Keep your sensors clean at Calumet When dust or other airborne particles land on your camera’s sensor, it wreaks havoc on all of your images. That’s why it’s important to have your sensor checked and cleaned on a regular basis.

Looking to upgrade your kit? Why not part exchange your old equipment towards the latest models? You can now get a quick and competitive valuation on your kit via email. Simply visit our second hand web page, complete the short valuation form and email it to us. We will base our values on the information provided and will send you our best offer. If you are happy with the offer then simply send your equipment to us using insured delivery. Upon seeing the equipment, if the condition differs from that stated on the form, we will re-asses and contact you with the new valuation, and if you’re not happy with the new value then we will arrange to send the goods back to you at our expense. It couldn't be easier to part exchange your old kit.

To get the best performance from your equipment, we recommend that professional photographers have their camera sensors cleaned once a month and amateurs once every three months. We offer a sensor cleaning service at our retail stores across the country. It will be cleaned by a fully trained member of staff and can offer a 24 hour service so that you don’t have to be without your camera for long. Sensor cleaning can be carried out on most models of DSLR’s – please check with your local store that your model is suitable. Please ensure that your camera is full charged when you bring your camera in for sensor cleaning. With prices starting at only £36 for a partial sensor, ensure that your photographs are free of any imperfections. Speak to a member of staff in store for more information.

Danny Green Multiple award-winning wildlife photographer When he was a child Danny Green had a choice to make: football or fishing. “I couldn’t play football,” he confesses. “So instead I went fishing with my grandfather, who taught me all about the British countryside. I learned about the animals that live in the UK, their behaviour and their habitat.”

locations around the British Isles, producing a considerable body of work. “They are fascinating creatures: they can be so sociable and loving with each other, then the next minute they turn into maniacs and start fighting. It’s so funny.”

It was the start of a journey that has led Danny all around the UK, into Europe and as far north as the arctic circle, photographing everything from puffins to polar bears. “I’ve been shooting wildlife images for about 22 years and a lot of that time has been spent on native British species,” he says. “We have such a mosaic of habitats in this country – some beautiful places that we can really brag about. Our coasts, estuaries, mountain ranges and rolling moorland are classic locations for wildlife.”

Five years ago Danny set up Nature’s Images, a tour company that enabled him to travel further a field into northern Europe. “I’ve been to places like Norway, Sweden, Finland and Iceland and I’m intrigued with the species that live there. Polar bears, great grey owl, brown bears – they’ve all fascinated me since I was a kid.

Although Danny describes himself as a generalist, he has made a speciality out of his favourite subject of sea birds. “Photographing puffins and gannets is challenging and rewarding work, and being on a remote colony, like St Kilda or Flannans Island by myself, with just my supplies and food and water, is a very special experience. Some of these islands haven’t been visited by too many people, yet alone photographers. It’s exciting to be somewhere like that shooting for the first time.” Danny has spent four years documenting puffins in various

“When I started this project I only had enough budget to enable me to get to the Cairngorms for a couple of weeks, looking for mountain hares, but as time’s gone on I’ve travelled further a field so I can go after more and more animals.”

Crested Tit the last hour of sunset. It’s not a unique way of working, as a lot of landscapers operate in this way also, but I think it comes across in the way pictures look. I tend to shoot with long telephoto lenses too – a Canon EF 300mm f/2.8L IS II USM and EF 500mm f/4L IS II USM – using them fairly wide to give me a clean soft background that draws attention to the animal or bird I’m photographing.” Danny is currently enjoying the EOS-1D X as his primary DSLR camera. “The new autofocus is impressive straight away and has really taken things to the next level. Previously I’d been using the EOS-1D Mark IV, which is also very good and still has a place in my bag, but the EOS-1D X allows me to do genuinely new things. It’s very responsive.

The culmination of Danny’s European work is his new book The Long Journey North, which showcases his extraordinary images from over eight years shooting in region. “It’s taken me a long time to feel happy with the project; it sometimes feels like it will never be finished as there is always something else to go after. “I’ve become addicted to good light, especially the kind you see in northern Europe in the first hour of sunrise and Brown Bear cubs “Performance at high ISO sensitivities is a bonus too. Photographing birds in flight requires very fast shutter speeds to freeze the motion in their wings, and I can do that now with high ISO values that don’t give me problems with noise. “I guess the only downside about the camera is that now I have even more frames to choose from after a shoot that I did before! I’d rather be out shooting than sitting in front of my computer screen editing.” Secrets of success Danny says there are three key ingredients in every successful wildlife photograph: “The first is, subject matter, the second is composition, but the third ingredient has to be something extra to put the animal in context or show something about it that is beautiful. It could be the quality of light, the subject’s behaviour or even the weather conditions. Despite his adventures in the arctic circle, Danny says a good wildlife picture doesn’t always need a rare species. “You can photograph a kingfisher in poor light and in an

average location and this image will be a poor one. But a shot of a house sparrow exhibiting interesting behaviour in superb light will be a great photograph. It’s always better to concentrate on surroundings, behaviour and light.

“A barn owl, for instance, will have a favourite area where it hunts. If you see one in field at 4pm, chances are it’ll be there again the next afternoon. When you return, think about staying hidden and looking towards the right place for a shot. It won’t happen the first time you go back, but eventually it will. One of the key skills of any wildlife photographer is patience.”

“In Finland there are only 140 wolves left in the wild. I was witnessing nearly 10 per cent of the country’s total population. I couldn’t take any pictures as it was too dark, but I felt so privileged just to be an observer of something like that.”

“People who are new to wildlife photography often ask where is the best place to get started, and I always recommend somewhere like a garden or a patch of local woodland or waste ground. Keep going back to that area over a period of time and you’ll gather more knowledge on the birds and animals that live there and their habits and behaviour. Then because the location is close to you, when you get some nice light you can return there quickly and know what to look for first time.” Danny enjoys passing on advice like this in the courses he runs, which are attended by photographers of all experiences. But camera skills are not all that he teaches. Beyond knowing about gear and technique, Danny advocates learning “fieldcraft abilities” – those skills which can be used to anticipate an animal’s behaviour. “Advanced fieldcraft skills may include knowing how to find a badger set or fox den, but equally important is knowing when a certain bird is active. When is the best time to capture its behaviour in the best quality of light?

The privilege When talking with Danny Green it’s hard not to be impressed with his passion and dedication for his subject. “I do have the best job in the world,” he jokes. “I sometimes feel very privileged to see the things I see. “Earlier in the year, on the Finnish-Russian boarder, I was photographing some of the apex predators of the forest, like bears. I’d seen nothing all evening and then a single male bear came out of the forest and started to feed on the bait we’d put down. After about 30min he suddenly became very alert, then turned and ran for his life. I was expecting a human to walk out of the trees, but there was nothing for 5-10 minutes. Eventually I could make out the outline of a wolf. And then another, and then another. In total nine wolves came out of the forest; the pack was on the move.

With The Long Journey North complete, Danny is planning to stay closer to home in 2013. “I’d like to produce a book on wild Britain, looking at some of the species that aren’t photographed so often. Badgers, stoats and roe deer, things like that. “And I’m looking forward to continuing as a Canon Explorer. I was so pleased to be recognised in this way in 2012. It’s a real honor, not just for me but for wildlife photography in general. So much wildlife is in serious danger, both in the UK and further afield. Obviously wildlife photography can pay a huge role in bringing that to everyone’s attention, which makes Canon’s support of crucial importance.”

NIKON ADVERTORIAL Following on from his previous article on the Nikon D800, renowned professional photographer and Nikon ambassador John Clements delves a little deeper into his experience with Nikonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ground-breaking DSLR.

In the last issue I mentioned it was important to familiarise myself with my D800, then incorporate it into a workflow slightly modified to match its characteristics. Those initial 'test and calibration' efforts on AF, lens performance, metering, exposure and colour reproduction, allowed me to get out of the blocks for real, very quickly. It certainly proved a time saver. Most jobs have been accomplished with little or no need to think about much, except the subject, client, and lighting. Just the things we should be spending time on. In essence focusing on the photography not the technology. That process has continued with a varied workload. From offices to stables, to airfields and into studios, the D800 has actually now become pretty much a camera of choice for most jobs. That surprised me a little, I thought I would equally be reaching for other bodies still. I am seriously considering re jigging my system to introduce a second D800, or more likely a D800E, as the two seem to dovetail well for what I do. So what have been the pleasant surprises? First, I would have to say the long exposure quality. I have, as resolution has increased on DSLR's, gone back to using tripod mounted cameras a lot more. Having met quite a few D800 users who have asked my opinion about their image quality, to be honest, some don't seem to have realised the need for more stability, and /or faster shutter speeds being needed in many situations compared to lower res cameras. At best you might just loose some 'edge' to the sharpness if not.

Likewise, lens quality must be high and used at f stops no smaller than the diffraction limiting performance.

Even at around 30 second exposure times, I have been impressed with what I can obtain from a D800 file.

I am very conscious of maximising the cameras dynamic range when the situation demands, through metering, exposure, lighting and ISO.

Likewise, I have a conservative taste when it comes to ISO. I think that comes from learning my craft shooting film when slower was better. But even at 800 ISO (remember the conservative bit), I have been pleasantly surprised. I have to remind myself the camera has 36mp. That says a lot.

So far this camera has allowed me to make a pretty smooth transition of my workflow. And although I have used countless cameras over the decades, I must confess I am enjoying using it as a consequence.

The raw files do have a wonderful inherent technical quality when all the above comes together. In fairness, those under the bonnet things such as the cameras Expeed 3 image processing system appear to give a better performance than previous generations. Not just in dealing with the large files, but in creating the latent data for post capture especially in highlight/shadow regions. And a most pleasing thing is that we can shoot or create really good jpeg files alongside NEF's, pretty much ready to roll for clients there and then.

Helped by what I know is a high image quality potential just waiting to get out, in turn the D800 makes the effort you put in make you feel even better. But a word of caution, the D800 can also be quite unforgiving - so lighting, make up, and post capture skills for example - all have a role to play depending on what you are shooting. But the results can still be so detailed that when you view them, it is as if you can feel them. But the final thing which does put the D800 above most others is the brilliant flexibility I get from the various format options: FX, DX, 5/4 and 1.2x crop. With so many pixels to start with, you still end up with plenty of resolution, but with lots of composition flexibility to match subject and situation. Nice.

In our last issue of Focus, we asked you to submit up to three of your best images in our sports photography competition sponsored by Canon. Canon kindly donated three fantastic prizes with the first prize being an EOS 600D Double Zoom Lens Kit worth £789, followed by a Powershot G12 for our 2nd place and a Selphy 810 Compact Printer for third place. We had a fantastic response, and there were so many worthy images to choose from. After whittling it down to an incredible shortlist, John Sibley chose the worthy winning images. The overall winner was taken by Tom Flathers and entitled “Hockey Action.” The images were taken using a Canon 7D and 70-200mm 2.8 L IS USM lens. John commented “All three images display perfect timing, freezing remarkable moments in sport. However, the eventual winning image of the hockey player leaping several feet off the ground to avoid a shot is in addition almost technically perfect - in crisp focus with no movement. What also really makes the image stand out is that the photographer has positioned themselves to take best advantage of the beautiful light and has selected a uncluttered, dark background which helps the action in the foreground stand out.” 2nd and 3rd place went respectively to Laurence Harvey and George Franks. When a Lyttle goes a very long way So you think CGI stands for Computer-Generated Imagery huh? Well don’t bet the farm on it any longer. Look it up on Wikipedia some time from now and they might just have changed it to Carl-Generated Imagery. Carl Lyttle is a London-based, but world-acclaimed, car photographer and CGI expert. Offline he also revels in shooting landscapes - ‘All car photographers are basically frustrated landscape photographers’, he claims. Alongside Douglas Fisher, another leading commercial photographer, he is the co-founder of Moofe - now widely recognised as the best 3D asset library in the world and used extensively by top brands across auto, pharma, utilities and manufacturing industries. When he’s not prosecuting alchemic genius in tandem with a hand-picked gang of geeks and wizards at his Dufours Place, Soho, base (collectively and magically manipulating render passes with alluring esoteric identities; ‘reflection’, ‘specular’, ‘occlusion’,‘alpha’) he’s yomping the globe executing premium car shoots for his long-standing automotive clients like Nissan, Lexus, Mercedes, Land Rover, GM and Subaru. And just to get a handle on scale here, Carl gets commissioned for shoots that can take months at a time – and include his travelling photo-team. His ‘brilliant’ agent scopes the deals but Carl must make sure the arithmetic adds up or the car shoot can rapidly metamorphose into a fiscal car crash.

“You look at a shoot like that one for GM” he says, “and you think ‘OMG that’s huge’. But when you factor in salaries and expenses for twelve people plus the shoot costs and all the other associated project overheads, you have to really get it right or you could easily lose money overall. It’s important to build in a contingency of at least 5% to cover unexpected costs.” An average four shot campaign can be anything between £50,000-£75,000 but it could equally be £150,000 or more. “I remember a two shot task we worked on for Chrysler in New York – just one week before 9/11” Carl recalls: “Of course this was before we were digital. We were positioned on Wall Street, right in front of the Stock Exchange. They closed the road for us on that Sunday and that alone cost over $80,000. We had one hundred extras; rain machines up and down the street; cop cars and actors. Of course we had post-shoot retouching capability, but not as we know it in 2012. In those days the photographer had to get it at least 80% right in the camera. A shoot like that will never happen again. You just don’t need a hundred people. Today we’d assemble ten extras and tell them to change outfits ten times while we simply photograph them in different positions. You don’t need a rain machine because we can generate all that in 3D. You don’t need to close the street and we don’t even need the car in situ. That two shot campaign had a $250,000 budget.

But in those days it wasn’t unusual for me to have a £50,000 film bill on a shoot. Think about it. A typical thirty day project using a hundred sheets of film a day – it soon adds up.” Obviously shoot fees will always depend on location/travel/people/CGI costs etc – and clients who commission photographers like Carl for month-long shoots will be expecting a discount on their published daily rates too. “It’s very unusual indeed for me to be commissioned to complete just one shot for an ad campaign – like we did in the old days” he confesses. “Nowadays, I tend to get briefed on massive, multi-asset projects. For example, I will be handed the data for a new car (stripped down to its very shell) and we will be briefed to produce a series of perhaps ten pictures – but that’s not the end of it. These days this business is far more complex. We will also have to produce assets for every part of the world – so that might mean a different alloy for Brazil; a different alloy for China and perhaps a different light aspect for twenty separate countries. Now we must be configurators. But we must maintain highest quality at all costs. When the job goes back to the agency that commissioned it they get a Photoshop file that comprises perhaps three hundreds layers. Each ten layers are for a specific country – so they need to know to turn the light off for that

country and that colour on for another country. It’s incredibly complex and it’s happening more and more in the car world.”

I knew nothing about CGI at all. But I knew the industry was about to change again and I knew that I had to keep up with it or fade away.”

Says Carl: “These days clients want twice as much done in half the time and for 75% of the money.”

“The tipping point for me digitally was in 2001-2002. I recall telling agencies I was planning to invest in digital technology – but they remained extremely sceptical. They thought digital cameras were just a fad. Then, a few years later CGI arrived on the scene and I got the ‘heads-up’ that Nissan, one of my biggest clients, was going to start moving in that direction. The trouble was that at the point

He adds: “The economic crash in 2008 meant that CGI was about to emerge as an innovative and achievable workflow option for clients who were being forced to slash budgets. Agencies started to commission photographers who knew their way around the CGI process.”

Carl got his big break back in 1995 when top agency art director David Cloke gave him his first chance to shine.

surge but he notes: “I looked at it in the same way as I always have when buying a camera. It might have all the bells and whistles but it’s still only a tool – and as a photographer, the old cliché about ‘only being as good as your last picture’, holds true. My team and I often talk about CGI as ‘our world of pain’ – it can be hugely rewarding but equally frustrating at the same time.” CGI: up close and personal with the X-Trail ‘robot’ shoot The brief: Nissan wanted to demonstrate that their X-Trail stuck to the road better than any other 4x4 in its class at that time – so we had to show robots guiding it round corners and making sure it stuck to the road. The robots were telling the story. The execution: Carl explains: “We went to Iceland to shoot the background that I had previously despatched a scout to recce for us. At that point there was no real car in the frame at all. We used physical targets which comprise either one metre triangles or one metre cubes. They allow us to position correctly – to get a real-world scale to the

image we are going to construct. So then we work on placing the car (in CGI) where we placed the one metre object. This means that when we get to the 3D part of the process the team can scale, match and get the lens perspective 100% accurate.

‘We talk about CGI as ‘our world of pain’ – it can be hugely rewarding but equally frustrating at the same time’ He states: “The irritating thing about CG is it’s too perfect. If you don’t add some imperfections the end result never looks quite right. So we needed to add mud to the X-Trail and perhaps a tiny dent or fluctuation on the paintwork. We made sure the splash sprayed over the wheel exactly as it would in reality. The secret of a great 3D to 2D retoucher is the way he/she can just bring all these elements together.”

CGI experts boast exceptional skill sets in their craft but Carl admits there is still a ‘but’. “CG artists can be truly brilliant but they do need to be hand-held from time to time. They haven’t been brought up in the traditional photo-world so they don’t have that natural ability to understand light and shade – or at least the true subtleties of it. Retouching a CG image isn’t like retouching a conventional digital picture in the true sense because when we pass a file from the CG side of the fence to the 2D retouching side it is delivered in what we call render passes – and there might be fifteen passes for the same image. It is down to the skill of the team to translate that welter of information into a compelling 2D image at the end of the process. The timescale on delivery from start to finish of the X-Trail project was probably eight weeks.” 2012 has been the busiest year ever for the Lyttle

PHOTOGRAPHER SPOTLIGHT ‘photo-factory’ but he points out a worrying trend. “Not one of my commissions (other than a shoot for Fender) has come out of the UK. The work has all come from the USA, France, Japan, China and Spain. And this is a real concern. Not just for me. But for everybody. Even the big campaigns that do originate within UK agencies are going to American or perhaps German shooters. It’s disconcerting that this work is not staying within the country stable.” He continues: “I met with my agent last week and we were discussing this sorry state of affairs. I think it is quite amazing that the whole of England’s creative process appears to have made a collective decision to use photographers from outside the country on big commercial advertising jobs.”

Carl’s kit: “On the camera side I shoot with my brilliant Hasselblad H4D 60 with all the usual range of lenses. I shoot most of my car work on a 35mm or the 50-110mm. But I also pack the 28mm and the 80mm, plus converters. I am a walking Hasselblad showroom but probably only use 20% of the equipment. I had to shoot a close-up of a car badge last week so it was good to get the 120mm lens out for a change. For CG 360 degree HDR domes that enable real world rendering, I use my Canon EOS 5D MkII with a 15mm Sigma lens. I am a Broncolor man when it comes to lighting. If we are shooting a big scene at night I will bring in at least 60Kw of light; I commission a generator and HMIs. I use Calumet regularly for various pieces of kit that I need and I rent flash equipment from them from time to time too. I’ve bought video heads and video tripods from Calumet’s flagship store in Drummond Street, Euston – it’s just so easy to wander round and pick up what you need. If I am doing a video shoot and I need a second or third body I always make a beeline for Calumet.” When he’s not shooting cars or landscapes you might find Mr Lyttle talking portraits of rock stars like Johnny Marr (The Smiths). He smiles; “By an amazing coincidence I recently did a shoot for Fender Europe, the famous guitar company. It involved a truly memorable three day studio session with Johnny – a hero of mine from back in the day.”
