03 Introducing the New Project Planning and Management Professor and Guest Speaker for Summer Quarter 2016.

PROFESSOR MATINEE MASOOMIAN

BY: THILINI CHETHANA SAMARASINGHE

After completing her Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering from University of California, Irvine, Matinee began working as a Field Engineer at Kiewit Infrastructure West, where she learned she had an interest in project management. She later decided to pursue a Master’s degree in Engineering Management from California State Polytechnic University, Pomona. Matinee is currently working as a Project Manager at the Southern California Gas Company. She has a vast knowledge of Project Engineering from an educational and workplace standpoint.

“Project managers are the most creative pros in the world; they have to figure out everything that could go wrong, before it does.”

Project Planning states how to complete a project within a certain timeframe, usually with defined stages and with designated resources. It is the roadmap that shows how the project scope will be accomplished within budget and on schedule. It is important to plan the work and then work the plan. Planning determines what needs to be accomplished, how it will be completed, who will do it, how long it will take, how much it will cost, and what the risks are.

SPRING 2016

“It takes courage to grow up and become who you really are” Today is a day which we will remember for the rest of our lives. This is not the end of our path, but just the beginning. Graduation is a meaningful word; a ceremony at which degrees are conferred. But this word means more than a ceremony for us as graduates. It means change in our lives to reach a higher stage of life, the time to become a new person and time to follow your dreams. We might have never thought graduation would mean that much for us. Everyone goes through changes and the majority of people have had the opportunity and privilege to experience the changes that come with graduation. We would have to say that, this is the one thing that has had a great impact on our lives. It is not just receiving a certificate and going to another level of education; California University of Management and Sciences changed us in a better way, molded us to conquer the world. It nurtured us in a more practical and realistic way with its slogan ‘Values Versatility Technology’. CALUMS exemplified that it is not the size of the university that matters, but the faculty and what they do. There are little things about friendship that get looked over, but when we actually stop and see a glimpse of them, those are some of the greatest moments that we can cherish. Having a group of good friends from different parts of the world might be the best thing that happened to us after coming to CALUMS. All what matters is the equality and harmony among students; not where you come from nor what your skin color is. Today, everything seemed so different, so changed. The black gown with different colored stripes were half way buttoned up as if saying they weren’t ready for this yet, but the big smiles on our faces looked as if we could take on the world. All of us had smiles on our faces while forcing back tears that started to line up on the rim of our eyelids. We clenched each other in a big hug one by one. It is evidence of the pride and support we have taken from CALUMS for the past two years. We’ve worked hard for this moment. We deserve this beautiful day.

WINNING COMMENTARIES SPRING 2016 A scholar refers to education as an essential human virtue, a necessity of society, basis of good life and sign of freedom. Education is important for integration of separate entities. This meaning can be related to value, versatility and technology, the three founding philosophy of California University of Management and Sciences. -- DAVID-BANJO OLALEKAN At CalUMS, the students are given guidance and support to discover their capabilities through skill acquisition and application of relevant knowledge to better their own self and play an impact on their respective communities. It is in this regard that the University has empowered several students in becoming vibrant leaders in the community. -- JUBRIL HASAN I believe in breaking my own negative aspects, for two reasons knowing what is better in me and if I don’t make any impression in it, I quickly shift to what I can make it perfect and excel in it. -- VINESH MANGALAMPALLI Being a student in CalUMS enables one (including myself) to step out of their comfort zones, which fosters growth of an individual. -- MARY SEBUNYA The values that I gained from the university will be followed all my life and if every student could impart the values and follow those in their life, then it would definitely have a good impact on the future of the country. -- MADAN NUNE

SUMMER 2016 Our lives could be much happier if we could acknowledge our values and make the right decisions that honor them. CALUMS’ generosity in giving the scholarship awards, providing financial aid and on-campus jobs for the students are the best examples of the founding philosophy ‘values’. -- SINDHU NANDURI The on- campus jobs, scholarship awards and financial aid provided to the students are the best examples of values that I have experienced in CALUMS. -- VAMSHI PANDITI One great aspect which geared in the university is that the idea of respecting a person's principles or standards of behavior and one's judgment of what is important in life, which is beautifully illustrated by professor Baglin in her class ‘Leadership and Organizational Behavior’ and all these practices of ‘Values’ is a reality in CalUMS. -- THILINI SAMARASINGHE The world’s stage today it is no longer sufficient to be master at just one skill or domain in the professional domain. University’s principles resonates this wisdom and inculcate into the curriculum of studies. -- SHWETASHREE SAVAGAVE Although the individualistic culture taught me how to focus more on myself, my main value of bettering the life of other people by getting education and working on health care reforms still remained. -- GULSUM TADJITDINOVA

How Women Started their Journey in Sports “Start unknown. Finish unforgettable.” One of the main themes of sports in ancient Greece was the separation of genders. Pierre de Coubertin, in his book “Olympism” explains Olympic Dimensions, the Principles of Equality, and the Women at the Olympic Games. The genders were divided and the society emphasized as different traits in males and females. The author states "Fame will be great...for the woman whose reputation for excellence or blame is least known among males." Instead of encouraging females to participate and attend

athletic

events,

women

were

extremely

discouraged to participate in sports, and laws were in effect to stop women from attending the Olympics. In ancient times, no women were not allowed to participate in the sporting events of the Olympics. To ensure that a male was competing, athletes would be nude when they participated in the games. But before each Olympic Games, there was a separate women's athletic event; the Heraean Games. These games were dedicated to the goddess Hera and held at the same stadium at Olympia. Myth is that the Heraea was founded by Hippodameia, the wife of the king who founded the Olympics. Thanks to this, women had the opportunity to participate in Sports. But when women started practicing in sports, they were subject to different rules and procedures than that of men. The most noticeable difference was the required clothing. Men were required to do athletic activities in the nude. Women were required to wear chitons (a long woolen tunic) during such activities. This difference of clothing seems to stem from societal appreciations of male beauty over female beauty of the time. Women first made their appearance at the Olympic Games in Paris in 1900.

However, from the 1950’s to the 1980’s, women’s sport expanded at an astonishing rate. In 1964 women participated in six sports in the summer Olympic Games and then in 1984 it increased to sixteen sports. In 1984, four national organizations offered intercollegiate tournaments for women and over 800 colleges and universities provided women with athletic scholarships. In 1914, the International Olympic Committee Congress decided the women’s medal to be the same weight as the men’s medal. This allowed the decision about women's participation to the individual international sports federations. Concern over the physical strength and stamina of women led to the discouragement of female participation in more physically intensive sports, and in some cases led to less physically demanding female versions of male sports. The battle for equality between men's and women's sports continue into the 2000s. Many of the issues today often revolve around the amount of money going into men and women's sports. The 2012 London Olympics were the first games of their kind in which women competed in every sport. Today, women’s sports play a viable and visible role in Olympic, collegiate, professional, and recreational level. As individuals we all have certain skills, talents and knowledge no matter the gender. This is unique to us as individuals. It’s pretty simple. We believe everyone should have an equal chance to participate in sports regardless of gender.
