Two weeks into my studies on campus, I went down from the third floor to the library to get one of my new friends because one of our classes was about to start. Upon getting there, as she turned and saw me, she smiled as she always did and asked me a question that still messes with my head. “Why have you come here?” To any other normal person, this question will go right by. Of course you know the answer already, I came to get her for class and I didn’t yet have her number. But luckily for me, I am not such a normal person and the question sticks to me. “Why have I come here?” I was thinking about it quite a bit. I didn’t come here to get a certificate. My mom didn’t make me do that either. I am not here just to make new friends (though, I must say that I have met some of the most amazing people this past quarter here on campus). I came here for an education. I came to learn! I have been told that I have some of the biggest dreams yet and you know very well that the greatest of achievements usually follow the most arduous of preparations. I believe I have such a great future ahead of me that I just have to prepare for it. I have to learn how to work with people, how to care for them as I ought how to motivate them and get the highest levels of productivity from working with teams and this is what I have come for. I came to become even better!!! I am not just writing this because I want my name to appear in the CalUMS Pipeline (though that is so awesome). I am writing this because in my very first quarter as a student in CalUMS, I have learned something that I think is very crucial and I would like to share that with you. You have a dream, a passion, a drive or maybe just a wish list and every day, you go working really hard to make these dreams come true. Doesn’t it mean that the people you pass by, day in day out are all just trying to do the same? And the way you would like someone to stand with you and encourage you is the same way that they would want that too? And if you would love another set of hands as dedicated as yours working with you to accomplish your visions, then they would want that too? All this means one thing: If they can by any means hope to be better, if there is better for them to become, then you can and should too. 06

"Looking for a challenge was probably the main reason why I chose to pursue my PhD in Information Technolgy and Political Science even though if you were to ask me about my future when I was a teenager I would not have even imagined myself in academia,” begins Christian. Having immigrated to the US more than 20 years ago Christian started his new life in a new country which had a lot of surprises. Coming such a long way and have achieved so much, Christian completely understands the needs of international students and appreciates opportunity to work in such a diverse environment that CALUMS has to offer. He likes small classes where he can see progress of every student and actually talk to everyone.

Christian Ogwo, PhD

I was always looking for a challenge

Dr. Ogwo’s teaching philosophy is not to make students remember the material, but understand it. He prefers his students to express their thoughts rather than quote books; write essays rather than answer unified questions. Even though it might sound like a bit of a challenge, it does help with understanding the material better.

“CALUMS is a unique school”, says Sabine Freij, professor who has been with University for more than a year and a half already. “Small classes, smart students and plenty of time to work with almost every one of them individually.” Sabine shares how proud she is seeing her students overcoming their fears, achieving impressive results in education and especially choosing her as a professor over and over again. Being a foreign born individual who came to the US at the age of 16 without speaking a word in English, Sabine, who has recently gotten her PhD in Political Science and Research Methods, knows exactly what international students are going through. She is trying to encourage every single student in CALUMS to speak up, not to be afraid of anything and just follow their dream, because all of us came here with purpose. She creates a relaxing but strenuous atmosphere in her classes and establishes more mentor like relationships with her students.

document. The digital era and competitive job market set new rules. Every resume must be optimized for a digital machine which is looking for particular key words in every document it scans before it goes to an actual HR personal. There is a helpful book in the CALUMS Library to ease this hard process of key words selection. Resume Buzz Words, by Erik Herman and Sarah Rocha is well-structured and sectioned based on occupation guide. Alena Martynenko, Student Services Advisor and CALUMS Career Center representative shared examples of resumes, most common mistakes and dos and don’ts. “It is important to start with your goal. Choose what position you would like to apply to, find examples of job postings and read description. By the time you have read 5-10 descriptions of the same type of position, you will be able to name most populat key words. At this point you are ready to correct your personal resume”, says Alena. “Make sure your resume has as many key words employers request for as possible and start your search!”

Big Data As A Developing Sector In Economics Nobody can be surprised nowadays with the fact that technology is around us and we are depending on it more and more . Just imagine living without WiFi or cell phone for a week. It is also obvious that the more technology is arround us, the more data is being produced. This is why our century is the time for bright and intelligent IT people to shine. However, to understand how the system works, and, what is more important for economics, how to benefit it, is not an ordinary task. On February 8th an experienced Data Architect, DBA, Developer and Consultant Mr. James Barnett spend an hour sharing his stories and understanding of the subject. “Big Data, what it is and why it is important was the topic of his lecture. A lot of MSCIS students of CALUMS came to listen to him that night. James started with a simple to understand definition of what Big Data is and the factors driving it. He covered topics about tools and technology to work with it, how it can increase business value and what are the practical cases of implementing it. It does sound pretty easy to understand.

James Barnett Data Architect, DBA, Consultant Big Data is all about unstructured clusters of different information that a system has to be able to analyze and make accessible to anybody who needs it from a customer. That customer gets an instant reply to his request, to an executive manager, who can now monitor business processes almost on the go. Growing fast, this relatively new segment of human knowledge is a new industry, requiring an increasing number of professionals which is a great opportunity for CALUMS graduates. James encouraged all students to start looking for jobs in the Big Data sector right away and not to be afraid to start with a small entry-level position. Companies are growing exponentially and it might be a good path to grow a great career with them.

Student Body Association For CALUMS Students The Student Body Association was organized in CALUMS at the end of the Fall Quarter 2016 when a lot of students participated in voting to choose their representatives to make students’ voice heard by administration of the school. This is a big idea which requires a lot of work and dedication. Officers of the Student Body Association organized an Open Forum Discussion that took place in the Student Hall on January 13th, 2017. During the discussion many students expressed their hope for more events that would include students and brighten students’ day-to-day life. Some students said it would be practical to update CALUMS information on the SBA Facebook page, and to make it the main platform for student to communicate with each other to solve all kinds of questions, starting from housing, or purchasing a car to an advice on where to spend a day, or what places to visit in California. The Student Body Association as well as CALUMS representatives are currently working on implementing these ideas to make students’ lives easier.

Valentine's Day In Style It is all about love towards your family, friends, colleagues, your significant other and many more who supported and loved you in your life. This celebratory event is a good reason to get together and appreciate all people who you love. CALUMS celebrated Valentine’s Day in style. The hallway was decorated with hearts and flowers, quotes of famous authors were all around the Library, themed photo booth was set up for student’s enjoyment. We even had a board with names of all the faculty members where students could vote for the professor they liked the most. The absolute winner was Mantinee Massomian, who teaches the Project Planning and Management class. The most exciting part of the event was a live concert that CALUMS student Simba Bere performed. For almost an hour straight Simba was playing piano and singing different songs about love and appreciation. Tea, coffee and light snacks were complementing the event finishing the atmosphere of love and care. 10

CALUMS Cricket Tournament A sports game that lasts several hours but is loved by millions of people? Cricket! It is popular in Great Britain, India, Sri Lanka and many other countries. Students of CALUMS initiated and organized the first cricket tournament in the history of the university. Four teams were competing for the main trophy and were playing hard to win. It was a match of friendship where CALUMS students were playing together with students from other schools nearby, mixing into several teams and playing not only to win, but to spend a quality time together. Office of Student Services wants to say a special thank you to all students who helped with making this match happen: Yashwanth Akula, Kiran Bhargav Vangari, Venkata Rakesh Yama, Damilare Raji-Tola and all officers of the Student Body Association. It was a great game and we are looking forward to others!
