California University of Management and Sciences Halloween Is A Spooky Tradition Halloween, which is celebrated on the night of October 31, is one of the most awaited American holidays, not only among children but also by a large number of adults all over the world. Its roots go deep back into centuries as the Celts (now the U.K., Ireland and northern France) first held it as a festival of Samhain 2,000 years ago. It marked the end of harvest and beginning of wintertime, as the Celts celebrated New Year on the 1st of November. Later, this festival was mixed with All Saints Day and later was known as All Hallows’ Evening, which is the full name of the holiday. Halloween has a long history of its coming-to-be and has passed through many changes over the years. Contemporary Halloween is less spiritual and more fun with

all its various costumes, pumpkin-carving shows, and “trick-or-treat” children’s pastimes. CALUMS did its best to be a part of this old tradition and capture the spirit of the holiday inside the university’s walls. The day of Halloween, everyone entering the school had to pass through a large cobweb with spiders that covered the whole door. Also, students had to say “hello” to skulls swinging upon their heads. The college was completely immersed in Halloween atmosphere with scary sounds reaching unsuspecting ears from nowhere. Every guest was welcomed with special holiday-style candies. All students and professors could make-up their Halloween look by choosing any of the provided Halloween accessories, such as scary masks, fake teeth, witches’ caps, funny glasses, and devils’ horns. After the sun went down, everyone could admire the Halloween Jacko'-lantern — a hand-carved pumpkin by the SSA team, complete with a candle inside. CALUMS thanks everyone for being a part of the celebration! It was a great pleasure to observe students leaving school with the deepest feelings of this fabulous holiday.

California University of Management and Sciences Thanksgiving Feast at CALUMS Thanksgiving is celebrated in many countries and by many religions. Here in the United States, this tradition started in the 1600’s and continues today. It is celebrated on the last Thursday of every November and is an opportunity to give thanks for the blessings of health and happiness. This year, Professor Wilson’s marketing class planned a grand Thanksgiving Feast at CALUMS on November 26. President David Park welcomed stu-

dents to the festivities and thanked those who planned the event. He also mentioned that school activities foster togetherness and bonding among students. Dinner included delicious turkey with all the side dishes. After eating, students participated in a fun quiz and raffle. A great time was had by all!

Interview with Dr.Yoon Dr. Jong S. Yoon B.S. Biology, Genetics: Yensei University, Seoul, Korea, 1961 M.A. Genetics, Cell Biology: University of Texas at Austin, 1964 Ph.D. Genetics, Oncogenetics: University of Texas at Austin, 1965

The advisor to the President of CALUMS - Professor Emeritus Dr. Jong Sik Yoon, who joined our school team three quarters ago, shared his experience, thoughts and view of the university’s future. Dr. Yoon was born in South Korea, and he started his American education in 1962 at the University of Texas in Austin where he got his M.A. and Ph.D. degrees. Professor Yoon’s major research interests are oncogenetics and cytogenetics. During the years of his academic and research experience, Dr. Yoon visited over 80 countries, where he managed and presided over conferences, presented papers

and taught. Among the endless list of the places he has been in are United Kingdom, France, Italy, Germany, Greece, Turkey, Russia, Thailand, India, Japan, China, Hungary, Poland, Jordan, Czech-Slovakia, Sweden, Mexico, Peru, and many others. “Every place has a different character, different culture and I like every one of them” says Dr. Yoon. At CALUMS the Professor teaches Anatomy/Physiology, and Genetics and preparing to teach Biomechanics. Dr. Yoon also works on a strategic plan for the university’s development and kindly agreed to answer some questions about it.

Could you tell us about your new vision for CALUMS? - The three most important university missions that we should establish, are teaching, research and services. We have to fulfill our collective assignments for society, the nation and the world. First, we must help to solve global problems, expand knowledge, and improve lives throughout society. Second, we must offer the highest-quality undergraduate and graduate education to prepare the leaders of the next generation. We have to keep up with new technology and the opportunities for learning it, because new technologies are developing very rapidly. And we must develop new revenue streams to become even more financially self-sufficient.

What are your new suggestions and opinion on the research? - It is very crucial to get up to speed through face-to-face meetings with students, faculty, staff, alumni, and friends of the university and community leaders. We have to listen to somebody else’s ideas, because that is a very important thing. Therefore we need to bring everyone together around the table and ask all to weigh in on the possible solutions. California University of Management and Sciences From my point of view, Dr. J. Park, chair of the board of trustees and key groups of the university community, have laid a strong foundation with the university strategic plan, and implementation of that plan must continue. Is the number of CALUMS students proceeding to grow? - Yes, the number of students is increasing right now, and it is a good sign. You have an incredible career. What advise can you give to the students who want to have the same

success in their field? - You have to dig, dig and dig. If you find out that there is no water, then you have to go to another place and dig there, and even if there is also no water, you have to continue. Never give up and don’t stop following the path you choose, even though sometimes it really seems to be very hard. So, if once you got in, just keep going. Could you tell us a little bit more about your scientific field? - My field is genetic studies and the evolution of life. I have studied the relationship between volcanos and evolution – how they change the chromosomes. I did many researches on chromosomal mutations after the atomic explosions. We did researches on how to protect from the radiation, how to improve the afterradiation and how to reduce the amount of the radiation. It has been known that radiations, some chemicals, and some viruses that induce the mutation. And also I did some biochemical work. We studied if different chemical products are harmful for humans or not. And if we decided that it does, the US government removes those products out from all the shelves. We had to check every product, especially those that are relative to biological effect, which is effect to the humans.

In the conclusions and recommendation - With the development of recombinant DNA and gene cloning technologies, molecular biologists are now able to isolate and dissect essentially any gene and/or any segment of any chromosomes. Therefore biologists can now carry out carefully designed genetic engineering of living organisms, including microorganisms, plants, and animals. Genetic technologies will have a broad impact on the future. They will contribute to filling some of the most fundamental needs of mankind, from health care to supplies of food and energy. Therefore, one can hope that humankind will use the powerful tools of genetic engineering in ways that will improve the quality of life on the earth for all living organisms including humans.

Thank you for sharing your interesting background with us Dr. Yoon.

California University of Management and Sciences Three Meows—A Story With A Happy Ending Professor Rebecca, CALUMS veterinary professor, shared with us her experience about rescuing three kittens found on our campus in the parking lot. "I heard a distinct meow while returning from the class and, to my surprise, I found two kittens hiding under a parked car and a third behind the trees across the fence. They looked scared and starved, and I wasn't sure if they were left by someone or if they were wild cats. But with the help of students and security staff, I got the three kittens in a box and decided to take them home with me. My own cat, which was in my car, was friendly enough to share his carrier with the kittens as they were getting scared in the box while driving. When I got them home, I discovered there

were two males and one female covered with flees. After giving them a bath, I fed them and covered them with sheets to make them comfortable. When they started settling in, I took them to get their vaccinations. Each day, I brought the kittens to school, where they got attention from students, faculty, and staff. This paved the way to finding them good homes thanks to Professors Sasha and Marinpong. The third kitten, my favorite, went to my daughter’s house. I’m glad my husband extended his patience for two months when I added three kittens to our household on top of the six cats and four dogs we already have." These few lines are a short reflection of Professor Rebecca's kind and generous ways and her satisfaction with her profession. It is nice to have such people around us.

California University of Management and Sciences A Special Guest at CALUMS Iyad Afalqa, an experienced health care executive, provided important information regarding the Affordable Care Act, also known as ObamaCare, to CALUMS students. Everyone was interested to know how this new system works and how to register. Iyad Afalqa presented helpful information about the act in a clear and understandable manner. His background and qualifications are quite impressive. He is a Palestinian -American born in Jerusalem. As an activist for healthcare access and affordability, Mr. Afalqa co -founded Medical Network Devoted to Service (MiNDS) to provide charitable specialty healthcare to the uninsured. Mr. Afalqa has a Health Care Executive MBA from the University of California, Irvine ’s Paul Merage School of Business. He also holds a B.S. in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, where he also earned a Certificate in Jewish Studies. At the December 5, 2013 presentation, Mr. Afalqa suggested that any student without health care insurance should consider accessing www.coveredca.com as soon as possible to investigate his or her options. In some cases, the U.S. government will subsidize the insurance premiums. Students with

F-1 Visas do not require a Social Security number to purchase insurance. Students having difficulties completing the online form can call customer service at 1 -800-300-1506. January 15, 2014 is the deadline for coverage to begin February 1, 2014. Thank you Mr. Afalqa!

California University of Management and Sciences On Your Mark…Get Set...Go! In the midst of students’ busy schedules, they tend to lose touch with casual fun. CALUMS brought holiday cheer to its students when they organized the quarter-end party. Can you imagine having fun with both go-carts and laser tag? Yes it’s true. The party started with the go-carts. Once the doors opened, everyone was running to the cars, very eager to listen to the leader: “On Your Mark…Get set...Go!” Once the racing started, every student imagined themselves as a competitor, and they were not raising their foot off the accelerator. After completing go-carting, everyone ate dinner.

After all, a party is never complete without food. SSA team members got pizzas and drinks, which made the evening even better. (Of-course, total calories from the pizzas were burned off with laser tag.) After eating, each student received tokens and moved to the arcade gallery to play games. Laser tag was a blast! Students wore protective vests and held laser guns as if they were going into the army. Two teams were formed before entering the room. Each team devised their own plans to win. After entering the room, there were flashing lights and loud music. Everyone was running here and there, hiding, screaming, and “shooting” the other team members to score big. Everyone was tired by the end of the game. After coming out of the room, all were excited to know the results: how many times each student “shot” another and how many times each

student took a “shot.” After knowing their scores, everyone was eager to know the scores of others. Both teams claimed victory and shouted with excitement. Everyone was happy for the opportunity to attend this fun event and to make new friends.

California University of Management and Sciences International College Fair For the first time, CALUMS teamed up with many other colleges for a virtual International College Fair. It was conducted November 13, 2013 and was helpful for prospective students who cannot visit the CALUMS campus in person. This fair offered an invaluable opportunity to gain a unique perspective about our school. The United States Embassy promoted this international fair in many countries. Almost 20,000 students attended the virtual college fair. Prospective students were provided the opportunity to access an online chat between 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m., where students found answers to many questions. Our university was represented by Dr. Woo Jin Han (Program Director), Lisa Lee (Director of Admissions), Charles Kim (Recruiting Services Director), Professor Janet Laurin (Director of Student Services), and Alena Martynenko (Marketing Assistant). Each of these individuals answered questions during the chat time. This was a new experience for CALUMS. Over 1,000 students visited the college website; overall the event was very successful. Plans are being made to participate in the fair each quarter, starting next February. A WARM WELCOME TO NEW STUDENTS BRAZIL
