Fellowship bible — Adult sunday class & Family By Don matheney

The Fellowship Bible Class is truly a weekly blessing that is intended to help Christians live close to the Lord every day of the week. I have had the privilege of being part of this class since it began in September 1979. The Lord brought me to Himself in 1968 while watching a Billy Graham Crusade. Up until that night I was trusting in my own works and the rituals of a church to get me to heaven rather than resting in Christ alone. Immediately upon the Lord redeeming me, I had an intense desire to go to Bible school and/or seminary and learn more about God and teach others about Him. After patiently (and often impatiently) waiting over ten years to go to school, God miraculously paved the way for us to move to Grand Rapids and attend Grand Rapids School of Bible and Music (GRSBM) and subsequently go on to complete my doctorate. I also have had the privilege of teaching at GRSBM, Cornerstone University and the Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. How thankful we are to have followed God in what He had in mind for our lives. I would like to personally invite you to visit our Fellowship Bible class. We meet each Sunday morning at 9:40am in the Chapel. We begin the morning with singing praises to the Lord, have an interactive practical Bible study and a time of sharing prayer requests. Currently, we are discussing “What is God Like?” We are growing in Christ as we learn more about the God we love, knowing it is difficult for us to properly love and trust a God we really do not personally know. The teaching, fellowship, prayer, community outreach and the love we have for one another in Christ is an uplifting reality in our Christian lives. We’d love for you to join us.

For most of the last 200 years, Sundays | Jan. 12 to Feb. western evangelicalism has 11:15am | Room 137 championed the model of taught by Noe Palacios invitation and proclamation by religious professionals – invite the lost onto Christian turf and proclaim a message they then are asked to accept.

There is a better way. How? Multiply disciples to be the church instead of making converts to fill the church. You don’t have to be a religious professional; God has called everyone to multiply. Young adults (ages 22-34) are invited to join our Merge community this winter as they learn how to be disciple-makers wherever life happens. This class will be offered again for other adults in the future. Contact the Missions Office (missions@calvarygr.org) for more information.

Urban Family Ministries Christmas Shoppe Your donations to UFM’s Christmas Shoppe were such a blessing! Calvary gave over 2000 items for the shop including toys, games and puzzles, clothing, household items and cleaning products. The pictures tell the story; parents so happy to be able to buy new gifts for their children to open on Christmas Day. UFM is such a vital ministry in the Baxter neighborhood reaching out to the families showing them and telling them about the love of Jesus. Thank you!

continue to pray for calvary's young people Though the back to school flurry of the fall has passed, we encourage you to keep Calvary's young people in your prayers. Everyday they face the stress of maintaining good grades, negotiating peer pressure and living out their faith in the face of persecution. No matter if you're a parent or not, it's time to step up and stand in the gap for our students. Below are some ways you can pray for them this month. You can also pick up a Praying Them Through brochure at the Sanctuary Information Center for more detailed requests.

Children

Pray for God’s protection over our children at Calvary. Each week we depend on God’s wisdom as we seek to create programming that is both enriching and safe. Pray that God will continue to use Divorce Care for Kids to bring healing and encouragement to families of divorce. Pray that the children will realize that God can fill their hearts with peace during difficult times.

middle school

Pray that our Wednesday and Sunday studies would continue to help students grow closer to Jesus. Pray that our leaders would connect with students in tangible ways as they help them deal with everyday issues and develop a biblical worldview.

High school

Continue to pray for UNITED on Sunday nights. Pray for our small group leaders. Pray for our students as they begin to look at summer mission trips. Pray for our Senior High students as they commit to college, work, and the next chapter of their lives. Pray for our students to be a light both in word and deed to their friends and family.

young adults

Pray for our students as they begin a new semester of studies. Pray that they feel connected here at Calvary. Pray that our college lunches help them build godly friendships. Continue to pray for their courage to stand up for what is right and the conviction to fight sin. Pray for our

students as they look at summer mission trip and job opportunities and ask God to lead them to His will.

RESI DENT PROGRAM The pastoral residency program at Calvary Church is comprised of both men and women who are seeking to grow in their relationship with God, desiring to learn about their spiritual gifts, and looking to become leaders within the church. Pastoral residents are given numerous opportunities to come alongside various ministries at Calvary. Some of these opportunities include: meeting with Pastor Jim every week to discuss his sermon and to share life with one another, speaking in various church contexts (Sunday night service, special needs, young adults, student ministries, etc.), visiting local hospitals and jails, and working with Calvary’s facilities and maintenance team. In this issue, we wanted to share with you how our current residents came to Calvary and what they hope to see God doing during their time as part of the church staff. 12 | January 2014 | calvarygr.org

Ardo Draper: “I came to Calvary at the suggestion of a longtime Calvary Church member. He suggested that I come and interview for a position as a resident. I have been involved in jail ministry for over four years and I believe God wanted me to come to Calvary in order to learn about full-time church ministry. Through this residency, I believe God is going to open a door that will allow me to be part of a full-time jail ministry someday. Until then, I am enjoying learning from the pastors and staff and growing in my relationship with God.“

¬ Andy Crowder: “I have been a part of the Calvary staff for almost eight years, and am blessed to now have the opportunity to be a part of the resident program. As a resident, I have the opportunity to learn and serve in areas of the church that I normally wouldn’t be able to as a worship leader. My hope is that, through this program, God will grow me into a more mature, faithful and prayerful servant."

¬ Vida Wilson: “The Lord opened up a place for me here at Calvary for healing, growing in faith, and developing a

deeper love for His Church. This time is a beautiful gift from God to allow His Spirit to deepen His mercy and compassion in me, in order that I might be active in sharing it with others. I’m longing to be more sensitive to what His plans are for my life and have the willingness to obey them.”

¬ Lee Bergakker: “I grew up at Calvary Church and five years ago I returned to work in Student Ministries. The last four years I have led the 5th & 6th grade Ministry. Recently I graduated from seminary and was invited to join our residency program while continuing my work with students. My hope is that this program will help me develop skills that will strengthen my current ministry as well as provide diverse ministry

experiences that I have not had in my time working with youth.”

¬ Eric Lapata: “God led my family to Calvary through a connection at Grand Rapids Theological Seminary. When we met the pastors and staff at Calvary, we instantly knew that we would call this place our church home. Throughout my residency, I have had the opportunity to preach on Sunday nights, serve on the 5th and 6th grade mission trip, and teach in the Special Needs Ministry. I am grateful for the residency program as it is growing my prayer life and is preparing me for full-time ministry in the near future.”

start the year off right with these encouraging books found in the calvary library We all have ideas that we tell ourselves about God and how he works in our lives. Some are true--but many are false. The Good and Beautiful God is a deep, loving and transformative book that will help you discover the narratives that Jesus lived by--to know the Lord he knew--and to practice spiritual exercises that will help you grow in the knowledge of our good and beautiful God. This book works great for individual or small group use! Supplemental material is available at apprenticeofjesus.org.

We all lug loads we were never intended to carry. Fear. Worry. Discontent. No wonder we get so weary. In Traveling Light, Max Lucado uses the Twenty-third Psalm as a guide, walking us through a helpful inventory of our burdens. May God use this Psalm to remind you to release the burdens you were never meant to bear.

Good, clean jokes: great for families to share some laughter together—and get the kids reading! The laughter won’t stop with Laugh-Out-Loud Jokes for Kids. With hundreds of one-liners, knock knock jokes, and tongue twisters. And forget about chickens crossing roads. Zoolarious Animal Jokes for Kids is a veritable joke jungle for young comedians everywhere! Enjoy this collection of hundreds of family-friendly, animal-themed jokes.

The Library is located across from Fellowship Hall on the lower level. Our hours are Sunday, 9:15 - 11:15 am and Wednesday, 6:00 - 7:30 pm.

We are so glad you have joined us today. We know there are many churches you could have chosen to attend and we are glad you chose to be here. Perhaps this week you have experienced what a stormy place this world can be. At times our lives feel unpredictable and out of control. The Apostle Peter knew all about that. He knew what it was like to fail and to feel defeat and he knew what it was like to suffer. But he also knew what it was like to walk on water. This year at Calvary Church, we are studying Peter’s letters to the church. In them we see that Peter is telling us that hard times come and that life isn’t always easy, but that God is a refuge for each one of us. While you are here we hope you will experience the grace and peace that can come from Jesus Christ — the same Jesus who helped Peter defy nature on the Sea of Galilee. Jim Samra Senior Pastor

In community you will be loved; you will be valued; you will be transformed more into Christ’s image. If you realize it is time to engage with people in a new way and want to be a part of a community group, visit the Connection Point on Sunday mornings or contact Brenda Neher (community@ calvarygr.org).
