CAREERS UPDATE October 2017

Careers Appointments At Caludon we are very lucky to have the skills and expertise of Carole Foster, a careers adviser who is based at school with us 2 days per week. For the past few weeks Carole has been meeting with students, so far from years 10 through to 13, for half an hour to listen to their interests and successes and offer careers advice and guidance. This will continue throughout the year and will widen in scope to include Year 9 later in the year when students come to make their options choices.

Achieve Programme

“The careers appointments were very helpful. It was useful to be able to just talk through things with someone”

After the half term holiday, the Achieve programme that is studied in tutor time for two lessons a week will be focusing on careers for all year groups. This programme covers relevant content for the different year groups including: which subjects lead into and link with which industries; transferable skills that link between industries; how to write an effective CV; where to go for careers advice and guidance.

De Montfort University Leicester (DMU) is a university ranked Gold in the 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), the only Government-endorsed measure of teaching quality in higher education. Our Gold award places DMU in the top third of UK universities. The TEF panel judged that De Montfort University ‘delivers consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students. It is of the highest quality found in the UK’. DMU has invested £136 million into developing its vision of the ‘campus of the future’ and now that vision has become a reality. This is part of the university’s commitment to attract the brightest and best students, scholars and staff in the future, both nationally and internationally. The university consists of four faculties: Business and Law; Arts, Design and Humanities; Technology; and Health and Life Sciences. It is home to more than 20,000 students who study more than 400 courses, more than 160 of which are professionally accredited. Our students are supported by 2,700 staff, including some of the finest academics in British universities (we have the third highest number of National Teaching Fellows of any UK HEI). The focus for learning and teaching at DMU is the delivery of a highquality learning experience for all our students. As a result, 96.7% of DMU graduates from summer 2016 are in work or further study after graduating, according to the Destinations of Leavers from Higher Education (DHLE) 2015-16 report [above the sector average of 94.3%]. We work closely with globally renowned commercial partners such as Hewlett Packard and Deloitte. We also enjoy rewarding links regionally and nationally – including our partnership agreements with Leicester City and Leicester Tigers. These links enable our students to learn skills and to apply their knowledge in new environments, helping them to forge contacts and develop their future careers. The best way to find out more about life at DMU is to visit us on an Open Day. Find out more at dmu.ac.uk/opendays

The Skills Show 2017 In November a selection of students in Year 12 will be attending the Skills Show at the NEC Birmingham. Twitter Feed Caludon is fortunate to have an established link with many local training providers. These providers cover a range of apprenticeships, colleges, and universities and they attend the two yearly careers fairs, as well as delivering assemblies to a range of year groups throughout the academic year. In order to strengthen that communication link the Caludon Careers twitter feed now keeps you updated by sharing messages from these providers, as well as our own information. You can find this feed at http://www.twitter.co.uk/caludoncareers.

Careers Fair On 6th November Caludon Castle is hosting a careers fair. This will take place from 5pm to 7pm and include a range of training providers covering apprenticeships, colleges and universities. It is open to students from all year groups. The providers will be able to share information and show the kinds of areas that their establishment covers. This is a great opportunity to find out more information and to be inspired by the opportunities that different training providers and different future pathways can offer.
