What is an internship?
Internships are for-credit academic courses that are supervised by a faculty member. Through an academic internship, you will experience professional career interests outside the classroom but under the supervision of Cal U. For most majors, internships require 40 hours of on-site work per credit, and they generally range between three and 12 credits. Depending upon the company, some interns are paid for their time at the workplace.
Why should I intern?
There are several reasons why internships are helpful. Perhaps the most important is that they give you an edge in the job market and prepare you for the workforce. They also build resumés, while exposing you to real-world problems and issues. Internships allow you to “test-drive” a career, cultivate flexibility and creativity, and help you gain confidence!
What should I do to prepare for an internship? These are just some of the activities that will help you to land an internship … and a career! • Contact Career Services or go to www.calu.edu/careers to develop your Career Advantage Plan. There you will learn about job shadowing, co-ops, informational interviewing and more. • Talk to your faculty adviser about where students in your field intern and research possible internship sites. • Go to the Internship Center web page at http://www.calu.edu/internships and click on “students.” • Take related courses and hone your computer skills. • Keep those grades up!
__Complete the internship, including academic requirements.
