Fall Registration Children turning one by September 1, 2011, through children entering fourth grade need to be re-registered for the 2011-2012 Sunday school year. Re-registration helps keep our database current, places your child with a teacher for the fall, and ensures that your child will have a nametag on September 11 – Kickoff Sunday. Pre-printed registration forms are available at the check-in desks. Please verify the information on your family’s form, and place it in the basket. Young Adults Scholarship Fund Every year the young adult ministry provides opportunities including retreats, conferences, book clubs, and times of service to cultivate and encourage spiritual growth. Sadly, financial difficulties and hardships can make it difficult for some of our young adults to be able to take full advantage of these opportunities. Would you please consider donating to the college and young adult scholarship fund and invest in the next generation of leaders at Calvary Church. Membership Class We believe membership in the local church is important. Membership means commitment to learn, to be in community and to contribute - giving back to God what He so richly gives to us. Our upcoming membership classes are a one-day class--Saturday, August 13 from 9:00am-2:30pm; and a fiveweek class-- Sunday, September 18—October 16. This class meets for five consecutive Sundays during the third service at 11:15am. Pre-registration is needed. Register online or contact Brenda (bneher@calvarygr.org) at ext. 5650. Worship Service Times We will continue to meet at 9:00 &10:45am for our summer worship service times until September 4. College Scholarships available to Single Parents The Roger W. Smith Memorial Trust Fund was established by a gift to Calvary Church to help single parents and their kids further their education. This trust fund has provided for education, summer camp fees and other special projects. To apply for fall semester scholarships, applications need to be turned in no later than August 12th. To apply for an education scholarship, contact Lynnell (lbok@calvarygr.org) ext. 3510. Stephen Ministry & Lay Counseling For those of you who are experiencing a crisis, or perhaps are going through a difficult emotional, spiritual, or relationship situation, Stephen Ministry & Lay Counseling can help. Contact Phyllis Dykstra at 784-1858. Serving Ministry If you are a child of God, He has gifted you to serve in the body of Christ. Find out how you can get connected to use your abilities and passions, by contacting Sharon Kaiser (skaiser@ calvarygr.org) at ext. 5077 or Judie Fielstra (jfielstra@ calvarygr.org) at ext. 5095. Go online to our Serving Ministry page to see some of our current serving needs. Promotion Sunday August 7 is Promotion Sunday for incoming 5th-12th grade students. GATHERING PLACE Tuesday morning Women’s
B i b l e ∙ St u d y
This fall, the Gathering Place Study (GPS) will be connecting women to Jesus and each other by creating a warm, loving atmosphere for growth in God’s Word, prayer, worship and community. We invite you to be a part of this new study! Beginning Tuesday, September 13, women will gather at 9:00am in the Fellowship Hall. Within the large group meeting we will have quality time to catch up with friends and make new ones, be inspired by thought provoking speakers, drama, music and testimonies. We’ll then break into small groups where we will actively discuss and study God’s Word until 11:15 am. This year, we will be studying the book of Matthew, the first book in the New Testament. While every group will study the same book of the Bible, each woman will be able to choose the type of small group she would like to join. We will offer five different electives for small group study: ŪŪ Beginner’s Study ŪŪ Mom’s with Preschoolers group ŪŪ One-year Intermediate group ŪŪ Three-year Intermediate group ŪŪ Advanced Study Register for the Gathering Place Study online at calvarygr.org/ women or pick up a registration form at the reception desk or Women’s Ministry bulletin board on the lower level of the church. Register by August 26 to ensure a spot in the small group of your choice. Something for the kids too! While mom is in the Gathering Place Study, GPS Kids will be a wonderful place for children birth to 6 years of age to learn God’s truth in a loving atmosphere. While the “big” GPS is studying Matthew, our little ones will learn from Matthew too! Teachers and helpers will use Bible stories, music and fun activities to reinforce the weekly lesson. For our older children, values, character building and the wordless book will also be part of the morning.

LUMIN8 Children’s Choir
LUMIN8 Children’s Choir begins September 15, 6:00-6:40pm, room 251
august 2011
There’s a lot of power in a name. It can convey identity, purpose, and direction. So what is the meaning behind the name LUMIN8? It is a form of the word, “illuminate,” which means to brighten with light; to light up. The purpose of LUMIN8 is to brighten our dark world with the light of God’s Word and the message of His love through music. The “8” in LUMIN8 is a reference to Psalms 8 (verse two), where the Psalmist says that children have a unique calling to speak God’s praise. “From the lips of children and infants, You have ordained praise….”
6
LUMIN8 will proclaim God’s glory in a variety of performances throughout the year: Sunday morning services, Child Dedication song, a Christmas program, and a spring concert. At the end of the year, the choir will record and produce a CD of original music written by the Children’s Ministry. The CD will be distributed to families within our ministry, and made available to Calvary Church as a whole. Songs will include the James memorization songs, the “big church” sermon series song, a song that summarizes the subject matter of our Wednesday WOW program, and several others directly related to our programming. LUMIN8 meets for practice on Wednesday night from 6:00-6:40pm. Children also participating in the WOW Wednesday programming, will be taken to their elective at 6:50pm. Registration for LUMIN8 is included on the Children’s Ministry registration form. (616) 956-9377 || calvarygr.org

This 12-week session equips teens with the God given tools to live a life of hope and the promise of a changed tomorrow. To register, contact Lou DeGraaf (ldegraaf@calvarygr.org) at ext. 3618. Men’s Bible Studies - Fall 2011 Fundamentals of the Faith How do we know the Bible is God's Word? What is sin and where did it come from? How is Jesus fully God and fully man? What are spiritual gifts? When and how will Christ return? Why should I pray? If you've asked questions like these, then "systematic theology" is no abstract term. It's an approach to finding answers every Christian needs to know in order to live a life that glorifies God. Men’s Ministry is offering Fundamentals of the Faith 2 – Bible Doctrine. This study takes a deeper dive into the doctrines that define the Christian faith and is recommended for those who are very familiar with the Bible. Cost is $20 and will be offered two different times. Wednesdays, beginning September 14, 6:30-8:00pm in Room 130/132 (open to women). Thursdays, beginning September 16, 6:30-8:00pm in Room 130/132. Finding Community By Tessa Keena
It was about three years ago that I signed up for a Calvary Community Group, and I remember it like it was yesterday. I joined a Community Group to get connected with other families at Calvary to study the Bible, fellowship, and meet others who had young families. Dustin and I were engaged earlier that year and I wanted us to have a group of people that could encourage us in our relationship with each other and with God. Susan contacted me in the spring and I remember how nice and inviting she was as she asked me if I would like to join the Community Group that she and her husband hosted at their house. Due to a scheduling conflict, we didn’t begin attending until the fall. Scott and Susan and the other families in the group welcomed us with open arms and have continued to do so ever since.

I don’t think there are enough words to describe how blessed we are to be a part of this group. They have been a source of wisdom, comfort, encouragement, love, and happiness for my family. We are probably the youngest couple in the group, but age has never been an issue. We study God’s word, we pray together and for each I don’t think there other, and we get just for felare enough words to together lowship sometimes. describe how blessed We have a very dywe are to be a part of namic group of people and our meetthis group. ings are always filled with in-depth conversations about God and the Bible and how it relates to us.

prayer. Our Community Group walked beside us and brought us meals after we came home from the hospital. They are really like a second family to the three of us. My family and I have seen God do many wonders in our lives over the past few years being part of our Community Group. God’s faithfulness has been abundant! We have prayed for many things and God worked through many situations. I remember asking for prayer for myself after my daughter’s parent/teacher conference that did not go so well. I was upset with the teacher and the school system, so I asked our group to pray that God would take away my anger and calm my spirit. When it came time for another meeting with the teacher, God moved inside of me and helped me through the situation so that His glory could be made known! We have many other stories of answered prayer and how we have been blessed by this group, but there probably is not enough space to write them! I would encourage everyone to take the time to look into becoming part of a Calvary Community Group. I know everyone is busy, but if anyone has an excuse not to join a group, it would be me. I go to school almost full-time, work part-time in an office, work at home with my own business, have a 9-year-old daughter, a husband, a home to take care of—plus we volunteer in the high school ministry. Yet we still make time for our community group! It is kind of like a date night for my husband and me twice a month. There are times that I feel exhausted and don’t feel like going, but I am always so glad that I do!
I have personally seen my relationship with God grow by leaps and bounds through my connection with the Community Group. Susan has been a mentor for me over the past few years and I feel very comfortable opening up about anything that I might be going through. She has been there for me with wisdom and Interested in joining a community group? See page 15 prayer. Lies Women Believe
This study sheds light on how we can be set free to walk in God’s grace, forgiveness, and abundant life. As women we are all daughters of Eve and can easily be deceived. We believe lies about God, about ourselves and about our families. These lies keep us from the freedom God promises us through Jesus Christ. Claim the Truth and find freedom. This group will meet Wednesdays, 6:30-8:00pm for ten weeks at the Yellow House beginning October 5. If you’re interested in joining this support group, contact Regina (rscovill@calvarygr.org) at ext. 3672.

Special Needs Ministry Volunteer Training The annual Special Needs Volunteer training will be taking place on Saturday, August 27 in room 108. The training will begin with key speaker, Barb Newman doing a presentation on Sensory integration. So what‘s sensory integration all about? Sensory Integration – Do you have children or adults covering their ears because noises are too loud? Refusing to enter a crowded large group setting? Getting very upset when someone brushes up against him or her? It could stem from sensory differences. Understand what it is and how to help. (Very common in children and some adults with ADD, ADHD, ASD, and other neurological differences). Participants will: - Discover that we have more than 5 senses - Learn about the sensory systems - Discover what one might see when the senses are over or under sensitive - Understand some ideas churches can try to help that setting be a more comfortable place for each individual If you are interested in learning more, we invite you to sign up to hear Barb speak. You do not have to be involved in the Special Needs Ministry. This presentation is open to anyone who would like to learn more about sensory integration . Following Barb’s presentation those involved in the Special Needs Ministry will have ministry specific trainings. If you are curious about what is going on in the special needs ministry here at Calvary we invite you to attend these ministry specific trainings as well.

Women, are you looking for a place to serve?
Have you participated in Tuesday Morning Bible Study for years and are willing to ask God if it is now time for you to serve by sharing God’s love with these precious little one? Do you have a teaching background that could be used to share the excitement of God’s word? The GPS Kids program runs simultaneously with the Gathering Place Study and will allow those with children to participate in the Tuesday morning Bible Study. We are looking for additional women who are willing to serve the children in GPS Kids. This is an opportunity to impact a child's life and plant seeds which can lead a child to Christ. A Monday morning Bible Study will be available to all workers who would like to participate. Those who have been a part of this over the last months eagerly look forward to this special community each Monday. Our goal is to provide support and training among our children’s volunteers. For more information, contact Pam Formsma (pmformsma@gmail.com).
Pam Formsma will be coordinating GPS Kids and would like to share the journey that led her to this serving opportunity. We hope this will encourage you as you explore serving at Calvary this fall. My desire to serve in the children’s area on Tuesday mornings came unexpectedly. During one of our leader’s training meetings we discussed spiritual gifts. That morning as I was walking into church I had asked God’s direction for the area He wanted me to serve. I wanted to be open to His call not relying on preconceived ideas of my own. As I finished my “test” I found shepherding to be one of the strongest gifts. When Judie Fielstra addressed our group on the topic of Shepherding she said, ”Actually children are some of the most important in this area.” It was at that moment I felt an overwhelming heart for the children of the GPS. This was not even on my radar screen! I have not worked in children’s for years and have 13 grandchildren to bless! God began then to put ideas and direction alongside the desire He had placed in me to shepherd these children. My own testimony includes the fact that I took Jesus into my heart in a preschool classroom in church. I really did not know this area had been such an area of need for the planning committee. I do know my willingness to serve began with my desire to obey and be open in this process. I am humbled to begin this new work and look forward to all He has in store for GPS Kids.

Prayer for Muslims The yearly observance of Ramadan occurs in August this year, and requires the one billion Muslims all over the world to abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs during the daylight hours in an effort to purify the soul, refocus attention on God, and practice self-sacrifice. During Ramadan, many Muslims are actively searching for a more meaningful spiritual relationship. The 30-Day Prayer Calendar educates us as to how to pray and be ambassadors for Christ to Muslims right here in West Michigan. Prayer calendars are located at the Information Centers, and the children’s edition is available at the Children’s check-in desks, to help guide your family devotions during August.

In October we will start collecting items for the Christmas Child boxes. A large percentage of children around the world are impoverished, and do not have their daily needs met, let alone receive anything extra at Christmas. Be a blessing to these children out of your abundance, and be blessed in return knowing you have provided for their needs, and given them gifts they would not otherwise receive.

inspire Special Needs Ministry The feeling of walking into a room and having a room full of people so excited to see you is a something that can never be put into words. When people with disabilities can be so happy and act like nothing in the world can slow them down it makes you reconsider your own priorities in life and also makes you reevaluate your own disparities. Square dancing with the special needs population and seeing the joy on their faces makes me forget about all the worries I may have in life. These people do not even realize or even consider the disadvantages they have, but instead grasp and embrace their disability and live each day to its fullest potential. How many other people do you see jumping up and down or rolling their wheelchairs in circles and clapping with the biggest smiles on their faces at the thought of square dancing? The special needs population can touch a special place in everyone’s hearts. By Ed Geskus Go-Getter Update By the grace of God through faithful volunteers and staff, the Go-Getter classes continue to flourish and grow! On Sunday mornings room 112 fills up with between 70-80 joyful students, drinking coffee, socializing with their friends and worshipping God. The room is filled with the Holy Spirit week after week. With growth comes more change, which I know for many can be difficult. God allowed room 112 to be a meeting place for Go-Getters for several years now and it has been a room full of love and friendships. The room is very full, hot, and a potential safety issue when and if an emergency occurred. On July 10, along with Calvary’s shift to summer meeting times, the Go-Getters moved to the chapel. The summer meeting times will be in effect through August 28. During this time period, the Go-Getter class will be meeting at 10:45 which will be the second service in the summer. All three segments of Special Needs Ministry will be meeting at 10:45. There will not be programming available on September 4.

Explorers/Special Treasures The Special Needs Ministry department has three distinct programs; “Go Getters” for adults, “Seekers” for youth, and “Special Treasures” for our younger children. We take time each year to evaluate many things and over the past year we have put some “good thinking” into renaming “Special Treasures”. As young children grow and learn they often do so through exploring and since Sunday mornings are all about exploring God’s word, it seems fitting that we are “Explorers”. We understand getting comfortable with a new name takes time – so we will be patient together.

GATHERING PLACE
What people are saying about the new Women’s Ministry Tuesday morning Bible Study Susan Sorensen, Women’s Ministry Pastoral Staff Rep. “I am really excited about the new Bible study format for women this year. Much prayer has gone into this transition to one gathering place for the women who join us on Tuesday mornings. My greatest desire is that you be warmly received into this community of women representing all ages and places in the journey of knowing our Lord better. I look forward to watching God continue to work in the lives of women through the Gathering Place Study!” Jen Benham, GPS Leadership Team “As a creature of habit I was a little unsure about the change this fall with a new Bible study format. I really felt the Lord leading me to be a part of the change by joining the leadership team. Surrounded by wonderful godly women immersed in the Word, I never wanted to leave our times together! Because of my experience with the leadership, I look forward to God’s presence showing up in powerful ways this year.” Pat Cebulski, Women’s Advisory Committee “God has been faithful and has revealed himself to us as our committee has worked through the birthing process of the Gathering Place Study for the last two years. We feel confident that our renewed focus on community and new electives offered for different levels of spiritual maturity came from sincerely seeking His face. We praise God for all that He has and will provide on Tuesday mornings.”

I recently read the following, “If nothing ever changed, there’d be no butterflies” (Author Unknown). So ladies, let’s soar together this fall and see the incredible things that God has prepared for us!”
