Locking Down & Staying Safe A perimeter lock down prohibits an unauthorized person from entering the building. All exterior doors are locked and the key entrances are monitored by the Emergency Response Team (ERT). This procedure allows the occupants of the church to continue as normal, but separates outside activity. A perimeter lock down is most commonly used when an incident is occurring outside the building and you want to prevent it from coming in. Any person who observes some kind of threat happening outside the facility should contact the Emergency Response Team by help phone (located around the building and in many classrooms). The ERT leader will decide if a perimeter lockdown is needed to protect the church occupants. If a perimeter lockdown is activated, Facility staff and ERT will lock all exterior doors and place yellow locked signs against glass. Only screened individuals or emergency personnel will be allowed into the facility. Those wishing to leave need to understand the possible danger and may need to use an alternative exit. Only the police can hold someone against his or her will. Facility staff will call the police and inform them of the situation. If the situation escalates and moves toward or into the facility, an interior lock down procedure will be activated. Once the threat has been eliminated and emergency personnel have given the all clear, the ERT will reopen the facility as needed for daily activities.

Along similar lines, if the threat of an explosive device in or around the facility is made known, the site emergency team will be activated to determine the course of action. If you suspect an explosive device is on premises, report it to the ERT in person. Avoid using the help phones as they operate on radio frequencies. Remember that Calvary’s Facility Staff and Emergency Response Team are trained and on site to keep you safe, no matter the threat. June/July 2014 | calvarygr.org | 3
life{together} experiencing community at calvary
Over 200 more people are experiencing god’s love in community! By lee content
pastoral staff, calvary community
In the 2013/14 ministry year, we have seen another 200 people take the step to join a Community Group. At the Fall Launch, 150 people joined new groups and at the Spring Launch, 61 people gathered together to start new groups! In between these two events, approximately 30 other people began doing life together by either joining an existing group or starting a new one. And this does not even take into account all the people who have participated in Adult Sunday classes, Monday Night Bible Study and various men’s, women’s and senior’s groups this past year!
Looking to get engaged in a community that consists of folks from all ages and stages of life? Look no further... • Contact the Office: If you would like to join a Community Group, contact us at community@calvarygr.org or 956-9377, ext. 5650, and we’ll connect you with a group. • Connection Point: Visit the Connection Point after one of the Sunday morning services to talk to someone about joining one of our Community Groups.

Beyond the numbers lies a more exciting reality—people experiencing God’s love because of authentic Christcentered community. We are thrilled to be part of what God is doing through community here at Calvary Church. As people commit to meet together regularly, study the Bible, pray and care for one another, God shows up in miraculous ways. Praise God that He pursues not only for the purpose of salvation, but for the purpose of being part of the body of Christ! And yet, there are still many people at Calvary looking for a way to belong. If you are one of these people, please take the next step and get involved in community! We’ve just launched six brand new groups and currently, we have several groups who would like more people to join them. If you are already in community, would you please commit to pray for people who are longing to be a part, but aren’t sure where they fit or how to go about it? May God continue to multiply our groups and make his presence known in the lives of His people!

Do our prayers really make a difference? Have you ever wished for more rock-solid proof that they do? We all have personal examples in our own lives, but at this point in history, in the number of Muslims coming to faith in Christ, we have an undeniable, up-to-the-minute, worldwide answer that God moves mightily in response to the prayers of his people. Let’s define a movement of Muslims to Christ to be at least 100 new church starts or 1,000 baptisms, occurring within a single-culture people group, within 20 years or less. When we look at the number of such movements which have happened in the 15 centuries since the founding of Islam, here’s what we find:1 Centuries

Do you see the trend? God is calling Muslims – in significant numbers, in multiple geographic areas – to himself at recordbreaking speed! What might be the reason? Certainly a big part of the answer is prayer – concerted, intentional, loving prayer for Muslims by the Church of Jesus. It’s not coincidental that the largest movements toward Christ have come as the Church has committed itself to praying for those trapped within Islam. As believers have started talking together about the unreached, prayer resources have become available. The first Operation World was published in 1978, the Global Prayer Digest was first issued in 1984, and in 1993, the organized international prayer focus during the Muslim month of fasting, Ramadan, was begun. You have a vital role in this on-going trend! Join others at Calvary in “30 Days of Prayer for the Muslim World,” June 28July 27, 2014. Pick up a prayer guide at the information desk. Children’s guides are also available for families to pray together. You can also join with others in prayer each Sunday during Ramadan. In room 130-132 at 11:00, we will be calling on God together to continue His rescue of people throughout the House of Islam.
Thank you for your support of and prayers on behalf of Calvary’s short-term missions trips this summer. Young and old(er), students and families, will experience – some for the first time – serving with each other, total dependence on God, and experiencing the power of prayer. Thank you for praying for safety, team unity and strength for each of these teams and the leaders as they prepare to go: MozaMbique: using the “Simply the Story” method of inductive Bible study, the team will work with children’s and youth workers in Chinhangane. May 25-June 5. ChiCago: Calvary’s high school students will learn how to present and defend their faith, and will be given real-world opportunities to engage unbelievers. June 23-29. honduras: The 2014 Honduras team will be supporting full-time Honduran missionaries Andy and Carmen Castillo by coordinating a Vacation Bible School, building six restrooms for the local public school, and spending time at the Casa Hogar orphanage. June 23-30. st. Louis: our 7th and 8th graders will travel to St. Louis MO where they will take part in “Engage” – painting houses, landscaping, cleaning up parks – learning how to be the hands and feet of Jesus through acts of service. July 20-25. grand rapids: a group of our 5th and 6th graders will spend two nights serving right here in our own city – hosting a BBQ, washing cars for Take Hold Church, and helping the needy. July 29-31. guyana: this is a large team working alongside our missionaries, Andy & Kathleen Girwarnauth helping with their VBS program. August 7-17. Vero beaCh, FL: this is an introductory, serviceoriented family trip with our youngest team members serving the community in Vero Beach. August 8-17.

ten weeks!
Our team of scientists* has discovered that spending time with children in Calvary Kids ACTUALLY REVERSES THE AGING PROCESS*. You see, the positive phermones that are produced when engaging in fun activities (like playing Duck, Duck, Goose and singing songs like My God Is So Big, or cuddling small babies) sucks the age right out of your cells, leaving a more youthful you. It’s easy! Choose two to eight Sundays in July or August to serve in the nursery, preschool or children’s areas. Sign up with a friend or family member for twice the fun! You can even bring your whole small group! Sign up at the children’s check-in areas or the Calvary Café in May, or visit calvarygr.org/summerofserving right now to choose Sundays that works for you. Our goal is to give all of our normal, weekly volunteers a time to rest this summer, so this is your opportunity to bless them and the children we serve at Calvary, while you drink from the fount of youth.

Red Hot Faith
Wednesdays, Jun. 18 - Aug. 13 | 7:00–9:00pm In this fast-paced world, how can women develop a belief in God that is intimate, passionate, and contagious? In this eight-part interactive study with teaching segments taped in Turkey, Cindy Bultema explores ways for Christian women to make their faith red hot. Bible study participants will delve into the book of Revelation’s words for the church of Laodicea, a church that was reprimanded for their tendency to have lukewarm faith. After viewing the DVDs in Calvary’s Chapel women will divide into small groups to discuss the material. Facilitated by Susan Sorensen
Priorities: Tyranny of the Urgent Tuesdays, Jul. 8-Aug. 12 | 9:30-11:30am
Have you ever wished for a thirty-hour day? Every week we leave a trail of unfinished tasks, unanswered letters, unvisited friends and unread books. We desperately need relief! These studies are designed to help you put your life back in order by discovering what is really important. Summer is a great time to look again at God’s priorities for you as you prayerfully prepare for the fall. Come join us on a warm summer day, in room 141-145, and be refreshed as we study God’s Word. Facilitated by Ruthie Krause
The cost of each study is $10 and you will need to pick up a book at Calvary’s Women’s Ministry Office or at the reception desk at Entrance J. Please do the first lesson before you arrive for the first session. Sorry, no childcare is available. If you have questions, contact Women’s Ministry (women@calvarygr.org) at 956-9377, ext. 5186.
This summer young adults of all ages will gather together weekly for lifegiving conversation around the dinner table, followed by honest engagement with the book of Philippians. Together we’ll discover the joy and peace that can only be found in following Jesus. Don’t miss the Bible Study Kick-Off on Thursday, June 5 at 6:00pm under the canopy at Entrance A (all other nights we will meet in Room 121). Join us for a BBQ and worship. You’ll hear details about the Young Adult Bible Study on the book of Philippians. Note: Young Adult Communities (College, Merge & Foundations) will not meet at their regular times, June-August. This Bible Study will be the only weekly Young Adult gathering. Register at MyCalvaryGR.org by June 2 June/July 2014 | calvarygr.org | 7
grace BEYOND more than we ask or imagine for our children Over the summer we are continuing a conversation about our facilities and how we could enhance them to more fully live out God’s vision for our body, focusing on who we are as God’s people, and who He has called us to be as a church. Even though Grace Beyond is a building project, it’s about how God has shown His grace to us and how He wants to show it through us. This month we’re focusing on the youngest members of the Calvary family. We’re reflecting on our Children’s Ministry and expressing gratitude for those who give sacrificially to extend grace to kids in the midst of challenging circumstances. Together as a church body in the days ahead, let’s contemplate how we are extending grace to others and how we can do that better. Ultimately we believe that enhancing our building will allow us to remove some of the barriers that keep people from experiencing the grace they need in their lives.
8 | June/July 2014 | calvarygr.org
The goal of Calvary Kids is to provide children with an opportunity to learn about God’s love and connect with Him. One way that we as a church family can show God’s love to our children is to designate a space where they can be cared for that is secure, is designed especially for their unique needs and allows room for the ministry to grow into the future. Currently Children’s Ministry at Calvary is spread around the building due to a lack of contained space. Parents also experience traffic issues checking their children in and out on Sunday mornings. In addition to these challenges, the amount of exit/entrance points in our Children’s space creates security issues. Leaders and staff also face limited storage which infringes on their programming options. Grace Beyond will centralize Children’s Ministry in a new addition built out to the northeast from our current Sanctuary. There will be two main entry points, creating a destination for parents and kids, not an area that will be walked through. In Matthew 19:14, Jesus calls the little children to Him when the disciples think they detract from His work. There is much we can learn from our children about faith and God’s kingdom. Now is the time to invest in their spiritual maturity, that they may grow in wisdom and become agents of grace in our world for His kingdom’s sake. WAYS YOU CAN PRAY FOR CALVARY KIDS THIS SUMMER: • Pray that kids finishing our Kids-N-Action program will find ways to “put their faith into action” during the summer. • Pray that the LUMIN8 Children’s Choir CD will minister to all who receive it this Summer, and bring fruit in the lives of those who listen to God’s word through the music. • Pray for children who come to CSI. Pray that they would understand in a fresh way, or even for the first time, that they are loved by their Creator, and that Jesus is the way to God.
Serving in Calvary Kids Lynda Freeman, 11:15am Team Leader for Kindergarten & First Grade Serving in the Children’s Ministry is such an honor, delight and joy as I am constantly reminded of God’s grace! I see God’s grace when children share their prayer requests and pray. I also see it on their faces when they learn God loves them, He will never leave and they can know Him for themselves! I also see it in the faithfulness of those who teach and help week after week; God’s grace is so clearly on display in Calvary Kids! While God’s grace is incredibly evident in our ministry, I’ve noticed that new families often look overwhelmed as they try to find their children’s classrooms and maneuver through the crowded halls. It can also be difficult at times for teachers to find ways to engage all children in their lessons rather than having them sit around tables in small rooms. In addition, security can be a challenge due to the doors in the children’s area which lead outside and our difficulty providing bathrooms which are just for children. Despite these structural issues, it is a blessing to see teachers build relationships with the children in their classes. I am thankful God has given us such a wonderful team of people who serve Him by teaching children how they can trust and follow Christ for the rest of their lives! It is exciting to consider how children could experience His love and grace in greater ways when we are able to address some of these existing challenges.

On The Bookshelf In Smart Money Smart Kids, financial expert and author Dave Ramsey and his daughter Rachel Cruze teach parents how to raise money-smart kids in a debt-filled world. Starting with the basics like working, spending, saving, and giving, and moving into more challenging issues like avoiding debt for life, paying cash for college and battling discontentment, Dave and Rachel present practical strategies for teens and toddlers alike.
It’s Hollywood, 1967! To those who matter in Hollywood, Lena Scott is the hottest rising star to hit the silver screen since Marilyn Monroe. Few know her real name is Abra. Even fewer know the price she’s paid to finally feel like she’s somebody. She’s burned every bridge to get exactly what she thought she wanted, and now all she wants is a way back home. In Bridge to Haven, author Francine Rivers delivers big-canvas story-telling at its very best in this riveting and highly anticipated saga of temptation, grace, and unconditional love. Muslims coming to faith in Christ through dreams or visions, more Muslims choosing Jesus in this lifetime than in all the previous 13 centuries of Islam put together: What does this really look like? Who are these new brothers and sisters in Christ, how have they been reached by the gospel, and what can we learn from them? David Garrison has tackled these questions in A Wind in the House of Islam. Through over 1000 interviews with believers of Muslim background, Garrison shows how God is at work in each of the “rooms” (geo-cultural regions) within the Islamic world, the “house of Islam.” He paints the big picture that 84% of the verifiable movements toward Christ are happening now - in the 21st century. Beyond that, he confronts our own faith and obedience through conversations with these believers, who are giving everything to follow Jesus. Truly a book to rejoice over and to be challenged by. Recommended by Celeste McDonough, Pastoral Staff, Missions & Outreach In Finding Calcutta, lifelong educator, Mary Poplin, experiences a newfound awakening to faith and chooses to visit and volunteer with Mother Teresa. This is a great story that demonstrates one person’s journey to live life as a follower of Christ. Recommended by Tom Olsson, Associate Pastor
The Library is located across from Fellowship Hall on the lower level. Our hours in the summer are Sunday, 9:15 - 11:15.

We are so glad you have joined us today. We know there are many churches you could have chosen to attend and we are glad you chose to be here. Perhaps this week you have experienced what a stormy place this world can be. At times our lives feel unpredictable and out of control. The Apostle Peter knew all about that. He knew what it was like to fail and to feel defeat and he knew what it was like to suffer. But he also knew what it was like to walk on water. This year at Calvary Church, we are studying Peter’s letters to the church. In them we see that Peter is telling us that hard times come and that life isn’t always easy, but that God is a refuge for each one of us. While you are here we hope you will experience the grace and peace that can come from Jesus Christ — the same Jesus who helped Peter defy nature on the Sea of Galilee. Jim Samra Senior Pastor

LIFE {TOGETHER} Community is a place where you belong; a place where you develop relationships with other Christians and do life together. When you experience true community, you have close friends who meet together, pray together, grow together in God’s Word, and care for one another. In community you will be loved; you will be valued; you will be transformed more into Christ’s image. If you realize it is time to engage with people in a new way and want to be a part of a community group, visit the Connection Point on Sunday mornings or contact Brenda Neher (community@ calvarygr.org).
