What is your role at Calvary Church?
5Questions with Sara Tindall
Facilitator, Middle School Ministry and Admin. Assistant, Neighbors International
4 | August 2013 | calvarygr.org
I currently serve as the 7/8 facilitator for Middle School Ministry and as the administrative assistant for Neighbors International, a ministry to local international college students. My days are a mixture of helping to plan and prepare for events, praying for and discipling middle school students, supporting the team behind neighbors international, and ordering a surprising number of Bibles in Chinese, Arabic and Spanish.
2
What encourages you most as you minister at Calvary?
I am encouraged again and again by the people of Calvary who live passionately committed to loving God and their neighbors.
3
How has God recently revealed Himself in your life?
Most recently, I have been absolutely overwhelmed with thankfulness to God. He has revealed a deeper understanding of just how much undeserved grace, goodness and love he has shown to me and continues to shower me with. Colossians 2:6-7 says, “So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him, rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.” I pray for such a life marked with overflowing thankfulness!
4
How have you experienced life{together}?
Last year my mom was suddenly diagnosed with stage 4 Pancreatic cancer, and was given a year, at most, to live. I was shocked, and abruptly many things in my life began to change. But, in what could have been a dark and lonely season, God surrounded me with people of such kindness, steadfast faith, encouragement and faithful prayer. For every ounce I poured into my family during those hard days, gallons were poured into me from friends, staff members, students, parents and even strangers who had heard my story. It has now been a year and a half since my mom’s diagnosis and she has been cancer free for six months— the prayers of the faithful are mighty! Praise God for His Church and for allowing us to live life together.
5
How can the Calvary family pray for you and your ministry this month?
Please pray that I will continue to surrender myself to obeying God and submitting to whatever He may be asking of me! Pray for the upcoming fall; for new students, small group leader needs, and for a clear vision of his plan for the year.

Raised by an Amish family, Katie Lapp always felt the call of another life. Now, in this DVD, her quest to find her birthmother has drawn her into the world of the “Englishers.” Two very different men try to help her overcome a devious scheme to steal her rightful inheritance. Kind-hearted Englisher, Justin reaches out to discover Katie’s secrets, while her childhood sweetheart, Daniel, sacrifices his own happiness for her future. Katie’s heart is divided between two worlds as love reveals the truth in The Confession, a moving saga based on the hit novel by best-selling author Beverly Lewis.

Aidan Quinn and Andie McDowell deliver emotionally stirring performances as the parents of Jon Abbate, a rising football star at Wake Forest University. Their lives are suddenly shattered when the family’s youngest son, Luke, is killed in a tragic accident. Inspired by Luke’s memory, Jon courageously leads the Wake Forest team in a series of last minute victories – leading to a thrilling climax that will make you stand up and cheer. Ask anyone in Louisiana and they’ll tell you that the Bayou State’s favorite first family doesn’t live in the governor’s mansion but in the backwoods. Meet the Robertsons, who run Duck Commander, a homegrown mom-and-pop turned sporting empire selling top-of-the-line duck calls and decoys out of salvaged swamp wood. Pick up one of the DVDs from Season One and enjoy how this clan meets each days challenges with a special brand of Southern know-how, humor and prayer.
In the DVD, The Potential Inside, pro-cyclist Chris Carmik is no stranger to victory, and he has the trophies and fame to prove it. Focusing only on his career instead of his family and faith, Chris’s only worry is his next win. When an unexpected tragedy takes the life of his young daughter, Chris finds his own life changed in an instant. Now, estranged from his grieving wife and consumed with guilt, Chris struggles beneath the weight of his selfish past. When he surrenders everything to Christ, Chris finds peace and resolves to rebuild his life and serve his family as God intended.

life{together} experiencing community at calvary
Serve God with your community ... And See What God Will Do! A Story from the Community Group of Pam and Chris Groom as Shared with Lee Content, Pastoral Staff, Calvary Community Have you ever wondered what Community Groups do besides discussing the sermon notes and praying? Here is one story of a family group who was prompted by the Holy Spirit to step out of their comfort zone to assist a refugee family from Nepal. In the process, they watched God do miracle after miracle as preparations came together for this family to come to America.
would choose the perfect family for them. Holly Groom prayed on a daily basis that the family would have one or more girls for her to befriend. Pam herself prayed for a large family, and dreamed that perhaps there would be a baby and a grandmother. Two weeks prior to arrival, they found out that the Baral family had seven members. Besides a mom and dad, there were three girls and a baby boy, plus grandma.
What inspired this service project? Martin Hughes, a member of Chris and Pam Groom’s community group, was looking for a family friendly service opportunity that would help both the adults and children grow. He read a book entitled Outcasts United by Warren St. John that inspired him to consider assisting refugees being resettled right here in Grand Rapids. He presented the idea at the next Community Group meeting. “The group wasn’t too interested at first,” explained Pam, the hostess, “but my daughter Holly (age 11) had been begging me for a chance to really make a difference for God, and this seemed the perfect opportunity.” Spurred on by Holly’s enthusiasm, the group invited Deb Hoekwater from Bethany Christian Services to their next Community Group meeting to discuss the possibility. Deb explained that having a group to welcome the family at the airport and assist the case worker really makes a difference in the lives of incoming refugees, helping them better adjust.
As the group anticipated and prepared for this refugee family’s arrival, they began to witness miracle after miracle - from the smallest details like providing linens, to the largest detail of providing housing for a family of seven! God was clearly working in so many ways. Pam summed up their experience this way: “This has been a wonderful experience for me and my family. It has also been a nice community group activity where our small group can work together to be the hands of Christ to do something of value. My kids have had the privilege of praying and seeing those prayers answered. They have learned to love and plan for those they have never seen before. God has miraculously provided in many ways. I’m so pleased to witness and participate in this!”
Our thanks to the Groom Community Group for demonstrating Christ’s heart and hands in this endeavor! May God continue to bless your group Before they even knew the family’s name and country of origin, this for stepping out in such a wonderful way! community group started praying for their family. They prayed that God 6 | August 2013 | calvarygr.org
Did You Know... The medical, educational and social service communities give labels to people such as “autism,”“cerebral palsy, “dementia,” and “macular degeneration.” These labels can be useful for understanding and helping people, but a person is not his or her label. My mother is diagnosed with “osteoarthritis.” It’s important for me to know this about her so I understand her mobility limitations and whether or not our trips to the grocery store have to be shortened because of the amount of pain she is experiencing. I don’t overly focus on my mother’s diagnosis, in fact some days I forget it is there. Nevertheless, it’s important I understand this part of who my mom is. Similarly, as we seek to be Christ’s church in this place as it relates to welcoming and caring for individuals with special needs, it’s important that we recognize people as individuals first, their abilities their gifts, their joys, challenges and their desire to be in relationship with others and Christ. Knowing about and understanding a “label” is only a part of the “welcome.” Knowing the person is being Christ’s church. Tip on building relationship with people with disabilities: • Whatever you do, don’t let fear of saying or doing something “wrong” prevent you from getting to know a person with a disability. If unsure of what to say when you first meet, say “Hello” or “I’m glad you are here” and when you see them again, you may be just a bit more comfortable. Some excerpts come from a resource entitled: Inclusion Handbook; by disabilities concerns CRC & RCA
Picnics in the Park
Each summer the Special Needs ministry hosts three “Park Picnics” where everyone brings a sack lunch, enjoys fellowship and then an evening of fun activities. This year we began with our annual square dance at the Christian Reformed Conference Grounds. It was a beautiful evening of dancing and eating s’mores around the campfire hosted by Rick and Elaine Yost. July and August picnics were held at Johnson Park. Everyone enjoys the variety of games and activities that are planned. What a great way to spend a summer evening. For more information about the Special Needs Ministry at Calvary Church, contact Judi Warner (jwarner@calvarygr.org) at 956-9377.

×parent connection×
Are you the parent of a high school student? Are you looking to connect with other parents for fellowship and support? Parenting teenagers can be uniquely rewarding and challenging and we don’t want anyone to face the journey alone. UNITED Parent Connection (UPC) meets monthly for prayer, support and connection. UPC is also a point of support for Calvary’s High School Ministry. We pray reguarly for the staff and volunteers of UNITED and provide opportunities to show appreciation for their ministry. If you’ve ever wondered what’s going on at UNITED or how you can best pray for your child’s small group leader, be sure to meet up with the UPC. Our first meeting of the school year will be on Sunday, September 22 at 6:00pm in room 129. We will pray together and hear Pastor Aaron’s vision for the next year of High School Ministry. Whether your child is connected with UNITED or not, all parents of high school students are encouraged to join us. Register at MyCalvaryGR.org by September 16, so we can make sure we have enough snacks! In the midst of the “back to school” rush, we urge you to set aside a quiet, reflective time of fasting and prayer for Calvary’s young people. Together we will spend 24 hours fasting* and then gather at Calvary for a self-guided prayer tour. Participants will walk through the Children’s, Special Needs’, Students’ and College ministry settings, praying for their specific needs and learning what each unique age-group is facing in the year ahead. Everyone at Calvary is invited to participate in this back-to-school prayer event. Please note that childcare is not provided. RSVP at MyCalvaryGR.org by August 11.

All Church Serving Day On the morning of Saturday, September 14, Calvary Church will participate in the Mayors’ Grand River clean-up. The West Michigan Environmental Action Council and Grand Rapids Young Professionals will host the 10th Anniversary Mayors’ Grand River Clean Up beginning at Sixth Street Park. Over the past 10 years thousands of volunteers have picked up well over 100,000 pounds of refuse from the banks of the Grand River and its tributaries in Grand Rapids, Walker, Grandville and Wyoming. This will be a great family or small group activity. Watch for more details in the bulletin, the enews, the September Calvary Life, and on the web.

GATHERING PLACE Tuesday morning Women’s
B i b l e ∙ St u d y
The Gathering Place Study (GPS) connects women to Jesus and each other by creating a warm, loving atmosphere for growth in God’s Word, prayer, worship and community. We invite you to join us. This year’s focus is “Peter and the Power of a Transformed Life.” We’ll explore Acts 1-12, 1 Peter and 2 Peter to discover how to be steadfast and persevere in the true grace of God. The theme verse is from 1 Peter 5:12b, “This is the true grace of God. Stand fast in it.” Beginning Tuesday, September 10, women will gather at 9:00am in the Fellowship Hall. Within the large group meeting we will have quality time to catch up with friends and make new ones, be inspired by thought provoking speakers, drama, music and testimonies. We’ll then break into small groups where we will actively discuss and study God’s Word until 11:15am. Something for the kids too! While mom is in the Gathering Place Study, GPS Kids will be a wonderful place for children birth to 6 years of age to learn God’s truth in a loving atmosphere. While the “big” GPS is studying Acts and 1-2 Peter, our little ones will learn the same things! Teachers and helpers will use Bible stories, music and fun activities to reinforce the weekly lesson. For our older children, values, character building and the wordless book will also be part of the morning. a warm, loving atmosphere for growth in God’s Word
Through GPS I’ve gained many new friends, even an especially good one that I enjoy spending time with outside of Tuesday mornings! I’ve found community and a sense of belonging in a larger church setting and I’ve found a deeper love and passion for the Word of God. I could not be more grateful for how the Lord has used GPS in my life! Paula Lapata Register for the Gathering Place Study online at MyCalvaryGR.org or pick up a registration form at the reception desk or Women’s Ministry bulletin board on the lower level of the church. 2012-2013 Elders & Deacons
A Note from the elders What We Believe & Teach Back in June, we introduced the congregation to a document called What We Teach. It is the culmination of four years of prayer and work by our Elder Board and others as we have sought to strengthen and clarify Calvary’s statement of belief. The document has been available at the Information Center at the back of the sanctuary all summer and, if you have not yet done so, we encourage you to pick one up and read through it. It contains two things: a one page summary called What We Believe, and a more detailed explanation called What We Teach. We are asking the congregation to let us know if there is anything in the document that is unclear or difficult to understand. Our hope is to produce an end product that can be easily explained to anyone. If you have questions or suggestions, let us know by email at elders@calvarygr.org. If you prefer to ask questions in person, please join us on Sunday, August 18 at 9:00am in room 132, when we will be having a question and answer session about the What We Believe and What We Teach documents. If you are interested in attending this meeting, contact Karen (community@calvarygr.org) at ext. 5173 before Monday, August 12. At this year’s Annual Meeting on September 15, we plan to present the latest version of the What We Teach document to the congregation for a vote that would permit its use in teaching settings (such as the Membership Class) for one year, allowing for additional suggestions and modifications to be made during that year. Our hope is to have final versions ready in the autumn of 2014.
If you have any questions or comments you would like to share with an elder, please see the list above the blue line. If you would to contact a deacon, they are listed below the blue line.

Pew Bible Transition As you may be aware, the 1984 NIV Bible, which has served as Calvary’s pew Bible for many years, is no longer being published. After prayerful consideration and study the elders have decided Calvary will switch to the 2011 NIV version (not to be confused with the TNIV version) this September. We believe that this translation is a good representation of the original author’s intended meaning and that its readability will enable a smooth transition for our congregation, even enabling simultaneous use along with the older 1984 version. Calvary recognizes that there are a wide range of English translations of the Bible (from literal to paraphrased versions). All of them make interpretive decisions and thereby have their own strengths and weaknesses. The choice of the 2011 NIV as a pew Bible should not be considered to be an endorsement of this translation as the “best” for all situations, we simply need to adopt a single version for use in our worship services for clarity and consistency. If you are considering a Bible for personal study, many other options are available including the NASB, ESV and the NET study Bible. If you have questions about this transition, please contact one of the elders listed at right or email us at elders@calvarygr.org.

• Times of worship and guided corporate prayer
Night of Power – Ramadan “What might happen if we spend serious time, waiting on the Lord and asking Him to reach Muslims around the world?” “What kind of joy might we experience as we join together and lift up prayers – in many forms?” “If Muslims can stay up praying all night, can we?” These are the questions that the Mission & Outreach team here at Calvary wants you to help us answer. Join us for all or part of our 12 hours of community prayer, from 6:30 PM, Friday, August 2, until 6:30 AM, Saturday, August 3, to pray that Muslims – around the world and right here in our community – will come to know Jesus’ love and power to save. All are welcome – whether or not you are able to commit to the entire 12 hours! We’ll even have “To-Go” prayer packets so you can join us from home as you are able. To keep our minds, hearts, and bodies fresh throughout this time before the Lord, we’re planning:
. . . a church that goes to the least reached peoples around the world
. . . a church that
prays
for Muslims
Will you join us in prayer for Muslims around the world during Ramadan this year?
• Times for prayer as individuals and in small and larger groups
• Ideas about how to pray the words of the Bible for Muslims • Ways to record what you may hear God saying through prayer and the Word • Video and printed materials to inform our prayers about the Muslim world • Break times and refreshments throughout the night We’ll also have opportunities to pray for the many aspects of ministry to Muslims including our own missionaries and partners in the Muslim world, God’s continued use of visions and dreams to prepare the hearts of Muslims, media outreach, Muslim children and families, boldness and protection for believers of Muslim background (BMBs) as they share with friends and family. We’ll take a “virtual trip” around the Muslim world – from North Africa to Indonesia, with key prayer points from each region. Come join us – for an hour or all twelve! You can register for this at MyCalvaryGR.org or just show up.
Night of Power | Chapel 6:30pm, Friday, August 2 to 6:30am, Saturday, August 3 Each year during Ramadan, Muslims set aside one night as a special time of prayer. Called the “Night of Power” it commemorates the day when they believe God first began to reveal the Qur’an to Mohammed. Staying up and praying all night long on that date is said to draw one especially close to God to experience His blessing. This year at Calvary, we will dedicate 12 hours of community prayer for Muslims to come to know Jesus during this night.

Community is a place where you belong; a place where you develop relationships with other Christians and do life together. When you experience true community, you have close friends who meet together, pray together, grow together in God’s Word, and care for one another. In community you will be loved; you will be valued; you will be transformed more into Christ’s image. If you realize it is time to engage with people in a new way and want to be a part of a community group, visit the Connection Point on Sunday mornings or contact Brenda Neher (community@calvarygr.org).
