It was surely God’s night to shine through the 50+ individuals who joyfully displayed their gifts to an audience of over 300 in the chapel on February 19. The evening began with the Special Needs choir praising God with their voices and hands as they sang Matthew 22:37 “Love the Lord Your God with all Your Heart.”

June 10-12 9:30am–Noon Crazy games, hands on labs and nifty crafts are being planned for CSI 2014! Kids kindergarten through fourth grade are invited to come and learn about God’s amazing creation as we discover mind-blowing details about this year’s themes – electricity, amazing plants and birds of prey. Start thinking now what friends you will invite, and mark your calendar for June 10-12, 9:30am-12:00pm. Register to attend at MyCalvaryGR.org.

The program continued with a variety of acts such as singing, acting, reading, playing musical instruments, dancing and more. One of my favorite chapters in the Bible is I Corinthians 12 where Paul writes about the importance of unity in the body of Christ and how God has given each of us unique and beautiful ways of contributing to his church. Verse 22 says: “…those parts of the body that seem weaker are indispensable.” Indispensable, wow! This truly confirms it, we all need each other, whether we sing with our voice or hands, or dance with our feet or wheelchair – God can and will be glorified when we praise Him. What a blessing to witness unity at this year’s Talent Night.

Lent, March 5 to April 19 At Calvary, we feel it is important for us to practice the spiritual disciplines of prayer, fasting and giving as Jesus encouraged in Matthew 6. Lent provides a wonderful opportunity to do this together, as a church body. While our church understands that Lent has become legalistic in some corners of Christendom, and has been long neglected in others, our hope is that an organized approach will help us grow spiritually. We are encouraging our congregation to participate in Lent in three ways this year: praying regularly for three people in your life who need God’s peace in their life; fasting from a form of technology (to help us focus on God); and expressing gratitude for God’s grace by looking for opportunities to give. For more about Lent at Calvary, visit calvarygr.org.

Palm Sunday, April 13 “There Is Hope”

6:00pm | Sanctuary (Childcare provided through age five.) During the storms of life, we long for a sense of peace. We long to know that we are not alone in our struggles. We long for hope. Join us at 6:00pm in the Sanctuary on Palm Sunday, April 13, as we focus our eyes on the one place where hope springs eternal and unshaking: the cross. Our prayer is for this evening of worship and celebration, led by the Calvary Church Choir and Orchestra, to renew your heart and strengthen your faith no matter what storms you may be facing. There Is Hope.

Prayer Garden, April 14-18

7:00am to 9:00pm* Chapel Entrance During Holy Week, we invite you to come to our interactive prayer garden in the

4 | April 2014 | calvarygr.org

Chapel for a time of prayer and reflection. In our Refuge series this year, we have been focusing on the life and letters of the apostle Peter. In our prayer garden, we will be examining our own lives in light of what we have learned. Like Peter, we are called to follow Christ; we are called to step out in faith and risk; we are called to embrace God’s truth; we are called to love; and we are called to the cross. There will be several stations to guide you through the garden, or you may choose to simply sit and pray. You are encouraged to find some time during the week to come reflect on Peter’s story, meditate on Christ’s suffering and sacrifice, and consider His calling on your own life. *Open all night on Thursday.

Seder Meal, April 16

6:00pm Fellowship Hall A better understanding of the Seder meal (Jewish Passover) enables Christians to more appreciate the meaning of the Lord’s Supper. We will have an opportunity for 100 people to experience a Seder meal. Cost is $15/person. Families are encouraged to attend. If cost is a problem, let us know! Scholarships are available. RSVP at MyCalvaryGR.org or contact Kristin White (kwhite@calvarygr.org), at ext. 5155 with questions.

Maundy Thursday, April 17

7:00pm | Sanctuary Communion Service (No childcare.) As Jesus and the disciples ate their final meal, He washed the disciples’ feet to illustrate humility and servanthood. During the Passover meal, Jesus broke the bread, saying, “This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then He took the cup of wine and said, “This wine is the token of God’s new covenant to save you−an agreement sealed with the blood I will pour out for you.”

During our Maundy Thursday service, we will see people washing the feet of others to demonstrate Christlike humility. We will also partake in the Lord’s Supper, just like Jesus did on the night He was betrayed. The Bible narratives of Maundy Thursday can be found in Matthew 26:1730, Mark 14:12-26, Luke 22:7-38, John 13:1-17, and I Corinthians 11:23-25.

Good Friday, April 18

7:00pm | Sanctuary Service of Remembrance (No childcare.) An evening of reflection that commemorates the night when Christ bore the ultimate burden for us and was crucified in order to give us peace with God. The Bible passages for Good Friday can be found in Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23 and John 19.

Easter Sunday, April 20

7:00, 8:10, 9:40 & 11:15am A celebration of all that Christ has done for us and the peace and new life we find in Him. The observation of Lent and Holy Week are meant to help prepare our hearts to celebrate the power and joy of Christ’s resurrection on Easter. The Bible passages about Easter can be found in Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24 and John 20. FAMILY SERVICE DAY: Nursery will be provided for birth through 35 months except during the 7:00am service. No children’s Sunday School or adult classes will meet on Easter. EASTER BREAKFAST: Join your Calvary family to celebrate the resurrection with a light breakfast in the Gym, served from 7:30 to 10:15am.

Peace w e ith you b Life’s storms come in many shapes and sizes. Some of them surprise us; they come out of nowhere and change everything. Others are drearily constant for years at a time. Either way, we often feel pressed down by pain, anxious about the future, or afraid of the unknown. At Calvary Church, we have been studying the Apostle Peter this year. He’s pretty famous for doing some great things, but he struggled with fear and anxiety just like us. When he felt threatened, he lied about his relationship with Jesus, and then he ran. But later, when Jesus appeared, His first words were “Peace be with you.” Jesus wanted Peter’s heart to be at peace. After Peter accepted the grace and forgiveness that Jesus offered, and experienced the peace that comes with it, he lived a fearless life; he was changed forever. This is what God wants for your heart today. We invite you to join us at Calvary Church this Easter season. The grace and peace that God offers each one of us, through His son Jesus Christ, can change you forever. There is hope and there is peace … no matter what kind of storm you may be enduring.

are you ready for more?

Paul and Shannon Wiersma share an honest reflection on how they’re experiencing God’s love in new ways through a community group. Every Sunday morning I am in awe of the number of people who gather to sing and passionately worship our Lord and Savior. My wife, Shannon, and I love to worship and to feel part of something so much greater than ourselves. Being newlyweds, we wanted to make sure that Christ was the center of our relationship but knew we needed more than just Sunday worship. We were ready to be more involved in the church and become a deeper part of our community, but in a church as large as Calvary, where would we start? Our small group was an answer beyond our biggest prayers. Our small group is made up of incredible, fun, warm-hearted individuals. When we started meeting we dove right into discussing the sermons, what we thought of them, and how we thought they could be applied to our daily lives. Come to find out, it is a little intimidating sharing your intimate feelings and beliefs with 6+ strangers. We decided to make things a little more light-hearted and give each other the chance to ease into these new relationships. At meetings we started playing “get to know you games” and games in general and found out that many of us were rather competitive. Our friendly competitions opened us up to laughing, talking and getting to know one another’s stories. Such rich stories we have! We have a group member from Egypt, a couple from South Korea, an OB resident, a resident hall director, a church staff member, an accountant,

6 | April 2014 | calvarygr.org

an outdoorsman, nurse, Meijer analyst, and a personal banker. With such different backgrounds, it is incredible to hear how God has worked in our lives and how he continues to work in our lives. Every time we meet it is awesome to see our shared love and desire for knowing our Heavenly Father on a deeper level. We have become a group of friends that we know we can rely on to lift us up in prayer when circumstances are less than desirable, or to share with us in our praise for the blessings God has granted to each one of us throughout that week. As a small group we have shared some fantastic times. Last summer some of us made it to the See the Shawn McDonald concert in Grand Haven. Another week a member shared her baking troubles and our gourmet chef/baker came to the rescue, shared some of her favorite recipes, and taught us her secrets. We have enjoyed Robinettes, ethnic food day, breakfast at Electric Cheetah and there is even talk of doing a triathlon together! This group has truly been a blessing to Shannon and me as we have made a larger church more intimate, built relationships with those who share the same love for our Lord and Savior, and have been fed from the different perspectives each member of our community group has brought to our discussion and socialization from their own life story.

experiencing God in community Community group launch - may 4

Our goal at Calvary is to see every believer experiencing authentic Christian community. A Community Group is a great place to build caring relationships; join us! New groups will be forming on May 4 at our Community Group Launch. We would love for you to experience community here at Calvary Church. These groups gather in homes for the purpose of growing spiritually and relationally. You will be asked to commit to meet at least 8 times (most groups meet every other week). You will fellowship together, care for each other, study God’s Word, and pray for one another. To join one of the new groups, plan to attend the launch on May 4 by registering at MyCalvaryGR.org by April 28. You can also register at the Connection Point on Sunday mornings or by contacting Brenda Neher (community@ calvarygr.org) at ext. 5650. If you are unable to join us on May 4, you can still be part of a group. Just register at MyCalvaryGR.org by April 28 to be placed in a new group.

Leaders Needed

We have found that one of the marks of healthy groups is committed leadership. Will you consider leading one of our Summer Community Groups beginning in May and meeting throughout the summer? The leader must be a member of Calvary or be willing to become a member. We encourage all of our new Community Groups to study the sermon discussion questions that go along with the Sunday service, and he/she would facilitate the discussion. If you have an interest in learning more about this opportunity, please contact Brenda Neher (community@calvarygr.org).

We know that the prayers of many are the reason we have our precious twins.

Behind-The-Scenes with the Pastoral Prayer Team By Eric Lapata, Pastoral resident

Quite a bit happens on Sunday mornings at Calvary Church. Worship services are held in the sanctuary, children and student ministries meet to grow in their relationship with Jesus, and numerous adult classes gather to build friendships and to study the Bible. However, there is another group that meets on Sunday morning that many people may not know about. The Pastoral Prayer Team began in 2001 after a few people believed that God was calling them to pray for all of the various ministries at Calvary. They answered the call and began praying each week for all of the pastors and leaders. Now, after 13 years, the group has expanded and prays during each Sunday morning worship service. Each week, the Pastoral Prayer Team asks the pastors and ministry leaders for specific prayer requests. When the requests are returned, they are compiled into a list and are sent out to the entire team. The team prays individually throughout the week and collectively as a group on Sunday mornings for all of the prayer requests. Pastors and leaders have expressed their gratitude for the faithfulness of the Pastoral Prayer Team. Below are a few of the responses from various church leaders: “When I am unsure of what to say on a Sunday morning, the specific prayers of the Pastoral Prayer Team have helped me discern God’s leading. As a result, I feel strengthened, encouraged, and empowered.” Jim Samra, Senior Pastor

8 | April 2014 | calvarygr.org

“When I think of all the years that the team has been praying for my family and me each week, I am so very grateful.” Lee Content, Pastoral Staff, Calvary Community “Last fall we were in need of several teachers and a team leader on Sunday mornings. Three weeks later, God provided all the people we needed.” Brian Nix, Assistant Pastor, Children’s Ministry “I am so grateful a team of people are praying for women’s ministry and for me. I often ask them to pray for wisdom in the many decisions related to ministry and in my interactions with women. I can’t tell you how many times I have been surprised at the wisdom God gives. I believe the prayer warriors lifting me up are the key to this ministry!” Susan Sorensen, Pastoral Staff, Women’s Ministry “The Pastoral Prayer Team was praying for my daughter, Barbara, when she was pregnant and we KNOW that the prayers of many are the reason we have our precious twins.” Karen VanHolstyn, Assistant Director, Calvary Community. The Pastoral Prayer Team is looking for new people to join their team! The commitment is for one Sunday morning service, once a month. If you are interested in being a part of the team or you would like more information, please contact Eric Lapata at elapata@calvarygr.org.

What do Bible studies and classes led by volunteers mean to someone in jail or prison? Let’s hear from their own statements:

“It’s teaching us God’s way of living and loving our families, and changing our lives so we don’t end up going back to jail.” “Incarceration became a true blessing from God, because for the first time in a long time, I surrendered…I learned how to humble myself.” “God puts things in my life for a reason, so I can make the right choice. I thought jail was the darkest place, the worst place I could be. But there I detached myself from the darkness I once lived.” Is God calling you to be part of His transforming of lives of prisoners? If you are interested in helping to reach those in prison with God’s grace and peace, you are invited to come to an informational meeting at 7:00pm in Room 108 on Tuesday, April 1. If God is nudging your heart in this direction, come to the meeting, even if you are still unsure. Attendance does not automatically sign you up for anything, but will give you an opportunity to hear more and ask all the questions you have about the ministry. If you have questions in the meantime, please contact Ardo Draper at adraper@calvarygr.org.

2013-2014 Elders

A Note from the elders

If you have any questions or comments you would like to share with an elder, their individual contact information is listed below.

What We Believe Last year we introduced a one-page document to the congregation called “What We Believe” and a longer, more detailed paper called “What We Teach.” These documents were the result of about five years of prayer and study by the elders and others as our church seeks to update the doctrinal statement in our Calvary Church Constitution. Last fall, we voted as a congregation to adopt these documents for a single year, using them in the membership classes and other teaching settings, in order to allow plenty of time for congregational questions and feedback. Our intent is to use your suggestions to help us craft a final version that is strong, clear and faithful to God’s Word. A final version of the one-page “What We Believe” document will be available for review this summer and ready for a congregational vote at our Annual Meeting this fall, with the goal of permanent adoption into the Constitution of Calvary Church. This one-page document will be a central statement of faith that all members of Calvary should be able to support. The longer document, called “What We Teach,” will serve as a guide to our pastors and teachers. It will describe more specific beliefs at Calvary, including areas where Christ-followers may differ in opinion. Unlike the shorter statement, the “What We Teach” document will not be made part of the church’s official Constitution.

Please direct all questions or comments—including any specific wording suggestions—-about “What We Believe” and “What We Teach” to elders@calvarygr.org by April 30. In addition, please join us in praying that God will use the revision and implementation of our doctrinal statement as an opportunity to strengthen our faith and to bind our hearts together in unity as we affirm our core beliefs. Building Project Update As we last mentioned in February, for the past several years the elders have been seeking God’s will regarding how to address the challenges posed by the limitations of our building’s available space. Last year we committed to the Lord that we would take steps to add or improve upon at least three specific areas. We promised Him a Prayer Garden as a result of the extravagant gift offered by the congregation, and we committed to improve areas for our children and students. In addition to this, the Elders have also affirmed that we should make improvements to our Sanctuary. We continue to work with an architectural firm on concepts for these improvements. In late spring, we will bring these concepts to the congregation for review. In the meantime, we encourage you to join our Nehemiah Prayer Team, which currently consists of around 450 people from Calvary who receive a weekly update email on our progress. Former elder Ron Haas sends out this email that includes suggested ways you can pray and fast throughout this process. To join, please email Pam Tuinstra (ptuinstra@ calvarygr.org), and we will add you to a regular prayer update.

Spring

Severe Weather Awareness Week The week of April 6 has been designated as our spring severe weather awareness week. In the case of severe weather, event closings will be announced on Calvary’s website, WCSG (91.3), TV8 and TV13. If a weather watch develops during an event, the Emergency Response Team (ERT) will monitor the situation. If a weather warning occurs during an event, a public address notification will signal all to seek shelter in designated rooms on the lower level.

Fire

If the fire alarm sounds, please exit the building in a calm, orderly manner. The Emergency Response Team (ERT) will notify you when it is safe to re-enter the building.

Medical

All medical situations need to be reported to the Emergency Response Team (ERT). There are Help Phones and Emergency Call Boxes throughout the facility. The team is equipped to help those not feeling well or injured and, if needed, to assist until professional help arrives.

Security

All suspicious acts need to be reported to the Emergency Response Team (ERT). There are Help Phones and Emergency Call Boxes throughout the facility.

Here at Calvary we have a volunteer Emergency Response Team of professionals who assist the staff with medical, security, fire and other emergency situations. Those on the active team volunteer about one time per month during church services or major church functions. Even though we are all one team, we do have two distinct areas of service: medical and security. These individuals carry a radio and facility keys while working with the staff to provide a safe, distraction-free environment. There are also those who have professional skills in one of the emergency fields that have not become active but may step in during an emergency situation. If you have training in the emergency medical, fire or law enforcement professions, we would like to be able to communicate updates to you. Please send your name and training / occupation to Ken Meines (kmeines@calvarygr.org), Director of Facilities.

Projects should be reported using the form available from the Children’s Ministry or online at JamesGang.calvarygr.org. Completing serving projects is as simple as helping children interpret things they do for other people (shovel snow, share a lunch, donate books, etc.) as “putting faith into action!” as the book of James describes. Memorization is on the honor system. Parents, if you say your child has memorized to your satisfaction, ‘nuff said! Questions? Contact Joel Shank (jshank@calvarygr.org) at ext. 5067.

On The Bookshelf

April 22nd is Earth Day! Here are some great resources to learn a bit more about what it means to be a Christian caring for God’s creation. Serve God, Save the Planet: A Christian Call to Action J. Matthew Sleeth

Not long ago, J. Matthew Sleeth was living the American dream as chief of medical staff at a large hospital--until he saw an increasing number of his patients suffering from cancer, asthma, and other chronic diseases. He began to suspect that the Earth and its inhabitants were in deep trouble. Turning to Jesus for guidance, Sleeth discovered how the scriptural lessons of personal responsibility, simplicity, and stewardship could be applied to modern life. The Sleeths have since sold their big home and given away more than half of what they once owned. With the storytelling ease of James Herriot and the logical clarity of C. S. Lewis, Sleeth lays out the rationale for environmentally responsible life changes and a howto guide for making those changes.

For the Beauty of the Earth: A Christian Vision for Creation Care Steven Bouma-Prediger (Ph. D., University of Chicago)

If you’re looking for something a bit more on the intellectual side, this book provides a thorough evangelical treatment on a theology of creation care. Arguing that authentic Christian faith requires ecological obedience, BoumaPrediger urges Christians to acknowledge their responsibility and privilege as stewards of the earth.

Should Christians be Environmentalists? Dan Story

This book is a bold call for Christians to attain a better understanding of the biblical perspective of environmental stewardship. In a time when both Christians and non-Christians are increasingly aware of environmental and ecological problems, Dan Story urges believers to become more informed and engaged in confronting these issues. Writing as both an environmentalist and a Christian, Story shows readers how to prepare an apologetic response to anti-Christian environmentalists and explore evangelistic opportunities in Christian environmentalism.

For the Little ones These resources, Discover God’s Creation and Really Wolly Kids! God’s Green Earth, are also available in the Calvary Library for little ones.

The Library is located across from Fellowship Hall on the lower level. Our hours are Sunday, 9:15 - 11:15 am and Wednesday, 6:00 - 7:30 pm. Please note that there is no Wednesday Night programming on April 9 and 16 (due to Spring Break, then Holy Week) and the Library will not be open on those dates. 22 | April 2014 | calvarygr.org

There’s so much going on at Calvary, we can’t fit it all on this calendar! We’ve only listed a few events for each day so be sure to refer to the web calendar at calvarygr.org or the back of the Sunday bulletin for all our recurring weekly activities.

April 2014 | calvarygr.org | 23

We are so glad you have joined us today. We know there are many churches you could have chosen to attend and we are glad you chose to be here. Perhaps this week you have experienced what a stormy place this world can be. At times our lives feel unpredictable and out of control. The Apostle Peter knew all about that. He knew what it was like to fail and to feel defeat and he knew what it was like to suffer. But he also knew what it was like to walk on water. This year at Calvary Church, we are studying Peter’s letters to the church. In them we see that Peter is telling us that hard times come and that life isn’t always easy, but that God is a refuge for each one of us. While you are here we hope you will experience the grace and peace that can come from Jesus Christ — the same Jesus who helped Peter defy nature on the Sea of Galilee. Jim Samra Senior Pastor

LIFE {TOGETHER} Community is a place where you belong; a place where you develop relationships with other Christians and do life together. When you experience true community, you have close friends who meet together, pray together, grow together in God’s Word, and care for one another. In community you will be loved; you will be valued; you will be transformed more into Christ’s image. If you realize it is time to engage with people in a new way and want to be a part of a community group, visit the Connection Point on Sunday mornings or contact Brenda Neher (community@ calvarygr.org).
