Reehling client’s special days, and how adding additional lens rentals to her gear has improved her photography business. What equipment do you normally rent for a job? L: “I shoot manual on a Canon 5D Mark III and tend to rent the Canon 70-200mm f/2.8 and 85mm f/1.2 lenses. The 70-200mm is great for capturing candid moments and the
compression at 200mm is amazing for portraits. This lens captures the subjects in such a lovely natural way, and I’m able to give them some space while shooting. The 85mm is great for low-light shooting and creates that dreamy background painting effect that is so attractive in portraits and wedding photographs. I also like using the 85mm to focus on people’s expressions and it’s a nice

change from the 70-200mm for long days of shooting because it’s a bit lighter!” - How did adding a rental piece enhance your own equipment and improve your photo shoot? L: “Both the 85mm and the 70-200mm are great lenses, and I wouldn’t have been able to build my portfolio without the help of Calumet in renting them all these years. When I’m not using the rentals, I’m shooting on my versatile and hard working 24-70mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.4 which also produce great results for different reasons. Though now that I’ve seen the improved results in my photos from renting better lenses, I’m happy to now own the 70-200mm 2.8, and plan on getting the 85mm next year.” - How has renting equipment changed the way you plan your shoots and your photography business? L: “Since I am still building my equipment list, I feel like I have more flexibility to shoot whatever I need to shoot on my list. I also really like interacting with the staff at the Calumet store in Philadelphia. It’s nice to be able to go in and talk to them about my shoot, and get their feedback and recommendations.” - What advice or gear recommendations would you give to photographers? L: “I like to shoot late afternoon or early evening to take advantage of the soft natural outdoor light. I shoot RAW and all of my images are processed in Lightroom. I edit each individual photo separately and would not recommend

batch processing. I think a lot about what individual photos my client will like the best, and that’s what I present to them. The newest version of Lightroom 5 has made editing wedding photos much easier and almost eliminates my need for Photoshop. When shooting a wedding, I often carry two camera bodies, each with a different lens so I have the range and versatility to be prepared for anything. Above all, I think the most important piece of advice I would give to other photographers is to make sure that you are making a genuine connection with your clients. Listen to them, and stay tuned in to all the delicate details that make up who they are. This builds trust and allows them to feel comfortable around you and as a result you’ll be able to capture those natural, beautiful expressions and moments that they love!”

Lora Reehling graduated with a BA in Interdisciplinary Fine Arts from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She has been a photographer for over 10 years and in 2010 her business took off when she started shooting weddings. Lora’s first experience as a photographer started in Ocean City, Maryland in 2003 when she began photographing families and children on the beach. Through this connection with people, she learned that her best qualities came out and she felt the most fulfilled. She wanted to share this passion and joy with others, and a couple years later decided to take an opportunity teaching photography to teenagers in Peru for a fair trade organization called Fairmail. Turning Everyday People into Superheroes An Interview with Jonathan Thorpe

onathan Thorpe is a commercial photographer and cinematographer in Washington D.C. His unique blend of lighting and humor help his images stand out above the rest. Being self-taught and only shooting now for four years, Jonathan has carved out a niche for himself in the photography community, and plans to keep looking forward.

- When did you make the transition from still to video and how would you define some of the major differences in creating still vs. video productions?
me a lot. Mainly it’s shown me that slowing down is a good thing. As photographers, we often teach ourselves to find one moment to define the story we’re telling. When it comes to video, you just have to show everything that leads up to that one definitive moment.”
- What got you interested in photography in the first place? (What age were you and what was it that intrigued you?)
J: “I wouldn’t say I’ve made a full transition into video from photo. It’s about 70/30 with photography being 70% of the work I do. I really didn’t think I would enjoy working in video, but it really has taught
- Could you describe your personal “style” in your still work. It looks like it combines some fairly traditional portrait approaches, almost like Norman Rockwell but with a fresh, clean, contemporary look?
J: “It was actually all so random, I went to a hip-hop show years ago and, with my point-and-shoot camera, took some shots of the artist performing. The next day I emailed him the photos, and a month or so later I found out they were published in a large hip-hop publication and had my name everywhere. From that moment on I was hooked. Did you pursue a formal photographic education or are you self-taught? J: “I’m 100% self-taught. I remember staying up all night reading as much as I could and practicing every technique I could find, eventually

J: “Wow, to be compared to Norman Rockwell is amazing. I figured out early on that I didn’t want my pictures to look like every other portrait I had seen. In fact I recall telling a girl I was dating at the time that I started that I couldn’t see myself ever photographing people. Ha, how wrong was I? I tend to use a lot of lighting on everything I shoot. I’m not a natural light guy at all. Even my photos that look naturally lit, I promise have some sort of lighting added to them. I wanted my photos to have a hyper-realistic look to them, almost “cartoonish,” but still retaining human elements. I try to have some elements of humor to my pictures as well. when trying to relay a message to the viewer.” - It appears that you tend to intentionally select “normal” everyday looking people, instead of “perfect” models. Is there a reason for that and how is working with untrained models different than professionals? J: “I like to shoot everyday people and make them look like superheroes. I use my friends for a lot of my shoots because it makes the shoots relaxed and fun. When it comes to shooting professional models, I will use them here and there, but often times for the story I’m trying to tell, the “perfect” model just doesn’t convey it well.”

- Do your clients tend to select you for your style and if so, how do you work with art directors to make it coincide with their needs? J: “Usually I am booked for my style. I’ve turned down bigger shoots, simply for the fact that they were hiring a guy with a camera as opposed to wanting to hire me, and because I’m pretty upfront with a “what you see is what you get” attitude. Art directors and I never really have any issues. If you’re hiring me, you know what to expect.” - Your blog is an interesting mix of backstories to certain images you’ve created, product reviews, and thoughts on branding yourself. How effective has this been in bringing in new clients? J: “Blogs are so important. It’s a way of giving insight into who you are to potential clients. Let’s face it, a lot of times the best photographer for the job

These digital media have been especially formulated to meet the high standards and preferences of the most discriminating fine-art printer. They are available in two different substrates, SilverGloss and Satin Matte, and each comes in a choice of two base tones, White and Natural. SilverGloss are the acid-free, alpha-cellulose papers that emulate the classic, air-dried, glossy fiber-based traditional silver-halide papers used by the master black-and-white printers. Satin Matte is a 100% cotton rag substrate media that features a rich, satin-matte surface that, unlike some matte surface papers, is not dead or flat. The White base papers are slightly optically brightened — yet archival proper — to produce an elegantly subtle punch that really enhances some images. The non-brightened neutral Natural base doesn’t exhibit any of the usual dull yellow look that is found on many of the other non-brightened papers on the market today. All four types are a heavy, 300 gsm with a thickness between 18 and 19 mils, depending upon type.
