International Leaders Build Bridges

E

ducation leaders from more than a dozen universities around the world gathered at Cal U on Nov. 20 for “Building Bridges Through Education: The Role of International Education in Developing Cross-Cultural Awareness.” Cal U’s Office of International Programming, in collaboration with the Turkish Cultural Center of Pittsburgh, organized the daylong event. Administrators and deans from Cal U met with university presidents and rectors from 14 schools in Central and Southeast Asia, Africa, Europe, and North and South America. Together, they engaged in dialogue about the importance of higher education in building bridges between cultures to promote diversity, religious and social tolerance, and global understanding. Specifically, the visit was intended to open doors to study abroad opportunities, student and faculty exchanges, and greater international collaboration. Among the day’s activities was a forum open to Cal U students, faculty and staff. Along with interim University President Geraldine M. Jones, the session included remarks by Dr. Serif Ali Tekalan, rector of Fatih University in Istanbul; Professor Recai Pecen, president of North American University in Houston; and Cal U student Emily Dickey, who traveled to Turkey last summer. “As educators, we want our students to transcend borders,” said President Jones. “We encourage them to think and act as global citizens, working to achieve their full potential while recognizing the worth and potential of others. Our professors also gain from broadening their horizons. “Today, we have come together seeking academic

We know that firsthand experience is the most powerful teaching tool of all, and together we are exploring pathways to an expanded world-view.” In keeping with the event’s theme, she explained that “bridges carry traffic in both directions” — so even Cal U students who remain on campus will benefit from greater interaction with students from overseas. “In our increasingly globalized society, the day-to-day

roviding students with educational opportunities has been Dr. Caryl Sheffield’s passion for more than 40 years, ever since she received her bachelor’s degree in special education from California State College in 1973. For the leadership she has demonstrated throughout her career — she returned to her alma mater in 1991 as a professor and currently is associate provost and associate vice president for Academic Affairs — Sheffield has been selected to receive one of the New Pittsburgh Courier’s 2014 Women of Excellence awards. “As a businesswoman, mother, wife, philanthropist, daughter, entrepreneur and, moreover, an African-American woman, you are a vital part of the Dr. Caryl Sheffield community,” the award letter said. Sheffield joins interim University President Geraldine M. Jones and Dr. Lisa McBride, former director of Social Equity, as Women of Excellence winners. Sheffield will be recognized officially at a reception Dec. 11 in Pittsburgh. “It’s a wonderful feeling to be honored for my contributions at this point in my career,” said Sheffield, who plans to retire from Cal U in August. Sheffield was chair of the Department of Early, Middle and Special Education from 2002-2012, and she remains active with the Frederick Douglass Institute and the President’s Commission for the Status of Women. — Continued on page 3
