forever. Preparing for Easter

Calvary Church, 2013

Why do we observe a Season of Preparation? Holy Season is the period of the church calendar, beginning approximately forty days prior to Easter, which focuses our attention on spiritual things. Historically, it has been called “Lent. In Matthew 6, Jesus encourages the spiritual practices of prayer, giving, and fasting. Christians have incorporated these practices into seasons of preparation for Easter (or Lent) since the very first centuries after Christ. Over the years since then, the practices that are reflected in Lent have changed, or even been abused or neglected, but their purposes have always been self-examination and spiritual preparation leading up to Holy Week and Easter. This season of the calendar is about training our hearts for a deeper relationship with God, offering an opportunity for us to connect with Jesus in his own temptation and suffering (Matthew 4). Just as Jesus was in the wilderness to be tempted by Satan for forty days, so Lent is forty days long. At Calvary we feel it is important for us to practice the spiritual disciplines of prayer, giving and fasting in order to prepare our hearts for Easter. Participating in Lent is completely voluntary and in no way earns favor with God. While our church understands that Lent has become a legalistic practice in some corners of Christendom, and has been long neglected in others, our hope is that an organized approach will help you grow spiritually and make the season of preparation a meaningful process for you.

How do we propose to observe a Season of Preparation this year? This year, Lent begins on Wednesday, February 13 and ends at Easter. This equals forty-six days, because we exempt Sundays. We do not fast on Sundays because Jesus told us not to fast when we are in His presence (Mark 2) and we understand that He is with us in our worship services.

Prayer. The fruit of Lent is both a deeper relationship with God now and a more exuberant and mindful celebration of Easter in six weeks. During Lent, we take extra time to pray and 1) thank Jesus for what he endured for us; 2) pray that those who do not know Jesus will come to know him, especially at our Easter services when many who do not know Christ will be present. This is a good time to recommit to praying for three people in your life who need to know God’s love.

Giving. As we prepare for Easter, we think about Jesus’ sacrifice for us, which should stir our hearts toward gratitude. During these weeks, perhaps you might consider putting aside some money that could be used toward something the Lord lays on your heart for another person or for a specific ministry.

Fasting. One of the ways that this season has historically been observed is by setting aside certain foods or non-essential activities. The point of this fast isn’t

depravation and it certainly is not meant to “earn” God’s grace. Instead, like all fasting, it is meant to provide a period of spiritual focus on the dedication of one’s self to God. We encourage you to participate in this tradition of the early Christian church. You may choose to abstain from a certain type of food or a leisure activity or something that is neither inherently good nor inherently bad. Examples of things that people have given up for Lent include: meat, coffee, lunch once a week, television, video games, or some sleep (i.e. you could get up thirty minutes early every day for time with Jesus).

What is Palm Sunday? On Palm Sunday, we celebrate Christ’s Triumphal Entry into Jerusalem, the week before His death and resurrection. Palm Sunday marks the beginning of Holy Week. The Bible tells us that when Jesus entered Jerusalem, the crowds greeted Him by waving palm branches, and by covering His path with them. Immediately following this great time of celebration, Jesus began His journey to the cross. The Bible passages of Palm Sunday can be found in Matthew 21:1-11, Mark 11:1-11, Luke 19:28-44 and John 12:12-19.

What is Maundy Thursday? Traditionally the Christian Church has referred to the Thursday before Easter as Maundy Thursday, from the Latin word “mandatum.” The term is usually translated “commandment,” from John’s account of this night. According to the book of John, as Jesus and the disciples were eating their final meal together before His arrest, He washed the disciples’ feet to illustrate humility and servanthood. During the Passover (Lord’s Supper), Jesus took bread and wine and asked His Father to bless it. He broke the bread, giving it to His disciples saying, “This is my body, given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” Then He took the cup of wine and said, “This wine is the token of God’s new covenant to save you−an agreement sealed with the blood I will pour out for you.” During our Maundy Thursday service, we often see people washing the feet of others to demonstrate humility and servanthood. We also partake in the Lord’s Supper just like Jesus did on the night He was betrayed. The Bible narratives of Maundy Thursday can be found in Matthew 26:17-30, Mark 14:12-26, Luke 22:7-38, John 13:1-17,and I Corinthians 11:23-25.

What is Good Friday? Good Friday is the day Christ died on the cross, the Friday before Easter. As the most somber day in the Christian calendar, it is a day for prayer, repentance, and meditation on the agony and suffering of Christ on the cross. Since Christ’s death on the cross is central to the Christian faith, the events of that day should be ever on our minds. We celebrate Good Friday with a subdued evening service, remembering the night of Christ’s death. The Bible passages for Good Friday can be found in Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, and John 19.

What is Easter Sunday? From the earliest days of the church, Easter has been celebrated by all Christians everywhere. As the most important day in the Christian calendar, Easter Sunday is the day that we celebrate the bodily Resurrection of our Lord, Jesus Christ. Our observation of Lent and Holy Week will better prepare our hearts to celebrate the power and joy of Christ’s resurrection on Easter. The Bible passages for Easter can be found in Matthew 28, Mark 16, Luke 24, and John 20.

How to use this Devotional Guide To complement our Sunday morning series in the books of Samuel, our devotions during this season of preparation for Easter will focus on some of the names of God that David speaks of in the Psalms. Each week we will explore a different name for God and meditate on a related Psalm with a selection of short readings and prayers. (Feel free to supplement these with your own readings from the Psalms.) Each week also includes an action step to encourage us to step out in faith in a tangible way as we prepare our hearts for Easter.

Week 1

Adonai The Lord

Week 1

Adonai The Lord

“Adonai” is the Lord. It means master, owner or sovereign ruler and exemplifies to us God’s authority. This word stresses our relationship with God as our master and Lord.

Week 1

Sunday

Action Step

A day to receive from God. Rest.

Proclaiming God as Adonai or Lord of your life is easier said than done. As we start this Lenten season, take some time to pray about the areas of your life in which God may be trying to lead you, but you are not willing to let go. Make a list of the areas you want to give up to God (finances, relationships, hobbies) and commit to praying for God’s control over them throughout this season and beyond.

Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our debts as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For Thine is the kingdom, the power, and the glory, forever. Amen

“Lord, how are they increased that trouble me! Many are they that rise up against me. Many there be which say of my soul, there is no help for him in God. Selah. But thou, O Lord, art a shield for me; my glory, and the lifter up of mine head. I cried unto the Lord with my voice, and he heard me out of his holy hill. Selah.”

“I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me. I will not be afraid of many thousands of people who have set themselves against me all around. Arise, O Lord! Save me, O my God! For you strike all my enemies on the cheek; you break the teeth of the wicked. Salvation belongs to the Lord; your blessing be on your people.”

Pray to the Lord who brings salvation. Praise Him for His protection and shield. Thank Him for hearing and answering your prayers.

Pray to the Lord who brings life. Praise Him for giving you life and breath today. Praise Him for bringing salvation.

Week 3

Sunday

Action Step

A day to receive from God. Rest.

God is not a God who is afar; He is present. His immediacy is something that we often forget but that can be a great source of strength and comfort throughout our day. Plan on taking a break some time this week to sit for a half hour and meditate on His Word. Pray that He reveal to you how He has been present in your day so far, in your week, throughout this season of Lent. Jot down the things He reveals to you and keep them as loving reminders of how present He is in life even when we don’t realize it.

Amen

“To you, O Lord, I lift up my soul; in you I trust, O my God. Do not let me be put to shame, nor let my enemies triumph over me. No one whose hope is in you will ever be put to shame, but they will be put to shame who are treacherous without excuse. Show me your ways, O Lord, teach me your paths; guide me in your truth and teach me, for you are God my Savior, and my hope is in you all day long. Remember, O Lord, your great mercy and love, for they are from of old. Remember not the sins of my youth and my rebellious ways; according to your love remember me, for you are good, O Lord.”

“Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways. He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. All the ways of the Lord are loving and faithful for those who keep the demands of his covenant. For the sake of your name, O Lord, forgive my iniquity, though it is great. Who, then, is the man that fears the Lord? He will instruct him in the way chosen for him. He will spend his days in prosperity, and his descendants will inherit the land. The Lord confides in those who fear him; he makes his covenant known to them. My eyes are ever on the Lord, for only he will release my feet from the snare.”

Psalm 25:1-7

Pray to the Lord your God. Ask God to show you the paths He has for you. Praise Him for His steadfast love and mercy.

Look upon my affliction and my distress and take away all my sins. See how my enemies have increased and how fiercely they hate me! Guard my life and rescue me; let me not be put to shame, for I take refuge in you. May integrity and uprightness protect me, because my hope is in you. Redeem Israel, O God, from all their troubles! Pray to the Lord your God. Pray that God will be gracious to you. Confess to the Lord and ask God to forgive you. Beg the Lord to guard and protect you through His righteousness.

He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge; his faithfulness will be your shield and rampart. You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday.
