REDEEM YOUR TRAVEL TIME WITH OUR NEWEST AUDIO CDs! Adopted For Life

By: Russell D. Moore One of the bright young leaders in the Christian world combines his own experience of adopting sons with a powerful message to the Church about the key role it can play in promoting adoption. This is a wonderful book in which Russell very effectively weaves in mankind’s own story of adoption by God. The gospel of Jesus Christ means our families and churches ought to be at the forefront of the adoption of orphans close to home and around the world. God’s Smuggler

By: Brother Andrew Brother Andrew began his work in 1955 as a one-man mission – visiting, teaching, and taking Bibles to Christians behind the iron curtain. Crossing closed borders, he prayed, “Lord, in my luggage I have scripture I want to take to your children. When you were on earth, you made blind eyes see. Now, I pray, make seeing eyes blind. Do not let them see those things you do not want them to see.” And they never did. For 35 years, this young Dutch factory worker’s incredible adventures testify of God’s step-by-step guidance and hour-by-hour provision – available to all who follow His call. The Heart of Remarriage By: Gary and Greg Smalley Couples who remarry are full of the same promise and possibility as those who are marrying for the first time, but they also face unique challenges that must be overcome if their union is to stand the test of time. The Heart of Remarriage goes straight to the heart of these problems and guides you to a fulfilling, lasting marriage that is a haven of grace and security for your whole family. In the Company of Others By: Jan Karon Retired Episcopal priest, Tim Kavanaugh is making good on his old promise to show his FICTION wife, Cynthia, the land of his Irish ancestors. After arriving at Lough Arrow guest lodge; Cynthia is startled by an intruder, resulting in painful damage to her recently fractured ankle. A valuable and cherished painting vanishes without a trace. And the shocking secret at the center of a bitterly estranged Irish family is exposed. Set against the music of Irish song, In the Company of Others reminds us of our need to be heard and the reconciliation that comes with confession. The Library is located across from Fellowship Hall on the lower level. Our hours are: Sunday 9:15–11:15am and 5:15– 5:45pm, Wednesday 9:15–9:45am and 6:00–7:30pm, Saturday 7:00 – 7:30pm. Among other programs within our ministry, I am especially excited about what God is doing in children through the memorization of the book of James, one chapter a year. This program (original to Calvary), called “James Gang,” encourages children to memorize Scripture, and also to “put your faith into action” through serving projects! As James says, “Faith without deeds is useless.” I thought it would be helpful for you to hear some Frequently Asked Questions from other parents about the James Gang:

“The Big D” is a ministry designed to encourage and empower teens to deal with their feelings, fears, and emotions while experiencing the divorce or separation of their parents. It is very common for teens to experience a variety of conflicting emotions during this time. Many react with anger, withdrawal and intense pain, carrying these unresolved emotions into their own futures. Because of the divorce or separation of their parents, teens find themselves in a hopeless situation they did not choose. That is where “The Big D” comes in. This 12-week session equips teens with the God given tools to live a life of hope and the promise of a changed tomorrow.

Lenten Season (March 9 – April 23)

Lent is a time for spiritual preparation, leading up to Holy Week and Easter. It’s about focusing our hearts on our relationship with God. During Lent, we encourage you to fast from something, setting aside certain foods or nonessential activites. The purpose of fasting isn’t depravation, but dedication to God. Here at Calvary, we encourage you to participate in this early Christian tradition. The fruit of Lent is both a deeper relationship with God now and a more exuberant and mindful celebration of Easter in six weeks. During this season, every time you think about what you have given up, the hope is that you would do two things: 1) Thank Jesus for suffering for you; and 2) Pray that those whom Jesus suffered for, who do not know Him, will come to the Easter service and hear the gospel.

Palm Sunday (April 17) services at 8:10, 9:40 & 11:15am

The Bible passages of Maundy Thursday can be found in Matthew 26:17-30, Mark 14:12-26, Luke 22:7-38, John 13:1-17, and I Corinthians 11:23-25.

Good Friday

Good Friday is the day Christ died on the cross, the Friday before Easter. As the most somber day in the Christian calendar, it is a day for prayer, repentance, and meditation on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross. Since Christ’s death on the cross is central to the Christian faith, the events of that day should be ever on our minds. We celebrate Good Friday with a subdued evening service, remembering the night of Christ’s death.

The Bible tells us that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted Him by waving palm branches and covering His path with them. Immediately following this great time of celebration, Jesus begins His journey to the cross.

Easter Sunday

(April 22)

The Bible passages for Good Friday can be found in Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, and John 19. (April 24) Sunrise Service, 8:10, 9:40 & 11:15am

From the earliest days of the church, Easter has been celebrated by all Christians everywhere. As the most important day in the Christian calendar, Easter Sunday is the day that we celebrate the bodily Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Our observation of Lent and Holy Week will better prepare our hearts to celebrate the power and joy of Christ’s resurrection on Easter. The Bible passages for Easter can be found in Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20.

service at 7:00pm

On Palm Sunday, we celebrate Christ’s Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem the week before His death and resurrection. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week.

The Bible passages of Palm Sunday can be found in Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44 and John 12:12-19.

Traditionally the Christian Church has referred to this day as Maundy Thursday, from the Latin word “mandatum.” The term is usually translated “commandment,” from John’s account of this night. According to the book of John, as Jesus and the disciples were eating their final meal together before His arrest, He washed the disciples’ feet to illustrate humility and servanthood. During the Passover (Lord’s Supper), Jesus took bread and wine and asked His Father to bless it. He broke the bread, giving it to His disciples saying, “This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then He took the cup of wine and said, “This wine is the token of God’s new covenant to save you−an agreement sealed with the blood I will pour out for you.” During our Maundy Thursday service, you will see people washing the feet of others to demonstrate humility and servanthood. We will also partake in the Lord’s Supper just like Jesus did on the night He was betrayed.

2 Corinthians 8:6-7

Extraordinary Givers by Ron Haas, Elder “So we urged Titus, since he had earlier made a beginning, to bring also to completion this act of grace on your part. But just as you excel in everything—in faith, in speech, in knowledge, in complete earnestness and in your love for us—see that you also excel in this grace of giving.”

What’s the difference between ordinary and extraordinary? Would it be fair to say that ordinary Christians are content with the status quo, not interested in overexerting themselves, and do just enough to get by? it’s really the difference between half-heartedness and following the Lord with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. For some reason, we don’t usually associate the concept of being extraordinary with how we handle our money, but the apostle Paul did. He gave the Corinthian believers four reasons to become extraordinary givers.

Generous Giving Demonstrates Spiritual Maturity Paul encourages the believers in Corinth to excel in their spiritual walk in six ways: faith, speech, knowledge, complete earnestness, love, and giving. These spiritual disciplines are foundational for spiritual growth. Walk by faith. share the Gospel. Read and memorize the Bible. Be genuine. Love others. Give. We love to hear inspiring messages on these topics -- at least the first five. How often have you heard a convicting sermon about generous giving and responded, “Great sermon, Pastor!” We’re happy to be challenged in every other area of our lives, but we put money in a different category. For Paul, extraordinary giving was another mark of true spirituality.

Generous Giving Requires Actions, Not Good Intentions When the Corinthian church first heard about the desperate situation facing believers in Jerusalem, they immediately decided to take a special benevolence offering. Their eagerness to help inspired other churches to give. Unfortunately, their initial good intentions didn’t translate into a gift. Paul sent titus to

Generous Giving Demands Excellence, Not Mediocrity Do you give more now than when you first came to faith? to “excel in the grace of giving” implies continuous improvement. be generous. They don’t waste money on things that don’t matter, but give to impact eternity. Extraordinary giving just doesn’t happen, it requires a plan and the discipline to follow through. anyone can be a mediocre giver. Generous Giving Is Motivated by Grace, Not Law Most believers equate “giving,” with “tithing.” The word, “tithe” means 10 percent, but the old testament actually required additional offerings above the tithe which added up to around 23 percent of a family’s income. in 2 Corinthians 8 & 9, Paul emphasizes “the grace of giving,” which frames giving in a different light. as new testament believers, we are not under Mosaic Law, but grace. The Pharisees were so fixated on living by the letter of the law that they even tithed their garden herbs (Luke 11:42). Paul releases us from a formula and invites us to give generously. if you took an honest look at your checkbook, is your giving ordinary, less than ordinary, or extraordinary? If you want to study more about what it means to “excel in the grace of giving,” check out www.generousgiving.com.

engage Spring Fling or MOZAMBIQUE MISSIOn? It is exciting to discover that ten empty nesters have foregone their annual spring fling to travel to Calvary’s adopted village of Chinhangane in Mozambique. On April 27, this team, lead by Rika Diephouse, will launch the 2011 Short Term Mission Season. The first stop on the April trip will be at Volta a Biblia to help with and witness the graduation of Sandros and Modi. Calvary has supported this young family by providing their tuition to a three-year Bible School in Macia. We will celebrate our first graduates! Key strategies for the trip: • Spiritual Training: to engage the spiritual leaders in God's Word through interactive Bible Study • Children and Youth: To demonstrate God's love, using the Lord's Prayer as our guide so the children will understand who God is and that He cares for them. • Business: To teach Biblical principles related to business and how God wants us to handle our resources. • Sewing: To continue building sewing skills to help earn money for the purchase of a truck to transport produce to market. • Discipleship: To come alongside the women who have begun a new relationship with the Lord, telling Bible stories that will help them grow spiritually. Team verse: “My purpose is that they may be encouraged in heart and united in love, so that they may have the full riches of complete understanding in order that they may know the mystery of God, namely Christ, in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge” (Colossians 2:2-3). Additional teams will travel to Mozambique in July and October; to Odessa, Ukraine to host vacation bible school and men’s and women’s Bible Studies; and to Central Asia where we are engaged in seeing people transformed by Christ through the ministry of competent and godly business leaders who view business as a ministry calling.

inspire WHY DOES CALVARY FOCUS ON CENTRAL ASIA? Calvary Church has been involved in each of these areas through mobilization, education and resources. Initials are used to protect the identity of organizations that are active in the country.

Why does Calvary focus on Central Asia? • The economics are usually built around bribes. • The political situation is unstable in many Central Asian countries. • Many ethnic groups hate each other. • Leaders are often dictators with strong connections to communism. • Believers are persecuted, imprisoned, beaten, fined for their faith. • The church in many of the countries of Central Asia has been forced underground.

ability to have sustainable ministries early in the establishment of the church. God is at work. People are coming to Jesus through EE on a daily basis. God is at work. The word of God continues to be translated into the heart languages of the people. God is at work. The national churches are growing and reproducing biblical disciples. God is at work. National pastors are trained, renewed, and return to shepherd their flocks through ministries like DAI and others.

Why does Calvary focus on Central Asia?

• Because we have been commanded to make disciples of all nations. • Because in just one small area of Central Asia, there are still over 40 unreached people groups. • Because we adopted the Uzbek people group in the 90s and we are sticking with them. • Because our persecuted brothers and sisters need our prayers. • Because Calvary has been used of God to be a catalytic, prime mover in the region.

Noe Palacios and Pastor Bruce recently returned from the yearly consultation on the region. Noe was able to network and consult on leadership development and Business as Mission. Bruce spoke to the Central Asia Leadership Council. He also brought the closing message and led the communion service as the meetings came to their conclusion. Pastor Bruce has also served on the Steering Committee as Chair. Both Noe and Bruce are part of a leadership team organizing the North American Central Asia Forum.

Special Needs Ministry History As we celebrate 25 years of Special Needs programs at Calvary Church in 2011, we would like to reflect on the evolution of the ministry. In 1986, out of concern for the spiritual well being of their children, a group of concerned parents began a Friendship Class on Wednesday evening for their children with Special Needs. Shortly after that, they established a Sunday school class to help meet the needs of the children with year-round programming. In 1990 a group of parents, professionals, and other interested individuals met to discuss the growing needs, burdens, and development of the children and their families. Using the life of Mephibosheth and the parallels it has with the lives of our special needs population, the group adopted the name Mephibosheth to represent their mission. Their purpose was twofold; to teach and to outreach. Many additional ideas that they had were: housing, respite, circle of friends, counseling, teaching of daily living skills, and staffing. From 1994-2005 very little was recorded about the progress made in this initial group of individuals. Both classes flourished, one named “Friendship” and other named “Challengers.” However, the hopes and dreams outlined by the group formed in 1990 had not been realized. Teaching and outreach were still the main focus of the classes. In 2005, both classes took on the name “Go-Getters for Jesus,” a class exclusively for adults with special needs. A few years later, another group began called “Special Treasures” which targeted children with special needs; and a few years after that, “Seekers,” a class for youth with special needs, began. In 2008 we officially became a ministry of Special Needs at Calvary, and God blessed the ministry with a director and a facilitator. God continues to bless the flourishing ministry with tremendous growth for His eternal kingdom, with classes, events, and purposeful inclusion, and so much more.

1986 – 2011

face to face

with our Special Needs Ministry Team Jenny Davis The Special Needs Ministry has been a tremendous blessing in my life and has played a big part in furthering my walk with Christ. Sitting on the sidelines is not an option in this ministry; you are pulled in by the welcoming, forgiving, and loving community that is completely devoted to praising our Heavenly Father. There are no judgments or insecurities to think about with this body of believers because each person is unique in a special way and there is an overwhelming understanding that we were each crafted in His image, no matter our abilities. I am passionate about the work that is being done in each student’s life and grateful for the blessings they each have given me. Pam Cook As a mom of a special needs son, I know what an incredible blessing it was for me when Calvary Church welcomed my family with open arms. I now work part-time assisting the directors. I am excited about meeting the needs of very special people. I want to pass on the love and acceptance of Christ to all who come. I am God’s tool to spread encouragement and hope where the need is great. I am blessed continually through the people I minister to and with. I am part of an amazing team that brainstorms every week about how to meet needs in new and exciting ways in the body of Christ here at Calvary. Marv Snedeker My passion is seeking my God and His leading. Three years ago, He brought me to the Special Needs Ministry. He was leading me into a new phase of my life’s journey that He had lovingly prepared me for, even though at the time I did not see it. Ministering with Special Needs adults has taught me to not look at the outward appearance but to look on the heart. I don’t believe any other ministry effort is more poignant in revealing this truth about our God. I deeply love this ministry effort and this people group because it has shown

22 (616) 956-9377 || calvarygr.org

me in real life the significance of this attribute of my God. I have come to believe that the disability that God is most concerned about is the disability of the heart apart from Jesus Christ. An individual is made whole when his heart is right with God!

Craig Johnston I came into the Special Needs Ministry with no knowledge of or experience with people with special needs. I soon discovered that the adults I work with are the most encouraging and uplifting people I could meet. I thought that I would be ministering to them but learned that they ministered to me just as much. They have been a most forgiving and gracious group showing love and laughter and not afraid to express how they feel. During this time of my life I have seen how God has used this wonderful group of people to point me to Jesus over and over again. In Matthew 18 Jesus says, “And whoever receives one such child in my name receives me.” But, I have to say that I have been blessed because these “children” have received me and shown me a welcome and love that until now I had not experienced in ministry. Sarah Westveer The Special Needs Ministry has been such a blessing to me this past year. I have found a new family within all the wonderful staff and volunteers and have gained so much experience through the opportunities that have been presented. I find myself caught up in the many memorable events and exciting activities that are happening, and I really gain an appreciation for everyone around me. In the Seekers class, we love to actively explore God’s Word and find new and creative ways to present lessons, sing songs, and meet the needs of those around us. I love this ministry and want to continue to pour into it, giving back from all the blessings it has given me. God has really shown His hand in this ministry, and I am so thankful to be a part of it!

Judi Warner Since joining the staff on February 1, the first words that come to mind when I think about Calvary Church and its Special Needs Ministry is “Thank You.” Thank you for being a church whose many “doors” welcome all people, but especially those with disabilities. My passion in life is to proclaim that whether you have poor eye sight, cerebral palsy, autism, ADHD or a soul that can only be renewed by the precious blood of our Lord – ALL are welcome to participate in, worship with and serve one another. We all enter the Throne of Grace with the same label: “sinner,” and still God’s arms are open wide. How thankful I am He created each of us with gifts to share and when working together we are able to complete God’s picture of the Body of Christ. Some gifts may take time to discover – but they are there, waiting to be recognized and used for God’s glory. What a privilege it is to be celebrating 25 years of Special Needs Ministry with you. “Thank You, Jesus.”

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.”

face to face

Elleen Fitzgerald Listening to God and accepting where He leads is a vital part of the Special Needs Ministry and my daily walk with Him. I am continually amazed at the incredible blessings God showers on this ministry. He has used a lifetime of experiences to train me for my job here at Calvary. I see it as a privilege to be used by God to make a difference in the lives of special needs children, youth and adults. They are truly a vital part of the body of Christ and teach us so much about faith, hope and love. To God be the glory for the things he has done!

Psalm 139:13-14

Did you know ... ... that it is estimated that 7-8% or our population (in the United States) is impacted by Special Needs and the number is rising everyday!
