year has passed since I decided to take a leap of faith to join a promising startup “Fetchr “. Fetchr innovated a technology solution which purpose is to solve the problem of the addressing system faced by many companies and countries to deliver a seamless headache free delivery.
Ahmad Alkhawaja PMP, MBA, Class of 2016
I was chosen by the management of Fetchr to spear head the entire project management department in the one and only Kingdom of Saudi Arabia which is considered the most interesting and go to market in the region. Implementing what I have learned from my MBA in California University of Management and Sciences was the magic sauce for the recipe of success that the company was looking for. It is quite interesting to implement the theoretical knowledge I gained in a practical predominant sector which is logistics. The startup world does not demand an intensive experience if not any experience in a certain field as long as you have the passion and dedication to turn the table around to your side. I have literally hit the ground running with maximum power, and I was within the first three months the first Project Manager to be rewarded the employee of the month.

On a daily basis I am exposed to new learnings. Working closely with the top executives of the company accelerated my growth on a personal and business level. I really go by the quote of Sheryl Sandberg (COO of facebook), when she was asked about why she joined Facebook with a lower title than her previous one, and her answer was “If you’re offered a seat on a rocket ship, don’t ask what seat! Just get on.” In my opinion, California University of Management and Sciences has engraved my theoretical knowledge while Fetchr gave me the opportunity to accelerate my career and fully own what I do with 100% support to make sure I excel and exploit all opportunities to the max.

Guest Speaker
Edward Thadeus Duterte Abad
President and CEO of Supreme Touch Care and Services Inc.
It is always interesting to find out about someone’s route to success, but it is even more exciting to learn how graduates from your own school build their way to the American dream. Edward Abad, class of 2012, shared his story with current CALUMS students this December. A nice, positive personality of our Fall Quarter Guest Speaker made his presentation even more involving, helping all people in attendance, be engaged in the story. Edward began his path in the U.S. as a visitor, who arrived to the land of adventure to find out if it was the right place for him. As it turned out, it was one of the milestones in Edward’s life in America was joining CALUMS and getting an MBA degree. Those years he spent working towards his masters’ degree gave him incredible opportunities to integrate not only to American education but to American society. Edward understood what the main principles of business in U.S. were, basic laws of the economy, and he also met goal oriented, open-minded and honest people who became his friends, colleagues and mentors. Social skills are very important, emphasizes Edward. Once people realize that you are a smart, reliable and hardworking individual they start helping you. They become your support team and welcome your initiative.
Once Edward graduated from CALUMS, he was able to find an interesting job and an employer who sponsored him for his working visa. Having been an experienced professional with a business degree from an American University, Edward was able to successfully build his career Family is the main asset you can get in your life, says up and become a respectful employee. Edward finishing his story. He advises all CALUMS students and graduates to take care of their families because they are a strong support and the real source of energy that pushes us forward in our life journey. CALUMS L ibr ar y A Focus on the Assistants L
ibrarians have been adapting to transformation in their environment since the advent of the technology generation. Millennial students are found with smart phones and Galaxy tabs to streamline their information, Books are being digitized and students want to be able to find their research and resources quickly, such as Google user-friendly formats. Avinash Mukundan, a library assistant who has grasped the role of the position reliably and consistently with respect to work product and deliverables for multiple quarters, has been working with the library catalog and resources since the library transitioned to the new system in 2015. Social media has transformed relations and created a new form of communication that allows news to cross bridges, territories and countries. Another library assistant, Vamshi Panditi, knows how to use social media to connect with his classmates and refer his friends. California University of Management and Sciences, teaches its students to be on the forefront of technological advances, follow the social media ads for upcoming events, develop their communication skills and to prepare themselves for a culture that also requires an understanding of values and versatility. Libba Bray once mentioned that “the library card is a passport to wonders and miracles, glimpses into other lives, religions, experiences, the hopes and dreams and strivings of ALL human beings, and it is this passport that opens our eyes and hearts to the world beyond our front doors; that is one of our best hopes against tyranny, xenophobia, hopelessness, despair, anarchy, and ignorance.” This concept is emphasized in the CALUMS library, as the school represents a melting pot for diversity and educational enrichment for all circumstances.
Students’ backgrounds and experiences are taken into consideration when announcing holidays and special events. Students’ goals and dreams for educational enrichment are addressed on campus; their passports to the United States are their bridge to educational opportunity. When the Student Body Elections took place in the fall alongside the Presidential Elections, the students enjoyed posting their ads and developing a campaign to represent their students in the library. During Fall Quarter, Neelima Gupta, a librarian assistant ran for an officer position to connect and represent the students. Student services makes sure to recognize special holidays, and observe traditions like Ramadan and other yearly events. The students value their experiences in the country and on campus. CALUMS is full of international students with drive and purpose to achieve in the United States, and make their families proud. The students at CalUMS are extremely diverse. They bring their home culture to the campus, as well as their educational experiences. For example, student assistant Lina Ammari prepared a traditional Jordanian meal and shared it with all the students, faculty and staff on November 4th to bring the campus together. The sister school, South Baylo University prepared a delicious Thanksgiving meal in the Episcopal tradition, held on November 17th, and shared it with the entire CALUMS campus staff.
“Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life.” ~ Sidney Sheldon
Librarian assistant Sowjanya Gaddam shared a little of her background saying that her family is in Bangalore, India and that she values CALUMS’ “discipline, students and staff ”. She thinks the school is serving her educational needs well, and helping her to achieve another masters. She is also the first in her family to earn a master’s degree. During the summer of 2016, the library underwent a renovation and added nine new computer work spaces to the group study room. As a result of the renovation, the library has experienced a slightly increased number of usage statistics and students who use the library for their many research requirements. Overall, usage statistics for the library have increased on average from June 2016 (since renovation) – November 2016 by about 5-15 students each month. The library also found that facing out some of the titles on the shelves, similar to public libraries, has helped increase circulation stats and introduce titles that students did not readily realize were in the collection. In an effort to keep the library shelves well organized, Anusha Panguluri, another fall quarter librarian assistant, completed a shelf reading of the sections to make sure her fellow students could find titles on the shelves based on the Library of Congress classification system. With her previous background as a library assistant, she knew how to analyze the shelves and keep them in order. When asked about her experience with CALUMS, she replied “the school has completely changed me; I have more knowledge than I did before I came here.” She is from Hyderbad, India and moved here with her husband and fellow library assistant, Mahesh Panguluri, to earn her Master’s degree. This is both of their last quarters on campus and they are very grateful for the lessons they have learned
through CALUMS. “Friends have been a huge support on campus, and they helped me with the initial struggle of passing the English proficiency exam.” She hopes to continue work as a software technician in the field. Her work as a library assistant has helped keep the general decor of the library welcoming to fellow students getting used to the renovation changes. Other library assistants, like Vinesh Mangalampalli, have been jack-of-all-trades, providing time to help tutor, serve as a teaching assistant for the academic department and Academic Dean, a security guard to maintain safety of the school, an umpire for the spring 2016 table tennis tournament and a volunteer to help other library assistants. “It is great to help students” said Vinesh, when asked how he is able to divide up his time between being a great student and great student worker. Library assistants like Vinesh have been able to demonstrate the founding philosophical values of the campus, especially versatility with their ability to adapt to changing environments as the library and school have required adjustments. His friends, including past library assistants Krishna Mallisetty and Madan Nune, have greatly contributed to the culture of the campus and its objectives. CALUMS library continues to strive to meet the resource requests and technology advanced needs of students through print and digital titles, as well as reference and research assistance. Come to the library if you need to use the printer and for a quiet workspace for your homework!

WINNING COMMENTARIES I was a kind of a person who leaned towards talking in person rather than talking in groups. After joining CALUMS to pursue my Masters in Computer and Information Systems, I have been seeing myself project more self confidence in group discussions, which is very important to survive in the current technological world. Versatility is nothing but adapting to different situations. In CALUMS, the Master’s program encourages students in different ways like offering jobs at the University for eligible candidates, which helps students to be versatile in learning to manage both job and classes. I have gained excellent interpersonal skills through the program in CALUMS. I see myself as totally different person in terms of communication skills and versatility. The scholarship awards and the financial aid that is provided best fits for the efficacy of my goals. THANMAYE KAJA In CALUMS professors assign group projects to the students, through which students get the opportunity to work together, and teach one another. According to Albert Einstein (n.d.), “Try not to become a man of success but rather try to become a man of value.” The university wants the students to grow up to be individuals, to have their own thoughts, to analyze things on their own and to be able to form their own beliefs independently and not simply believe what others tell them. The professors of the university are preparing the students to face the real world. Their lectures are not restricted to the book. They go beyond the information present in the book, and they relate the information to the real world and give examples to make sure we understand it better. VIJAYA SRI KAKARLA PROJECT TITLES BNB Global Should Improve Its Marketing Strategy to Increase the Market Share. NANYOUNG JEOUNG Mungi Group Should Implement an ER (Employee Relation) Management Team to Improve Employee Relations and Productivity. DILIP KUMAR DARURU
