dear graduates advice for those graduating from high school this spring Throughout the pages of this month’s Calvary Life, you’ll find words of wisdom passed on to our graduating seniors. We sought advice from pastors, deacons, high school ministry leaders and others who have been there and want to share what God has shown them. We hope you are touched by His grace as your read each remark.
My advice to high school graduates is to engage in a genuine way with God. We only come to know God as we experience him in our lives. College is one of the great times in life for discovering the reality of God and seeing his power at work in your lives. You will make many new friends and have many new experiences going forward from this point— but above all these is the joy of developing a friendship with God and experiencing him. Trust in the Lord in everything. Find a good church to be a part of, and get involved in the community. Do not sweat the small stuff, and always try your best! Work hard, and do not get discouraged if you do not get all A’s. Go to school now! Do not wait! It is much harder to try and go to school when you have a family and financial responsibilities! Finally, do what you love, and do what you enjoy doing!

You will come to meet people with completely different backgrounds (faith, life beliefs, family, etc...), and they may view things entirely different than you. Remain grounded in your faith - always seeking out the truth. “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness” (Colossians 2:7). College is the time to truly own your faith and grow deeper. Also, don’t forget to establish community early on, making sound friendships and establishing relationships with Christians whom you can experience college with. Remember your family and those who have poured into you these past few years. Don’t be scared to ask for prayer or to call if you are struggling!

Whether you go to a Christian or secular college, don’t let your knowledge about God stop you from seeking to know Him daily. Set aside regular time for prayer and devotion; get involved in growing with other Christians through the local church, campus clubs and interpersonal relationships; and pay special attention to the ways God is working in your daily life both through trials and victories. Produce for Calvary’s Food Pantry As you plant your garden this summer, please consider adding an extra row of vegetables to donate to our food pantry. We do not receive fresh fruits and vegetables all the time, and this would be an added blessing to the many families who rely on the pantry.
Young Adults Scholarship Fund Every year the young adult ministry provides opportunities including retreats, conferences, book clubs, and times of service to cultivate and encourage spiritual growth. Sadly, financial hardships can make it difficult for some of our young adults to take full advantage of these

What is your role at Calvary Church? How has God recently revealed I am the pastor to high school students. Himself in your community? How have you experienced life{together}? Over the past three years I have been building relationships with a group of brothers in Christ. At first it started off as just basic Bible study, but now it has developed into so much more. Now this group of men consists of my closest allies in the kingdom, and we are all growing, evangelizing and making disciples. I love you guys (you know who you are)!

The Mercy For series by Nancy Alcorn addresses the life-controlling issues that threaten thousands of young women every day such as eating disorders and addictions. The four books in the series include Cut, Starved, Violated and Trapped. They provide practical advice and scriptural insight. These books are also great resources for counselors, leaders, parents, pastors and individuals who care and want to equip themselves to provide answers. Scott MacIntyre was a piano prodigy, a nineteen-year-old college grad, a Marshall scholar and an American Idol finalist. Blind from birth, Scott has had to work harder and longer to achieve his goals. At nineteen, he faced a diagnosis that rocked his family and nearly took his life. Peek behind the scenes to see how he learned to overcome his disability, how he made it in the music industry, how he found the love of his life, and how God taught him that in all things, we can truly achieve our dreams By Faith, Not by Sight. Everyone knows how to be joyful in the peaks of Life when all your fondest hopes and wildest dreams come true. But, what about the valleys? When nothing seems to go your way? When everything is falling apart? When God is silent, and you feel all alone? Where does joy fit into those moments? In Choose Joy, Kay Warren shares the path to experiencing soul-satisfying joy no matter what you’re going through. Joy is deeper than happiness, lasts longer than excitement, and is more satisfying than pleasure and thrills. Joy comes from God…and it can be yours! Today.

The Barbarian Way talks about living our faith radically through our love and sacrifice. Following Jesus’ great example, we should seek to expand the kingdom of God even though sometimes it might be risky. The call of Jesus is one that demands action, and this book calls Christians to step out of their comfort zones and live in the “barbarian way.” The Church of Irresistible Influence is one of the best books I have ever read dealing with the impact a large church can have on its community for Christ. It challenges the idea of doing multiple small community projects and argues that large churches have a distinct opportunity to do fewer yet much larger service projects when they leverage their great number of people and resources. Lewis argues that as we use people’s giftedness, service projects that make an imprint on the community at large will reap long lasting benefits for the kingdom. It’s exciting to imagine how God could use Calvary with a model like this. I recommend Kevin DeYoung and Ted Kluck’s book, Why We Love The Church. One of the biggest fears of anyone graduating high school is what will happen to their faith throughout their college career. This book does a great job at defining what the church is supposed to do and why it is so beneficial. It is an easy read and would benefit anyone who has ever been tempted to leave the church or their faith.

A meddling mom & 10 young adults experience the joy of community by Sue Gardner
T
his year, as Pastor Jim challenged the congregation to become part of a small group, my college-aged children have felt it! They asked me to give Calvary a call to see if any other young people were similarly challenged and wanted to be in a small group. I was excited to see their interest and, being the meddling mom that I am, I called the church office. I got in touch with Karen and asked if there was a group for young people between the ages of 18 and 25. Karen suggested my kids try Merge, a community for young adults (22-34) meeting on Sunday mornings. I told my sons and they were a bit disappointed as this did not fit their schedule.

I think it was the second time we met that God laid on my heart to share with them, between my tears, how much I longed for them to seek a close walk with the Lord and surrender their all. We shared a meal each time we met and then studied Francis Chan’s “Crazy Love” series. Scott and I listened to each of them share about their struggles and desires to walk with God and they asked questions like: “What does it mean to be lukewarm?” and “How can we know God will answer our prayers?” I am not sure who has been blessed more, Scott and I as the leaders, or the young adults.
“Meeting with this small group has definitely shown me the importance of being a part of a small community. Sue and Scott have been awesome in leading us in the Crazy Love series in which I have learned it’s not only important to say I'm a Christian, but also to have the actions that prove I'm a Christian. I have learned through Scott's testimony that God can deliver us from whatever sin is in our lives and He will empower us to do great things through our story. The Crazy Love series has allowed me to examine myself and start working on things that are holding me back from truly receiving all of God’s blessings. Thanks so much for opening your home to us and extending your wisdom of all the things you have learned throughout your Christian walk.”

“As a college student away from my family and home in Canada, small group has played a supportive role over the past few months for me. Behind the Scenes Serving at Calvary with Liz Cain
Where do you currently serve at Calvary?

I serve at Calvary as a small group leader for freshmen girls in the high school ministry, UNITED. This mainly involves serving during our Sunday evening time of worship, teaching, prayer and discussion. Throughout the week though, I continue to build relationships with the students through email, phone calls, Facebook or participating in various outings in the community. Most recently I enjoyed serving alongside several high school students for the Habitat for Humanity project where we assembled benches for a new home.
How did you begin serving at Calvary?
I have been attending Calvary Church for the past 4 ½ years, and over that time I have had a desire to get connected and serve in the Calvary community. Growing up, I attended a small Baptist church where I was actively involved in the high school ministry. As a teenager I remember how much it meant to me to have youth leaders actively pouring into my life and encouraging me to be bold in my faith. Last summer when I became a member of Calvary I felt led to work with the high school ministry by volunteering as a small group leader. And I am so glad that I did!
What challenges have you encountered in your ministry?
One of the biggest challenges that the students and leaders have faced this year in the high school ministry was getting news that Jordan and Toran were no longer going to be at Calvary. Just like with any other transition, change is hard. However, as the students and leaders began to pray and ask God for wisdom and discernment about what would happen next in UNITED, we all sensed that God was going to be doing a BIG WORK in the ministry. As we continued to seek God’s will, we were blessed by the creative gifting of Aaron Bolduc who began serving as an interim pastor for UNITED. Aaron’s passion for serving others and sharing the gospel boldly has already had an impact on so many within the high school ministry. Even through a time of transition, God has been at work in the lives of students and leaders in this community.
How has God blessed you through serving?

I am a witness to God’s love every time I interact with children or serve alongside other volunteers - an opportunity I happily welcome and cherish. On June 1, 2010, I was diagnosed with Stage II non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Not only did this news stun my family, but for the first time, I was forced to lean upon my Calvary friends in a whole new way. During my treatment and recovery I was on the receiving end of enormous generosity. My family and I received cards and prayers and most of all, more meals than I thought possible! Our refrigerator and freezer were constantly full. Today, it has been 1½ years since my “all clear” report, and I am feeling great! My experiences serving in this ministry have all been tremendous blessings. I look forward to continuing my service and helping wherever God leads me!
“Each one should use whatever gift he has received to serve others, faithfully administering God’s grace in its various forms” (1 Peter 4:10). Every Sunday and throughout the week, hundreds of people – of diverse interest, background and talents – devote a little bit of themselves to serving in a ministry at Calvary Church. They give a little time or a lot, whatever they can afford. It’s no over-statement to say that they are building up the body of Christ “to the praise of His glory.” Our team members serve in the library, clean the Sanctuary, teach a class, rock a baby, greet people, help staff with special events, sing in the choir and many other things. Glocal Impact Days: Response to April 28 The following email expresses the impact we were hoping our service day with Habitat for Humanity would have on those that participated with us…
All three of our kids ‘got it’ and said some variation of the fact that serving the Lord by helping people was a lot of fun! They didn’t want to leave.
“We did not know what to expect on Saturday. Two of our daughters were not sure they wanted to miss tball and soccer to work all day, and we wondered how in the world 500 people were going to build a house (inside a warehouse!?) without getting in each other’s way and making a mess of things?
Thank you for giving us the opportunity to serve in that way. It was a wonderful day!”
We came home Saturday evening tired, blistered and joyful! What a great experience! ... From breakfast to the creative crafts for kids..the organized work stations... clear instructions...smiling leaders who directed us calmly and seemingly without stress...the delicious lunches...a safe and fun work environment...and the emphasis to demonstrate love for God by loving others. It was amazing.

Short-Term Missions: Ukraine team Please keep the Ukraine missions team in your prayers as they will be ministering with Amy Richey in Ukraine, June 8-18. The team will be ministering at an orphanage in the small city of Vorzel which is about an hour and a half from Kiev, the capital of Ukraine. At the orphanage they will be working with the staff, teaching them some skills to help them teach the 200+ special needs children who live there, and spending time playing with the children and showing them the love of Jesus. They also will be doing some construction work at the orphanage. The second part of the trip will be in Kiev, partnering with the local Salvation Army in handing out information on human trafficking at the European Soccer Championships – the Euro Cup. Human trafficking is a growing business in the world and affects hundreds of thousands of victims forced into the sex trade. Pray for team unity, safety, smooth logistics and that they would show the heart of Jesus to those they interact with.

God is blessing Calvary Church in many exciting ways. Here are some recent examples of God’s goodness. Calvary Community – Lee Content, Calvary Community Pastoral Staff What a privilege to be part of the work God is doing in community building at Calvary Church. Since Pastor Jim began the sermon series in Ephesians last fall, we have seen more than 600 new people join a smaller community! We praise God for this and continue to press on toward the goal of having everyone who attends Calvary involved in a small group. Currently, we have about 950 people involved in an Adult Sunday Class, 200 people attending Monday Night Bible study, and 700 people who are involved in a community group! While we are amazed and pleased with the increasing number of people in community, this still means that a large portion of our attendees are only attending the Sunday morning worship service. As a result, we will continue to diligently work at getting people involved in a smaller group. We do this not so that we can have impressive numbers, but because we truly believe that one of the best ways to experience God’s love is in the context of community. Calvary’s Budget Process – Randy Helm, Operations Director Calvary’s budget year begins in August, but the process of setting the yearly budget starts in January with a review of direct costs that include utilities (gas, water, electric and sewer) and personnel (salaries and benefits). These costs tend to be fixed and are looked at first to determine how changes will impact other areas. Next, we look at the needs of each ministry area, which include a review of the current or soon-to-be finished program year, the goals and objectives that have been set by the elders or pastoral staff, and any recommendations from the Senior Pastor, leaving room for additional input after he returns from his study break with what God has led him to do in the next year. Steve Gibson, our Executive Pastor, and I take all this into account as we work with each department to understand their ministry needs and set a target budget accordingly. Each ministry area is given a target budget, usually in March, and is asked to spend time in prayer as they review it with their staff and respective committees while working out their plans for the coming year. Their final budgetary plans are brought to a meeting with the Finance Committee, usually in May. Once every department has presented its ministry and budget plans, the Finance Committee spends time in individual prayer and corporate prayer about the budget and then ultimately makes a recommendation to the Deacon board, submitting a
final budget for approval. The Deacons, in turn, pray about the recommendations for the coming year and if all goes well, accepts this budget for approval and recommends it to the Elders for final approval. There are many people involved in the budget process every year, each one with the goal of using the gifts God gives us as a church for His ultimate glory. Please remember every level of this process in your prayers that God would grant us wisdom and that we would allow Him to work in and through all that we do. Aaron Bolduc, High School Pastoral Staff The elders interviewed Aaron and Emily Bolduc at our May meeting and are pleased to present Aaron as our new High School Pastor. Aaron and Emily shared their faith journeys that have brought them to this point. The elders, deacons, pastoral staff, parents, student ministry volunteers and the students have all recognized the fingerprints of God in choosing Aaron and Emily for this important ministry. Please pray that God will continue to bless our student ministry, that many would come to faith in Christ, and that our students would grow deep in their faith. Translation Advisory Committee – John Zimmerman Calvary Church has been using the NIV/1984 as its translation of choice for a number of years. Zondervan no longer prints the 1984 version, and has moved entirely to their 2011 version. Since we can no longer purchase the older version, Zondervan’s decision is, in practice, forcing a change in translations for the church as well. This prompts the Elders to ask for a study to see whether the church should stay with the NIV, or if this occasion should prompt us to move to a different version altogether. The elders have asked John Zimmerman to lead a Translation Advisory Committee. This committee is charged with reviewing a number of competing translation candidates, considering the relative strengths and weaknesses of each translation, and the respective publishers’ strategies, costs, availability of helps, and other factors as may be defined by the committee. Upon completing this work, the committee will make a recommendation for action to the elders. The committee will begin work in July and plans to complete its work by March 2013. Please pray for wisdom as they seek God’s direction for this important decision. Anointing Prayer James 5:13-15 teaches, “Is any one of you in trouble? He should pray. Is anyone happy? A Truly remarkable biding time on a wednesday night love story By Katelin Kimble
Just as it is important for us to be a part of a community that is stimulating, encouraging, supportive, and challenging, so it is with the Go-getter special needs adult class. The Go-Getters are a community composed of unique and treasured image bearers of Christ. The class environment encourages the development of lifelong friendships among its members who are wrestling with similar concerns: such as friendship woes, family concerns, and personal struggles. Relationships are never easy but many Go-Getters desire to pursue the benefits of a dating relationship. There are several couples who have cultivated a meaningful dating relationship over the years. We had the opportunity to catch up with one of those couples — Sylvia Jabaay and Joel DeJong. Sylvia and Joel met in their mid-twenties at a private school in Chicago. Then they both moved back to Grand Rapids where they attended Southeast Center, an educational facility, and connected again. They reside in separate group homes, Joel a resident of David’s House and Sylvia living at Villa East. During the week they both have job related responsibilities. Joel works at the Savory Food Company and Sylvia helps perform small cleaning tasks within her group home. Sylvia and Joel attribute the longevity of their relationship to a solid friendship and a close relationship with the Creator of the Universe. When given the opportunity to reflect upon their relationship, various things came to mind. First of all Joel said that, “Sylvia was always the only girl for him!” She is also a great dancer and every year they have the privilege of getting dressed up and attending the special needs dance at Ottawa Hills High school. Sylvia also loves Joel because she is given the opportunity to be his “Basketball Buddy” which allows her to attend his games. This couple also looks forward to lunch and movie dates. The Lord has created within each one of us the desire for community and this is not unlike the needs of the Go-Getters. They are loved; they belong and desire acceptance. And overall, they desire community too.

In 1Corinthians 16:13 Paul writes for us to be on your guard... [to] stand firm in the faith; be men of courage; be strong. Do everything in love. Volunteer, Katelin Kimble has latched onto these words as she responded to the call from God to serve in the special needs ministry. While spending Wednesday evening listening to the orchestra practice, doing homework, and waiting for her brother to be done at WOW, Katelin pondered what else God would have her do on Wednesday evenings at church. Being a nursing student at GVSU, and attending the college class at Calvary failed to quell the growing expectation in her heart to serve. On one such Wednesday evening, she ran into Marv Snedeker. After revisiting the days that he was her middle school leader and the great fun they had, Marv suggested that she come and visit the Go-Getters class. She did and by week two, as Katelin says, she was totally hooked! Katelin immediately gravitated toward a student that many hesitated to be around. She cared for him and showed him unconditional love. Joy began to show in his face each time he saw her. He became much more involved in the class, directing singing and praying for the group. His attendance increased and it is very rare for him to miss a Sunday and Wednesday class, each time walking from the stop at Leonard and Leffingwell to the church. As Katelin and I sat and talked, she reflected on the blessings and challenges of serving in the special needs ministry. The total honesty during prayer and share, remembering your name, acceptance of who you are, the genuine love they have for one another was far different from what she had experienced in other ministries. Katelin says, Go-Getters are just “frank” about life. She feels that it is a “privilege” to be with the students and that she is blessed by them more than she could have ever imagined. The students are very aware if you miss even a single week, stated Katelin. Amazed by the lengthy relationships amongst several of the students, Katelin was drawn to investigate two of these relationships. One of these was so moving that Katelin wanted to share it with the congregation. The couple you read about at left has been on an amazing journey that began many years ago. Although committed, they have never been able to marry or be together on a daily basis, but the love they have for one another bursts from them as Katelin did her interview.

Festival of Lights We need your help to make this year Festival of Lights work. Now is the “prep work” time - 120,000 lights need to be tested and counted. No special skills are necessary just the ability to plug in a string of lights and see if it works. I know you just did. But, your parents have been through a lot of the issues you will face. Listen to them. They can help you avoid making the same mistakes. They love you and want to support you. And most times, they will be the one you cry on if things do go bad. I am sure there is a lot more advice you will get during this time. Enjoy every moment of it; enjoy the endless possibilities. This time will be over in a blink of an eye, so don’t waste any of it. Most important, look to God for everything; pray constantly, He is the one that will get you through. Sundays at Calvary Connection Point
Our Connection Point is a place where you can receive a warm welcome, whether this is your first time at Calvary or your sixteenth, The Connection Point is your place for information on connecting at Calvary Church. It is located in the Chapel wing of the building, on your right as you exit the Sanctuary, in room 215a.
Calvary Café
9:00am-11:15am in the Gym The Calvary Café is designed to give you the opportunity to mingle with other attendees between services. Stop in for a cup of coffee and a donut. From discussing the morning’s sermon to catching up on your community group leader’s recent vacation, the Calvary Café is a great place to gather for conversation.
Adult Sunday Classes
