What is your role at Calvary Church?

5Questions with Andy Crowder Assistant Worship Leader and Pastoral Resident

Currently, I serve in both the Worship Ministry as Assistant Worship Leader and as a Pastoral Resident. In the Worship Ministry, my main role is coordinating and leading the praise team as well as leading worship on Sundays. As a part of the Pastoral Residency program I have the opportunity to learn from and engage with other areas of the church.

2

What encourages you most as you minister at Calvary?

This will sound very broad, but I am always encouraged just by being here at Calvary. Whether it is on a Sunday, being surrounded by such a body of believers desiring to worship and hear from God, or during the week when I am able to minister alongside of the staff, I am encouraged by how God is moving and at work here. With a more narrow focus, the level of commitment that we see from our worship volunteers is such an incredible blessing. The people in our praise band, orchestra and choir give up a great amount of time and it’s all to bring glory to God. It truly is a privilege to be a part of what is going on here at Calvary.

3

How has God recently revealed Himself in your life?

God revealed Himself to me quite recently. I had been working through Psalm 33 when I received a troubling phone call that left me terribly frightened for what might happen. That whole morning was a blur of panicking in my office, calling my wife on the verge of tears and running to Pastor Jim and Pastor Tom in need of advice and prayer. Little did I know, as Pastor Jim kindly pointed out to me, that God had already given me His words of comfort through Psalm 33. In my time of panic and worry, God spoke through the Psalm, “The LORD foils the plans of the nations; he thwarts the purposes of the peoples. But the plans of the LORD stand firm forever, the purposes of his heart through all generations... the eyes of the LORD are on those who fear him, on those whose hope is in his unfailing love, to deliver

4 | June/July 2013 | calvarygr.org

them from death and keep them alive in famine. We wait in hope for the LORD; he is our help and our shield. In him our hearts rejoice, for we trust in his holy name.”

4

How have you experienced life{together}?

Over this past year I have had the opportunity to be a part of Calvary’s Leadership Development Forum. It’s been a lot of fun to be able to meet and interact with such a great group of men and be able to walk through aspects of life together. In LDF, we are also broken up into smaller groups and I have been incredibly blessed by this group. From the group leaders to the other members, it is a comfort to know that there are godly people who are praying for you and earnestly seeking to grow together as believers.

5

How can the Calvary family pray for you and your ministry this month?

My wife Katie and I are always appreciative of prayer! Currently we have been praying about moving closer to Grand Rapids or staying where we are. We are currently located in Zeeland and the commute gets very burdensome (especially in the winter!) Calvary can pray for us as we seek guidance from God as to when and where we should move and also that we will continue to trust in His plan and lean on Him throughout the process. For our ministry, please pray that God will continue to lift up volunteers to be a part of the worship ministry. As we enter into the summer months, pray for us as we transition into longer service times and work through how to use that time in a way that is honoring to the Lord. Please pray for us each week as we start fresh with another Sunday and a new message to work with. Most of all, please pray that as we serve that we can do so with hearts that are focused on God and focused on glorifying Him with our lives.

But, when thirteenyear-old Taylor’s life was cut short in a skiing accident, they were asked a question no parent ever thinks they will hear: “Would you be willing to donate Taylor’s organs?” Their answer would save the lives of five desperate people and give them a future. Taylor’s Gift is a story of finding strength in God and creating good even in the darkest times.

Born without arms or legs, Nick Vujicic overcame his disabilities to have an independent, rich, fulfilling, and “ridiculously good” life. In Life Without Limits, Nick tells the story of the emotional battle he endured while learning to deal with his physical disabilities. “For the longest, loneliest time, I wondered if there was anyone on earth like me, and whether there was any purpose to my life other than pain and humiliation. Nick shares how his faith in God has been his major source of strength, and once he found a sense of purpose – inspiring others as a motivational speaker to better their lives and their world – he found the confidence to build a rewarding and productive life without limits.

At the height of racial strife in Birmingham, Alabama, during the turbulent 1960s, trailblazer Civil Rights attorney, Arthur Davis Shores had the gall to believe African Americans deserved equal rights in the South. Due to his work toward making this dream a reality, Shores, his wife, and their two young daughters endured repeated attacks by the Ku Klux Klan. In The Gentle Giant of Dynamite Hill, Shores’ daughters, Judge Helen Shores Lee and Barbara Sylvia Shores, tell their story about what it was like growing up in the fear of the next attack and witnessing firsthand how their father fought on through it all because of his passion and faith in a God who sees all men as equal.

The Godly Home seeks to help Christians understand God’s plan for families. From courtship, to the roles of godly husbands and wives, as well as the respect children should have for their parents - this book covers any questions that may arise in seeking the characteristics of a godly family. Though it was written over 200 years ago, it is incredibly relavant to those seeking to enrich families today. I believe all the areas mentioned in The Godly Home are instrumental in moving the Kingdom forward, and more so bringing glory to God, and thus highly recommend it. Unbroken: A World War II Story of Survival, Resilience, and Redemption, by Laura Hillenbrand, chronicles Louie Zamperini’s life. Louie was a former Olympic champion who was shot down by the Japanese in WW II. He survived under unbearable conditions and after a bout of alcoholism and post-traumatic stress, he reluctantly came to know Christ. Now, his story of grace has landed in the hands of lots of unbelievers. His story of redemption is one of the best that I’ve ever read!

All the books mentioned are available in Calvary's Library. The Library is located across from Fellowship Hall on the lower level. Hours are Sunday, 9:15 – 11:15am. June/July 2013 | calvarygr.org | 5

life{together} experiencing community at calvary

Cooperation builds community Nothing Builds Bonds Quite Like Serving Together by Shanda Heilman Our community group recently had the privilege of helping with the food drive last month. I thought, “It’ll be easy—I unload trucks for a living! We should be finished in a couple of hours and still have time to meet up to pray and do our sermon discussion questions!” Although the work was hard and took most of the day—even then, we didn’t finish it all—I had a lot of fun working and spending time with my small group that afternoon! We began at the Yellow House unloading the first two trucks; then drove to our Community Pantry partner church, Plainfield United Methodist, to unload the third truck. I enjoyed our getting-to-know-you-type conversation in the car on the way there and back. We shared our testimonies of salvation and commented on things like our favorite season of the year and what our middle name is. (Don’t worry, Joe, I won’t tell everyone yours!) When we got back to the Yellow House, I saw how organized everything was and even wondered if they needed me anymore. Some people were stocking the pantry shelves, while others were still sorting food and other household items from the bags. A few of the guys were bringing crates of sorted food downstairs where others stocked shelves for future use. It really felt like we were the “body of Christ.” Each person had a job to do and did it happily. Cooperation all the way! And, yes, I fit right in, helping to empty and sort the rest of the donations when we returned. It was a joy to serve at the food drive. I had heard that for some, the term “food drive” means, “It’s time to clean out the cupboards,” but with each bag that I moved, emptied, and sorted, that’s not what I observed at all. It looked to me like every donation was purchased new and packaged with love and care. I was amazed by the generosity of our church family here at Calvary!

Living in a culture where everything is fast and conveniently at our fingertips, we don’t have to wait very long to satisfy our cravings. This summer we want to examine our “McCulture” through the lens of Scripture, and explore the subjects of friendship, the internet, social media, family, self-indulgence and consumerism. MOZAMBIQUE MARKET Would you be willing to “lend a hand” to the women of Chinhangane, Mozambique? On Sunday, June 9, items made by the women of Chinhangane will be available for purchase outside the Calvary Cafe. If you purchase an item, you will be asked to sign the “helping hands” quilt, as a sign that you are supporting them in raising the $30,000 needed to purchase a truck to bring their crops to market. When the project is complete, the quilt will be given to the women in the village as a reminder of the love and support of the people of Calvary Church.

Recovering in Mozambique: Physical flooding and spiritual warfare from Pastor Bruce Calvary has been sending teams of short-term workers to our adopted village of Chinhangane, Mozambique since 2006. We have been blessed to support local Christians making a positive impact in the village in the areas of health education, agriculture and spiritual development. In January of this year, heavy rains caused devastating flooding of homes, offices and schools along with significant crop loss for the second year in a row. Our recently-returned Calvary team asks for continuing prayer for those in the village. In the wake of this disaster, Satan has taken the opportunity to erect obstacles to the Gospel. One of our village friends told our team that he had been asked to give money to the witch doctor to find out who cursed the weather. He asked the people to come back since he didn’t 8 | June/July 2013 | calvarygr.org

have money with him. That same day, our team was teaching on what Jesus thinks of us and what Satan thinks of us. When the team heard that this offering was being collected for the witch doctor, they confronted the evil and fear the witch doctor was promoting. “God did not give us a spirit of fear but of power, love and a sound mind.” Some of the villagers were embarrassed, but said after the teaching that they would not give to such an offering. This is just one example of the issues we face in Mozambique, and it demonstrates why prayer support is so needed for these people. Won’t you consider joining the Mozambique Prayer Team that meets the first Sunday of each month in Room 110? While the challenges of ministry are great in Chinhangane, our team did have several wonderful encouragements on the most recent trip:

• Numerous young men are in love with God’s Word and are being discipled by a woman who we helped get training at a Bible school. • The fields are full of life as they continue to recover from the floods. Lord willing, they will see a bountiful harvest in two months. • Children are receiving Godly instruction several times each week and God continues to use our supported workers, Sybil Baloyi and the Mnisi’s. • We were able to see the flood damage in Sybil’s school, Lucky & Sonnet’s house, and the World Relief office. We praise God that we as a church were able to help with their recovery costs. Join with us to pray for God to work and to raise up a church planter for the village.

GLOBAL IMPACT This year our school supplies project will not only be an outreach to our local community, but will also benefit Morningstar Preschool as it recovers from flooding in Mozambique.

a note from the elders What We Teach

In a lost world where “the search for truth” seems relative and temporal we want Calvary’s grasp of timeless Biblical truth to be accurate and strong. With that in mind, for the past four years the elders and a committee have been reviewing Calvary’s doctrinal statement and revising our teaching curriculum. A guide called What We Teach will be made available to you in the first weeks of June. It is designed to be used by individuals, small groups and classes at Calvary to help us strengthen, clarify and teach the fundamentals of our faith. Copies of this 32-page booklet will be available at the information desk in the back of the sanctuary or by contacting the church office. As you study it, may you become what is referred to in 1 Timothy 4:6 as “…a good minister of Christ Jesus, nourished on the truths of the faith and of the good teaching that you have followed.” Please email any questions or suggestions to curriculum@calvarygr.org.

At the elders’ request Pastor Jim takes a study break every year to pray, learn, and seek God’s will for Calvary Church. For most of the month of April, Jim was provided with quiet office space at a seminary in Florida. He dedicated himself to prayer, fasting, reading, writing, and asking God to speak to him. The outcomes of that time away include the study of over a dozen books, writing for a commentary on 1 Peter, an extensive research paper, and clarity from the Lord as a result of many hours spent digging into scripture. The elders received Jim’s report with enthusiasm! We are excited about how God has gifted our senior pastor and is using him to shepherd the Calvary flock. You will soon see the results of the study break as well, because during this time away God graciously guides Jim through a mapping of the weekly sermon schedule for the entire coming year. This summer we will continue to learn about the life of David, with a focus on Psalms. Next fall we will begin a series on 1 Peter. The elders encourage you to join us in studying these books of the Bible. As you meditate on them, ask God to prepare us all to hear and apply His word.

The Lord is leading the deacons to intensify Calvary’s focus on orphans and the fatherless. Short-term mission trips will be leaving soon for various parts of the world. Small groups are serving together in Grand Rapids and beyond. Please pray with us that God will continue to lead Calvary Church in effective use of the time, talents and treasure with which He has entrusted us. May He receive the glory as we reach out to our neighbors in Grand Rapids and around the world.

Special Needs Ministry

Volunteer Gala

Last month Calvary staff hosted a gala to thank hundreds of church volunteers. The elders would like to add our voices of gratitude to each of you who commit your time to areas of ministry at Calvary Church. Your reward is in heaven, but your service here on earth is not unnoticed! Thank you for serving the Lord by ministering to others.

New Members

One of the great joys of serving at Calvary is being able to see how God is using this church to change lives. Every month it is our privilege to welcome new members to Calvary and to rejoice in their stories of God’s grace and saving power. We encourage our new members to become involved, to participate in small groups and adult congregations and to learn their spiritual gifts and put them to use. If you are a long-time member of Calvary Church, we encourage you to look around and welcome new faces. Invite new friends to worship and serve with you, and help them find community in this place. If you are not yet a member, pray about whether or not God is calling you to become part of this body and contact Karen VanHolstyn at kvanholstyn@ calvarygr.org to find out about membership classes.

Moms & Caregivers Brunch By Pam Cook

But you are a chosen people, a royal priesthood , a holy nation, a people belonging to God, that you may declare the praises of him who called you out of darkness into his wonderful light. I Peter 2:9 On April 13, approximately 40 moms and caregivers enjoyed a great time together at our annual Mom’s Brunch. A delicious brunch was served followed by an inspirational talk from Kathy Zimmerman based on our theme verse: I Peter 2:9. The last two hours of the morning, everyone enjoyed the hands-on experience of making jewelry from vintage buttons and scarves out of tee shirts. It was a wonderful way to have fun and to get to know one another. It was truly a special morning of refreshment and fellowship. Plans are already being made for next year’s event. Thanks to our wonderful staff and volunteers for making this event so special.

Prayer Room

Remember that you are invited to pray with the elders on the first Tuesday of the month at 6:15pm in room 121 (next to the chapel). We have experienced some powerful prayer sessions. God often chooses to respond by healing people of spiritual, physical, emotional, and/ or relational problems. You are welcome to pray with us or to request that the elders lay hands on you, anoint your forehead with a small dab of oil and pray over you as instructed in James 5. This is not some weird ritual; it is a beautiful reminder that almighty God is active, loving, and ready to respond to obedience. Respectfully Submitted by Kent Snoeyink, Elder Clerk

There are many things in life that are like puzzles. We may have all the pieces but aren’t sure how they fit together. In Jr. High, I knew many things about the Bible, but was a bit fuzzy with the big picture. This Summer, 7th and 8th grade guys are welcome to join us as we play dodgeball, get to know each other and have a blast digging deep in to what the big picture of God’s word is all about.

For this summer’s Women’s Bible Study, we will use Jacalyn Eyre’s, The Fruit of the Spirit: Faithfulness. We will learn from Scripture about faithful friendships and the incredible blessings that result. Most importantly, we will constantly be reminded of God’s great faithfulness to us (Lamentations 3:22-23), demonstrated by His absolute goodness, infinite wisdom, and unfailing love. Register online at MyCalvaryGR.org or contact Women’s Ministry at ext. 5186 by July 1. Sorry, no childcare is available. Our study will be facilitated by Ruthie Krause.

Church Directory Portraits Begin 5th/6th Mission Trip to Downtown Grand Rapids

There’s so much going on at Calvary, we can’t fit it all on this calendar! We’ve only listed a few events for each day so be sure to refer to the web calendar at calvarygr.org or the back of the Sunday bulletin for all our recurring weekly activities.

Welcome to calvary church We are so glad you have joined us today. We know there are many churches you could have chosen to attend and we are glad you chose to be here. We believe that you are not here by accident, that God has brought you to this place for a specific purpose. We look forward to connecting with you and caring for you in any way that we can. This is a big church, we know... but you’d be surprised at how quickly you can find your place. All over this page are ways to meet people and get involved at Calvary. You will find there really is something for everyone! Jim Samra Senior Pastor

Community is a place where you belong; a place where you develop relationships with other Christians and do life together. When you experience true community, you have close friends who meet together, pray together, grow together in God’s Word, and care for one another. In community you will be loved; you will be valued; you will be transformed more into Christ’s image. If you realize it is time to engage with people in a new way and want to be a part of a community group, visit the Connection Point on Sunday mornings or contact Brenda Neher (community@calvarygr.org).
