for your average fan. However, there has been a plot twist to this story in sports in the last few years. Industries have begun to take over fantasy football, those industries include multimillion dollar corporations such as Draftkings and Fanduel. These are one week fantasy football sites where players can pick new rosters every week and have multiple entries per week. Some lobbies cost as much as $100 to enter while others are as little as $1. The point is to pick the best lineup based on matchup and stay under the cap that is allotted to you. Stay under the cap with the best team possible and come out with the highest score to win as much cash as possible. Sounds harmless right? Well, the problem with sites like these is too many people see this not as entertainment but rather as gambling. Fanduel CFO Matt King says that gambling is not a word they prefer to use when talking about the business of their industry, saying “it is purely entertainment.” In an interview with Frontline, King defended his stance saying “daily fantasy sports is truly a game of skill, the more you practice the better you get.” Fanduel and Draftkings have combined net worth of well over 350 million dollars, with Fanduel being worth an estimated 275 million itself. But the sad fact is that the business King and others are in such as Draftkings attract a certain crowd. That crowd consists of what many consider addicts. Someone who is an “addict” is predictable. In this case, they find something (like Fanduel) that they can win money on and they will continue to spend money till they see positive results. Unfortunately for these people, results usually end up in large financial loss. This has been pushed so hard through the legislative system that the state

PHOTO: DRAFT KINGS of New York went to battle with these industries. They filed a lawsuit against Fanduel and Draftkings for “false advertising” and for “wagering something of value for things the consume cannot control” aka (gambling). The lawsuit was eventually settled after over a year of court hearings. So even though money can be won or lost by doing this, it is still legal to do according to federal law. A key component to this being possible is that fantasy football is a key contributor for the NFL being the unanimous #1 sport in the U.S today. Fantasy football, unlike baseball, basketball, and hockey is easy to play and understand. There’s only 16 games a year to pay attention to and less players to concentrate on. It makes fans want to watch more than just their hometown team every Sunday. Instead it turns your average Joe sitting in an office cubicle all day, into a fan nut that you don’t want to get in the way of on Sunday. Many people put hours, days and weeks into their drafts and or teams. People have become rich from this thing we know and love as fantasy sports and the NFL loves it. Why you may ask? This only creates more viewers which in turn creates more revenue for each team and the league as a whole. Many people wonder why the players of the NFL don’t come out

and take a stance against the daily fantasy sports industry. Considering they’re the ones people are betting on essentially and in turn making money from them which they see none of. Well the fact remains the NFL plays a huge role in Fanduel and Draftkings advertising campaign and also own various stock in each of the corporations. Espn bought stock in Draftkings for an amount of upwards of 250 million dollars. Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft each individually own stock in Draftkings. So if you’re wondering why you constantly see commercial’s for these industries during the games on Sundays, there’s your answer. So where is a player to argue here? Your bosses invest in the business, and so this industry puts more money into your pocket as a player. Well, everyone seems to be making money. The players, the owners, the industry, and now us the fans. And we also get the chance to take control of our own NFL team and be the General Manager. Again, daily fantasy sports is legal according to federal law and is not considered gambling. However, it is hard to argue how putting a financial wager on something you have no control over the outcome of cannot be gambling, right?

Vulcan Football opening the season with a huge victory By Rachael McKriger, Editor in Chief

Craig McCorkle is ready for the upcoming 2016 PSAC football season. And he’s approaching it with high hopes and dreams, all which he believes are attainable. McCorkle said that the team goal this year, as it was last year, was to win the PSAC Championship. However, McCorkle went further to say that the goal is to win a national championship with first-year head coach Gary Dunn taking over the reins. McCorkle, who was a redshirt player last season, played in the offensive line position against Cheyney in the Vulcans season opener, where the routed Cheyney to a 79-3 win. The Vulcans were close to making the playoffs last season, but missed out by a slim margin. This year, McCorkle hopes to claim a playoff spot, but doesn’t want it to be by a close margin. As for wide receiver Tom Greene, he hopes the team can obtain all the championships the team can. Greene also added that he hopes himself, and the entire team members, can stay healthy in 2016. Greene also got action against Cheyney, even scoring a touchdown on a 26-yard pass from quarterback Mike Keir. Greene noted that his relationship with Kier is a “strong and trusting one. We both rely on each other to complete the play called and you need that for success on offense.” McCorkle also praised Keir, who threw for five touchdowns against Cheyney. “Mike Keir is a very smart quarterback who can make great throws and great decision in difficult situations,” McCorkle said. “I have a lot of confidence that he will be very productive this season.” Both players credit the success of the 79-3 win, and “hopefully” more big wins, to the “new team,” as McCorkle calls it, that was created by Coach Dunn. “Dunn has taught me that Cal U is bigger than just football,” McCorkle said.. “There are a lot of other great attributes that this community has to offer. Coach Dunn not only coaches us on the field, he mentors us, and coaches us in life. And he stays positive regardless of the circumstances.” “What makes Coach Dunn a good coach is his

player interaction,” Greene said. “He is involved with his players and is available off the field as well for personal situations.” Both players are excited about the big win over Cheyney, but understand that they have a tough season ahead of them. Particularly, both players listed Cal U’s rival, Coal Bowl game against Indiana University of Pennsylvania as their must-attend game of the season. In last year’s Coal Bowl, IUP defeated Cal U, 20-15. However, both players want to see Cal U students and members of the community out at Adamson Stadium for every home game. The Cal U home opener is on Saturday, September 17 against Millersville University. The game will kick off at 1 p.m. For McCorkle, he wants to give the fans the win they will want to see. “I would just like to thank all of our supporters,” McCorkle said. “And I encourage everyone to come out to our game. This will help us on our journey to becoming PSAC champions.”

Gary Dunn’s success starting early as the Vulcans win 79-3 By Daniel Beeck, Sports Editor

California University of Pennsylvania traveled to Cheyney, Pennsylvania this past weekend to take on the Cheyney Wolves for the first game of their season. Coming off a 21-20 win over Lincoln (PA) for their first win in 43 games, Cheyney had the momentum coming into the contest on Saturday. This was also the first time new Head Coach Gary Dunn ran out on the field representing the Vulcans football team. Michael Kier was named the starter and made his presence known early as he hit Garry Brown with a 72-yard pass in the middle on the field to put the Vulcans on the board with 11:32 left in the first quarter. Just three minutes later, Brown was on the receiving end of yet another pass from his quarterback as the Vulcans extended their lead to 14. After their passing game started early, Jalen Bell pushed a pile of defenders into the end zone with him as the first quarter ended with a score of 21-0. Cheyney had a great drive going to open the second quarter, but unfortunately only came out with a field goal. Senior RB Ryan McCauley dove into the end zone for the Vulcans yet again as they answered the Wolves score right back, extending their lead to 25. The Vulcans then scored back-to-back touchdowns after Tom Greene and Jordan Dandridge both scored to

end the half, with California in the lead, 42-3. The third quarter was an impressive display of both offense and defense for the Vulcans, resulting in two defensive touchdowns and one safety to extend the California lead even more. The game ended with a final score of 79-3 as the Vulcans captured their first win of the season. Michael Kier tallied 5 touchdowns and 211 yards, and Nick Grissom had 109 yards

on 6 attempts. California will take on Seton Hill this upcoming week as they look to continue their offensive success.

Women’s Soccer plays to tie with Seton Hill, 0-0

By Matt Hagy, Sports Information Grad. Assistant

The Vulcans battled Seton Hill to a 0-0 doubleovertime tie on Wednesday evening at the Phillipsburg Soccer Complex in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play. With the tie, the California University of Pennsylvania women’s soccer team moves to 1-1-1 overall with the same record in conference action. Meanwhile, the Griffins stand at 1-1-1 this season, also all in league play. Seton Hill entered play having scored a combined five goals in its opening two contests of the year. The first half ended with only the Griffins having registered shots, as they totaled

six attempts with two on target. In the second half, Seton Hill posted 12 shots with six on net despite just one corner kick. The Vulcans tallied two shots on net in the second half with one on net and two corner kicks. Cal U had its best scoring opportunity of the contest in the 92nd minute with senior Selena Fushimi-Karns (Dublin, Ohio/ Worthington Kilbourne) having a one-on-one attempt before the Seton Hill goalie made the crucial save to preserve the tie. Senior goalkeeper Meghan Jayes (New Albany, Ohio/New Albany) recorded nine saves in the

contest for her 18th career shutout. Seton Hill goalkeeper Jesica Neill posted a pair of saves in 110 minutes of action. Seton Hill held a sizeable 22-3 shot advantage, including nine on net, and also posted a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, at West Chester with the game at 3:30 p.m. The match will be played in West Chester.

Following a four-win weekend, senior Danielle Hayes (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and sophomore Lois van Schaik (Naarden, Netherlands/St. Vituscollege) were recently selected to the Vulcan Invitational All-Tournament Team. Hayes led the team and finished third among all players at the invitational with 4.19 kills per set while posting a .238 hitting percentage over the weekend. She led all players at the event with 11 service aces and also ranked among the leaders at the invitational with 2.94 digs per set. Maestre ties for ninth at Indianapolis By Matthew Kifer, Sports Information

Senior Carla Maestre (Puerto Ordaz, Venezuela/ Colegio Ibero Americano) fired a three-over 147 (72-75) to tie for ninth overall on the individual leader board on Tuesday at the Indianapolis Invitational, which featured seven teams that competed in the NCAA National Championships last season. The Vulcans finished in 14th place with a 77over 653 (324-329) while at the Prairie View Country Club. Dallas Baptist captured the invitational title by two strokes with a nineover 585 (300-285) after featuring three top10 golfers. The host Greyhounds, who were the runner-up at the 2016 NCAA National Championships, finished in second place with an 11-over 587 (290-297) and Tarleton State

ranked third overall with a 19-over 595 (300295). Maestre was one of three golfers to shoot a three-over 147 at the two-day event that featured over 90 golfers. She tied for fifth among all players in the field with a combined eight birdies after firing an even-par 72 in the opening round. Maestre has now registered a top-10 finish in 10 events over the last two years. Senior Rachel Lim (Singapore/Singapore Sports) posted an 18-over 162 (82-80) and tied for 59th overall at the event, while junior Cai Yan Ho (Selangor, Malaysia/Smk Bukit Rahman Putra) tied for 70th place after carding a 23over 167 (81-86). Senior Mercedes Epondulan

(Pittsburgh, Pa./Taylor Allderdice) tallied a 33over 177 (89-88) while in the Hoosier State and tied for 82nd overall. Junior Stephanie Perkins (Knysna, South Africa/Oakhill) finished the event with a 55over 199 (95-104). The Vulcans are scheduled to return to links at the Bing-Beall Fall Classic hosted by Findlay on Oct. 9-10.

Men’s Soccer starting out their season in the win co l umn By Daniel Beeck, Sports Editor

The California University of Pennsylvania Men’s Soccer team is starting out hot, tallying seven goals in three games, and also posting a 3-0-1 record thus far. With younger players scoring four of the teams total in the goal department, the Vulcans are showing the depth they possess and the skill they have, even off the bench. Freshman Cooper Amos and sophomore Eric Campbell are lighting up the opposing goalies and between the two of them, they have a combined 9 points. With a 9-7-1 record this past season, getting quality wins over West Virginia Wesleyan and Seton Hill will help them later in the season when they face off against conference leaders Millersville and Mercyhurst from last season. California lost only five seniors last season, which means that this Vulcans team is young, and has one year of experience under their belt. With an impressive display of scoreplaying abilities of the forwards for this team, Head Coach Emedin Sabic has a gifted group of individuals this season. Sophomore Ahmad Awadalla leads the team in assists with two and Eric Campbell leads the team in points, shots on goal, and goals, with two.

Eric Campbell attempts a shot on goal against Shippensburg. The Vulcans look to capitalize on the nonconference matchups in their future, taking on Cedarville (OH) on September 21st and Davis & Elkins on the 27th. The PSAC play will continue with Bloomsburg and East Stroudsburg in the coming weeks.

California now sits in the fifth spot in the PSAC behind league leaders West Chester, the team they will face on September 17th. Photo: Sports Information
